Given everything that had occurred in the previous hour or two, it made bizarrely perfect sense that Sione Tuipulotu’s grandmother would hand him the Hopetoun Cup trophy after beating the Wallabies at Murrayfield. “She whispered in my ear and said, ‘we got them’,” Tuipulotu said post-game. And it all came after a memorable afternoon at Murrayfield where Tuipulotu – and his 77-year-old grandmother – were in the middle of absolutely everything, much to the delight of an adoring Scottish crowd. But first to re-cap. Born and raised in Melbourne, Tuipulotu played for the Junior Wallabies but couldn’t crack a regular spot for the Rebels in Super Rugby, and so he moved to Scotland to play. The son of a Tongan-Australia father and a mother with Italian-Scottish heritage, Tuipulotu qualified as eligible for Scotland due to his maternal grandmother Jaqueline Thomson, who was born in Greenock in the Scottish lowlands but emigrated to Australia as a child and settled in Frankston. The nuggety centre debuted for Scotland in 2021 and quickly became a fan favourite, and Thomson became something of a cult hero, too, often getting thanked on Scottish rugby social media after a big game by Tuipulotu. The 27-year-old was made captain ahead of the November internationals, and last week, Thomson was flown to Scotland by a sponsor, for the first time in decades, as a surprise for Tuipulotu and his brother Mosese, who both play rugby in Scotland and are close to their gran. Tuipulotu hadn’t seen her in years and after the reunion video did the rounds in Scotland, Thomson was given a rousing cheer when the video – and Thomson – were shown again on the Murrayfield screen on Sunday just before kickoff. But that one was pretty special to score while my gran was here and knowing how much she also wanted to beat Australia.” Divided loyalties have long been dealt with for Tuipulotu, but he appeared to set a physical, no-backward-step tone against Australia for his Scotland teammates. WINNIPEG — Kyle Walters doesn’t believe losing a third consecutive Grey Cup means the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ roster should be blown up. The CFL club’s general manager told reporters at his year-end availability Tuesday that reaching a fifth straight championship game by overcoming lots of injuries was a big accomplishment. Even before Winnipeg’s recent 41-24 Grey Cup loss to the Toronto Argonauts, Walters said he was looking forward to next season. “I was excited for next year based on what I'm looking at, compared to years past, where we've got more young guys that have contributed that are under contract," he said. "We've got more young players in the building. So, the idea of, ‘This is the end of the road. The team is in a free-for-all downward,’ I don’t think is accurate. "We have a good group of guys and we were in a one-point (Grey Cup) game with 10 minutes left ... before things went downhill.” The Blue Bombers started the season 0-4, moved to 2-6 and finished 11-7 to claim the West Division title. Star receiver Dalton Schoen, veteran linebacker Adam Bighill and backup quarterback Chris Streveler all suffered season-ending injuries and are pending free agents. Negotiating with the team’s 27 unsigned players could be impacted by moves across the league among coaches, personnel staff and players such as quarterbacks, Walters said. The Bombers have given permission for offensive coordinator Buck Pierce to speak to the B.C. Lions and Edmonton Elks about those teams’ vacant head-coaching jobs, he said. VIENNA - The UN atomic watchdog's 35-nation Board of Governors passed a resolution on Nov 21 again ordering Iran to urgently improve cooperation with the agency and requesting a "comprehensive" report aimed at pressuring Iran into fresh nuclear talks. Britain, France, Germany and the United States, which proposed the resolution, dismissed as insufficient and insincere a last-minute Iranian move to cap its stock of uranium that is close to weapons-grade. Diplomats said Iran's move was conditional on scrapping the resolution. Iran tends to bristle at such resolutions and has said it would respond in kind to this one. After previous criticism at the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) Board, it has stepped up its nuclear activities and reduced IAEA oversight. China, Russia and Burkina Faso voted against the text, diplomats in the meeting said. Nineteen countries voted in favour and 12 abstained. The IAEA and Iran have long been locked in standoffs on a range of issues including Tehran's failure to explain uranium traces found at undeclared sites, its barring last year of most of the agency's top uranium-enrichment experts on the Iran inspection team, and its refusal to expand IAEA monitoring. The resolution seen by Reuters repeated wording from a November 2022 resolution that it was "essential and urgent" for Iran to explain the uranium traces and let the IAEA take samples as necessary. The resolution in June of this year did the same. The new text asked the IAEA to issue "a comprehensive and updated assessment on the possible presence or use of undeclared nuclear material in connection with past and present outstanding issues regarding Iran's nuclear programme, including a full account of Iran's cooperation with the IAEA on these issues". Western powers hope that report, due by spring 2025, will pressure Iran into negotiations on fresh restrictions on its nuclear activities, albeit less far-reaching ones than in a 2015 deal with major powers that unravelled after then-President Donald Trump withdrew the United States from it in 2018. With Trump due to return to office in January and Iran having taken its uranium enrichment far beyond the deal's limits, it is far from clear whether Trump would back negotiations aimed at setting new limits before the 2015 deal's ones are lifted on "termination day" in October 2025. If no new limits are agreed before then, the report could be used to strengthen the case for so-called "snapback", a process under the 2015 deal where the issue is sent to the UN Security Council and sanctions lifted under the deal can be re-imposed. Last week IAEA chief Rafael Grossi visited Tehran, hoping to convince new Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who is seen as relatively moderate, to improve Iran's cooperation with the agency. Iranian reaction Mr Grossi formally reported to member states on Tuesday that "the possibility of Iran not further expanding its stockpile of uranium enriched up to 60 per cent U-235 was discussed" in his meetings with Iranian officials, and that the IAEA had verified Iran had "begun implementation of preparatory measures". Iran already has enough material enriched to that level, close to the roughly 90 per cent purity that is weapons grade, for four nuclear weapons if enriched further, according to an IAEA yardstick. It has enough material enriched to lower levels for more bombs, but Iran denies seeking nuclear weapons. Mr Grossi said on Nov 20 he had asked Iran to cap that stock of 60 per cent material and Iran had accepted his request. He told a news conference that day that it was "a concrete step in the right direction", suggesting that he felt a resolution could undermine that progress. With the resolution passed, Iran is likely to respond. Moments after the vote, Iranian state media cited a joint statement by the foreign ministry and the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran saying Iran's nuclear chief Mohammad Eslami has issued orders for measures like activating various new and advanced centrifuges, machines that enrich uranium. Veterinary medicine is one of the most in-demand courses available in higher education in Ireland. CAO entry points requirements were about 589 in 2023 and 2024, beyond many students’ capacity. Up to now, the limited number of places in Ireland meant many students had no option but to travel abroad. It is estimated, for example, that at least 120 young Irish people – who do not meet those points requirements – travel abroad each year to study veterinary science at universities in the UK and in cities such as Warsaw in Poland and Budapest in Hungary. If the 80 additional places projected for 2025 materialise, and application patterns remain at current levels, I would expect some students in the 555-560 range to secure a place on one of the three programmes. He said he had no regrets about 2024, even if it seemed like he should have quite a few, since his late arrival and slow start dug a hole for the Giants. He said all the right things about San Francisco, which you would expect from someone who had just experienced free agency and knew he was about to do so again. He also said his 2025 team would be getting a different version of Snell than the one who chose not to pitch on the final weekend in order to protect against a potential injury. "All I want to do is pitch," he said. "It sucks, too, just because I have to be smart, and that's just where I'm at right now, but once I sign that deal it's just pitching, pitching, pitching. I love doing that. That's all I truly care about." Snell said that day that the big deal would be there, and he was right. He said he would sign early this time, and he was right. But his victory is a massive "L" for the Giants . Snell on Tuesday agreed to a contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, a decision he announced on his Instagram page. It was no secret he was trying to prove he could be durable, and perhaps that's part of why the Giants never seemed all that enthused about a reunion. Like Snell, they said all of the polite things, but team officials made it clear late in the year that they expected Snell to find a better deal elsewhere. The Giants for several years have shied away from long-term deals for older starters. At times they have been right (Carlos Rodón) and at times they have instantly had regrets (Kevin Gausman). For all of his brilliance, Snell was on his own program, and that's not the type of pitcher who will convince an organization to change course after years of backing away from safer bets. You can't at all blame Snell for protecting his arm down the stretch, but it certainly was an interesting contrast with Matt Chapman, who directly negotiated with Buster Posey and was annoyed that he couldn't play nine innings the night he was signing his own massive long-term deal . There's no way for the Giants to sugarcoat the fact that this deal came from Los Angeles. The Kansas City Royals made modest additions last year with Seth Lugo and Michael Wacha last offseason and ended up in the MLB playoffs, and there are quite a few veterans who fit that mold this time around. Now the benefit of TDS/TCS deducted on non-salary income (such as bank interest, rent, etc.) will be given while deducting TDS on salary. Earlier, salaried employees had to pay TDS separately on non-salary income along with their salary. The self-driving world was shocked by the not entirely shocking news that General Motors will shut down the robotaxi project of Cruise , absorbing some of the Cruise team to work on in-car technologies like the previously unrelated SuperCruise driver assist system. Cruise had been the clear #2 robotaxi project (at least outside China) until it suspended operations in 2023 after losing its California permits due to a severe incident and cover-up, and GM had spent and was continuing to spend many billions on it. The death of Cruise raises a number of important issues. One is the fate of the project and team, beyond being shrunk and absorbed. It is interesting to note that GM has a (mostly) working robotaxi system but has lost faith in the business case. Tesla has a robocar business (hundreds of thousands of customers have pre-ordered a self-driving system at up to $15,000 and are still waiting for it) but does not have a working self-drive technology. While Tesla fans and Elon Musk have for 8 years believed it was just a year away, and while it has been showing good improvement, it is still quite far from production “bet your life” quality. Tesla’s safety level is around where Waymo was over 8 years ago, and perhaps where Cruise was 6 years ago — though there are those who, with justification, doubt the numbers Cruise claimed. Of course, the Cruise system uses a much more expensive and sophisticated sensor suite, focused on LIDAR, a sensor that Elon Musk has called a “crutch.” For reasons of ego, if nothing else, Tesla would strongly resist such a switch. On the other hand, in the event (which some view as likely, and others do not) that Tesla’s end-to-end ML approach reaches an “AI plateau” and can’t be made to truly self-drive with just cameras, or any time soon, it would be the rational thing to eat a lot of crow and cost and switch over to the approach that Cruise (and Waymo, and Zoox, and Baidu and all the other companies who have working robocars) are using. The sensors are dropping in price (as all electronics do in volume) and could easily be paid for out already collected funds, at least from those who paid fees like $15K, $12K or even less for the pre-order of FSD. (I’m one of them, though I only paid $2K and they would lose money on the few of us in that group.) In addition, Cruise is several years ahead on understanding and setting up all the many logistics elements needed to run a robotaxi service, which Tesla has said they will do. That experience would save Tesla a lot of time, even if they don’t care much for Cruise’s driving technology. Tesla is very set on its path. It’s a shame if Cruise’s work just vanishes into the ether. More than a shame, as it leaves the US with one less player. Waymo is going strong, Zoox is just getting ready to go out, and Motional, also owned by a car company, has shown troubling signals. Waymo will be busy for some time in the USA, and in fact with less competition may expand more slowly. Cruise’s competition definitely provided some prompting for Waymo to act in the past (and vice versa.) This may mean that the Chinese companies will be able to expand into the world with less competition and establish themselves in some countries before other companies get there. It also means it will take longer for prices to come down in the USA, and longer for many other things which get driven by competition. The Cruise Origin was shelved several months ago, and now will never return. This version gave ... [+] special access to the disabled. As noted, this action by GM was not too shocking. I have never felt that traditional car OEMs would lead the way in robocars, but Cruise began as a startup. After the infamous dragging incident of October 2023, the founders were fired, and corporate management stepped in. Even before that, the prior CEO of Cruise was fired over conflict of how much it should be a startup and how much a part of the whole. Role of the DMV After the dragging incident, the California DMV pulled Cruise from the streets. They cited safety issues (such as the dragging) but most feel the primary reason they cited was concern over their short-lived attempt to cover-up the incident, though they never expressed which was more important. There’s a strong argument that this DMV action played a significant role in the death of Cruise, though with no agreement over whether the DMV’s reaction was at the right strength. It’s possible that Cruise would have had another incident before too long without the DMV, though Cruise published numbers claiming they were having fewer crashes than the Uber drivers they were replacing with their robotaxi service. There have been two serious robotaxi/pedestrian encounters. The first involved Uber, whose vehicle killed a pedestrian, with fault placed entirely on the negligent safety driver (not) supervising the vehicle and the procedures by which Uber trained and managed that safety driver. Nonetheless, Uber left the roads and eventually “sold” off their self-driving unit to Aurora. (They traded their robotaxi unit (and cash) for Aurora stock, however that stock is currently doing decently.) The second was Cruise. What this means in both cases of a serious crash is the robocar project received the corporate death penalty, resulting in the loss of billions of effort and investment. In the debate over how much regulation is appropriate for self-driving projects, there is a case that extremely strong deterrents are already in place. While it’s hardly a settled question over whether the DMV’s order is solely or even significantly responsible for the end of Cruise, it should be considered. It was not the intention of the DMV to end Cruise, of course. Their mission is to improve road safety. Even if Cruise’s claim of superior safety was false, they were on a path to providing major improvements to road safety over time. There’s a good case that the DMV’s actions have seriously worsened road safety, both because of what Cruise would have done, and because of what extra competition would also have done. When I write “seriously,” I mean very significant numbers. While today’s robocar fleets are tiny, this means any mistakes they make will be small in magnitude. They will be—they must be—significantly safer than the human drivers they replace once they start driving in large volumes. That future Cruise fleet, had it come to be, and been a success, would very probably have prevented literally millions of future crashes. While the DMV has to do its job, this number, and its application to their core mission, should not leave their minds. Fortunately, all is not lost. Some of the technology developed at Cruise will be used to make GM’s regular cars safer, or at least that’s the plan, as it was when Ford shut down Argo. Much will still be lost.
