December 12, 2024 (PORT SUDAN) – The Sudanese People’s Liberation Movement- Revolutionary Democratic Current (SPLM-RDC) on Thursday urged Sudanese expatriates to protest the ongoing conflict and rejected the formation of a government-in-exile, warning it could lead to the country’s division. The statement comes in response to proposals from some Tagadum political groups to establish an exile government to challenge the military’s authority. However, the SPLM-RDC, led by Yasir Arman, argues that such a move would only “legitimize the division of Sudan, prolong the war, and increase the suffering of citizens.” “We do not support the establishment of a government-in-exile,” the group said in a statement. “The priority should be given to stopping the war, isolating those calling for its continuation, and preserving the unity of the state.” The government in exile has divided the anti-war coalition. However, the Revolutionary Current was the first to openly reject this proposal. The military has consolidated its power in Port Sudan since the outbreak of the conflict with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Additionally, they ousted several Darfur group leaders from the Sovereign Council due to their declared neutrality in the ongoing war.”. The SPLM-RDC criticized the international community’s tacit recognition of the military authority in Port Sudan, stating it reflects a desire to avoid declaring Sudan a failed state. Further, the group called on Sudanese nationals abroad to organize a campaign to stop the conflict and war crimes, including supporting displaced people and refugees and lobbying international organizations. “Mutual concessions between the forces of the revolution are sufficient to change the balance of power and restrain the forces of war,” the statement said. The group also rejected the immediate inclusion of those who orchestrated the 2021 coup and the current conflict in any future political negotiations, insisting that they should not be allowed to “gain power without resolving the humanitarian disaster and war crimes.” The SPLM-RDC emphasized the need for unity among pro-democracy forces before any formal political process begins.
The WTA 2024 season was filled with some epic matches. However, what distinguishes those matches from others this year is the highly intense drama on the court with players rallying to save match points and going on to win matches from the brink of defeat. The narrow escape from defeat also led some of them to eventually claim the tournament title. Three women, Iga Swiatek , Coco Gauff , and Jasmine Paolini , highlighted all this on the court this season. In this article, let us take a deep dive into how they managed to do so even in the most difficult of circumstances – best WTA comeback wins in 2024. 3) Wimbledon semifinal, Jasmine Paolini defeats Donna Vekic 2-6, 6-4, 7-6(8) Vekic looked in total control of the match after winning the first set. The Croatian was staring at her first Grand Slam as she continued with the momentum in the second. But, Jasmine Paolini found a way back into the match with time. She held her nerve to ensure she got back. In the deciding set, Vekic increased her tempo and was on course for victory after leading 5-4. But, Paolini climbed back to take the set to a tiebreak. The Italian trailed 1-3, 5-6, 7-8, but kept fighting until she won 10-8. The tie became the longest Wimbledon women’s semifinal match, lasting for two hours and 51 minutes. 2) WTA Finals final, Coco Gauff defeats Qinwen Zheng 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(2) It was one of the best matches of the year and arguably since the 2020s. It looked almost done for Coco Gauff after a poor display in the first set that saw Zheng dominating on all fronts. But, the American turned the tide around in the second set to ensure she gave everything for the title. Surprisingly, it was Zheng who took a 2-0 lead in the deciding set. Gauff fought her way back but she suddenly found herself 3-5 down and with just two points from a disappointing defeat. Yet, she took the set to a tiebreak and won the first six points. The Chinese star threatened a comeback but the World No.3 took the victory off her third match point with a trademark forehand winner as she came close to the net. 1) Roland Garros round 2, Iga Swiatek defeats Naomi Osaka 7-6(1), 1-6, 7-5 In one of the most entertaining matches of the season, Osaka proved that she could rise up to the occasion. The Japanese star crushed Iga Swiatek in the second set after a narrow opening set loss. The deciding set was the most stunning outcome of the season. Swiatek’s 15-match winning streak was about to end when she was down 2-5 in the third. At one time, Osaka just needed two points to end the tie, but Swiatek’s sudden surge helped her win five consecutive game points. She saved a match point and defeated Osaka in the high-quality contest . After that, Swiatek didn’t drop a set until she eventually lifted her fourth French Open title. Thousands of Afghans on Thursday attended the funeral of the refugees minister, AFP journalists saw, after he was killed in a suicide bombing in Kabul the day before in an attack claimed by the Islamic State group. The Minister for Refugees and Repatriation, Khalil Ur-Rahman Haqqani, was killed on Wednesday afternoon in a suicide bombing at the ministry's offices in the Afghan capital. Thousands of men, many of them armed, gathered for Haqqani's funeral in his home village of Sarana, in a mountainous area of Paktia province, south of Kabul. The funeral included heavy security, with armoured vehicles, snipers and personnel manning the area and the road from Kabul, which was jammed with hundreds of cars as mourners travelled from surrounding provinces. Senior Taliban officials, including the Chief of Army Staff Qari Fasihuddin Fitrat, and Maulawi Abdul Kabir, political deputy of the prime minister's office, attended the funeral, according to an AFP team on site. The deceased's nephew, the powerful interior minister, Sirajuddin Haqqani, also attended, along with foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi. In a speech there, Muttaqi said the latest IS attacks had been planned "abroad", denouncing, without naming them, "countries harbouring" the organisation. "We call on all nations to work together to stop the common enemy, which does not recognise any kind of morality." In September, the Taliban authorities said IS had training camps in Balochistan province of Pakistan, which also regularly faces jihadist attacks. Haqqani, the highest ranked member of the Taliban government to be killed in an attack since their return to power, "was a big loss for us, the system and the nation", said Paktia resident Hedayatullah, 22. "May God protect our other leaders and keep them victorious." "Our leader... who had his life brutally taken away, achieved martyrdom," said Bostan, 53, haranguing the "cowardly attack" that killed Haqqani. The United Nations mission in Afghanistan condemned the attack on Thursday, offering condolences to the victims' families. "There can be no place for terrorism in the quest for stability," the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said on X. The European Union and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation also condemned the attack, along with Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Iran. Haqqani -- who is on US and UN sanctions lists and never appeared without an automatic weapon in his hand -- was the brother of Jalaluddin Haqqani, founder of the feared Haqqani network responsible for some of the most violent attacks during the Taliban's two-decade insurgency. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack, saying a bomber detonated an explosive vest inside the ministry, according to a statement on its Amaq news agency, as translated by the SITE Intelligence Group. Taliban authorities had already blamed IS for the "cowardly attack" -- the first targeting a minister since the Taliban returned to power in 2021. Violence has waned in Afghanistan since the Taliban forces took over the country that year, ending their war against US-led NATO coalition forces. However, the regional chapter of IS, known as Islamic State Khorasan, is active in Afghanistan and has regularly targeted civilians, foreigners and Taliban officials with gun and bomb attacks. bur-qb-sw/nroSyrians rejoice as Assad flees, ending brutal reign

The Conservatives have called on Sir Keir Starmer to reject an international arrest warrant issued for Benjamin Netanyahu as they accused the Government of holding a “nonsensical” position on the issue. In a letter to the Prime Minister, shadow foreign secretary Dame Priti Patel and shadow justice secretary Robert Jenrick claimed the decision by the International Criminal Court (ICC) had “no proper basis in international law”. They said the UK’s refusal to explicitly say whether or not the Israeli premier would be detained if he arrived in the country “opens the farcical spectre of your Government trying to sanction the arrest” of an ally to Britain. Criticising the ICC warrant, the shadow ministers said: “It is hard to escape the conclusion this is an activist decision, motivated by politics and not the law.” They argued the court was established to pursue cases in instances where countries do not have robust and independent judiciaries, which could not be said of Israel. “The UK Government’s response to the decision has been nonsensical,” they said. “On Friday, the Home Secretary refused to say whether Mr Netanyahu would be detained if he travelled to the UK. “This opens the farcical spectre of your Government trying to sanction the arrest on UK soil of the leader of an ally of the UK, while you continue a diplomatic charm offensive with the Chinese Communist Party leader Xi Jinping. “It falls to you to clarify the Government’s position – now. The Government must make clear that it does not support an arrest warrant being issued which has no proper basis in international law.” Downing Street on Friday indicated that Mr Netanyahu could face arrest if he entered the UK, refusing to comment on “hypotheticals” but saying Britain would always follow its “legal obligations”. The International Criminal Court Act 2001 states that a Secretary of State must, on receipt of a request for arrest from the ICC, “transmit the request and the documents accompanying it to an appropriate judicial officer”. Asked whether the UK would comply with requirements under the Act, Sir Keir’s spokesman said: “Yes, the Government would fulfil its obligations under the Act and indeed its legal obligations.” The ICC has issued a warrant for Mr Netanyahu and his former defence minister Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes in Gaza. Number 10 previously said the domestic process linked to ICC arrest warrants has never been used to date by the UK because no-one wanted by the international court had visited the country. It added that Israel remained a “key partner across a range of areas”. The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said: “It is important that we have a dialogue with Israel at all levels to reach the ceasefire that we all want to see, to bring an end to the violence, to protect civilians and ensure the release of hostages.” The ICC also issued a warrant for Mohammed Deif, head of Hamas’s armed wing, over the October 7 2023 attacks that triggered Israel’s offensive in Gaza. A domestic court process would be required before Mr Netanyahu faced arrest if he set foot in the UK. The ICC said there are “reasonable grounds to believe” Mr Netanyahu and Mr Gallant were responsible for “the war crime of starvation as a method of warfare, and the crimes against humanity of murder, persecution and other inhumane acts”. The court’s pre-trial chamber also found “reasonable grounds to believe that Mr Netanyahu and Mr Gallant each bear criminal responsibility as civilian superiors for the war crime of intentionally directing an attack against the civilian population”. The impact of the warrants is likely to be limited since Israel and its major ally, the US, are not members of the ICC.The Red Sox new-look bullpen is beginning to take shape, but will the club's recent additions be enough?
