MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — The Australian Senate on Thursday began considering a ban on children younger than 16 years old from social media after the House of Representatives overwhelmingly supported the age restriction. The world-first bill that would make platforms including TikTok, Facebook, Snapchat, Reddit, X and Instagram liable for fines of up to 50 million Australian dollars ($33 million) for systemic failures to prevent young children from holding accounts is likely to be passed by the Senate on Thursday, the Parliament’s final session for the year and potentially the last before elections, which are due within months. The major parties’ support for the ban all but guarantees the legislation will become law. But many child welfare and mental health advocates are concerned about unintended consequences. Unaligned Sen. Jacqui Lambie complained about the limited amount of time the government gave the Senate to debate the age restriction, which she described as “undercooked.” “I thought this was a good idea. A lot of people out there thought it was a good idea until we looked at the detail and, let's be honest, there's no detail,” Lambie told the Senate. The House of Representatives on Wednesday overwhelmingly carried the bill 102 votes to 13. Once the legislation becomes law, the platforms would have one year to work out how they could implement the ban before penalties are enforced. The platforms complained that the law would be unworkable, and urged the Senate to delay the vote until at least June next year when a government-commissioned evaluation of age assurance technologies made its report on how young children could be excluded. Critics argue the government is attempting to convince parents it is protecting their children ahead of general elections due by May. The government hopes that voters will reward it for responding to parents' concerns about their children's addiction to social media. Some argue the legislation could cause more harm than it prevents. Criticisms include that the legislation was rushed through Parliament without adequate scrutiny, is ineffective, poses privacy risks for all users, and undermines parental authority to make decisions for their children. Opponents of the bill also argue the ban would isolate children, deprive them of the positive aspects of social media, drive them to the dark web, discourage children too young for social media to report harm and reduce incentives for platforms to improve online safety.

The AUKUS partnership is a form of an Asian NATO, the Taiwanese government says, after welcoming further transits of Australian warships through the Taiwan Strait to counter China's military activity. Speaking to journalists, Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Francois Wu agreed the proposal floated by Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba for a NATO-like security pact in Asia would likely anger Beijing. "Maybe it's not good for the stability of the region," Mr Wu he told a group of Australian reporters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the capital Taipei in November. "But having said that ... AUKUS in some way, is another form of (an) Asian NATO." The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation is an alliance of 30 European and two North American nations set up to defend each other against attacks by third parties. "You just don't need to call (AUKUS) NATO, but it is a real NATO," Mr Wu said. Under the AUKUS partnership, Australia has been promised at least three Virginia-class submarines from the US in the early 2030s, with a new class of nuclear-powered boats to be built for delivery from the 2040s. In a joint statement, Australia, the UK and US earlier this year said they were consulting with New Zealand, Canada and South Korea to identify possibilities for collaboration on capabilities under AUKUS Pillar II, which covers advanced capabilities. Beijing has warned New Zealand if it were to join the partnership, it would inevitably have a negative impact on the country's relationship with China. Mr Wu said while Taiwan couldn't join these agreements because of Beijing's opposition, it would be good for countries such as Japan, Canada or New Zealand to do so. US president-elect Donald Trump has made comments about Taiwan, saying it should pay the US for its defence, prompting concern amongst officials about how Washington's position may change after his inauguration in January. Mr Wu questioned how Mr Trump could make the US "great again" if he abandoned Taiwan. "He will lose the credibility of the US in the total Asia-Pacific," he said. "Every day we need to send a message to (Chinese President) Xi Jinping, not to invade Taiwan." Australian National University expert associate Jennifer Parker said while AUKUS was not a de-facto NATO, and was a capability rather than a security pact, it had been positive to see its increased acceptance in the region. "Different regions require different security constructs - And the NATO-like structure that relies on an aligned strategic outlook is not likely to be a successful model for Asia - as evidenced by the failure of the (1954 Southeast Asia Treaty Organisation, which was dissolved in 1977)," she told AAP. "We are a long way off from additional countries joining Pillar II of AUKUS, if ever. "But we will certainly see increased collaboration on AUKUS initiatives under Pillar II with countries such as Japan, Canada, New Zealand and South Korea." A senior Taiwanese official speaking anonymously said the island welcomed the passage of Australian warships through the strait, and would like to see more of it. Warships from Japan, Australia and New Zealand sailed through the Taiwan Strait in late September, prompting Beijing to warn it remained vigilant against any acts that might jeopardise its sovereignty. Ms Parker said transits through the strait by European and regional navies alongside Australia's, had increased in the last 12 months. "They are an important method of highlighting that the Taiwan Strait is international waters and reinforcing support for the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea in the face of China's regional attempts to challenge these norms," she said. China claims self-governed Taiwan as a breakaway province after the government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) relocated to the island in 1949 during the civil war with the Chinese Communist Party. The AAP reporter travelled to Taipei with the assistance of the Taiwanese government.None

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) — A Ukrainian girls’ hockey team is in Canada for a few days of peace and hockey in an arena that doesn’t have a missile-sized hole in its roof. After 56 hours of travel to Calgary, including a 24-hour bus ride from Dnipro to Warsaw, Poland, that required army escort for a portion of it, the Ukrainian Wings will join Wickfest, Hayley Wickenheiser’s annual girls’ hockey festival, on Thursday. The squad of players aged 11 to 13 was drawn from eight different cities in Ukraine, where sport facilities have been damaged or destroyed since Russia started its invasion in February 2022. “They all have a personal story of something awful happening,” said Wickenheiser. “We give them a week of peace and joy here, and I hope they can carry that with them. “We know full well they’re going back to difficult circumstances. It’s tough that way.” Nine players are from Kharkiv, where pictures show a large hole in the roof of the Saltovskiy Led arena where the girls’ team WHC Panthers once skated. “It was our home ice arena, and we played all our national team championships in this ice arena,” said Kateryna Seredenko, who oversees the Panthers program and is the Wings general manager. RELATED COVERAGE Minnesota Frost rookie Claire Thompson trades stethoscope for hockey stick to resume playing career PWHL New York Sirens’ trajectory points up with addition of rookie star Sarah Fillier and new home PWHL releases neutral-site schedule with games ranging from North Carolina to the Pacific Northwest Ukraine’s Olympic Committee posted photos and wrote in a Facebook post Sept. 1 that Kharkiv’s Sport Palace, which was home to multiple hockey teams, was also destroyed in an attack on the city. Seredenko says the Wings’ arduous journey to Calgary was worth it because it gives the girls hope. “It’s not a good situation in Ukraine, but when they come here, they can believe that everything will be good, everything will be fine, of course we will win soon and we must play hockey. We can’t stop because we love these girls and we will do everything for them,” she said. “So many girls on this Ukrainian team are future players of the national team.” Wickenheiser, a Hockey Hall of Famer , is the assistant general manager of player development for the Toronto Maple Leafs and a doctor who works emergency room shifts in the Toronto area. The six-time Olympian and four-time gold medalist organized her first Wickfest after the 2010 Winter Games. She’s had teams from India, Mexico and the Czech Republic attend over the last decade and a half, but never a team that ran the Ukrainians’ gauntlet of logistics. The Canadian Partnership for Women and Children’s Health took on the task of arranging visas and paying for the team’s travel. “We care about women and children’s health. Sport is such a symbol. When you see a group of girls coming off the ice all sweaty and having worked hard on the ice, it’s a symbol of a healthy girl,” said chief executive officer Julia Anderson. “That’s a healthy kid that’s able to participate in sport. We really believe if we can get girls there, whether they’re in an active war zone, or here in Canada, those girls will change the world.” The Wings aren’t the first Ukrainians to seek a hockey haven in Canada since the war began. An under-25 men’s team played four games against university squads in early 2023 to prepare for that year’s world university games. Ukrainian teams have also twice played in the Quebec City International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament. “It’s the first time in Ukrainian history where a girls’ team is coming to Canada to a very good tournament,” Seredenko said. “They can see how they can play in their future. And they can see how it is to play hockey in Canada.” ___ AP sports: https://apnews.com/sportsRALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The very close election for a North Carolina Supreme Court seat heads next to a hand recount even as election officials announced a machine recount of over 5.5 million ballots resulted in no margin change between the candidates. The statewide machine recount — in which ballots were run again through tabulators — that wrapped up this week showed Democratic Associate Justice Allison Riggs with a 734-vote lead over Republican challenger Jefferson Griffin, who is a Court of Appeals judge. Most county election boards reported minor vote changes from the machine recount requested by Griffin. But State Board of Elections data showed the post-recount lead exactly the same as what Riggs held after all 100 counties fully completed their ballot canvass in November. Griffin led Riggs by about 10,000 votes on election night, but that lead dwindled and flipped to Riggs as tens of thousands of qualifying provisional and absentee ballots were added to the totals through the canvass. Griffin, who already has pending election protests challenging the validity of more than 60,000 ballots counted statewide, has asked for a partial hand-to-eye recount, which county boards will start Wednesday or Thursday. The partial hand recount applies to ballots in 3% of the voting sites in all 100 counties, chosen at random Tuesday by the state board. Once the partial recount is complete, a statewide hand recount would be ordered if the sample results differ enough from the machine recount that the result would be reversed if the difference were extrapolated to all ballots. Riggs, who was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2023 and now seeks an eight-year term, again claimed victory Tuesday. In a campaign news release, spokesperson Embry Owen said Griffin “needs to immediately concede – losing candidates must respect the will of voters and not needlessly waste state resources.” Riggs is one of two Democrats on the seven-member court. Through attorneys, Griffin has challenged ballots that he says may not qualify for several reasons and cast doubt on the election result. Among them: voter registration records of some voters casting ballots lack driver's license or partial Social Security numbers, and overseas voters never living in North Carolina may run afoul of state residency requirements. State and county boards are considering the protests. Griffin's attorneys on Monday asked the state board to accelerate the matters before it and make a final ruling early next week. "Our priority remains ensuring that every legal vote is counted and that the public can trust the integrity of this election,” state Republican Party spokesperson Matt Mercer said in a news release. Final rulings by the state board can be appealed to state court. Joining Griffin in protests are three Republican legislative candidates who still trailed narrowly in their respective races after the machine recounts. The Supreme Court race and two of these three legislative races have not been called by The Associated Press. The key pending legislative race is for a House seat covering Granville County and parts of Vance County. Republican Rep. Frank Sossamon trails Democratic challenger Bryan Cohn by 228 votes, down from 233 votes before the recount. Sossamon also asked for a partial hard recount in his race, which was to begin Tuesday. Should Cohn win, Republicans will fall one seat short of the 72 needed in the 120-member House to retain its veto-proof majority — giving more leverage to Democratic Gov.-elect Josh Stein in 2025. Senate Republicans already have won 30 of the 50 seats needed to retain its supermajority in their chamber. The AP on Tuesday did call another legislative race not subject to a protest, as Mecklenburg County GOP Rep. Tricia Cotham won her reelection bid over Democrat Nicole Sidman. A machine recount showed Cotham ahead of Sidman by 213 votes, compared to 216 after the county canvass. Cotham’s switch from the Democrats to the Republicans in April 2023 secured the Republicans' 72-seat veto-proof majority so that Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper’s vetoes could be overridden by relying solely on GOP lawmakers.
MAHOMET — Minutes before she and two family members were fatally shot Wednesday night, a Mahomet woman described the man thought to be the killer in a social-media post. On a Twitter account where she shared occasional selfies, life updates and memes, Sara Mason, 26, posted about a man in a motorcycle helmet being outside her home the night of Wednesday, Dec. 18, less than 20 minutes before police were called to the scene. "Trying not to be scared suburban white woman about the dude waiting outside of my house for a .... While now? Wanting to speak to my brother while wearing a motorcycle helmet (drive in a car)," she posted at 9:22 p.m. Within a minute, she added, "He like left but will probably be back. Anyway." Mahomet police were called at 9:41 p.m. to the residence on Riverside Court, where they discovered Mason, who was pronounced dead at the scene; and her mother, 61-year-old Janis Mason, and brother, 23-year-old Caleb Mason, who both died a little later after being taken to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. It does not appear that Sara Mason recognized John R. Lyons, 24, the man police suspect in the triple homicide. Lyons fled to suburban Chicago, where he was killed in a confrontation with police in Berwyn. Champaign County court records indicate that in June, Lyons filed a lawsuit alleging Caleb Mason had harmed him in some way and requesting compensation in an amount between $15,000 and $50,000. Mahomet police Chief Mike Metzler said Lyons knew one of the victims. Police reports thus far have not included details about whether Lyons was wearing a motorcycle helmet. However, on Thursday, Dec. 19, far-right political pundit and streamer Nicholas Fuentes posted that an armed individual who arrived at his house late Wednesday night wearing a motorcycle helmet had "committed a triple homicide in southern Illinois." "Last night an armed killer made an attempt on my life at my home, which was recently doxed on this platform," Fuentes wrote. He said the killer broke into his neighbor's home in Berwyn, where police said Lyons broke in and killed two dogs while attempting to evade arrest. Fuentes posted multiple clips of footage from Ring security cameras that show a man in brown pants, a blue coat and a white motorcycle helmet who is carrying a firearm and crossbow. In the footage, the man gets out of a car while wearing a motorcycle helmet and appears to ring the doorbell and knock on the front door, then attempt to gain access through multiple entry points. The only audio in any of the clips is while the man is at the front door and apparently says "Yo, Nick." Timestamps on footage Fuentes posted indicate the events around his home in Berwyn beginning at 11:29 p.m., about one hour and 50 minutes after police were called to the home in Mahomet. About 10 minutes later, at 11:38 p.m., Berwyn police responded to a report of a man with a gun. "It is to the freedom of the people of Illinois that we are addressing this law," Gov. J.B. Pritzker said May 10, referring to the state's semiautomatic weapons ban, "their freedom to be at the Highland Park parade without getting shot and killed." Jacqui Lambie complained about the limited amount of time the government gave the Senate to debate the age restriction, which she described as “undercooked.” “I thought this was a good idea. The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State on Saturday elected Chief Tony Okocha as its new chairman. He was elected unopposed alongside other members of the APC executive committee at the party’s state delegate congress held in Port Harcourt. Okocha was the chairman of the APC caretaker committee in Rivers State before the congress. The exercise was conducted through a voice vote and was supervised by the party’s official from the national secretariat in Abuja, Dr. Adoye Omalez. The APC National Vice Chairman, South-South, Chief Victor Giadom, who was also at the congress, commended the party delegates for the peaceful exercise. He urged the party members to support the new executive to move the party forward in the state. In his acceptance speech, Okocha said the congress would silence doubters who believe APC cannot peaceful election in the state. He said: “If you know me very well, I’m an emotional person. Our joy is that our members came on their own volition. Nobody cajoled anybody to come and nobody bamboozled anybody to come here for the state primary election. “They came to show their love for the All Progressives Congress. I like to reassure you I’m sure you are seeing the indices and the variables already. “Those who said APC cannot conduct elections lied. APC will conduct and win elections and be in charge of government in Rivers State. On November 21, Parachinar was struck by a horrific massacre when a security convoy, authorised to protect over 700 civilians, came under a brutal attack. More than 100 people were killed, including over 20 women and more than 20 children, between the ages of six months to 13 years. Many civilians were abducted by terrorists. The atrocities left the region in shock. The convoy was traveling to Parachinar to ensure the safe return of citizens after the government- and local terrorists - had set up roadblocks since October 11 which paralysed movement in the area. Eyewitnesses and videos circulating on social media show the horrifying details of the atrocity. Terrorists fired extensively at the convoy and then targeted the bodies, shooting them in the head to ensure that all life had truly left them. Survivors, including children and women, were subjected to unimaginable brutality—many were killed with knives, and their bodies thrown into sewerage drains. Many others are missing. Despite the overwhelming evidence in the form of videos and pictures shared on social media platforms, the authorities have imposed a media and internet blackout across the district, effectively silencing coverage of the tragedy. Kurram's sectarian conflict since 2007 This barbaric act is not an individual incident. Since 2007, Parachinar has been trapped in a tragic cycle of sectarian violence. Terror groups such as the Lashkar-e Jangvi, Dae'sh, The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), and other local militant groups have been carrying out comparable attacks over the past 17 years, killing over 3,000 people and injuring 5,000 more. The city of Parachinar has frequently found itself under siege, where it was either directly attacked or found access to help blocked. The militants would attack ambulances and destroy food supplies. For years, residents of Parachinar have suffered tremendous hardship. Families have lost their loved ones, children have grown up in fear, and mothers continue to mourn their sons and husbands. At least a generation of children growing up watching their fathers and uncles go to fight wars they never asked for, and wept when many of them never returned. Jaun Elia: An Enduring Legacy In Urdu Poetry Ten years after the flare up of violence proved to be especially bloody with multiple attacks. In January 2017, a crowded vegetable market became the site of a horrific terror attack, when a bomb went off killing over 50 people and injuring more than 100. Then in March 2017, 23 people had been killed when a car bomb blew up near an Imambargah, and 70 others were injured. In the aftermath of that blast, protests erupted in the region. But instead of addressing their grievances, the security forces fired on the demonstrators, claiming additional lives. Each attack added to the grief of a community already overwhelmed by loss, so much so that today there is no home in Parachinar without a martyr or a loved one who wasn't injured in the violence. Attacks against convoys are among the most horrific incidents in Parachinar's troubled history. Terrorists have long targetted convoys, slaughtering victims with knives, tearing apart bodies, burning passengers alive, and returning chopped heads to their families. Unable to retrieve the remains of their loved ones, several families felt forced to bury empty graves. Over time, these cruel deeds have been committed repeatedly, leaving the community permanently damaged. The region remains trapped in a brutal cycle of violence, yet media coverage has been limited, and government involvement in securing peace has been negligible. A long struggle for justice On November 8, residents of Parachinar had staged a peaceful march (Walk for Peace) for two days. Their demands included security, justice, and for the government to ensure they remain connected with the rest of the country. Despite facing decades of intermittent and bloody conflict, residents of this region chose to appeal for justice rather than resort to violence. The irony is clear. While this tragic incident took place, the mainstream media remained focused on political events such as the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) impending 'final call' protest in the federal capital and the viral, indecent videos of different TikTokers. Pakistani media and news organisations have opted to cover petty issues for ratings and mostly ignored the tragedy, forcing the residents of Parachinar to mourn in isolation. Not Just A Number: Junaid Hafeez And His Lifelong Struggle Against The Odds The brutal murder in Parachinar provides an acute example of the region's chronic challenges of sectarianism, official disinterest, and extremist brutality Sectarianism and state negligence The state’s silence has been deafening. The government’s failure to secure Parachinar’s citizens and its alleged complicity in failing to tackle militant groups have fueled public outrage. The blocking of roads, the absence of effective security, and the lack of accountability for past incidents have left residents feeling abandoned by their country. Words of condemnation are insufficient to express the depth of loss in Parachinar. The brutal mass murder in Parachinar provides an acute example of the region's chronic challenges of sectarianism, official disinterest, and extremist brutality. Without accountability, this cycle of violence and sectarianism will continue to exist, putting more innocent lives in danger. It is serious that the state breaks its silence, addresses these systemic shortcomings, and prioritises the protection of every one of its citizens. Until then, the people of Parachinar remain trapped in a cycle of fear and violence, yearning for justice and peace. Development for peace As an urban planner, witnessing the difficulties in my hometown Parachinar strengthens my belief in the importance of peace and security and long-term sustainable development. Parachinar's geography, infrastructure, and connection with the rest of the country are important for its development, and the resilience of its people shows their desire for a prospering and peaceful city. No community, nor its people, can completely develop or prosper without a solid foundation of peace. Infrastructure and services are important, but they will only succeed in a conflict-free environment. The scenario in Parachinar currently highlights the need to include safety, unity in society, and involvement of the public in development plans and policies from the perspective of urban planning. Sustainable development includes more than simply constructing roads and buildings; it also requires a commitment to security, democratic governance, and the protection of human rights. Sindhi Comedy Pioneer Qadir Bux Mitho Faces Distress Amid Health Struggle Personal reflections and past experiences The Parachinar Valley was once known for its breathtaking beauty and rich cultural legacy. But of late it has become a symbol of dread and mourning. As a local who has witnessed these endless acts of violence since 2007, I can relate to the terrible toll it has taken on the people of Parachinar. My memories of Parachinar are extremely personal and terrifying, having witnessed my homeland bleed for nearly two decades. In 2007, when I was in the sixth grade studying at the local government school, the first waves of violence erupted. Schools suddenly shut down and all life came to a halt. It took nearly two years for the schools to reopen, but by then, the sounds of guns and rockets had grown so common that as children, we played outside even while missiles bombarded our village. When classes finally resumed, our teachers taught us how to react if a missile struck our school. We learned evacuation exercises in the following order: They instructed us to evacuate in an organised manner, with primary school children going first, followed by the middle and then upper grades. The exercises became a part of our daily routine, a sharp reminder of the vulnerability of life. However, the sense of normalcy was short-lived. Schools would often operate for a month, only to shut down for several months again as the violence escalated. Every trip felt like going to war. My family would bid farewell with prayers and tears, fearing they might not see me again. The journey from home to Peshawar or Islamabad was fraught with uncertainty One particular memory has stayed with me. When I was in the ninth grade, we were having a math exam and one of our greatest fears became reality - a missile struck our village mid-exam. It forced our teachers to evacuate us to a potato field nearly four to five kilometers away. Even after being evacuated, we sat on the ground and continued writing our papers. All the while the sounds of war kept growing closer, surrounding us. We completed our remaining exams in that field. As I grew older, the situation worsened. Roads leading to Parachinar became unsafe and were frequently closed. Visiting home became a perilous journey, undertaken only on Eid or other rare occasions. Every trip felt like going to war. My family would bid me farewell with prayers and tears, fearing they might not see me again. The journey from my home to Peshawar or Islamabad was always fraught with uncertainty. Families anxiously awaited updates until we reached our destinations in Peshawar or Islamabad, safe from the violence in the valley. From Diagnosis To Renewal: Finding Beauty In Struggle One of the most devastating incidents occurred in June 2017, when twin blasts on the 27th of Ramazan ripped through the valley. The bomb attack took place at RP Chowk just before the Iftar time as people prepared for Eid. As rescuers and bystanders rushed to help the victims of the first blast, a second blast occurred, resulting in over 100 deaths and 225 injuries. This tragedy was personal for me as I lost my cousin, Imtiaz Hussain — whom we called Zazi with affection and who worked at the AQH Hospital — who had rushed to help the injured after the first blast. He had rushed to save lives but ended up losing his own in the second blast. Parachinar’s story is one of resilience despite unimaginable suffering. Its people are tired of burying their loved ones and living in constant fear. Generations have grown up knowing nothing but violence, yet the people continue to demand peace and justice, refusing to retaliate with hatred. The region, rich in culture and history, has been left to suffer due to governmental negligence and insufficient efforts to bring lasting peace. Parachinar has been bleeding for over 17 years. Neglected by successive governments, the valley has witnessed countless dark episodes of terrorism, convoy attacks, land disputes, sectarian wars, and targeted blasts. Enough blood has been spilled. The people of Parachinar are tired of burying their loved ones. They deserve the right to live in safety, to dream of a future without fear, and to see an end to this cycle of violence. The time has come for the authorities to take some responsibility. It is also time for the authorities to prioritise development of Parachinar, from infrastructure, and education, to healthcare, and security to restore dignity and hope to the people of this valley. The government must ensure that the tragedies of the past are not repeated and that future generations can live in peace, free from the shadows of war and violence. The region needs urgent attention, with genuine efforts for peace, and justice for the lives lost.
