The Bobcats (12-0, 8-0 Big Sky Conference) wrapped up the 123rd meeting in this rivalry with 420 yards, 326 on the ground. Montana State capped its first unbeaten season and can match the school record for consecutive wins with a playoff win in two weeks. The Bobcats, ranked second in the FCS coaches poll, should be the top seed in the playoffs after top-ranked North Dakota State lost its finale to fifth-ranked South Dakota. Montana (8-4, 5-3), ranked 10th, is expected to add to its record 27 FCS playoff appearances but will not have a first-round bye in the 24-team bracket. Montana State quarterback Tommy Mellott was 6-of-12 passing for 94 yards with a touchdown in poor conditions and added 50 yards and a touchdown on the ground. He has helped the Bobcats score at least 30 points in every game this season Mellott had a 5-yard touchdown run on MSU's first possession and Mellott found Jones for a 35-yard touchdown early in the second quarter for a 14-3 lead. Myles Sansted had two field goals in the final two minutes, including a 49-yarder as time expired for a 20-3 halftime lead. Jones dominated the second half and scored two short touchdowns. Eli Gillman scored on a 1-yard run for Montana's touchdown between the Jones' touchdowns. The Grizzlies had just 234 yards and went 2 of 12 on third down. The ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict marks possibly the first truly AI war, with both sides having come to rely on small drones to conduct reconnaissance, identify targets, and even drop lethal bombs over enemy lines. This new type of warfare allows commanders to survey an area from a safe distance and has highlighted the importance of lightweight aerial weapons that can conduct precise strikes instead of much more expensive fighter jets. One drone that costs $15,000 can take down a F-16 that costs tens of millions. Reuters has a look at how Ukraine has been collecting vast sums of video footage from drones to improve the effectiveness of its drone battalions. The story includes an interview with Oleksandr Dmitriev, founder of OCHI, a non-profit Ukrainian system that centralizes and analyzes video from over 15,000 drones on the frontlines. Dmitriev told Reuters that the system has collected more than two million hours of battlefield video since 2022. “This is food for the AI: If you want to teach an AI, you give it 2 million hours (of video), it will become something supernatural,” he said. The OCHI system was originally built to give the military access to drone footage from all nearby crew on one screen, but the group running it realized that the video could be used for training AI. For an AI system to be effective at identifying what it is seeing, it needs to review a lot of footage; Ukraine probably did not have a lot of battlefield footage before 2022. Now, more than six terabytes of data is being added to the system per day, on average. Ukraine’s defense ministry has said that another system called Avengers, which centralizes footage from drones, has been able to spot 12,000 Russian pieces of equipment a week using AI identification. It is not just local Ukrainian companies that are building new AI technology for the battlefield. There is big money to be made in the defense industry, and a slew of Silicon Valley players including Anduril and Palantir, as well as Eric Schmidt’s startup White Stork, have begun offering up drone and AI technology to support Ukraine’s fight. Of course, the biggest concern of skeptics is that these technologies automate a lot of the fighting and make it somewhat abstract; a military could be apt to allow the drone to strike more indiscriminately when they are at a safe distance and not fearful of return fire. Schmidt has emphasized that the drones offered to Ukraine by his company maintain a “human-in-the-loop,” meaning a person is always making the final decision. In a recent interview , Anduril’s Palmer Luckey was asked about the use of AI in weapons systems. “There is a shadow campaign being waged in the United Nations by many of our adversaries to trick Western countries that fancy themselves morally aligned into not applying AI for weapons or defense,” he said. “What is the moral victory in being forced to use larger bombs with more collateral damage because we are not allowed to use systems that can penetrate past Russian or Chinese jamming systems and strike precisely.” Jamming systems are able to scramble GPS and telecommunications used to direct precision-guided weapons, but AI-powered drones can operate unmanned and identify targets without an operator giving an order. Recent reports have suggested that the U.S. has fallen behind adversaries including Russia and China in its ability to remotely disable enemy weapons using jamming technology. Russia has repeatedly disabled precision-guided weapons the U.S. has given Ukraine using more advanced jamming technology than the U.S. has. The U.S. could respond by investing more in evading GPS jamming so that it does not have to use more indiscriminate, automated drones. Or it could try and jam the Russians back. Luckey pointedly called out critics who say a robot should never decide who lives and who dies. “And my point to them is, where’s the moral high ground in a landmine that can’t tell the difference between a school bus full of kids and a Russian tank,” he asked. It seems unlikely a school bus would be driving through a battlefield unless it was a booby trap, but whatever. The war has been a slow grind, with both sides making little advance in recent months. Drones have assisted Ukraine, but are clearly not a panacea with both sides having access to them.‘A man of principle, faith and humility’Economic Disadvantages Of Private Air Strips
There's no denying that 2024 has been a banner year for . The company cemented its position as the gold standard for graphics processing units (GPUs) that underpin , and the future continues to look bright. Since the AI revolution kicked off in early 2023, the stock has gained more than 850%, with 182% gains this year alone. But this doesn't tell the entire story. Over the past six months, even as its business has continued to ramp up, Nvidia's stock has stalled. Concerns about the future adoption of AI, the specter of competition, and a lofty valuation have sent some investors to the sidelines, wondering if the company's best days are behind it. Let's look at what lies ahead for Nvidia and if the stock still represents a compelling opportunity for investors heading into the new year. Catalysts abound There are a number of catalysts that could move Nvidia stock in the early part of 2025, so investors should mark their calendars. CEO Jensen Huang is something of a rock star in the investing community. The popular chief executive tends to generate excitement that has the potential to move Nvidia's stock price whenever he makes public addresses. One such appearance is the opening of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), as Huang is scheduled to give the keynote address on Jan. 6. Huang has his finger on the pulse of the technology industry and is expected to provide his views on the pace of AI adoption and the state of the technology in general. Perhaps more importantly, it's likely he will also give an update on demand for Nvidia's Blackwell platform. The next-generation processor, which is purpose-built for AI applications, was scheduled to begin shipping earlier this month. Huang has previously described demand for the chips as "insane," so expectations are high, and any positive update will likely give the stock a boost. In fact, analyst Atif Malik put Nvidia on a "positive catalyst watch" ahead of Huang's appearance. The analyst maintains a buy rating and a price target of $175, which suggests potential upside of 25% compared to Tuesday's closing price. Malik believes an update on the sale of Blackwell and the potential for increasing margins could send the stock higher. It's worth taking a moment to review investor concerns regarding Nvidia's margins. The company's gross profit margin hit an all-time high of 78.4% during its fiscal 2025 first quarter (ended April 28). However, in the two quarters that followed, those margins slid to 75.1% and 74.6%. Management chalked those declines up to "inventory provisions" related to its upcoming Blackwell launch and is guiding for a gross profit margin of 73% in the current quarter. In some cases, declining profit margins can be a red flag over the longer term, but a decline over two quarters is too small a sample size for investors to be concerned -- particularly on the heels of a record-breaking performance in Q1 and an upcoming product launch. The most significant potential catalyst on the horizon is Nvidia's fiscal 2025 fourth-quarter financial report, which is scheduled to be released on Feb. 26. Management is guiding for revenue of $37.5 billion, which would represent growth of about 70%, though Nvidia has a long history of issuing conservative guidance. For example, after issuing a forecast for 79% growth in Q3, Nvidia delivered growth of roughly 94%. If Blackwell shipments end up being more robust than expected -- and history suggests it could -- the company could blow past Wall Street's expectations, which could also push Nvidia stock higher. Finally, investor fears that the adoption of AI could stall appear overblown. A study by Big Four accounting firm PwC estimates that AI has the potential to add as much as $15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030. In fact, the data suggests that as much as 45% of all economic gains during the period could be the result of product enhancements from AI, sparking additional consumer demand. Should investors buy Nvidia before 2025? There's one final reason investors should consider buying Nvidia stock before 2025 -- its valuation -- but that requires some context. Early this year, when excitement regarding AI had reached a crescendo, Nvidia stock was selling for 83 times earnings. Over the course of the past year, however, that multiple has fallen steadily, and the stock is currently selling for 55 times earnings. While that might still seem expensive at first glance, it's worth putting into historical context. Over the past decade, Nvidia has had an average of 59, which shows its current multiple is historically cheap. Furthermore, Nvidia is expected to generate of $4.43 in fiscal 2026, according to Wall Street. That works out to just 32 times next year's expected earnings, which is an appealing valuation for a company with such a sterling track record of growth. Taken together, Huang's upcoming appearance at CES, the blockbuster potential for Nvidia's next-generation Blackwell AI processor, the potential for improving margins, a compelling valuation, and the company's pivotal role in recent AI advances suggest there's potential upside over the near term. That said, investors looking to make a quick buck should exercise care. Any one of the aforementioned catalysts could go the other way, sending the stock , at least temporarily. Here's the thing: If you believe, like I do, that AI has the potential to transform industries and that Nvidia is one of the principal beneficiaries of this trend, then buy Nvidia stock and hang on for the wild ride to come. It doesn't matter if you buy the stock before 2025 -- as long as you buy it.

A massacre of more than 200 people in Haiti this month followed a gang-ordered manhunt that saw victims, many of them elderly, pulled from their homes and shot or killed with machetes, the UN said Monday. The victims were suspected of involvement in voodoo and accused by a gang leader of poisoning his child, with the suspects taken to a "training center" where many were dismembered or burned after being killed. A civil society organization had said at the time that the gang leader was convinced his son's illness was caused by followers of the religion. "On the evening of December 6, (Micanor Altes) ordered the members of his gang -- around 300 -- to carry out a brutal 'manhunt.' They stormed into about ten alleys of the (Port-au-Prince) neighborhood and forcibly dragged the victims out of their homes," said the report, authored jointly by the UN office in Haiti, BINUH, and the UN Human Rights Commissioner (OCHR). In the days that followed, the gang returned to the neighborhood, abducting adherents from a voodoo temple, targeting individuals suspected of tipping off local media and slaughtering people seeking to escape. Some of the bodies "were then burned with gasoline, or dismembered and dumped into the sea," the report concluded. A total of 134 men and 73 women were killed in total over six days, the report said. A mosaic of violent gangs control most of the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince. The impoverished Caribbean country has been mired for decades by political instability, made worse in recent years by gangs that have grown in strength and organizational sophistication. Despite a Kenyan-led police support mission, backed by the United States and UN, violence has continued to soar. "According to BINUH and OHCHR, since January 2024, more than 5,358 people have been killed and 2,155 injured," the report said. "This brings the total number of people killed or injured in Haiti to at least 17,248 since the beginning of 2022." The UN Security Council "strongly condemned the continued destabilizing criminal activities of armed gangs and stressed the need for the international community to redouble its efforts to provide humanitarian assistance to the population." A spokeswoman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said "these crimes touched the very foundation of Haitian society, targeting the most vulnerable populations." Voodoo was brought to Haiti by African slaves and is a mainstay of the country's culture. It was banned during French colonial rule and only recognized as an official religion by the Haitian government in 2003. While it incorporates elements of other religious beliefs, including Catholicism, voodoo has been historically attacked by other religions. gw/nroNew Collaboration with Green Dot Enables Cash Deposits at Over 7,500 CVS Pharmacy Locations AUSTIN, Texas and SAN FRANCISCO , Dec. 20, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Varo Bank , the first all-digital nationally chartered bank in the U.S., today announced a collaboration with Green Dot Corporation (NYSE: GDOT) and CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) to enable deposits for no fee for millions of Varo Bank customers at over 7,500 participating CVS Pharmacy locations nationwide. 1 Utilizing Green Dot's embedded finance platform (Arc) and expansive money movement network, the "Green Dot Network," Varo customers can now deposit cash at participating CVS Pharmacy locations 2 with zero fees. Trump's Republican Party is increasingly winning union voters. It's a shift seen in his labor pick WASHINGTON (AP) — Working-class voters helped Republicans make steady election gains this year and expanded a coalition that increasingly includes rank-and-file union members. It's a political shift spotlighting one of President-elect Donald Trump’s latest Cabinet picks: a GOP congresswoman, who has drawn labor support, to be his labor secretary. Oregon Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer narrowly lost her bid for a second term this month, despite strong backing from union members. They're a key part of the Democratic base but are gravitating in the Trump era toward a Republican Party traditionally allied with business interests.Smartwatches are no longer a luxury; they have become a must-have accessory for tech-savvy individuals. Knights silence Flames for 6th straight win
Iowa cornerback Jermari Harris has opted out of the remainder of the 2024 season in order to prepare for the NFL draft, according to a report by 247Sports.com . The 6-foot-1 sixth-year senior from Chicago has recorded 27 tackles, three interceptions and a team-high seven pass breakups in 10 games for the Hawkeyes this season. That includes a pick-6 in a 38-21 win over Troy earlier this season. Iowa (6-4, 4-3 Big Ten) plays at Maryland on Saturday before closing out its regular season at home against Nebraska on Nov. 29. The Hawkeyes are already bowl eligible, so Harris is likely opting out of three games in total. After missing the entire 2022 season due to an ankle injury, Harris was suspended for two games of the following season for his involvement in the gambling investigation into Iowa athletics. He later emerged as the Hawkeyes' top cornerback, earning the team's comeback player of the year award after compiling 42 tackles, one interception and eight pass breakups. Harris will finish his college career with 105 tackles and eight interceptions. --Field Level MediaFrom the Archive: In independent India - A struggle beyond freedom
During the three years of our Independence, the country has made progress in many directions and things have been done which, in the pre-independence days, were outside even the realm of schemes or plans. The expansion of education and medical facilities, building new plants, dams, irrigation canals, and roads, the opening of scientific laboratories and virgin soil brought under cultivation, these are some of the achievements of this period besides radical social legislation by the central and the state governments giving equal rights to all citizens with no distinction between men and women, high and low, rich and poor. The Constitution has further set before the nation an ideal of civil liberty and of equal opportunity to all. The achievement of these objectives is the most difficult task that has ever devolved on any country in the very early stages of its freedom, but we are struggling on in pursuit of a great ideal for which we have lived and fought for so long. Gandhiji, through the Congress organisation under whose auspices we have grown up, set that ideal before us. We are yet very far indeed from realising it; we have made only a humble beginning. We might, as is only natural, make mistakes and have to retrace our steps if the conditions so demand in order to serve better. Even if we fail or falter, the laudable ideal will ever remain before us as a beacon light to lead us to individual, social, political, and may I also add spiritual progress. But Independence has brought in its wake several problems which weigh heavily upon us. These are many, and they deserve our consideration, but in this article I shall deal with only two — food and cloth. Their production, if tackled properly, may well pave the way for further progress. Serious thought has been given to the first, but the latter has not received the same attention. I do not propose to elaborate on the various aspects of the problem of food production, but I would like to emphasise here how we should get on with the actual work to achieve a definite result within a prescribed time. We have got sound schemes and ample funds placed at the disposal of the departments concerned. Top priority has also been given to it. Let me enumerate below some of the essential points in regard to this problem: (i) The productive capacity of the existing land under cultivation to increase; save crops from drought and damage as far as possible. (ii) Culturable and virgin soil to be brought under cultivation. (iii) Government to provide necessary means and resources as an aid to implement the above. (iv) Cultivators to put their best on their own initiative without waiting for government help (v) Agency to supervise and execute the scheme. A complete survey of each and every village should be the first and most essential part of our scheme. All this should be done with military precision. An army of land workers should not remain merely a slogan. Every cultivator should be made to feel that he is a soldier of that army and should report at the village panchayat how he is faring with the work allotted to him. If we are in right earnest and prepared to work hard, we can succeed in reducing our imports of foodgrains considerably. Let us now consider the question of cloth. It may not be considered as important as food; yet it will be unwise to minimise its importance. It is needless to emphasise that if we can manage food and cloth for ourselves, there is bound to be economic stability. Mills must produce the quota allotted to them. If they do not cooperate, they should be dealt with firmly and, if necessary, new legislation enacted to deal with them. Labour will also have to bear its share of responsibility and strikes should be eliminated. Khadi should be given the utmost encouragement and the people encouraged to use it even if it is somewhat costly. Government should also patronise it fully. Khadi has great prospects if it receives due encouragement from the government as well as the people. We have got a large population, of which a big percentage has no work or insufficient work. We can provide them with work in the smaller industries. We should not simply try to copy the West as our conditions are different from them. Either we go in for rapid industrialisation through State or private agency or, if that is not possible, and I fear it is not, we must try to speed up our production through small scale and village industries. If we want to make people work-minded, engender a creative spirit and teach them the dignity of labour, the easiest solution is to go in for small-scale industries. The threat of a world war stares us in the face. It may or may not come but the present tension is bound to have its repercussions. There will be a tendency in various countries to keep in reserve agricultural products and other essential commodities and we might not be able to import in future as easily as we could do before. War, or no war, we must produce enough cereals and enough cloth to feed and clothe our people.
