Nissan persuades US court to decertify brake defect class actionsThe Quebec government says they’re meeting with provincial business leaders to talk about the possible 25 per cent tariffs U.S. President-elect Trump has threatened to impose. Economy Minister Christine Fréchette held roundtable discussions this week with some 30 Quebec companies and business associations on this, and there will be more talks coming. “There is a lot at stake. Should any tariff be imposed because many of our businesses export in the U.S. Some of them export only in the U.S. and so one of the recommendations we are making to all businesses is to consider exporting in other countries and the rest of Canada also – it’s important to be there and develop our commercial links with that region,” explained Fréchette. Friday morning, Fréchette was at Investissement Québec’s head office in Montreal with the CEOs of major companies for another roundtable. Quebec is looking to see how to protect jobs, and how businesses can develop in other markets. One of the recommendations we are making to all businesses is to consider exporting in other countries and the rest of Canada also – it’s important to be there and develop our commercial links with that region,” Fréchette explained. “But of course, our plan A remains not to have any tariffs and we want to make sure Americans understand what would be the impact should they go ahead with tariffs. The clear impact would be that Americans would pay more for the goods they are importing from Quebec and Canada. We have to make sure that Americans understand that, that the administration understands that, and that American partners diffuse that message to their leaders.” According to the province, the United States is a leading destination for many Québec exports. In 2023, around 73.6 per cent of Quebec’s merchandise exports — which is worth around $83.7 billion — went to the U.S. Additionally, 96 per cent or $9.8 billion of Quebec’s aluminum exports, 69 per cent or $11.1 billion in Quebec’s aerospace exports, 83 per cent or $8.2 billion of forestry exports, and 68.5% or $8.1 billion of agri-food exports all were destined for the U.S. “In fact we have made important progress this week because we have been discussing with more than 30 important businesses or business associations, and my administration is currently having phone calls with more than 100 businesses that could be impacted by the imposition of tariffs so we are getting a clearer idea of what could happen should tariffs be imposed at the border by the American administration,” said Fréchette. “But our plan is to have no tariff at all of course, so we are asking the federal government to put more resources at the border, we need more people there, more technology, to make sure there are no more illegal people that go from Canada to the US by unofficial ways. This is our plan A and we are focusing on that but we are preparing for different impacts should the administration, the Trump administration go ahead.” These roundtable discussions follow the recent creation of the Quebec-United States ministerial working group last month, in which Fréchette is a part of. The committee also includes ministers Christopher Skeete, Martine Biron, Eric Girard, Maïté Blanchette Vezina, André Lamontagne, François Bonnardel and Jean-François Roberge. They are set to meet regularly and consult with businesses, associations, and experts to provide advice on the various issues related to the province’s trade relationship with the United States.

The regency-style Victoria Barracks in Sydney’s inner east would be converted into residential housing and public parks under proposals from local councillors that echo Paris’ acclaimed transformation of its historic Reuilly barracks. The federal government received an audit of the Australian Defence Force’s sprawling real estate portfolio at the end of last year, which includes the site located between Oxford Street and Moore Park Road, but is now not expected to release its response to the review until after next year’s federal election. Sydney deputy mayor Zann Maxwell outside Victoria Barracks. Credit: Edwina Pickles The City of Sydney will consider a motion on Monday calling for residential redevelopment on parts of the 12.5-hectare Victoria Barracks site if it is put up for divestment as a result of the government’s defence estate review. “Given the density of surrounding Paddington, it’s a site that could potentially accommodate the growing demand for new housing and could provide housing solutions for City of Sydney residents in the future,” says the motion from deputy mayor and Labor councillor Zann Maxwell, which is expected to pass with the backing of Lord Mayor Clover Moore. While up to 50 per cent of Victoria Barracks is heritage-protected, the motion argues that redeveloping parts of the site “could provide significant public benefits, including housing and enhanced community amenities” including parks and bike paths. Arguing that Sydney “needs bold ideas and proactive planning”, Maxwell said: “If Victoria Barracks becomes available, we must be ready to transform it into something extraordinary – something that meets the needs of today while preserving the legacy of the past.” Troops on parade at Victoria Barracks. Maxwell said he wanted to kickstart a debate about how the barracks could be best used if the land is released for alternative use. “I can picture affordable homes integrated with vibrant public spaces, where people picnic on the grass in front of the stunning heritage sandstone barracks, enjoying a space that has been opened up for everyone,” he said. A spokesperson for Moore said the site, built in 1841 to house military personnel in colonial Sydney, “contains one of the most important groups of Edwardian military buildings and one of the best collections of colonial sandstone buildings in Australia”. “While the site’s heritage significance would need to be maintained, this land could provide significant additional benefit,” the spokesperson said. “It is not often such a significant amount of inner-city land becomes available, so any change in use would have to involve community consultation, but affordable housing, parkland and cultural infrastructure are front of mind.” Paris: Military barracks dating back to the 1600s have been transformed into almost 600 apartments, open space and a community centre. Credit: Merlin Dauget/Ville de Paris Greens councillor Sylvie Ellsmore pointed to the 2020 redevelopment of Caserne de Reuilly, a 19th-century former barracks in central Paris, into 600 affordable homes alongside a nursery, artists’ studios and green spaces. “There’s so much in the inner-city where land is really precious but still belongs to the Defence Force,” Ellsmore said. “We could deliver lots and lots of public housing and maintain the green space given the size of that site. “It doesn’t have to be a trade-off.” Victoria Barracks currently houses the headquarters of the Forces Command, which oversees 85 per cent of Army personnel, the Australian Army Museum of NSW and the Australian Army Band Sydney. The ADF, which is failing to meet its ambitious staffing targets, is likely to argue that divesting beloved military sites would make it even harder to attract and retain enough military personnel. Defence is the largest Commonwealth landowner, with a 3 million-hectare portfolio consisting of more than 1000 owned and leased properties, including military bases, barracks, wharves, ports, airbases, training ranges and storage facilities. Opposition Leader Peter Dutton attacked the prospect of a “fire sale” of Defence properties when this masthead reported on the issue in February, accusing Labor of “trashing the history of the Australian Defence Force”. The government subsequently shelved plans to release its response to the review this year, with Defence Minister Richard Marles saying the decisions involved were complicated and should not be rushed. The Australian Strategic Policy Institute’s Raelene Lockhorst, who has written widely about defence infrastructure, told this masthead earlier this year that Victoria Barracks should not be sold off because of the disruption to staff working there. Instead, she nominated HMAS Penguin at Balmoral, a 14-hectare naval training facility sitting on a spectacular site on Middle Head in Sydney Harbour, as a ripe target for divestment. Week 12 of the 2024 NFL regular season was perhaps the wildest one yet, at least in the early window. The Cowboys topped the Commanders in a thriller, the Bears lost to the Vikings in a heartbreaker, the Bucs blew out the Giants at Metlife Stadium and the Chiefs barely escaped the Panthers, among other games. All in all, it was a truly wild day. So far, we've had two NFL head coaches fired this season, in the Saints firing Dennis Allen and the Jets firing Robert Saleh. But should any more head coaches be fired this week? Luke Hales/Getty Images NFL fans are calling for two head coaches to be fired on Sunday evening - Giants head coach Brian Daboll and Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo. "Fire Brian Daboll" The Giants, days after cutting former first round pick Daniel Jones, lost to the Bucs, 30-7, on Sunday. Wide receiver Malik Nabers was calling out his head coach following the blowout loss. "It ain't the quarterback. Same outcome when we had DJ (Daniel Jones) at quarterback. It ain't the quarterback," Nabers, a first round pick, told reporters. #Giants WR Malik Nabers: "It ain't the quarterback. Same outcome when we had DJ (Daniel Jones) at quarterback. It ain't the quarterback." Reporters: "What is it? Is it the play-calling?" Nabers: "I don't know." (🎥 @charlottecrrll ) pic.twitter.com/LIVRnaWM8n NFL fans think that Daboll could be out. "I genuinely think Mara doesn't want to fire another head coach in Daboll. However, if this team looks like even more cheeks down the stretch, it's gonna be a hard sell to keep him next year and pick a QB," one fan wrote. "At this point, I have ZERO faith in Joe Schoen or Brian Daboll. At least if you fire both of them, you can turn the page, and a new regime will get to pick THEIR QB instead of inheriting a previous player," one fan added. "Keeping Daboll or Schoen after this year would be a joke. They both suck. They’ve lost this team entirely. Need to start completely over and get the core players to buy into something new. This isn’t it and never will be it," one fan added. Al Bello/Getty Images "Fire Jerod Mayo" The New England Patriots lost to the Miami Dolphins, 34-15, on Sunday afternoon. Head coach Jerod Mayo took a lot of heat for coaching "scared" against the Dolphins. "The sooner they fire Jerod Mayo the better off they’ll be," one fan wrote. "If Kraft is serious about winning he fires Mayo and does whatever it takes to hire Ben Johnson. Right now the Patriots are one of the worst coached teams in the league," one fan added. "Yall saying we gotta fire Mayo must be forgetting that this team was 2-10 after 12 game last year. Like yall gotta just accept that this roster is BAD and it’s not realistic to fill all the holes in one offseason. Definitely filled the most important one tho. #10 is that guy," one fan added.
