Two of the league’s young quarterbacks looking to prove themselves meet Sunday afternoon in Foxborough as Anthony Richardson and the Colts (5-7) take on Drake Maye and the Patriots (3-9). The 2nd-year pro out of Florida, Richardson was benched earlier this season for a couple games before returning in impressive fashion completing 20 of 30 passes, throwing for 272 yards, and most importantly, leading the Colts to a 28-27 win over the Jets. However, Richardson was less than good last weekend against the Lions completing just 11 of 28 passes for 172 yards in a 24-6 loss to Detroit. Like Richardson in Indy, Drake Maye has had his ups and downs this season. The rookie out of North Carolina was also good two weeks ago in a 28-22 loss to the Rams completing 75% of his passes and throwing for 282 yards. However, the rookie out of North Carolina struggled last weekend. Like Richardson, accuracy has been a recurring issue for the young signal-caller. He completed just 22 of 37 passes at Miami in a loss to the Dolphins. Both Indianapolis and New England have much invested in these two young quarterbacks. It will be interesting to see if either show progress this weekend in the Northeast. Magic and lights draw crowds to an alpine village in Washington state for Christmas LEAVENWORTH, Wash. (AP Photo/Jenny Kane) LEAVENWORTH, Wash. (AP) — The scent of bratwurst and pretzels filled the air as horses clopped down the main street, hauling a carriage full of tourists. Nestled in her mother's arms, a baby reached out to touch a shop window display, peering toward the sequin-covered reindeer behind it, as colorful ornaments twirled nearby. Welcome to Leavenworth, Washington, the Christmas capital of the Pacific Northwest. Decades ago, Leavenworth was a near ghost town on the eastern slopes of the Cascade Mountains, one of the region's poorest communities. The mines and the sawmill had closed, and even the railroad left. In the 1960s, desperate business owners made a serious gamble. Without any state or federal help, they began taking out loans and remodeling the downtown in the style of a Bavarian village. More than half a century later, the result brings tourists from near and far all year long — hikers and skiers, river rafters and fly-fishers, shoppers and day-trippers from Seattle, some 3 million visitors in all last year, according to Matt Cade, president of the Greater Leavenworth Museum. The crush has prompted concerns about the cost of living, and recent efforts, including some state funding for affordable apartments, have focused on ensuring that tourism industry workers can live in town. But the town peaks in popularity during the holidays. In December, it takes on the ruddy, warm glow of a German Christmas market, with the magic of choirs, carolers, food vendors and a gingerbread house contest. The longstanding practice of switching on the Christmas lights downtown on Saturday and Sunday evenings began to draw such large crowds that organizers eventually decided to just leave them on from Thanksgiving through February. “Every time I go there, I just feel joy and excitement,” said Alison Epsom, of Sultan, who visited with her husband, Brian Jolly, and their 8-month-old daughter, Acacia. The couple met nearly two decades ago, when they were performing at an international dance festival. For one of their first dates, Jolly invited Epsom, a native of England, to visit Leavenworth. “I knew I had one opportunity that she was going to be here and I wanted her to fall in love with me,” he recalled. As they drove through the mountain pass on their way, she told him to pull over. She jumped outside without a coat and made a little snowman. “I had never seen that much snow," Epsom said. "So that was absolutely magical to me.” They have made it an annual tradition to return to Leavenworth, and every year they pick out a new ornament for their tree at the Kris Kringl shop downtown. The town is a core part of the couple's love story. Jolly even proposed to her on a horse-drawn sleigh. This year, it was their daughter's turn to pick out the new ornament — her parents decided they'd buy the first one she touched. She grabbed at a white owl, which now hangs from the family's Christmas tree, near the red- and gold-glittered star that Epsom picked out on their first visit. In 2024, the first full year the district has been supported by the San Rafael Chamber of Commerce, the nonprofit introduced new events and expanded its budget, which is continuing to grow. “With roughly $60,000 in our operating budget, I strive to produce events and promotions that either raise money or pay for themselves to make sure we have a robust calendar of activity in our downtown,” Sarah Tipple, director of the district, said at a presentation to the City Council on Dec. 16. The district, which produces the May Madness hot-rod car show, the Hops and Vine Stroll, the Holiday of Lights and Winter Wonderland and more, added new programs such as the Chinese New Year dragon hunt, Pride Month window paintings, Juneteenth activities and a Dancing Under the Lights event, which is an evolution of the previous Dining Under the Lights program. Tipple said programs are designed to add vibrancy, art and community. “I’m hoping that these first annuals become staples in our downtown schedule of promotions for years to come,” Tipple said. At the meeting, the City Council voted unanimously to support the district’s recommendation to renew annual assessments it collects from businesses on the the Fourth Street corridor from Lincoln Avenue to the West End neighborhood. The assessments range from $25 for a personal service practitioner, like a salon in the West End, up to $425 for a financial institution on the main drag. For 2024, the city has collected $63,525 in assessment revenue, lower than the pre-pandemic average of $83,000, indicating that some payments are delinquent or unpaid, or there are empty storefronts. In 2023, the pandemic-strained business improvement district was thrown a lifeline because it faced a potential third year of revenue losses. The City Council voted unanimously to approve a two-year contract with the Chamber of Commerce to help re-energize the district. This year, district events netted about a $22,000 profit for the district. After expenses, the district is expected to close the year with a total profit of more than $2,000. Next year, the district’s total revenues are projected to increase about $23,000 to more than $135,000. The events and marketing budget is expected to jump about $10,000 to more than $62,000, and the operating budget is expected to increase about $5,000 to more than $71,000, according to a financial report presented to the city. Tipple said the addition of a part-time social media marketing manager last year continues to drive new online traffic to the district, its events and businesses. She said participatory events such as scavenger hunts encourage shoppers to go into stores. For the next year, the district is working on several initiatives to spruce up the downtown, including a public art plan with the Downtown San Rafael Arts District and city staff; a mulching project on landscaped areas; and power washing, graffiti removal and storefront improvements. The 2025 plan also includes a concerted effort to fill vacancies and put art on vacant storefronts. Other targets for the year include growing the Thursday night summer farmers market and supporting cultural diversity through celebrations for Lunar New Year, Pride Month and Dia de los Muertos. Karen Strolia, chief executive officer of the San Rafael Chamber of Commerce, thanked the city for its support and credited the success of the partnership and the planned growth to Tipple’s leadership. “Sarah is a force to be reckoned with: She has a vision for this community, she’s extremely passionate, she shows up, blood, sweat and tears with high energy, to make sure our downtown district is well and happy and healthy and thriving,” Strolia said. Councilmember Eli Hill said he continues to be impressed with how much the business improvement district accomplishes each year on a shoestring budget. “I am thrilled that the the BID continues to evolve,” Hill said. “This is a hard job, and it’s gone up and down with the coming back from the pandemic and business changes,” said Councilmember Rachel Kertz. “And you’ve been able to really bring together all of Fourth Street.” Mayor Kate Colin applauded Tipple and Strolia for adjusting to the new partnership. “Congratulations to both of you for making that work over the past year, it’s a great model,” Colin said. “And you’ll continue to grow and build on it in the year to come, so thank you for an incredible year.”Michael Penix Jr.’s success shouldn’t save Terry Fontenot’s job
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos' usually stout defense has been rocked ever since losing second-year cornerback Riley Moss to an MCL injury against Las Vegas in Week 12. Without Moss there to capitalize on opponents shying away from star cornerback Patrick Surtain II, the Broncos (9-6) have had to largely abandon their preferred man coverage in favor of zone strategies and the results haven't been pretty. They allowed 32 points to the Cleveland Browns when former teammate Jerry Jeudy caught nine passes for a career-best 235 yards, including a 70-yard touchdown. Only Jonathan Taylor's fumble at the goal line as he was about to score a 41-yard touchdown and give Indianapolis a 20-3 lead saved the Broncos in Week 15 and allowed Denver to seize momentum and get the victory. They couldn't stop Justin Herbert , who led the Los Angeles Chargers back from a double-digit third-quarter deficit for a 34-27 win last week that prevented the Broncos from ending their eight-year playoff drought. It also put more pressure on the Broncos to win Saturday at Cincinnati, where the Bengals (7-8) cling to hopes of catching the Broncos and deny Denver a wild-card berth. Moss has enjoyed a breakout season in Denver with 71 tackles, eight pass breakups and an interception in 12 starts. He played in 14 games as a rotation player his rookie season after recovering from core muscle surgery that relegated him to special teams and spot duty in 2023. “We were and have been super excited" about the third-round pick out of Iowa, coach Sean Payton said. "Obviously, the guy that plays opposite of Patrick is going to get a lot of business. All throughout training camp, he really rose to the occasion, battled, competed and throughout really a good portion of the season. “He’s a big reason why we were playing so well defensively,” Payton added. "The sooner the better when we can get him back in the lineup. Hopefully it can happen this weekend.” In Moss' dozen starts, the Broncos allowed 16.8 points per game. Without him, they've been allowing 26.3 points a game. Joe Burrow and Ja'Marr Chase pose a bigger challenge to the Broncos than Jeudy and Jameis Wiston did for Cleveland or Herbert and Ladd McConkey did for the Chargers. Moss returned to practice last week and the Broncos will determine this week whether he's ready to return to the field or if it's better to keep him out until their season finale against Kansas City. The medial collateral ligament is on the inside of the knee that connects the thigh bone to the shin bone. It’s one of four major ligaments that stabilize the knee and allow it to rotate. It typically takes a month to recover from an MCL sprain and the Broncos had their bye week earlier this month, meaning Moss might only have to miss three games. If the Broncos reach the playoffs for the first time since winning Super Bowl 50 in Hall of Famer Peyton Manning's last start, they'll likely need to have a healthy Moss opposite Surtain to have any realistic hopes of avoiding a one-and-done appearance. The Broncos got a scare when Surtain injured an ankle against Indianapolis two weeks ago and limped off the field in the closing minutes. However, he was a full-go at practice last week and had no issues against the Chargers. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl

APP/ ahrMoncton council discussed whether to spend millions of dollars more on protective services as the city's 2025 budget meetings continued on Wednesday. The city's protective services department includes bylaw enforcement, fire department and the RCMP contract. "We talked a lot yesterday about growth in the municipality, and with growth obviously comes demand for service," Jeff Preston, the department's general manager, told council Wednesday. "And we're also dealing with, as we all know, a lot of social issues, which also is contributing to ... demand for service." A $9.5-million increase for policing is one of the largest spending hikes in the city's proposed $223.8-million operating budget. Major spending hike for Codiac RCMP proposed, adding 17 officers Moncton proposing to cut tax rate by 6.2 cents for most of city That increase includes money to add 17 more police officers in Moncton, Dieppe and Riverview. It would increase the budgeted number of officers from 156 this year to 173. The 17 Mounties are part of a three-year plan by the Codiac Regional Policing Authority , the civilian board overseeing Codiac RCMP, to add 46 officers. The budget also earmarks funds to hire five municipal employees in supporting roles for Codiac. Councillors questioned how the added staff would affect crime rates, police visibility and traffic enforcement. Supt. Benoit Jolette, the commanding officer of Codiac Regional RCMP, says the added staff will help them follow up on criminal cases. (Shane Magee/CBC) RCMP Supt. Benoit Jolette, Codiac's commanding officer, said it would help address crime against people and property and would help solve cases. "We're really good at getting to the calls really quickly and placing people in custody, laying charges," Jolette said. "But where we're struggling is that follow-up, doing all those neighbourhood inquiries, checking for video and all that, increasing our solvability rate." He said freeing up patrol officers from longer-term tasks would allow them to do other work in the community. "By the middle to the end of 2025 ... I foresee a dramatic increase in the amount of traffic tickets that we're going to be issuing because the members are going to have more time," Jolette said. Proposed Moncton budget includes more money for police, fire, aims to reduce hit to taxpayers Several councillors said they hope the province and health authorities increase spending on addictions and mental health services, including increasing the operating hours for a mobile mental health crisis unit, to address social issues that factor into crime. "I can accept this year that we require extra officers so that we can take some pressure too off the existing officers," Coun. Charles Leger said, adding he hopes there's a future discussion about other ways to address crime. The budget discussion Wednesday also included the city's fire department. The spending plan includes hiring four more firefighters and increasing the minimum number on duty from 21 to 22. Several councillors said they hoped to see the province spend more on addictions treatment and mental health care. (Shane Magee/CBC) Fire Chief Conrad Landry said the increase will mean a second firefighter on a rescue truck when responding to medical calls. A fire department master plan is under development that will look at how many staff the city needs, how many fire stations and how much equipment, as well as other aspects of its operation. "It's going to be quite comprehensive," Landry said. That report is expected to be completed in the first few months of 2025. However, no money to implement possible recommendations has been included in the budget, staff told council. Councillors are expected to vote Thursday on whether to approve the budget.

(AP) — Luis Suarez is going to play alongside Lionel Messi for at least one more year. Suarez and Inter Miami have agreed on a one-year contract extension for the coming season, the team announced Wednesday. The financial terms weren’t disclosed. Suarez made $1.5 million this year in his first Inter Miami season, one in which the Uruguayan striker scored 20 goals — tied with Messi for the team lead — in Major League Soccer regular season play and a team-best 25 goals across all competitions. “I’m very happy, very excited to continue for another year and to be able to enjoy being here with this fanbase, which for us is like family,” Suarez said in comments distributed by the team. “We feel very, very connected with them, and hopefully, next year, we can bring them even more joy.” Inter Miami set MLS records for points (74) and winning percentage (.765) during this MLS regular season, one in which the club went 22-4-8 and captured the Supporters Shield. The club failed to get out of the first round of the playoffs, falling to Atlanta United in the best-of-three series. The contract extension for Suarez, who turns 38 in January, keeps the Inter Miami core of stars with Barcelona ties together. Suarez plays at Inter Miami alongside Messi, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, a group that teamed up with the powerhouse Spanish club in past years. And newly named Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano — his hiring was made official on Tuesday — also played with that foursome at Barcelona.
