Romanian politicians have voted in favour of a new pro-European coalition government led by incumbent Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu. The move could usher in an end to a protracted political crisis in the European Union country following the annulment of a presidential election by a top court. Parliament approved the new administration in a 240-143 vote in Romania’s 466-seat legislature. The new coalition is made up of the leftist Social Democratic Party (PSD) the centre-right National Liberal Party (PNL), the small ethnic Hungarian UDMR party and national minorities. It caps a month-long period of turmoil in which far-right nationalists made significant gains in a parliamentary election on December 1 a week after a first-round presidential race saw the far-right outsider Calin Georgescu emerge as the front-runner. “It will not be an easy mandate for the future government,” Mr Ciolacu, whose PSD party topped the polls in the parliamentary election, said in a statement. “We are aware that we are in the midst of a deep political crisis,” he said. “It is also a crisis of trust, and this coalition aims to regain the trust of citizens, the trust of the people.” Romania’s 16 ministerial positions will be shared among the parties, which will hold a slim majority in the legislature. It is widely seen as a tactical partnership to shut out far-right nationalists whose voices found fertile ground amid high living costs and a sluggish economy. Mr Ciolacu, who came third in the first-round presidential ballot despite polls indicating he would win the most votes, has served as prime minister since June 2023. After parliament’s approval, President Klaus Iohannis swore in the new government and warned the new Cabinet that it is entering a “difficult new period” in which “for many Romanians, there are major concerns”. Romania was plunged into turmoil after Mr Georgescu’s surprise success in the presidential race, after allegations of electoral violations and Russian interference emerged. Days before the December 8 run-off, the Constitutional Court made the unprecedented move to annul the presidential race. “We go through complicated times, but I think we all learned from mistakes of the past,” Mr Ciolacu said. “I hope that together with my colleagues in the coalition, we’ll find the best solutions to get past the challenges we have in front of us.” Mr Ciolacu said that the new government would aim to quickly organise the rerun of the presidential election in which the new coalition has agreed to put forward an agreed common pro-European candidate. Cristian Andrei, a political consultant based in Bucharest, said that the new government made up of the same political parties will likely embrace “soft populist” rhetoric such as economic patriotism, anti-austerity, and a peace solution in neighbouring Ukraine to counter the rise of far-right populism. “This will be a way to answer the concerns of many Romanians who voted for populists... but will not solve the fundamental problem of trust,” he said. “The only decisive factor now will be who and how convincing the pro-European candidates will be against this popular revolt.” George Simion, the leader of the far-right Alliance for the Unity of Romanians, which came second in the parliamentary election, said that all politicians from his party on Monday would vote against the Ciolacu government. In 2021, the PSD and the PNL also formed an unlikely but increasingly strained coalition together with UDMR, which exited the Cabinet last year after a power-sharing dispute.NYC High-Net-Worth Divorce Lawyer Juan Luciano Offers Guidance on Protecting Assets in Divorce 12-13-2024 07:40 PM CET | Politics, Law & Society Press release from: ABNewswire Facing the complexities of a high-net-worth divorce can be an emotional and financial challenge. For individuals in New York City with substantial assets, it is essential to protect these resources during a divorce. NYC high-net-worth divorce lawyer Juan Luciano ( https://divorcelawfirmnyc.com/protecting-assets-in-a-high-net-worth-divorce/ ) emphasizes the importance of taking proactive steps to safeguard financial interests and avoid lengthy legal battles. High-net-worth divorces often involve significant financial stakes, including real estate, businesses, investments, and other valuable assets. According to NYC high-net-worth divorce lawyer Juan Luciano, understanding how New York's equitable distribution laws affect asset division is critical. "New York courts divide assets based on what is deemed fair, not necessarily equal. This makes it vital to protect your financial future by taking appropriate measures early in the process," says Luciano. One of the most effective ways to shield assets in a high-net-worth divorce is through prenuptial or postnuptial agreements. As NYC high-net-worth divorce lawyer Juan Luciano explains, "A well-crafted prenuptial agreement establishes how assets will be distributed in the event of a divorce, reducing disputes and ensuring clarity. For those already married, a postnuptial agreement can offer similar protections." These legal instruments allow individuals to define the treatment of assets acquired before or during the marriage, providing clarity in contentious situations. For those without a prenuptial agreement, maintaining clear boundaries between marital and non-marital property is essential. Assets owned before marriage are typically considered separate property, but commingling these resources with marital funds can complicate their classification. Juan Luciano advises his clients to keep personal accounts and property separate to avoid potential disputes during asset division. In cases where disputes over property valuation arise, professional appraisals often play a crucial role. Determining the value of assets such as real estate, businesses, and unique investments often requires specialized expertise. Luciano underscores the importance of accurate valuations, noting that "engaging skilled appraisers ensures that all parties understand the value of the marital estate, facilitating a more equitable distribution of assets." Trusts can also provide an effective way to protect assets during a high-net-worth divorce. By placing property in a trust, individuals can shield these assets from becoming part of the marital estate. Luciano highlights this as a strategic option for safeguarding financial interests while maintaining legal and financial clarity. When litigation becomes necessary, having an experienced NYC high-net-worth divorce lawyer can make a significant difference. Luciano explains, "Negotiating a separation agreement can save time and reduce costs, but when both parties cannot agree, court intervention may be required. Having a skilled attorney ensures your interests are effectively represented throughout the process." For high-net-worth individuals, securing a lawyer with a deep understanding of the complexities involved in asset valuation and division is essential. In high-stakes divorces, mistakes in asset distribution or valuation can result in significant financial losses. Luciano emphasizes the need for careful legal representation to protect clients from unnecessary risks and complications. Beyond asset protection, Luciano also assists clients in negotiating settlement agreements that can minimize the emotional toll and financial burden of prolonged litigation. Settlement agreements offer a binding resolution to property disputes, often avoiding the need for trial. However, when negotiations fail, Luciano's experience in courtroom advocacy ensures his clients are well-prepared to pursue a favorable outcome. Juan Luciano's dedication to his clients extends beyond property division. His approach includes guiding individuals through the often overwhelming legal landscape of divorce, offering reassurance and clarity during a challenging time. He advises his clients to take a proactive approach to asset management and seek professional advice to prepare for potential complications. For those considering divorce, taking steps to protect assets early can make a substantial difference. Whether through prenuptial agreements, trusts, or careful financial planning, high-net-worth individuals can preserve their financial stability with the guidance of an experienced lawyer. Juan Luciano encourages anyone facing a high-net-worth divorce in New York City to seek knowledgeable legal counsel to protect their rights and secure their future. About Juan Luciano Divorce Lawyer: Juan Luciano is a respected NYC high-net-worth divorce lawyer with extensive experience in asset valuation, property division, and the complexities of high-stakes divorce cases. Dejan Kulusevski cannot wait for the opportunity to play against Manchester City again after Tottenham ran riot at the Etihad Stadium. The Sweden midfielder hailed Saturday’s 4-0 thrashing of the champions as the best game of his career. The 24-year-old delivered an outstanding performance as Spurs shattered the champions’ 52-game unbeaten home run, helping start the rout with a superb cross for James Maddison’s opening goal. Kulusevski said: “I believed (we would win) this because in the past years, we’ve come here and played really well. “So this is the game I look forward to most in the year and, once again, it happened – glory to God. “I’d say it’s the best result ever in my career. It’s a big night for the whole club, for the coach, for the players. “Because City have a lot of the ball sometimes, we can rest when we defend. There’s also so much space up there, we play one against one and then it’s always dangerous because we have a lot of quality. “It’s always great to play great teams because they always want to play football. When you play lower teams, sometimes it’s not. There’s not much football played because they are a lot of fouls, a lot of injuries and it’s slow going.” Maddison stole the show with two goals in quick succession in the first half while Pedro Porro and Brennan Johnson later got on the scoresheet. Yet Kulusevski’s performance was also eye-catching and the player himself believes there is plenty more to come from him. Asked if his form made him feel “unstoppable”, Kulusevski said: “I feel like that. I feel very good and I’m trying to keep this way. I’m very happy, I’m trying to improve. “I started the season good but there is over half of the season left and I hope I can do much better. “I think I have something that no other player has. With my engine, with my heart – I don’t get tired – I feel like I can do a lot still in my career.” Tottenham’s scintillating performance marked a spectacular return to form after their dismal loss to Ipswich in their previous Premier League outing. Kulusevski said: “We have to be much more consistent. It’s not a turning point. We just have to be better in other games. “This game suited us perfectly but we have a lot of improvement to make in the other games.”New Hampshire reels off 27-straight points in 27-9 win over MaineNew pro-European coalition approved in Romania amid period of political turmoil
Matt Gaetz withdraws attorney general nominationBERLIN (AP) — Harry Kane scored a hat trick including two penalties for Bayern Munich to beat Augsburg 3-0 in the Bundesliga on Friday. The win stretched Bayern’s lead to eight points ahead of the rest of the 11th round, and Kane took his goals tally to a league-leading 14. The England forward is the fastest player to reach 50 goals in the Bundesliga in what was his 43rd game. However, coach Vincent Kompany should be concerned by his team’s ongoing difficulty of scoring in matches it dominates. Bayern previously defeated St. Pauli and Benfica only 1-0. Kompany’s team had to wait until stoppage time before Kane sealed the result with his second penalty. Two minutes later, Kane scored with a header after controlling Leon Goretzka's cross with his first touch for a flattering scoreline. “We had to be patient,” Kane said. “And at halftime that’s what we said, to keep doing what we’re doing. We had a few chances in the first half and we just had to be a bit more clinical and obviously, thankfully, we got the penalty to kind of open the game up.” Mads Pedersen was penalized for handball following a VAR review and Kane duly broke the deadlock in the 63rd. Bayern continued as before with 80% possession, but had to wait for Keven Schlotterbeck to be penalized through VAR for a foul on Kane. Kane sealed the result in the third minute of stoppage time and there was still time for him to grab another. It’s Bayern’s seventh consecutive win without conceding a goal since it conceded four at Barcelona (4-1) on Oct. 23 in the Champions League. “You can see now that we have a solid defense and that's the basis, also in games like today's,” Bayern midfielder Joshua Kimmich said. “When it's a game of patience, then it's important for us to know that sometimes one goal will have to do. Like today we added two more before the finish, but in the end you only need to score one more than the opponent.” Bayern next hosts Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Tuesday, then Borussia Dortmund away in the Bundesliga next weekend, before defending champion Bayer Leverkusen visits in the third round of the German Cup. ___ AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccer Ciarán Fahey, The Associated Press
How Washington outsider Jimmy Carter wooed voters tired of Vietnam and WatergateThe Tennessee Titans pulled off an upset victory over the divisional rival Houston Texans on Sunday, winning by a final score of 32-27. The game had a little bit of everything. Numerous explosive touchdowns, costly interceptions , a missed chip shot field goal, and a game-sealing safety. By the time it was all said and done, the Titans actually had some lucky breaks go their way. One week after defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons said the Titans were "cursed by officiating," it was a few key penalties against the Texans that helped Tennessee prevail. Not a bad time for a reverse jinx. With less than five minutes remaining in the game, the Texans were driving down the field trailing by three points. C.J. Stroud connected with a wide open Nico Collins for a 33-yard touchdowns to give Houston the lead...but there were flags on the field. An illegal shift penalty against the Texans took the TD off the board. CJ Stroud could not believe Joe Mixon had an illegal formation on a Nico Collins TD. pic.twitter.com/P8DMugZJX5 A few minutes later, Houston had to settle for a chip shot field goal attempt. Ka'imi Fairbairn, one of the NFL's most reliable kickers, hooked it wide left and preserved Tennessee's 30-27 lead with 1:56 remaining. It was a series of unfortunate events for Houston. But it's exactly the type of thing that has gone against the Titans in any other game this season. That illegal shift penalty negating the Collins touchdown felt all to familiar to the illegal formation penalty which brought back a pivotal 53-yard Calvin Ridley touchdown in the Titans-Vikings game last week. Not this time. Earlier in the fourth quarter, there was also a sequence where the Texans were called for back-to-back false start penalties. That temporarily killed a possession and gave life to Tennessee (which the Titans gave right back on a muffed punt). For a team that has talked all season about how "the ball hasn't bounced their way," it feels like it finally did in Houston. Although the Titans are now sitting at 3-8 and still out of contention, getting a rivalry win against the AFC South leader on the road is a huge confidence boost. It's validation for Brian Callahan, Ran Carthon, Will Levis, and the whole organization that things are building in the right direction. Maybe Jeffery Simmons should talk about curses more often. Saquon Barkley became the ninth running back in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards in a single season as the Philadelphia Eagles clinched the NFC East title with victory over the Dallas Cowboys.
