What's New Poland has introduced mandatory firearms training for schoolchildren amid concerns over potential Russian aggression. The new training will see children aged between 14 and 16 years old train with guns for up to an hour a week as the war in Ukraine continues to impact Poland's borders with both Ukraine and Russia . Newsweek contacted the Polish Ministry of National Education for comment via email. Why It Matters Poland is a member of NATO that borders both Ukraine and Russia, making it an important nation in relations between Moscow and the West. It has a complicated relationship with the Kremlin, especially following the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Poland takes the potential threat of Russian military activity very seriously, and has taken several steps to secure its airspace and borders as the war continues. The new education policy is the latest in a series of plans to prepare the population for military threats. What To Know The "Education for Safety" program will create one-hour weekly lessons conducted in school gymnasiums. The training will involve laser-based technology to ensure safety, with no live ammunition being used. The curriculum encompasses firearms handling, state security education, survival skills, tactical rescue, first aid, and cybersecurity. Students will also be taught how to assemble and disassemble weapons. The program is set to be rolled out across all 18,000 schools nationwide in Poland. Managed by the nation's Department of National Education, the program is designed to teach students how to deal "with threats caused by warfare and the basics of tactical rescue." Other areas students will receive training in are mass accidents and disaster response, along with basic first aid and health education. What People Are Saying The Polish Department of National Education said in a statement: "For primary schools, requirements include knowledge of the local area, cybersecurity in the military dimension, preparation for shooting training; and for secondary schools, children must know how to respond to a threat of warfare, cybersecurity in the military dimension, and participate in shooting training." In a statement to Euronews , the Polish minister for education said: "In primary schools, the requirements include theoretical preparation on the safe handling of weapons. "In secondary schools, basic shooting training with a practical component will be conducted using safe tools for shooting exercises, such as firearms, pneumatic weapons, replicas of firearms, or virtual/laser shooting ranges." What Happens Next The war in Ukraine continues, with no sign of the conflict de-escalating. Many NATO countries will continue to grapple with the ramifications of supporting Ukraine in the conflict , something which Russia has condemned as direct intervention. Ventas Inc. stock remains steady Thursday, still outperforms marketCLEVELAND — Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is no longer expected to play Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns. Tagovailoa was downgraded to doubtful Saturday as the Dolphins (7-8) traveled to Cleveland as he deals with his hip injury. Tagovailoa was already deemed questionable for Sunday’s 4:05 p.m. kickoff on Miami’s Friday injury report, but his hip injury was not largely considered concerning after he was also on the injury report for it last week and made it through the win over the San Francisco 49ers. He downplayed the significance of the ailing hip, which he first banged up in the Dec. 15 loss to the Texans in Houston, when he spoke to reporters Wednesday. “It’s good,” Tagovailoa said then. “It’s just like anyone else on the team and anyone else around the league. You get banged up little bit towards the ending of the year so just got to take care of that.” Tagovailoa also famously had his college career at Alabama cut short due to a hip injury. He recovered from it during his draft process in 2020, the Dolphins selected him with the No. 5 pick. Without Tagovailoa, the Dolphins likely start backup quarterback Tyler “Snoop” Huntley against the Browns. Third-stringer Skylar Thompson was elevated from the practice squad to the active roster Saturday ahead of Sunday’s game. The Dolphins, on Saturday, also placed cornerback Kendall Fuller on injured reserve. He was already ruled out for Sunday’s game with his knee injury and considered week to week with just two weeks remaining in the regular season. With the roster spot, Miami signed wide receiver Erik Ezukanma from the practice squad to the active roster, as Tyreek Hill (wrist) and Jaylen Waddle (knee) are questionable for Sunday. Along with Thompson, the Dolphins elevated cornerback Nik Needham from the practice squad for depth at cornerback with Fuller out and Storm Duck likely to play in nickel packages. Tagovailoa, this season, is vying for Drew Brees’ single-season completion percentage record. With Miami set to go with Huntley and the Browns in line to start Dorian Thompson-Robinson, the NFL is fortunate to have flexed out of airing Sunday’s Dolphins-Browns game out of prime time on the penultimate week of the regular season. Barrett to Bucs Unretired NFL edge rusher Shaquil Barrett is returning to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After Barrett, whom the Dolphins waived from the reserve/retired list Thursday, cleared waivers Friday, he agreed to sign with the Buccaneers, according to multiple reports. Barrett signed with the Dolphins as a free agent in March, retired in July before training camp and wished to come out of retirement in late November. Miami, caught off guard by the request on a short week before playing the Green Bay Packers on Thanksgiving night, did not activate him before its deadline, nor did the team immediately release him so he could join another team. The Dolphins reversed course on that decision this past week, with coach Mike McDaniel citing the organization did not believe waiving him would create a competitive disadvantage at this point. The Bucs (8-7) are tied with the Atlanta Falcons atop the NFC South, with the Falcons holding the tiebreaker. Tampa Bay can still win the division with two weeks remaining. Barrett never played a down for the Dolphins. He had 45 sacks, made two Pro Bowls and won a Super Bowl in his previous five seasons with the Bucs. ©2024 South Florida Sun-Sentinel. How to Watch Top 25 Women’s College Basketball Games – Friday, November 22MOSCOW (AP) – Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday apologized to his Azerbaijani counterpart for what he called a “tragic incident” following the crash of an Azerbaijani airliner in Kazakhstan that killed 38 people. The Kremlin said in a statement that air defense systems were firing near Grozny, the regional capital of the Russian republic of Chechnya, due to a Ukrainian drone strike as the plane attempted to land on Wednesday. It stopped short of saying the plane was shot down by Russian air defenses. According to a Kremlin readout of the call, Putin apologized to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev “for the fact that the tragic incident occurred in Russian airspace.” The plane was flying from Azerbaijan’s capital of Baku to Grozny, when it turned toward Kazakhstan and crashed while making an attempt to land. There were 29 survivors. On Friday, a U.S. official and an Azerbaijani minister made separate statements blaming the crash on an external weapon. Friday’s assessments by Rashan Nabiyev and White House national security spokesman John Kirby echoed those made by outside aviation experts who blamed the crash on Russian air defense systems responding to a Ukrainian attack. Neither Kirby or the Azerbaijani minister directly addressed the statements blaming air defenses. Kirby told reporters on Friday that the U.S. “have seen some early indications that would certainly point to the possibility that this jet was brought down by Russian air defense systems,” but refused to elaborate, citing an ongoing investigation. Nabiyev, Azerbaijan’s minister of digital development and transportation, told Azerbaijani media that “preliminary conclusions by experts point at external impact,” as does witness testimony. Passengers and crew who survived the crash told Azerbaijani media that they heard loud noises on the aircraft as it was circling over Grozny. Dmitry Yadrov, head of Russia ́s civil aviation authority Rosaviatsia, said Friday that as the plane was preparing to land in Grozny in deep fog, Ukrainian drones were targeting the city, prompting authorities to close the area to air traffic. Yadrov said that after the captain made two unsuccessful attempts to land, he was offered other airports but decided to fly to Aktau in Kazakhstan, across the Caspian Sea. He didn’t comment on statements from some aviation experts, who pointed out that holes seen in the plane’s tail section suggested that it could have come under fire from Russian air defense systems. Earlier this week, Rosaviatsia cited unspecified early evidence as showing that the pilots diverted to Aktau after a bird strike led to an emergency on board. In the days following the crash, Azerbaijan Airlines blamed “physical and technical interference” and announced the suspension of flights to several Russian airports. It didn’t say where the interference came from or provide any further details.Stock market today: Stocks drift higher as US markets reopen after a holiday pause

By Jeff Mason and Andrea Shalal WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Former U.S. President Barack Obama, who has mostly stayed quiet in the weeks since Vice President Kamala Harris' election loss, on Thursday urged a new generation of American leaders to talk with people they disagree with. In a speech at a "Democracy Forum" sponsored by his foundation, the former president said he was convinced that a renewed commitment to pluralist principles was essential to ensure the survival of democracy. "The alternative is what we've seen here in the United States and in many democracies around the globe - not just more gridlock, not just public cynicism, but an increased willingness on the part of politicians and their followers to violate democratic norms, to do anything they can to get their way." Obama discussed the "power of pluralism" with thousands of live and online attendees at a deeply divided time in U.S. history and an unsettling one for Democrats as Republican Donald Trump returns to the White House. Building lasting majorities that supported justice required "framing our issues, our causes, what we believe in, in terms of 'we' and not just 'us and them,'" he said. But that did not mean rolling over when opponents abused power, he said. "That's a problem. And when that happens, we fight for what we believe in." While Obama, 63, remains in high demand to campaign for his fellow Democrats, some in the party are calling for a crop of younger leaders to take the baton after Harris lost every battleground state and the popular vote and Democrats lost control of the House of Representatives and the Senate. "I think he'd be the first to agree," David Axelrod, former senior adviser to Obama, told Reuters. "I think he would say he's run his race and we need others to step up." "Time marches on, and I think that he would say ... we need a whole array of leaders, and there are young leaders in the Democratic Party who are dynamic and very much in touch with the times who can step up and play a big role." November's disappointing results for Democrats, including support eroding among working-class and Latino voters, sparked an angry blame game inside the party and an effort by some to push for fresh talent. "I've always been an advocate for a new generation of leadership in the party and I think that people are yearning for that," Representative Seth Moulton, a Democrat from Massachusetts, told Reuters. "It doesn't mean that the Obama magic is totally gone, but Obama's not going to be a future president. Obama's not running for Senate. We need to hear from newer voices that can better represent the fears and struggles that Americans face today." Obama and his wife Michelle campaigned around the country and remain enormously popular within the party base, wielding influence behind the scenes through fundraising and a deep network of allies and former staff. But despite fundraising success and resonant speeches, Obama was unable to help propel Harris to victory this year. Democratic nominee and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton also failed to win the presidency in 2016 despite his backing. Advisers from his one-time inner circle who joined Harris' campaign after President Joe Biden stepped aside are drawing fire for failing to admit any mistakes in how they handled the 2024 cycle. A day after the Nov. 5 election, the Obamas issued a statement congratulating Trump and saying "progress requires us to extend good faith and grace - even to people with whom we deeply disagree." Obama made history as the first Black president of the United States and racked up comfortable margins of victory over his Republican opponents when he ran: more than seven percentage points in 2008 and nearly four in 2012. But American politics has changed since then, some strategists say. "His two wins do seem that much more remarkable in retrospect, given how much of the coalition that Republicans have built around Trump has been around racial politics," said Jeff Timmer, chief operating officer of the Lincoln Project, a political consulting group of former Republicans opposed to Trump who worked to elect Harris and Biden before her. Obama campaigned heavily for Biden, who won in 2020, but his words on the campaign trail this year backfired at least once. At a stop in Pennsylvania, he seemed to lecture Black men over their reluctance to vote for a woman, drawing criticism from some Black activists. Down-ballot demand for the former president this year was high, though. Democratic congressional candidates such as Senator-elect Elissa Slotkin of Michigan, Senator Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin and Senator-elect Ruben Gallego of Arizona sought Obama's help, got it, and won. "Is this the ultimate turning the page on the Obama years? Maybe," said Michael Feldman, a communications consultant and former adviser to Al Gore, reflecting on the 2024 election. "Will he still be and will she (Mrs. Obama) still be the two most popular figures within the party for the foreseeable future? The answer is absolutely." If Americans, especially Conservatives, may have voted for Donald Trump in order to curb down foreign immigration, that's probably not happening anytime soon, as Vivek Ramaswamy , Trump's comrade-in-arms, has recently triggered a MAGA civil war over his latest tweet, where he has said that the reason US companies recruit foreign engineers instead of Americans is not because of an IQ deficit, but because of the basic 'culture'. However, reports suggest that Ramaswamy has opened up and addressed some his life's core issues in this post, something that he has faced in his tough teenage years. He was born to Indian immigrant parents in Cincinnati's suburban areas, and according to Ramaswamy himself, did not have much money growing up, even though his parents were both in standard avenue of services. In a recent podcast, he has said that his experience with public schools where he studied, had not been great, where being a focused academic and model student was not a rewarding choice, at least not among his peers. All his thoughts may have piled up in the recent post-Christmas tweet that he posted, that the Conservatives are spewing fire over. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Known across the globe as the stuck astronauts, Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams hit the six-month mark in space Thursday with two more to go. The pair rocketed into orbit on June 5, the first to ride Boeing’s new Starliner crew capsule on what was supposed to be a weeklong test flight. They arrived at the International Space Station the next day, only after overcoming a cascade of thruster failures and helium leaks . NASA deemed the capsule too risky for a return flight, so it will be February before their long and trying mission comes to a close. While NASA managers bristle at calling them stuck or stranded, the two retired Navy captains shrug off the description of their plight. They insist they’re fine and accepting of their fate. Wilmore views it as a detour of sorts: “We’re just on a different path.” “I like everything about being up here,” Williams told students Wednesday from an elementary school named for her in Needham, Massachusetts, her hometown. "Just living in space is super fun.” Both astronauts have lived up there before so they quickly became full-fledged members of the crew, helping with science experiments and chores like fixing a broken toilet, vacuuming the air vents and watering the plants. Williams took over as station commander in September. “Mindset does go a long way,” Wilmore said in response to a question from Nashville first-graders in October. He’s from Mount Juliet, Tennessee. “I don’t look at these situations in life as being downers.” Boeing flew its Starliner capsule home empty in September, and NASA moved Wilmore and Williams to a SpaceX flight not due back until late February. Two other astronauts were bumped to make room and to keep to a six-month schedule for crew rotations. Like other station crews, Wilmore and Williams trained for spacewalks and any unexpected situations that might arise. “When the crews go up, they know they could be there for up to a year,” said NASA Associate Administrator Jim Free. NASA astronaut Frank Rubio found that out the hard way when the Russian Space Agency had to rush up a replacement capsule for him and two cosmonauts in 2023, pushing their six-month mission to just past a year. Boeing said this week that input from Wilmore and Williams has been “invaluable" in the ongoing inquiry of what went wrong. The company said in a statement that it is preparing for Starliner's next flight but declined comment on when it might launch again. NASA also has high praise for the pair. “Whether it was luck or whether it was selection, they were great folks to have for this mission,” NASA's chief health and medical officer, Dr. JD Polk, said during an interview with The Associated Press. On top of everything else, Williams, 59, has had to deal with “rumors,” as she calls them, of serious weight loss. She insists her weight is the same as it was on launch day, which Polk confirms. During Wednesday's student chat, Williams said she didn't have much of an appetite when she first arrived in space. But now she's “super hungry” and eating three meals a day plus snacks, while logging the required two hours of daily exercise. Williams, a distance runner, uses the space station treadmill to support races in her home state. She competed in Cape Cod’s 7-mile Falmouth Road Race in August. She ran the 2007 Boston Marathon up there as well. She has a New England Patriots shirt with her for game days, as well as a Red Sox spring training shirt. “Hopefully I’ll be home before that happens -- but you never know,” she said in November. Husband Michael Williams, a retired federal marshal and former Navy aviator, is caring for their dogs back home in Houston. As for Wilmore, 61, he's missing his younger daughter's senior year in high school and his older daughter's theater productions in college. “We can’t deny that being unexpectedly separated, especially during the holidays when the entire family gets together, brings increased yearnings to share the time and events together,” his wife, Deanna Wilmore, told the AP in a text this week. Her husband “has it worse than us” since he's confined to the space station and can only connect via video for short periods. “We are certainly looking forward to February!!” she wrote.
