The suspect, identified by police as Luigi Nicholas Mangione, had a gun believed to be the one used in Wednesday’s attack on Brian Thompson , as well as writings expressing anger at corporate America, police said. Here are some of the latest developments in the ongoing investigation: Mangione was taken into custody at around 9:15 a.m. after police received a tip that he was eating at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, about 85 miles (137 kilometers) east of Pittsburgh, police said. Mangione was being held in Pennsylvania on gun charges and will eventually be extradited to New York to face charges in connection with Thompson’s death, said NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny. In addition to a three-page, handwritten document that suggests he harbored “ill will toward corporate America,” Kenny said Mangione also had a ghost gun , a type of weapon that can be assembled at home and is difficult to trace. Officers questioned Mangione, who was acting suspiciously and carrying multiple fraudulent IDs, as well as a U.S. passport, New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a news conference. Officers also found a suppressor, “consistent with the weapon used in the murder,” the commissioner said. At 6:44 a.m., he shot Thompson at a side entrance to the hotel, fled on foot, then climbed aboard a bicycle and within four minutes had entered Central Park. Another security camera recorded the gunman leaving the park near the American Museum of Natural History at 6:56 a.m. still on the bicycle but without the backpack. But none of all this ever gets done. Whether or not Lady Starmer believes her husband’s grand statements is her business — but he has been in office for just five months and voters have already lost faith in the Prime Minister’s ability to match his fine WORDS with ACTIONS. The country was subjected yesterday to yet another Starmer speech telling us what he plans to do to sort out the mess left by 14 years of Tory government. This was not, No10 informed a sceptical nation, a reset after five months of failure. It most definitely wasn’t a relaunch, amid plummeting poll ratings with disillusioned voters. read more on opinion Absolutely not. No, this was all a part of Labour’s “ plan for change ”. The PM set out his “six milestones” for delivering that change, with David Brent-style promises about measurable deliverables” — the stuff he wants voters to judge his Government on in four and a half years’ time. Those “six milestones” are of course completely and utterly different from the “five missions” before the election and the “six first steps” after his election victory. Most read in The Sun Oh, and the “seven pillars of growth” and “three foundations” he’s talked about, too. The trouble is that a lot of the six milestones he mentioned are the same as some of the missions and steps, and most of those were already pretty meagre offerings in the first place. They cover a range of things — boosting our real household disposable income, NHS waiting lists, building new homes, getting kids ready to start school, recruiting more police officers and fossil fuel- free electricity by 2030 (watered down from 100 per cent to the equally unachievable 95 per cent). The Prime Minister described this as “the most ambitious yet honest delivery plan in a generation”. Elephant in the room Well, if you think nine out of ten patients waiting ONLY four months to see a hospital consultant is ambitious, it sets the bar pretty low. And crucially, those milestones didn’t include any targets for cutting immigration, despite a million more people arriving here each year; any goal to cut welfare costs, despite the billions spent on working-aged people claiming sickness benefits; or a date when we will spend more on defence amid rising global threats. There wasn’t just one elephant in the room, there was an entire herd, stomping and trumpeting as Starmer spoke. But who was listening, anyway? Five months ago, in his maiden speech after Labour ’s election landslide, Sir Keir pledged the “work of change will begin immediately”. Since then, we’ve had more than 67 reviews, consultations and taskforces set up, but very little has got done. And the things they have done have been disasters — from scrapping winter fuel allowance and increasing employer National Insurance contributions, to the farmers’ inheritance tax, bus fare rises and prisoner early releases. All that is not even to mention Freebie-gate, Chancellor Rachel Reeves ’ alleged CV lies and a Cabinet minister forced to quit over her criminal conviction for fraud. To be fair to Starmer, I should point out his election manifesto promised change, it didn’t specify that it would be change for the better. But he can make as many speeches as he likes, and milestones, missions and first steps just won’t hack it any more with long-suffering voters. Labour said they had a plan. But they don’t. This country needs fixing and it needs fixing NOW They said they would grow the economy. Yet they aren’t. They said they would be competent, and they’re not. They said they’d fix the NHS. They won’t. In a few years’ time, Starmer will be making yet another speech, announcing his 347th relaunch-that-isn’t-a-relaunch, and nothing will have changed. The PM needs to stop talking about change and get down to the long, hard slog of actually delivering on his promises. We simply cannot afford to wait for another four years before we start on the road to recovery. This country needs fixing and it needs fixing NOW. So, instead of talking about what you’re planning to do, Prime Minister, why don’t you just get on and do it? Oh, and while you’re at it, can you take the bins out. WALLACE SHOULD BE LONG GONE EVEN as a “middle-class woman of a certain age”, I wanted to give MasterChef star Gregg Wallace the benefit of the doubt, as a big believer in innocence until proven guilty. But the huge number of women coming forward to tell their tales of his alleged lewd, sexist and demeaning behaviour suggests there is a case for him (and the BBC) to answer. What saddens me most is how so few of Wallace’s female accusers felt able to speak out for years. The last time a man put his hand on my knee , I told him I would punch him in the face if he did it again. Indeed, I featured on the front page of this very newspaper years later – and the man in question, former Defence Secretary Michael Fallon , ended up losing his job. Gregg Wallace should have been told to shut his cakehole, put his clothes back on and get out of the MasterChef kitchen a long time ago. The fifth annual toy drive at Mr. J’s has been going on since mid-November, but on Sunday, the local chain began giving half a dozen bagels to those who donate toys. Angela Dean implemented the toy drive when she became the owner of Mr. J’s in 2020. The bagel shop had previously participated in Toys for Tots, but Dean said she wanted to do something more local. The toy drive benefits Elkton Area United Services and the local Salvation Army, which runs the Angel Tree program. “There’s kind of a large span [of toys] — some infant toys sometimes,” Dean said. “It depends on who someone’s shopping for. If it’s a girl, they’ll grab an extra Barbie and drop a Barbie in there, or they drop whatever they have. I hope that they think, ‘Hey, maybe I have an extra, I’ll grab this Barbie, or I’ll grab this Hot Wheels.’” To donate, customers can bring new, packaged toys to the three Harrisonburg locations or Mr. J’s Elkton Express location and put them in one of the specially decorated boxes. At the Market Street location in Harrisonburg, the box that Dean designed looks like Santa going headfirst down a chimney. As of Monday afternoon, only a few small toys had been placed inside it. CLEVELAND (AP) — The NFL has closed an investigation into sexual assault allegations against Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson, who is ending the season on injured reserve for the second year in a row. The league has been reviewing the case for months , trying to determine whether Watson should be punished. “The matter is closed,” league spokesman Brian McCarthy said Friday in an email to The Associated Press. “There was insufficient evidence to support a finding of a violation of the personal conduct policy.” Watson, who served an 11-game suspension in 2022, was accused of assault in Texas by a woman in September. She was seeking more than $1 million in damages before the sides reached a confidential settlement. Watson strongly denied the allegations through his attorney, Rusty Hardin. The 29-year-old Watson suffered a season-ending Achilles tendon rupture in October. He's been rehabbing the injury in hopes of returning next season. The Browns still owe Watson $46 million in each of the next two seasons after they traded three first-round picks to Houston and signed him to a five-year, fully guaranteed $230 million contract that has backfired. Watson has only played in 19 games over three seasons due to the suspension and injuries. He was acquired by the Browns, who were comfortable with his character despite Watson being accused of sexual assault and inappropriate conduct during massage therapy sessions while he played for the Texans. While he's in the clear with the league, Watson's future with Cleveland isn't so certain. His massive contract — and its salary-cap ramifications — has put the Browns in a bind in terms of trying to improve their roster. Cleveland has had a disappointing season after making the playoffs a year ago and could move on from Watson, but the cost would be exorbitant if the team just releases him. The Browns signed Jameis Winston for one season to be Watson's backup. Winston has gone 2-3 as a starter since taking over and he's put some life into Cleveland's offense, which didn't score 20 points or gain 300 yards with Watson before his injury. WASHINGTON — American Airlines briefly grounded flights nationwide Tuesday because of a technical problem just as the Christmas travel season kicked into overdrive and winter weather threatened more potential problems for those planning to fly or drive. Government regulators cleared American flights to get airborne about an hour after the Federal Aviation Administration ordered a national ground stop for the airline. The order, which prevented planes from taking off, was issued at the airline's request. The airline said in an email that the problem was caused by trouble with vendor technology that maintains its flight operating system. Dennis Tajer, a spokesperson for the Allied Pilots Association, a union representing American Airlines pilots, said the airline told pilots at 7 a.m. Eastern that there was an outage affecting the system known as FOS. It handles different types of airline operations, including dispatch, flight planning, passenger boarding, as well as an airplane's weight and balance data, he said. Some components of FOS have gone down in the past, but a systemwide outage is rare, Tajer said. Flights were delayed across American's major hubs, with only 37% leaving on time, according to Cirium, an aviation analytics company. Taking time to address his teammates is far from unprecedented, but it is noteworthy from Curry. He often uses the word “urgency,” and this was another way to try to evoke more of it. Golden State played with ample effort on Christmas Day, but couldn’t beat the Lakers even after Anthony Davis exited seven minutes into the game. They’ve lost to the Nets, Spurs, Pacers and now the Lakers without Davis or D’Angelo Russell. “We’re down,” Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said. “Everybody’s disappointed. We’ve lost some confidence, you can feel it. We had a great vibe early in the season and we’re going through it now. I love our guys. High-character guys. They care about the game. They care about each other. I believe in them, I believe we’re going to get this thing turned around.” Curry has a similar belief. The Lakers loss, while a gut punch, was a nice reminder that he can still ramp it up and take over a game in crunch time, like he did consistently during the 12-3 start. Perhaps the biggest source of optimism for the Warriors should be the status of the Western Conference. They’re currently the 10-seed, but they’re 1.5 games back of fifth place. The Thunder, Rockets and Grizzlies have separated themselves at the top of the West. The Mavericks were right there, but on Christmas lost Luka Doncic to a calf strain. The rest of the conference is up for grabs. The Warriors are certainly a candidate to snatch a real seed. Or they could keep tumbling and spiral toward the lottery. The season can go one way or another. “I still have hope, faith and confidence that we can figure it out,” Curry said. “That’s how I’m built. I feel like we can go out there and talk about it, but how you execute, how you show up on a nightly basis — the effort we’re giving, even considering what our record’s been over the last stretch — is a team that’s desperate, trying to figure it out. Tariffs (air carrier contracts) limit the compensation amounts for "loss of, damage to, or the delay in delivery of baggage or other personal property." In the case of Air Canada, the maximum payout is $1,500 per passenger in the currency of the country where the baggage was processed. To raise that limit, purchase a Declaration of Higher Value for each leg of the trip. The charge is $0.50 for each $100, in which case the payout limit is $2,500. For Delta Air Lines, passengers are entitled to up to $3,800 in baggage compensation, though how much you'll receive depends on your flight. Delta will pay up to $2,080 for delayed, lost, and damaged baggage for international travellers, almost half of what U.S. domestic passengers can claim. If your flight is marked delayed for more than 30 minutes, approach the gate agent and politely request food and hotel vouchers to be used within the airport or nearby. Different air carriers and jurisdictions have their own compensation policies when flights are delayed or cancelled. For example, under European Union rules, passengers may receive up to 600 Euros, even when travelling on a non-EU carrier. Similarly, the DOT states that travellers are entitled to a refund "if the airline cancelled a flight, regardless of the reason, and the consumer chooses not to travel." However, US rules regarding delays are complicated. Some air carriers, such as Air Canada, do not guarantee their flight schedules. They're also not liable for cancellations or changes due to "force majeure" such as weather conditions or labour disruptions. If the delay is overnight, only out-of-town passengers will be offered hotel accommodation. Nevertheless, many airlines do offer some compensation for the inconvenience. If your flight is marked delayed for more than 30 minutes, approach the gate agent and politely request food and hotel vouchers to be used within the airport or nearby. In terms of cash compensation, what you'll get can differ significantly based on things like departure location, time, carrier, and ticket class. The DOT offers a helpful delay and cancellations dashboard designed to keep travellers informed about their compensation rights. The dashboard is particularly helpful because, as the DOT states on its website, "whether you are entitled to a refund depends on a lot of factors—such as the length of the delay, the length of the flight, and your particular circumstances." The Canadian Transportation Agency is proposing air passenger protection regulations that guarantee financial compensation to travellers experiencing flight delays and cancellations, with the level of compensation varying depending on the situation and how much control the air carrier had. The proposed regulations include the following: The airline is obligated to complete the passenger's itinerary. If the new ticket is for a lower class of service, the air carrier would have to refund the cost difference; if the booking is in a higher class of service, passengers cannot be charged extra. If the passenger declines the ticket, the airline must give a full refund, in addition to the prescribed compensation. For overnight delays, the air carrier needs to provide hotel accommodation and transportation free-of-charge. Again, if you are unsatisfied, the Canadian Transportation Agency or Department of Transportation may advocate on your behalf. Passengers get bumped because airlines overbook. When this happens, the air carrier must compensate you. For international flights in the US, the rate is 200% of your one-way fare to your final destination, with a $675 maximum. If the airline does not make travel arrangements for you, the payout is 400% of your one-way fare to a maximum of $1,350. While there are a number of issues with this view – such as the implication that men are inherently unable to control their sexual impulses – it also has a critical flaw: It frames prostitution as something that only men want or need. In Japan, female sexuality is often seen through the narrow lens of heterosexual romance and motherhood. Rezu fuzoku upends this view. Rezu fuzoku , which roughly translates to “lesbian sexual entertainment,” refers to agencies where female sex workers provide sex to female clients. And in Japan, it’s entirely legal. I began investigating female-to-female commercial sex and escort services in 2023. After initially studying the phenomenon of female-to-male crossdressers offering nonsexual, romantic dates to female clients, I decided to expand the investigation to focus on clients seeking sex and romance. The names of the sex workers and clients I interviewed in my research have been changed in this article to protect their anonymity. Tapping into a niche market Unlike in many countries that historically criminalized homosexual acts, Japan only briefly outlawed them in the 1870s, during an era of rapid Western-inspired legal reforms. After that period, the country did not reintroduce laws criminalizing homosexual acts, allowing same-sex relationships to exist largely without legal interference – even if they remained frowned upon in Japanese society. Furthermore, homosexual prostitution has never been illegal. Japan did enact a strict anti-prostitution law in 1956 that bans the practice, which it exclusively defines as penetrative, paid sex between a man and a woman. As a result, any paid-for activity that falls outside of this definition – such as homosexual sex – is not considered illegal. For my research, I interviewed a man named Obo, the founder of the Lesbian Girls Club, an agency with branches in Osaka and Tokyo providing female sex workers for female clients. Obo started out his career as a web developer but soon became burned out and disillusioned. “I wanted to start my own business, and since I was building websites for several adult entertainment shops, I decided to try something similar. It quickly became clear that while the market was flooded with services for men, there were almost none for women.” So Obo opened Lesbian Girls Club in 2007, an agency arranging meetups between sex workers and female clients in hotels, rather than at a brothel. Since then, it’s become an institution in Japan, with some of his original sex workers still working for Obo. A diverse clientele Initially a niche market, rezu fuzoku gained wider attention when the manga artist Nagata Kabi used Obo’s agency and later chronicled her experience in her work “My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness.” The award-winning manga, which was also released in the U.S. and Europe, introduced the service to many Japanese women who hadn’t previously known about it. Despite the term rezu – lesbian – in the name, Obo’s agency welcomes women of all sexual orientations. “Some of our clients are lesbians,” he told me. “But many are straight, also married. Most are between 26 and 35 years old, though we also have clients in their 60s and 70s.” Many Japanese women still find it difficult to explore their sexuality and express their sexual desires, even with their partners. This often leads to unsatisfactory sexual experiences, which can pave the way for sexless relationships– something which is increasingly commonplace in Japan and a situation that many users of rezu fuzoku services shared with me. As Yuriko, a 35-year-old heterosexual client of rezu fuzoku , explained, “For the very first time I really enjoyed sex! Rezu fuzoku gave me the chance to try new things and to feel good.” Sex is wellness In my interviews, the term iyashi often popped up. It means “healing” and refers to activities or services that provide relief from daily stress and negative feelings. Just as yoga classes or massages are seen as forms of iyashi , sex – especially commercial sex – is also branded this way in Japan. “Men do not understand women and their bodies,” Yuriko said. “But sexuality is a fundamental part of life, and ignoring it only leads to frustration and dissatisfaction. Sex is iyashi .” The use of this word shows how prostitution in Japan is not always viewed as something to be ashamed of but can also be seen as a form of self-care. For instance, the practice of dispatching a sex worker to a hotel where she meets the client is called in Japanese deriheru , or delivery health, stressing the connection with the iyashi realm. Also, a 90-minute session with a professional sex worker for women is often called “wellness course,” which ties sex to physical and psychological well-being. Sex workers themselves also emphasize the connection between their occupation and iyashi practices, often referring to themselves as “therapists” or “cast” and downplaying the sexual aspects of their work, instead highlighting the wellness-related ones. Aware of the positive impact their services have on women, many of them expressed pride in their work during our interviews. “It’s rewarding,” Moe, who has been in the industry for six years, told me. “When a customer tells me she was really struggling but now feels she can try a little harder because we met, I feel glad I chose this job.” Her colleague, Makiko, agreed. “I am proud of this job. It’s very important to me, and I believe it’s quite needed in society.” Despite the widespread stigma against sex workers in Japanese society, the legal status of rezu fuzoku services offers employees greater protection and ensures clear working conditions. And as a marker of how the industry has grown, Tokyo alone is currently home to over 10 rezu fuzoku agencies, according to my research. ‘A refuge for the heart’ Yet, despite the existence of services aimed at women’s sexual well-being, gender inequality remains rampant in Japan. Women still face significant social and economic barriers. According to the World Economic Forum’s 2024 Global Gender Gap Report, Japan ranks 118th out of 146 countries for gender equality and holds the lowest position among G7 nations. By catering to women’s sexual desires outside of the traditional heterosexual framework, rezu fuzoku challenges conventional narratives about women’s sexuality. In a country that has been experiencing falling marriage and birth rates, listening to women and understanding their needs has become increasingly important. This legal form of sex work clearly fills a need, offering women a safe place to try new things and entrust their sexual pleasure to an expert – who happens to be another woman. One thing that stood out in my research was how popular the service was among women in heterosexual relationships who seemed eager to explore desires that may be difficult to share with a partner. But what female clients seek often goes beyond sex itself. NEW YORK (AP) — In a string of visits, dinners, calls, monetary pledges and social media overtures, big tech chiefs — including Apple’s Tim Cook, OpenAI’s Sam Altman, Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg and Amazon’s Jeff Bezos — have joined a parade of business and world leaders in trying to improve their standing with President-elect Donald Trump before he takes office in January. “The first term, everybody was fighting me,” Trump said in remarks at Mar-a-Lago . “In this term, everybody wants to be my friend.” Tech companies and leaders have now poured millions into his inauguration fund, a sharp increase — in most cases — from past pledges to incoming presidents. But what does the tech industry expect to gain out of their renewed relationships with Trump? Clearing the way for AI development A clue to what the industry is looking for came just days before the election when Microsoft executives — who’ve largely tried to show a neutral or bipartisan stance — joined with a close Trump ally, venture capitalist Marc Andreessen, to publish a blog post outlining their approach to artificial intelligence policy. “Regulation should be implemented only if its benefits outweigh its costs,” said the document signed by Andreessen, his business partner Ben Horowitz, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and the company’s president, Brad Smith. "This would only apply to the most thoroughly vetted college graduates who would never undercut American wages or workers."By Jason Gale | Bloomberg As COVID swept across California in early 2020, pediatric infectious diseases physician Karin Nielsen grew alarmed by the crisis erupting in maternity wards. Pregnant women were placed on life support, undergoing emergency C-sections as the virus triggered severe complications. Some died. Nielsen had just finished a research project on how the emerging infectious disease Zika was causing severe birth defects. Concerned the new coronavirus might have a similar impact, she began recruiting expectant mothers who tested positive for a new study. Soon after the study’s participants began giving birth, Nielsen’s colleagues at UCLA’s Mattel Children’s Hospital noticed an unusual number of their newborns requiring intensive care. Nielsen recalls another doctor stopping her to ask, “What’s wrong with the babies in your study?” NEXT PANDEMIC? How America lost control of the bird flu Sure enough, when researchers analyzed videos of the children lying on their backs in what’s called the General Movement Assessment, 14% of the infants showed signs of developmental problems. The test evaluates early motor functions and is often used to assess the risk of neurodevelopmental disorders including cerebral palsy. Later, during in-clinic assessments, the findings proved equally troubling. At 6-8 months old, 13 of 109 infants born to infected mothers — almost 12% — had failed to reach developmental milestones. In stark contrast, all infants in a control group born before the pandemic showed normal development. As additional participants from LA and Rio were enrolled, more unsettling results emerged. Around 11.6% of toddlers born to mothers with lab-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy showed cognitive, motor, or language problems indicative of neurodevelopmental delays. By comparison, only two of 128 unexposed controls — 1.6% — showed such issues. When the eldest of the Covid-exposed babies reached 28 months, the study found another concerning pattern: 23 of 211 children — almost 11% — screened positive for autism spectrum disorder. The finding, presented in May at a medical conference in Copenhagen, compared with an expected prevalence of 1-2% at that age, when some children begin showing signs of the condition. Around one in 36 or under 3% of children are eventually diagnosed with autism, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “There’s something really going on,” Nielsen says. “We don’t want to alarm the world, but that’s what our data are showing.” The later findings, currently undergoing peer review ahead of publication, are a reminder that Covid’s long-term consequences, including higher risks for dementia and heart disease, continue to unravel almost five years after the pandemic began. While the virus is generally known to cause more severe symptoms in adults than in children, emerging research suggests that babies exposed to Covid in utero face elevated risks for preterm birth, congenital heart abnormalities and rare conditions, such as organs developing on the opposite side of the body. Greater odds of autism from in utero exposure to Covid would add another piece to the puzzle. The connection between the virus and autism remains inconclusive: some studies align with Nielsen’s findings, while others report little to no increased risk of developmental or behavioral issues. A limitation of Nielsen’s study is its relatively small sample size, with fewer than 250 mother-baby pairs. A robust understanding of the virus’ impact would likely require research involving more than 10,000 children, says Andrea Edlow, a maternal-fetal medicine specialist at Boston’s Massachusetts General Hospital. Such large-scale research has been difficult, particularly during the most deadly waves of the pandemic when clinic restrictions and medical emergencies obstructed consistent testing. Nielsen herself is wary of raising unnecessary fears. Autism remains something of a mystery, with its exact triggers still unclear. Scientists suspect an intersection of genetic and environmental factors, but the condition comes in many forms: some children have intellectual disabilities, while others don’t but still struggle with significant behavioral problems, complicating diagnoses. Many individuals with autism also experience co-occurring health issues such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, seizures, or chronic gastrointestinal problems. In much of the world, an awareness of autism is only starting to catch on. Global autism prevalence was estimated at 1 in 127 as of 2021 in a study published last week, more than double the 1-in-271 ratio reported in 2019, and researchers say this is likely driven by increased awareness and better diagnostic practices. The lack of clear explanations has provided fertile ground for myths, including the debunked belief that vaccines cause autism.Still, scientists say Nielsen’s study warrants serious attention due to the consistency of its findings. It also stands out for its rigor: trained physicians used standardized assessment tools at multiple points in time to evaluate developmental progress rather than relying on electronic health records or parent-completed questionnaires. Children born during the Covid era are now reaching the average age for autism diagnoses. Identifying developmental issues early can open the door to speech and behavioral therapies, which are proven to support a child’s development. This makes it a critical moment to study the pandemic’s impact. Nielsen, born to a Danish father and Brazilian mother in Rio de Janeiro, where she attended medical school, has dedicated much of her career to studying how maternal infections, such as HIV and Zika, affect child health. The mosquito-borne Zika virus is known for causing cerebral palsy and microcephaly, a severe congenital brain malformation that often leads to profound intellectual and developmental disabilities. Other maternal infections such as rubella and certain herpesviruses, particularly during the first trimester, are also known to harm the fetus directly, resulting in issues such as hearing loss, cerebral palsy, and autism. From the pandemic’s onset, Nielsen sensed that Covid, too, would leave its mark. “We saw this as a new pathogen and an opportunity to investigate its impact on these babies,” Nielsen says. She soon saw parallels. In 2021, the WHO confirmed that the coronavirus could cross the placental barrier via the maternal bloodstream, placing it in the same category as viruses like rubella and Zika. Some researchers believe the damage stems from inflammation triggered by the virus or viral components crossing the placenta. But Covid also appeared to affect fetuses in a unique way. One of the earliest signs emerged in early 2021 in County Cork, Ireland, during a surge of the alpha variant. A cluster of stillbirths in the first three months of that year prompted doctors to investigate. They discovered that the placentas linked to the fetal deaths were infected with the coronavirus, describing them as riddled with lesions likely caused by viral transmission through the maternal bloodstream. Similar cases began to surface in the US and at least 10 other countries, prompting David Schwartz, an Atlanta-based epidemiologist and perinatal pathologist, to lead an investigation. The findings were startling: on average, more than three-quarters of the tissue in infected placentas had been damaged, cutting off oxygen and nutrients essential for fetal survival. Alarmingly, this damage could occur silently, even in mothers without acute Covid symptoms, offering no warning signs. “We’ve never seen anything like this with an infectious disease,” said Schwartz, a medical anthropologist and pathologist with 45 years of experience studying placentas affected by pathogens such as HIV, Ebola, yellow fever, and Zika. “So far, I feel very confident in saying this is unique to this virus.” Studies by Schwartz and Nielsen highlighted that vaccination protects mothers against Covid’s obstetric complications, particularly during waves driven by variants more likely to cause severe disease. One possible clue to explaining the higher risks of neurodevelopmental issues seen in Nielsen’s study is that Covid, particularly in unvaccinated mothers, increases the risk of preterm delivery. In the US in 2021, the rate of preterm births rose by 4% to 10.5%, the highest since at least 2007. The likelihood of stillbirths nearly doubled for American mothers with Covid compared to those who avoided infection during the pandemic’s first year and a half. Similarly, a study in England found that mothers infected with SARS-CoV-2 at delivery were more than twice as likely to experience fetal death or preterm birth. Another explanation is that prolonged fevers triggered by illnesses like the flu can impair neural development indirectly by activating the maternal immune system. This creates an inflammatory environment in the uterus that can disrupt fetal brain development. Nielsen suspects that maternal immune activation might explain the high rates of neurodevelopmental delays observed among the infants in her study. Among at least four toddlers with severe delays, blood tests taken at birth revealed biomarkers of activated microglia – the brain’s immune cells – attacking neurons. “When you see microglial activation and neuronal signaling pathways traditionally associated with autism showing up in this cohort, it suggests there’s something behind it,” she says. Scientists say the full consequences of in utero exposure to the coronavirus may take decades to uncover and understand. Even if a link is established, genetics are likely to play a crucial role, according to Mady Hornig, a physician-scientist in New York. She is also an investigator on the Autism Birth Cohort project, a collaboration between the Norwegian Institute of Public Health and Columbia University studying the development of the condition for more than 20 years. Understanding the interplay of genetics with immune activity, inflammation, and stress might help unravel why some infants may face developmental challenges, she said. Identifying the various risks “requires additional rigorous study,” Hornig said. If Nielsen’s findings do reflect broader population trends the implications could be profound. “Early neurodevelopmental disturbances have potential implications for disability throughout a lifetime,” she said.Even small increases in risk could substantially add to the global burden of chronic disease, given the sheer number of pregnancies affected. Nielsen continues to analyze stored blood and other specimens from the babies in her study. “It’s a new pathogen. We don’t know how it behaves,” she said. “Things might appear down the road that we were not expecting.”

Part of Wallace Elementary School’s first miniature sail boat made it as far as Hawaii last year after being launched in June 2022. Now, the school’s current students are building and launching their own miniboat into the Pacific Ocean. For seven years, Washington and Oregon students have built and launched unmanned 5-foot sailing vessels through Astoria’s Columbia River Maritime Museum. The program, developed in partnership with not-for-profit Educational Passages and other organizations, helps students practice STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) skills, museum Education Director Katy Menne said. Though the program’s previous goal of reaching Japan has been lowered, another Kelso elementary school’s creation is still within reach. Could the district’s latest ship make it as far? Wallace Elementary School’s latest miniboat, S/V Wolverine, was christened Dec. 19 in a dual ceremony with a vessel built by Gaston, Oregon elementary students. Almost 150 guests attended the christening, according to a post from the Columbia River Maritime Museum, including the classrooms that built the boats; Wallace’s entire fifth grade; and a Jewell, Oregon fifth and sixth grade classroom, which built a miniboat during the last school year. The two boats will also be launched together from a cargo ship departing from the Port of Vancouver this week. Students from both schools voted to launch the boats southwest of the Aleutian Islands, an island chain off the southern coast of Alaska. Their second choice of launch site was off the eastern coast of Japan. Columbia River Maritime Museum boat educator Olive DelSol, who helped guide both classes in building their boats, said she is interested to see whether they will end up in the same place or be separated by the ocean. She will continue to work with both classes to track their boats’ progress after they launch. “We know where we’re going to launch the boats, but we don’t know where they’re going to end up,” she said. When the Columbia River Maritime Museum Miniboat Program started in 2017, the goal was for unmanned 5-foot boats built by students in Washington and Oregon to reach the coast of Japan, while students in Japan sent their own boats toward America. Last year, after looking at the data from past voyages, program staff realized that might not be feasible. They shifted the goal for local schools to make landfall in any location on the Pacific Ocean. However, after the bar was lowered, a Kelso miniboat came remarkably close to reaching Japan. Barnes Elementary School’s S/V Grizzly Bear was first launched in San Diego in January. After washing up in southern California two days afterward, the boat was relaunched near Hawaii in April. In September, it passed within around 300 nautical miles of Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost main island, before drifting east again. Students from Wallace and Gaston elementary schools take S/V Wolverine, front, and S/V Greyhound 5 on a shakedown cruise to test their seaworthiness on Thursday, Dec. 19. According to GPS tracking, it is still in the area. S/V Grizzly Bear was around 1,100 nautical miles southeast of Hokkaido as of Sunday. “I’m amazed and grateful that it has continued to float for over 200 days,” DelSol said. DelSol helped build Grizzly Bear during her first year with the miniboat program. This is her second year as a boat educator, and her first time assisting with two boats at once. This year, DelSol wanted the program to focus on science and local maritime history, she said. Students learned about yearly canoe journeys taken by local tribes and the history of the Lewis and Clark expedition, as well as more technical topics like how to analyze the tracking data that the boats will send once they launch. The students also got to decide how they wanted to decorate their boats. Wolverine was named after the recently released movie “Deadpool & Wolverine,” but is not actually themed after the Marvel character, DelSol said. “That’s probably important to note,” she said. “They made their own character. They’ve just grabbed the name.” Another new aspect of the program is an increased focus on collaboration, both between current and former miniboat classrooms and between different schools. Students who have participated in the program already will now have the opportunity to leave behind advice for future classes in their school district. “This program is really alive,” DelSol said. “It’s vital. Nagpur: The rise of cybercrime has taken a significant toll on Nagpurians, with total losses amounting to Rs 50 crore in 2024, as per data released by the city's cyber cell. However, the cyber cell has managed to retrieve over Rs 30 crore, with approximately 13.1% of the recovered amount already returned to victims. DCP Lohit Matani explained the process involved in retrieving and returning the money. "Once the money is retrieved from the criminals, victims must obtain a court order to claim it. So far, Rs 3.7 crore has been returned to victims, while Rs 28.5 crore remains pending," Matani stated. He highlighted the use of the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCCRP), which plays a key role in combating cybercrime. The protocol connects telecom companies, banks, and law enforcement agencies. "When a suspicious transaction occurs, telecom companies or banks alert us with details of the portal involved. The information, including linked bank account details, is uploaded to the NCCRP along with a complaint ID," Matani explained. The cybercrime complaint is then forwarded to the respective police station for further investigation and action. "Our main goal in such cases is to retrieve the defrauded amount as quickly as possible," he added. Matani also pointed out the challenges in tracking cybercriminals, who often use advanced technology to remain anonymous. "Many cybercriminals use VPNs, fake bank accounts, and identity theft to cover their tracks, making it difficult to identify and apprehend them," he said. Matani assured that the cyber cell has state-of-the-art infrastructure to battle cybercrimes. "However, with the increasing sophistication of cybercriminals, authorities urge citizens to exercise caution while conducting online transactions to avoid falling victim to scams," he said. Earlier, CM Devendra Fadnavis, who is also the home minister, highlighted the perils of AI and cyber crimes, and added that the state has the necessary infrastructure to deal with the issue. By ERIC TUCKER WASHINGTON (AP) — A ninth U.S. telecoms firm has been confirmed to have been hacked as part of a sprawling Chinese espionage campaign that gave officials in Beijing access to private texts and phone conversations of an unknown number of Americans, a top White House official said Friday. Biden administration officials said this month that at least eight telecommunications companies , as well as dozens of nations, had been affected by the Chinese hacking blitz known as Salt Typhoon. But Anne Neuberger, the deputy national security adviser for cyber and emerging technologies, told reporters Friday that a ninth victim had been identified after the administration released guidance to companies about how to hunt for Chinese culprits in their networks. The update from Neuberger is the latest development in a massive hacking operation that has alarmed national security officials, exposed cybersecurity vulnerabilities in the private sector and laid bare China’s hacking sophistication.
