Vital People: Grant helps church help the community with food-related projects Church members work at a local farm to grow produce to be given away to those who need it. Jeff Bell Dec 29, 2024 4:15 AM Share by Email Share on Facebook Share on X Share on LinkedIn Print Share via Text Message Volunteers Josephine Daud, left, Aaron Diemer, May Miller, Cherry Acorda and McCoy De Castro show off some of the fresh food available during a pop-up “mini market” at Coastline Church on Caledonia Avenue in Victoria. ADRIAN LAM, TIMES COLONIST Listen to this article 00:03:17 A $25,000 grant for the Victoria Foundation has helped Coastline Church boost its efforts to provide food to people in need, including a program that sees church members working at a farm to grow produce to be given away. The money has had a three-fold benefit — supporting the church’s work on the farm, helping with weekly pop-up “mini markets” to distribute food, and spurring the creation of a community kitchen, said church outreach co-ordinator Bridget Sterling. The pop-ups take place at different sites, including the church’s Caledonia Avenue location, the Cridge Centre for the family, Quadra Village and spots in downtown Victoria and in Langford near Costco. Church members volunteer to have the pop-ups on their property, and set them up in co-ordination with the Victoria Food Share Network, Sterling said. “There’s fresh food there, there’s canned food, bread,” she said. Church members regularly donate food to stock the mini markets. Sterling said the community kitchen is a pilot project for the entire community, and is focused on people who might have not done a lot of cooking or have lost their cooking skills. Being able to cook for yourself and prepare healthy meals can be a huge cost saver, and save the expense of ordering food in, Sterling said. Word of the community kitchen has been steadily getting around, she said. “Some people who signed up for the community kitchen found out about it through the mini markets.” Sterling said posts on social media are also helping. The Central Saanich farm the church is linked to is a steady food source from around March to November, she said, and people in the community keep track of what is available. “We get farm-fresh, chemical-free vegetables,” Sterling said. “The word gets out when things are in harvest.” Along with donating food and hosting the mini markets, church members also give their time to work the farm, she said. “It’s all run 100 per cent by volunteers,” she said. “People go out and weed, they bring their kids — it’s really fun.” The connection to the farm started through the Young Agrarians program, which involves farmers and others working with people interested in agriculture. Sterling said the church was matched with a local farmer, who has been charging only $50 a year in rent. “So he has a really big heart,” she said. “The farmer has always been a contributor to the Mustard Seed and other things.” She said she hopes the impact of the farm produce will continue to develop. “My dream is that we can actually start being able to have people using the farm-fresh ingredients to actually make really beautiful meals for their family,” she said. All of the work being done to bring food to people is fitting together well, Sterling said. While the community kitchen is just getting started, the mini markets have been running for five years and the association with the farm has been in effect for two years, she said. “We wouldn’t have been able to do it the way that we have without the Victoria Foundation,” she said. “They’ve been incredible.” [email protected] See a typo/mistake? A COUPLE were heading out for a family dinner when they were mown down and killed in a horrific hit-and-run near their home. Georgina Hogg Moore, 39, and her husband Anthony Hogg, 40, were just 180 metres from their home when they were struck by a grey Audi A7. The couple were crossing a road close to Blanchardstown Shopping Centre, west Dublin , around 5.45pm on St Stephen’s Day. The mum-of-two was pronounced dead at the scene while her husband was brought to hospital before passing away in the early hours of this morning. The couple’s daughter Becky, who is in her teens, also suffered bruising in the shocking crash but her injuries aren’t life threatening. The young woman is tonight being comforted by relatives. Gardai believe she may have been pushed to safety by her brave parents. The mum’s heartbroken cousin, Carly Gray, told The Irish Sun how the family had been left devastated by the tragedy. She said: “All we can say is that Georgina and Anthony are loved beyond measure and will forever be in our hearts. “This is a devastating tragedy that has torn our family apart. Two children have been left without both parents and their daughter witnessed such trauma. “They were just going out for dinner and their lives were taken — they have been taken from us all.” In a social media post, Ms Gray also posted: “If anyone has any information on who did this, please come forward. “My beautiful cousin Georgina and her husband. Two children left without a mother and father over a reckless driver.” The couple, from the Whitestown Avenue area of the capital, also lost their lives just three days after Mr Hogg celebrated his 40th birthday. One resident told us: “Georgina and Anto were brilliant parents and neighbours. It’s awful to think that something so bad could happen to a lovely family. “They were just so friendly and decent — and the whole nightmare is hard to comprehend. “The entire community has been left devastated by this and we’re all just heartbroken for their poor children, family and friends.” Another resident said: “Georgina and Anto were devoted to their children — that’s all they lived for.” Following the crash, the driver of the vehicle sped away from the scene. The car was recovered by Gardai in the Tyrrelstown area over an hour after the incident. The suspected driver, aged in his late 40s, later handed himself into Blanchardstown Garda station at about 10.30pm on St Stephen’s night. He’s being quizzed on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death. Gardai also confirmed they don’t believe the couple were deliberately targeted. He can be held for 24 hours before either being released or charged. The suspect is from the west Dublin area and has previous convictions for drugs but isn’t regarded as a major gangland player. One source told us: “It’s lucky that Gardai aren’t dealing with another death. “The couple’s daughter appears to have been hit by a wing mirror but it could have been a lot worse.” Detectives are also hoping to speak to the couple’s daughter once they have received the all-clear from medics. Fingal County Council Deputy Mayor John-Kingsley Onwumereh offered his condolences to the couple’s relatives. The Fianna Fail councillor said: “This is such a devastating incident to happen to the families and the wider community. “All our thoughts and prayers will be with those who lost their lives in this terrible incident. As the Garda probe continues, officers have urged anyone with information to come forward. They said: “Gardai appeal to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them. “Anyone with information is asked to contact Blanchardstown Garda station at 01 6667000 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800666111.”Unrivaled signs LSU star Flau'jae Johnson to NIL deal

Some quotations from Jimmy Carter . We have a tendency to exalt ourselves and to dwell on the weaknesses and mistakes of others. I have come to realize that in every person there is something fine and pure and noble, along with a desire for self-fulfillment. Political and religious leaders must attempt to provide a society within which these human attributes can be nurtured and enhanced. — from 1975 book “Why Not the Best?” ___ Our government can express the highest common ideals of human beings — if we demand of government true standards of excellence. At this Bicentennial time of introspection and concern, we must demand such standards. — “Why Not the Best?” ___ I am a Southerner and an American, I am a farmer, an engineer, a father and husband, a Christian, a politician and former governor, a planner, a businessman, a nuclear physicist, a naval officer, a canoeist, and among other things a lover of Bob Dylan’s songs and Dylan Thomas’s poetry. — “Why Not the Best?” ___ Christ said, “I tell you that anyone who looks on a woman with lust has in his heart already committed adultery.” I’ve looked on a lot of women with lust. I’ve committed adultery in my heart many times. This is something that God recognizes I will do — and I have done it — and God forgives me for it. But that doesn’t mean that I condemn someone who not only looks on a woman with lust but who leaves his wife and shacks up with somebody out of wedlock. — Interview, November 1976 Playboy. ___ This inauguration ceremony marks a new beginning, a new dedication within our Government, and a new spirit among us all. A President may sense and proclaim that new spirit, but only a people can provide it. — Inaugural address, January 1977. ___ It’s clear that the true problems of our nation are much deeper — deeper than gasoline lines or energy shortages, deeper even than inflation and recession. ... All the legislation in the world can’t fix what’s wrong with America. ... It is a crisis of confidence. — So-called “malaise” speech, July 1979. ___ But we know that democracy is always an unfinished creation. Each generation must renew its foundations. Each generation must rediscover the meaning of this hallowed vision in the light of its own modern challenges. For this generation, ours, life is nuclear survival; liberty is human rights; the pursuit of happiness is a planet whose resources are devoted to the physical and spiritual nourishment of its inhabitants. — Farewell Address, January 1981. ___ We appreciate the past. We are grateful for the present and we’re looking forward to the future with great anticipation and commitment. — October 1986, at the dedication of the Carter Presidential Library and Museum. ___ War may sometimes be a necessary evil. But no matter how necessary, it is always an evil, never a good. We will not learn to live together in peace by killing each other’s children. — December 2002, Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech. ___ Fundamentalists have become increasingly influential in both religion and government, and have managed to change the nuances and subtleties of historic debate into black-and-white rigidities and the personal derogation of those who dare to disagree. ... The influence of these various trends poses a threat to many of our nation’s historic customs and moral commitments, both in government and in houses of worship. — From 2005 book “Our Endangered Values.” ___ I think that this breakthrough by Barack Obama has been remarkable. When he made his speech (on race) a few months ago in Philadelphia, I wept. I sat in front of the television and cried, because I saw that as the most enlightening and transforming analysis of racism and a potential end of it that I ever saw in my life. — August 2008, commenting on then-Sen. Barack Obama’s candidacy. ___ I think it’s based on racism. There is an inherent feeling among many in this country that an African-American should not be president. ... No matter who he is or how much we disagree with his policies, the president should be treated with respect. — September 2009, reacting to Rep. Joe Wilson’s shout of “You lie!” during a speech to Congress by President Barack Obama. ___ I’m still determined to outlive the last guinea worm. — 2010, on The Carter Center’s work to eradicate guinea worm disease. ___ You know how much I raised to run against Gerald Ford? Zero. You know how much I raised to run against Ronald Reagan? Zero. You know how much will be raised this year by all presidential, Senate and House campaigns? $6 billion. That’s 6,000 millions. — September 2012, reacting to the 2010 “Citizens United” U.S. Supreme Court decision permitting unlimited third-party political spending. ___ I have become convinced that the most serious and unaddressed worldwide challenge is the deprivation and abuse of women and girls, largely caused by a false interpretation of carefully selected religious texts and a growing tolerance of violence and warfare, unfortunately following the example set during my lifetime by the United States. — From 2014 book “A Call to Action.” ___ I don’t think there’s any doubt now that the NSA or other agencies monitor or record almost every telephone call made in the United States, including cellphones, and I presume email as well. We’ve gone a long way down the road of violating Americans’ basic civil rights, as far as privacy is concerned. — March 2014, commenting on U.S. intelligence monitoring after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks ___ We accept self-congratulations about the wonderful 50th anniversary – which is wonderful – but we feel like Lyndon Johnson did it and we don’t have to do anything anymore. — April 2014, commenting on racial inequality during a celebration of the Civil Rights Act’s 40th anniversary. ___ I had a very challenging question at Emory (University) the other night: “How would you describe the United States of America today in one word?” And I didn’t know what to say for a few moments, but I finally said, “Searching.” I think the country in which we live is still searching for what it ought to be, and what it can be, and I’m not sure we’re making much progress right at this moment. — October 2014 during a celebration of his 90th birthday. ___ The life we have now is the best of all. We have an expanding and harmonious family, a rich life in our church and the Plains community, and a diversity of projects at The Carter Center that is adventurous and exciting. Rosalynn and I have visited more than 145 countries, and both of us are as active as we have ever been. We are blessed with good health and look to the future with eagerness and confidence, but are prepared for inevitable adversity when it comes. — From 2015 book, “A Full Life.” More articles from the BDN

Sandfire Resources America Inc. (OTCMKTS:SRAFF) Sees Large Decline in Short InterestThis year, Kim Stark’s kids took responsibility for decorating the family Christmas tree. Ornaments include toy cars, puzzle pieces, string and a pair of binoculars — things her three young daughters had handy after the family lost their home in summer’s devastating Jasper wildfire. “I have the most wonderful tree on the planet,” said Stark. “It’s part of our story and part of who we are. Stark is part of the fabric of the Jasper townsite, a 10-year member of the fire department and owner of a coffee shop and bakery. Her family, plus three furry pets and a fish, are living in a condo as they navigate rebuilding their home. “(The kids) miss our house, and we talk about our house,” said Stark. “We make sure we go to our neighbourhood, so that it doesn’t become somebody else’s neighbourhood.” Stark and other residents are anxious and nervous for the future following the fire that hit the town July 24. About 5,000 residents and 20,000 visitors were safely evacuated before the fire breached the western edge of town and destroyed 350 homes and businesses, including 820 housings units. The Insurance Bureau of Canada pegged the damage at $880 million. Six months after the fire, debris is still being cleared — lot by lot. Locals including Stark are quick to say things could have been worse. But anxiety over temporary living situations and what may be a long and slow rebuild process has many residents and municipal leaders feeling unsettled heading into 2025. For Sabrina Charlebois and David Leoni, the top concern is the Alberta government’s $112-million modular housing project. It’s to put up 250 pre-built rental units in the town and rent them to those displaced by the fire. Social Services Minister Jason Nixon said the first homes should be ready by late January or early February, with the rest in April. The majority are to be multi-bedroom suites to accommodate families. “If we can get all of our approvals on time, we definitely are on time to be able to build in the context of what we promised,” Nixon said. It’s complicated, he added, given there are layers of government with an Alberta town in a national park. Charlebois was born and raised in Jasper. The fire destroyed her childhood home, which her late father built, as well as the salon where she worked. “It’s better than nothing,” she said of the housing project, noting at least 2,000 residents were displaced so demand could outnumber the new units. Charlebois, who has been staying in a hotel, said it’s understandable projects like this take time. But “we’re six months into this, and there’s no homes for anyone.” “My fear is not finding a place to live, because I have to be out of my hotel by the spring,” she said. Leoni, a dentist and former Olympic biathlete, and his family also lost their home, as did seven staff at his clinic. He said the April cutoff date Charlebois is facing also applies to his staff staying in hotels. “Hopefully that’s concurrent with the provincial government’s opening of these modular units that they’re putting in, because we’re going to lose staff,” said Leoni. “Without them I can’t do anything.” The clinic needed to replace $160,000 worth of equipment and required a top-to-bottom scrub before appointments resumed in October. Leoni estimates his patient list is down one-third because of the fire. Whether those patients return remains to be seen. Charlebois and Leoni both said their anxiety is heightened when they consider the unpredictable nature of the town’s tourism economy and how it could complicate the pace of rebuilding. It’s a catch-22: residents need houses in order to rebuild and restart the economy, but they can’t restart the economy without tourists. And tourists require services, which require workers, who require housing. Bill Given, the town’s chief administrator, said he’s optimistic the municipality can “thread the needle.” But he has his own anxieties when it comes to rebuilding, namely the complexity of Jasper operating under both federal and provincial oversight. “An associated risk of that is that individual agendas from different orders of government overtake the public interest in delivering on what Jasper needs,” Given said. “I think there’s also a risk, maybe somewhat smaller, that private interests overtake the broader public interest.” Jasper Mayor Richard Ireland, who lost his home in the fire, said they have to find a way. “Failure is not an option for anybody,” said Ireland. “We have one chance to get this right, and that’s what we have to do.” In the meantime, Stark and her daughters watch from behind a fence as what’s left of their home is cleared away. “I’m super excited just to have a hole instead of a burnt spiral staircase that was coming up in my backyard. “Now,” she said, “it’s just this beautiful dirt. “There’s future there.”

DONALD Trump will find a space in his administration for "kindred spirit" Matt Gaetz, but his relationship with Elon Musk is the "million dollar question," a geopolitical expert has said. As Trump 's second-term cabinet begins to take shape, an expert has revealed what we can expect that team to look like. Last week, Gaetz , who has been accused of sleeping with a 17-year-old girl and paying her to attend sex parties, stepped down as Trump's pick for attorney general. The former Florida representative denies any wrongdoing but said he had become a distraction to the president-elect's team. But despite his replacement by Pam Bondi, a former Florida attorney general, Randall Schmollinger, a geopolitics expert from Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs in New York, has said he believes Trump will find a role for Gaetz. "Matt Gaetz has been an ardent Trump supporter from the very start," he told The U.S. Sun . READ MORE ON POLITICS "He's been a standard bearer for the MAGA movement, and I think he's unlikely to go away." Schmollinger added that he believes Trump will grant Gaetz "some role in that administration, whether in an official capacity, or whether he'll just be someone the president can call upon when he needs advice." Gaetz's return to politics is complicated by the fact that he resigned his seat in the House of Representatives. But Schmollinger explained that Trump will likely call upon Gaetz's ability to "drive people's attention," a characteristic he shares with the Republican. Most read in The US Sun "They are kindred spirits in that way," he added. A QUESTION MARK AROUND ELON MUSK Increasing attention has been paid to Trump's relationship with X and Tesla boss Elon Musk , who has been one of the president-elect's top backers. Billionaire Musk has been tasked with heading up Trump's new Department of Government Efficiency (also known as DOGE - in reference to the Musk-backed cryptocurrency Dogecoin). In a statement shortly after his election victory earlier in November, Trump said Musk and former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy would "dismantle government bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure federal agencies." What influence this will give Musk within the Trump administration still remains to be seen, but Schmollinger believes that relationship will be a defining part of his second term. "That is the one-million-dollar question," he said. In the days following his dominant Election Day victory, President-elect Donald Trump has begun carving out his future administation. Here's a list of Trump's confirmed cabinet picks: Susie Wiles - White House Chief of Staff Dr. Mehmet Oz - Administrator for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Stephen Miller - Deputy Chief of Staff Bill McGinley - White House counsel Tom Homan - "Border Czar" Elise Stefanik - Ambassador to the United Nations Lee Zeldin - Environmental Protection Agency administrator Marco Rubio - Secretary of State Kristi Noem - Homeland Security Secretary Mike Huckabee - Ambassador to Israel John Ratcliffe - CIA director Pete Hegseth - Secretary of Defense Mike Waltz - National Security Advisor Steven Witkoff - Middle East envoy Elon Musk & Vivek Ramaswamy - Department of Government Efficiency Tim Scott - Chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee Tulsi Gabbard - Director of National Intelligence Matt Gaetz - nominated for Attorney General but later refused the position Pam Bondi - nominated for Attorney general just hours after Gaetz's withdrawal Robert F. Kennedy Jr. , Secretary of Health and Human Services Jay Clayton - US Attorney for the Southern District of New York Doug Burgum - Department of Interior Todd Blanche - Deputy Attorney General Karoline Leavitt - White House Press Secretary Chris Wright - Energy Secretary Doug Collins - Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs William McGinley - White House Counsel Steven Cheung - White House Communications Director William Owen Scharf - Assistant to the President and White House Staff Secretary Dean John Sauer - Solicitor General of the US Commissioner Brendan Carr - Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission. Linda McMahon: Education Secretary Matthew Whitaker - NATO ambassador Scott Bessent - Treasury Secretary Keith Kellogg - Special envoy to Russia, Ukraine "Obviously, a lot can happen in the next four years, and they are both big personalities, but I think what we've seen from both of them and what they both recognize in one another, is a certain X-factor, a certain tendency to surprise and to think outside the box about what is going to happen and where they see things going. "Musk has a very well-defined vision in his mind of where he sees American humanity going in the future, and I think Trump is very much the opposite," he said. "He picks a direction and goes that way without much clarity about where it is he's going, so they actually complement each other." Schmollinger added that Musk could bring a "clarifying vision" to Trump's more instinctive style of governance. But that prediction came with a warning. "Both Musk and Trump are going to do whatever they think is best for themselves," he said. "I worry that Musk getting too close to the regulatory environment does give him too much control over the business landscape." Still, Schmollinger pointed to Musk's leadership in the growth of electric vehicles, as well as his takeover of Twitter, as signs that he can use his influence to shape the political agenda under Trump. Musk told a Trump rally in October that he believes the US government budget can be slashed from its current $6.5 trillion by "at least" $2 trillion. He has also called for some 75% of government employees to be made redundant. However, Schmollinger added that he believes the 75% figure is potentially an exaggeration. He said that both Musk and Trump have a tendency to make bold, over-ambitious claims as part of a "public-facing persona," but to be more open to compromise behind the scenes. That being said, Schmollinger added that a drastic act from Musk's DOGE agency should not be ruled out. "We've seen him do that with Twitter before where he got in there and cut 75% of the workforce and still had a functional app," he said. Read More on The US Sun "But Musk doesn't know what it is to have a government agency and what it is to work within Washington. "I don't think that he is going to cut 75% of the government overnight."The Latest: Police believe gunman who killed UnitedHealthcare CEO has left New York City

Stallone's Salary Surge Reflects Success With the confirmation of Seasons 3 and 4, Sylvester Stallone is also set to receive a pay increase, which would mark his third salary bump since the series' inception. According to reports, Stallone earned $750,000 per episode for Season 1, and $1.5 million per episode for Season 2. Given the significant rise in viewership for Tulsa King, with Season 2 drawing an average of 10 million global households—an 8% increase over Season 1—Stallone’s value to the show has been clear, as mentioned in a report by Movieweb. The show’s success has positioned him as a major draw for the Paramount+ platform. Season 2’s Marketing Strategy Pays Off Paramount's strategic decision to take Tulsa King from a streaming-only series to a broader audience via linear cable TV significantly contributed to the surge in viewership. Earlier this year, all nine episodes of Season 2 were aired on CBS, bringing in new viewers who might not have subscribed to Paramount+ otherwise. This move helped to further elevate the series and boost its subscription numbers, making it one of the standout crime dramas in recent memory. While it remains to be seen if this approach will continue for Season 3, it has undoubtedly proven successful thus far. Work on Season 3 Already Underway In an Instagram post following the intense Season 2 finale, Sylvester Stallone took the opportunity to thank fans for their continued support.
