Pope Francis kicks off a yearlong Jubilee that will test his stamina and Rome's patience VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis has opened the great Holy Door of St. Peter's Basilica. The ceremony kicks off the 2025 Holy Year. It's a celebration of the Catholic Church that is expected to draw some 32 million pilgrims to Rome. And it will test the pope’s stamina and the ability of the Eternal City to welcome them. This begins the Christmas Eve Mass. The ceremony inaugurates the once-every-25-year tradition of a Jubilee. Francis has dedicated the 2025 Jubilee to the theme of hope. Bethlehem marks a second subdued Christmas Eve during the war in Gaza BETHLEHEM, West Bank (AP) — Bethlehem is marking another somber Christmas Eve under the shadow of war in Gaza. Manger Square lacked its usual festive lights and crowds of tourists on Tuesday. Instead, the area outside the Nativity Church was quiet. The church was built atop the spot where Jesus is believed to have been born. The war, the violence in the occupied West Bank it has spurred and the lack of festivities has deeply hurt Bethlehem's economy. The town relies heavily on Christmas tourism. The economy in the West Bank was already reeling because of restrictions placed on laborers preventing them from entering Israel during the war. Heavy travel day starts with brief grounding of all American Airlines flights WASHINGTON (AP) — American Airlines briefly grounded flights nationwide due to a technical problem just as the Christmas travel season kicked into overdrive and winter weather threatened more potential problems for those planning to fly or drive. Government regulators cleared American flights to get airborne Tuesday about one hour after the Federal Aviation Administration ordered a national ground stop, which prevented planes from taking off. American said in an email that the problem was caused by an issue with a vendor technology that maintains its flight operating system. Aviation analytics company Cirium said flights were delayed across American’s major hubs, with only 37% leaving on time. Nineteen flights were cancelled. Middle East latest: Israel expels patients from a hospital in Gaza TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — The Palestinian Health Ministry says Israeli soldiers raided a hospital in isolated northern Gaza after forcing all the patients and most of the doctors to leave. The Israeli military confirmed its troops had entered the Indonesian Hospital in the town of Jabaliya on Tuesday, as part of an operation searching for Hamas fighters. Winter is hitting the Gaza Strip and many of the nearly 2 million Palestinians displaced by the devastating 15-month war are struggling to protect themselves from the wind, cold and rain. In the occupied West Bank, the Palestinian city of Bethlehem was marking a somber Christmas Eve under the shadow of war in Gaza, with most festivities cancelled and crowds of tourists absent. Caitlin Clark honored as AP Female Athlete of the Year following her impact on women's sports Caitlin Clark has been named the AP Female Athlete of the Year after raising the profile of women’s basketball to unprecedented levels in both college and the WNBA. She led Iowa to the national championship game, was the top pick in the WNBA draft and captured rookie of the year honors in the league. Fans packed sold-out arenas and millions of television viewers followed her journey on and off the court. Clark's exploits also put other women's sports leagues in the spotlight. A group of 74 sports journalists from AP and its members voted on the award. Other athletes who received votes included Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles and boxer Imane Khelif. Clark’s only the fourth women’s basketball player to win the award since it was first given in 1931. Major storm pounds California's central coast, blamed for man's death and partially collapsing pier SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (AP) — A major storm has pounded California’s central coast bringing flooding and high surf that was blamed for fatally trapping a man beneath debris on a beach and later partially collapsing a pier, tossing three people into the Pacific Ocean. Some California cities have ordered beachfront homes and hotels to evacuate early Monday afternoon. Forecasters have warned that storm swells would continue to increase throughout the day. Medellin Cartel victims demand truth and justice as cartel boss Fabio Ochoa walks free in Colombia BOGOTÁ, Colombia (AP) — The return of the notorious drug trafficker Fabio Ochoa to Colombia, following his deportation from the United States, has reopened old wounds among the victims of the Medellin cartel, with some expressing their dismay at the decision of Colombian authorities to let the former mafia boss walk free. Some of the cartel victims said on Tuesday that they are hoping the former drug lord will at least cooperate with ongoing efforts by human rights groups to investigate one of the most violent periods of Colombia’s history, and demanded that Colombian prosecutors also take Ochoa in for questioning. Man arraigned on murder charges in NYC subway death fanned flames with a shirt, prosecutors say NEW YORK (AP) — Prosecutors say a man accused of burning a woman to death inside a New York City subway train used a shirt to fan the flames, causing her to become engulfed. The suspect, identified by police as Sebastian Zapeta, was arraigned in Brooklyn criminal court on Tuesday. He faces murder charges that could put him in prison for life. Federal immigration officials say 33-year-old Zapeta is a Guatemalan citizen who entered the U.S. illegally after being deported in 2018. The apparently random attack occurred Sunday morning on a stationary F train at the Coney Island station in Brooklyn. Amsterdam court sentences 5 men over violence linked to Ajax-Maccabi soccer game THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — An Amsterdam District Court has issued sentences of up to six months in jail against 5 men who were involved in violent disorder after a soccer match between the Dutch club Ajax and Israel’s Maccabi Tel Aviv in November. The riots caused an international outcry and accusations of deliberate anti-Semitic attacks. The violence following a UEFA Europa League match left 5 people in hospital. More than 60 suspects were detained. The court on Tuesday sentenced one man to 6 months in prison, another to 2 1/2 months, two to 1 month and one to 100 hours of community service.

Those being probed included artificial Intelligence chatbot startup Character.AI and fourteen other platforms like Reddit, Instagram and Discord, the Texas attorney general added. WHY IT’S IMPORTANT Tech platforms have come under increasing scrutiny over their impact on children. Top U.S. social media platforms made an estimated $11 billion in advertising revenue from users younger than 18 in 2022, according to a Harvard study published last year. U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy last year warned that young people using social media risked suffering body image issues, disordered eating, poor sleep quality and low self-esteem, especially among adolescent girls. KEY QUOTE “Technology companies are on notice that my office is vigorously enforcing Texas’ strong data privacy laws,” Paxton said. CONTEXT Social media companies have said they will work with officials to protect young users, and say they have introduced new tools designed to protect teens online, including parental control features. The firms had no immediate comment on Thursday. Paxton’s statement said the probes would focus on the platforms’ compliance with two Texas laws – the Securing Children Online through Parental Empowerment (SCOPE) Act and the Texas Data Privacy and Security Act (TDPSA). The SCOPE Act bans digital service providers from sharing, disclosing, or selling a minor’s personal identifying information without permission from the child’s parent or legal guardian. The legislation requires firms to provide parents with tools to manage and control the privacy settings on their child’s account. The TDPSA imposes notice and consent requirements on companies that collect and use minors’ personal data, Paxton’s office said. Wahab Haruna and supported by the Whole House during today’s plenary presided over by Speaker, Oludaisi Elemide, at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta. The bill was later read and adopted clause by clause before the Committee of the whole house, after which the motion for the third reading was moved by the Majority Leader, Yusuf Sheriff, seconded by the Minority Leader Lukman Adeleye and supported by all the lawmakers through a unanimous voice vote, while the Clerk and Head of the Legislative Service, Sakiru Adebakin read the bill for the third time before the State lawmakers. Also, Ogun State Security Network (Amotekun) had its budget proposal increased from N765m to N 1.575bn ; while that of the States Environment Protection Agency moved from N252m to N262m, just as the State Library Board 2025 budget proposal amongst others was jacked up from N147m to N177m.Wicked star Ariana Grande has said she and Cynthia Erivo were “insufferable” and “horrible” in the build-up to the film’s release. Grande, 31, also said her co-star was a “brilliant gift of a human being” while being interviewed by Gladiator star Paul Mescal for US news outlet Variety. Mescal told the singer and actor: “I’m watching you guys in the press tour. You’re obviously in love with each other.” To which she replied: “Insufferable. Yes. We’re horrible. It’s bad.” The 7 Rings singer plays Glinda, while her 37-year-old co-star plays Elphaba, in the film which is an adaption of the musical stage show of the same name and is set in The Land Of Oz before the events of The Wizard Of Oz. Their interviews for the film, which have seen the two being emotional towards one another and holding hands, have gone viral on social media. Speaking about Erivo, Grande said: “Cynthia is just an absolute brilliant gift of a human being. I think we tried to keep the pressure out of the room, obviously, as much as possible.” She also said she had not had any read throughs with her co-star before joining the cast. Grande said: “We never chemistry read together, it was three rounds for me, and I read with two different actresses. “I stayed for three and a half hours the final day, and I had cried so much. “We did Popular, Defying Gravity, (and) For Good (songs from the film), and I left my lashes on the mirror, because I left everything else in the room.” The film follows Elphaba, who is misunderstood because of her green skin, as she forges an unlikely friendship with Glinda, a student with a desire for popularity. Bullying of the green-skinned witch saw the movie, which also stars Peter Dinklage, Jeff Goldblum and Jonathan Bailey, given a PG rating by the British Board Of Film Classification (BBFC) for “discrimination”.Dunxin Financial Holdings Limited Announces Planned ADS Ratio Change

live Updated 3m ago Heading into championship week The fifth College Football Playoff rankings of the 2024 season will be released today. The final rankings will be released on Sunday, Dec. 8. So who will be in the top 12 tonight? Who's No. 13? Check back throughout the day for our staff predictions, analysis and more. Time: 7 p.m. TV: ESPN Austin Mock's CFP projections: Austin's season-long updates can be found here . Power 4 teams shouldn't be punished I'm against the idea that any Power 4 team should be knocked out of the bracket for losing in its conference championship game. For me, this puts SMU at the heart of the most important discussion this week. If Clemson beats the Mustangs on Saturday, the ACC is set to steal the lone remaining at-large bid that could otherwise go to a team among the SEC's group of three-loss contenders. Advertisement What will committee do with Alabama, Miami? The College Football Playoff field is mostly set. The bubble isn’t very big, but the central debate heading into the conference championship games seems clear: Will the committee elect to place three-loss Alabama into the field ahead of two-loss Miami — or even SMU if the Mustangs lose the ACC title game against Clemson? Continue reading here. GO FURTHER College Football Playoff Bubble Watch: What will committee do with Alabama and Miami? Day’s Michigan problem is worse than Ohio State fans feared COLUMBUS, Ohio — It’s become an annual cliche from Ryan Day when he says the keys to beating Michigan are running the ball and winning the turnover battle. He said it last year after Ohio State lost in Ann Arbor. He said it again after Saturday’s 13-10 loss to Michigan, his fourth in a row in the rivalry and one of the biggest upsets in series history. “We have to run the ball, especially in this game,” said Day, who’s now 1-4 against the Wolverines. “We weren’t able to do that. We tried a couple different schemes, couldn’t quite get into a rhythm on that, and that ultimately, along with turnovers and missed field goals, was the difference in the game.” Continue reading here. GO FURTHER Ryan Day’s Michigan problem is even worse than Ohio State fans feared Why does Day even want Ohio State job? Adam Cairns / USA Today Network via Imagn Images COLUMBUS, Ohio — It’s an image that will remain in Ohio State lore for many years to come: Head coach Ryan Day, minutes after his No. 2 Buckeyes lost, inexplicably, to unranked Michigan 13-10, in a daze as players from both teams fought at midfield. He asked a player returning to the sideline, “What happened?” It’s a big-picture question that will remain in lore, too. Day is 66-10 and has had four top-five finishes in the coaches poll in five seasons as Ohio State’s full-time head coach. Ohio State is one of three teams to finish in the AP top 10 each of the past five years, along with Alabama and Georgia. The Buckeyes have the second-best win percentage since 2019, behind Georgia. Day has put his team in the College Football Playoff three times since 2019; he’s made a New Year’s Six bowl his other seasons, and that streak will continue this year. It is a truly remarkable record. Continue reading here. GO FURTHER Would Ohio State fire Ryan Day? A better question to ask: Would Day even want this job? Arizona State deserves attention TUCSON, Ariz. — The Arizona State Sun Devils gathered at midfield, an enormous mass of maroon and gold celebrating Saturday’s 49-7 win against rival Arizona at Arizona Stadium. Suddenly, Cam Skattebo broke from the pack, lifting the Territorial Cup in his right hand and charging for the stands where Arizona State fans awaited. Skattebo had just rushed for 177 yards and three touchdowns, lifting No. 16 Arizona State to its 10th win and a place in the Big 12 Championship Game, an improbable tale for both the bruising running back and the program he represents. Heisman Trophy ballots are sent out on Monday. Like his team, Skattebo began the season as an incredible long shot. Also, like his team, Skattebo has shown he belongs. “He has to be one of the best backs in yards from scrimmage in all of Power 4 football,’’ Arizona State coach Kenny Dillingham said outside the locker room. “How are there many players more impactful than him and what he’s done for this program, picked dead last to playing potentially in the conference championship?” Continue reading here. GO FURTHER Arizona State will play for Big 12 championship, and its overlooked star deserves Heisman consideration Rise of Tennessee and fall of Miami Another week brought more chaos at the top of the college football world. And when one or two of the top teams in the country fall, that means others rise in the College Football Playoff race. Continue reading here. GO FURTHER College Football Playoff odds stock watch: The rise of Tennessee and fall of Miami Advertisement SEC vs. ACC will be interesting Tonight is the night ... kind of. The first and last CFP rankings are the most intriguing, but tonight's will be close and will set the table for championship week. There are plenty of storylines to delve into, but the biggest in my mind: the unspoken battle between the ACC and SEC. We looking at the SEC and Big Ten as the big two in the sport on the field, but who gets into the Playoff will be a Southern battle: Will the committee give a three-loss Alabama/South Carolina/Ole Miss a legitimate path? Or will it give Miami grace after a second loss and/or confirm SMU's status in the 12-team field regardless of a loss on Saturday? Get ready for some generational lobbying this week from commissioners Greg Sankey (SEC) and Jim Phillips (ACC), athletic directors, coaches and players on both sides. Clemson somehow still has a shot Charles LeClaire / Imagn Images Oregon Texas Boise State Clemson Penn State Notre Dame Ohio State Georgia Tennessee Indiana SMU Arizona State How wild has this college football season been? Clemson lost 17-14 to South Carolina on the last day of the regular season, only to earn a spot in the ACC title game thanks to Syracuse’s 42-38 come-from-behind victory against Miami that knocked out the Hurricanes. This is nowhere near Dabo Swinney’s best Clemson team — he reached the College Football Playoff in the four-team era six times and won two national championships. But Swinney and Clemson (9-3) have a chance to earn a top-four seed in the 12-team Playoff field as one of the highest-ranked conference champions with a victory against SMU (11-1) in the ACC Championship Game. What to do with Buckeyes? The major talking point this week surrounds Ohio State. What will the committee do about a team that lost as a 20-point favorite at home but has been No. 2 all season? On one hand, Ohio State's loss is a bad one, but it does have two top-10 wins and a one-point loss at Oregon. It makes sense for Ohio State to drop to seven or eight, but there seems to be a growing debate around whether Tennessee should jump Ohio State for the final hosting spot. Either way, Ohio State is going to be nervous for the next week because nobody wants to go on the road in the first round. How Alabama kept CFP hopes alive TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — It was the biggest question all week: Which Alabama team would show up against Auburn? The dominant team that has flashed at times this season or the flat team that’s prone to maddening losses, like Oklahoma last week. The answer was somewhere in between in its 28-14 win in the Iron Bowl, but the important thing is that Alabama extended its winning streak over the Tigers to five straight. Then, a few upsets opened the door just a little bit more for a possible College Football Playoff bid. Continue reading here. GO FURTHER The good and bad in Alabama’s Iron Bowl win over Auburn: Crimson Tide film study Who’s in? Who’s safe? Who’s on bubble? We have seen college football teams back into the College Football Playoff, losing their last regular-season or conference title game and still earning a spot in the four-team field. This happened to Alabama in 2017 after losing the Iron Bowl and to Ohio State after it lost to Michigan in 2022. That was the same season TCU of the Big 12 became the first team to lose its conference championship game (to Kansas State) and still get in. In all those cases, that loss was the team’s only loss. Now with a 12-team CFP, backing into the Playoff has a whole new meaning. Looking at you, Ohio State (10-2). Miami (10-2), too. What we learned about the College Football Playoff in the last full weekend of the regular season is we have a pretty good idea of who will be in the College Football Playoff heading into championship weekend. Continue reading here. GO FURTHER What we learned about the College Football Playoff: Who’s in? Who’s safe? Who’s on bubble? Advertisement What does top 12 look like? Oregon Texas Notre Dame Georgia Tennessee Penn State SMU Ohio State Indiana Boise State Alabama Miami Texas finally has a resume that can live up to where the committee has been putting it, while Georgia and Tennessee have the quality wins to overcome Penn State's lack of bad losses. Per these rankings, projecting the highest-ranked team in each league winning the conference title games, you’ve got Oregon, Texas, SMU and Boise State as your top four seeds. That leaves first-round matchups of No. 12 Arizona State at No. 5 Notre Dame, No. 11 Alabama at No. 6 Georgia, No. 10 Indiana at No. 7 Tennessee and No. 9 Ohio State at No. 8 Penn State. But that also means Penn State and Georgia could fall after title-game losses. Also, sorry Hurricanes, you’re out. Could the ACC get 3 teams? Jerome Miron / Imagn Images Clemson has no shot to get into the top 12 except for the automatic berth that comes with winning the ACC Championship game on Saturday. The Tigers, who have three losses and no real good wins, will get their shot as bid-stealers against SMU. That's a rare role for Clemson, which has been the favorite in the ACC title games it has played in. But if Clemson wins that game, could the conference somehow get three teams in the College Football Playoff field? SMU shouldn't be penalized for a loss and should make the field either way. Could Miami sneak in? Or will all this be moot and the ACC gets only one spot? Either way, the ACC will be interesting, which it usually is not. Week 14 projections My pool of teams did not change from last week to this week, but Ohio State’s inexplicable home loss to Michigan and Miami’s loss at Syracuse certainly shook up the seeding. For weeks I had the Buckeyes winning the Big Ten title game and landing the No. 1 seed. Now, I have them as the No. 9 seed, playing a first-round road game at No. 8 seed Tennessee. Though it’s certainly possible those two 10-2 teams would be flipped. Continue reading here. Aston Villa boss Unai Emery has set his sights on automatic qualification to the last 16 of the Champions League after a 3-2 win at RB Leipzig. Ross Barkley’s 85th-minute goal gave them victory in Germany after goals from John McGinn and Jhon Duran early in each half were cancelled out by Lois Openda and Christoph Baumgartner. That sent them up to third in the new league phase of the competition ahead of Wednesday’s games and with matches against Monaco and Celtic to come, Villa have an excellent chance of finishing in the top eight. Job done... in the end 😅 — Aston Villa (@AVFCOfficial) That would mean they would avoid a play-off round to make it through to the last 16 and Emery says that is the target. “Today was key. Juventus at home, we were thinking more to win but in the end we accepted the draw because it was important for a point to be more or less in the top 24,” he told Amazon Prime. “Today was a match we were thinking at the beginning was key to be a contender to be in the top eight with the last two matches to be played. “It is going to be difficult and we have to get some more points but we now have the possibility to achieve this option. “We are going to enjoy and try to get top eight but we have to be happy because we are in the top 24 and maybe even the top 16. “We weren’t contenders in the beginning to get there but now we have to accept it.” Leipzig, who are flying high near the top of the Bundesliga, are out after losing all six matches. They did pose a threat to Villa, who inflicted some of their own problems on themselves, notably a rare gaffe from goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez for Openda’s equaliser. But Emery was happy with his side’s performance. “I try to enjoy and always we want to improve and sometimes it is hard but today the team were performing well, playing seriously and I was enjoying it,” he added. “We tried to overcome the mistakes we made and we did. More or less we were playing consistently. One mistake and they score but then we played very well. “Champions League is very difficult and we have to expect that every team playing at home are feeling strong. We played with consistency and domination.”Lowe scores career-high 22, leads Pitt over LSU 74-63 in Greenbrier Tip-OffHow major US stock indexes fared Tuesday, 12/3/2024

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks tiptoed to more records amid a mixed Tuesday of trading, tacking a touch more onto what’s already been a stellar year so far. The S&P 500 edged up by 2 points, or less than 0.1%, to set an all-time high for the 55th time this year. It’s climbed in 10 of the last 11 days and is on track for one of its best years since the turn of the millennium. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 76 points, or 0.2%, while the Nasdaq composite added 0.4% to its own record set a day earlier. AT&T rose 4.6% after it boosted its profit forecast for the year. It also announced a $10 billion plan to send cash to its investors by buying back its own stock, while saying it expects to authorize another $10 billion of repurchases in 2027. On the losing end of Wall Street was U.S. Steel, which fell 8%. President-elect Donald Trump reiterated on social media that he would not let Japan’s Nippon Steel take over the iconic Pennsylvania steelmaker. Nippon Steel announced plans last December to buy the Pittsburgh-based steel producer for $14.1 billion in cash, raising concerns about what the transaction could mean for unionized workers, supply chains and U.S. national security. Earlier this year, President Joe Biden also came out against the acquisition. Tesla sank 1.6% after a judge in Delaware reaffirmed a previous ruling that the electric car maker must revoke Elon Musk’s multibillion-dollar pay package. The judge denied a request by attorneys for Musk and Tesla’s corporate directors to vacate her ruling earlier this year requiring the company to rescind the unprecedented pay package. All told, the S&P 500 rose 2.73 points to 6,049.88. The Dow fell 76.47 to 44,705.53, and the Nasdaq composite gained 76.96 to 19,480.91. In the bond market, Treasury yields held relatively steady after a report showed U.S. employers were advertising slightly more job openings at the end of October than a month earlier. Continued strength there would raise optimism that the economy could remain out of a recession that many investors had earlier worried was inevitable. The yield on the 10-year Treasury rose to 4.23% from 4.20% from late Monday. Yields have seesawed since Election Day amid worries that Trump’s preferences for lower tax rates and bigger tariffs could spur higher inflation along with economic growth. But traders are still confident the Federal Reserve will cut its main interest rate again at its next meeting in two weeks. They’re betting on a nearly three-in-four chance of that, according to data from CME Group. Lower rates can give the economy more juice, but they can also give inflation more fuel. The key report this week that could guide the Fed’s next move will arrive on Friday. It’s the monthly jobs report , which will show how many workers U.S. employers hired and fired during November. It could be difficult to parse given how much storms and strikes distorted figures in October. Based on trading in the options market, Friday’s jobs report appears to be the biggest potential market mover until the Fed announces its next decision on interest rates Dec. 18, according to strategists at Barclays Capital. In financial markets abroad, the value of South Korea’s currency fell 1.1% against the U.S. dollar following a frenetic night where President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law and then later said he’d lift it after lawmakers voted to reject military rule. Stocks of Korean companies that trade in the United States also fell, including a 1.6% drop for SK Telecom. Japan’s Nikkei 225 jumped 1.9% to help lead global markets. Some analysts think Japanese stocks could end up benefiting from Trump’s threats to raise tariffs , including for goods coming from China . Trade relations between the U.S. and China took another step backward after China said it is banning exports to the U.S. of gallium, germanium, antimony and other key high-tech materials with potential military applications. The counterpunch came swiftly after the U.S. Commerce Department expanded the list of Chinese technology companies subject to export controls to include many that make equipment used to make computer chips, chipmaking tools and software. The 140 companies newly included in the so-called “entity list” are nearly all based in China. In China, stock indexes rose 1% in Hong Kong and 0.4% in Shanghai amid unconfirmed reports that Chinese leaders would meet next week to discuss planning for the coming year. Investors are hoping it may bring fresh stimulus to help spur growth in the world’s second-largest economy. In France, the CAC 40 rose 0.3% amid continued worries about politics in Paris , where the government is battling over the budget. AP Business Writers Yuri Kageyama and Matt Ott contributed.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Vandals torched a car and sprayed graffiti with anti-Israel slogans on Wednesday in a Sydney suburb that is home to Australia’s largest Jewish community. Officials condemned the attack as antisemitic. The incident in the eastern suburb of Woollahra came after federal police this week established a task force to investigate increasing antisemitic crimes across the country. Police said they are searching for two suspects, aged between 15 and 20, who were seen at the scene of the attack, wearing face masks, or balaclavas, and dark clothing. Police cordoned off the scene of the attack. It wasn’t immediately known what the graffiti said. Last week’s arson at a Melbourne synagogue marked an escalation in targeted attacks in Australia since the war began between Israel and the militant Hamas group started over a year ago in the Gaza Strip. Cars and buildings have previously been vandalized and torched across Australia in protests inspired by the war. This week, authorities declared the attack on Melbourne’s Adass Israel Synagogue a terrorist attack, which increases the resources and information available to investigators. Also this week, federal police announced Special Operation Avalite to target those behind antisemitic attacks around the country — including the arson at the Melbourne synagogue, the attack on Jewish lawmaker Josh Burns’ Melbourne office in June, and an attack last month on a car in Woollahra. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the Woollahra attack on Wednesday as an “outrage” and a “hate crime.” “It is another antisemitic attack and all Australians must condemn it,” Albanese told Australian Broadcasting Corp. “I stand with the Jewish community and unequivocally condemn this attack. There’s no place for antisemitism in this country or anywhere else for that matter.” He said he had been briefed by Australian Federal Police Commissioner Reece Kershaw on the attack and would soon be briefed by Special Operation Avalite officials, and rejected allegations the attack could be a criticism of Israel rather than Jews. Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. “This isn’t an attack on a government, this is an attack on people because they happen to be Jewish,” Albanese said. “The idea that we take a conflict overseas and bring it here is something that is quite contrary to what Australia was built on.” Government opponents argue that Albanese has been too slow to call out rising antisemitism for fear of alienating pro-Palestinian groups. Opposition Sen. Jane Hume said she knew a Jewish couple who were considering moving from Australia to Israel because they would feel safer there, despite the raging Mideast wars. “Because the government has prevaricated, because it has used weasel words and wishy-washy language, it does seem that those that are committing these offenses have been emboldened if not enabled by a government that has failed to take leadership,” Hume said. The Simon Wiesenthal Center, a Jewish global human rights organization, issued a travel warning on Tuesday, urging Jews to “exercise extreme caution” in Australia as “a result of the failure of Australian authorities to stand up against persistent demonization, harassment and violence against Jews and Jewish institutions in Australia.” Advertisement Advertisement
