Russian hockey is alive and well, individually. But it’s not alive in any team concept internationally. Ovechkin has been a long-time supporter of Russian president Vladimir Putin. So has the Stanley Cup-winning goaltender, Sergei Bobrovsky, who was just named Russian athlete of the year. We like their hockey but don’t care much for their politics or the war that continues in Ukraine. Ovechkin has had an incredible run since entering the NHL in 2005. His 868 goals are 266 more than anyone who has played during his time. Sidney Crosby is second in goals at 602, as of Saturday. Steven Stamkos and another Russian, Evgeni Malkin, are the only others within 300 goals of Ovie’s totals. In Gretzky’s career, he finished 186 goals ahead of Mike Gartner, 281 and 284 ahead of Mario Lemieux and Mark Messier. Ovechkin, in his time, is individually more of a dominant goal-scorer than Gretzky was in his time. And there’s a certain discomfort that goes along with it all in current times. I can cheer for Ovechkin the hockey player, while at the same time feel disdain for his politics and those of his leader and country. Sports and politics mix, whether we want them to or not. Rarely are they as separate as they should be or as they seem right now while Ovechkin works his way to a mark that may never be equalled. THIS AND THAT There is nothing wrong with Mitch Marner that a playoff series against Detroit or Buffalo or Pittsburgh wouldn’t solve. Marner has 13 goals this season, 10 of them against teams that won’t be in the playoffs. He has six playoff goals in his past 37 playoff games ... Marner, having a terrific season, still ranks below Mikko Rantanen and Kucherov in scoring among right wingers ... He was telling me all about his underrated centre, Mark Scheifele. He said NHL scouts had him rated too low and he was going to be a good one. The new map, intended to protect environmentally sensitive areas and public safety, includes 175.5 miles of unimproved roads, with an additional 28.3 additional miles open in hunting seasons for those with valid hunting licenses, the DEP said. That means about 325 miles of unimproved roads, some dating to the Revolutionary period, are now closed, based on totals provided by the state Department of Environmental Protection in the past. A DEP spokesman declined Tuesday to say how many miles of unimproved road were being closed by the plan. For the first time, the DEP is including another 57.5 miles of municipal, county and state roads in the map, saying the total miles of available roads is more than 260, at least during hunting season. John Druding of Open Trails NJ said he was extremely disappointed by how restrictive the new map is, cutting off access to swaths of the forest to hunters, birders and others. Open Trails NJ is an advocacy organization for access in Wharton. "It seems they just ignored all of that (data and testimony from those advocating for greater access) and went with something even more restrictive than the one from back in 2015, which they basically apologized for." A 2015 proposed map, which the DEP pulled back from after public outcry, would have left 225 miles of unimproved road open and closed 275 miles. As always, only street-legal, registered and insured vehicles are allowed anywhere in the forest. ATVs, vehicles with tires larger than 40 inches in overall diameter and other off-road unregistered vehicles are illegal but have also caused much damage, officials and environmentalists have said. The state has struggled to find the right balance between motorized use of Wharton's roads, which locals have enjoyed for decades, and protection of sensitive forest areas. It has also said the poor condition of some unimproved roads, particularly after heavy rains, endangers users' safety. Some parts of the Pine Barrens ecosystem have been greatly rutted and eroded by motorized activity, and environmental groups like the Pinelands Preservation Alliance have lobbied for restrictions to protect wetlands, bogs and more. Open Trails had argued for closure of only the most fragile sections of road, with a class system assigned to the vast majority of them. Similar to ski run classifications, they would warn people about roads in worse condition that require specialized vehicles. The DEP lists 43 animals found in Wharton as threatened or endangered, including the Pine Barrens tree frog, timber rattlesnake and pine snake. About 750 species of plants, including wild orchids, sedges, grasses and insect-eating plants, are also found there. Open Trails got 6,400 signatures on a petition opposing mass road closings and convinced 11 municipalities with land in the forest to pass resolutions condemning the DEP's proposed maps, he said. But the DEP didn't seem to take any of that into consideration. A new map of the roads of Wharton State Forest identifies about 200 miles of usable, legal roads in the forest, where there were more than 500 miles included on a previous map. A public comment period began Wednesday. The map is now in effect, according to the DEP, but State Park Police who will enforce it will consider the remainder of the year a time for education. "Beginning January 1, 2025, State Park Police will begin stricter enforcement of the Wharton Visiting Vehicle Use Map, including the issuance of summonses at the discretion of the responding officer," a Monday news release from the DEP said. Wharton encompasses parts of Atlantic, Camden and Burlington counties. It is the largest single tract of land in the New Jersey State Park System. Fines for illegal off-road vehicle use and damages are up to $500 for a first offense, $1,000 for a second offense and a minimum of $1,000 for a third or subsequent offense, according to the DEP. If violators damage or destroy natural resources, fines can be up to five times the cost of the damages. Vehicles may also be impounded at an additional cost. With a defined network of roads, the State Park Service will be working to maintain access for vehicles, with help from the New Jersey Forest Fire Service in maintaining roads. "I don't think it's enforceable," Druding said. "It's going to keep the good guys away — they are going to follow the rules and laws. Outlaws are going to keep doing what they are doing. They will probably be emboldened, because the other eyeballs out there otherwise to report them are not going to be present." The areas of roads that do go through environmentally sensitive areas could be closed off, without closing the entire road, he said. "Certainly some of them go through sensitive areas," Druding said. "I wouldn't have any opposition to those types of roads being closed. I would prefer they be closed at the point where they traverse through a stream as opposed to the entire thing." (AP) — A senior official in President Joe Biden's administration who oversaw its contentious efforts to address climate change by curbing oil drilling on federal lands while expanding renewable power was named Tuesday as the next president of a prominent environmental group. U.S. Bureau of Land Management Director Tracy Stone-Manning will become president of The Wilderness Society effective next February, the Washington, D.C.-based group announced. Stone-Manning's 2021 nomination by Biden was bitterly opposed by Republicans who labeled her an “eco-terrorist” over her past ties with environmental extremists. Senate Democrats pushed through her confirmation on a party-line vote. The land bureau has jurisdiction over almost a quarter-billion acres (100 million hectares) of land, primarily in western states, that is used for oil exploration, mining, livestock grazing, recreation and other purposes. Under Stone-Manning, it sharply reduced oil and gas lease sales and raised royalty rates that companies must pay to extract the fuel. It also issued a rule elevating the importance of conservation , by making it a “use” of public lands on par with drilling or grazing. That marked a sharp departure from the land bureau's longstanding reputation for favoring commercial development over environmental preservation. The moves drew pushback from the energy, mining and ranching industries and their Republican allies in Congress. Spiking trees involves inserting metal or ceramic rods into trunks so they can’t be safely cut down, and the tactic has sometimes been used to halt timber sales. Two men were charged in the case, and Stone-Manning later testified against them, saying she mailed the letter at the request of one of the men and to prevent people from getting hurt. She was given immunity to testify and was never charged with any crimes, although an investigator later said she had stonewalled the criminal probe . During the debate over her nomination, GOP lawmakers called her a dangerous choice. She was confirmed with backing from moderate Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia. President-elect Donald Trump nominated Republican North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum to be secretary of the Interior, which includes the Bureau of Land Management. PHOENIX — A man has been arrested in connection to a deadly shooting Monday evening. Officials say the shooting happened around 5 p.m. Monday in the area of 19th and Glendale avenues. When officers arrived, they found 35-year-old Keshawn Stewart with at least one gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital where he later died. A woman, described in court documents as a victim of the shooting, told investigators that she was in a "love triangle style" relationship with Stewart and 33-year-old Khalid Williams. Williams told investigators that he had been in a relationship with the woman for six years and that there was a long history of physical and verbal fights. They broke up when he found out she was dating Stewart, who possibly got her pregnant. Court documents say Williams and the woman tried to maintain an amicable relationship but had arguments over a vehicle that Stewart owned but Williams was paying for. Stewart and his girlfriend then decided to drive to Williams' apartment. Williams told investigators that he admitted to taking an AK47 out to meet them "because he felt the need to defend himself," though he said that neither of the victims had been known to have weapons. When the two victims arrived, Stewart and Williams argued and got into a physical fight. According to court documents, Williams wanted to talk to the woman and partially got into the backseat of the vehicle when Stewart began diving away. After getting out of the vehicle, Williams allegedly began shooting, striking Stewart. Williams was arrested on Thursday and told investigators that he didn't know what made him do it, "other than the culmination of the stress and drama of their relationship," court documents say. He faces charges including murder, attempted murder, and possession of a weapon by a prohibited person. During Williams' court appearance, a Maricopa County attorney stated that Williams has prior felony offenses. She claims Gary “pushed” Leah to form a relationship with Kristina. Portwood insists her ex-fiance did so to “silence” her and keep her away from her child. You also get just about all the tech you would expect from a luxury car with the base Sprint variant, like advanced driver assistance systems, an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and compatibility with Android Auto and Apple Car Play. If want to make your daily drive a little bit more dynamic while saving yourself a few thousand bucks, the 2024 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Sprint is definitely a good pick. The 2025 Mercedes-Benz GLB 250 is a bit smaller than the X3 and has less power at just 221 horsepower. Originally launched in 2019 for the 2020 model year , the 2025 model starts at just $45,800 and is still as luxurious as what BMW offers. If you live in a state where it snows a lot, consider paying $2,000 more for the 4MATIC variant, which gives you AWD. And if you have a large family or love taking your friends on trips, you could get an optional third row for just $850. The GLB 250 doesn't have the included features you'd find on the Volvo XC60, nor does it have the performance of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Sprint. But for more than $4,000 less than the base BMW X3, you're still getting the premium experience of a luxury car. Besides, if you're not a fan of the panoramic roof and tons of chrome on your car, then you're better off not paying for them in the first place. You're definitely getting a lot more car for a lot less money with the GV70. And although the Genesis name doesn't carry the same weight as BMW or Mercedes-Benz, what's more important is the experience you get when you're inside the vehicle. The GV70 gives you everything you expect in terms of tech and safety as standard, like advanced driver assistance systems, wireless phone charging, and an absolutely massive 14.5-inch infotainment system that makes it even larger than some laptop screens. Nevertheless, it's still a good option if you're looking for an X3 alternative, especially if you prefer comfort over performance. It comes with a large infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple Car Play that gives acoustic feedback with everything you do on the screen, adaptive cruise control, and advanced driver assistance systems. Aside from that, one of the things that you should know about the Q5 is that it's Audi's best seller in the U.S., so you're in good company if you pick this car as your next ride. If you want a luxurious compact SUV like the BMW X3 but also want the reliability that Japanese brands are known for, then you should look at the Acura RDX. Although the Acura RDX and Honda CR-V are closely related , the former offers a more premium experience with its better technology and more engine power, making it quite comparable to the other luxury SUVs in our list. For example, the RDX has a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder with VTEC that outputs 272 horsepower and 280 lb-feet of torque. Harris’ leadership team, speaking on the “Pod Save America” podcast that aired on Tuesday, defended strategic decisions over the campaign’s closing days, some of which have faced scrutiny in the weeks since Trump’s decisive victory. Specifically, they defended Harris’ outreach to Republican voters, her unwillingness to distance herself from Biden, her silence on Trump’s attacks on her transgender policies and her inability to schedule an interview with popular podcaster Joe Rogan. “In a 107-day race, it is very difficult to do all the things you would normally do in a year and a half, two years,” said Harris campaign senior adviser Jen O’Malley Dillon. David Plouffe, another senior adviser, added, “There was a price to be paid for the short campaign.” The pointed reflections on Harris’ loss came just before she was scheduled to host a conference call with supporters as the party begins a painful process of self-examination. Trump won every swing state and made gains among key voting groups traditionally aligned with Democrats — young voters and voters of color, among them.
