SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy took part in some light throwing on Monday after missing his first career game because of an injury and the 49ers are hoping he can return this week. Purdy hurt his throwing shoulder during a loss to Seattle on Nov. 17. Purdy underwent two MRIs last week that showed no structural damage. But Purdy he felt discomfort after making a few throws at practice on Thursday and was shut down for the game at Green Bay on Sunday that San Francisco lost 38-10 . Coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that Purdy made it through the session without pain and will rest on Tuesday and hopefully be able to return to practice on Wednesday as the Niners prepare to play at Buffalo this coming week. “We rested it throughout the weekend hoping that would help,” Shanahan said. “He threw lighter today to see if that rest helps and the rest did help him. So we’ll see again, going through the same things we did last week. We’re going to let him rest all the way up to Wednesday. We’ll see how it feels on Wednesday and then we’ll take the exact same course throughout the week. Hopefully it responds better this week than it did last week with the rest.” Brandon Allen went 17 for 29 for 199 yards with a touchdown, an interception and a lost fumble in his first start since the 2021 season. Allen would play once again if Purdy is unable to go on Sunday at Buffalo. Purdy wasn't the only star player missing for the 49ers on Sunday with defensive end Nick Bosa missing the game with injuries to his left hip and oblique and left tackle Trent Williams out with an ankle injury. “Just waiting to see how they respond,” Shanahan said. “They didn’t respond great last week. That’s why they weren’t able to go. Nick and Trent are both in the same boat. ... We’ll evaluate as this week progresses and hopefully it turns a better corner than it did last week.” In other injury news, linebacker Dre Greenlaw will return to practice this week for the first time since tearing his Achilles tendon in the Super Bowl last season. Greenlaw will likely need at least a couple of weeks of practice before being able to return to play. Offensive lineman Jon Feliciano will be shut down for the rest of the season after his knee injury didn't fully heal. Feliciano's three-week practice window ended Monday and the Niners decided to keep him on injured reserve instead of activating him. Left guard Aaron Banks, defensive tackle Jordan Elliott and receiver Jacob Cowing all remain in concussion protocol to start this week and their status is unknown. Right guard Dominick Puni (shoulder) and cornerback Deommodore Lenoir (knee) underwent MRIs on Monday and the team is waiting for results. Cornerback Renardo Green (neck) and linebacker Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles (knee) are day to day. Defensive tackle Kevin Givens is expected to return to practice this week after missing the past four games with a groin injury. BY MELISSA GOLDIN Social media users are misrepresenting a report released Thursday by the Justice Department inspector general’s office, falsely claiming that it’s proof the FBI orchestrated the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021. Claims spreading online focus on the report’s finding that 26 FBI informants were in Washington for election-related protests on Jan. 6, including three who had been tasked with traveling to the city to report on others who were potentially planning to attend the events. Although 17 of those informants either entered the Capitol or a restricted area around the building during the riot, none of the 26 total informants were authorized to do so by the bureau, according to the report. Nor were they authorized to otherwise break the law or encourage others to do so. Here’s a closer look at the facts. CLAIM: A December 2024 report released by the Department of Justice’s Office of the Inspector General is proof that the Jan. 6 Capitol riot was a setup by the FBI. THE FACTS: That’s false. The report found that no undercover FBI employees were at the riot on Jan. 6 and that none of the bureau’s informants were authorized to participate. Informants, also known as confidential human sources, work with the FBI to provide information, but are not on the bureau’s payroll. Undercover agents are employed by the FBI. According to the report, 26 informants were in Washington on Jan. 6 in connection with the day’s events. FBI field offices only informed the Washington Field Office or FBI headquarters of five informants that were to be in the field on Jan. 6. Of the total 26 informants, four entered the Capitol during the riot and an additional 13 entered a restricted area around the Capitol. But none were authorized to do so by the FBI, nor were they given permission to break other laws or encourage others to do the same. The remaining nine informants did not engage in any illegal activities. None of the 17 informants who entered the Capitol or surrounding restricted area have been prosecuted, the report says. A footnote states that after reviewing a draft of the report, the U.S. attorney’s office in Washington said that it “generally has not charged those individuals whose only crime on January 6, 2021 was to enter restricted grounds surrounding the Capitol, which has resulted in the Office declining to charge hundreds of individuals; and we have treated the CHSs consistent with this approach.” The assistant special agent in charge of the Washington Field Office’s counterterrorism division told the inspector general’s office that he “denied a request from an FBI office to have an undercover employee engage in investigative activity on January 6.” He, along with then-Washington Field Office Assistant Director in Charge Steven D’Antuono, said that FBI policy prohibits undercover employees at First Amendment-protected events without investigative authority. Many social media users drew false conclusions from the report’s findings. “JANUARY 6th WAS A SETUP!” reads one X post that had received more than 11,400 likes and shares as of Friday. “New inspector general report shows that 26 FBI/DOJ confidential sources were in the crowd on January 6th, and some of them went into the Capitol and restricted areas. Is it a coincidence that Wray put in his resignation notice yesterday? TREASON!” The mention of Wray’s resignation refers to FBI Director Christopher Wray’s announcement Wednesday that he plans to resign at the end of President Joe Biden’s term in January. Other users highlighted the fact that there were 26 FBI informants in Washington on Jan. 6, but omitted key information about the findings of the report. These claims echo a fringe conspiracy theory advanced by some Republicans in Congress that the FBI played a role in instigating the events of Jan. 6, 2021, when rioters determined to overturn Republican Donald Trump’s 2020 election loss to Democrat Joe Biden stormed the Capitol in a violent clash with police. The report knocks that theory down. Wray called such theories “ludicrous” at a congressional hearing last year. Asked for comment on the false claims spreading online, Stephanie Logan, a spokesperson for the inspector general’s office, pointed The Associated Press to a press release about the report. In addition to its findings about the the FBI’s involvement on Jan. 6, the report said that the FBI, in an action its now-deputy director described as a “basic step that was missed,” failed to canvass informants across all 56 of its field offices for any relevant intelligence ahead of time. That was a step, the report concluded, “that could have helped the FBI and its law enforcement partners with their preparations in advance of January 6.” However, it did credit the bureau for preparing for the possibility of violence and for trying to identify known “domestic terrorism subjects” who planned to come to Washington that day. The FBI said in a letter responding to the report that it accepts the inspection general’s recommendation “regarding potential process improvements for future events.”Syracuse, Albany each hoping to get right at expense of the other

Washington, D.C., is breaking down data silos with the development of its Education Through Employment Data System, designed to unify data across the workforce-to-education continuum. The initiative aims to provide actionable insights into how education and workforce programs impact the economic mobility of the city’s residents. Led by the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Education (DME) in partnership with data analytics firm Resultant, the project will be the first of its kind in the district. It will integrate data from preschool through post-secondary education and employment. Monica Dodge, executive director of the (ETEP), said earlier investments in technology and workforce education helped lay the groundwork for the new project. Most recently, Mayor Muriel Bowser set aside $23 million in the 2025 budget to improve career and technical high school education. “The district recognized that there was an opportunity to really delve deeper in understanding outcomes and the impact of that work,” Dodge said. For the technical work of creating the data system, like aggregating data, consolidating student records and creating dashboards and visualizations, the DME’s office to Resultant. Curt Merlau, senior director of Resultant’s education department, said that in addition to common challenges with siloed data, the longitudinal data system will require interstate data sharing for students who attend college or work outside of D.C. to get important information on wages and post-secondary credentials. “That data helps us understand what is working for whom and where,” he said. When working with large volumes of student data, Dodge said it’s important to ground the work in community priorities, which requires outreach. “We’ve engaged with hundreds of district stakeholders, including families, students, school leaders and community partners, to understand their priorities,” she said. These engagements revealed a strong public demand for transparency and a focus on equity. As such, the ETEP data system team has identified specific populations to prioritize in its analysis, including students with disabilities, English learners and students from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups. This focus helped shape the three-year and insights they hope to gain from the data, Dodge said. She added that once data makes the effectiveness of education and workforce programs in the district more transparent, parents can make informed decisions on what opportunities best meet their needs, employers can make decisions about how they develop local talent pipelines, and community partners can identify opportunities to serve youth communities. The ETEP initiative reflects a growing policy trend in states and localities across the U.S. to attempt to link education data to workforce outcomes, with the goal of better preparing students for the job market. Longitudinal data systems in and informed D.C.’s approach, Dodge said. “We have certainly learned from those systems,” she said. “I think at the same time, D.C. has been quite unique in terms of both the scope of data that we are bringing together across the education, workforce, social services and juvenile justice partners, as well as the extent to which we are really focused on delivering value and transparency for the public.” National organizations like the Data Quality Campaign have highlighted public demand for accessible, actionable data on education and employment. A recent found 97 percent of early childhood administrators said data significantly improved their decision-making processes. The same poll found that existing systems, like government agencies to which schools are required to report data, do not necessarily provide useful feedback. Additionally, the poll found that training on how to use data is a key component, a point Merlau shared as well. “Data moves at the speed of trust,” he said. Dodge said D.C. has long prioritized being data driven in policy and program investment and has seen promising signs that their stakeholders trust data. Earlier this year, the DME’s office published a with data on access to career and technical education programs that has been cited by community members and leaders in public testimony before the D.C. Council, Dodge said. As the city embarks on its research agenda through fiscal year 2027, Dodge and Merlau both said that longitudinal data systems like this one will likely become more popular. “As you look nationally, you’re going to see more and more states want and demand linking this workforce data to education data to ensure we are preparing our students for jobs that will allow them to thrive,” Merlau said.Times News Network Ludhiana: Almost everywhere you go in the city, witty slogans of MC election candidates are likely to catch your eye. Some of these are, “Sada ward sada parivar” (our ward our family), “sada maa ward” (our mother ward), “kam kita kam karange” (we have worked we will work) etc. The slogans are not very complicated and easily lodge in people’s minds, which is what the candidates want. AAP candidates use the slogan, “AAP di sarkar AAP da councillor.” They drop the hint that electing a councillor from the ruling party would lead to dividends in terms of development. Former councillors are using slogans like “sewa kiti hai, sewa karange,” “aapka bharosa hamari takat” etc. Independent candidate from ward number 34, Ravinder Singh Rawat gave a particularly creative slogan. It goes, “Sabhi dalon mein dal dal, sabse badhiya bedal.” His stance is that people are unhappy with political parties and independents should be given a chance. Ruling party MLA Gurpreet Gogi fielded his wife from ward number 61, from where he used to contest elections. Besides the slogan, “AAP da MLA, AAP da MC,” he has used, the “sada maa ward” slogan. Star Trek 's Harry Kim was done dirty by Voyager many times throughout the series. He was killed, given an alien disease, and, worst of all, remained at the rank of Ensign for the entirety of the series. So, when CinemaBlend spoke to actor Garrett Wang about his feelings during that at the time, he was candid about how displeased he was, how his perspective changed over time, and how he made a wild plea to Kate Mulgrew. I had a chance to talk to Wang ahead of his return in the Star Trek: Lower Decks episode "Fissure Quest" (which you can stream now with a Paramount+ subscription ), and we also chatted about the past WTF moments of Voyager as well as Harry never being promoted. Even though it was a character on the show, I asked the actor if he ever felt "miffed" about Harry never moving to that next level. To my mild surprise, he was so worked up about it that he ended up outside Kate Mulgrew's trailer at one point. Here's what he said: I was miffed for a very long time. I was miffed for a very, very long time. I remember knocking on Kate Mulgrew's trailer door, pleading to the actress playing the captain to promote me. I said, ‘This is ridiculous. I haven't been promoted yet. I've done all these things for the crew. I've helped save the day a few times.’ And Kate was like, ‘I know, I know.’ So she was sympathetic, but silly me, I was so desperate. I went to the actress playing the role of captain to try to get promoted. And so yeah, I was miffed in the beginning. Mulgrew was at the top of the call sheet, but even then, she was also working at the will of the writers and the showrunner. Unlike upcoming Trek shows , the largely episodic structure of The Next Generation era meant maintaining the status quo. However, even then, the series found a way to demote and reinstate Tom Paris, so I can understand why Garrett Wang was so frustrated. Given that, one might think Star Trek: Lower Decks ' "Fissure Quest" so directly poking fun at the multiverse of Harrys being shocked over one's promotion might sting a little. However, Wang assured me that's not the case these days, and he learned to embrace that part of his character that made him stand out among some of the best Star Trek characters out there: I learned to accept it. And that's the lesson there for all human beings that we're all in a situation at one point or another. Whether it's work or school where we're stuck in a rut where we're not advancing and we're feeling like everything is against us. And that's truly Harry. Harry is the punching bag of Voyager. Harry is the Rodney Dangerfield of Voyager. 'No respect,' for those of you out there who understand that reference. As time went on, I accepted it and realized that, 'Hey, this happens to Harry, and it happens to people in real life. And what do you do? You could sit there and complain about it and get gray hairs over it or get over it.' Because that's the thing: stress and trauma cause illness in the body, right? Or, you can go with the flow, and I've actually owned it to the point where my tag whenever I play any online games and my gamer name is Forever Ensign. So, I have already adopted it. I've embraced it. It's of little surprise to me that Lower Decks creator Mike McMahan helped create a script that Garrett Wang was comfortable with and was the first to feature the character again in the new era. That said, the actor did confirm to CinemaBlend that it wasn't his first invite back to Star Trek , but that's all we know about that. Star Trek: Lower Decks' Jerry O'Connell Shared A Cryptic Response When Asked About Not Being In The Strange New Worlds Crossover, And Now I'm Curious Harry Kim was the villain of sorts in Star Trek: Lower Decks ' "Fissure Quest," but he was also the hero. A promoted Harry attempted to transport all the other Harrys to his universe where they could be their best selves, only to be thwarted by his other selves because none of them wanted that. Sure, the acknowledgment of hard work would've been nice, but in a post-scarcity society how much should people value a promotion? They're all getting a meal of their choosing from the replicator the same as anyone else, so maybe rank and prestige aren't so valuable until it gets to a certain point. Maybe the finale of Star Trek: Lower Decks will go deeper on that idea too, because if I've learned anything, it's to expect the well-thought-out unexpected with this show. CINEMABLEND NEWSLETTER Your Daily Blend of Entertainment News Catch the finale of Lower Decks when it airs on the 2024 TV schedule Thursday, December 19th on Paramount+. I'm thrilled to see the conclusion of the series, though I have to say it would be more thrilling to see the series get picked up by another streamer and make a big return.

TALLAHASSEE — Matt Gaetz’ knack for courting controversy has finally caught up with him. The right-wing firebrand, political prankster, steadfast Trump defender and party animal stepped down as the president-elect’s choice for Attorney General once it was made clear to him he didn’t have the needed support in the U.S. Senate. Senators on both sides of the aisle had reacted to the former Florida congressman’s nomination with shock, with one calling him “a not serious candidate” and others demanding more details about the sex scandals swirling around him for the past few years. After being asked Thursday to comment on a report that a 17-year-old girl had sex with him twice at a former lawmaker’s house party in Seminole County in 2017, Gaetz bowed out so he would not “unfairly become a distraction” for President-elect Donald Trump. Even without the allegations of sexual misconduct, Gaetz was an unusual choice for attorney general, experts said. He had the least amount of legal experience of any nominee since the end of World War II. “His background doesn’t look anything like other attorney generals going back to Eisenhower. It makes no sense,” said Carl Tobias, a law professor at the University of Richmond and expert on federal courts and the judicial selection process. Most presidents have picked attorney generals with vast professional and legal experience because they run an agency of 40 separate divisions, including the Office of Solicitor General, FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration, U.S. Marshals Service, Bureau of Prisons, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, Tobias said. “I don’t think he even appreciates how the DOJ works,” Tobias said. Gaetz’s reputation for trolling enemies on social media and insulting fellow members of Congress on conservative talk shows left him with few allies in Washington, D.C. In one of his most high-profile actions, Gaetz wore a gas mask on the House floor while Congress voted on a multibillion dollar bill to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. “The big picture for Gaetz is that all his questionable behavior, actions and statements have caught up with him finally,” said Aubrey Jewett, a political science professor at the University of Central Florida. “For a long time it seemed like they would not because he had the president-elect’s ear.” And now, his political future depends on Trump’s continued support. Trump didn’t waste any time replacing Gaetz with fellow Floridian Pam Bondi, a former state attorney general who is a more likable yet equally dedicated Trump loyalist without the same amount of baggage as Gaetz. But Trump took to his own Truth Social platform to praise Gaetz, saying he had “much respect” for his decision to step down. “Matt has a wonderful future, and I look forward to watching all of the great things he will do!” Trump said. U.S. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, a fellow Republican from Florida and Trump supporter, posted on X that Gaetz was the victim of a media smear, and feared facing the same kind of brutal grilling as Justice Brett Kavanaugh endured six years ago. Gaetz ended speculation Friday that he would return to his Florida District 1 Congressional seat when the new session begins in January by saying that eight years was enough and it was time to move on to new things. “Usually at some point the president or nominee realizes it is not going to happen,” Jewett said. “Instead of forcing the issue and airing dirty laundry out in public they withdraw. That appears to be what happened.” Typically, presidents nominate attorney generals who have extensive experience, often as judges or prosecutors, as they will be overseeing the world’s largest law office, with more than 115,000 employees. Gaetz graduated from the College of William and Mary law school in 2007 and started working at the Fort Walton Beach law firm of Larry Keefe, who was Trump’s appointee as U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Florida during his first term and is Florida’s public safety czar for Gov. Ron DeSantis. As a junior lawyer, Gaetz handled mostly run-of-the-mill cases. The Okaloosa County court records show him handling about two cases a year in his home county. His first two cases were traffic infractions, and he also worked on debt and contract disputes, negligence and workers compensation claims. One case involved a homeowners association in its dispute against Walton County over the location of a beach volleyball net, records show. After less than a year as a lawyer, Gaetz was pulled over for speeding in his father’s BMW and arrested for drunk driving. He refused to take a breathalyzer test and the charges against him were dropped. He’s been casual about maintaining his practice, Florida Bar records show. He had his license suspended for failing to pay his fees in 2021 but it was reinstated when he paid up. He also was cited for not keeping up with his continuing legal education requirements in 2023. And he was cited two years in a row for not being up to date on his trust account reports. In 2010, Gaetz ran as a Tea Party Republican and was elected to the Florida House of Representatives. His financial disclosure form said he earned $29,000 from his legal practice that year. He spent his time defending Florida’s controversial “stand-your-ground” law and railing against the Affordable Care Act and Medicare. But he was instrumental in getting Florida’s medical marijuana law passed. He quickly got a reputation for lashing out against his political enemies in Florida and that expanded when he went to D.C. He was investigated by the Florida Bar for an incendiary tweet accusing Michael Cohen, a former Trump attorney and head of the Trump Organization, of infidelity. The House Ethics Committee admonished Gaetz for his comments. He also received a letter from the Florida Bar advising him that a comment he made about House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat, was inappropriate. He took down the post and apologized. When Gaetz criticized former Florida Rep. Chris Latvala, a fellow Republican, for meeting with the Rev. Al Sharpton in 2020, Latvala accused Gaetz of starting a sex game where lawmakers earned points for sleeping with aides, interns, lobbyists and married lawmakers. The game had been reported by the Miami Herald in 2017 but it wasn’t until 2020 that Latvala connected the game to Gaetz – who denied the accusation. As a freshman congressman in 2017, he raised eyebrows when he cast the lone vote against an anti-human trafficking bill. And his decision to wear the gas mask on the floor earned him condemnation from many quarters. Even more bizarre, in 2020 an unmarried Gaetz at the time shocked fellow members of Congress with the revelation that he had an “adopted” son, a Cuban immigrant whose mother had died of cancer and was the brother of Gaetz’ girlfriend at the time. “His temperament or personality just doesn’t fit the role. He’s never been a serious guy,” Jewett said. “His thing is firing up the base, getting media attention and likes on social media. That is not typically what you want in an Attorney General. That doubled with the ethical and legal clouds are a terrible fit.”Half of councils failed to prosecute ANY slum landlords in FIVE years"Big" Bronson Reed has been one of the most exciting wrestlers in WWE this past year, participating in multiple excellent matches and creating memorable moments. That being said, no moment stood out more than when Reed leapt off the steel cage during the Men's WarGames match at Survivor Series. Reed's Tsunami through the table that narrowly missed Roman Reigns was truly a sight to behold. Unfortunately, it seems like it came at a cost. During the spot, Reed landed poorly and injured his foot, requiring surgery earlier this week. Despite the outcome, Reed stands by the moment and is optimistic about his recovery . "I believe that in this business, you have to keep evolving," Reed said on X. "This is just another time to do so. Your outlook on situations can make or break you. My spirit is unbreakable." I believe that in this business, you have to keep evolving. This is just another time to do so. Your outlook on situations can make or break you. My spirit is unbreakable. Now, it looks like the powerful Australian will be out of the squared circle for many months, potentially missing WrestleMania 41. According to a report from Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez of Wrestling Observer Radio , Reed will be missing from in-ring action for "many months." "I want to wish the best to Bronson Reed, who underwent foot surgery, I guess, yesterday, and he revealed on social media [that] he was set for surgery, and he had broken his foot, obviously coming off the cage," Alvarez said. "Looking like it's gonna be many months of recovery. And, I mean, the only thing I heard was, like, it was one of those things where, like, it was more complicated than they thought when they went in there. But apparently, they got it all done, and he's on the road to recovery, so all the best to him." More Professional Wrestling: WWE Hall of Famer Cancels Appearance on Saturday Night's Main Event Meltzer echoed this sentiment, noting that Reed is "not expected to be back for WrestleMania." "Bronson Reed is having foot surgery," Meltzer said. "He's going to be out for months, yeah, a long time. I was told, after you [Alvarez] had messaged me that, I asked somebody there and they said that he's not expected to be back for WrestleMania. It's expected to be a long time." Needless to say, this is a huge loss for WWE. Reed has firmly established himself as one of the most exciting Superstars on the roster today. Whether he's facing off against Seth "Freakin" Rollins, the Original Bloodline, Chad Gable, or Braun Strowman, Reed has always been able to maintain the crowd's attention and come across as a dangerous monster. CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- SMU coach Rhett Lashlee said Friday the Mustangs ' No. 8 ranking in the latest College Football Playoff selection committee rankings is the reason they should make the 12-team field, no matter what happens in the ACC championship game. The Mustangs face No. 17 Clemson (9-3) on Saturday night with an automatic playoff berth on the line. SMU (11-1), in its first year in the ACC, was the only team to complete league play 8-0. "The reason I know we should be in is because the committee has ranked us in. They've said we're good enough," Lashlee said during an ACC championship game news conference. "The regular season is complete. All 134 teams have played their regular season. It is over. "The case is closed on that, and they said you're the eighth-best team in the country. They said you're better than two other teams that are currently in the field for an at-large. You're better than them. Those teams didn't earn the right to play in a conference championship game, and we did. So I don't get how you could punish anybody for that." Editor's Picks How SMU's first season in the ACC became a massive success 8h Dave Wilson How the conference championship games will shake out and impact the playoff field 29m Bill Connelly Inside Iowa State's chase for its first conference title in 112 years 6h Max Olson Selection committee chair Warde Manuel left wiggle room Tuesday when asked directly whether SMU could fall behind No. 11 Alabama (9-3) with a loss and he responded, "potentially yes." "They can move above teams, as well. Again, it just depends on the outcome of the game," Manuel said. Manuel also said the teams that are not playing Saturday are essentially locked in and cannot move up or down. He said the teams playing in their championship games will be moved. "If the team ranked No. 9 can't jump the team ranked No. 7 because neither of them played, then there's no way the team ranked ninth or 11th can jump the team ranked eighth or fifth or whatever because they are playing this week," Lashlee said. There has been much debate about the role of conference championship games in the expanded playoff era, as coaches have wondered throughout the season whether playing in an extra game could end up punishing teams that lose. Lashlee said skipping the ACC championship game never entered his mind. "We did the right thing. We showed up. We value the opportunity to play in a conference championship game," Lashlee said. "We value the opportunity to go compete with Dabo (Swinney) and Clemson for an ACC championship. That is a big deal. To have a chance to win our league, it's a bigger deal than just playing for seeding, though that's a part of it, too. But that's the right thing to do. To me, that's integrity. We're going to show up and do the right thing and not find a way to bounce out because we were told on Tuesday night that if you don't play, you're in at 8. "But we also know the committee has a tough job, so we believe and trust they're going to do the right thing and reward our guys who've earned the right not only to play here tomorrow night but to be one of the 12 best teams in America because they ranked them that."Labour MP for Cardiff West, Alex Barros-Curtis, said warnings should have been “amber or red”, as Mr Reed told MPs that more flooding is “likely”. Hundreds of homes were left under water, roads were turned into rivers and winds of more than 80mph were recorded across parts of the UK. More than 130 flood warnings and 160 alerts remained in place across the UK on Monday. In the Commons on Monday, Mr Barros-Curtis asked: “Can I ask that the Secretary of State speak to his Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) colleagues to carefully look into the role of the Met Office here? “It is clear that their response was slow and that there was a clear underestimation of the impact of Storm Bert. “They put it yellow rather than amber or red. Our constituents have been let down by this incompetence before, and it cannot keep happening.” Mr Reed said: “In most parts of the countries that were affected, warnings were given with adequate time for people to prepare and I would encourage people to sign up on the Defra website, or the Environment Agency website for warnings and alerts if they live in an area that could be affected by flooding. “I’m aware of the particular concern that he mentions regarding the Met Office, and I will indeed be speaking to colleagues in DSIT as they review the circumstances of that and look at how the situation can be improved for future events of this kind.” During his update to the House, the Environment Secretary said that more flooding this week is “likely” but its impact “should be less severe” than has been seen. He said: “Around 28,000 properties are being protected by Environment Agency flood defences. “Unfortunately, an estimated 107 properties have flooded across England, principally from river and surface water flooding.” He added: “The Environment Agency and local responders have also been busy protecting properties elsewhere in England, including flooding from the River Teme in Tenbury Wells where around 40 properties have flooded. “The river has now peaked and local responders will be focusing on the lower reaches of rivers over the next few days.” He further stated: “Further flooding is sadly likely over the next few days as water levels rise in slower flowing rivers such as the Severn and the Ouse. “The Environment Agency anticipates that any impacts should be less severe than we have seen in recent days.” Mr Reed also described the flood defences they inherited from the previous government as being “in the worst condition on record following years of underinvestment”. He added: “Over 3,000 of our key flood defences are below an acceptable standard. “That is why we are investing £2.4 billion over the next two years to build and maintain flood defences.” Elsewhere in the session, Labour MP for Coventry South, Zarah Sultana, was among the MPs to call for a legal duty on fire services to respond to flooding. She said: “I want to express my solidarity and thanks to all of our emergency services, including firefighters on the front line. “Extreme weather events are on the rise and becoming ever more frequent due to climate change, highlighting the urgent need for proper funding and resources. “England is the only part of the UK without a statutory duty for flooding, leaving fire services underfunded and under-resourced to respond effectively. This must change, as the FBU (Fire Brigades Union) has long called for.” “When will the Government finally provide a statutory duty for Fire and Rescue authorities to respond to flooding incidents in England?” Mr Reed replied: “The fire and rescue authorities have the powers to intervene, but she’s quite right to point out there’s not a duty, and officials in my department, working with the Home Office, will review that to see that that remains appropriate.” Conservative MP for Mid Buckinghamshire Greg Smith said some communities in his constituency are flooding “for the first time in decades” as he accused the Government of wanting to “concrete over the countryside”. He said: “That is a result of some of the big infrastructure we are seeing being built, particularly HS2 where they will concrete over a field completely, it seems, unaware that that will have a knock-on effect to farmland next door. “So will the Secretary of State commit to working with the Transport Secretary (Louise Haigh) and I also suggest the Deputy Prime Minister (Angela Rayner) given their plans to concrete over the countryside to ensure that where construction takes place proper, and I really mean proper, flood mitigation measures are put into place.” Mr Reed replied: “This needs to operate across Government, and we will have those conversations and ensure that measures are put in place to support communities as much as is possible from the more severe weather events that we’re seeing as a result of climate change.”BY MELISSA GOLDIN Social media users are misrepresenting a report released Thursday by the Justice Department inspector general’s office, falsely claiming that it’s proof the FBI orchestrated the Capitol riot on Jan. The FBI said in a letter responding to the report that it accepts the inspection general’s recommendation “regarding potential process improvements for future events.”

TEHRAN –The administration has focused on increasing women's share of entrepreneurship in the science and technology sector from currently 12 percent to 30 percent, Zahra Behrouz-Azar, the Vice President for Women and Family Affairs, has said. “Since graduated women constitute a large percentage of unemployed individuals, we are trying to implement the idea of increasing the share of women in entrepreneurship in cooperation with the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology, technology parks and business incubators, as well as the Ministry of Information, and Communication Technology, to minimize the gap and witness the presence of more and more women in businesses,” IRNA quoted Behrouz-Azar as saying. The official made the remarks on Saturday, December 21, on the sidelines of an exhibition called ‘Women, the pivot of innovation and technology’. According to Behrouz-Azar, women account for more than 24 percent of inventions in the country, compared to the global average of 17 percent. In Iran, entrepreneurship officially commenced in 2000. Following that it was defined as a field of study in universities, and the first entrepreneurial major as an interdisciplinary one launched at University of Tehran, she explained. The official went on to say that the concept of entrepreneurship is interwoven with various fields such as economy, psychology, culture, sociology, and even religion. With the conceptual development of entrepreneurial thought, women’s entrepreneurship begins to grow because there is a difference between men and women in terms of performance, motivation, and access to resources. One of the most important differences between entrepreneurship among women and men is the issue of motivation. Men’s motivation in entrepreneurship is more concerned with earning a living and increasing wealth, but women all over the world tend to use it to strengthen the family foundation. The most important goal in women’s entrepreneurship in the current administration is to promote motivation. Men entrepreneurs can more easily provide resources and capital for their businesses, but this happens less for women. Therefore, educated women face funding problems to start their businesses. The government is well aware of the issue and is looking for solutions to boost access to finance for women entrepreneurs, Behrouz-Azar highlighted. Addressing the Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference, held in Bangkok, Thailand, from November 19 to 21, Behrouz-Azar stated that the current administration focuses on empowering women in social and economic areas, as well as improving their access to social services and facilities through implementing certain national programs. “Iran has always focused on programs that empower women, particularly those who are heads of household, economically and socially. Actions taken by the country have always aimed to promote women’s status by observing the principles of the constitution and Islamic teachings,” Mehr news agency quoted Behrouz-Azar as saying. Referring to Iran’s remarkable achievements in education, health, science, technology, and entrepreneurship, she underscored the prominent role of Iranian women in these fields. The official further said the seventh National Development Plan has stressed the need to overcome barriers to women’s professional development. Accordingly, the current administration has put supporting women’s entrepreneurship and home business growth on the agenda despite unfair sanctions. Addressing a roundtable focusing on ‘Advancing women’s economic empowerment through employment, decent work, social protection, and entrepreneurship’, Fakhr al-Sadat Fatemi, an advisor to the deputy vice president for women and family affairs, for her part proposed three ways to advance women’s empowerment in different fields, these ways include training, empowering, acquiring skills, and developing opportunities for women’s participation, as well as providing legal and executive support, Mehr news agency reported. International Universal Health Coverage Day, observed annually on 12 December, aims to raise awareness about the importance of strong and resilient health systems and universal health coverage (UHC). Advocates use this day to amplify the voices of millions still waiting for access to essential health services, urging leaders to make smarter, more substantial investments in health. It also encourages diverse stakeholders to commit to advancing UHC, with the ultimate goal of achieving it globally by 2030. Universal health coverage (UHC) aims to ensure that all people globally have access to quality, affordable healthcare. In fact, the United Nations designated 12 December as International Universal Health Coverage Day (UHC Day). Since then, this day has been observed to promote access to healthcare services in countries worldwide. The COVID-19 pandemic has again shown us that UHC and health security are intertwined goals to protect everyone, everywhere, that we achieve through the same health system – in crisis and calm. For health systems to work, they must work for everyone – no matter who they are, where they live, or how much money they have. Equitable health coverage puts women, children, adolescents, and the most vulnerable first because they face the most significant barriers to essential care. The goal of universal health coverage (UHC) has become more attainable as the world has become richer, leading to greater access to health services and technologies, such as vaccines and antibiotics, and to the most dramatic decline in poverty ever achieved. To ensure that every person benefits from the human right to health, political leaders have to make the right choices, the rational economic, financial and social choices of universal health coverage. Governments around the world are responsible for managing healthcare services for their populations by creating opportunities and incentives to attract private healthcare organizations, ensuring proper healthcare facilities. Universal health coverage processes can only be achieved when government-run health organizations collaborate with private healthcare businesses. Hospitals at various levels and rural health centres must be equipped with essential medicines and medical equipment to ensure they are always ready to provide healthcare services. Moreover, human resources for health, including physicians, nurses, medical doctors, and medical technologists, must be deployed. Reducing gaps in health coverage will undoubtedly promote a healthier lifestyle for the community. Consequently, the community will surely turn out healthy and fit people in coming generations.NoneSINGAPORE , Nov. 30, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Amber DWM Holding Limited ("Amber DWM"), the holding entity of Amber Group's digital wealth management business, known as Amber Premium ("Amber Premium"), today announced that it has entered into a definitive Agreement and Plan of Merger (the "Merger Agreement") with iClick Interactive Asia Group Limited ("iClick" or the "Listco") (NASDAQ: ICLK) and Overlord Merger Sub Ltd. Australia's House of Representatives passes bill banning children younger than age 16 from social mediaORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Gratifying as it was for Sean McDermott to catch up with his family and get some rest during Buffalo’s bye week, the Bills coach on Wednesday found comfort returning to his weekly routine and familiar wardrobe — a gray T-shirt and sweatpants. “When I’m not wearing those, I go to my closet and I don’t know what to wear. I’m kind of like not myself,” he said before pulling up his hoodie for emphasis to reveal the gray shirt he had on underneath. “So I was telling some of the guys this morning, ‘It’s good to be back.’” Though there remain challenges ahead, these are upbeat times in Buffalo . The Bills (9-2) are off to their best start since 1992. They remain in contention for the AFC’s top seed by entering their break following a 30-21 win over Kansas City (10-1). And Buffalo is in position to clinch its fifth straight AFC East title as early as Sunday. To do so, the Bills would need Miami to lose to Green Bay on Thursday night, and Buffalo to win its game over San Francisco (5-6) on Sunday night. Buffalo has won six straight since back-to-back losses at Baltimore and Houston, and scored 30 or more points in each of its past five outings. Refreshed as McDermott sounded and appeared, it didn’t take long for him to revert to his game-at-a-time script when assessing what’s on the line this weekend. “We’re mostly focused on our level of play this week against a good football team,” he said. McDermott shed little light on the status of Buffalo’s lengthy list of injured players. There’s no timetable yet on Matt Milano being activated off injured reserve, even though the starting linebacker practiced fully for the first time since tearing his left biceps during a training camp practice in mid-August. Milano has actually missed nearly 14 months since sustaining a season-ending injury to his right leg in Week 5 last season. Milano revealed little during a brief interview following practice. “I feel all right. Getting back into it with the team,” said Milano, who no longer wore a red non-contact jersey in practice. Meantime, rookie receiver Keon Coleman, who has missed two games with a right wrist injury, and starting right tackle Spencer Brown, who missed one game with an ankle injury, were limited in practice. Tight end Dalton Kincaid (knee) was Buffalo's only player not practicing. The Bills also opened the three-week window for backup rookie defensive tackle DeWayne Carter (wrist) and backup offensive lineman Tylan Grable (groin) to return. McDermott has another positive going for him revolving around the bye week. The Bills are 8-0 coming out of their break since McDermott took over as coach in 2017. “I don’t really have the, hey, this is exactly what we do formula,” McDermott said on whether he’s changed his bye week approach. “It’s more of us really just getting back to what we do, getting back to basics.” AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nflBy MICHAEL R. SISAK NEW YORK (AP) — Lawyers for Sean “Diddy” Combs tried for a third time Friday to persuade a judge to let him leave jail while he awaits his sex trafficking trial, but a decision won’t come until next week. Judge Arun Subramanian said at a hearing that he will release his decision on Combs’ latest request for bail after Combs’ lawyers and federal prosecutors file letters addressing outstanding issues. Those letters are due at noon on Monday, Subramanian said. Combs’ lawyers pitched having him await trial under around-the-clock surveillance either his mansion on an island near Miami Beach or — after the judge scoffed at that location — an apartment on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Their plan essentially amounts to putting Combs on house arrest, with strict limits on who he has contact with. But prosecutors argue that Combs has routinely flouted jail rules and can’t be trusted not to interfere with witnesses or the judicial process. “The argument that he’s a lawless person who doesn’t follow instructions isn’t factually accurate,” Combs lawyer Anthony Ricco argued. “The idea that he’s an out-of-control individual who has to be detained isn’t factually accurate.” Combs, 55, has pleaded not guilty to charges that he coerced and abused women for years with help from a network of associates and employees while silencing victims through blackmail and violence, including kidnapping, arson and physical beatings. His trial is slated to begin May 5. The Bad Boy Records founder remains locked up at a Brooklyn federal jail, where he spent his Nov. 4 birthday. Two other judges previously concluded that Combs would be a danger to the community if he is released and an appeals court judge last month denied Combs’ immediate release while a three-judge panel of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals weighs his bail request. Friday’s hearing was the second time Combs was in court this week. On Tuesday, a judge blocked prosecutors from using as evidence papers that were seized from his cell during jail-wide sweep for contraband and weapons at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. As he entered through a side door, Combs waved to relatives including his mother and several of his children in the courtroom gallery, tapping his hand to his heart and blowing kisses at them. He then hugged his lead attorney, Marc Agnifilo, before taking a seat at the defense table. He was not handcuffed or shackled and wore a beige jail uniform, occasionally pulling a pair of reading glasses from his pocket as he peered at papers in front of him. Prosecutors maintain that no bail conditions will mitigate the “risk of obstruction and dangerousness to others” of releasing Combs from jail. Prosecutors contend that while locked up the “I’ll Be Missing You” artist has orchestrated social media campaigns aimed at tainting the jury pool. They allege that he has also attempted to publicly leak materials he thinks would be helpful to his case and is contacting potential witnesses via third parties. “Simply put, the defendant cannot be trusted,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Christy Slavik argued. Combs’ lawyer Teny Geragos countered that, given the strict release conditions proposed, “it would be impossible for him not to follow rules.”

NOTE: Late games between Daniel Boone and Providence Academy and Chuckey-Doak versus David Crockett were still in progress at press time. Recaps of those games can be seen online at johnsoncitypress.com and timesnews.net or in the next editions of the Johnson City Press and Kingsport Times News. Clinton was able to keep the pressure on University High on Tuesday afternoon. Pressing throughout four quarters, the Dragons defeated the Bucs 64-40 in the opening boys’ game of the 35th annual Hardee’s Classic basketball tournament at David Crockett High School. It was the strategy which University High coach Herman Rice and staff figured the Dragons (2-1) would employ. But, it proved too much for the Bucs (1-2) to overcome. Clinton led 19-12 after one quarter and 34-22 at halftime. “Their intensity was the way a basketball team should play and we didn’t meet the challenge,” Herman Rice said. “The disappointing thing is our senior group has played in the state tournament and they’ve seen presses. Nothing against Clinton, but we’ve seen presses like that and had no trouble with them. I was shocked we didn’t handle it well.” Bryson Maddux led the bigger and stronger Clinton team with 19 points. Carson Richardson reached double figures with 10 points. Ben Tackett netted nine points and Braylon Hayden was next with eight points. Brady Weems was the leading scorer for University High with 13 points and Andrew Cole finished with 10 points. Knox Poston ended with eight points. Rice played his reserves extensively and was pleased what he saw out of them. Cash Paysinger had just four points, but impacted the game with his tough play and battling inside for rebounds. “We were really impressed with the second group,” Rice said. “That’s the kind of effort we have to have from everybody. Cash took five charges. He will sacrifice his body and will do anything you ask him for the team.” South Greene 62, Cocke County 53 The defending tournament champion Rebels began their defense of their title with the victory over the Fighting Cocks. South Greene led 35-24 at the half before Cocke County cut the lead to four to start the third quarter. The Rebels pushed the lead to 48-38 at the end of three quarters and led by double digits for most of the second half. Chandler Gamble led South Greene with 21 points. Jase Roderick posted 15 for the Rebels and Gavin Dyer tallied a dozen. Kyler Hayes paced Cocke County with 11 points. Maddox Holt, Ethan Fine and Spencer Moore Jr. each scored 10.Local charities are encouraging generous donors to make contributions on Dec. 3, known nationally as “Giving Tuesday.” “It’s an annual event for us. For at least 10 years we’ve been promoting Giving Tuesday, which is a great way to give back to the community at the end of the year,” said Ellen Luton, president of United Way of Aiken County. “We would encourage everyone to give because it’s a great cause to give locally to our Aiken community, especially after Hurricane Helene,” Luton said. “We’ve seen a lot more need following that event. If anybody is able to give we would welcome their contribution,” she said. Links for donating are on the organization’s website and Facebook page. United Way of Aiken County helps support 30 local nonprofit agencies. The organization’s annual fundraising campaign runs from late August through October. “We had a lot of support during our annual fundraising campaign. Area businesses participate in that through workplace giving and corporate donations, and individuals participate as well,” Luton said. Giving Tuesday is like a bonus at the end of the annual campaign, she said. “After Cyber Monday and Small Business Saturday and Black Friday, it’s nice to donate whatever coins you have leftover to a good cause,” Luton said. USC Aiken is tracking Giving Tuesday donations to its annual fund on a speedometer that increases by one MPH with each contribution. MPH in this case stands for “Many Pacers Helping,” said Carlos Baxley, Leadership Giving Officer for USCA’s Office of Advancement. Last year’s effort raised $33,000 from 105 donors, Baxley said. The first $5,000 in donations this year will be matched by an anonymous donor. “We need support not only from our Pacer family at USCA but from the larger Aiken community as well,” Baxley said. Contributions can be made through USCA’s website . St. Mary Help of Christians School is raising money on Giving Tuesday to stock its STEM center. “In today's world, technological advancements are happening at a rapid pace. To keep up with the ever-changing landscape, St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic School will use your generous donation this day of giving to ensure that our new STEM Center is well-equipped with the necessary resources to prepare students for the technology-driven careers that await them in the future,” according to a release by the school. The first $25,000 in donations will be matched by an anonymous donor. Contributions may be made through the school’s website . “With your support, our students will have access to state-of-the-art tools and emerging technologies. This will enable them to develop essential skills in a world where the ability to think critically and creatively will develop the Christian leaders of tomorrow,” the school said. Other local groups seeking support on Giving Tuesday include: The Aiken Standard Community Christmas Card Friends of the Animal Shelter The Cumbee Center Golden Harvest Food Bank SPCA Albrecht Center Friends of the Aiken County Library Friends of the Nancy Carson Library The Salvation Army

Nobody is more aware of what Nikola Jokic means to the Nuggets than head coach Michael Malone. Denver is one of the most dominant teams in the NBA when the Serbian superstar is on the court. However, they aren’t nearly as effective when he’s on the bench. So when the head coach was asked about the team’s plan without their center, Malone joked that he banks on divine intervention. In their narrow win over the Warriors, the Nuggets held a net rating of +23 with the three-time MVP on the court. However, whenever he took a break, Golden State began to claw their way back into the game. This has been a recurring occurrence and one that Denver needs to address immediately. When Malone was questioned about the team’s strategy without Jokic, he quipped, However, he did proceed to give a serious answer and said the rest of the team needs to step up when Jokic is taking a breather, Jamal Murray finished with only 12 points against the Warriors but had a net rating of +4. Russell Westbrook’s net rating was a disappointing -10, but his clutch defensive play in the closing moments secured the victory for Denver. However, Denver needs more from Jokic’s supporting cast. Malone doesn’t want Jokic to play heavy minutes on a nightly basis. However, he will do what’s necessary to get a win. That certainly turned out to be the case against the Warriors as the Serbian superstar played 40 minutes. The head coach claimed it was the need of the hour and he was their best bet to get the win, The reigning MVP finished with 38 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists, and helped his team secure the win. The Nuggets don’t even resemble a play-in team without Jokic, but his impeccable play makes them a legit contender. Jokic’s dominance this season The Serbian superstar is filling up the stat sheet but the advanced analytics capture the true impact of the MVP candidate. On the season, Jokic is averaging the highest point differential of his career at +31. This mark is within the 100th percentile, making it his fourth consecutive season among the NBA’s best in that department. According to Cleaning the Glass, the Nuggets’ expected points are +61 with Jokic on the court. Additionally, the team’s effective field goal percentage increased by 11.3% with the center running the show. There isn’t a player in the NBA who is as valuable as Jokic. However, the Nuggets are risking burning him out, and Malone knows the rest of the team, including him, needs to step up and help their talisman.Subscribe to our newsletter Privacy Policy Success! Several California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) faculty and staff members hand-delivered a letter signed by 64 employees to the office of President Ravi Rajan on Tuesday, December 3, stating their intent to unionize with the backing of 75% of staff. Employees of the Santa Clarita private art school first publicly announced their plan to unionize under the name CalArts United-United Auto Workers (UAW) on Instagram on November 19. “Too many of us struggle with low pay, unstable benefits, and a lack of job security,” Rodrigo Arruda, an assistant director in admissions at CalArts, told Hyperallergic in a statement. “Our salaries are stagnant, our workloads are increasing, and we have no meaningful recourse in cases of harassment and discrimination.” Over 900 undergraduate students were enrolled in 2022 across the institution’s visual and performing arts bachelor of fine arts programs. CalArts also grants master of fine arts degrees in disciplines including art, graphic design, and film directing. More than 450 of the 602 full-time and part-time faculty and staff at the institute are in support of forming the union, according to Patrick Schmid, an assistant director of admissions at CalArts and alum. Schmid told Hyperallergic that since becoming an employee in 2019 he has observed “a significant decline in conditions for staff, faculty, and students.” Get the latest art news, reviews and opinions from Hyperallergic. Daily Weekly Opportunities Schmid added that staff have been taking on the jobs of employees who have been laid off during restructuring, meaning that “many of us now juggle two jobs or more with no relief.” “The workload continues to grow with no meaningful changes in sight,” Schmid said. “I’m deeply concerned about both my spouse and me as we face serious health and financial challenges, further complicated by stagnant pay and inaccessible health benefits.” Since CalArts United-UAW first announced their intent to unionize, the group has called upon employees across the institute’s art, dance, film theater, music, and critical studies schools to sign authorization cards, which signal their support for union representation. The group said they would hold off on filing for an election with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) until a supermajority of staff were in support, which they have now secured. To hold an NLRB election and certify the union, CalArts United-UAW would only need 30% of workers to sign authorization cards, but the group is asking for the art school to voluntarily recognize the union instead, which could be a smoother process. If President Rajan does not respond by the end of the semester, workers said they are prepared to file with the NLRB. Members of the group are requesting a meeting with him before December 10. A spokesperson for CalArts told Hyperallergic that the institution “trusts that the best way to ensure a fair process in which each employee may freely express their choice is through a secret ballot election conducted by the NLRB.” The spokesperson said CalArts is committed to maintaining a “supportive, creative, and collaborative teaching and learning environment for our students and all members of our community.” “The Institute views representation by a union as a matter of employee choice, and supports its employees’ right to determine for themselves whether or not they think unionization would be beneficial,” the spokesperson said. Autumn Wyatt, an access services librarian at CalArts, told Hyperallergic that the new union is in line with other organizing efforts at private educational institutions like the University of Southern California (USC), New York Film Academy (NYFA), and Columbia University, whose unions have negotiated increases in salaries and wages. This summer, NYFA formed a union after 98% of faculty and staff signed on. Last fall, the Graduate Student Workers Organizing Committee-UAW at USC ratified its first contract that saw gains in stipends and new discrimination protections. Similarly, Columbia Graduate Workers-UAW improved wages and benefits after a 10-week strike that halted classes for several weeks in 2022. “It feels as though the administration is more focused on maintaining appearances rather than making tangible improvements that truly support the dignity of the community,” Schmid said. “As an alum, it’s heartbreaking to see that so many of us care more about CalArts than it seems to care about us.” We hope you enjoyed this article! WEST PALM BEACH, Florida, - President-elect Donald Trump on Saturday sided with key supporter and billionaire tech CEO Elon Musk in a public dispute over the use of the H-1B visa , saying he fully backs the program for foreign tech workers opposed by some of his supporters. Trump's remarks followed a series of social media posts from Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, who vowed late Friday to go to "war" to defend the visa program for foreign tech workers. Trump, who moved to limit the visas' use during his first presidency, told The New York Post on Saturday he was likewise in favor of the visa program. "I have many H-1B visas on my properties. I've been a believer in H-1B. I have used it many times. It's a great program," he was quoted as saying. Context: Elon Musk vows 'war' over H-1B visa program amid rift with some Trump supporters Musk, a naturalized U.S. citizen born in South Africa, has held an H-1B visa, and his electric-car company Tesla obtained 724 of the visas this year. H-1B visas are typically for three-year periods, though holders can extend them or apply for green cards. The altercation was set off earlier this week by far-right activists who criticized Trump's selection of Sriram Krishnan, an Indian American venture capitalist, to be an adviser on artificial intelligence, saying he would have influence on the Trump administration's immigration policies. Musk's tweet was directed at Trump's supporters and immigration hard-liners who have increasingly pushed for the H-1B visa program to be scrapped amid a heated debate over immigration and the place of skilled immigrants and foreign workers brought into the country on work visas. On Friday, Steve Bannon, a longtime Trump confidante, critiqued "big tech oligarchs" for supporting the H-1B program and cast immigration as a threat to Western civilization. In response, Musk and many other tech billionaires drew a line between what they view as legal immigration and illegal immigration. Trump has promised to deport all immigrants who are in the U.S. illegally, deploy tariffs to help create more jobs for American citizens and severely restrict immigration. The visa issue highlights how tech leaders like Musk ‒ who has taken an important role in the presidential transition, advising on key personnel and policy areas ‒ are now drawing scrutiny from his base. The U.S. tech industry relies on the government's H-1B visa program to hire foreign skilled workers to help run its companies, a labor force that critics say undercuts wages for American citizens. Musk has spent more than a quarter of a billion dollars helping Trump get elected in November. He has posted regularly this week about the lack of homegrown talent to fill all the needed positions within American tech companies. Named after actress and singer Jane Birkin , the bag is handcrafted and produced in limited numbers, due to its high price tag. Depending on its model and condition, a genuine Birkin bag can sell anywhere from $18,000 to $225,000 on resale platforms such as Wrist Aficionado, cementing its status as a coveted fashion accessory for the wealthy elite. However, a new twist has emerged in the world of luxury fashion, as a convincing dupe of the Birkin bag has gone viral. Available on W almart .com for under $100, the lookalike leather bag has garnered significant attention, particularly among fashion enthusiasts who admire the style of the Birkin but cannot or choose not to afford the authentic version. Despite the sharp contrast in price, the dupe is said to resemble the luxurious original, providing a much more budget-friendly option for those desiring the high-end aesthetic. The viral success of this affordable alternative has ignited an ongoing debate online, as shoppers flock to Walmart to secure their own version of the bag. Unfortunately, due to high demand, the lookalike bags are currently sold out, but eager buyers can check back on the retailer’s website in hopes of new stock being added. The incident highlights the growing trend of "dupe" culture in the fashion industry, where consumers are increasingly seeking affordable alternatives to high-end, designer items. As fashion enthusiasts continue to debate the merits of designer dupes versus original pieces, it is clear that the market for affordable alternatives to high-end luxury items is rapidly expanding. Whether the viral Birkin bag dupe will remain a fleeting trend or become a permanent fixture in the world of fashion remains to be seen.

GameStop Discloses Third Quarter 2024 ResultsManhattan police have obtained a warrant for the arrest of 26-year-old Luigi Nicholas Mangione , suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson . Mangione was arrested at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, while carrying a gun, mask and writings linking him to the ambush. Mangione is being held without bail in Pennsylvania on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm, forgery and providing false identification to police. Late Monday, Manhattan prosecutors charged him with five counts, including murder, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a forged instrument. Here's the latest: That’s according to a spokesperson for the governor who said Gov. Hochul will do it as soon as possible. Luigi Nicholas Mangione, the suspect in the fatal shooting of a healthcare executive in New York City, apparently was living a charmed life: the grandson of a wealthy real estate developer, valedictorian of his elite Baltimore prep school and with degrees from one of the nation’s top private universities. Friends at an exclusive co-living space at the edge of touristy Waikiki in Hawaii where the 26-year-old Mangione once lived widely considered him a “great guy,” and pictures on his social media accounts show a fit, smiling, handsome young man on beaches and at parties. Now, investigators in New York and Pennsylvania are working to piece together why Mangione may have diverged from this path to make the violent and radical decision to gun down UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in a brazen attack on a Manhattan street. The killing sparked widespread discussions about corporate greed, unfairness in the medical insurance industry and even inspired folk-hero sentiment toward his killer. ▶ Read more about Luigi Mangione Peter Weeks, the Blair County district attorney, says he’ll work with New York officials to try to return suspect Luigi Mangione there to face charges. Weeks said the New York charges are “more serious” than in Blair County. “We believe their charges take precedent,” Weeks said, promising to do what’s needed to accommodate New York’s prosecution first. Weeks spoke to reporters after a brief hearing at which a defense lawyer said Mangione will fight extradition. The defense asked for a hearing on the issue. In the meantime, Mangione will be detained at a state prison in western Pennsylvania. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office said Tuesday it will seek a Governor’s warrant to secure Mangione’s extradition to Manhattan. Under state law, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul can issue a warrant of arrest demanding Mangione’s return to the state. Such a warrant must recite the facts necessary to the validity of its issuance and be sealed with the state seal. It would then be presented to law enforcement in Pennsylvania to expedite Mangione’s return to New York. But Blair County District Attorney Peter Weeks says it won’t be a substantial barrier to returning Mangione to New York. He noted that defendants contest extradition “all the time,” including in simple retail theft cases. Dickey, his defense lawyer, questioned whether the second-degree murder charge filed in New York might be eligible for bail under Pennsylvania law, but prosecutors raised concerns about both public safety and Mangione being a potential flight risk, and the judge denied it. Mangione will continue to be housed at a state prison in Huntingdon. He has 14 days to challenge the detention. Prosecutors, meanwhile, have a month to seek a governor’s warrant out of New York. Mangione, wearing an orange jumpsuit, mostly stared straight ahead at the hearing, occasionally consulting papers, rocking in his chair, or looking back at the gallery. At one point, he began to speak to respond to the court discussion, but was quieted by his lawyer. Luigi Mangione, 26, has also been denied bail at a brief court hearing in western Pennsylvania. He has 14 days to challenge the bail decision. That’s with some intervention from owner Elon Musk. The account, which hasn’t posted since June, was briefly suspended by X. But after a user inquired about it in a post Monday, Musk responded “This happened without my knowledge. Looking into it.” The account was later reinstated. Other social media companies such as Meta have removed his accounts. According to X rules, the platform removes “any accounts maintained by individual perpetrators of terrorist, violent extremist, or mass violent attacks, as well as any accounts glorifying the perpetrator(s), or dedicated to sharing manifestos and/or third party links where related content is hosted.” Mangione is not accused of perpetrating a terrorist or mass attack — he has been charged with murder — and his account doesn’t appear to share any writings about the case. He shouted something that was partly unintelligible, but referred to an “insult to the intelligence of the American people.” He’s there for an arraignment on local charges stemming from his arrest Monday. He was dressed in an orange jumpsuit as officers led him from a vehicle into the courthouse. Local defense lawyer Thomas Dickey is expected to represent the 26-year-old at a Tuesday afternoon hearing at the Blair County Courthouse. Dickey declined comment before the hearing. Mangione could have the Pennsylvania charges read aloud to him and may be asked to enter a plea. They include possession of an unlicensed firearm, forgery and providing false identification to police. In New York, he was charged late Monday with murder in the death of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO Brian Thompson. Mangione likely was motivated by his anger with what he called “parasitic” health insurance companies and a disdain with corporate greed, said a a law enforcement bulletin obtained by The Associated Press. He wrote that the U.S. has the most expensive healthcare system in the world and that the profits of major corporations continue to rise while “our life expectancy” does not, according to the bulletin, based on a review of the suspect’s hand-written notes and social media postings. He appeared to view the targeted killing of the UnitedHealthcare CEO as a symbolic takedown, asserting in his note that he is the “first to face it with such brutal honesty,” the bulletin said. Mangione called “Unabomber” Ted Kaczynski a “political revolutionary” and may have found inspiration from the man who carried out a series of bombings while railing against modern society and technology, the document said. A felony warrant filed in New York cites Altoona Officer Christy Wasser as saying she found the writings along with a semi-automatic pistol and an apparent silencer. The filing echoes earlier statements from NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny who said Mangione had a three-page, handwritten document that shows “some ill will toward corporate America.” Mangione is now charged in Pennsylvania with being a fugitive of justice. A customer at the McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, where Mangione was arrested said one of his friends had commented beforehand that the man looked like the suspect wanted for the shooting in New York City. “It started out almost a little bit like a joke, my one friend thought he looked like the shooter,” said the customer, who declined to give his full name, on Tuesday. “It wasn’t really a joke, but we laughed about it,” he added. The warrant on murder and other charges is a step that could help expedite his extradition from Pennsylvania. In court papers made public Tuesday, a New York City police detective reiterated key findings in the investigation he said tied Mangione to the killing, including surveillance footage and a fake ID he used to check into a Manhattan hostel on Nov. 24. Police officers in Altoona, Pennsylvania, found that ID when they arrested Mangione on Monday. Mangione doesn’t yet have a lawyer who can speak on his behalf, court officials said. Images of Mangione released Tuesday by Pennsylvania State Police showed him pulling down his mask in the corner of the McDonald’s while holding what appeared to be hash browns and wearing a winter jacket and ski cap. In another photo from a holding cell, he stood unsmiling with rumpled hair. Mangione’s cousin, Maryland lawmaker Nino Mangione, announced Tuesday morning that he’s postponing a fundraiser planned later this week at the Hayfields Country Club north of Baltimore, which was purchased by the Mangione family in 1986. “Because of the nature of this terrible situation involving my Cousin I do not believe it is appropriate to hold my fundraising event scheduled for this Thursday at Hayfields,” Nino Mangione said in a social media post. “I want to thank you for your thoughts, prayers, and support. My family and I are heartbroken and ask that you remember the family of Mr. Thompson in your prayers. Thank you.” Officers used New York City’s muscular surveillance system . Investigators analyzed DNA samples, fingerprints and internet addresses. Police went door to door looking for witnesses. When an arrest came five days later , those sprawling investigative efforts shared credit with an alert civilian’s instincts. A customer at a McDonald’s restaurant in Pennsylvania noticed another patron who resembled the man in the oblique security-camera photos New York police had publicized. He remains jailed in Pennsylvania, where he was initially charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm, forgery and providing false identification to police. By late Monday evening, prosecutors in Manhattan had added a charge of murder, according to an online court docket. It’s unclear whether Luigi Nicholas Mangione has an attorney who can comment on the allegations. Asked at Monday’s arraignment whether he needed a public defender, Mangione asked whether he could “answer that at a future date.”

The German government pledged Sunday to fully investigate whether there were security lapses before the Christmas market car-ramming attack that killed five people and injured over 200. Political pressure has built on the question of potential missed warnings about Saudi suspect Taleb al-Abdulmohsen, a 50-year-old psychiatrist who had made online deaths threats and previously had trouble with the law. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser and the heads of Germany's domestic and foreign intelligence services are due to answer questions at parliamentary committee hearings on December 30, a senior lawmaker told AFP. Faeser vowed Sunday that "no stone will be left unturned" in shedding light on what information had been available to security services ahead of last Friday's bloody attack in the eastern city of Magdeburg. She stressed that the attacker did "not fit any previous pattern" because "he acted like an Islamist terrorist although ideologically he was clearly an enemy of Islam". Abdulmohsen has in the past called himself a "Saudi atheist" who helped women flee Gulf countries and charged Germany was doing too little to help them. In online posts, he also strongly criticised Germany for allowing in too many Muslim refugees and backed far-right conspiracy theories about the "Islamisation" of Europe. In one post, he wrote: "Is there a path to justice in Germany without blowing up a German embassy or randomly slaughtering German citizens?... If anyone knows it, please let me know." News magazine Der Spiegel, citing security sources, said the Saudi secret service had warned Germany's spy agency BND a year ago about a tweet in which Abdulmohsen threatened Germany would pay a "price" for how it treated Saudi refugees. Die Welt daily reported, also citing security sources, that German state and federal police had carried out a "risk assessment" on Abdulmohsen last year but concluded that he posed "no specific danger". - 'Blood and screams' - The city of Magdeburg has been in deep mourning over the mass carnage on Friday evening, when an SUV smashed through a crowd at its Christmas market, killing four women and a nine-year-old child and injuring 205 people. Surgeons at overwhelmed hospitals have worked around the clock, and one health worker told local media of "blood on the floor everywhere, people screaming, lots of painkillers being administered". Scholz on Saturday condemned the "terrible, insane" attack and made a call for national unity, at a time Germany is headed for early elections on February 23. But as German media dug into Abdulmohsen's past, and investigators gave away little, criticism rained down from opposition parties. Conservative CDU lawmaker Alexander Throm charged that "many citizens feel... that the Scholz government has completely failed in terms of internal security". He demanded greater police powers to monitor and analyse data from social media platforms, telecommunications and surveillance cameras with facial recognition technology. The far-right AfD called for a special session of parliament, and the head of the far-left BSW party, Sahra Wagenknecht, demanded that Faeser explain "why so many tips and warnings were ignored beforehand". Mass-circulation daily Bild asked: "Why did our police and intelligence services do nothing, even though they had the Saudi on their radar?... And why were the tips from Saudi Arabia apparently ignored?" It charged that "German authorities usually only find out about attack plans in time when foreign services warn them" and called for sweeping reforms after the election for a complete "turnaround in internal security". Senior MP Dirk Wiese of Scholz's Social Democrats said the December 30 hearings will summon the heads of the BND, the domestic intelligence service BfV and the Office for Migration and Refugees. - 'Ultra-right conspiracy ideologies' - Media meanwhile reported more details on Abdulmohsen, who had worked at a clinic that treats offenders with substance addiction problems, but had been on sick leave since late October. Der Spiegel reported that in 2013 a court fined him for "disturbing the public peace by threatening to commit crimes" after he had darkly referenced the deadly attack on the Boston marathon. The chairwoman of the group Central Council of Ex-Muslims, Mina Ahadi, said Abdulmohsen "is no stranger to us, because he has been terrorising us for years". She labelled him "a psychopath who adheres to ultra-right conspiracy ideologies" and said he "doesn't just hate Muslims, but everyone who doesn't share his hatred." bur/fz/gv

The legislators made this request amid the controversy over the trip two congresspeople from the progressive wing of the Democratic Party made to Cuba at the end of February. Republicans María Elvira Salazar, Nicole Malliotakis, Carlos Giménez, and Mario Díaz-Balart, all of Cuban origin, gave a press conference in front of Congress to make public their request to Biden and to attack the socialist system that, in their opinion, “has destroyed Cuba.” These legislators are trying to promote the so-called Force Acts, which would prevent the United States from normalizing relations with Cuba until “freedom and democracy are restored” on the island. In addition, it would prohibit the State Department from removing Cuba from the list of state sponsors of terrorism if those conditions are not met. 09. A U.S. federal court dismissed a lawsuit to stop the humanitarian parole program that allows migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela to request emergency entry into the country. With their arrival, 340 people have been returned in 26 operations from various countries in the region so far this year, official media reported cited by EFE. April 02 . The Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MINREX) considered the new press reports on the so-called “Havana Syndrome” released in recent days to be a “political propaganda operation.” These reports came to light as a result of a joint investigation by the U.S. network CBS, the Russian exile media outlet The Insider, and the German magazine Der Spiegel , according to which the mysterious health incidents reported by some 200 United States officials in Cuba and other countries would be the result of deliberate attacks and Russia would be behind them. “This is not an investigation, it is another political propaganda operation that does not provide any evidence and hides from the public the conclusions of important scientific studies that show that the ‘Havana Syndrome’ does not exist,” said Johana Tablada, deputy director for the United States of the Cuban Foreign Ministry, on X. U.S.: Coercion of patients closes investigation into “Havana Syndrome” in health institutes 03. The U.S. government believes that Cuba is at “a key moment” after the recent protests in several localities of the island, which motivated responses from the Cuban Foreign Ministry. The U.S. statements were made by Under Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Brian A. Nichols, who also estimated that “there are reasons for hope” because “the people are protesting in the streets with courage.” For the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MINREX) this consideration by the United States is an admission “with total shamelessness” of Washington’s intentions to bet on a “regime change.” 12 . The Cuban government accused U.S. intelligence agencies of “mounting an operation” to “provoke a social explosion” taking advantage of the “complex economic situation” that the island is going through. “They hope to heat up the Cuban streets during the summer, taking advantage of the complex economic situation that the country is experiencing,” according to the Granma newspaper. 17 . Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernández de Cossío said that the delegations from Cuba and the United States held a “frank discussion” on migration issues during the bilateral dialogue held in Washington. “It was a frank discussion. We cannot say that we agreed exactly on everything we discussed, but we had the opportunity to make proposals on each side based on how they believe the agreements are being fulfilled,” the diplomat commented after the talks. 23 . A report updated to April 15 reveals that 1,314,330 Cubans live in the United States , which makes the island the seventh country with the most residents in that nation. The document on Washington’s Nationalization Policy, from the Congressional Research Service, also states that 64% already have nationality. The Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MINREX) expressed its “deep concern” over the recent acquittal of the attacker of the island’s Embassy in Washington in 2020, and considered that this decision sends “a dangerous message of impunity.” The aggressor, named Alexander Alazo Baró, was acquitted of the four charges by a judge of the Court for the District of Columbia. In his decision, issued on May 1, the magistrate “alleged conditions of insanity of the perpetrator,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement. The MINREX recalled that Alazo Baró, who has lived in the United States since 2010, “fired 32 bullets from a magazine of an AK-47 semi-automatic rifle against the Cuban diplomatic headquarters in Washington, causing extensive material damage to the exterior and interior of the building and endangering the lives of several people who were inside the building.” 13 . Businesspeople, politicians and farmers began the 5th United States-Cuba Agricultural Conference in Havana. In the opinion of Congressman Rick Crawford, holding these types of meetings on a regular basis constitutes “progress,” although “we are still not where we would like to be,” according to Prensa Latina (PL) news agency. 13. The United States removed Cuba from its list of countries that “do not fully cooperate with anti-terrorist efforts,” according to a new report from the State Department. The new document states that “the circumstances that led to certifying that Havana was not fully cooperating with these efforts had changed from 2022 to 2023 and that therefore it could no longer certify that the island was not fully cooperating with the anti-terrorism issue under the Arms Export Control Act in calendar year 2023.” U.S. law establishes specific legal criteria for rescinding a designation of a nation as a sponsor of terrorism and therefore “any review of Cuba’s status on that blacklist would be based on the law and criteria established by the United States Congress.” For three consecutive years until the report referring to 2022, Washington has kept Cuba on the list. 16 . Businesspeople, producers, and authorities from the agricultural sector of the United States highlighted the “advances” and the “potential” of trade between both countries in this area. After three days of activities as part of the 5th United States-Cuba Agricultural Conference, held in Havana, the visitors confirmed their desire to continue these meetings and working to increase the bilateral relationship at a time when the country is suffering from a severe economic crisis that has agriculture as one of the most depressed sectors. “We have made great progress to strengthen ties and we will work step by step to achieve our objectives,” said Commissioner of the Louisiana Department of Agriculture Mike Strain at the close of the event. 16 . Responding to a journalist about the reasons why Cuba was removed from the aforementioned list, the deputy spokesperson for the State Department, Vedant Patel, acknowledged the validity and breadth of the embargo. “Cuba remains subject to an incredibly comprehensive embargo,” Patel admitted, as can be read in the transcript of the press briefing of the State Department. 17 . The U.S. government confirmed that it maintains Cuba on the list of state sponsors of terrorism. The decision was ratified after the island’s removal from the list of “countries that do not fully cooperate with anti-terrorist efforts” was announced, and Washington admitted that it cooperates with Havana in some activities to combat terrorism. 20 . Democratic members of Congress reacted positively to the step taken by the Biden administration, which admitted Cuba’s cooperation in the fight against terrorism. The authorization was provided by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration. A spokesman for the State Department, under which the TSA operates, said the visit is similar to others made in past years by Cuban officials, in the interest of cooperation on civil aviation security. 22 . Secretary of State Antony Blinken defended before the House of Representatives having removed Cuba from the list of countries that “do not fully cooperate” against terrorism because circumstances have changed. The US removes Cuba from the list of “countries that do not fully cooperate with anti-terrorism efforts”. The United States keeps Cuba on another list, that of countries that sponsor terrorism, a measure that entails economic sanctions. 23 . A group of 31 rafters was returned to Cuba by the U.S. Coast Guard. The migrants had been intercepted days ago at sea after making two illegal exits from the island, one through Havana and another through Matanzas, according to official sources. 28 . The United States announced that it allows Cuban entrepreneurs to open and use U.S. bank accounts over the Internet to carry out financial transactions from the island. The Treasury Department explained in a press release that this announcement, along with other measures, seeks to “promote internet freedom in Cuba, support independent Cuban private sector entrepreneurs, and expand access to certain financial services for the Cuban people.” U.S. authorizes Cuban entrepreneurs to open U.S. bank accounts through Internet The Treasury said that since May 28, Cuban entrepreneurs are authorized to “open, maintain, and remotely use U.S. bank accounts, including through online payment platforms, to conduct authorized transactions” whether from the United States, Cuba, or any other country. The United States also updated its definition of Cuban entrepreneur to include not only self-employed workers but also cooperatives and small private enterprises with up to 100 employees, which will be able to access the U.S. banking system. The U.S. also lifted the blockade on fund transfers originating and ending outside the United States, a measure that seeks to facilitate the sending of remittances to Cuba. “The measures announced today by the U.S. government are limited,” wrote Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez on X. 29 . The Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum of the University of Arkansas and the National Council of Cultural Heritage signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Havana. The campaign is called “Migra legally to the United States” and will address the procedures and other topics of interest for those who wish to do so. According to the diplomatic headquarters on its social media, the three characters — played by actors Luis Silva , Mario Sardiñas and Marlon Pijuan — will discuss these aspects with “someone with very good knowledge.” 08 . The United States ruled out that the arrival in the port of Havana of three Russian ships and a nuclear submarine, between June 12 and 17, constituted a direct threat to its security, considering that they are part of regular Russian military maneuvers. “Russia’s deployments are part of a routine naval activity and do not worry us, since they do not represent a direct threat to the United States,” official sources stated. The Department of Defense has previewed for Russia to carry out “intense naval activity near the United States” in the summer, which could culminate in a global exercise in the fall. 12. U.S. military authorities denied that an air strike by the United States against the jihadist group Al-Shabaab killed two Cuban doctors kidnapped five years ago in Somalia on February 15. The Al-Shabaab terrorists and the two Cuban doctors: a chronology The news of their death had been given by the terrorist organization Al-Shabaab, as a result of a bombing in an area of the African country where the doctors were supposedly being held. However, a report from the U.S. Military Command in Africa (AFRICOM) sent to the EFE news agency on Wednesday, although it confirms the attack, denies the death of the doctors. 13 . Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez considered that the report from the U.S. Military Command in Africa (AFRICOM) on the alleged death in Somalia of the two Cuban doctors kidnapped by the group Al-Shabaab “does not provide anything new.” The Foreign Minister said he was “surprised” by the military entity’s report , which denied that Cuban doctors Assel Herrera and Landy Rodríguez were among the victims of a U.S. air attack against the jihadist organization in February. “Since April we have been waiting, without response, for the investigations that Cuba officially requested regarding the AFRICOM attacks in another town in Somalia,” said the island’s Foreign Minister on X. 12 . “There is a new revolution that has taken root in Cuba. That is the revolution of young entrepreneurs who are taking charge of their situation, who are transforming their country, who are improving, growing, expanding, learning, despite the obstacles of the United States or their own country.” Paul Johnson, leader of the US-Cuba Agricultural Coalition: “The private sector is the new revolution in Cuba” “And that is the new revolution that we have to understand, instead of speaking in terms of the 1959 revolution, communism, socialism, capitalism, and those restrictive categories of how we see Cuba today. We have to educate our side about those realities. And frankly, we are behind. Our side doesn’t understand it,” said in Havana Paul Johnson, leader of the United States-Cuba Agricultural Coalition. 13 . The U.S. government reiterated its intention to support the growing private sector in Cuba as a factor in containing the historical influence of Moscow and Beijing on the island for more than six decades. At a hearing before the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Brian Nichols said the United States remains concerned about attempts by Russia and China to “shape the nature of Cuba’s future.” The event inquired about the topic entitled “Competition among great powers in the Western Hemisphere,” two hundred years after the implementation of the Monroe Doctrine, a key strategy of U.S. foreign policy to defend its interests in Latin America and the Caribbean, then from colonial European powers. 15 . The Cuban government declared its displeasure at the presence of a U.S. war submarine in Guantanamo Bay because visits by naval means are “an invitation, and this is not the case.” Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Carlos Fernández de Cossío said: “We obviously do not like the presence in our territory and transiting through our waters of a medium of that nature, belonging to a power that maintains an official and practical policy that is hostile against Cuba.” 21 . The number of Cubans with humanitarian parole continued to grow, although not at the same rate as the high number of applications. More than 100,000 Cubans born on the island had received this immigration benefit from the U.S. authorities by May, according to official data. Of these, approximately 98,200 had already entered the country, the CBP said in its report . 21. Some 56 Cubans were returned to the island in what was the 15th deportation flight from the United States this year, according to the U.S. Embassy in Havana. This group brought the total to 48 operations of this type, involving 744 irregular migrants returned from different countries in the region, both by air and sea, the Ministry of the Interior (MININT) detailed. 23. The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency is seeking to resume direct deportation flights of Venezuelan migrants to their country and to increase repatriations of Cubans, which was restarted this year after being suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic. 25 . The U.S. government again included Cuba on its human trafficking blacklist, an issue on which Washington and Havana have openly opposing interpretations. U.S. once again includes Cuba on its human trafficking blacklist As last year, the island was placed on the most serious level of the annual report on the subject, published by the State Department, which includes countries that, in the opinion of the U.S. authorities, do not meet the minimum standards for the elimination of this scourge and do not make significant efforts to do so. 30. Wayne Smith , former U.S. diplomat and academic and former head of the Interests Section in Cuba between 1979 and 1982, died at the age of 92. He worked for decades to normalize relations between Cuba and the United States, advocated for the elimination of the embargo/blockade, for the return of the territory occupied by the Guantanamo Naval Base, and condemned terrorism and hostile policies. “The idea that by maintaining the embargo and a hostile environment we could overthrow the Castro government was absurd. It was a delusion on the part of the United States and U.S. leaders,” he said in an interview with AFP in 2015, more than thirty years after finishing his diplomatic mission in Havana. July 10 . The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops urged the Joe Biden administration to remove Cuba from the list of countries sponsoring terrorism and begin the path of mutual understanding. In a letter addressed to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the president of the Justice and Peace Committee, Bishop Elías Zaidan, reaffirmed the position of the Conference, which together with the Holy See and governments and international organizations, have also called for the lifting of the embargo/blockade by Washington. 31 . Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez considered recent accusations from the United States that Cuba seeks to influence the electoral process in that country to be “unfounded.” “Accusations about Cuba’s influence in U.S. elections are unfounded. We do not interfere in the internal affairs of other countries,” the Cuban Foreign Minister said on X. The publication responds to statements by an official from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, according to whom the Cuban government carries out “influence operations” in U.S. elections. August 01 . A total of 46 congresspeople urged President Biden to reverse the designation that weighs on Cuba as a state sponsor of terrorism and recognized its participation in the peace process and agreements in Colombia. 07 . The United States Mint announced that Celia Cruz was chosen, along with four other exemplary women in history, to appear on the 25-cent coin. The Cuban star will be immortalized on the new commemorative quarter as part of the U.S. Women’s 25-cent Coin Program this 2024, Billboard magazine reported . 10. Chicken exports from the United States to Cuba fell in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period last year. However, the value of chicken imported by the island from the neighboring country was now higher. Between January and June, exports of this product to Cuba were 127,000 tons ― equivalent to about 5,000 containers ― while in those same months of 2023, they had been a bit over 139,000. 14 . The United States Embassy in Havana announced the expansion of its services with the purpose of including “certain categories of temporary work visas and exchange programs.” Cubans with temporary work petitions approved by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will be able to schedule a visa interview in Havana. Likewise, participants in exchange visit programs with an approved Certificate of Eligibility will be able to do so. 20. With the humanitarian parole program on hold due to irregularities and cases of fraud detected by the authorities, the number of approved Cubans reached 110,000. By the end of July, that was the number of Cubans examined and authorized to travel to U.S. territory, something that some 109,000 had already done at that time. The number represented a growth of more than 3,000 compared to June when 106,757 had already been approved. Adding the year 2023 and the seven months of 2024, Cubans continued to be third in the number of approved people among the four nations that make up the program. 29 . The U.S. government resumed the allocation of humanitarian permits for emigrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela in a number of up to 360,000 people per year. U.S. resumes humanitarian parole for immigrants from Cuba, Nicaragua, Venezuela and Haiti The Department of Homeland Security confirmed the resumption of the process after a pause of almost four weeks. A statement from the entity explained that the selection process has been improved, especially that of the sponsors of the people who apply for parole. September 13. Minister of Foreign Affairs Bruno Rodríguez called on the U.S. government to respond to the questions of Cuban entrepreneurs about the application of the measures announced by the Biden administration last May . He said that the possibility of opening bank accounts in dollars in the United States is inapplicable and that “so far no movement has occurred.” Bruno Rodríguez: “The U.S. measures for Cuban entrepreneurs are inapplicable” “They have not been applied because the oppressive and suffocating framework of the blockade prevents it. You have to be crazy to interact with Cuban entities under that oppressive circumstance. The risks for U.S. banks, for example, are very great,” he said. The Foreign Ministry also questioned how technology companies could discern between state and private enterprises to offer Internet services that are currently blocked, another of the measures that the Biden administration announced in May. 19 . President Biden has extended for another year the Trading with the Enemy Act, a 1917 regulation under which the embargo/blockade on Cuba was imposed. “I hereby determine that the continued exercise of such authorities with respect to Cuba for one year is in the national interest of the United States,” Biden said in the brief memorandum sent to the Treasury Department, published in the Federal Register . 20. Cuban pianist Jesús Chucho Valdés and saxophonist and clarinetist Paquito D’Rivera already have a commemorative date on the calendar. The city of Saint Louis, in the southern state of Missouri, declared that every September 19 will be the day of both Cuban musicians in the United States. 22 . The 5th Meeting of Residents in the United States that took place at the Cuban mission to the United Nations in New York, reaffirmed the government’s will to promote relations with its compatriots in that country, according to a note from the Prensa Latina news agency. Among the main concerns, the diaspora learned in depth about the recently approved laws on migration, nationality and aliens, which are about to come into force. According to Ana Teresita González, head of the General Department of Consular Affairs and Assistance to Cubans Living Abroad (DGACCRE), “we are willing to analyze any project or business.” The DGACCRE will support initiatives promoted by Cubans residing outside the national territory. October 02 . The children’s theater company La Colmenita concluded its tour of the United States in Washington DC, which included visits and performances in Tampa and New York. The presentation in the U.S. capital took place at the Imagination Stage theater with the staging of Cinderella according to The Beatles , a free version in English by the founder and director of the group Carlos Alberto Cremata of the popular fairytale “Cinderella.” 02 . In recent years, Cuba has faced “a growing open incitement to violence from the United States,” said Cuban Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Josefina Vidal Ferreiro. The Cuban government has repeatedly notified the authorities of these events, she said at the International Conference on Victims of Terrorism organized by the UN and the government of Spain in the city of Vitoria. 12 . The famous filmmaker and activist Michael Moore asked Joe Biden, in his last 100 days in office as president, to lift the embargo on Cuba and close the Guantanamo naval base. 12 . Cuba imported 46 times more used cars from the United States than food in August, according to a report published by the Economic Eye On Cuba (EEOC) blog , which uses official data provided by various U.S. agencies, including the Department of Commerce. The purchases, which must be paid in cash because Washington does not extend commercial credits to Cuba due to sanctions, do not take into account the sectors, state or private, responsible for the acquisitions. 17 . The Cuban government denounced the “lack of will” that in its opinion the U.S. authorities demonstrate in the face of the attacks suffered by the embassy in Washington. There is “a lack of will and to a certain extent complicity on the part of the federal agencies of the United States that are in charge of preventing terrorist actions,” said Johana Tablada, deputy director for the United States of the Cuban Foreign Ministry. 22 . The U.S. government said it is following “closely” the blackouts that Cuba has suffered in recent days and assured that it does not rule out providing aid to the island. 23 . The ruling of a federal appeals court in the United States on Tuesday overturned the judicial decision that forced several cruise companies to pay fines of more than 400 million dollars for having carried out operations using properties confiscated by the Cuban government after 1959, without compensation to their owners. 24. The Court of Appeals of the 11th Circuit based in the city of Atlanta backed the claim of Carnival, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean and MSC Cruises, affected by the verdict issued at the end of 2022 by U.S. District Judge Beth Bloom, by a 2-1 vote, the Miami Herald reported . 24. “If the U.S. government is truly willing to help, it knows and clearly understands where it can make a difference and what needs to be done. There is no need for too many explanations or specific requests,” responded Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernández de Cossío. The New York Times publishes letter to Biden demanding end to “brutal” policy on Cuba 30 . With 187 votes in favor, one abstention and two votes against, the United Nations General Assembly once again supported the Cuban government’s resolution on “the need to put an end to the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States.” The votes against were from the United States and Israel, and Moldova abstained. November 10. According to the New York-based U.S. Trade & Economic Council, Inc., U.S. agricultural and food exports to Cuba increased by 53.3% in September 2024. They were $31,150,492, compared to $20,317,573 in September 2023 and $38,167,679 in September 2022. All of this is taking place within the framework of the Trade Sanctions Reform and Export Enhancement Act (TSREEA) of 2000, the Cuban Democracy Act (CDA) of 1992, and regulations implemented (1992 to date) for other products by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) of the U.S. Department of Commerce. 16. The U.S. Embassy in Havana announced the arrival of a new Chief of Mission (Chargé d’Affaires): career diplomat Mike Hammer, 60 years old and with more than three decades of service. Hammer, who recently served as Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, has a diplomatic career as ambassador to Chile and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in addition to working as a diplomat in Bolivia, Norway, Iceland and Denmark. 20 . A group of 18 congresspeople urged President Biden to ease sanctions against Cuba and eliminate its designation among the nations sponsoring terrorism . The letter is driven by a “deep sense of urgency” and requests “immediate actions to stabilize Cuba’s energy infrastructure and provide critical humanitarian assistance.” 28. The Cuban government referred for the first time to Donald Trump ’s victory in the elections and assured that “the country is prepared” for a new term of the Republicans. President Miguel Díaz-Canel said that the election results “are not new” and were a “scenario predicted” by the Cuban authorities. He reiterated his criticism of the U.S. sanctions, a package he described as “perverse and genocidal.” He recalled that the last series of sanctions was imposed during the first term of Republican Trump and that the current U.S. president has maintained “the same position of hostility.” “The Cuban people are currently facing widespread blackouts and a growing energy crisis, exacerbated by the impact of Hurricane Rafael. The situation is not only causing immense suffering to the Cuban people but also poses serious risks to the national security interests of the United States.” 29 . The private MSME Danaus SRL won a victory in a U.S. court against the company Overseas of the Americas Corp., as reported by Univision. The ruling responds to a lawsuit for breach of a contract for the sale of a load of chicken for a total value of 84,000 dollars. Danaus SRL is a company based in Havana that is dedicated to the distribution of wholesale products throughout Cuba, according to its social networks. Meanwhile, Overseas of the Americas Corp. is based in the state of Florida and was created on July 6, 2021. The case creates a precedent for businesspeople to be able to file lawsuits from Cuba against U.S. entities. December 05 . The Cuban government estimated that it is “not realistic” for the next Republican administration of Donald Trump to deport the “hundreds of thousands” of Cubans currently living illegally in the United States. Given the imminent arrival of Trump to the White House on January 20, and the promises of the president-elect to carry out mass deportations from the first day of his mandate, the Cuban authorities assured that any proposal of this type would have to be examined within the limits of the existing agreements between Washington and Havana. “In that context, it is not realistic to think that there will be mass deportations from the United States to Cuba,” said Cuban Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Carlos Fernández de Cossío, cited by the Reuters news agency. 06 . A foreign adversary of the United States is likely responsible for some of the Havana Syndrome incidents, a House of Representatives investigative committee has concluded, debunking the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) version and accusing it of withholding valuable information. Representative Rick Crawford, chairman of the House Intelligence Subcommittee that oversees the CIA, released an interim report that castigates the U.S. intelligence community for “attempting to frustrate” the investigation and producing a “dubious or misleading” prior assessment that dismissed the incidents, reported an article published in El Nuevo Herald , Miami. “It seems increasingly likely and the chairman [of the subcommittee] is convinced that a foreign adversary is behind some” of these incidents, the report said. 11 . U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Wednesday that he “does not anticipate” any change in Cuba policy before outgoing President Joe Biden leaves power on January 20, 2025. “I do not anticipate any change in our policy toward Cuba by this administration,” said the head of U.S. diplomacy during an appearance before a parliamentary committee. 11 . The Cuban Foreign Ministry responded to the approval of the “No Recognized Stolen Brands” law, recently signed by President Joe Biden, with a strong condemnation. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MINREX) considers it a “unilateral coercive” measure that reinforces Washington’s embargo against the island’s economy, which is going through the worst moment of its prolonged economic crisis. 13. The U.S. government decided to keep Cuba for another year on the list of countries that in its opinion sponsor terrorism , which entails a series of sanctions for the island. This is stated in the 2023 report on terrorism in the world published this Thursday by the State Department. Cuba shares a category with North Korea, Iran and Syria, countries that Washington accuses of “providing repeated support to acts of international terrorism.” 17. The Cuban government denied that it is uncomfortable with the political rapprochement with the United States and acknowledged that it is “concerned” about the economic effect that a second Donald Trump term may have. “Of course, we are concerned about the effect that greater hostility from the United States, which has proven to be very powerful and to have a very effective destructive capacity to cause damage, may have on our economy, and in particular, the effect it may have on the standard of living of the population,” said Cuban Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Carlos Fernández de Cossío. WASHINGTON - Call it a very uncivil war, a food fight or even a pig pile. An argument pitting some of President-elect Donald Trump’s biggest supporters against each other has rocked MAGA world in recent days over whether his incoming administration should allow more highly skilled immigrant labor to come to the United States at the expense of American workers. What makes the beef especially awkward - or delicious, depending on who you ask – is that Trump’s D.O.G.E. duo of tech billionaires , Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy , are at the center of it. And the brawl is taking place almost entirely on Musk’s X platform, the informal public square for Trump’s whole Make America Great Again movement. On one side are Musk, the world's richest man, and Ramaswamy, who is worth an estimated $1 billion from his Roivant Sciences pharmaceutical company. The two, and other venture capitalists, say in recent posts that America needs more highly-skilled workers to come to the United States under what’s known as the H-1B program . They argue an expansion of the temporary work visa program is desperately needed to attract global talent for innovation and competitiveness in technology sectors. On the other side are some of Trump’s more traditional hardline conservative backers, who say such a reliance on bringing in foreign workers to the country is a slap in the face to American citizens after immigration served as a critical campaign plank that helped Trump win the White House in November. More: Trump taps Elon Musk, Vivek Ramaswamy to lead new 'Department of Government Efficiency' It also goes against Trump’s “America First” agenda and proposed crackdown on immigration, they argue, for billionaires like Musk and Ramaswamy to argue for bringing in more workers through H-1B instead of investing in training and developing Americans for those coveted jobs. It's one of the first riffs between factions of Trump's MAGA constituency since the 2024 election's conclusion, with Musk, Ramaswamy and other participants trending on X in the days since the dispute began. At issue is the H-1B program, which applies to employers seeking to hire “nonimmigrant aliens as workers in specialty occupations” that require “highly specialized knowledge” and at least a college bachelor’s degree, according to the Department of Labor. The federal agency says H-1B is specifically designed to help employers “who cannot otherwise obtain needed business skills and abilities from the U.S. workforce by authorizing the temporary employment of qualified individuals” from outside the U.S. Trump’s transition team had no comment when asked whether the president-elect was taking sides in the H-1B battle. But it referred USA TODAY to an X post sent Thursday from Trump’s longtime immigration policy czar Stephen Miller, which cited a 2020 Trump speech praising the “miraculous story” of all of the homegrown American heroes who built the country from scratch. What sparked the contretemps? The conflict came to a head Sunday when Trump named Silicon Valley veteran Sriram Krishnan to serve as his senior policy advisor for artificial intelligence inside the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. Born and educated in India, Krishnan came to the U.S. in 2007. More recently he's been an associate of Musk’s who reportedly assisted in his revamp of X , formerly Twitter, after Musk bought it for $44 billion in 2022. Krishnan began taking heavy fire on X after MAGA hardliners resurfaced two recent X posts in which he appeared to argue for expanding H-1B and even ditching a current 7% cap that has created huge backlogs in countries like India and China with big pools of highly-skilled workers vying for U.S. jobs. “Anything to remove country caps for green cards / unlock skilled immigration would be huge ,” Krishnan posted on Nov. 14. Asked by an X user that same day whether “ country caps ... might backfire ,” Krishnan doubled down, saying, “simple logic - we need the best, regardless of where they happen to be born.” Fast forward to Christmas Day : Musk made himself a lightning rod for the MAGA critics, saying tech companies need to double the number of the visa to attract “super talented engineers AND super motivated” workers. “It comes down to this: do you want America to WIN or do you want America to LOSE,” Musk wrote in one of many X posts on the topic, this one seen by 9.1 million people. “If you force the world’s best talent to play for the other side, America will LOSE. End of story.” Ramaswamy, a first-generation American citizen whose parents immigrated from India, also drew the rath of some MAGA hardliners when he argued that American culture “has venerated mediocrity over excellence,” beginning in grade school and carrying over into the professional world. That, he posted on X, is the “reason top tech companies often hire foreign-born & first-generation engineers over ‘native’ Americans.” Critics quickly shifted their anger from Krishnan to Musk and Ramaswamy, who Trump tapped six weeks ago to co-lead a new Department of Government Efficiency that will work to slash federal government spending, waste and regulations. Some charged that Musk and Ramaswamy, a former 2024 Republican presidential candidate and Trump rival, had a financial interest, given that their own companies depend on foreign workers to operate. “This is code for: ‘I don’t want to shrink my current piece of the pie to invest in the engines needed to cultivate Americans who can do the job, develop the American human capital here for intangible long-term impacts, and instead import it for at a lower cost and higher return now,” one X poster replied to Musk. Replying to a critic, Musk defended his position by saying, “The number of people who are super talented engineers AND super motivated in the USA is far too low.” That prompted critics to attack Musk for implying that Americans not only lacked the requisite talent to work for people like him, but that they were lazy as well. “Open a school,” one retorted . “We have brains.” MAGA heavyweight and The Federalist CEO Sean Davis described the H-1B program as a kind of cheap pool of indentured servants. “Corporations love H-1B visas,” Davis tweeted , “because they allow the company to pay below market wages AND control the foreigners they hire, because the employers, not the workers, own the visas—if a newly imported foreigner leaves the sponsoring company, he has to leave the country.” MAGA ally and provocateur Laura Loomer also stepped in, saying Musk’s massive business presence in China made him something of an agent of the Communist regime who couldn’t be trusted on immigration issues. “We all know you only donated your money so you could influence immigration policy and protect your buddy Xi JinPing (sic),” the Chinese leader. On Friday, as Musk continued to parry with critics, longtime Trump ally Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene – noting the “ MAGA split over this issue ” - appeared to criticize “some big MAGA voices with large social media platforms throwing down their opinions.” Greene , a Georgia Republican, didn’t name Musk or Ramaswamy by name. But she told H-1B supporters to instead invest “here in the U.S. to educate, build, and facilitate a solid foundation of knowledgeable, highly skilled, talented, well paid, AMERICAN workers.” What does Trump say? While Trump campaigned in 2024 as a hardliner on illegal immigration, his stance on the legal pipeline for entry is less well-formed, especially when it comes to green cards as a gateway to permanent residency in the U.S. Trump has targeted the H-1B program in past remarks and restricted some access to foreign worker visas during his first term. More recently, though, he has suggested he might be more open to more foreign-born workers. So far, Trump appears to be staying out of the current fight. But in a cryptic twist on Friday morning, the president-elect sent out a tweet left open to interpretation, with some musing it was meant as a direct message to Musk instead. The post quickly went viral, which much speculation that Trump was asking his biggest campaign donor and his son X, short for X AE A-XII, to come back to his Palm Beach estate and club. The two have spent much time there as Musk helps Trump with his transition moves since his Nov. 5 election victory. “Where are you? When are you coming to the ‘Center of the Universe,’ Mar-a-Lago,” Trump asks in the X post. “Bill Gates asked to come, tonight. We miss you and x! New Year’s Eve is going to be AMAZING!!! DJT.” Trump’s transition team had no comment as to whether the message was meant for Musk.

One day after Danny Hurley’s meltdown against Memphis made national headlines , No. 2 UConn lost again. The two-time defending national champion Huskies will play in the 7th-place game in the Maui Invitational after falling to Colorado, 73-72, in Maui. The Huskies will face either Iowa State or Dayton on Wednesday. “Colorado, what.a great upset over UConn after the difficult game they had against Michigan State yesterday,” ESPN’s Jay Bilas said on air. Hurley did have to be restrained by associate head coach Kimani Young with 18 seconds remaining when no over-the-back foul was called on Colorado’s Trevor Baskin against Liam McNeeley that was similar to the one that was called on McNeeley in overtime of the Memphis game. Hurley was not fined or suspended following Monday’s meltdown in which he told an official he was a “f--king joke” with the Memphis game tied at 92. UConn ended up losing 99-97 in overtime. Oh and Dan Hurley handled it well again pic.twitter.com/n0k2qbpZ6r For Colorado, Andrej Jakimovski scored on a straight line drive layup to push the Buffaloes ahead 73-72 with 5.9 seconds remaining. “They’re not gonna win games if they can’t guard the basketball, and they’re not going to win games if Alex Karaban goes 1-for-8,” Seth Greenberg said on air. Andrej called game. 📺ESPN2 pic.twitter.com/Dnhf5hAjgz After a UConn timeout, Hassan Diarra missed a desperation 3-pointer as time expired. Jaylin Stewart made a putback off a Diarra miss that was tapped toward Stewart by Alex Karaban to push the score to 72-69 with 1:29 remaining. Elijah Malone (20 points) hit a layup to cut it to 72-71 with about a minute remaining. McNeeley, whose stock is rising with NBA scouts, finished with a team-best 20 points for UConn, including 4-of-6 from deep. Thank you for relying on us to provide the journalism you can trust. INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — For the second straight season, the Philadelphia Eagles are headed to SoFi Stadium with a lengthy winning streak and a team that looks like one of the best in the NFC. The Los Angeles Rams (5-5) couldn't do much to slow them down last season, but they'll try again Sunday night with a young team that hopes to get where the Eagles (8-2) are already standing — atop their division with a six-game winning streak. Philadelphia also made this road trip in October 2023 for a meeting of the previous two NFC champions, and the unbeaten Eagles held on for a 23-14 victory despite failing to score a touchdown in the second half. Jalen Hurts passed for 303 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 72 yards and another score, while Jalen Carter sacked Matthew Stafford twice while the Eagles prevented LA from crossing midfield in the second half. “I just remember that they do a great job of controlling the game,” Rams coach Sean McVay said. “They shortened the game, and that’s been a consistent theme that they do an excellent job of. I remember feeling like that’s a good team, and we had our chances, but they certainly made it difficult for us and they earned that win.” Philadelphia comes into the rematch on extra rest after beating Washington 26-18 in a Thursday night game. The young Rams have won four of their past five , but they haven't managed the consistency necessary to become an elite team. The Eagles’ NFL-best defense includes one of the league’s best cornerback duos in Darius Slay and rookie Quinyon Mitchell. The Rams’ offense is built around Stafford’s ability to get the ball to Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua, two of the NFL’s top wideouts. That dual matchup should determine whether the Rams can score enough points to keep up with Philadelphia. “Their personnel is as good as it gets, as far as we’ve seen,” Stafford said of the Eagles defense. “I've just watched them from afar. It’s impressive what you see on tape. They do a really nice job of disguising their looks and giving you a bunch of things to look at.” The game also features the two front-runners for the AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award. Mitchell is widely considered the top rookie cornerback in the league, but Los Angeles edge rusher Jared Verse is the consensus favorite for the award so far after his dynamic start to the season with 4 1/2 sacks and 11 tackles for loss. Hurts is expected to play Sunday after being limited in practice this week by an ankle injury. He said the limited practice was part of a program put together by the Eagles to strengthen his recovery with extra days off. He also cleared concussion protocol after his head was spiked into the ground against Washington. Hurts has 2,197 yards passing with 12 TDs and five interceptions. Thanks in large part to the “tush push,” Hurts has 11 rushing TDs. “It’s not necessarily about all health,” Hurts said. “I think it’s a mentality where we are. We’re in a phase of the year where things could have very easily, well, they didn’t end the way we wanted to (last season). So that’s in the back of my mind as we enter this phase and putting an emphasis on finishing strong, putting ourselves in a good place.” The Eagles remain confident in kicker Jake Elliott as he comes off perhaps the worst game of his career, missing two field goals and an extra point against Washington. Elliott signed a four-year, $24 million extension in March, but he has already missed five field-goal attempts this season. He holds the franchise record with seven field goals of 50 yards or more in a season, but has missed all four attempts from 50-plus in 2024. “It’s funny with Jake, he’s such a competitor and such a good kicker, you almost take it a little bit for granted when he’s out there; it’s an automatic,” special teams coach Michael Clay said. “But I have such supreme confidence in Jake. At times, it’s just not your day. We’d be probably a little bit more on edge if the ball was sprayed all over the place.” The Eagles are rolling with six straight wins out of the bye, and only Detroit has a better record in the NFC. But Philly fans know better than to expect good times ahead after the Eagles turned a 10-1 start last season into a 1-5 finish and a playoff loss in the wild-card round. So why should anyone expect the Eagles to keep it together this season instead of collapsing yet again? “I think we’ve got some really good teammates and coaches. Everyone is just so locked in to becoming better,” coach Nick Sirianni said. “I do feel like that, that everyone is locked in to becoming better. I felt that way last year, too. Don’t get me wrong. It didn’t work. There were things that happened last year that we feel like we’ve corrected, that we’re on the right track.” AP Sports Writer Dan Gelston in Philadelphia contributed. The pair made the most of their opportunity to play Test cricket amid a long list of injured bowlers and emphasised the country’s long tradition of producing quality quicks. Bosch was making his debut and became the 25th player to take a wicket with his first delivery in Test cricket before bagging three more wickets for an impressive return of 4-63. The 35-year-old Paterson went one better with a five-wicket haul for a second successive Test as he belied his age and continued a positive return to the test arena. Bosch and Paterson were the change bowlers for South Africa, whose all-seam attack against Pakistan was spearheaded by regulars Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen but who were overshadowed by Bosch and Paterson. South Africa was 3-82. Not since David Hookes in the Centenary Test in 1977 has a debutant appeared on cricket’s biggest stage and given it a shake-up as audacious as this. Bazball is a reinvention of Test cricket, but on Boxing Day, Sam Konstas, the 19-year-old Sydneysider of Greek heritage, inverted the game altogether. One orthodox backfoot defence in mid-morning was greeted with a round of applause because it was the novelty. More than a first impression, it was meteorite’s crater. Punjab Kings Squad for IPL 2025: Vijaykumar Vyshak Sold to PBKS for INR 1.8 Crore at Indian Premier League AuctionNEW YORK — A Giants locker room under Ben McAdoo, Pat Shurmur and Joe Judge never called out its coaches and players after a game the way Brian Daboll’s did on Sunday. Brian Burns was asked: Is the coaches’ message still getting through? “Um,” he said. Then he paused for a few seconds. “I would like to think that,” Burns said. “The reason I say I would like to think that is because everybody has the right answers, but it’s not showing up where it needs to show up.” Maybe the players are venting louder than ever because the locker room has never been provoked this directly by management. GM Joe Schoen might have let both the NFL MVP and Defensive Player of the Year leave the Giants in the same offseason for nothing. As Burns, Malik Nabers, Dexter Lawrence and other Giants players struggled to contain their frustrations, former Giants teammate Xavier McKinney was moving into the Defensive Player of the Year conversation with his seventh interception to tie for the league lead. The Giants defense as a whole has just one. McKinney’s Green Bay Packers are now 8-3. Hours later, former Giants teammate Saquon Barkley charged ahead as the NFL MVP frontrunner with 255 rushing yards, 302 total yards and two touchdowns of 70 and 72 yards, respectively. Barkley credited his “fresh start” with the 9-2 Eagles for his resurgence after the game. “I’ve never seen a running back like Saquon Barkley,” Rams pass rusher Jared Verse said. Barkley’s talent isn’t just what’s missing with the Giants, though. As wide receiver Darius Slayton told the New York Daily News this week, Barkley’s role with the Giants was “bigger than football.” Three-time Super Bowl champion Tedy Bruschi took it step further Sunday morning on ESPN when describing the Giants’ decision to sign Daniel Jones and let Barkley walk. “Schoen chose quarterback over culture, because Saquon was the culture,” Bruschi said. “He even let McKinney go. I think Schoen is fractured from this locker room. He doesn’t know what’s going on in there, because how could you not know how important this player was to not only your team but to your culture?” Three-time Pro Bowler Alex Smith said on ESPN that “there’s a lot of dysfunction on the personnel side, and Saquon’s obviously highlighting it. “If it’s not tanking, it’s incompetency,” he said. “You can’t identify and develop talent, and there’s a real problem there.” The loss of culture and leadership doesn’t stop at Barkley and McKinney. Jones was a key leader, taking teammates out to weekly dinners and setting an example with his work ethic. Seahawks safety Julian Love and defensive lineman Leonard Williams were tied directly to the leadership and fabric and camaraderie of the locker room, too. Now, Dexter Lawrence is rocking himself back and forth on the sidelines as the leader of this team, trying not to blow a gasket again. The Jones shut down due to a salary cap penalty in 2025 for injury sent a destructive message, and the players are responding in turn. “You don’t want us to win, and that’s what you think if you’re in that locker room right now,” Bruschi said. “This is a tank job, I would be thinking if I was in that locker room — that you don’t care to put the best players on the field because it’s too much money for you. “So now, how do we feel in the locker room?” Bruschi said. “I’m just gonna do my job, try to stay healthy, do the best I can to survive this season, and we’ll see what happens if this is even our coach next year.” How fed up is Burns with results like Sunday’s 30-7 embarrassment? “I’m gettin’ there,” he said. More like the Giants’ players are already there. ©2024 New York Daily News. Visit nydailynews.com . Distributed by Tribune Content Agency, LLC.Saudi Arabia registered its second straight win in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Asia Qualifier after beating Cambodia by five wickets in Qatar on Monday. Opener Faisal Khan scored his maiden T20I century as the Kingdom chased down a target of 162 runs with 28 balls remaining. Faisal is the second Saudi player to score a century in the tournament, following his elder brother Abdul Waheed, who scored a century in the first match against Bahrain and also happens to be his opening partner. Against Cambodia, Faisal completed his half-century in just 20 balls, with 22 runs coming off the last four balls of Shah Abrar Hussain’s fifth over. Faisal’s blitzkrieg innings meant Saudi Arabia was 86-0 at the end of six overs. Faisal and Abdul shared a 116-run partnership for the first wicket in just 9.5 overs as Saudi Arabia started off well. Abdul was stumped for 34 runs off Chadha, a dismissal that left Faisal fuming. Even though the chase was half done, Faisal felt it would have been special to share the moment of his century with his elder brother. He was batting on 81 when Abdul returned to the pavilion. Faisal needed six more balls to reach three figures as he hit a six off Gireesh when on 94. Faisal was caught out on the last ball of the same over, ending with 101 runs off 42 balls. He hit six fours and 10 sixes in his innings. Faisal is only the third Saudi player to score a century in T20Is, after Waji Ul Hasan’s 115 not out vs. Bhutan in February 2024 and elder brother Abdul’s 110 vs. Bahrain last Tuesday. Faisal said that the moment would have been even more special had Abdul been with him at the other end. “I was very angry when he got out and the way he got dismissed. I was hitting the ball well, so, he just needed to occupy the crease and be with me. We have come through a lot, and had he been there, it would have been even more special,” he told Arab News. He feels it is easier to bat with his brother at the other end. “We play for Pak Shaeens back in Saudi Arabia, so, there is an understanding in the game. We have started playing together too, and whenever he is around, I am comfortable. It feels like my brother will make it right if something goes wrong from my end,” he added. Elder brother Waheed was happy to see Faisal back in form and said it was a proud moment for the family. “The moment he got to the century was special, even though I was clapping from the pavilion. I know he feels comfortable talking and batting with me, as we share feedback consistently. It is a proud moment for our family that both of us have scored centuries. I hope we can contribute similarly to our team’s success in the coming days,” he said. Saudi Arabia needed only 21 runs when Faisal was out. They lost two more wickets but were safely home in the 16th over. Faisal said that the team was looking for a big win from ball one, as they had an eye on the run rate. “We needed to win big to stay in the hunt for qualification, and hitting the ball was the approach from ball one. The ball was coming well off my bat, and I just kept using powerplay restrictions to my advantage. I knew we could chase the total within 14-15 overs,” he said. Earlier in the day, Cambodia put up 161 runs for six wickets in their 20 overs after being invited to bat first at the University of Doha for Science and Technology ground. Lakshit Gupta top-scored with 62 runs off 45 balls, hitting four fours and three sixes. Uday Hathinjar added 16 runs and Luqman Butt contributed 26 runs, helping to build the score. Mahaj Chadha also played well toward the end, scoring 24 runs not out. Cambodia had two strong partnerships at the start, with Hathinjar and Gupta adding 46 runs in five overs. Luqman stayed with Gupta to reach 109 in the 14th over, but the wickets tumbled at regular intervals thereafter. Ishtiaq Ahmad and Usman Najeeb took two wickets each for Saudi Arabia. After losing the first two matches against Bahrain and the UAE, Saudi Arabia has won three consecutive games, putting the side back in the frame for qualification. The top two teams from this seven-team qualifier will qualify for the regional final, which serves as a pathway for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup to be held in 2026. Saudi Arabia is fourth in the table with four points and will face third-place Thailand, who have six points. The UAE and Qatar, who face each other on Tuesday, are both unbeaten and have eight points from four matches. Bahrain also has four points but is behind Saudi Arabia in net run rate. Cambodia and Bhutan are at the bottom without any points. Saudi Arabia is facing Thailand on Tuesday and will face Qatar on Thursday, which could be a winner-takes-all match to get to the qualifier. Faisal is focused on the match against Thailand, taking the remaining matches as two finals. “We know how important the match against Qatar is going to be, but first, we are focused on the Thailand match. We will try to give our best to get the win and then only think about Qatar. A win is the only result that will take us forward, so, we are determined to make it happen. To get better matches, to improve our ranking and to make ourselves better, we need to win the two finals from here,” he added. Faisal feels that the tournament is very important for the development of the sport in the Kingdom, too. “If we go through to the qualifiers, we will have more programs. Right now, there are no turf pitches for us to train on, which is why we find it hard in the first matches. Getting to the next round will only aid our development phase, and we are hopeful of achieving it,” he said. For the final round of regional qualifiers, Malaysia and Kuwait have already booked their spots from the Asia Group A qualifier, while Samoa and Japan are representing the East Asia-Pacific region. Nepal, Oman and Papua New Guinea will also compete in the regional finals as they qualified for the 2024 edition of the T20 World Cup, held in the US and West Indies.z jay

Tokyo [Japan], November 30 (ANI): Tokyo Metropolitan University researchers employed long-term skin conductance measurements to distinguish between emotions. Volunteers were given videos representing frightening scenarios, family bonding, and humour, while their skin conductance was measured. The team’s investigation revealed that traces might be used to create accurate estimations about which emotions were being experienced. Advances like this assist in reducing an overreliance on facial data, bringing emotionally sensitive technologies closer to home. A new frontier is being pioneered in consumer electronics: one day, digital devices might be able to offer services depending on your emotional state. While this sounds amazing, this depends on whether devices can correctly tell what people are feeling. The most common methods depend on facial expressions: while these have had some success, such data may not always be available. This has led to researchers looking for different biological signals which could be interpreted to access emotional states, like brain wave measurements or cardiograms. A team of scientists led by Professor Shogo Okamoto from Tokyo Metropolitan University have been using skin conductance as a doorway to human emotions. When people feel different things, the electrical properties of their skin change drastically due to perspiration, with signals showing up within one to three seconds of the original stimulus. Previous research has already shown that measurements of peak conductance, for example, can be correlated with certain emotions. In their most recent work, the team focused on the dynamics of the response i.e. how quickly the conductance trace following some stimulus reaches a peak, and how it decays back to normal. In their experiment, volunteers were asked to wear probes on the skin and watch videos which were either scary scenes from horror movies, emotional scenes of family bonding, or funny acts performed by comedians. Importantly, each of the scenes had well-defined points at which a certain emotional stimulus was sought. Analyzing the traces, the team found many interesting and significant trends. For example, they found that the response to fear lasted the longest. This may be a biologically evolved trait, since there are benefits to perceptions of danger lasting longer. Comparing responses to humor and emotional scenes of family bonding, they found responses to family bonding seemed to increase more slowly. The emotions that were evoked were most likely a mixture of sadness and happiness, so it may be that they interfere with each other, leading to a slower change. Importantly, the team’s statistical analysis revealed that the different numbers extracted from the dynamics of the trace could be used to discriminate the emotional state of an individual. Though they can’t yet tell the emotions apart perfectly, the data could, for example, be used to make statistically significant predictions of whether a subject was experiencing fear or feeling the warmth of a family bond. Combined with other signals, the team believe we are one step closer to devices knowing how we are feeling, with scope for a better understanding of human emotions.
