Nestled in the misty hills of Sri Lanka’s Uva Province is a living piece of Pure Ceylon Tea history in the form of Dambatenne Estate. Sprawling across the verdant slopes of Haputale, this iconic estate holds the legacy of one of the most famous names in tea — Sir Thomas Lipton. Dambatenne estate is a place where past and present converge, offering visitors a unique window into the origins of Sri Lanka’s tea industry and the enduring global reputation it continues to command. Together with the father of Ceylon Tea himself, James Taylor whom at the time of Lipton’s arrival in then Ceylon, had already established Sri Lanka’s very first commercial tea plantation and factory at Loolecondera Estate, the duo set about the development of Pure Ceylon Tea that continues to form the foundation of the brand today. Walking the estate’s picturesque paths today, to the scenic bungalow in which Sir Lipton himself resided – that is still maintained in pristine condition 134 years later, visitors trace the footsteps of a pioneer whose passion for tea reshaped Sri Lanka’s economy and revolutionised how the world consumes tea. The birth of a tea empire: Sir Thomas Lipton’s vision Founded in 1890, Dambatenne Estate was selected by Sir Thomas Lipton for its ideal tea-growing conditions: cool temperatures, rich soil, and abundant rainfall. Lipton’s visionary approach transformed these remote Sri Lankan highlands into a powerhouse of tea production, kindling a global tea empire that helped make high quality tea accessible to millions. Lipton recognised the unique advantages of Dambatenne estate to produce tea leaves of exceptional quality almost instantly. His radical approach of bypassing the expensive brokers controlling the tea trade allowed him to bring tea “directly from the garden to the teapot”, while still making it affordable for the average consumer. This ground-breaking model laid the foundation for Lipton Tea, a global giant in tea that has been synonymous with quality, affordability, and innovation for generations. Today, Dambatenne Estate spans a total of 873 hectares, including 376 hectares of tea and 183 hectares of forestry and high conservation sensitive areas. Following significant investments in replanting, over 74% of the estate’s tea is now vegetatively propagated, which has significantly increased the production of tea. The estate’s rich history and legacy continue into the present day, with locations like the iconic Lipton seat remaining carefully preserved a tourist hotspot. Famed as Sir Thomas Lipton’s favourite vantage point, Lipton’s Seat offers stunning panoramic views of multiple provinces including Handapanagala Lake and Udawalawe Lake. These sites are also being strategically developed, with a new tea centre being established at the location, to offer visitors from across the globe a chance to savour the living heritage of Dambatenne estate at the very same location as Sir Thomas Lipton himself. For over a century, the estate has infused care and craftsmanship into every batch of tea it has produced, standing as a living testament to Lipton’s enduring legacy and the estate’s pivotal role in the rich history of Ceylon tea. A modern icon of tradition and innovation Dambatenne remains at the forefront of Sri Lanka’s tea industry, it skilfully blends tradition with modern advancements. The estate adheres to the highest international quality standards, including Rainforest Alliance, ISO 22000:2018, and ISO 9001:2015, reaffirming its commitment to excellence. Similarly, the company has embarked on a strict polythene-free policy within the property, while investing significantly in hydropower, solar, and biomass renewable energy. The factory at Dambatenne is a remarkable feature of the estate, being the longest tea factory in Sri Lanka. Situated at elevations ranging from 1,560 meters to 1,970 meters above sea level, the estate enjoys ideal conditions for cultivating high-quality tea leaves that contribute to its exceptional output. It produces an impressive 700,000 to 1 million kilograms of tea annually, showcasing the scale and efficiency of Dambatenne’s operations while maintaining the highest quality standards. The estate also manages 183 hectares of forestry and environmentally sensitive areas, including 126.47 hectares of timber plantations located at high elevations above 5000 ft. MSL. These areas are not only important for conservation but are also being considered for sustainable timber harvesting and ecotourism opportunities. The potential for utilising forest areas for ecotourism, such as introducing cabins within these scenic locations, has been recognised as an exciting prospect for sustainable tourism moving forward. Innovation plays a pivotal role in the estate’s operations today. Automated machinery has enhanced harvesting efficiency, ensuring minimal environmental impact. Dambatenne’s focus on eco-friendly production is further supported by comprehensive waste management initiatives, which include composting. These efforts underscore the estate’s leadership in sustainable tea production. In hand with technological advancements, Dambatenne continues to honour its century-old traditions. The estate’s tea-making process respects the time-tested methods introduced over a period of time, creating a harmonious blend of innovation and heritage. This careful balance ensures that Dambatenne’s tea continues to captivate tea enthusiasts worldwide, offering a sip of history in every cup. Building communities beyond the tea leaves Dambatenne’s influence extends beyond tea production; it is a vital part of the local community. As one of the largest employers in the region, the estate has played a pivotal role in uplifting local families through fair labour practices, skills development, and community empowerment. Dambatenne’s investment in corporate social responsibility initiatives is another cornerstone of its legacy. From offering scholarships to supporting local schools, the estate ensures access to quality education for the workers’ children. The estate’s commitment to its workforce is reflected in several initiatives aimed at improving their daily lives. Tea harmony centres have been established in each division, providing workers with comfortable spaces for rest during their workday. The estate is also in the process of constructing field toilets for workers, further enhancing their working conditions. Workers are equipped with personal protective gear, including wellington boots, goggles, and protective clothing, ensuring their safety and wellbeing. In addition, annual health scans are conducted for all workers, with referrals to specialised medical attention when necessary, underscoring the estate’s dedication to comprehensive healthcare. Recognising the importance of nurturing future generations, Dambatenne provides midday meals to children at the crèches located within the estate. Dental clinics are also organised specifically for children, ensuring their oral health is prioritised. Furthermore, the estate management offers a monthly grant to the children of workers who are selected for local universities, encouraging educational aspirations and higher learning among its community. The estate’s contributions to infrastructure such as housing, sanitation improvements, clean water systems, and access roads, have enhanced the quality of life within the estate and the surrounding villages. The estate also recognises the potential for further expanding tourism, including the development of a tea centre at Dambatenne, which will further contribute to community development and economic growth. A legacy of tradition and innovation Echoing the larger Sri Lankan tea industry’s challenges, Dambatenne also faces fluctuating global tea prices and labour shortages. Yet, the estate’s forward-thinking approach has turned these challenges into opportunities, including the use of automated machinery prioritising mechanical harvesting. Dambatenne Estate stands out as more than just a tea plantation — it is a living symbol of Sri Lanka’s rich tea heritage and a beacon of progress in sustainable agriculture. From its humble beginnings under Sir Thomas Lipton to its current standing as a leader in eco-friendly tea production, Dambatenne’s commitment to quality, innovation, and community remains unwavering.TikTok mom vlogger arrested after posting videos with stolen Target goods
The PGA Tour announced its schedule of seven post-season tournaments for the fall of 2025 on Tuesday with no Las Vegas event on the calendar for the first time since 1983. The lineup is one fewer than this year and tees off with the Procore Championship in Napa, California, on September 11-14, two weeks after the 2025 Tour Championship. Absent from the schedule is the Shriners Children's Open in Las Vegas. After the Ryder Cup next September at Bethpage Black, the PGA Tour events resume with the Sanderson Farms Championship on October 2-5. The PGA Tour's Japan stop, the Baycurrent Classic, will be October 9-12 at Yokohama Country Club followed by the Black Desert Championship on October 23-26 in Utah. The World Wide Technology Championship at Los Cabos, Mexico, will be November 6-9 followed the next week by the Bermuda Championship and the RSM Classic on November 20-23 at Sea Island, Georgia. "With events in four US states, Japan, Mexico and Bermuda, the conclusion to the 2025 golf calendar promises to be exciting for our fans worldwide," said Tyler Dennis, PGA Tour chief competitions officer. Under tighter qualifying rules for the 2026 PGA Tour approved by the Player Advisory Council last month, only the top 70 players in the FedEx Cup standings will secure exempt status with the 50 who reach next year's BMW Championship being exempt into signature events for 2026. Those ranked 51st and beyond will take FedEx Cup points into the fall to try and accumulate eligibility points for the 2026 campaign. Three PGA Tour Challenge season events will be played next December -- the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas hosted by Tiger Woods, the LPGA-PGA mixed-team Grant Thornton Invitational and the PNC Championship parent-child event. Tour commissioner Jay Monahan also announced Tuesday that the PGA is searching for a new chief executive officer whose job would be to grow the business side of the operation in light of the $1.5 billion investment in PGA Tour Enterprises by Strategic Sports Group, a set of team sports owners. js/bbBy Derek B. Johnson December 23, 2024 The State Department’s center for fighting global disinformation received a lump of coal in its Christmas stocking this week as congressional lawmakers excluded new funding and authorization for the office beyond this year. The Global Engagement Center, which tracks foreign disinformation, will lose its authority on Dec. 24. Despite a concerted push by State officials to lobby Congress for an extension, a measure to extend the center’s authority into 2031 was stripped out of the final version of defense authorization legislation that passed through the Senate. “The Global Engagement Center will terminate by operation of law [by the end of the day] on December 23, 2024,” a State Department spokesperson told CyberScoop in an email. “The Department of State has consulted with Congress regarding next steps.” According to figures provided by State, the GEC has a staff of approximately 120 and an annual budget of $61 million. The spokesperson did not address questions about what will happen to the center’s personnel and technology following the closure. The shuttering will leave the State Department without a dedicated office for countering disinformation abroad for the first time since 2016. The closure comes at the end of a year when U.S. officials, foreign political leaders and private companies tracking disinformation have alleged that Russia and China have engaged in concerted propaganda campaigns targeting democratic elections in Taiwan , Moldova , Georgia , Romania and other countries. “This is extremely frustrating,” Mark Montgomery, former executive director of the Cyberspace Solarium and a supporter of extending the center’s authority, told CyberScoop. “On a bipartisan basis, both political parties know that Russia, China and, to a lesser degree, Iran and other non-state actors, conduct information operations against us spreading lies, and the GEC was a good tool for ensuring that the truth, as we see it, came out.” While the center does not focus on disinformation targeting the United States, its work with related organizations faced criticism from congressional Republicans and Elon Musk, who accused the center in 2023 of being “the worst offender in U.S. government censorship [and] media manipulation.” Musk is now an adviser to President-elect Donald Trump and was placed in charge of an advisory board for cutting programs and reducing government spending. Additionally, Republicans on the Hill raised questions about the GEC’s value, suggesting its work might duplicate existing analysis from the private sector and other parts of government. In interviews with CyberScoop and FedScoop last month, GEC leaders pushed back on those views, calling their work “critical” to combatting foreign propaganda campaigns in allied countries and emphasizing that they take active steps to exclude data on U.S. persons from their analysis. “We are really the first analytical unit in the U.S. government that takes this kind of comprehensive approach of looking at threat actors — Iranians, [China], the Russians — and try to understand ... what their influence is broadly on the information space in different geographic regions,” said Carrie Goux, GEC’s acting deputy coordinator. Lindsay Gorman, a former White House official under the Biden administration, told CyberScoop that there is “a lack of recognition in Congress that the wars democracies are fighting with autocrats overseas are no longer only in the physical domain, but in the cyberspace realm of 1s and 0s.” “Whether their goal is to marshal support for invading neighbors or undermine U.S. credibility overseas, the U.S. needs a means to fight back. One way is to expose covert campaigns for what they are — important work the GEC is doing,” said Gorman, now at the nonprofit German Marshall Fund. “GEC has been the eyes and ears on the ground when it comes to information threats overseas, tracking where autocratic strategic objectives lie and how tactics are evolving to guide responses.” Gorman stressed that Russian and Chinese disinformation campaigns “aren’t going away” and are increasingly leveraging social media and emerging technologies like generative AI “to sow discord and undermine democracy around the world.” GEC officials also said their limited budget has hindered efforts to acquire advanced technology needed to support their work, including tools to detect AI-manipulated media. State Department documents obtained by FedScoop detail a range of solutions and tools the center hoped to acquire if it was reauthorized, including a system for detecting photoshopped images, a “meme detection” model to help analyze and contextualize imagery, a detector for imagery created through Stable Diffusion, and a tool to detect AI-generated assets in video. Montgomery said that with Republicans set to take control of the State Department and both houses of Congress next month, they are positioned to shape the GEC’s mission and operations to address any concerns about impinging on domestic U.S. issues. “The frustration is, why not give it an extension now that you’re basically responsible?” Montgomery asked.

NonePatrick Mahomes was pumped up when the NFL schedule was released and he saw his Kansas City Chiefs were playing on Christmas Day for the second straight season. His excitement lasted for only a short time. "Until I realized it was on Wednesday," Mahomes said Monday. Plenty of sore bodies will take the field Wednesday when the Chiefs (14-1) visit the Pittsburgh Steelers (10-5) in what will be the third game in 11 days for both teams. Both squads just played on Saturday. The Chiefs posted a 27-19 home win over the Houston Texans and the Steelers fell 34-17 to the host Baltimore Ravens. "You're not going to feel great," Mahomes said of the short week. "That's kind of just what it is. You don't make excuses in this league. You go out and play football, and you fight until the very end, and you try to get a win at the end of the day. "You're motivated to play a great football team, to play in Pittsburgh in a great environment, a great stadium. It'll be rocking playing on Christmas, so everybody's going to be watching." If Kansas City wins Wednesday, it clinches the No. 1 seed and home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs. The Chiefs have 14 victories for the third time in the past five seasons. The franchise has never won 15 games in a season. Kansas City hasn't committed a single turnover during its five-game winning streak. Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson isn't fond of hearing "turnover" after he made two big mistakes in Saturday's loss to the Ravens. Wilson lost a fumble after a 19-yard gain to the Baltimore 4-yard line in the second quarter and later was intercepted by Marlon Humphrey, who returned it 37 yards for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Wilson called it "unacceptable" and now has his focus on making amends against Kansas City. "I don't think there's enough time to really sulk or worry or fear," Wilson said. " ... The one thing I'm not going to do is keep my head down, though. I know for us we got so much great confidence in who we are and what we can do and how we're going to respond. "We can't let a tough game like this take us into a negative state of mind because there's a lot more to play for and a lot more we're searching for, and we can still win the (AFC) North." Wilson is correct. If the Steelers win their final two regular-season games, they will win their division. They would have clinched it last weekend if they had won in Baltimore. Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin is hardly concerned about Wilson's miscues. It was the veteran signal-caller's first time committing multiple turnovers in nine games with the team. "He's tough on himself because he's got a desire to be great," Tomlin said. "He wants to lead us to victory. He owns that. I don't expect that to be an issue in terms of his readiness or trajectory of this week." Cornerback Joey Porter Jr. (knee) and receiver Ben Skowronek (hip) missed Pittsburgh's walkthrough on Monday. Standout receiver George Pickens (hamstring) was a full participant and may return after missing the past three games. Safety DeShon Elliott (hamstring), cornerback Donte Jackson (back) and defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi (groin) also could return to action. Jackson's return would be big if Porter can't play. Kansas City also held a walkthrough on Monday. Left tackle D.J. Humphries (hamstring), safety Chamarri Conner (concussion) and star defensive end Chris Jones (calf) missed the session. Jones was injured against Houston. Meanwhile, Mahomes said his sore ankle is feeling better than it did last week. The Chiefs lost 20-14 to the visiting Las Vegas Raiders on Christmas Day last season. Kansas City has won the past three meetings with the Steelers, including a 42-21 rout in an AFC wild-card game on Jan. 16, 2022. --Field Level MediaPrice Over Earnings Overview: Core Molding Technologies

All rights reserved.* Dollar gains, with Treasury yields * Global stock index up, Wall St indexes close higher * Consumer confidence comes in light, capital goods rise By Sinéad Carew and Amanda Cooper NEW YORK/LONDON, - A global equity index rose on Monday with help from Wall Street, and U.S. Treasury yields climbed to an almost seven-month high while data showed a deterioration in U.S. consumer confidence and investors prepared for fewer Federal Reserve rate cuts in 2025. In U.S. equities, Nasdaq and the S&P 500 were boosted mostly by rallies in megacap technology stocks such as Nvidia Corp and Broadcom Inc. Earlier, the Conference Board said its U.S. consumer confidence index weakened in December to 104.7 versus economist expectations for an increase to 113.3 and November's upwardly revised 112.8 on concerns about future business conditions. While new orders for key U.S.-manufactured capital goods rose in November amid strong demand for machinery, orders of durable goods, ranging from toasters to aircraft, dropped 1.1% after increasing 0.8% in October, with declines mostly reflecting weakness in commercial aircraft orders. Citing weak consumer confidence as a key negative for equities on Monday, Robert Phipps, a director at Per Stirling Capital Management, highlighted the 10-year Treasury yield's jump to its highest level since late May. "It's important for equity investors that the 4.6% level holds for 10-year Treasury yields and if we break above it there's a risk the market will go ahead and test 5%," he said, pointing to a slowing in Fed rate cuts as the reason. "The market is adjusting to a less dovish Fed policy," said Phipps, noting U.S. indexes looked weaker under the hood besides the rallies in heavyweight stocks. "It is a deceptively strong market," he said. On Wall Street, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 66.69 points, or 0.16%, to 42,906.95, the S&P 500 rose 43.22 points, or 0.73%, to 5,974.07 and the Nasdaq Composite rose 192.29 points, or 0.98%, to 19,764.89. MSCI's gauge of stocks across the globe rose 5.51 points, or 0.65%, to 849.74 while earlier, Europe's STOXX 600 index finished up 0.14%. Ahead of Tuesday's shorter trading day and Wednesday's market close for Christmas, Tim Ghriskey, senior portfolio strategist at Ingalls & Snyder said investors still had last Wednesday's steep sell-off on their minds after the Fed clearly signalled for fewer rate cuts next year. "There's concern about the economy. There's concern about the Fed making a wrong move and there's the great unknown of what Trump is actually going to do," said Ghriskey, referring to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's Jan. 20 inauguration. In U.S. Treasuries, 10-year yields hit their highest level since late May as the Treasury Department this week sells short- and intermediate-dated debt. The yield on benchmark U.S. 10-year notes rose 6.7 basis points to 4.591%, from 4.524% late on Friday, while the 30-year bond yield rose 6.3 basis points to 4.7791%. A $69 billion two-year notes sale was met with healthy demand on Monday for the first auction of $183 billion in coupon-bearing supply this week. The 2-year note yield, which typically moves in step with interest rate expectations for the Fed, rose 3 basis points to 4.342%, from 4.312% late on Friday. In currencies, the dollar rebounded while the euro fell as recent global central bank meetings set expectations for diverging rate cut paths in the year ahead. The dollar index, measuring the greenback against a basket of major currencies, rose 0.27% to 108.08. The euro was down 0.22% at $1.0406 and against the Japanese yen, the dollar strengthened 0.45% to 157.12. Elsewhere, Sterling weakened 0.31% to $1.253 and Mexico's peso < MXN=> weakened 0.6% versus the dollar. Oil prices settled down slightly in thin trade before the holiday with concerns about a supply surplus next year and a strengthened dollar. U.S. crude settled down 0.32%, or 22 cents at $69.24 a barrel and Brent fell to $72.63 per barrel, down 0.43%, or 31 cents on the day. Gold prices edged lower in subdued holiday-season trading, weighed by a robust dollar and high U.S. Treasury yields. Spot gold fell 0.39% to $2,610.66 an ounce. U.S. gold futures fell 0.67% to $2,611.10 an ounce. PUBLICIDAD This was stated by Sheinbaum in a letter she will send to Trump on Tuesday, in which she expressed that "the migration phenomenon, nor the drug consumption in the United States, will not be addressed with threats or tariffs", but she warned that "one tariff will lead to another in response, and so on until we put common companies at risk." PUBLICIDAD "Why impose a tax that puts them at risk?" asked the president in the letter when discussing the consequences that an increase in tariffs could have for American automakers such as General Motors and Ford Motors Company - which have plants in Mexico - and said that it is "unacceptable and would cause inflation and job losses in the United States and Mexico." Sheinbaum advocated for dialogue and "cooperation and mutual understanding" to strengthen North America economically and ensure that the region remains more competitive against other economic blocs. He expanded on that idea in his morning conference where he announced that in addition to the letter, they will seek a phone conversation with Trump to arrange a meeting as soon as possible. "We must put everything on the table. But if we focus on coordination, collaboration to be able to address in a profound way the migration phenomenon, the problem of the humanitarian crisis they have in the United States due to fentanyl consumption, then it will be addressed comprehensively," stated the president. In a series of posts on his Truth Social social media platform, Trump said on Monday that he would impose a 25% tax on all products entering the country from Canada and Mexico and an additional 10% tariff on goods from China. The president-elect stated that the new tariffs would remain in place "until we stop this invasion of drugs, particularly fentanyl, and all illegal foreigners in our country." It is not clear whether Trump will actually carry out the threats or if he is using them as a negotiation tactic before taking office in January. When refuting the arguments put forward by Trump, Sheinbaum stated that according to figures from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), encounters with migrants at the U.S. southern border have decreased by 75% from December 2023 to November of this year. She also mentioned that half of the foreigners arriving at that border did so through a legally granted appointment under the CBP One program established by the Democratic administration of Joe Biden. During her morning conference, the Mexican president highlighted the efforts that Mexico has made to address the migration issue and expressed that "perhaps President Trump is not aware of this." Sheinbaum also highlighted the actions that Mexican authorities have taken to combat fentanyl trafficking and pointed out that synthetic drugs enter the United States, Canada, and Mexico "illegally from Asian countries," emphasizing the need for international collaboration. Likewise, he reiterated Mexico's complaints about the illegal trafficking of weapons coming from the United States, which he estimated at 70%, and the impact that this generates in the escalation of violence. "The deaths caused by crime to meet the demand for drugs in your country unfortunately fall on us," he recalled. If the threat made by the Republican Trump were to materialize, the impact would be felt especially in the United States with a drastic increase in prices of various products, from gasoline and automobiles to agricultural products. But Mexico would not escape the economic aftermath. The first effects were felt on Tuesday in the foreign exchange market. The Mexican currency started the day with a depreciation of 1.08% against the dollar, which brought the exchange rate to around 20.52 pesos per dollar. Cross-border trade between Mexico and the United States is currently at its best, with transactions exceeding 800 billion dollars annually.

Former President Bill Clinton speaks onstage during The New York Times Dealbook Summit 2024 at Jazz at Lincoln Center on December 04, 2024 in New York City. (Photo by Eugene Gologursky/Getty Images for The New York Times) Former President Bill Clinton was admitted to Georgetown University Medical Center for observation after developing a fever but remains in good spirits. Clinton, 78, has faced multiple health issues in the past, including a quadruple bypass, lung surgery, and stent implants. Fevers are typically the body's response to fighting infections and often resolve once the illness subsides, according to medical experts. WASHINGTON - Former President Bill Clinton was admitted to a Washington, D.C. hospital for a fever Monday, according to his Deputy Chief of Staff. "President Clinton was admitted to Georgetown University Medical Center this afternoon for testing and observation after developing a fever," Angel Ureña posted on social media . "He remains in good spirits and deeply appreciates the excellent care he is receiving." According to Cleveland Clinic, a fever "is when your body temperature is higher than your normal average temp. Most providers say a fever is either 100.0 F (37.8 C) or 100.4 F (38 C)." Bill Clinton delivers remarks on night 3 of the 2024 Democratic National Convention. "When you have a fever, it’s your body’s normal response to fighting an infection or illness. Fevers usually aren’t a serious concern. They typically go away when the infection passes," the hospital added. In October 2021, the 78-year-old was hospitalized for urological infection . In the years since Clinton left the White House in 2001, the former president has faced health scares. In 2004, he underwent quadruple bypass surgery after experiencing prolonged chest pains and shortness of breath. He returned to the hospital for surgery for a partially collapsed lung in 2005, and in 2010 he had a pair of stents implanted in a coronary artery. He responded by embracing a largely vegan diet that saw him lose weight and report improved health. He repeatedly returned to the stump, campaigning for Democratic candidates, mostly notably his wife, Hillary, during her failed 2008 bid for the presidential nomination. And in 2016, as Hillary Clinton sought the White House as the Democratic nominee, Bill Clinton — by then a grandfather and nearing 70 — returned to the campaign trail. Clinton, a Democrat who served two terms as president from January 1993 until January 2001, addressed the Democratic National Convention in Chicago this summer and campaigned ahead of November's election for the unsuccessful White House bid of Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris . The Associated Press contributed to this report. The information in this story also came from a social media post by Bill Clinton's Deputy Chief of Staff, Angel Ureña. This story was reported from Los Angeles.
Elizabeth Pollard, 64, was found dead four days after reportedly falling into a sinkhole linked to an abandoned coal mine in Marguerite, Pennsylvania. Pollard had gone out to look for her cat and had been missing since Monday night. When she did not come home, her family filed a missing person's report. She fell into a 30-foot (9-meter) sinkhole that was part of an abandoned mine, according to investigators. The search was made more difficult by the unstable and dangerous sinkhole. By Wednesday, Westmoreland County officials had changed the objective from rescue to recovery. Search crews were concerned that while they were working, the mine would collapse much further. By Thursday, Pennsylvania State Police and other emergency personnel were carefully clearing the sinkhole of rubble. The recovery strategy called for clearing the location of soil while meticulously searching it for possible evidence, such technological devices or personal things. Trooper Steve Limani described the procedure, stressing the significance of locating anything that could offer more information on the mishap. Searchers used sophisticated equipment, such as cameras and electrical gadgets, but at first they were unable to locate Pollard. Additionally, water was used to remove clay and debris from the area. The state of the mine, which stopped operations in the middle of the 20th century, presented difficulties for rescue crews. The community's dedication to locating Pollard was evident in the more than 100 participants in the diligent search. When the Westmoreland County Coroner verified the finding of her remains on Thursday, their efforts came to an end. According to the American Geosciences Institute, sinkholes are common in a number of U.S. states, including Pennsylvania. The changing terrain over abandoned mines increases the risk. Similar events connected to abandoned mining activities have already occurred in the Marguerite region, where Pollard resided. Get Latest News Live on Times Now along with Breaking News and Top Headlines from US News, World and around the world.Several times following New England’s 24-21 loss to the Buffalo Bills, Patriots coach Jerod Mayo said he wanted to review the game film before making a final assessment of his team’s performance. He did, and on Monday he said the overarching feeling he was left with was one of pride. Going toe-to-toe with one of the best teams in the NFL is commendable. Mayo also remains confident this group has even more room for growth over its final two games this season. “To be frank, I don’t believe in good losses,” Mayo said. “I think there’s a lot to learn from the game. Look, we’re headed in the right direction, but it’s all about consistency, and we have to do that on a down-after-down, a game-after-game basis to be successful in this league.” What is also clear is that despite their 3-12 record, Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye wants people to know that he and his teammates believe in their coach. No matter what conversations might be going on outside the Patriots locker room regarding shortcomings by the coaching staff, or Mayo’s job status. “We’ve got his back, and he’s coached us hard. He wants to win. We all want to win. We’re all frustrated,” Maye said. “We’re just plays away, and it’s basically me turning the ball over. I think it’s just a testament to these guys that keep fighting. We keep fighting. Shoot, we’re not going to make the playoffs; we’re out of the race, and these guys are coming in, frustrated when we don’t score. ... So, I think we’re building something good, building something that feels right here, and I’m proud to be a Patriot.” What’s working The Patriots entered the week scoring only 7.5 points per game in the first half this season, which ranked 29th in the NFL. The offense woke up with 14 points in the first half on Sunday, notching multiple offensive touchdowns in the first half for the first time in 2024. What needs help Stopping the run has been an issue for New England’s defense for most of the season and it was on display against the Bills. With Buffalo trailing 14-0 in the second quarter, running back James Cook sliced through the interior of the Patriots defense and broke free for a 46-yard TD run. It was a big chunk of Buffalo’s 172 yards on the ground for the game. Stock up CB Jonathan Jones. He was tasked with being the primary defender on Buffalo’s top receiver Khalil Shakir for most of the game. The veteran held his own, helping limit the Bills’ leader in catches and receiving yards to only two catches for 22 yards on six targets. Jones also forced a fumble by Shakir in the fourth quarter, though Shakir was able to recover it. Stock down Marte Mapu. The linebacker started at safety with Jabrill Peppers sidelined with a hamstring injury. Mapu was strong for most of the game and had a chance to set up the Patriots offense in the second quarter when he snagged his second career interception, picking off Josh Allen’s pass in the end zone. But Mapu decided to run the ball out of the end zone and was tackled on the New England 1-yard line. The poor starting field position eventually led to a punt and the Patriots couldn’t add to their 14-7 lead. Injuries The Patriots didn’t announce any injuries during the game. But along with Peppers, cornerback Marcus Jones also sat out with a hip injury. Key number 2-6 — The Patriots’ record in one-score games this season. Four of those have been by three or fewer points. Next steps The Patriots host the Los Angeles Chargers on Saturday. ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl Kyle Hightower, The Associated Press
