Celebrating the end of Bashar al-Assad’s reign as President of Syria and his family’s 50-year stranglehold over the country, Jon Stewart hosted The Daily Show with optimism. Remember optimism? Well, at least until he got to America. Stewart spent much of the first half of tonight’s episode enjoying clips of Syrians toppling statues and stealing chairs from Assad’s vacated palace. He marveled at how quickly Syrian rebels ended a years-long civil war and a half-century of authoritarian control. Finally, he wondered aloud if the leader of the Syrian rebels, Abu Mohammad al-Jolan , a former Al Qaeda member, was a Swiftie. “How many terror groups is this guy in?” Stewart asked. Like many, Stewart didn’t know how to react to al-Jolan’s leadership. On the one hand, he’s a former member of Al Qaeda. On the other, he claims to have gone through a phase and is now calling for a conquest of peace and mercy. “Who amongst us hasn’t gone through an emo phrase, or a goth phase, or a 9/11 phase?” Stewart jokes. “I don’t like Jihad anymore, Dad. I’m into horses.” ” The news out of Syria had Stewart’s attention more than domestic issues this week. However, he did take a look at what President-elect Donald Trump got up to on a pre-presidential trip to Europe. Trump attended the opening Notre Dame with Jill Biden, which our next President immediately turned into sponcon that sexualized the First Lady, like a real class act. Tonight’s episode was mostly a grab bag of Stewart’s excitement over the news in Syria. So the meat of the episode came from the interview segment with Wisconsin Democratic Party Chair Ben Wikler, a candidate for DNC Chair. Stewart was very enthusiastic with Wikler as the candidate pointed out what makes shows like The Daily Show difficult for politicians. “When they’re on your show, they’re trying to remember all those things about what might be a landmine, if you step on it, it’s going to blow up in your face. You’re trained to do that in politics,” Wikler said. “You’re trained to navigate through these incredibly tricky waters. That is sometimes important work to hold a coalition together. But it’s easy to get lost in that and not actually get to the whole point of the thing, which is to fight in a way that makes a difference in people’s lives, so that they remember who was on their side when something went wrong.”
Hontiveros warns gov’t officials ‘coaching’ illegal PogosCommunications Minister Shlomo Karhi said on Wednesday he had collected the signatures of 13 ministers on a document calling for the ouster of Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara. In an interview with the Haredi Kikar Hashabbat website, Karhi presented the document and said he is "actively working on it" and got the process moving himself. The minister said that as soon as he obtains 17 signatures, which would be more than half of the ministers, the government will be obligated to discuss the dismissal procedure, which he says will begin with contacting the search committee. "I think the attorney general is a political adviser who is not worthy of her position and is constantly trying to hem in the government's moves," Karhi said, accusing Baharav-Miara of putting up legal roadblocks. "Every week, she comes up with something new in order to thwart the government's policy." He asserted that Supreme Court Justice Noam Sohlberg also criticized Baharav-Miara when he said to her at the hearing on the appointment of an acting chairman of the Second Broadcasting Authority, "Not only is Minister Karhi's interpretation correct and yours is not, it is also not proper at all that you did not give him representation in court." Karhi was asked if the reason why the attorney general has not been fired yet is because the High Court of Justice would be expected to overturn the decision, and then Baharav-Miara would instruct that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu be declared unable to serve due to conflicts of interest because of his being charged with bribery, fraud and breach of trust. The minister replied that if the process of firing the attorney general was completed, the High Court may overturn the decision on the grounds of "an improper process and acting in conflict of interest." "In this case, too," he said, "incapacity is out of the question." "I'm not fazed by the word 'incapacity,'" Karhi said. "But even if the High Court says otherwise, we'll ignore it. With all due respect, it has no authority on any law." About the possibility that a constitutional crisis could be created over the issue of prime ministerial incapacity, Karhi said, "It's not a constitutional crisis, but a crisis that the High Court would manufacture – and then end up drowning in its own crisis." Karhi argued that the regime in Israel is not a " full democracy ," citing as proof that in a full democracy the court does not have the authority to nullify Basic Laws. He went on to say, "We haven't yet reached a situation of a judicial coup by invoking incapacity. It won't happen, the High Court doesn't have the authority." Last week, top coalition figures said that despite the calls from some ministers to fire the attorney general, the prime minister's position on the issue hasn't changed. The desire to fire Baharav-Miara , who was appointed by the Bennett government, has been evident since the first day of Netanyahu's return as prime minister. But Netanyahu is refraining from pursuing her ouster for several reasons, particularly due to the conflict of interest that would apply because of his trial, and the likelihood the High Court would block the move.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is and from collecting, using, and selling “sensitive” location data of Americans, the agency announced on Tuesday. The FTC targeted Gravy Analytics, its subsidiary Venntel, and Mobilewalla for allegedly violating the FTC Act by collecting and selling information that could be used to track people to healthcare facilities, military bases, religious sites, labor union gatherings, and other sensitive locations. The FTC says ( ) Mobilewalla “relied primarily on consumer information that Mobilewalla collected from real-time bidding exchanges” by bidding to show people personalized ads on their mobile devices and then retaining tracking info identifying them. It also bought info from other sources and used additional data to build out the profiles attached to each advertising ID. Combining that data, according to the complaint, allowed Mobilewalla to create audience segments targeting pregnant women, as well as provide analysis of people who attended protests over the death of George Floyd. Meanwhile, Venntel’s scheme is explained ( ) as collecting location data from otherwise ordinary mobile apps, and then selling access to the data to other businesses or government agencies. reports that the IRS, DEA, FBI, CBP, and ICE have all purchased Venntel data. Now, the companies must comply by never “selling, disclosing, or using sensitive location data in any product or service, and must establish a sensitive data location program.” Mobilewalla’s proposed settlement order will prohibit the company from: Misrepresenting how it collects, maintains, uses, deletes or discloses consumers’ personal information, and the extent to which consumers’ location data is deidentified. Using, transferring, selling and disclosing sensitive location data from health clinics, religious organizations, correctional facilities, labor union offices, LGBTQ+-related locations, political gatherings and military installations. Senator Ron Wyden from Oregon, who led efforts to target a loophole data brokers used to sell sensitive personal data on the market, applauded the FTC and CFPB for limiting what the companies can collect. In a statement sent to , Wyden said these companies could sell information about “law enforcement, judges and members of the armed forces is on the open market” to “anyone with a credit card,” putting citizens and military personnel in danger. Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki admits it’s a little weird having a photo of his former teammate and captain Shea Weber looking down at him now from the wall of the team’s locker rooms at the Bell Centre and at the CN Sports Complex in Brossard. Weber’s photo was put up in the locker rooms “It looks good up there and we’ll probably see Carey’s soon,” Suzuki said after the Canadiens practised Thursday morning in Brossard, noting that Carey Price will probably join Weber in the Hall of Fame next year when he becomes eligible for induction. “It’s pretty cool that you have guys that you played with and now you get to see them in the Hall of Fame, which is pretty special.” Suzuki and Weber were teammates for two seasons before the new Hall of Famer’s career came to an end because of injuries after the Canadiens advanced to the 2021 Stanley Cup final before losing to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Suzuki looked up to Weber and now Weber is looking down on Suzuki in the locker room. What’s the best advice Weber gave Suzuki when they were teammates? “Just little things,” said Suzuki, “Probably the biggest thing was me sitting over here watching him every day, how he handles himself. It’s nothing that really he said. I got to learn a ton off him just watching him every day of how he handles things and interacts with people in the rink.” Suzuki and several of Weber’s old Canadiens teammates — including Price, Brendan Gallagher, Cole Caufield, Joel Armia, Jake Evans, Josh Anderson, Jeff Petry, Ben Chiarot, Paul Byron and Karl Alzner — made the trip to Toronto for his induction ceremony. Suzuki was also able to have dinner with Weber and Anderson last Friday in Montreal before the former Canadiens captain was honoured the next night at the Bell Centre. “It felt like he was still my teammate,” Suzuki said. “It was nice to hang out with him. I got to see him a little bit in Toronto at the ceremony, but not too much one-on-one time. So it was nice to have dinner with him.” During the dinner, Weber made it clear to Suzuki he could call him any time he wants if he needs to talk. Weber knows what it’s like to be a young captain since he was given that role with the Nashville Predators a month shy of his 25th birthday. He was captain of the Predators for six years and won the NHL’s Mark Messier Leadership Award in 2016, “I said don’t be afraid to call or reach out,” Weber said when he met with the media last Saturday at the Bell Centre. “No pressure. Don’t feel like you have to. But I’m just here to listen, even if you want to vent for a half hour, you can just spit things at me.” Weber remembers feeling awkward at first as a young captain when talking to an older teammate who might be 10 years older with three kids. But he grew into the role, just like Suzuki is doing now. He leads the Canadiens in scoring with 7-12-19 totals in 19 games. “Probably the biggest thing I do is try to lead by example,” Suzuki said. “Day-to-day, during the games, in practice, just set the tone for intensity in the way I play. That’s how I’ve always tried to play and I think that’s my best leadership quality.” Despite having a 7-10-2 record and sitting in last place in the Atlantic Division, the Canadiens were only three points out of a wild-card playoff spot following Wednesday’s games. They will be looking to extend their winning streak to three games when the Vegas Golden Knights visit the Bell Centre Saturday The Canadiens had only one three-game winning streak last season and it came in late March. “I think we’ve learned a lot about ourselves,” Suzuki said with the Canadiens about to reach the quarter-mark of the season. “Been through a lot together over kind of a short period of time. The low that we went through has helped us move forward and we’ve gotten better from it. I think we’re in a pretty good spot right now playing really good hockey and just want to keep that going. ... It’s exciting. There’s a lot of us in our division that are within two points of each other.” As the season moves on, Suzuki said he won’t hesitate to pick up the phone and call Weber if needed. “I’ll definitely take advantage of it,” he said about Weber’s offer. “He’s been through everything as a player and it’s definitely a really easy call to make and he’s always there for me.”
