We now know who the deceased is in the officer-involved shooting in Union Square last week, and a few details about the bizarre and angry-sounding hit-and-run the precipitated the shooting. On Friday morning, San Francisco police had a confrontation with a suspect outside the Dior store in Union Square, the details of which have still not been shared with the public, and it ended with police firing on and killing the suspect . The suspect allegedly had run down two pedestrians with his SUV earlier in the day on a nearby block, and allegedly hit a cyclist, and then simply went to work at his night gig guarding the store. That suspect, who police initially identified as a security guard working for Dior, has now been identified by multiple sources as Pete Hodge of Lodi. As Mission Local reports , and after looking at Hodge's Facebook presence, he was the owner of his own private security firm Covert Guardian Solutions — apparently employed by Dior and the nearby Louis Vuitton store — and was likely hired in the wake of the recent smash-and-grab robberies at Dior. Hodge, whose identity, we should say, has not been confirmed by the SF Medical Examiner or police, left behind a number of images on his social media that give us a pretty clear idea of his political leanings. He was a big Second Amendment supporter, not a fan of Gavin Newsom, and not a fan of liberal California or San Francisco — he posted the image below, for instance. And we now have a few clues, unconfirmed by police, about what preceded the shooting. A witness spoke out on Reddit saying they witnessed an SUV, likely Hodge's, getting into a road-rage incident with a delivery cyclist on an e-bike. The cyclist was allegedly weaving between cars, and the SUV driver subsequently clipped the cyclist and then got out of his car and was "super aggressive" in questioning the cyclist and demanding the cyclist's "license and registration," which...? Another witness, Cynthia Gaffney, spoke to Mission Local and said she was crossing Sutter Street Friday afternoon when she saw an SUV come careening around a corner at high speed, and then ride up on the sidewalk — where Hodge allegedly hit and minorly injured two teenagers. "When he careened around the corner, he was totally out of control," Gaffney told Mission Local. "It was like he suddenly hit the gas at full speed ... [he] might’ve rolled over with just a tiny bit more momentum." After having a confrontation with the cyclist, who rode off and dumped his bike in a nearby parking garage, Gaffney says the man identified as Hodge just "very calmly, opens the back of the trunk of the SUV," to gather some of the delivery guy's belongings, and he was open-carrying a weapon at the time. "There was just a weird calmness about it," Gaffney tells Mission Local. Police said Friday they were seeking the cyclist, who fled the scene and never contact police, and it's unclear if he has been located. It seems that Hodge just went to work his security job outside the Dior store after all this went down. The collision with the cyclist and the pedestrians happened at Kearny and Post streets around 6:30 pm Thursday, and his vehicle wasn't spotted at the store on Post Street near Grant until 1:30 am Friday. The SFPD will give a public town hall meeting on the shooting, per protocol, within the next week. Previously: SF Police Shoot and Kill Man Identified as Union Square Security Guard

THE CANADIAN PRESS/Chad Hipolito VANCOUVER — BC Ferries has cancelled many sailings on Christmas Day after Environment Canada issued dozens of wind and heavy rain warnings for British Columbia's south coast. The ferry firm says the "severe" forecast means all sailings between Tsawwassen and Duke Point in Nanaimo on Wednesday have been axed, while trips between Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. have also been scrapped. Sailings are also cancelled between Horseshoe Bay and Departure Bay in Nanaimo between 10:40 a.m. and 6:35 p.m. BC Ferries says the cancellations have been made to ensure the safety of customers and crew and other sailings on Wednesday are also at risk. Environment Canada has issued 24 wind and heavy rain warnings for the south coast on Christmas Day, as the region braces for the second in a series of festive-week storms. The agency says up to 100 millimetres of rain could drench Metro Vancouver and other areas, while winds up to 100 km/h could hit Victoria and elsewhere on Vancouver Island. For more On Football analysis, head here . ___ Recommended Videos Getting benched may have been the best thing that happened to Bryce Young and Anthony Richardson. Both second-year quarterbacks are playing well since returning to the starting lineup. Young has steadily improved after coming back in Week 8. He’s displayed the skills that earned him a Heisman Trophy at Alabama and convinced the Carolina Panthers to draft him ahead of C.J. Stroud with the No. 1 overall pick in 2023. Young had his best game on Sunday, nearly leading Carolina to an overtime win over Tampa Bay if it weren’t for Chuba Hubbard’s fumble in field-goal range. He threw for 298 yards and a go-ahead touchdown pass in the final minute of a 26-23 loss . Young almost led the Panthers to a win over the two-time defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs a week earlier only to see Patrick Mahomes drive Kansas City into position for a winning field goal as time expired. Rookie coach Dave Canales benched Young for veteran Andy Dalton after just two games in which he had a 44.1 passer rating. The 23-year-old has completed 60.4% of his passes for 1,062 yards, six TDs and three interceptions — none in the past three games — while going 2-3 in the five starts since Young got another opportunity to lead the Panthers (3-9). Richardson has led Indianapolis to a pair of comeback wins late in the fourth quarter in three starts after he regained his starting job. The Colts (6-7) selected Richardson No. 4 last year and he started just 10 games before coach Shane Steichen benched him for Joe Flacco in Week 9. Richardson completed only 44.4% of his passes with four TDs and seven picks in his first six starts. He’s improved to 52.4% with three TDs and two picks since coming back. The 22-year-old tossed a 3-yard TD pass to Alec Pierce on fourth-and-goal with 12 seconds remaining and then ran in for a 2-point conversion to lift the Colts to a 25-24 win over New England on Sunday. Young and Richardson both have a long way to go to prove they can be franchise quarterbacks. But there’s far more optimism now that they’re not busts. Young is on his third head coach and second offensive coordinator in two seasons. Canales is known for getting the best out of quarterbacks, helping Geno Smith and Baker Mayfield revive their careers. He made a bold decision to bench Young after just two games but that allowed him to watch, grow and learn without the pressure of having to perform. Now it appears Young might have a future in Carolina when that seemed unlikely in September. Richardson just needs more experience. He threw only 393 passes in college and started four games as a rookie before he was injured. Steichen’s decision to bench him for Flacco didn’t work out. Flacco, who was the AP NFL Comeback Player of the Year last year after leading Cleveland to the playoffs by going 4-1 in five starts, struggled in two games. Still, that gave Richardson a chance to reset after tapping out for a play in the game before he was benched. Quarterbacks need time to develop. They can’t be judged fairly after one or two seasons, especially when they were high draft picks who joined bad teams that lacked talent. Clock management blunders Matt Eberflus lost his job as Chicago’s head coach a day after he watched the offense run out of time with a timeout in hand, missing an opportunity to push Detroit to overtime on Thanksgiving. But Antonio Pierce made an even worse decision on Black Friday that cost the Raiders a chance to beat the Chiefs. Aidan O’Donnell drove Las Vegas to the Chiefs 32 with 15 seconds left. Instead of trying for a game-winning field goal down 19-17, Pierce wanted O’Donnell to take the snap, allow more time to tick and throw the ball away. But O’Donnell wasn’t ready for the snap, the Chiefs recovered the fumble and escaped with the win. aManaging the clock shouldn’t be this difficult for NFL head coaches. Tucker’s troubles Ravens kicker Justin Tucker is having the worst season of his 13-year career. If he wasn’t one of the best kickers in NFL history, Baltimore would’ve made a switch already. But coach John Harbaugh has too much respect for Tucker, who began the season as the most accurate kicker in league history. Tucker has missed a career-high eight field-goal attempts, including two in a 24-19 loss to Philadelphia. Harbaugh, a former special teams coach, isn’t planning to replace Tucker. But the Ravens (8-5) have Super Bowl aspirations and Tucker needs to straighten things out. One solution would be to place him on injured reserve to work on his technique. In this case, Tucker has earned the right not to be released. Plus, he’s signed through 2027. ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl

The Atlanta Falcons re-signed linebacker Rashaan Evans to the practice squad on Tuesday. Evans played in two games for the Falcons earlier this season and received one defensive snap and five on special teams. He was on the roster Weeks 9-15 before being released Dec. 21. Evans, 29, was a first-round pick (22nd overall) in 2018 by the Tennessee Titans. He spent four seasons with the Titans before signing with the Falcons prior to the 2022 season. Evans stood out for Atlanta in 2022 with a career-high 159 tackles and two sacks. He played in nine games for the Dallas Cowboys in 2023. Overall, Evans has 485 tackles and five sacks in 87 career games (68 starts) over seven NFL seasons. Atlanta also signed defensive lineman Kyler Baugh to the practice squad. He was on the practice squads of the New Orleans Saints and New York Giants earlier this season. Baugh, 23, has not played in an NFL game. He originally was signed as an undrafted free agent by the New Orleans Saints following the 2024 NFL Draft. --Field Level MediaNFL NOTES
