HALO Space, a Spanish startup, is bringing near-space tourism closer to reality with its Aurora capsule . Better yet, if flying to the edge of space sounds like your dream experience, you can join a waiting list. The stratospheric balloon system is designed to carry passengers 22 miles (35 kilometers) above the Earth’s surface, offering an experience different from rocket-based space tourism. HALO Space expanded its testing and assembly operations to Saudi Arabia last month, which is a significant step forward. The move aligns with Saudi Arabia’s aim to become a global leader in aerospace as part of the Vision 2030 initiative. The nation’s clear skies and ample airspace make it an ideal environment for testing, according to a report by Space Explored. Interesting Engineering (IE ) recently caught up with Carlos Mira (CEO) and Alberto Castrillo (CTO). We discussed the technology powering the Aurora space vehicle and HALO Space’s plans for near-space tourism. The Aurora capsule vs. SpaceX and Blue Origin “The Aurora capsule offers a unique and serene experience compared to other space travel providers like SpaceX and Blue Origin,” Mira and Castrillo told IE . They explained that, unlike companies that rely on powerful rocket propulsion , HALO Space uses helium balloons. These balloons gently lift the capsule into the stratosphere, and with that comes several “distinctive advantages.” A tranquil ascent “Instead of the high-G forces and intense speeds typical of rocket launches, the Aurora capsule rises gradually,” they said. This approach offers a peaceful journey with spectacular views of Earth’s curvature and space’s darkness. Mira and Castillo then highlighted the sustainability aspect of the stratospheric balloon system. ‘Reduced carbon footprint’ “The use of helium balloons dramatically reduces the carbon footprint compared to rocket-based launches, making it a greener alternative for space tourism,” they said. Accessibility Additionally, since it avoids the physical demands of high-speed rocket travel, the Aurora capsule is accessible to a broader range of passengers. Miro and Castillo explained that this includes those who might need to be physically fit for traditional space travel. The ‘overview effect’ They also mentioned that HALO Space enables passengers to enjoy what is known as the “ overview effect .” They said, “This is a transformative experience of viewing Earth from the edge of space—for a full hour.” They explained that this duration sets HALO apart from rocket-based space tourism, where passengers typically experience this view for a few brief minutes. “To date, fewer than 700 people have experienced this effect in space, but HALO aims to make it accessible to over 3,000 people each year,” they stated. What’s the tech making near-space balloon systems safe? IE prompted the duo to discuss the technology and safety measures to ensure a safe journey to the stratosphere. “Safety is a top priority for HALO Space, and the Aurora capsule incorporates state-of-the-art technology to ensure a safe journey,” they said. Some of the critical safety measures include multiple backup systems. They explain that the capsule is designed with redundant systems to ensure safety at all stages of the flight. “This includes redundant life support systems, communication systems, and safety mechanisms,” they said. They then highlighted balloon and descent control. Simply put, the ascent is powered by a massive helium balloon that gradually expands as it rises into the stratosphere . “In the event of any unexpected issue, the descent can be safely controlled through a combination of precision parachutes and proprietary landing technologies,” they explained. IE is then introduced to the advanced life support aboard the Aurora. According to Mira and Castrillo, the capsule is pressurized and climate-controlled. This ensures a comfortable environment for passengers while providing oxygen and maintaining optimal temperature and air pressure levels. Additionally, they highlight that the team at HALO Space has developed robust emergency protocols, and the flight is continuously monitored by a control team on the ground. The capsule also has an emergency parachute system that can be deployed if necessary during the descent. Aurora, beyond tourism “The Aurora capsule has significant potential beyond tourism,” Mira and Castrillo emphasized. “The ability to reach near-space offers numerous opportunities for scientific research and other industries.” Atmospheric and climate studies For example, they highlighted how the stratosphere is a prime location for monitoring Earth’s atmosphere and studying ozone depletion , pollution, and weather patterns. “The Aurora capsule can carry instruments to collect valuable data for climate scientists,” they said. Technology testing Additionally, the near-space environment offers conditions similar to those found in space. Such conditions include low temperatures, high radiation, and near-vacuum pressures. “Companies can use the Aurora capsule to test new space technologies in these conditions at a lower cost than launching satellites or rockets,” they said. Commercial applications Businesses in industries like telecommunications and remote sensing may also find near-space operations attractive for testing or deploying certain types of equipment. Balloons vs. rockets: what are the sustainability benefits of Aurora? “The Aurora capsule offers a much more environmentally friendly approach to space tourism compared to traditional rocket-based travel,” Mira and Castrillo stated. And here’s why. According to the duo, Aurora has zero emissions during ascent. Unlike rockets, which burn massive amounts of fuel and release large quantities of CO2 and other pollutants into the atmosphere, “The Aurora capsule’s ascent is powered by a helium balloon, which does not generate any harmful emissions,” they argued. They emphasized to IE that helium, an inert and non-toxic lifting agent, powers the capsule’s ascent with minimal environmental impact. “Especially when compared to the fuel-intensive methods used by companies like SpaceX or Blue Origin,” they said. They also claimed the Aurora capsule uses less energy overall compared to rocket-based flight. “The entire journey is less energy-intensive because it avoids the massive fuel consumption required for rocket launches,” they said. “This reduces the overall carbon footprint of each flight, making HALO Space the most sustainable option for near-space tourism.” How will near-space tourism evolve in the future? “Near-space tourism is on the verge of a significant transformation,” the duo said. “And HALO Space aims to play a pivotal role in making this frontier accessible to a broader audience.” They reasoned that unlike the current space tourism market , which remains exclusive and expensive, HALO Space envisions a future where near-space experiences are available to many more people. This will be due to the lower cost and lower barriers to entry compared to rocket-based options. “The gentle ascent and non-rocket-based approach open the door for more inclusive space travel,” they said. “[This includes] those who are older, less physically fit, or seeking a less intense experience than what traditional spaceflights offer.” ‘At the forefront of a new era in space exploration’ HALO Space will democratize near-space access by offering more frequent and affordable flights. They explained that it pioneers new uses for near-space technology in research and commercial applications while leading the way in sustainable space tourism with its non-fuel technology. “HALO Space is at the forefront of a new era in space exploration, where the dream of experiencing the overview effect is no longer limited to astronauts or the super-wealthy,” Mira and Castrillo added. They argued that by focusing on accessibility, sustainability, and safety, HALO Space opens the door to new possibilities for space tourism, scientific discovery, and commercial innovation. “Our goal is not just to take passengers on an unforgettable journey but to inspire a deeper connection to the planet and our place in the universe,” Mira and Castrillo concluded. “We believe that the Aurora capsule offers not just an adventure, but a transformative experience that will forever change how people see the world.”This report is from today's CNBC Daily Open, our international markets newsletter. STOCKHOLM/GDANSK, Nov 22 (Reuters) - Northvolt's financial collapse deals a blow to Europe's plan to set up its own battery industry to power electric cars, stirring a debate about whether it needs to do more to attract investment as startups struggle to catch up with Chinese rivals. Europe's biggest hope for an electric vehicle battery champion filed for U.S. Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Thursday after talks with investors and creditors including Volkswagen and Goldman Sachs for funding failed. The Swedish company, whose motto is "make oil history", has received more than $10 billion in equity, debt and public financing since its 2016 start-up. Volkswagen and Goldman Sachs each own about one fifth of its shares. Northvolt said on Friday it needed $1.0-$1.2 billion in new funds under the restructuring process, which it hopes will end by the end of March. In recent months, it has shrunk the business and cut jobs in a bid to shore up its finances. But it has struggled to produce sufficient volumes of high-quality batteries, and lost a 2 billion euro ($2.1 billion) contract from BMW (BMWG.DE) , opens new tab in June. That has left Europe's ambitions to build its own battery industry looking a distant dream. In recent years, Northvolt led a wave of European startups investing tens of billions of dollars to serve the continent's automakers as they switch from internal combustion engines to electric vehicles. But growth in EV demand is moving at a slower pace than many in the industry projected, and China has taken a huge lead in powering EVs, controlling 85% of global battery cell production, International Energy Agency data shows. Making batteries and cells, the units that store and convert chemical energy into electricity, is a delicate process and doing so at scale is a challenge for any battery maker. Northvolt has missed some in-house targets and curtailed production at its battery cells plant in northern Sweden, underscoring the difficulties, Reuters reported on Monday. "The biggest issue is that batteries are not easy to make and Northvolt haven’t satisfied the supply demands of their customers - that is a management issue," said Andy Palmer, founder of consultancy Palmer Automotive said. “The Chinese are technologically 10 years ahead of the West in batteries. That’s a fact," he said. At least eight companies have postponed or abandoned EV battery projects in Europe this year, including China's Svolt and joint venture ACC , led by Stellantis (STLAM.MI) , opens new tab and Mercedes-Benz (MBGn.DE) , opens new tab . In 2024, Europe's battery pipeline capacity out to 2030 has fallen by 176 gigawatt-hours, according to data firm Benchmark Minerals. That's equivalent to almost all the current installed capacity in Europe, according to Reuters calculations. Some executives say Europe should do more to attract and support home-grown projects so they can compete with Chinese rivals such as CATL (300750.SZ) , opens new tab and BYD (002594.SZ) , opens new tab . "Europe needs to rethink how it supports a nascent sector before China eats up the entire value chain, which is due to smart planning," said James Frith, European head of Volta Energy Technologies, which specialises in battery and energy storage technology. Among its $5.8 billion in debts, Northvolt owes the European Investment Bank (EIB) some $313 million. EIB vice president Thomas Östros said it had been a constructive partner to Northvolt, but it needed to safeguard the EIB and EU's interests. "It remains the case that Europe has a strategic interest in a European battery industry for electric cars and we will follow developments very closely. But it is much to early to say what the outcome will be," he said. The Swedish government has repeatedly said it does not plan to take a stake in Northvolt. On Friday, Northvolt's outgoing CEO and co-founder Peter Carlsson said he was a "little worried" Europe is giving up on its dream of competing with China. He said Europe would regret it in 20 years time if it retreated. "It's not a straight journey and right now, we're all in a bit of a down in that journey where there's more hesitations, there's more questions on the speed of the transition from the carmakers, from policymakers, from the investor community," he told reporters in a call. President-elect Donald Trump on Monday said his incoming administration would slap new tariffs on imported goods from Mexico, Canada and China, fulfilling a key campaign promise that could have a major impact on trade. Trump said in a post on Truth Social that he plans to seek to impose a 25% tariff on products imported from Mexico and Canada, framing the proposed plan as a response to the ongoing fentanyl crisis. Philadelphia news 24/7: Watch NBC10 free wherever you are "On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders," Trump wrote. "This Tariff will remain in effect until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country!" Trump said that he would also seek to impose additional tariffs on China. "I have had many talks with China about the massive amounts of drugs, in particular Fentanyl, being sent into the United States — But to no avail," Trump wrote. "Until such time as they stop, we will be charging China an additional 10% Tariff, above any additional Tariffs, on all of their many products coming into the United States of America." Embassies for Canada, China and Mexico did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Monday night. The U.S. and China held high-level talks this year about the fentanyl crisis in an effort to resume counternarcotics cooperation after President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in California last year. Biden also announced he would increase the tariff rate on various goods from China, saying in May that he would increase the tariffs on electric vehicles from 25% to 100% this year. Stories that affect your life across the U.S. and around the world. On the campaign trail, Trump declared he would impose 20% blanket tariff on all imports, and add tariffs of at least 60% to Chinese products. During a presidential debate with then-Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, who called Trump's tariffs a "sales tax on the American people," Trump cast the proposed tariffs as a kind of payback. “Other countries are going to finally, after 75 years, pay us back for all that we’ve done for the world, and the tariff will be substantial,” Trump said during the September debate. Any proposed tariffs are likely to receive some pushback from businesses and on Capitol Hill, as NBC News has previously reported . This story first appeared on NBCNews.com . More from NBC News:

Oppenheimer & Co. Inc. Reduces Stock Position in Core Laboratories Inc. (NYSE:CLB)GameStop Corp. Cl A stock outperforms competitors on strong trading dayAs part of a national “moonshot” to cure blindness, researchers at the CU Anschutz Medical Campus will receive as much as $46 million in federal funding over the next five years to pursue a first-of-its-kind full eye transplantation. “This is no easy undertaking, but I believe we can achieve this together,” said Dr. Kia Washington, the lead researcher for the University of Colorado-led team, during a press conference Monday. “And in fact I’ve never been more hopeful that a cure for blindness is within reach.” The CU team was one of four in the United States that received funding awards from the federal Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health , or ARPA-H. The CU-based group will focus on achieving the first-ever vision-restoring eye transplant by using “novel stem cell and bioelectronic technologies,” according to a news release announcing the funding. The work will be interdisciplinary, Washington and others said, and will link together researchers at institutions across the country. The four teams that received the funding will work alongside each other on distinct approaches, though officials said the teams would likely collaborate and eventually may merge depending on which research avenues show the most promise toward achieving the ultimate goal of transplanting an eye and curing blindness. Dr. Calvin Roberts, who will oversee the broader project for ARPA-H, said the agency wanted to take multiple “shots on goal” to ensure progress. “In the broader picture, achieving this would be probably the most monumental task in medicine within the last several decades,” said Dr. Daniel Pelaez of the University of Miami’s Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, which also received ARPA-H funding. Pelaez is the lead investigator for that team, which has pursued new procedures to successfully remove and preserve eyes from donors, amid other research. He told The Denver Post that only four organ systems have not been successfully transplanted: the inner ear, the brain, the spinal cord and the eye. All four are part of the central nervous system, which does not repair itself when damaged. If researchers can successfully transplant the human eye and restore vision to the patient, it might help unlock deeper discoveries about repairing damage to the brain and spine, Pelaez said, as well as addressing hearing loss. To succeed, researchers must successfully remove and preserve eyes from donors and then successfully connect and repair the optical nerve, which takes information from the eye and tells the brain what the eye sees. A team at New York University performed a full eye transplant on a human patient in November 2023, though the procedure — while a “remarkable achievement,” Pelaez said — did not restore the patient’s vision. It was also part of a partial face transplant; other approaches pursued via the ARPA-H funding will involve eye-specific transplants. Washington, the lead CU researcher, said she and her colleagues have already completed the eye transplant procedure — albeit without vision restoration — in rats. The CU team will next work on large animals to advance “optic nerve regenerative strategies,” the school said, as well as to study immunosuppression, which is critical to ensuring that patients’ immune systems don’t reject a donated organ. The goal is to eventually advance to human trials. Pelaez and his colleagues have completed their eye-removal procedure in cadavers, he said, and they’ve also studied regeneration in several animals that are capable of regenerating parts of their eyes, like salamanders or zebra fish. His team’s funding will focus in part on a life-support machine for the eye to keep it healthy and viable during the removal process. InGel Therapeutics, a Massachusetts-based Harvard spinoff and the lead of a third team, will pursue research on 3-D printed technology and “micro-tunneled scaffolds” that carry certain types of stem cells as part of a focus on optical nerve regeneration and repair, ARPA-H said. ARPH-A, created two years ago, will oversee the teams’ work. Researchers at 52 institutions nationwide will also contribute to the teams. The CU-led group will include researchers from the University of Southern California, the University of Wisconsin, Indiana University and Johns Hopkins University, as well as from the National Eye Institute . The teams will simultaneously compete and collaborate: Pelaez said his team has communicated with researchers at CU and at Stanford, another award recipient, about their eye-removal research. The total funding available for the teams is $125 million, ARPA-H officials said Monday, and it will be distributed in phases, in part dependent on teams’ success. U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette, a Democrat who represents Denver in Congress, acknowledged the recent election results at the press conference Monday and pledged to continue fighting to preserve ARPA-H’s funding under President-elect Donald Trump’s administration. The effort to cure blindness, Washington joked, was “biblical” in its enormity — a reference to the Bible story in which Jesus cures a blind man. She and others also likened it to a moonshot, meaning the effort to successfully put Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the moon nearly 50 years ago. If curing blindness is similar to landing on the moon, then the space shuttle has already left the launchpad, Washington said. “We have launched,” she said, “and we are on our trajectory.”As part of a national “moonshot” to cure blindness, researchers at the CU Anschutz Medical Campus will receive as much as $46 million in federal funding over the next five years to pursue a first-of-its-kind full eye transplantation. Photo credit: Vinitaa Jayson for Fernwayer SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 25, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Fernwayer announced the launch of its new marketplace designed to connect discerning travelers with meticulously curated, high-end private tours, addressing a growing need in the travel market. The company debuts with a carefully selected collection of experiences across five countries: Italy, Spain, Portugal, Morocco, and Croatia, with more countries to follow rapidly. Founded by San Francisco-based entrepreneurs Vinitaa Jayson and Alok Singh, Fernwayer aims to redefine luxury in travel by emphasizing authentic connection, exclusive access, and immersive storytelling. "We aim to flip the itinerary: adventures first, logistics later," explains Jayson. "Most travelers secure accommodation and flights months in advance but often leave booking experiences until the last minute. By then, the best experiences are sold out, and they end up settling for the ordinary. We're changing that by offering highly differentiated experiences, available for booking months in advance, easily and instantly." "We choose to partner with Experience Makers based on their storytelling skills, cultural insight, and welcomingness—our goal is to offer experiences where the expertise of a professional truly makes the difference," adds Jayson. Imagine stepping into Venice’s Carnevale with an expert, capturing the elegance of timeless masks and costumes through your lens. Or watching sunrise from the slopes of Mount Etna , followed by a homemade Sicilian lunch with locals. In Porto , feel the thrill of negotiating the day’s catch with fishermen. Hike through Toubkal National Park with a mountain guide who has deep connections with the Berber community, or dance through Seville’s Feria de Abril , complete with a Sevillana masterclass and a horse-drawn carriage ride. "Uncurated platforms overwhelm travelers with endless, lookalike options, reducing experiences to bare-bones offerings and turning tours into transactions,” says Singh. “Travel agencies inflate prices with opaque, marked-up packages, while layers of intermediaries drive up costs and force weeks of email back-and-forth—only to push generic options from the agent’s playbook in the end, instead of the differentiation that travelers crave. At Fernwayer, we cut through the noise with curated, one-of-a-kind experiences, transparent pricing, instant booking, and a commitment to equitable practices." Fernwayer's experiences span arts and crafts, design and architecture, cultural immersion, gastronomy, photography, social impact initiatives, and outdoor adventures. Most experiences are private and limited to two to eight participants, ensuring intimate and meaningful connections. “We've learned that true luxury is about the richness of experience rather than traditional comforts. It isn’t defined by 'stars'—not a 5-star hotel, not a first-class flight,” says Jayson. “It’s about unrateable moments: being welcomed like a friend in places typically inaccessible to tourists, engaging in heartfelt conversations that reveal new perspectives, or capturing the perfect photo with guidance from a local expert. Travel should be more than just a journey from point A to point B. It should touch the heart, inspire curiosity, create empathy and foster real human connection.” Travelers can now book experiences through the Fernwayer website ( fernwayer.com ) or with a companion mobile app , available for iOS devices, that includes unique planning features such as Travel Goals , Dreamboards for saving favorite experiences, and an itinerary builder called Journeys . About Fernwayer Fernwayer is a marketplace connecting discerning travelers with carefully crafted, authentic, locally-sourced experiences.
