Broncos Mailbag: Is Sean Payton dragging his feet on making Audric Estime Denver’s lead running back?An inquest jury has made a series of recommendations for the improved supervision and care of vulnerable young people after recording a verdict of suicide in the death of Sinéad O’Connor's son, Shane. The body of Shane O’Connor, aged 17, was found in a secluded area at the back of a housing estate outside Bray, Co Wicklow on January 7, 2022 less than 24 hours after he was reported missing from Tallaght University Hospital (TUH) at a time when he was supposed to be under supervised 24/7 one-to-one care. A sitting of Dublin District Coroner’s Court heard the teenager had been brought to TUH’s emergency department by his mother on December 29, 2021 after a drug overdose, in what was believed to be an attempted suicide. The inquest heard staff were not available to provide the 24/7 supervision prescribed by the hospital’s doctors. Evidence at the time stated he had absconded from TUH on the morning of January 6, 2022. A senior social worker with Tusla, Joyce Connolly, told the second day of the inquest that Shane and his mother had a “complex and turbulent” relationship but were also very close and “in some way dependent on each other throughout their lives.” Ms Connolly said the singer hoped to resume full-time care of her son and there were ongoing discussions to see if that might be possible. Ms O’Connor, who formally identified her son’s body to gardaí, died suddenly just 18 months later in London. A coroner ruled that she died of natural causes. What's your view on this issue? You can tell us here The inquest heard Shane had been under the care of Tusla since 2015 and had been fostered by his half-brother, Jake Reynolds — the late singer’s eldest child — and his partner, Lia Petcu, between July 2016 and May 2018, before being placed in residential care facilities. Asked about rules on what Shane could do when he had chosen not to engage in education, Ms Connolly said a “delicate balance” had to be struck, but they had power to stop him leaving to do what he wished. Ms Connolly said a committee sat on January 4, 2022 to consider applying for a special care order for Shane — which would have given Tusla power to deprive the teenager of his liberty — but deferred a decision as it did not have a report from the HSE’s Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS). However, Ms Connolly said she believed Shane’s needs were more “of a mental health nature.” She said the teenager would have been actively encouraged to attend addiction treatment services but it was “an unfortunate factor” that he did not want to stop consuming cannabis. Ms Connolly noted that he had indicated that his life was better when he was using the drug. However, she said childcare authorities also had no powers to prevent him accessing such substances. Asked about possible improvements that could be made, she recommended “greater work on relationship-building” between the various State agencies involved in the care of young people. Aoife Scanlon, a manager of the New Beginnings residential care centre in Newbridge, Co Kildare where Shane had lived since March 2019, said he had settled in well to the facility for the first year. However, the inquest heard the teenager seemed to deteriorate from July 2021, although Ms Scanlon said she could identify no particular trigger for it. New Beginnings later informed Tusla that it no longer felt it could provide safe accommodation for Shane because of his complex mental health needs. Ms Scanlon said they had continued to support him by providing staff to assist TUH and Shane’s father, Donal Lunny — a leading folk musician — with 24/7 supervision of Shane after his admission to the hospital. The inquest heard New Beginnings stopped assisting with such supervision under covid-19 guidelines after Shane was deemed a close contact when Mr Lunny tested positive for the virus on January 4, 2022. Ms Scanlon fought back tears as she recalled Shane as “a lovely, lovely lad.” She observed that he had found approaching his 18th birthday “a very daunting experience” as he would no longer have access to specialist health and welfare services for young people. A psychiatrist who had treated Shane at the Linn Dara in-patient psychiatric unit at Cherry Orchard Hospital in Ballyfermot, Dublin, Tara Rudd said the teenager’s substance misuse had caused his mental health problems. The inquest heard that Camhs had requested that Shane be kept at Linn Dara for the final three months before reaching his 18th birthday. A jury of six men and two women made a series of recommendations including that all HSE hospitals should have clear protocols for the close supervision of vulnerable patients, particularly children. They also called for a review of protocols for reporting missing people to ensure that gardaí would accept such reports from family members, Tusla, and medical staff.
Aaron Rodgers suggests a 'curse' might be the reason for the Jets' losing waysAnd single people are more likely to use mobility tools compared to those who are married, according to researchers from University College London (UCL) and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). Researchers looked at information from a group of more than 12,000 adults in England aged 50 to 89 who were tracked over a 13-year period. At the start of the study, 8,225 adults had no mobility difficulty and did not use mobility assistive products (MAPs). Some 2,480 were deemed to have “unmet need” and 1,375 were using mobility aids. During the follow-up period, there were 2,313 “transitions” where people went from having no mobility issues to needing some help with getting around. And 1,274 people started to use mobility aids. Compared with men, women were 49% more likely to transition from not needing mobility aids to needing to use them, according to the study which has been published in The Lancet Public Health. But were 21% less likely to go on to use mobility aids when they needed them. The authors said their study showed “barriers to access” for women. For both men and women, with every year that passed during the study period the need for mobility aids increased. People who were older, less educated, less wealthy or reported being disabled were more likely to “transition from no need to unmet need, and from unmet need to use”, the authors said, with this indicating a “higher prevalence of mobility limitations and MAP need overall among these groups”. They added: “Finally, marital or partnership status was not associated with transitioning to unmet need; however, single people were more likely to transition from unmet need to use compared with married or partnered people.” Jamie Danemayer, first author of the study from UCL Computer Science and UCL’s Global Disability Innovation Hub, said: “Our analysis suggests that there is a clear gender gap in access to mobility aids. “Though our data didn’t ascertain the reason why participants weren’t using mobility aids, other research tells us that women are often more likely than men to face obstacles such as cost barriers as a result of well-documented income disparities between genders. “Many mobility aids are designed for men rather than women, which we think may be a factor. “Using mobility aids can also make a disability visible, which can impact the safety and stigma experienced by women, in particular. “There’s a critical need for further research to identify and break down the barriers preventing women from accessing mobility aids that would improve their quality of life.” Professor Cathy Holloway, also from UCL, added: “Not having access to mobility aids when a person needs one can have a big impact on their independence, well-being and quality of life. “Our analysis suggests that women, in particular, regardless of other factors such as education and employment status, are not getting the support that they need.” Professor Shereen Hussein, senior author of the study and lead of the social care group at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, said: “The research provides compelling evidence of gender disparities in accessing assistive technology, suggesting that cost, design bias, and social stigma are likely to disproportionally affect women. “This underscores the need for inclusive, gender-sensitive approaches in the design, production and inclusivity of assistive technologies.”

Dominican judge Yacaira Veras postponed the hearing Thursday at the request of prosecutors because of the absence of several key witnesses in the case. Franco’s lawyers asked the court to reconsider the postponement, arguing Franco must report to spring training in mid-February. The judge replied that Franco is obligated to continue with the trial schedule and his conditional release from detainment. LeBron James ruled out of Lakers' game at Minnesota on Friday with foot soreness LOS ANGELES (AP) — LeBron James has been ruled out of the Los Angeles Lakers’ game at Minnesota on Friday night due to soreness in his left foot. James will miss his second straight game when the Lakers return from a four-day break to face the Timberwolves. The top scorer in NBA history was away from the team this week with an excused absence attributed to “personal reasons,” coach JJ Redick said Wednesday. It’s unclear whether James will even make the quick round trip to Minnesota before the Lakers’ next game at home against Memphis on Sunday. Rape investigation that Swedish media say focused on Kylian Mbappé has been closed STOCKHOLM (AP) — Swedish prosecutors say they have dropped a rape investigation that was launched in connection with soccer star Kylian Mbappé’s visit to Stockholm in October. In a statement, lead investigator Marina Chirakova says there is not enough evidence to continue the investigation into the allegation at a hotel. Prosecutors never publicly named the suspect in the investigation but some Swedish media reported it was Mbappé. The Real Madrid striker visited Stockholm in October during a break in the Spanish league. At the time, Mbappé’s legal team dismissed those reports as false. Indian teen Gukesh Dommaraju becomes the youngest chess world champion after beating Chinese rival NEW DELHI (AP) — Indian teenager Gukesh Dommaraju has become the youngest chess world champion after beating the defending champion Ding Liren of China. Dommaraju, 18, secured 7.5 points against 6.5 of his Chinese rival in Thursday's game which was played in Singapore. He has surpassed the achievement of Russia’s Garry Kasparov who won the title at the age of 22. Dommaraju is now also the second Indian to win the title after five-time world chess champion Viswanathan Anand. The Indian teen prodigy has long been considered a rising star in the chess world after he became a chess grandmaster at 12. He had entered the match as the youngest-ever challenger to the world crown after winning the Candidates tournament earlier this year. In the Conference League a youthful Chelsea lineup made the most of a long trip to Kazakhstan by beating Astana 3-1 to stay perfect in the third-tier competition.Hey Brandon, thanks for writing in and for the good question. Sean Payton clearly has Estime’s role on his mind. The first question he got during his Monday news conference was and he started talking about Estime. Then he laughed when he realized and gave great insight on Vele, too. But here’s what he said at one point Monday about Estime: “With Audric, I’ve got to continue to find his role because I feel like he can be that same type of impact player (as Vele) at a different position and we’re just not seeing it yet because of the opportunities.” Payton’s talked quite a bit about how he’s not typically used three running backs in the past. Sunday, in particular, he noted that the way the Raiders played defensively was not conducive to running the ball much. Against Atlanta, Williams ran hard and produced right from the start, so there was no reason to get away from that. It certainly seemed after the Kansas City game like Estime was going to take over the top spot, but instead, the rotation has continued. That’s not a great setup for fantasy football players, but I don’t see it as a bad thing for the Broncos. If Williams has it going, let him go. If he gets off to a slow start Monday night, see what the kid’s got. The Broncos have been healthy all year but having an extra player who you’re trying to get into the rotation is good insurance in case there’s an injury. Long-term, it’s pretty clear Estime is the leader in the clubhouse. He’s got the most upside and it would hardly be shocking if he got more work down the stretch. If you’re winning, though, you don’t have to force change just for the sake of change. It’ll be a really interesting situation to track over the coming weeks. Hey Mike, thanks for the question. What we know on Moss’ injury . It’s an MCL and it’s not serious, which is great news for Moss and the Broncos. Will he play Monday night? We’ll have a better feel for that late in the week, but Payton said there was some conversation about Moss going back into the game against the Raiders. Regardless of whether he misses any time or some time, I’d be surprised if the Broncos looked outside the building for an answer. They’ve been more than willing to have veteran Levi Wallace step in and play and they’ve got a pair of young players in third-year man Damarri Mathis and rookie Kris Abrams-Draine they could turn to as well if needed. It’s a place Denver has enviable depth and the guess here is they’d lean on that rather than dropping a new guy in at this stage of the season. The Broncos, in any event, will be very happy if they don’t have to consider any of those options and Moss is back either against Cleveland or on the other side of the bye week. Hey Yoann, thanks for writing and for the kind words. And I particularly appreciate this question. As I I kept considering going back further to 2023. Or maybe 2022. But then the 2021 class is obviously critical to this team’s success, too. So on and so forth. Eventually, I just stuck with the 2024 class in particular. The reality is every team is unique — the Broncos’ 2021 and 2024 classes clearly are going to be important to what they do long-term — but this is also just the way it has to be done in the NFL. You’ve got to build through the draft and you’ve got to find good players every year. Overall, I think you’re right that the Broncos have built a stronger, deeper roster than they got credit for before this season. Is it an elite roster from a talent and depth standpoint? Not at the moment, but they’ve got a better foundation in place than perhaps most realized. Perhaps that’s because it hasn’t been so much about finding superstars, but rather filling out a roster with less fanfare. They haven’t had much premium capital in recent years — due in large part to the franchise’s decision to trade it away for Russell Wilson and Sean Payton — but they’ve found quality players anyway. They haven’t hit on a Day 3 star like Detroit with WR Amon-Ra St. Brown in 2021, Seattle with Riq Woolen in 2022 or the Rams with both WR Pua Nacua and DL Kobie Turner in 2023. But in 2023 when they only had five draft picks, they found three undrafted free agents who are contributors this year in RB Jaleel McLaughlin, TE Nate Adkins and OT Alex Palczewski. The year before they got nickel Ja’Quan McMillian undrafted. There are still questions about the 2022 and 2023 classes as a whole. Bonitto is turning into the kind of player who helps make a draft class and Wattenberg’s a solid starter, but the rest of the group has had limited impact and now three players (TE Greg Dulcich, WR Montrell Washington and CB Faion Hicks) are gone. The 2023 class is too young to put a final grade on, but Denver needs more from Marvin Mims Jr. and Drew Sanders (as he gets healthy) as their top two picks in that class. Overall, though, Yoann, you’re right. Paton and the Broncos’ front office have done a nice job of finding solid players and doing so in multiple ways — the draft and college free agency, but also trading for John Franklin-Myers and Wil Lutz and putting together back-to-back high-quality free agent classes. Yeah good question, Scott. During the broadcast, CBS’ team noted that Nix is up into double-digit passes batted this year, which is among the most in the NFL. Nix, like many quarterbacks these days, does throw from a variety of arm slots and some are lower than others. He’ll do the shortstop-esque thing where he grabs the snap and slings it out to the perimeter. But I don’t know that those are the commonalities in the passes getting knocked down. All three Sunday against the Raiders were on near-horizontal throws. The Raiders’ rushers clearly emphasized getting hands up if it looked like Nix was going to throw short. And he’s thrown short a lot this season. It’s a good way to combat a quarterback who wants to get the ball out quickly. Nix’s 2.68 seconds average time to throw against Vegas, per Next Gen Stats, was his third-fastest of the season. Like a lot of things, this is probably just the learning curve of having a rookie QB. He’ll continue to learn the exact timing, where to put the football, how to throw around those defenders, etc. as he sees those types of looks more and more. In college there probably weren’t a lot of defenders getting to those positions and getting their hands up as quickly as happens in the pros. Ed’s asking the Run The Table question each week at this point, which is cool with me. Thanks for writing in, as always. You’re asking if I think the Broncos will end the regular season on a seven-game winning streak and with a 12-5 record, which I don’t. But that would be mighty impressive if it happened. My skepticism on this front is not so much about a rookie quarterback but more that it’s just really hard to do. And the Broncos have some tough ones left on the schedule, like trips to Los Angeles and Cincinnati and a Week 18 game against Kansas City that the Chiefs might need in their pursuit of the No. 1 seed. I do, though, think they can finish 3-2 and get to 10 wins on the year. There’s still a lot of football left to go deep into exact scenarios, but this much we know: Indianapolis and Cincinnati already have seven losses each. So if the Broncos get to 10 wins and get there by beating the Colts and Bengals, then the only other team currently behind them in the standings that can get to 10 wins is Miami, which is currently 5-6.
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Another NFL season is entering the home stretch with Week 13 of the 2024 season getting underway on Thanksgiving. Though the regular season may be approaching its end, Bills fans have something playoff-wise to potentially look forward to this week. Buffalo has the chance to earn one of the first playoff-clinching scenarios of the season during their game Sunday night against the San Francisco 49ers. If the Bills win on 'Sunday Night Football,' and the Miami Dolphins lose to the Green Bay Packers on Thanksgiving, Buffalo will clinch the AFC East for the fifth consecutive year in a row. This is the only clinching scenario for the Bills during Week 13. The only other team that can clinch a spot in the playoffs this week is their AFC rival Kansas City Chiefs, who also need a Miami loss on Thursday, along with a win on Black Friday vs. the Las Vegas Raiders. Another scenario that would clinch a playoff ticket for the Chiefs would be a win plus a Denver Broncos loss to the Cleveland Browns on Monday night. Kickoff between the Bills and 49ers is scheduled for 8:20 p.m. right here on WGRZ. Join us before the game as we will have a special edition of 'Sports Talk Live' beginning at 6:30 p.m. And don't forget, following the end of 'Sunday Night Football,' we will have postgame coverage on 'Channel 2 News Tonight,' right here on Channel 2. We've got some playoff-clinching scenarios to look out for in Week 13 👀 The @Chiefs can clinch a playoff berth with: - win on Black Friday vs. LV + MIA loss on Thanksgiving - OR with a win + DEN loss on MNF The @BuffaloBills can clinch the AFC East with: - win on Sunday vs. SF... pic.twitter.com/TZgRv0eQIAThanksgiving can be hectic. Feeding guests all week doesn’t have to be.COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State athletic director Ross Bjork said Thursday that he is "absolutely" confident that Ryan Day will be back as football coach in 2025. Calls to fire the sixth-year coach rose among Ohio State fans after the Buckeyes lost to Michigan for the fourth straight year. Bjork, in an interview on 97.1 The Fan, said Day is the man for the job, regardless of how the Buckeyes perform in the College Football Playoff. They host Tennessee in a first-round game Dec. 21. "Coach Day is awesome," said Bjork, who came from Texas A&M to replace the retiring Gene Smith last summer. "He's great to work with. He totally gets it. He loves being a Buckeye. So, we're going to support him at the highest level." The 13-10 loss to Michigan followed by an ugly melee between the teams put the coach in a precarious spot. He and his team were booed off the field by the home fans. Bjork ended up releasing a statement expressing his support for the coach. "The reason we had to say something after (the Michigan) game is, we're still breathing, we're still alive," Bjork said. "The season's not over. The book is not closed." Thanks to the playoff, Day has a chance to redeem himself with Ohio State's huge fanbase with a win against the Volunteers — and perhaps more in the 12-team tournament. Regardless of what happens, Day will be back next year, according to Bjork. "Coach Day and I just hit it off so well," Bjork said. "I've been really, really impressed. Every single time I talked to him, I learn something. He's innovative. He recruits at the highest level. He's got a great staff." Day wouldn't directly address his job status last weekend. "When you first come off those types of things, there's a lot of emotion," he said, referring to the Michigan loss. "And then as time goes on, you've got to get refocused because you know what you've done in the past does not affect what's going on moving forward. Everything is out in front of us." Failing to consistently beat Michigan is one of the few flaws in Day's coaching record. Hired as a member of coach Urban Meyer's staff in 2017, Day was the hand-picked successor when Meyer retired after the 2018 season. Compiling an overall 66-10 record, he is widely admired in the coaching community. "Great respect for what he's done in his coaching career, what he's done there at Ohio State and the success that they've had year-in and year-out," Tennessee coach Josh Heupel said. Day is in trouble now because losing The Game is considered an unforgiveable sin by Buckeyes fans. "What we have to do is this whole 'championship or bust' mentality, you want that as the goal, but it has to be about the process," Bjork said. "To me, we've got to maybe change some conversations a little bit. I think we need to maybe just approach things a little bit differently." Get local news delivered to your inbox!

And manager Ruben Amorin has no problem with it. “For me, it’s a very, very good sign,” Amorin said after his team beat Viktoria Plzen to stay unbeaten in the Europa League. Hojlund scored two goals and hoped for a centering pass from Diallo to go for a hat trick in the final minutes. The Denmark striker didn't get the pass, though. Viktoria had been pushing forward looking for an equalizer, which created space for United counters. On another break shortly afterward, Hojlund opted to keep the ball. The pair then had a heated post-game exchange. “We need to feel something,” Amorin said. “If we need to fight each other, it's like a family. When you don't care, you don't do nothing. When you care — you fight with your brother, with your mother, your father.” AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccer
