OpenAI CEO Sam Altman plans to make a $1 million personal donation to President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration fund, after other tech leaders pledged a similar amount. A spokesperson for OpenAI confirmed the donation Friday (Deember 13). The announcement follows similar contributions, including $1 million from Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, and a planned $1 million donation from Amazon. A spokesperson for Amazon confirmed Thursday evening that the e-commerce giant will also stream Trump’s inauguration on its Prime Video service. The streaming arrangement is considered an in-kind donation valued at an additional $1 million. “President Trump will lead our country into the age of AI, and I am eager to support his efforts to ensure America stays ahead," Altman said in a statement. Altman, who is embroiled in a legal dispute with rival Elon Musk, said he is “not that worried” about Musk’s growing influence within Trump’s administration. Tech leaders seek to strengthen ties Trump recently tapped Musk, the world’s richest person, and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy to head the new Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE. The advisory committee aims to work with government officials to reduce spending and regulations. The donations from Altman, Amazon and Meta show a broader push by tech companies to navigate a changing political landscape. The contributions come amid growing scrutiny of Silicon Valley’s influence and its role in shaping the future of artificial intelligence and innovation. Legal dispute between Altman and Musk Musk, a former OpenAI investor and board member, sued the artificial intelligence company earlier this year, accusing it of abandoning its mission of prioritising public benefit over profits. Musk has since escalated the lawsuit, asking a federal judge to block OpenAI’s transition to a for-profit model. Altman has publicly downplayed Musk’s influence, but the legal battle is a clear marker of a rift between two of the tech world’s most prominent figures. With tech companies like OpenAI, Meta, and Amazon making significant contributions, the intersection of technology and politics continues to evolve in the lead-up to Trump’s inauguration. With inputs from agenciesThe Manhattan district attorney's office is asking Judge Juan M. Merchan to "pretend as if one of the assassination attempts against President Trump had been successful," Trump's lawyers wrote in a 23-page response. In court papers made public Tuesday, District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office proposed an array of options for keeping the historic conviction on the books after Trump's lawyers filed paperwork this month asking for the case to be dismissed. They include freezing the case until Trump leaves office in 2029, agreeing that any future sentence won't include jail time, or closing the case by noting he was convicted but that he wasn't sentenced and his appeal wasn't resolved because of presidential immunity. Trump lawyers Todd Blanche and Emil Bove reiterated Friday their position that the only acceptable option is overturning his conviction and dismissing his indictment, writing that anything less will interfere with the transition process and his ability to lead the country. The Manhattan district attorney's office declined comment. It's unclear how soon Merchan will decide. He could grant Trump's request for dismissal, go with one of the prosecution's suggestions, wait until a federal appeals court rules on Trump's parallel effort to get the case moved out of state court, or choose some other option. In their response Friday, Blanche and Bove ripped each of the prosecution's suggestions. Halting the case until Trump leaves office would force the incoming president to govern while facing the "ongoing threat" that he'll be sentenced to imprisonment, fines or other punishment as soon as his term ends, Blanche and Bove wrote. Trump, a Republican, takes office Jan. 20. The prosecution's suggestion that Merchan could mitigate those concerns by promising not to sentence Trump to jail time on presidential immunity grounds is also a non-starter, Blanche and Bove wrote. The immunity statute requires dropping the case, not merely limiting sentencing options, they contend. Blanche and Bove, both of whom Trump tapped for high-ranking Justice Department positions, expressed outrage at the prosecution's novel suggestion that Merchan borrow from Alabama and other states and treat the case as if Trump died. Blanche and Bove accused prosecutors of ignoring New York precedent and attempting to "fabricate" a solution "based on an extremely troubling and irresponsible analogy between President Trump" who survived assassination attempts in Pennsylvania in July and Florida in September "and a hypothetical dead defendant." Such an option normally comes into play when a defendant dies after being convicted but before appeals are exhausted. It is unclear whether it is viable under New York law, but prosecutors suggested that Merchan could innovate in what's already a unique case. "This remedy would prevent defendant from being burdened during his presidency by an ongoing criminal proceeding," prosecutors wrote in their filing this week. But at the same time, it wouldn't "precipitously discard" the "meaningful fact that defendant was indicted and found guilty by a jury of his peers." Prosecutors acknowledged that "presidential immunity requires accommodation" during Trump's impending return to the White House but argued that his election to a second term should not upend the jury's verdict, which came when he was out of office. Longstanding Justice Department policy says sitting presidents cannot face criminal prosecution. Other world leaders don't enjoy the same protection. For example, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is on trial on corruption charges even as he leads that nation's wars in Lebanon and Gaza. Trump has fought for months to reverse his May 30 conviction on 34 counts of falsifying business records. Prosecutors said he fudged the documents to conceal a $130,000 payment to porn actor Stormy Daniels to suppress her claim that they had sex a decade earlier, which Trump denies. Trump's hush money conviction was in state court, meaning a presidential pardon — issued by Biden or himself when he takes office — would not apply to the case. Presidential pardons only apply to federal crimes. Since the election, special counsel Jack Smith ended his two federal cases, which pertained to Trump's efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss and allegations that he hoarded classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate. A separate state election interference case in Fulton County, Georgia, is largely on hold. Trump denies wrongdoing in each case. Trump was scheduled for sentencing in the hush money case in late November, but following Trump's Nov. 5 election win, Merchan halted proceedings and indefinitely postponed the former and future president's sentencing so the defense and prosecution could weigh in on the future of the case. Trump is the first former president to be convicted of a crime and the first convicted criminal to be elected to the office.

Swinney ridiculed for claiming health minister Neil Gray took limo to glitzy premiere because movie 'was about addiction' Click here to visit the Scotland home page for the latest news and sport By TOM GORDON DEPUTY SCOTTISH POLITICAL EDITOR Published: 21:52, 27 November 2024 | Updated: 21:53, 27 November 2024 e-mail View comments John Swinney has been branded ‘desperate’ after claiming under-fire health secretary Neil Gray attended a glitzy film bash because the movie touched upon addiction. The First Minister said Mr Gray needed to be chauffeured in a ministerial car to the opening of the Edinburgh International Film Festival as it was ‘relevant to his portfolio’. The Scottish Tories accused Mr Swinney of ‘clutching at straws’ but the First Minister doubled down in his defence of his beleaguered colleague after the Mail revealed Mr Gray had taken an official limo to and from the gala event. Mr Gray’s wife Karlie also attended the star-studded premiere at the Cameo cinema on August 15. The Scottish Government has insisted Mr Gray was performing ‘ministerial duties’, which justified his use of taxpayer- funded transport. But the premiere was also attended by Culture Secretary Angus Robertson, who met with the film’s star, Saoirse Ronan , and the festival’s director and chair. That has raised questions about why Mr Gray, who is already under-fire over football trips, went as well – other than as a ‘jolly’. Government records state Mr Gray discussed ‘culture’ at a ‘reception’ held at the premiere with film quango Screen Scotland, but the First Minister yesterday claimed he went because of his health brief. Neil Gray was driven in a ministerial car to attend the film bash with his wife Karlie The event to promote movie The Outrun was already being attended by Culture Secretary Angus Robertson who met with the film's star Saoirse Ronan, above Asked by the Mail why Mr Gray needed to attend when Mr Robertson was already at the screening, Mr Swinney said it had been for ‘government business’. Asked what Mr Gray added, the SNP leader replied: ‘Well, he was attending a film which is addressing the issues of drug addiction and alcohol addiction. ‘And mental health and well-being are therefore relevant to his portfolio interests as the Cabinet Secretary for Health.’ The opening night featured the UK premiere of The Outrun, a film based on Amy Liptrot’s memoir about recovering from alcoholism in Orkney, where Mr Gray grew up. Click here to visit the Scotland home page for the latest news and sport Advertisement The Airdrie and Shotts MSP had raved on social media about how much he was looking forward to seeing The Outrun before he took on the health portfolio. While economy secretary last December, he wrote ‘Cannot wait to see this!’ and ‘Cannot wait!’ about the film, two months before he was moved to health after Michael Matheson quit over an expenses scandal. The Scottish Conservatives said Mr Gray was guilty of a ‘pattern of behaviour’ and appeared to have simply been on a ‘jolly’ at the premiere. Deputy leader Rachael Hamilton: ‘This is a desperate defence from John Swinney of his Cabinet colleague. He knows fine well that there was no justification for Neil Gray to be at this event and is clutching at straws. ‘Taxpayers are sick and tired of the SNP taking them for a ride. Honest John should have had the decency to be upfront with the public over Neil Gray’s behaviour, instead of giving this absurd response.’ Mr Gray apologised to parliament earlier this month after using his ministerial limo to attend eight football matches, four of them involving his favourite club, Aberdeen. He admitted that he had given the impression of being ‘more of a fan and less as a minister’ and said he should have ‘attended a wider range of games and not just Aberdeen’. He was also chauffeured to four Scotland international matches at Hampden Park in Glasgow. Half of the eight games were when he held the economy brief. Mr Gray, a father-of-four, took a family member or guest to five of the matches in his official car, but insisted that it had not cost the taxpayer any extra. The government has refused to say if Mr Gray used his car to pick up his wife before they attended the premiere together. A government spokesman said: ‘Ministers attend sporting and cultural events as part of their ministerial duties.’ John Swinney SNP Share or comment on this article: Pull the other one, John! Tragic Farewell: The Whistleblower Who Challenged OpenAIAmritsar: The eighteenth-generation descendant of Bhai Mardana on Wednesday expressed dismay over Sikh religious organisations, particularly those formed in his name, neglecting the memory of Guru Nanak Dev ’s companion and “failing to observe the anniversaries of his birth and death”. Bhai Mardana, lifelong Muslim companion of Sikhism’s first master, was born to a Mirasi couple, Badra and Lakkho of Rai Bhoe Di Talwandi (in Pakistan’s Nankana Sahib). On the occasion of Bhai Mardana’s death anniversary, his direct descendant Bhai Naeem Tahir Lal said, “I wonder why Sikhism’s prominent institutions and organisations formed in the name of Bhai Mardana don’t remember him.” Strangely, there is a confusion surrounding the date of Bhai Mardana's death anniversary, with discrepancies between the date claimed by Bhai Mardana’s family and the one claimed by various Sikh organisations, including the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee ( SGPC ). Bhai Naeem, who lives in Lahore, says the death anniversary falls on Nov 27, while the SGPC has scheduled a function at Gurdwara Manji Sahib Diwan Hall on Nov 28 to mark the occasion. Bhai Naeem’s organisation ‘ Jatha Bhai Lal Ji ’ is often invited to perform the recitation of kirtan at various gurdwaras in Pakistan, India and other countries. The jatha includes Bhai Naeem’s elder brother Mohammad Hussain and his (Hussain’s) son Mohammad Sarfraz Hussain, who was the 19th-generation direct descendent of Bhai Mardana. The jatha receives Rs 21,000 monthly stipend from the SGPC. Jagjit Singh of the Bhai Mardana Yadgiri Kirtan Darbar Society said, "Due to some personal reasons, we were unable to organise a large event to commemorate the death anniversary of Bhai Mardana. However, we did hold an ardas in his honour on Wednesday.” However, SGPC and Vishav Rababi Bhai Mardana Ji Welfare Society have scheduled the function on Nov 28. Sources said that the Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (PSGPC) received complaints from the sangat regarding the incorrect recitation of ‘tuka’ (verses) of Gurbani by the Jatha Bhai Lal Ji. When contacted, PSGPC president Ramesh Singh said the “complaints had indeed been received from the Indian jatha”. However, Bhai Naeem was quick to dismiss these allegations, saying, “When success comes, many people become jealous. Out of this jealousy, they spread lies, and this is one such big lie being propagated about Jatha Bhai Lal Ji.” We also published the following articles recently Not Sanjay Dutt but THIS star was the first choice for Munna Bhai MBBS reveals Vidhu Vinod Chopra Filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra revealed at IFFI Goa that Sanjay Dutt wasn't the original choice for Munna Bhai MBBS. Dec 13 (Reuters) - OpenAI said it would ask a judge in California on Friday to reject a request by billionaire Elon Musk to halt the ChatGPT maker’s conversion to a for-profit company. OpenAI also published a trove of emails and text messages , opens new tab with Musk on its website to argue that he initially backed for-profit status for OpenAI before walking away from the company after failing to get a majority equity stake and full control. Musk, who was an OpenAI cofounder, has since launched a competing artificial intelligence company, xAI. Musk sued OpenAI , its CEO Sam Altman and others in August, claiming they violated contract provisions by putting profits ahead of the public good in the push to advance AI. In November he asked U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers in Oakland for a preliminary injunction blocking OpenAI from converting to a for-profit structure. A lawyer for Musk did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Friday. OpenAI’s blog post said Musk “should be competing in the marketplace rather than the courtroom.” Musk has since added Microsoft (MSFT.O) , opens new tab and others as defendants to his lawsuit, alleging OpenAI was scheming to sideline rivals and monopolize the market for generative artificial intelligence. OpenAI started as a nonprofit in 2014 and has become the face of generative AI through billions of dollars in funding from Microsoft. In October it closed a $6.6 billion funding round from investors, which could value the company at $157 billion. Musk’s xAI earlier this month said it had raised about $6 billion in equity financing. OpenAI is working on a plan to restructure its core business into a for-profit benefit corporation. The OpenAI nonprofit would own a minority stake in the for-profit company. Furthermore, the ceasefire conditions proposed by Trump as part of the peace talks initiative have been a major source of disagreement between the two leaders. Zelensky has been vocal in advocating for a ceasefire that ensures the protection of civilian populations in conflict-affected areas, as well as the withdrawal of Russian forces from Ukrainian territory. However, Trump's proposed ceasefire terms may not align with Zelensky's vision for a sustainable and lasting peace in the region.

Strife, the second character, highlights the deep-rooted divisions and conflicts that have torn Taiwanese society apart. Political polarization, social inequality, and cultural clashes have fueled a sense of animosity and antagonism among the population, hindering progress and unity. The constant struggle for dominance and control has created a toxic environment where cooperation and understanding are often sacrificed in favor of confrontation and discord.
