Each winter, especially in our snowy climate, driving accidents become a common cause of emergency department visits. Vehicle operators, passengers, and pedestrians are all at heightened risk in adverse weather, when snowy or icy road conditions exist. According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), in the United States, motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death for people age 1‒54. Crashes happen year-round from factors such as excessive speed, distractions, impairment, and failure to wear seat belts. Add snow and ice, plus dark and unfamiliar roads to the equation, and the risk becomes much higher. Without proper winter tires with substantial tread or too much trust in the technology featured in most modern cars, drivers often fail to recognize that vehicle control is substantially affected by winter conditions. It’s good to take a vigilant approach every time you get behind the wheel this winter. Also, understand that just because you are taking all of the necessary precautions, doesn’t mean your fellow roadsters are. The CDC offers the following safety tips for all drivers: Ï Do not drive when you are impaired by alcohol and/or drugs, and do not allow your family members or friends to drive while impaired. Impairment by any type of legal or illicit drug—not just alcohol—can increase crash risk. If you drink alcohol and/or use drugs, designate a sober driver, call a taxi, or use a ride share service to protect yourself and others on the road. Ï Avoid distractions while driving, such as using your cell phone to text, email, or access social media. Sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for at least five seconds. At 55 miles per hour, that is like driving the length of an entire football field with your eyes closed. Safe driving requires your full attention. Ï Check the weather conditions before you head out on the road. Make sure to drive at a speed that is safe for road and weather conditions. The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) recommends to decrease your speed 5 to 10 mph on wet roads, reduce speed by half the speed limit on packed snow, and if you encounter or suspect ice—slow to a crawl. While Tahoe roads will often be hazardous with snow and ice this winter, motor vehicle deaths and injuries can be prevented. Make safety a priority when you decide to travel in adverse conditions. Always buckle up, drive at safe speeds, and never drive impaired to help everyone stay safe on the road during the winter season. ______________________________________________________________________________ Dr. Kim Evans is a board-certified surgeon and the Trauma Program Director at Barton Health. The lawmaker representing Ilorin South in the Kwara State House of Assembly (KWSHA), Yusuf Maryam Aladi, on Sunday supported and empowered over 1,000 residents, including widows and artisans. She put the monetary worth of the exercise at well over N20 million. The lawmaker gave out 20 grinding machines, 20 chest freezers, 20 dryers, 20 catering equipment, 100 hair clippers, generating sets, 20 welding machines, 20 solar panels, 20 sewing machines, and cooking gas to male and female artisans. At the event held at the Bishop Smith Secondary School, Ilorin, the legislator also supported over 500 widows with cash and food items, including semovita, salt, and N10,000 each, as part of her widow support. According to her, no fewer than 100 pupils benefit from her education scholarships with due support and encouragement from Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq. The guest speaker, Lawal Olohungbebe, urged the youths to be wary of their contributions to the nation’s economy. Speaking on the title “Contributions of artisans to nation building,” Olohungbebe charged artisans to utilize the trending technology to enhance their productivity. According to him, networking should be encouraged among artisans, as well as improved customer-relationship practices. “Your integrity in business is unequalled and unparalleled; it is supposed to be the pride of every artisan,” he urged, adding that promptness and dedication to duty matter in business activities. The chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Sunday Fagbemi, while commending Aladi, said it is not always easy to give back to the source, describing the beneficiaries as the source. Fagbemi advised the beneficiaries not to sell the items, saying: “Please don’t, for the sake of the ravaging economic hardship, sell these items. Empower yourselves with them; the donor has good intentions for you to break the shackles of poverty.”Pentagon Sends Anti-Drone Tech to New Jersey After Sightings

Against this backdrop, Kim's speech to top officials "clarified the strategy for the toughest anti-US counteraction to be launched aggressively", the report said without providing details. The meeting reviewed the response to widespread flooding earlier this year, and also included a vow to boost ties with "friendly" countries. Such party meetings, and Kim's speeches to officials, are typically used by Pyongyang to make key policy announcements. The KCNA report comes after Seoul's military claimed that more than a thousand North Korean soldiers had been killed or wounded since they entered combat in Ukraine as part of a military deal between Pyongyang and Moscow. North Korea and Russia have strengthened their military ties since Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. A landmark defence pact between Pyongyang and Moscow -- signed in June when Russian President Vladimir Putin North Korea -- came into force this month. Putin hailed it as a "breakthrough document". North Korean state media said Friday that Putin sent a New Year's message to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, saying, "the bilateral ties between our two countries have been elevated after our talks in June in Pyongyang". Ukraine's allies have called Pyongyang's growing involvement in Russia's war in Ukraine a "dangerous expansion" of the conflict. (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel )
ATLANTA (AP) — Even the woeful NFC South, where no team has a winning record, can't hide the Atlanta Falcons' offensive shortcomings. Three straight setbacks, including an ugly 17-13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, has left the Falcons 6-6 and feeling the pressure. Only a tiebreaker advantage over Tampa Bay has kept the Falcons atop the division. Javascript is required for you to be able to read premium content. A fateful night in Monterey: Drinking, conservative banter, sexual assault allegationsDame Prue Leith has defended Gregg Wallace over allegations about his behaviour, stating that he should not be dismissed. The presenter, who has temporarily stepped back from hosting the BBC cooking show, is facing historical misconduct allegations which are currently under external review. The 60-year-old also confronts new harassment accusations, including inappropriate touching of a woman at an event and making unwanted physical contact with another while filming a separate show. His legal team has categorically denied that he engages in sexually harassing behaviour, and Wallace himself has strongly refuted all allegations levelled against him. Great British Bake Off's Dame Prue has voiced her opinion on the matter, asserting that while Wallace shouldn't lose his job, TV producers and executives need to enforce strict behavioural standards for presenters. Speaking on Times Radio, the 84-year-old Dame Prue stated: "I'm a great believer in due process... He should just stay off social media because he's just digging himself deeper and deeper into a hole because he's too insensitive to understand how offensive it is. But that's his problem, that he's insensitive. He hasn't, that I can see, disobeyed the law." Dame Prue has voiced her opinion on the recent controversy, stating: "I don't believe people should be cancelled or sacked. I can see why you would ask somebody to step aside while they investigate things, which I suppose is what they're doing. But I think the tragedy in this is that I bet you Gregg has no idea what he's done wrong", reports the Mirror . However, while she doesn't advocate for Gregg's dismissal, she feels television executives could be firmer with their talent. She elaborated in her discussion with Cathy Newman, criticising TV chiefs for being "weak" in handling stars like Gregg Wallace. She remarked: "Yes, very weak. For goodness sake, they can replace Gregg Wallace. They can replace anybody. So they should be tough with their presenters. They should be very clear about whatever the rules are." Further to her commentary, Dame Prue added: "I do think they've been weak. But I don't want to say that he should be sacked because I don't know what the crime is." Accusations against Gregg have surfaced, alleging inappropriate behaviour including groping an individual's reara serious claim tantamount to sexual assault. The negative atmosphere reportedly instigated by Wallace has also been echoed by MasterChef staff and past contestants, including notable faces such as Emma Kennedy and Kirsty Wark. Adding to the charges, Gregg's own ghostwriter Shannon Kyle voiced allegations on Victoria Derbyshire's NewsNight program on Wednesday. Wallace has been accused of making a British Sign Language interpreter sign inappropriate phrases. An attendee at the BBC Good Food Show alleged that Wallace asked the interpreter to sign "big boobs" and "sexy bum" at the NEC Arena in Birmingham in 2012. "There was a British Sign Language interpreter there and he wandered over to her at one point and just said: 'Do you have to sign everything I say? ' And she said yes, and then he just started saying, 'big boobs', 'sexy bum' this sort of thing, in order to get her to sign it. It was like he could control her, I suppose," the attendee told the Guardian. Gregg is facing allegations from 13 individuals across various shows over a 17-year period, as revealed by BBC News on Thursday, with many more sharing their experiences since. The presenter is "committed to fully cooperating throughout the process" during the BBC 's investigation, according to a statement from Banijay UK, the show's production company. He has also stepped down from his role on the show during the investigation. On Sunday morning, Gregg took to social media to dispute the accusations, claiming they came from "middle-class women of a certain age", leading Ulrika to comment that his "ignorance and arrogance knows no bounds". He later issued a heartfelt apology and announced that he would be taking a break from social media.US confirms billions in chips funds to Samsung, Texas Instruments
The mystery surrounding at least one of the unexplained drones causing Americans to look toward the night sky in recent days was solved late Saturday evening, when Boston police arrested two men for flying their unmanned aerial device too close to Logan Airport. According to police, 42-year-old Robert Duffy of Charlestown and 32-year-old Jeremy Folcik of Bridgewater were arrested Saturday on Long Island, after officials noticed the drone on their monitoring systems. “The incident began earlier that evening, at 4:30 p.m., when a Boston Police Officer specializing in real-time crime surveillance detected an Unmanned Aircraft System operating dangerously close to Logan International Airport. Leveraging advanced UAS monitoring technology, the Officer identified the drone’s location, altitude, flight history, and the operators’ position on Long Island,” the Boston Police Department said in a Sunday statement. After rallying officials from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the Massachusetts State Police, the Joint Terrorism Task Force, the Federal Communications Commission, and Logan Airport Air Traffic Control, the Boston Police Harbor Patrol Unit was dispatched to the Boston Harbor Islands, where they allegedly found Duffy and Folcik, along with another man on the closed Long Island Health campus. All three attempted to flee on foot, according to police, but the arrested pair were caught and a drone found in their possession. The third man, according to police, is “believed to have fled the island in a small vessel.” Police say that all three were engaging in seriously dangerous behavior. “Operators are prohibited from flying drones over people or vehicles and must be aware of airspace restrictions. Even small drones pose significant risks, including the potential for catastrophic damage to airplanes and helicopters. Near-collisions can cause pilots to veer off course, putting lives and property at risk,” they said. Both Duffy and Folcik will appear in Dorchester District Court on charges of trespassing, police said. This is a developing story and it will be updated.Who are the oldest living US presidents?
