As expected, Mikaela Shiffrin will miss the second U.S. stop on the World Cup circuit. Shiffrin said Wednesday that she's "starting to feel a little bit more human" after suffering a puncture wound in her abdomen in a crash in a giant slalom race in Killington, Vermont . But whatever caused the puncture wound also dug "a cavern" in her oblique muscles, making it impossible for her to race at Beaver Creek, Colorado, next weekend. There's a downhill race Dec. 14 and a super-G the following day at Birds of Prey. "This is another fairly ambiguous injury and really hard to put a timeline of when I’ll be either back on snow or back to racing. But I do know that I will not be starting in Beaver Creek," Shiffrin said in a video posted to her social media accounts . "This is a really big bummer, not to be able to race Birds of Prey," the Colorado native said. "But on the other hand, I was really lucky and I’m really looking forward to cheering my teammates on racing Beaver Creek." Shiffrin was lucky to escape more serious injuries in the crash at Killington, her first chance at getting her 100th World Cup victory. She had a comfortable lead after the first run of the giant slalom Saturday, but less than 15 seconds from the finish line in the second run, Shiffrin lost an edge. She slammed into one gate and somersaulted into another before coming to a stop in the safety netting. She spent about 20 minutes on the hill before being taken down on a sled. Though the puncture wound and abdominal trauma appeared to be the worst of her injuries, Shiffrin said she did go to a hospital after she returned to Colorado on Tuesday to make sure her colon wasn't damaged. "There were some air bubbles where the puncture came pretty close to the colon. Last night's check confirmed that my colon is, indeed, intact. We would have seen symptoms sooner but it’s just good to have that confirmation," Shiffrin said. "As far as the muscle trauma goes, there’s a puncture and then basically whatever stabbed in there did a little dancey dance inside of my obliques and basically tore a cavern into my oblique muscles. That’s what’s causing bleeding and inflammation and just pain, in general." World Cup races this weekend in Canada were canceled because of snow conditions. EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — Los Angeles Chargers running back J.K Dobbins is unlikely to play against the Atlanta Falcons this week because of a knee injury. Dobbins was hurt in the first half of the Chargers’ 30-23 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Monday night. He had six carries for 40 yards and three catches for 19 yards before leaving the game. Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh declined to get into specifics of the injury Wednesday, other than confirming Dobbins is “working through something with his knee,” he said. Dobbins had been putting together a strong first season for the Chargers (7-4) after his past three years in Baltimore had been injury-riddled. He has 766 yards rushing and eight touchdowns through 11 games for Los Angeles, which had positioned Dobbins as a strong candidate for AP Comeback Player of the Year. Dobbins tore his Achilles tendon in the 2023 season opener for Baltimore. He also tore his ACL in 2021, and the effects of that injury lingered into the following season. NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Darren Rizzi would be an unconventional choice to take over the New Orleans Saints' head coaching job on a permanent basis. That doesn't mean it can't happen. The Saints (4-7) had been on a seven-game skid when Rizzi, the club's special teams coordinator, was promoted. They've since won two straight, and as the club entered its Week 12 bye, prominent players were already discussing their desire to continue improving Rizzi's resume. “He’s definitely had an impact on our football team,” quarterback Derek Carr said after New Orleans' 35-14 victory over Cleveland last weekend. “We want to keep winning so that maybe he gets a chance to be the coach here for a long time. “That’s what we want as players,” Carr continued. "Hopefully, we can continue to have success, keep winning and give him that opportunity.” Before the Saints' demoralizing defeat at Carolina precipitated the firing of third-year coach Dennis Allen , Rizzi had never been a head coach at the NFL or major college level. The north New Jersey native and former Rhode Island tight end got his first head coaching job at Division II New Haven in 1999. He also coached his alma mater in 2008 before moving to the NFL with Miami in 2009 as a special teams assistant. By 2010, he was the Dolphins' special teams coordinator and added the title of associate head coach in 2017 before ex-Saints coach Sean Payton lured him to New Orleans in 2019. A common thread shared by Payton and Rizzi is that both worked under Bill Parcells. Parcells — known best for winning two Super Bowls as coach of the New York Giants — was coaching the Dallas Cowboys when Payton was his offensive coordinator. Rizzi, who grew up a Giants fan during the Parcells era, got to know his childhood idol during his first couple years in Miami, where Parcells executive vice president of football operations. Since his promotion, Rizzi has spoken to both Payton and Parcells. And he has begun to employ motivational techniques reminiscent of Payton, who left New Orleans in 2022 as the franchise leader in wins (152 in the regular season and nine in the postseason — including New Orleans' lone Super Bowl triumph). Payton as a big believer of symbolic imagery and motivational props, from baseball bats distributed before contests that were expected to be especially physical to gas cans left in the lockers of aging veterans whose performance was key to the club's success. Rizzi, who describes himself as a “blue collar” guy, has his own spin on such things. He began his tenure by asking players to accept individual responsibility for the metaphorical hole the team had dug itself and asked them all to embrace the idea of filling it up — one shovelful at a time. He even has brought a shovel — as well as a hammer, tape measure, level and other construction tools — to team meetings to help make his points. Saints tight end Taysom Hill, who also plays on special teams, has gotten to know Rizzi well during a half-decade of working together. Hill doesn't sound surprised to see Rizzi's combination of work ethic, enthusiasm and personal touch resonating across the entire team now. He also made a lot of changes , from weekly schedule adjustments to reconfiguring players' lockers by position. “He has a really good pulse on what we need collectively as a team to get ready for a football game," said Hill, who scored three touchdowns and accounted for 248 yards as a runner, receiver, passer and returner against Cleveland. “Guys have responded to that.” Because Rizzi's first victory came over the first-place Atlanta Falcons , and because the Falcons lost again last week, the Saints now trail Atlanta by just two games with six to play. Suddenly, the idea of the Saints playing meaningful football down the stretch is not so far-fetched. “We’re starting to get our swag back, and that makes me happy,” Rizzi said. ”We’re going to have some downtime now to kind of press the reset button again and see if we can make a push here." WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump said he can't guarantee that his promised tariffs on key U.S. foreign trade partners won't raise prices for American consumers and he suggested once more that some political rivals and federal officials who pursued legal cases against him should be imprisoned. The president-elect, in a wide-ranging interview with NBC's “Meet the Press” that aired Sunday, also touched on monetary policy, immigration, abortion and health care, and U.S. involvement in Ukraine, Israel and elsewhere. Trump often mixed declarative statements with caveats, at one point cautioning “things do change.” A look at some of the issues covered: Trump has threatened broad trade penalties, but said he didn’t believe economists' predictions that added costs on those imported goods for American companies would lead to higher prices for U.S. consumers. He stopped short of a pledge that U.S. households won't be paying more as they shop. “I can’t guarantee anything. I can’t guarantee tomorrow,” Trump said, seeming to open the door to accepting the reality of how import levies typically work as goods reach the retail market. That's a different approach from Trump's typical speeches throughout the 2024 campaign, when he framed his election as a sure way to curb inflation. In the interview, Trump defended tariffs generally, saying they are "going to make us rich.” He has pledged that, on his first day in office in January, he would impose 25% tariffs on all goods imported from Mexico and Canada unless those countries satisfactorily stop illegal immigration and the flow of illegal drugs such as fentanyl into the United States. He also has threatened additional tariffs on China to help force that country to crack down on fentanyl production. ”All I want to do is I want to have a level, fast, but fair playing field,” Trump said. The president-elect underscored his contention that he can use the justice system against others, including special prosecutor Jack Smith, who led the case on Trump’s role in the siege on Jan. 6, 2021. Trump confirmed his plan to pardon supporters who were convicted for their roles in the riot, saying he would take that action on his first day in office. As for the idea of revenge driving potential prosecutions, Trump said: “I have the absolute right. I’m the chief law enforcement officer, you do know that. I’m the president. But I’m not interested in that." At the same time, Trump singled out lawmakers on a special House committee who had investigated the insurrection, citing Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., and former Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo. “Cheney was behind it ... so was Bennie Thompson and everybody on that committee,” Trump said. Asked specifically whether he would direct his administration to pursue cases, he said, “No,” and suggested he did not expect the FBI to quickly undertake investigations into his political enemies. But at another point, Trump said he would leave the matter up to Pam Bondi, his pick as attorney general. “I want her to do what she wants to do,” he said. Such threats, regardless of Trump's inconsistencies, have been taken seriously enough by many top Democrats that Biden is considering issuing blanket, preemptive pardons to protect key members of his outgoing administration. Trump did seemingly back off his campaign rhetoric calling for Biden to be investigated, saying, “I’m not looking to go back into the past.” Trump repeatedly mentioned his promises to seal the U.S.-Mexico border and deport millions of people who are in the U.S. illegally through a mass deportation program. “I think you have to do it,” he said. He suggested he would try to use executive action to end “birthright” citizenship under which people born in the U.S. are considered citizens — although such protections are spelled out in the Constitution. Asked specifically about the future for people who were brought into the country illegally as children and have been shielded from deportation in recent years, Trump said, “I want to work something out,” indicating he might seek a solution with Congress. But Trump also said he does not “want to be breaking up families” of mixed legal status, “so the only way you don’t break up the family is you keep them together and you have to send them all back.” Long a critic of NATO members for not spending more on their own defense, Trump said he “absolutely” would remain in the alliance “if they pay their bills.” Pressed on whether he would withdraw if he were dissatisfied with allies’ commitments, Trump said he wants the U.S. treated “fairly” on trade and defense. She'd sent a devastating email to him during his divorce in 2018 accusing him of routinely abusing women and lacking any decency and character. Quite the damning criticism from one's own mother. Which is fair enough. Though the problem is that she has not been able to produce the second email. So the media is unable to publish it. Nobody is taking her change of heart seriously. The skids are clearly under Hegseth. Republican senators who had previously dismissed the accusations against him as 'side issues' have gone quiet. Lindsay Graham, Republican Senator for South Carolina, acolyte of The Donald and a reliable lagging indicator of the way the wind is blowing, now says the claims against Hegseth are 'very disturbing', that confirmation is going to be 'very difficult', that leadership of the Pentagon requires 'good order and discipline' (sorry, Pete) and, just to twist the knife, 'every young woman who joins the military needs to feel respected and welcomed' (really sorry, Pete). For whom the bell tolls? It tolls for thee, Pete. First out was Matt Gaetz, Trump's original choice for Attorney General, a post also known in Trump World as Revenger-in-Chief. The moment his nomination was announced, previous but still seriously damaging accusations of sex trafficking and sexual relationships with minors soon resurfaced. Trump quickly nominated instead Pam Bondi, a former Florida attorney general who served as one of Trump's defense lawyers during his first impeachment in 2020. The switch for Trump was like water off a duck's back. Bondi had been the choice of Susie Wiles, who will be Trump's White House chief of staff, all along. If three demur from backing Hegseth he could still clinch the nomination because, as vice president, JD Vance will also be President of the Senate with a casting vote in the event of a tie. But with four Republican dissenters, Hegseth would be finished. I know of at least five likely to vote against him — and the number is growing. The revolving door is already doing overtime. As all eyes were on the Hegseth circus, Trump's candidate for the Drug Enforcement Agency, Chad Chronister, Sheriff of Hillsborough County Florida, barely lasted 24 hours before the President-elect pulled him on Tuesday for something he said which Trump found disobliging. Nor did Trump's choice for White House counsel, William McGinley, get the chance to start his job. Picked by Trump only a few weeks ago, he was replaced this week by David Warrington, the Trump campaign's top lawyer. There is more fun and games to come — and with bigger fish. The confirmation of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as Health Secretary is anything but a slam dunk. He has backed enough kooky conspiracy theories in his time, advocated multiple bizarre approaches to health and harbored several sex-related skeletons of his own to prove a dripping roast for the Senate confirmation process. Then there's Tulsi Gabbard, Trump's choice to be Director of National Intelligence, a controversial pick for such a post given her penchant for repeating Kremlin talking points and her cozying up to Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad. All that will provide the Senate with another field day. To be fair, many of Trump's choices for his second administration are respectable and uncontroversial, including the prime posts of Treasury (Scott Bessent, an experienced financier) and State (Marco Rubio, who specialized in foreign affairs as a senator). It's the more explosive ones that generate the headlines — and even then, there could be method to Trump's apparent madness. It is all very much part of his long-standing modus operandi. Set ally against ally to see who emerges on top. It's fun to watch. Throw stuff at the wall and see what sticks. If it sticks, proceed. If some of it slides off, get rid of it quickly and move on with something more reliably sticky. It's usually a win-win for Trump. The confirmation of Robert F. The Trump base is content. Their man is doing his best. Trump is content. He still gets a few outsiders and usurpers to stir things up but will rely largely on more mainstream figures to govern the country. Of course, the road will be rockier than that. Trump 2.0 will not be for those of a nervous disposition. He will quickly fallout with many of his more cautious appointees. Some will resign, others quit to write their tales about how terrible he is (something of a cottage industry in his first administration). Some usurpers will likely prove more trouble than they're worth. Trump will be forced to part company with them. So that revolving door will need to be kept well oiled. For it will be in constant use these next four chaotic but fascinating years. Discussions have continued giving rise to last-minute amendments and other negotiations have reached an impasse. Senator Gallagher has said the government will go to other members of the Senate to get its legislation across the line. That has become more difficult as the Senate suspended independent senator Lidia Thorpe on Wednesday night after she threw pieces of paper at Pauline Hanson over a racism row. This means Senator Thorpe has been barred from the chamber and will be unable to vote on any legislation. Members of the Senate have also raised concerns that the compressed timeline will not allow bills to be properly considered, with Nationals senator Matt Canavan arguing that each piece of legislation would only receive 15 minutes of debate assuming the chamber sat for its usual nine-hour day. "What other workplace gets to knock off in November and not back until February?" he wrote on X. A federal election must be held by May 17, but if the government opts for an earlier contest, politicians may not return to Parliament House before Australians go to the polls.
