President-elect Donald Trump was welcomed back to the world stage on Saturday, sitting down with Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy and French President Emmanuel Macron with a dramatic backdrop: the reopening of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame. With Trump set to return to the White House in January, the three leaders met at the Elysee Palace in Paris with diplomacy on the war in Ukraine in flux. Officials close to Macron and Zelenskyy said the meeting was positive, without providing details. “The world is going a little crazy right now and we’ll be talking about that,” Trump told reporters as he arrived for an initial two-way meeting with Macron. Macron had sought to engineer the talks to initiate a discussion on how to end the war in Ukraine, an official in his office said. Later, the French president hosted guests, including heads of state and global business leaders, at the cathedral that was painstakingly restored after a catastrophic 2019 fire. For Macron, the day’s events offered a brief fillip as he seeks a new prime minister after his government collapsed this week in a show of force by far-right leader Marine Le Pen. Almost three years after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Zelenskyy and his allies are anxiously watching Trump for signs of how he plans approach the conflict. U.S. weapons and financial aid have been a vital crutch for Kyiv, but Trump had promised he would engineer a swift end to the war on the campaign trail. That’s fueled concerns in Kyiv and other European capitals that the next U.S. administration might roll back support for Ukraine to pressure Zelenskyy to compromise. On the battlefield, Ukrainian forces have been on the back foot for most of the year and Russian gains have been accelerating in recent weeks. The incoming U.S. president faces a daunting range of geopolitical challenges, including war in the Middle East and long-running tensions with China. Shortly before arriving at the presidential palace, Trump posted on his Truth Social platform about the conflict in Syria, where rebels opposed to President Bashar Assad have made rapid advances. A withdrawal of its troops that are helping support Assad might be “the best thing that can happen” to Russia, he said. The U.S., he added, “should have nothing to do with it. This is not our fight.” The visit to Paris is Trump’s first trip abroad to meet with world leaders since he won back the White House in November and is a coup for Macron, who’s seen his political program decimated by the domestic opposition who forced out his prime minister with a no-confidence vote on Wednesday. Macron worked hard to engage Trump through his first term, despite Trump’s occasional barbs, inviting the U.S. leader to the Bastille Day ceremony in 2017 and taking him to dinner at the Eiffel Tower. Trump called Macron weak after the “Yellow Vest” protests broke out in 2018 and attacked him for cozying up to China. On Saturday, Macron deployed all his experience of dealing with Trump, welcoming him with a red-carpet ceremony at the Elysee and making him effectively the guest of honor at the cathedral. Trump was seated in the front row next to Macron and the two men were seen chatting during the service. Regardless of Macron’s domestic struggles, the meeting was testament to the unique soft power of France and the president’s ability to wield it. As Trump and Zelenskiy were speaking, an exclusive list of guests were arriving at the cathedral, which has been rebuilt at a cost of 700 million euros ($740 million). Bernard Arnault, Europe’s richest man, was among the early arrivals. Kering SA Chief Executive Officer Francois-Henri Pinault came with his wife, the actor Salma Hayek. Both men were major donors to the reconstruction effort. Billionaire John Elkann, who chairs automaker Stellantis SA, was also in attendance as was FIFA President Gianni Infantino. Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni chuckled as she posed for the cameras with Macron and his wife Brigitte. Zelenskyy embraced Macron as he arrived and appeared to say “thank you” to the French leader. The Ukrainian was given an ovation by the guests as he entered the nave. Trump was among the last of the grandees to be greeted by Macron outside the cathedral, though Elon Musk, a close ally of the president-elect, arrived shortly afterward, scurrying across the square in the rain. First lady Jill Biden followed soon before the ceremony started. After the ceremony at the cathedral, a select group of guests will attend a dinner back at Macron’s presidential palace. ©2024 Bloomberg L.P. Visit bloomberg.com. Celtics vs. Grizzlies Injury Report Today – December 7Iowa cornerback Jermari Harris has opted out of the remainder of the 2024 season in order to prepare for the NFL draft, according to a report by 247Sports.com . The 6-foot-1 sixth-year senior from Chicago has recorded 27 tackles, three interceptions and a team-high seven pass breakups in 10 games for the Hawkeyes this season. That includes a pick-6 in a 38-21 win over Troy earlier this season. Iowa (6-4, 4-3 Big Ten) plays at Maryland on Saturday before closing out its regular season at home against Nebraska on Nov. 29. The Hawkeyes are already bowl eligible, so Harris is likely opting out of three games in total. After missing the entire 2022 season due to an ankle injury, Harris was suspended for two games of the following season for his involvement in the gambling investigation into Iowa athletics. He later emerged as the Hawkeyes' top cornerback, earning the team's comeback player of the year award after compiling 42 tackles, one interception and eight pass breakups. Harris will finish his college career with 105 tackles and eight interceptions. --Field Level Media

Photo : REUTERS/Maxim Shemetov T he European Union, the US and other wealthy countries raised their offer of climate funding for developing nations to $300 billion a year at COP29 on Saturday, in a bid to unlock increasingly tense negotiations already a day into overtime, reports Reuters. The UN climate summit had been due to finish on Friday but ran into extra hours as negotiators from nearly 200 countries - who must adopt the deal by consensus - tried to reach agreement on a funding plan for the next decade. It was not clear if the revised offer would be enough to lead to a deal, but negotiators from developing countries and island nations on Saturday aired frustration over a process they said was not inclusive, and temporarily walked out of talks. A $250 billion proposal, drafted by Azerbaijan’s COP29 presidency on Friday, was dismissed as woefully insufficient by developing countries, reeling from the soaring costs of storms, floods and droughts fuelled by climate change. COP29 has laid bare divisions between wealthy governments constrained by tight domestic budgets and developing nations, while past failures to meet climate finance obligations have also made developing countries mistrustful of new promises. The new goal is intended to replace developed countries’ previous commitment to provide $100 billion in climate finance for poorer nations per year by 2020. That goal was met two years late, in 2022, and expires in 2025. Five sources with knowledge of the closed-door discussions said the EU had agreed it could accept the higher number of $300 billion a year. Two of the sources said the United States, Australia and Britain were also on board. A European Commission spokesperson and an Australian government spokesperson both declined to comment on the negotiations. The U.S. delegation at COP29 and the UK energy ministry did not immediately respond to requests for comment. With no formal update yet of the deal draft from the COP29 presidency, the mood was tense among negotiating groups. “There is no clarity on the way forward. There is no clarity on the political will that we need to get out of this,” said Panama’s lead negotiator, Juan Carlos Monterrey Gomez. Representatives from the least developed countries and small island nations blocs walked out of a negotiating room in frustration, but said they remained committed to finding a deal. “We have temporarily walked out but remain interested in the talks until we get a fair deal,” said LDC bloc chair Evans Njewa in a post on X. The Alliance of Small Island States issued a statement confirming it had also walked away from the negotiation temporarily. “We want nothing more than to continue to engage, but the process must be inclusive,” it said. US climate envoy John Podesta said he expected talks to progress toward a deal. “Hopefully this is the storm before the calm,” he said. PUSHING FOR $390 BILLION Marina Silva, Brazil’s minister of the environment and climate change, had said on Friday that the Amazon rainforest nation - which is set to host next year’s summit - was pushing for $390 billion annually from developed countries by 2035. “We cannot leave Baku without a decision that lives up to the challenge we are facing,” she said via a translator. Negotiators have worked throughout the two-week summit to address other critical questions on the finance target, including who is asked to contribute and how much of the funding is on a grant basis, rather than provided as loans. The roster of countries required to contribute - about two dozen industrialised countries, including the US, European nations and Canada - dates back to a list decided during UN climate talks in 1992. European governments have demanded others join them in paying in, including China, the world’s second-biggest economy, and oil-rich Gulf states. Donald Trump’s US presidential election victory this month cast a cloud over the Baku talks. Trump, who takes office in January, has promised to again remove the US from international climate cooperation, so negotiators from other wealthy nations expect that under his administration the world’s largest economy will not pay into the climate finance goal. A broader goal of raising $1.3 trillion in climate finance annually by 2035 - which would include funding from all public and private sources and which economists say matches the sum needed - was included in the draft deal published on Friday. Poorer countries have warned that a weak finance deal at COP29 would undercut their ability to set more ambitious targets to cut the greenhouse gas emissions causing climate change. END/SZA

By MIKE CATALINI CHATHAM, N.J. (AP) — That buzzing coming out of New Jersey? It’s unclear if it’s drones or something else, but for sure the nighttime sightings are producing tons of talk, a raft of conspiracy theories and craned necks looking skyward. Related Articles National News | Today in History: December 16, the Boston Tea Party National News | Today in History: December 15, Dylann Roof convicted of killing 9 Black church members in South Carolina National News | Paying homage to veterans on Wreaths Across America Day National News | Today in History: December 14, the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting National News | Court denies TikTok’s request to halt enforcement of potential US ban until Supreme Court review Cropping up on local news and social media sites around Thanksgiving, the saga of the drones reported over New Jersey has reached incredible heights. This week seems to have begun a new, higher-profile chapter: Lawmakers are demanding (but so far not getting) explanations from federal and state authorities about what’s behind them. Gov. Phil Murphy wrote to President Joe Biden asking for answers. New Jersey’s new senator, Andy Kim, spent Thursday night on a drone hunt in rural northern New Jersey, and posted about it on X. But perhaps the most fantastic development is the dizzying proliferation of conspiracies — none of which has been confirmed or suggested by federal and state officials who say they’re looking into what’s happening. It has become shorthand to refer to the flying machines as drones, but there are questions about whether what people are seeing are unmanned aircraft or something else. Some theorize the drones came from an Iranian mothership. Others think they are the Secret Service making sure President-elect Donald Trump’s Bedminster property is secure. Others worry about China. The deep state. And on. In the face of uncertainty, people have done what they do in 2024: Create a social media group. The Facebook page, New Jersey Mystery Drones — let’s solve it , has nearly 44,000 members, up from 39,000 late Thursday. People are posting their photo and video sightings, and the online commenters take it from there. One video shows a whitish light flying in a darkened sky, and one commenter concludes it’s otherworldly. “Straight up orbs,” the person says. Others weigh in to say it’s a plane or maybe a satellite. Another group called for hunting the drones literally, shooting them down like turkeys. (Do not shoot at anything in the sky, experts warn.) Trisha Bushey, 48, of Lebanon Township, New Jersey, lives near Round Valley Reservoir where there have been numerous sightings. She said she first posted photos online last month wondering what the objects were and became convinced they were drones when she saw how they moved and when her son showed her on a flight tracking site that no planes were around. Now she’s glued to the Mystery Drones page, she said. “I find myself — instead of Christmas shopping or cleaning my house — checking it,” she said. She doesn’t buy what the governor said, that the drones aren’t a risk to public safety. Murphy told Biden on Friday that residents need answers. The federal Homeland Security Department and FBI also said in a joint statement they have no evidence that the sightings pose “a national security or public safety threat or have a foreign nexus.” “How can you say it’s not posing a threat if you don’t know what it is?” she said. “I think that’s why so many people are uneasy.” Then there’s the notion that people could misunderstand what they’re seeing. William Austin is the president of Warren County Community College, which has a drone technology degree program, and is coincidentally located in one of the sighting hotspots. Austin says he has looked at videos of purported drones and that airplanes are being misidentified as drones. He cited an optical effect called parallax, which is the apparent shift of an object when viewed from different perspectives. Austin encouraged people to download flight and drone tracker apps so they can better understand what they’re looking at. Nonetheless, people continue to come up with their own theories. “It represents the United States of America in 2024,” Austin said. “We’ve lost trust in our institutions, and we need it.” Federal officials echo Austin’s view that many of the sightings are piloted aircraft such as planes and helicopters being mistaken for drones, according to lawmakers and Murphy. That’s not really convincing for many, though, who are homing in on the sightings beyond just New Jersey and the East Coast, where others have reported seeing the objects. For Seph Divine, 34, another member of the drone hunting group who lives in Eugene, Oregon, it feels as if it’s up to citizen sleuths to solve the mystery. He said he tries to be a voice of reason, encouraging people to fact check their information, while also asking probing questions. “My main goal is I don’t want people to be caught up in the hysteria and I also want people to not just ignore it at the same time,” he said. “Whether or not it’s foreign military or some secret access program or something otherworldly, whatever it is, all I’m saying is it’s alarming that this is happening so suddenly and so consistently for hours at a time,” he added. Associated Press reporter Hallie Golden in Seattle contributed to this report.

NEW YORK (AP) — The huge rally for U.S. stocks lost momentum on Thursday as Wall Street counted down to a big jobs report that’s coming on Friday. The crypto market had more action, and bitcoin briefly burst to a record above $103,000 before pulling back. The S&P 500 slipped 0.2% from the all-time high it had set the day before, its 56th of the year so far, to shave a bit off what’s set to be one of its best years of the millennium . The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 248 points, or 0.6%, while the Nasdaq composite slipped 0.2% from its own record set the day before. Bitcoin powered above $100,000 for the first time the night before, after President-elect Donald Trump chose Paul Atkins, who's seen as a crypto advocate, as his nominee to head the Securities and Exchange Commission. The cryptocurrency has climbed dramatically from less than $70,000 on Election Day, but it fell back as Thursday progressed toward $99,000, according to CoinDesk. Sharp swings for bitcoin are nothing new, and they took stocks of companies enmeshed in the crypto world on a similar ride. After rising as much as 9% in early trading, MicroStrategy, a company that’s been raising cash just to buy bitcoin, swung to a loss of 4.8%. Crypto exchange Coinbase Global fell 3.1% after likewise erasing a big early gain. Elsewhere on Wall Street, stocks of airlines helped lead the way following the latest bumps up to financial forecasts from carriers. American Airlines Group soared 16.8% after saying it’s making more in revenue during the last three months of 2024 than it expected, and it will likely make a bigger profit than it had earlier forecast. The airline also chose Citi to be its exclusive partner for credit cards that give miles in its loyalty program. That should help its cash coming in from co-branded credit card and other partners grow by about 10% annually. Southwest Airlines climbed 2% after saying it’s seeing stronger demand from leisure travelers than it expected. It also raised its forecast for revenue for the holiday traveling season. On the losing end of Wall Street was Synposys, which tumbled 12.4%. The supplier for the semiconductor industry reported better profit for the latest quarter than analysts expected, but it also warned of “continued macro uncertainties” and gave a forecast for revenue in the current quarter that fell short of some analysts’ estimates. American Eagle Outfitters fell even more, 14.3%, after the retailer said it’s preparing for “potential choppiness” outside of peak selling periods. It was reminiscent of a warning from Foot Locker earlier in the week and raised more concerns about how resilient U.S. shoppers can remain. Solid spending by U.S. consumers has been one of the main reasons the U.S. economy has avoided a recession that earlier seemed inevitable after the Federal Reserve hiked interest rates to crush inflation. But shoppers are now contending with still-high prices and a slowing job market . This week’s highlight for Wall Street will be Friday’s jobs report from the U.S. government, which will show how many people employers hired and fired last month. A report on Thursday said the number of U.S. workers applying for unemployment benefits rose last week but remains at historically healthy levels. Expectations are high that the Fed will cut its main interest rate again when it meets in two weeks. The Fed began easing its main interest rate from a two-decade high in September, hoping to offer more support for the job market. In the bond market, the yield on the 10-year Treasury edged down to 4.17% from 4.18% late Wednesday. The S&P 500 fell 11.38 points to 6,075.11. The Dow sank 248.33 to 44,765.71, and the Nasdaq composite lost 34.86 to 19,700.26. In stock markets abroad, indexes were mostly calm in Europe after far-right and left-wing lawmakers in France joined together to vote on a no-confidence motion that will force Prime Minister Michel Barnier and his Cabinet to resign. The CAC 40 index in Paris added 0.4%. In South Korea, the Kospi fell 0.9% to compound its 1.4% decline from the day before. President Yoon Suk Yeol was facing possible impeachment after he suddenly declared martial law on Tuesday night. He revoked the martial law declaration six hours later. Crude oil prices slipped after eight members of the OPEC+ alliance of oil exporting countries decided to put off increasing oil production. Simple Hacks to Make the Holidays Merrier (and Cheaper)

New Jersey governor wants more federal resources for probe into drone sightingsDec 13 (Reuters) - Bangladesh's veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been suspended from bowling in all competitions organised by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) for exceeding the maximum permitted elbow extension of 15 degrees. The 37-year-old's action was scrutinized by on-field umpires in his one-off appearance for Surrey in September - his first appearance in the County Championship since the 2010-11 season. Following umpires' suspicions, he was asked to do a test. "Shakib completed an independent assessment at Loughborough University earlier this month, which found that the elbow extension in his bowling action exceeded the 15-degree threshold as defined in the Regulations," the ECB said in a statement. "This suspension takes effect from the receipt of the independent assessment on Dec. 10, and follows the process set out in the ECB's Regulations for the Review of Bowlers Reported with a Suspected Illegal Bowling Action." Shakib, who is considered the greatest cricketer Bangladesh has produced, could not be immediately reached for comment. To overturn the ban, the left arm spinner will need to undergo a reassessment demonstrating a narrower elbow extension. Shakib, who has been surrounded by controversy of late due to political unrest in Bangladesh, retired from Twenty20 internationals in September and decided to not return home for a farewell test against South Africa in Mirpur in October. But the former captain will likely feature in next year's Champions Trophy. Shakib was a member of parliament for the Awami League led by Sheikh Hasina, whose 15-year rule as prime minister ended in August with her fleeing to India following deadly protests. In 2019, he received a two-year ban from playing after the International Cricket Council (ICC) found he had breached its anti-corruption code. Sign up here. Reporting by Suramya Kaushik in Bengaluru; Editing by Andrew Cawthorne Our Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles. , opens new tabNEW YORK (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump’s lawyers urged a judge again Friday to throw out his hush money conviction, balking at the prosecution’s suggestion of preserving the verdict by treating the case the way some courts do when a defendant dies. They called the idea “absurd.” The Manhattan district attorney's office is asking Judge Juan M. Merchan to “pretend as if one of the assassination attempts against President Trump had been successful,” Trump’s lawyers wrote in a blistering 23-page response. In court papers made public Tuesday, District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office proposed an array of options for keeping the historic conviction on the books after Trump’s lawyers filed paperwork earlier this month asking for the case to be dismissed. They include freezing the case until Trump leaves office in 2029, agreeing that any future sentence won't include jail time, or closing the case by noting he was convicted but that he wasn't sentenced and his appeal wasn’t resolved because of presidential immunity. Trump lawyers Todd Blanche and Emil Bove reiterated Friday their position that the only acceptable option is overturning his conviction and dismissing his indictment, writing that anything less will interfere with the transition process and his ability to lead the country. The Manhattan district attorney’s office declined comment. It’s unclear how soon Merchan will decide. He could grant Trump’s request for dismissal, go with one of the prosecution’s suggestions, wait until a federal appeals court rules on Trump’s parallel effort to get the case moved out of state court, or choose some other option. In their response Friday, Blanche and Bove ripped each of the prosecution’s suggestions. Halting the case until Trump leaves office would force the incoming president to govern while facing the “ongoing threat” that he’ll be sentenced to imprisonment, fines or other punishment as soon as his term ends, Blanche and Bove wrote. Trump, a Republican, takes office Jan. 20. “To be clear, President Trump will never deviate from the public interest in response to these thuggish tactics,” the defense lawyers wrote. “However, the threat itself is unconstitutional.” The prosecution’s suggestion that Merchan could mitigate those concerns by promising not to sentence Trump to jail time on presidential immunity grounds is also a non-starter, Blanche and Bove wrote. The immunity statute requires dropping the case, not merely limiting sentencing options, they argued. Blanche and Bove, both of whom Trump has tabbed for high-ranking Justice Department positions, expressed outrage at the prosecution’s novel suggestion that Merchan borrow from Alabama and other states and treat the case as if Trump had died. Blanche and Bove accused prosecutors of ignoring New York precedent and attempting to “fabricate” a solution “based on an extremely troubling and irresponsible analogy between President Trump" who survived assassination attempts in Pennsylvania in July and Florida in September “and a hypothetical dead defendant.” Such an option normally comes into play when a defendant dies after being convicted but before appeals are exhausted. It is unclear whether it is viable under New York law, but prosecutors suggested that Merchan could innovate in what’s already a unique case. “This remedy would prevent defendant from being burdened during his presidency by an ongoing criminal proceeding,” prosecutors wrote in their filing this week. But at the same time, it wouldn’t “precipitously discard” the “meaningful fact that defendant was indicted and found guilty by a jury of his peers.” Prosecutors acknowledged that “presidential immunity requires accommodation” during Trump’s impending return to the White House but argued that his election to a second term should not upend the jury’s verdict, which came when he was out of office. Longstanding Justice Department policy says sitting presidents cannot face criminal prosecution . Other world leaders don’t enjoy the same protection. For example, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is on trial on corruption charges even as he leads that nation’s wars in Lebanon and Gaza . Trump has been fighting for months to reverse his May 30 conviction on 34 counts of falsifying business records . Prosecutors said he fudged the documents to conceal a $130,000 payment to porn actor Stormy Daniels to suppress her claim that they had sex a decade earlier, which Trump denies. In their filing Friday, Trump’s lawyers citing a social media post in which Sen. John Fetterman used profane language to criticize Trump’s hush money prosecution. The Pennsylvania Democrat suggested that Trump deserved a pardon, comparing his case to that of President Joe Biden’s pardoned son Hunter Biden, who had been convicted of tax and gun charges . “Weaponizing the judiciary for blatant, partisan gain diminishes the collective faith in our institutions and sows further division,” Fetterman wrote Wednesday on Truth Social. Trump’s hush money conviction was in state court, meaning a presidential pardon — issued by Biden or himself when he takes office — would not apply to the case. Presidential pardons only apply to federal crimes. Since the election, special counsel Jack Smith has ended his two federal cases , which pertained to Trump’s efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss and allegations that he hoarded classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate. A separate state election interference case in Fulton County, Georgia, is largely on hold. Trump denies wrongdoing in all. Trump had been scheduled for sentencing in the hush money case in late November. But following Trump’s Nov. 5 election victory, Merchan halted proceedings and indefinitely postponed the former and future president’s sentencing so the defense and prosecution could weigh in on the future of the case. Merchan also delayed a decision on Trump’s prior bid to dismiss the case on immunity grounds. A dismissal would erase Trump’s conviction, sparing him the cloud of a criminal record and possible prison sentence. Trump is the first former president to be convicted of a crime and the first convicted criminal to be elected to the office.Late drama as Atalanta go top of Serie A table

Travis Hunter and Ashton Jeanty give this year’s Heisman Trophy ceremony a different vibeGisèle Benoit still gets goosebumps when she remembers the first time she saw a family of eastern wolves emerge from the forests of the Mauricie National Park, under the backdrop of a rising moon. It was 1984 and Benoit, then in her early 20s, had been using a horn to try to call a bull moose when she instead heard a long howl, followed by an adult wolf stepping out to a rocky shore accompanied by a half-grown youth and four pups. “I will never forget that,” she said of the magical moment. “It’s anchored in my heart forever.” It was only later that Benoit, an artist and documentary filmmaker, learned that the wolves she saw weren’t grey wolves but rather rare eastern wolves. The species, whose population is estimated at fewer than 1,000 mature adults, could soon be further protected by new measures that are raising hopes among conservationists that attitudes toward a once-feared and maligned animal are shifting. In July, the federal government upgraded the eastern wolf’s threat level from “status of special concern” to “threatened,” based on a 2015 report by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada. That report found the population count may be as low as 236 mature individuals in its central Ontario and southern Quebec habitat. The eastern wolf is described as medium-sized canid with reddish-tawny fur that lives in family groups of a breeding pair and their offspring. Also known as the Algonquin wolf, it is largely restricted to existing protected areas, including Algonquin Park in Ontario. The federal Environment Department said in an email that development of a recovery strategy is underway, adding it would be “written in collaboration with provincial governments, federal departments responsible for the federal lands where the eastern wolf is found as well as First Nations groups and Indigenous organizations.” The order triggers protection for the species on federal lands and forces Ottawa to prepare a recovery plan. However, the fight for protection could be an uphill battle in Quebec, which does not even recognize the eastern wolf as a distinct species. A spokesperson for Quebec’s Environment Department said Quebec considers the eastern wolf a “genetic group” rather than its own species. “Recent study shows that the eastern wolf is a distinct entity, even if it comes from several crosses between the grey wolf and the coyote,” Daniel Labonté wrote in an email. “However, scientific knowledge does not demonstrate that this genetic grouping constitutes a species in its own right.” Labonté added that this lack of recognition was not a barrier to protecting the animal, since the law also allows for protection of subspecies or wildlife populations. In October, Quebec launched a program to collect samples to improve knowledge on the distribution of large canines, including the eastern wolf. The government said it is currently “impossible to assert that there is an established population” in Quebec due to low numbers — amounting to three per cent of analyzed samples — and the “strong hybridization that exists among large canids.” Véronique Armstrong, co-founder of a Quebec wildlife protection association, says she’s feeling positive about both the Canadian and Quebec governments’ attitudes. While wolves were once “stigmatized, even persecuted,” she said, “we seem to be heading in the direction of more protection.” Her group, the Association québécoise pour la protection et l’observation de la faune, has submitted a proposal for a conservation area to protect southern Quebec wolves that has already received signs of support from three of the regional municipalities that would be covered, she said. While it’s far from settled, she’s hopeful that the battle to protect wolves might be easier than for some other species, such as caribou, because the wolves are adaptable and can tolerate some human activity, including forestry. John Theberge, a retired professor of ecology and conservation biology from the University of Waterloo and a wolf researcher, spent several years along with his wife studying and radio-collaring eastern wolves around Algonquin Park. Back in the 1990s and 2000s, they faced a “huge political battle” to try to expand wolf protection outside park boundaries after realizing that the far-ranging animals were being hunted and trapped in large numbers once they left the protected lands. Conservationists, he said, faced resistance from powerful hunter and trapper lobbies opposed to protecting the animals but in the end succeeded in permanently closing the zones outside the park to hunting and trapping in 2004. Theberge says people who want to save wolves today still face some of that same opposition — especially when governments including Quebec, Alberta and British Columbia kill wolves to protect endangered caribou. But he believes the public support for protecting wolves has increased from when his career began in the 1960s, when they were treated with fear and suspicion. “Nobody wore T-shirts with wolves on them back then,” he said. Over the years, there have been questions about whether the eastern wolf may be a grey wolf subspecies or a coyote-wolf hybrid. But in the order protecting the wolves, the federal government says genetic analyses have resolved that debate, showing that it is a “distinct species.” Benoit, Theberge and Armstrong all believe that while it’s important to protect the eastern wolf from a genetic diversity perspective, there is value in protecting all wolves, regardless of their DNA. Wolves, they say, are an umbrella species, meaning that protecting them helps protect a variety of other species. They kill off weak and sick animals, ensuring strong populations. They’re also “highly developed, sentient social species, with a division of labour, and strong family alliances,” Theberge said. Benoit agrees. After years spent watching wolves, she has developed great respect for how they live in close-knit families, with older offspring helping raise new pups. “It’s extraordinary to see how their way of life is a little like humans’,” she said.

Morgan Rogers looked to have given Unai Emery’s side another famous win when he slammed a loose ball home at the death, but referee Jesus Gil Manzano ruled Diego Carlos to have fouled Juve goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio and the goal was chalked off. It was a disappointment for Villa, who remain unbeaten at home in their debut Champions League campaign and are still in contention to qualify automatically for the last 16. A very controversial finish at Villa Park 😲 Morgan Rogers' late goal is ruled out for a foul on Juventus goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio and the match ends 0-0 ❌ 📺 @tntsports & @discoveryplusUK pic.twitter.com/MyYL5Vdy3r — Football on TNT Sports (@footballontnt) November 27, 2024 Emiliano Martinez had earlier displayed why he was named the best goalkeeper in the world as his wonder save kept his side level in the second half. The Argentina international paraded his two Yashin Trophies on the pitch before kick-off at Villa Park and then showed why he won back-to-back FIFA awards when he denied Francisco Conceicao. Before Rogers’ moment of drama in the fourth minute of added time, the closest Villa came to scoring was in the first half when Lucas Digne’s free-kick hit the crossbar. But a draw was a fair result which leaves Villa out of the top eight on goal difference and Juventus down in 19th. Before the game Emery called Juventus one of the “best teams in the world, historically and now”, but this was an Italian side down to the bare bones. Only 14 outfield players made the trip from Turin, with striker Dusan Vlahovic among those who stayed behind. The opening 30 minutes were forgettable before the game opened up. Ollie Watkins, still chasing his first Champions League goal, had Villa’s first presentable chance as he lashed an effort straight at Di Gregorio. Matty Cash then had a vicious effort from the resulting corner which was blocked by Federico Gatti and started a counter-attack which ended in Juventus striker Timothy Weah. Villa came closest to breaking the deadlock at the end of the first half when Digne’s 20-yard free-kick clipped the top of the crossbar and went over. Martinez then produced his brilliant save just after the hour. A corner made its way through to the far post where Conceicao was primed to head in at the far post, but Martinez sprawled himself across goal to scoop the ball away. The game looked to be petering out until a last-gasp free-kick saw Rogers slam home, but whistle-happy official Gil Manzano halted the celebrations by ruling the goal out.None

The NSE Nifty 50 finds immediate support near 24,550, with key resistance positioned at the 25,000–25,200 levels. Analysts highlight further resistance in the 25,200–25,400 zone while maintaining a positive outlook as long as the index stays above 24,300. "Technically, the support base now shifts upward towards 24,500 on an intermediate basis, which is likely to cushion any intra-week blips, followed by a sacrosanct support zone placed from the 24,350–24,250 zone," according to Osho Krishnan, senior analyst of technical and derivatives at Angel One. "On the higher end of the spectrum, 24,800, followed by 25,000–25,100, is likely to be seen as the next potential resistance for the benchmark index in the upcoming week," Krishnan said. Technically, on the daily chart, the index took a pause after a strong rally and formed a small red candle, while on the weekly chart, it formed a strong bullish candle, indicating strength, according to Hrishikesh Yedve, assistant vice president for technical and derivatives research at Asit C Mehta Investment Interrmediates Ltd. Yedve noted that, additionally, the index has witnessed a breakout from an inverted head and shoulders pattern. "As per this breakout, the index could test 25,000–25,200 levels in the medium term. Immediate support is placed near 24,550, followed by 24,300. As long as the Nifty stays above 24,300, traders should adopt a buy-on-dips strategy," he said. "As RBI reduced the CRR by 50 bps to 4% in line with market expectations, this move is expected to enhance liquidity in the financial system, support credit growth, and aid economic recovery. The repo rate was maintained at 6.5%, showcasing a balanced approach to managing inflation while fostering growth," according to Siddhartha Khemka, head of research, wealth management, Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd. "Next week, we expect Nifty to maintain its gradual upmove, driven by a potential increase in liquidity post RBI’s CRR cut, positive news flows around government policies, and the return of FII inflows," said Khemka. Bank Nifty settled the day on a marginally negative note at 53,510 levels. "On the higher side, the index could attempt to test levels of 54,000–54,500 in the short term. On the downside, 52,850 will act as immediate support for the index, followed by 52,500," said Yedve. So, he advised traders to adopt a buy-on-dips strategy in Bank Nifty. Nabers has been open at times about his frustration as the losses have piled up and like Daboll, was asked to comment on the plane. (The Center Square) – The Illinois House speaker’s executive assistant has reported to the witness stand at former House Speaker Michael Madigan’s corruption trial. Mika Baugher has worked for Illinois House Speaker Chris Welch, D-Hillside, since 2021. Baugher was Madigan’s executive assistant from 2017-2021. Madigan had been speaker for all but two years from 1983 to 2021. Baugher previously worked in the speaker’s office from 2001 to2010 and returned in 2013. U.S. government attorney Julia Schwartz introduced pages of Madigan’s schedules over a period of years, which included meetings and dinners with Madigan’s codefendant Michael McClain. The schedules also included meetings with Reyes Kurson law partner Victor Reyes, Madigan campaign worker Ed Moody, state Reps. Eddie Acevedo, D-Chicago, and Mike Zalewski, D-Riverside, Gov. J.B. Pritzker and others. AT&T Associate Director of Technology Jack Randall, who oversees wireless records for the company, took the stand Tuesday afternoon after former Chicago Alderman Daniel Solis finished his testimony. Randall discussed AT&T’s wireless network with a focus on the years 2017 and 2018. Randall explained that any given call might not go through the network’s nearest processing center. Randall reviewed and verified six calls that had been presented as government exhibits. Prosecutors played several recordings of McClain Tuesday, including conversations with former Madigan chief of staff Tim Mapes. In a call with state Rep. Bob Rita, D-Blue Island, McClain warned Rita about emails related to a gaming bill. McClain advised Rita not to put things in print and said, “The feds are gonna look at it.” Government attorney Sarah Streicher then played a series of calls related to gaming legislation. In one recording, McClain said he was a “Madigan’s agent” and that he was “guiding Rita.” Earlier Tuesday, McClain defense attorney John Mitchell resumed his cross-examination of Solis. After Mitchell asked Solis about his city pension of “approximately $100,000” per year, Solis said it was important to him as a government cooperator to keep his pension. Solis said he understood that his truthful cooperation could lead to the dismissal of his remaining bribery charge and thereby allow him to keep his pension. When asked by Mitchell, Solis affirmed that he was a well-respected alderman and Latino leader in Chicago. At times during Mitchell’s cross-examination of Solis, McClain had his elbows on the table in front of him with his head lowered against his clasped hands. Mitchell referred to a videotaped meeting at Solis’ City Hall office on Dec. 18, 2017, when Solis and McClain discussed the proposed development of state-owned land in Chicago’s Chinatown neighborhood. During the conversation, Solis mentioned developers Eddie Ni and Ray Chin and then-Speaker Madigan. “Eddie and Ray, have always been, well, not Eddie, ‘cause he’s recently maybe the last five years, but Ray, for the 22 years I’ve been here, he’s always been a strong supporter. Listens to my advice and everything. And so, in the past, I have been able to steer some work to Mike. And these guys will do the same thing. And then, so I’m hoping whatever happens in this 2019, 2018 election that this is gonna go through,” Solis told McClain. The Chinatown project faced opposition from then-Illinois Transportation Secretary Randy Blankenhorn, who served under Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner. In undercover video former Chicago Alderman Daniel Solis captured for federal investigators on Dec. 18, 2017, Solis meets with Michael McClain, codefendant in the corruption case against former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan. During the meeting with Solis, McClain expressed optimism that the project might still go through. McClain also offered a “dual path,” with Democrat J.B. Pritzker projected to defeat Rauner in the gubernatorial election the following year. “Instead of just keeping it quiet, if that’s what we think is happening, then we wanna get inside the Pritzker group. So in 2019, the Pritzker IDOT will say, “OK,” McClain told Solis. After Mitchell finished, government attorney Diane MacArthur asked for a sidebar discussion, which led to an early lunch break at Judge John Robert Blakey’s direction. MacArthur introduced a recording of a phone call from Oct. 10, 2014, before Solis began cooperating with the government in 2016. During the call, Madigan asked Solis for an introduction to developer Michael Chivini of The Pizzuti Companies. Madigan attorney Dan Collins asked Solis if, in cooperation with the government, he was investigating conduct or people. Solis said he thought he was investigating crimes. When Collins asked if he was asked to develop evidence against Madigan, Solis said, “I’m not sure how to answer that.” Collins pressed Solis about one of his visits to a massage parlor, which Solis said he did at the government’s instruction. MacArthur objected and called for a sidebar. Shortly after, Judge Blakey told Solis he could step down. In undercover video former Chicago Alderman Daniel Solis captured for federal investigators on Dec. 18, 2017, Solis meets with Michael McClain, codefendant in the corruption case against former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan. The jury was not seated until 9:59 a.m. Tuesday, after Blakey met with prosecutors and defense attorneys over “legal matters.” The judge called for an early lunch shortly after 11 a.m., again due to “legal matters” that involved attorneys resolving several issues. Blakey allowed prosecutors to address Solis’ cooperation in other investigations, including the corruption trial of former Chicago Alderman Ed Burke. The judge, however, instructed government attorneys not to use Burke’s name during redirect testimony. Prosecutors agreed to defense attorneys’ request that Burke be referred to as a “high-ranking official” instead of a “high-ranking alderman.” Madigan’s defense team had earlier objected to potential testimony from AT&T's Randall. McClain’s defense team joined the objection, but attorneys from all sides resolved the issues before the jury returned from lunch. Connie Mixon, professor of Political Science and director of the Urban Studies Program at Elmhurst University, told The Center Square that government attorneys have a lot of material. “They have many counts. They’re hoping that at least some of those counts are going to stick, and (they) usually have built a solid foundation upon which to make their case,” Mixon explained. Madigan and McClain are charged with 23 counts of bribery, racketeering and official misconduct in connection with a scheme that federal prosecutors referred to as "Madigan Enterprise." Prosecutors allege that ComEd and AT&T Illinois gave out no-work or little-work jobs and contract work to those loyal to Madigan to get legislation passed that would benefit them in Springfield. Four ComEd executives and lobbyists were convicted last year in a related trial, and ComEd itself agreed to pay $200 million in fines as part of a deferred prosecution agreement with prosecutors. Madigan served in the Illinois House from 1971 to 2021. He was speaker for all but two years between 1983 and 2021. Madigan also chaired the Democratic Party of Illinois from 1998 to 2021. McClain was a longtime lobbyist who previously served as a state representative in Illinois’ 48th district from 1973 to 1982. The trial is scheduled to resume Wednesday at the Everett McKinley Dirksen U.S. Courthouse in Chicago.None

Lewis scores 18 as Toledo knocks off Defiance 111-49NEW YORK — Police don't know who he is, where he is, or why he did it. As the frustrating search for UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson’s killer got underway for a fifth day Sunday, investigators reckoned with a tantalizing contradiction: They have troves of evidence, but the shooter remains an enigma. One conclusion they are confident of, however: It was a targeted attack , not a random one. They know he ambushed Thompson at 6:44 a.m. Wednesday as the executive arrived at the Hilton for his company’s annual investor conference, using a 9 mm pistol that resembled the guns farmers use to put down animals without causing a loud noise. They know ammunition found near Thompson’s body bore the words “delay,” “deny” and “depose,” mimicking a phrase used by insurance industry critics . The fact that the shooter knew UnitedHealthcare group was holding a conference at the hotel and what route Thompson might take to get there suggested that he could possibly be a disgruntled employee or client, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said. Police divers were seen searching a pond in Central Park, where the killer fled after the shooting. Officers have been scouring the park for days for any possible clues and found his backpack there Friday. They didn’t immediately reveal what, if anything, it contained but said it would be tested and analyzed. On Sunday morning, police declined to comment on the contents of the backpack, or on the results of the search in the pond, saying no updates were planned. Investigators have urged patience, saying the process of logging evidence that stands up in court isn’t as quick as it looks like on TV . Hundreds of detectives are combing through video recordings and social media, vetting tips from the public and interviewing people who might have information, including Thompson’s family and coworkers and the shooter’s randomly assigned roommates at the Manhattan hostel where he stayed. Investigators caught a break when they came across security camera images of an unguarded moment at the hostel in which he briefly showed his face. Retracing the gunman’s steps using surveillance video, police say, it appears he left the city by bus soon after the shooting outside the New York Hilton Midtown. He was seen on video at an uptown bus station about 45 minutes later, Kenny said. With the high-profile search expanding across state lines, the FBI announced late Friday that it was offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction, adding to a reward of up to $10,000 that the NYPD has offered. Police say they believe the suspect acted alone. Police distributed the images to news outlets and on social media but so far haven’t been able to ID him using facial recognition — possibly because of the angle of the images or limitations on how the NYPD is allowed to use that technology, Kenny said. Late Saturday, police released two additional photos of the suspected shooter that appeared to be from a camera mounted inside a taxi. The first shows him outside the vehicle and the second shows him looking through the partition between the back seat and the front of the cab. In both, his face is partially obscured by a blue, medical-style mask.Saints quarterback Derek Carr appears to have a broken left hand. That’s the Saints’ fear after the initial examination of the injury that knocked Carr out of today’s game against the Giants, according to NFL Network. Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reported that Carr had his left hand in a cast after the game. Although the injury is not to Carr’s throwing hand, it would be tough for him to take a snap with a broken hand, and he would seem likely to miss some time. Given that the Saints are far out of playoff contention and there’s only four games left in the season, it wouldn’t be surprising if his season is over. It also wouldn’t be surprising if his tenure with the Saints is over, given his contract and the realities of the Saints’ salary cap situation. It’s possible that attempting to leap for a first down and putting his left hand down to break his fall will be the last thing he does in a Saints uniform.

He said: “I think Aberdeen have had a terrific start. There wasn’t a lot in the first game we played them but they have grown since then. The results have been fantastic so credit to the manager and the players but also to Dave Cormack [chairman], the board and Alan Burrows [chief executive] for the backing they have given financially. You have to admire and respect that. “They have a really good squad so that after 60-70 minutes, they change it. They have a real energy coming off the bench. We’ve got targets and you need a long, long list when you’re St Mirren manager because most of them disappear for financial reasons or because they don’t want to come to Scotland.” Robbo says back-up keeper Peter Urminsky has agreed a contract extension but isn’t hopeful Richard Taylor and Toyosi Olusanya will accept deals currently on the table. “There’s been no further progress,” he added. “It looks at this moment in time that we won’t be able to come to an agreement which we respect. “We won’t give up. Tice, who is from Houston and whose work had been published by The Washington Post, McClatchy newspapers and other outlets. A video released weeks after Tice went missing showed him blindfolded and held by armed men and saying, “Oh, Jesus.” He has not been heard from since. Syria has publicly denied that it was holding him. The United States has no new evidence that Tice is alive, but continues to operate under the assumption he is alive, according to a U.S. official. The official, who was not authorized to comment publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity, said the U.S. will continue to work to identify where he is and to try to bring him home. His mother, Debra, said at a news conference Friday in Washington that the family had information from a “significant source,” whom she did not identify, establishing that her son was alive. “He is being cared for and he is well — we do know that,” she said. The Tice family met this past week with officials at the State Department and the White House. “To everyone in Syria that hears this, please remind people that we’re waiting for Austin,” Debra Tice said in comments that hostage advocacy groups spread on social media Sunday. “We know that when he comes out, he’s going to be fairly dazed & he’s going to need lots of care & direction. Direct him to his family please!”

Luke Littler, the teenage darts sensation, demonstrated his immense respect for Fallon Sherrock while discussing their potential match-up at the PDC World Darts Championship. Sherrock, known as the 'Queen of the Palace', will face Ryan Meikle in the tournament's first round next month. If she triumphs over the Englishman, a tantalising clash with last year's finalist awaits her. Littler, who enters the competition in the second round as one of the top 32 players globally, broke his silence on the possibility of facing Sherrock following this week's draw announcement. The champion expressed his admiration for the 30-year-old who shocked the sports world in 2019 by becoming the first woman to win a world championship match, eventually reaching the third round. READ MORE: 2025 World Darts Championship draw in full as Luke Littler and Luke Humphries learn opponents READ MORE: How you can win £60,000 for watching World Darts Championship He recalled how "it was incredible to watch" when he was just 12-years-old. Speaking to Sky Sports, the now 17-year-old said: "If I do come across her, I don't know what the crowd would be like. Against Fallon, it might be a bit different. I don't think anyone really missed it [when Sherrock reached the third round]. It was incredible to watch." Almost a year after his own spectacular run at the tournament, Littler confessed he's feeling the "buzz" and is eagerly counting down the days until his return to Ally Pally. He commented on the upcoming match: "Good luck to them both. It should be a really interesting game, because Ryan's playing really good, and so is Fallon. "It won't be easy [against either of them]. No game will be easy this year, but it'll be a tough test for both of them facing each other in the first round. Either way, I'm very confident, whoever wins. I just can't wait to get on stage. Ever since the Worlds [last year] it has been crazy – this is where it all started for me. The buzz is there, I can feel it." After failing to progress past the first round in her last three appearances at the world championships, Fallon Sherrock is hoping that her next attempt will be more successful, potentially setting up a tie with the teenage prodigy. Sherrock shared her anticipation for the competition on X (formerly Twitter), following the draw announcement: "So I now know I'll be playing Ryan Meikle in round one at the @OfficialPDC World Championship," she posted. "The winner will play a certain Mr Littler in round two. Can't wait to play at the Palace again."Seattle Times staffers teamed up to choose their favorite shows from this year — all of which premiered, had a new season or debuted in the U.S. in 2024 — with picks ranging from the sublime "Shōgun" ( one of Google's Top 10 most-searched TV shows of the year ) to the eye-wateringly expensive (and worth every penny) "Arcane," along with new seasons of "From," "Industry" and more. Here are the shows that had us talking, in alphabetical order. Where to watch: Streaming on Netflix I’m still grieving the end of “Arcane,” the $250 million , 18-episode animated two-season Netflix series based on the lore from Riot Games’ League of Legends video game franchise. This Shakespearean tragedy makes you feel for estranged sisters Vi (Hailee Steinfeld) and Jinx (Ella Purnell), lovers Caitlyn (Katie Leung) and Vi, mother Ambessa (Ellen Thomas) and daughter Mel (Toks Olagundoye), childhood friends Ekko (Reed Shannon) and Jinx, and best friends Jayce (Kevin Alejandro) and Viktor (Harry Lloyd) — foils who sometimes find each other on opposite sides of a war. Season 2 also begins with grief. After Jinx’s cannon blew up a Piltover tower, the city is in mourning. Caitlyn is mourning her mother, who died in the blast. Vi is mourning her sister, who forsook her name Powder for Jinx. And Jinx is mourning her surrogate father, Silco (Jason Spisak). “Arcane” excels in the way it humanizes both heroes and villains, balancing the threads of more than half a dozen characters and storylines with equal weight. I want to rewind time like Ekko does — to live with these characters a little longer and to watch them grow. But to move forward, sometimes we have to leave something behind. — Qina Liu, senior news producer Where to watch: Streaming on Hulu An uproarious, tenderhearted blend of "Heartstopper" and "Sex Education," the 2022 British sitcom "Big Boys" is everything a coming-of-age show should be: witty, relatable and honest. The first two seasons, which became available on this side of the pond this month via Hulu, center on 19-year-old Jack (a semi-fictional version of series creator and writer Jack Rooke and played by Dylan Llewellyn), who's dealing with the death of his father, contending with his sexuality and leaving home for the first time as he heads to university. But for all the heavy topics "Big Boys" smartly grapples with — grief, loss, sex, family, mental health — the heart of "Big Boys" is a dazzlingly endearing and crudely humorous friendship between two young men (one gay, one straight; a platonic relationship you rarely see in media) who you desperately hope remain friends for the rest of their lives. I may have understood about only 50% of the jokes — the show is very, very British — but I do know that Season 3 can't get here soon enough . — Dominic Baez, features desk editor Where to watch: Streaming on Netflix Say "yes, and ..." to martial arts sequences interspersed with clips of "The Great British Bake Off." And yes to knife fights featuring adults dressed in inflatable dinosaur costumes at a children's party. And yes to hideouts inside John Cho's mansion, Buldak noodles, Asian water monitors, "Gymkata" and Fall Out Men (the fictional Filipino Fall Out Boy cover band). "The Brothers Sun" feels like an improv sketch — full of surprises and defying expectations. At its core, this Emmy-nominated show is about family — what happens after Bruce Sun's (Sam Song Li) life as a Los Angeles college student and aspiring improv actor gets interrupted by a reunion with his assassin brother Charles "Chairleg" Sun (Justin Chien), who clues him into his family's secret. Their father, Big Sun (Johnny Kou), is the head of the Jade Dragons, one of eight Taiwanese crime bosses — and the rival gangs may be after their mother (Michelle Yeoh). How much of yourself and your humanity will you sacrifice to honor and protect your family? This is an Asian American story for anyone who knows it's a crime to wear outside shoes inside the house. — Qina Liu Where to watch: Streaming on Netflix In May, all I could think about was food. I dreamed of dim sum and piping hot pizza, and craved lemony Caesar salad. In reality, my post-tonsillectomy world was frozen fruit pops and lukewarm boxed soup grumpily eaten on my couch. So was it a touch masochistic to start "Delicious in Dungeon" when it physically hurt to eat? Maybe. And yet I followed adventurers Laios, Marcille and Chilchuck as they found allies and battled their way through an endless dungeon crawling with monsters. "Delicious in Dungeon" — a dubbed anime based on writer and illustrator Ryoko Kui's manga series of the same name — is ostensibly about the group's efforts to rescue Falin, Laios' sister, and uncover the mystery of the Mad Mage. But if you're hangry and your throat is on fire, this show becomes an envy-watch about how monster-eating-curious Laios and Senshi, a friendly wok-toting dwarf, cook drool-worthy meals out of defeated foes for their often-horrified comrades. (I don't know who gave anime the right to make cartoon-ified foods look even better than their real-world counterparts, but Hippogriff soup dumplings, Man-eating Plant tarts and Walking Mushroom hot pot sound really good when your main food group is Popsicles, OK??) While episodes can occasionally blend together, the charm of "Delicious in Dungeon" is in the repetition of its ingredients — action, emotional moments and silly high jinks. Because what sick kid wouldn't want a second helping of that (perhaps with a side of Sky Fish and chips)? — Ana Sofia, assistant features editor Where to watch: Streaming on Hulu I’m not entirely proud of my 2024 TV habits, but I will say they’ve been focused — focused on finding the most wholesome, uplifting reality dating show around. Sure, some spicy “Too Hot Too Handle” or “FBoy Island” can be fun now and again, but the pointless drama among gorgeous humans chasing influencer status gets tiring. I’m looking for genuine contestants I can root for wholeheartedly, 100% believing they’re there for the right reasons (to find true and lasting love, of course). The winner as of yet is ... “Farmer Wants a Wife”! The premise is simple: Farmers who lack opportunities to meet women due to being busy with, well, farming, get the chance to date from a pool of ladies brought in from different cities. Meanwhile, the women get a taste of farm life (dates have included castrating a bull and building a fence) to determine if they could thrive as a farmer’s wife. Even though my favorite couple ultimately split up because the woman didn't want to drop everything to move to a ranch in Georgia (understandable, I suppose), the show’s earnest-feeling characters and sentimental moments balanced out the expected, dating-show drama delightfully. — Sarah-Mae McCullough, features producer Where to watch: Streaming on MGM+ Three seasons into this genuinely scary, intricate puzzle of a show and I’m only more committed to seeing where it goes. Scary monsters! Equally scary interpersonal dramas! Strange kids and creepy dolls and resurfacing memories, oh my. The setting: a small town where people mysteriously arrive from all over the country after whatever road they were driving on somehow redirects them to this hamlet of horrors. At night, ghastly creatures stalk the streets in human form, knocking at windows and luring the living to grisly deaths. In the third season, which wrapped in November, we’re seeing more of the monsters behind their grinning faces, but the mystery only gets more mysterious and more emotional as time goes on. What’s causing this nightmare? Why are these people trapped here, and how can they ever get home? Harold Perrineau delivers an expert performance as the town’s de facto sheriff, a standout in an all-around excellent ensemble cast. — Gemma Wilson, arts and culture writer Where to watch: Streaming on Max Since its premiere four years ago, “Industry” has been the best HBO show you’ve likely never heard of. After Season 3, its best season yet, aired over the summer, you’re officially late to the (cocaine-fueled) party. In the simplest terms, “Industry” is about sex, drugs and unfathomable sums of money. The financial drama is centered on a group of young investment bankers — Harper (Myha’la), Yasmin (Marisa Abela) and Rob (Harry Lawtey) — and longtime manager Eric (Ken Leung) as they work on the trading floor of a fictional London bank called Pierpoint and deal with the risks and rewards associated with such a relentless (and entertaining) lifestyle. By the third season, “Industry” has very much leaned into the fact that these are some of the most selfish people on television, unafraid to backstab, name-call and undercut anyone they work with for personal gain. But the moral ambiguity is “Industry’s” most engaging feature. Class — the economic and social statuses at which these characters started and ultimately aspire to be — is behind every decision the characters make, and their complexities are the show’s driving force. It makes for quite a ride. And given its willingness to constantly reinvent itself, especially with the end of Season 3 seemingly hitting a reset button, I cannot wait to see where “Industry” takes us next. — Chris Cole, sports producer Where to watch: Streaming on Hulu My hell is filled with TVs showing early 2000s blockbuster comedies, slapstick humor and other physical gags. (The cringe! I can’t take it!) But I love murder mysteries, which is why I gave this comedic, star-studded whodunit a chance when it first aired in 2021. Now in its fourth and best season, I’ve come to love the show’s central, ersatz detective trio, consisting of a deadpan millennial (Selena Gomez), washed-up actor (Steve Martin) and Broadway director-slash-flailing diva (Martin Short). The plot twist: Sure, "Only Murders" is a genuine mystery, but the reason you keep coming back? It’s plain old fun . The actors are having a palpable blast as larger-than-life characters: Paul Rudd as an unhinged stunt double with — for some reason — an Irish accent; the suave, delightful Jane Lynch; the fast-talking Molly Shannon as a zinger-prone movie exec; plus Eva Longoria, Eugene Levy and Zach Galifianakis gleefully portraying some version of themselves. And then there’s Melissa McCarthy, who is fantastic as a suburban, doll-collecting, wigged-out Long Islander who throws Meryl Streep (!) over a couch in a farcical fight. You almost forget there’s also a murder being solved. Few shows remain worth watching beyond a first season — but much like its characters, this show grows better with age. — Margo Vansynghel, arts economy reporter Where to watch: Streaming on Hulu Historical dramas in general, and historical fiction in particular, have never really been my cup of tea; the lavish, transfixing “Shōgun” has me reconsidering that stance. Based on the 1975 novel by James Clavell (but separate from the 1980 miniseries of the same name), “Shōgun” is a showstopper full of superb acting, pitch-perfect writing, stellar pacing and lush visuals. The 10-episodes series, set in Japan in 1600, is at its core a story about entwining fates; of two men, so foreign to each other at first, becoming inextricably linked to one another as the world seemingly conspires against them. A grand epic in scale, “Shōgun” still revels in the details; the attention to authenticity throughout — particularly its Japanese elements, from the music to the clothes — is marvelous, and it elevates the show as a whole. Originally a limited series, we’ve already been told that “Shōgun” will continue for at least two more seasons. Though we don’t know exactly what those new seasons will entail just yet, I do know this: I’m eager for another (fictional) history lesson. — Dominic Baez Where to watch: Streaming on cwtv.com I’m going to miss Smallville. Over four seasons, The CW’s “Superman & Lois” has consistently been one of the best superhero shows on TV: punchy with its action, engaging with its story arcs and charming with its leads. But what made it more than your typically enjoyable but ultimately derivative CW superhero show was that it never really felt like a superhero show at all; it’s about family and loss, love and regret, maturity and naiveté, all those oh-so-relatable trials we all go through (and yes, maybe some world-saving along the way). And that’s never been truer than in the fourth, final and fantastic season of the series, which wraps up the story of Clark Kent/Superman (Tyler Hoechlin), Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch), their children and the town of Smallville as they face their greatest challenge yet in the form of the sadistic Lex Luthor (Michael Cudlitz). Despite its truncated, 10-episode run, Season 4 delivers a powerhouse send-off for the Man of Steel, shining a glorious light on the last son of Krypton’s humanity and reminding us once again that Superman flies highest when his feet are planted firmly on the ground. I’m a bit melancholic that “it went by so fast” (if you know, you know), but I’m glad I got to experience the journey nonetheless. Truth, justice and a better tomorrow, indeed. — Dominic Baezpanalo.999

Ituka scores 18 off the bench, Jacksonville State downs East Carolina 86-78Fern Britton reveals 'uneasy' family secret that she didn't discover until she was in her 50sThiruvananthapuram : Senior Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP from Thiruvananthapuram, Shashi Tharoor , has said that Kerala's startup ecosystem has become a glittering jewel in the crown of India's fast-growing startup landscape by demonstrating its prowess in innovation, inventiveness, sustainability, and inclusiveness. Tharoor, a four-time Lok Sabha MP, said this while speaking at the Huddle Global 2024, India's flagship startup conclave, here on Saturday. Tharoor, an eminent writer, former diplomat, and thought leader, titled his address "The Elephant that is becoming a tiger: India's Startup Ecosystem and tech entrepreneurship", an obvious reference to his book "The Elephant, the Tiger & the Cellphone". While hailing the achievements of Kerala's startup ecosystem, Tharoor said the state needs to further streamline regulatory compliances and procedures to enable aspirational entrepreneurs to start enterprises, attract capital, and grow faster. "We need to simplify and streamline regulatory compliances and procedures by dismantling the oppressive red tape," he added. Tracing the evolution of the Indian startup ecosystem, the Congress leader said this was the time to think about making a single imaginative leap to add greater momentum to what has been achieved. "The elephant is becoming a tiger as startups symbolise industriousness, innovation, and inventiveness, playing a vital role in the remarkable transformation of the country," Tharoor added. He also said that while coming out with novel and ingenious solutions, the startups have also shown that everything is reusable and re-imaginable. "The surge of entrepreneurial culture also helped to turn India from a country of job-seekers to a job-creating economy, though it is a paradox that increasing unemployment has sharpened the youth's entrepreneurial spirit," he added. Lauding Kerala Startup Mission for positioning its flagship startup festival into a major event that brings together the entire spectrum of stakeholders, Tharoor said "it is amazing" that a lot of products from robots, home automation, and medical technology from the startups are displayed here.

NoneLUBBOCK, Texas — Tahj Brooks ran for a season-high 188 yards and three touchdowns in the final home game for Texas Tech’s all-time leading rusher, and the Red Raiders rolled to a 52-15 victory over West Virginia on Saturday. Texas Tech (8-4, 6-3) kept alive faint hopes for a bid in the Big 12 championship game by winning at least eight games in the regular season for the first time since 2009 under the late Mike Leach. Garrett Greene threw an interception and lost a fumble on Terrell Tilmon’s strip sack in the final three minutes of the first half as the Mountaineers (6-6, 5-4) raised more questions about the future of coach Neal Brown by falling behind 35-3 before the break. Behren Morton threw for 359 yards and two touchdowns, including a 31-yarder to Caleb Douglas to put Texas Tech in front 42-3 early in the second half. Josh Kelly had 150 yards receiving. Red Raiders coach Joey McGuire, who will have his third winning record in three seasons, called timeout with 5 minutes, 57 seconds remaining and his team leading 45-15 to take Brooks out of the game. Brooks was mobbed by teammates as the crowd gave him a standing ovation. Brooks ran for at least 100 yards in all 11 regular-season games he played, breaking the single-season school record of 10 he shared with Byron Hanspard and Bam Morris. Brooks pushed his career total to 4,557 yards in his first home game since breaking Hanspard’s 1996 school record of 4,219 yards two weeks ago at Jones AT&T Stadium. Two of Brooks’ TDs came on 2-yard runs from direct snaps, and the other was a 37-yarder when he stumbled on a cut but stayed on his feet and bounced off defensive back Ty French. Brooks has 17 TDs rushing this season and 45 for his career. Brooks set up one of his short TDs with a 30-yard catch. Jahiem White ran for 124 yards with a spinning 21-yard touchdown for West Virginia, and Greene had a 15-yard scoring toss to Rodney Gallagher III. Greene threw two picks. The Mountaineers’ perfect season on the road in the Big 12 ended with a thud. They were 3-0 away from home in conference before allowing 29 second-quarter points followed by another TD just 2:12 into the third. Texas Tech tight end Jalin Conyers, one of Brooks’ fellow seniors playing his final home game, made up a for a dropped pass in the end zone with a juggling, diving catch for 18 yards to set up Morton’s 1-yard scoring toss to Mason Tharp. Conyers, an Arizona State transfer, also had a 2-point conversion run on a swinging gate play from the PAT unit. Both teams are eligible for bowl games.

The Centre of Excellence for Millets and Incubation Centre was launched at the CSIR-CFTRI here. Minister for Agriculture N. Cheluvarayaswamy inaugurated the facility on the CFTRI campus on Friday. The facility has come up with the support from the State government. CSIR-CFTRI director Sridevi Annapurna Singh, Ramesh Bandisidde Gowda, K. Harish Gowda, MLAs, former council chairman V.R. Sudarshan, Commissioner for Agriculture Y.S. Patil, and scientists from the institute were present. After the launch, the Minister went around the facility and got the details from the scientists on the millet-based products and the technologies developed by the institute over the years that can be transferred for commercial production. The scientists explained the initiatives taken up for promoting millets, especially after the year 2023 was declared as the International Year of Millets. Established at a cost of ₹20 crore with funding from the Karnataka government, the CFTRI, which has been working on millets since past 17 years, developing over 60 technologies till date, aims to reach out or transfer its technologies to farmers, entrepreneurs, women SHGs and others to market the products, focussing on the longer shelf life of the products without compromising on the taste and nutritional value. With India being the one the world’s largest producers of millets, contributing 19 percent of the global production, the institute aims to help reach out the millet products to the global markets, addressing the issues concerning the shelf life. Three units have come up at the centre under the initiative with the combined production capacity ranging from 500 kilos to one tonne. More than 50 farmers had accompanied the Minister as the CFTRI aims to train farmers and others in millet processing, and make them entrepreneurs. The CFTRI last year developed 12 new technologies. The new technologies include ragi-based malt hydrolysate, malted ragi-based ready-to-eat weaning food, a process for the production of multigrain waffles, and multigrain pizza base. The focus of the technologies was on millets since 2023 was the International Year of Millets. Other technologies are finger-millet semolina, instant finger-millet ragi rava idli mix, instant finger-millet halwa mix, instant finger-millet upma mix, millet and multi millet puttu podi mix, cleaner process for biotechnological production of spirulina, and ready-to-use multigrain idli and dosa batter in retail packs The ready-to-eat malted ragi-based weaning food that was also developed is suitable for children of the age group of six months to three. Notably, fruits like apples, mangoes, oranges, and vegetables like carrots or tomatoes can be incorporated in the food, the scientists said. Albanese facing a new mood of pick and kickRuben Amorim's first Man United task was to reshape their leaky defence but he's made it even worse - the fragilities that plagued Erik ten Hag are still apparent, writes CHRIS WHEELER Ruben Amorim has set about establishing his philosophy at Manchester United But the club's defence has only become more vulnerable since he took over LISTEN NOW: It's All Kicking Off! Are Tottenham managers treated differently to other managers? By CHRIS WHEELER Published: 22:30 GMT, 23 December 2024 | Updated: 22:45 GMT, 23 December 2024 e-mail View comments As Ruben Amorim spoke to the media after Manchester United were humbled at home by Bournemouth on Sunday, water began to drip from the roof of the auditorium at Old Trafford. Leaks are appearing just about everywhere at United these days, whether it is the stadium, Amorim’s team selections or, most worryingly of all, his defence. If there was a sense of deja vu about Bournemouth winning here 3-0 before Christmas again, the sight of United conceding the first goal from another set-piece felt even more familiar. Only Wolves have a worse record than United, who have conceded nine goals from free-kicks or corners in the league this season and 17 times in total in 2024. That is a club record and there are still two more games to go — against Wolves at Molineux on Boxing Day and at home to Newcastle on December 30. Perhaps most worrying of all for United is that their defensive problems have only got worse under new head coach Ruben Amorim, who has insisted on playing a back three since taking over in November. Amorim has the highest ratio of goals (and set-piece goals) conceded per game of any United boss in the Premier League era. Ruben Amorim efforts to shore up Man United's defence have so far proved unsuccessful United currently have the second-worst defensive record in the league, behind only Wolves The club's weaknesses defending set pieces were once again laid bare in their defeat by Bournemouth In Amorim’s defence, he was parachuted in mid-season to improve a situation that was not of his making, using players he hasn’t signed. United’s most expensive summer buy, £59million Leny Yoro, has only recently recovered from a broken metatarsal, Tyrell Malacia is working his way back from an 18-month lay-off, Luke Shaw and Victor Lindelof have both broken down on their comebacks, Harry Maguire was out of action for nearly two months and Matthijs de Ligt has missed the defeats by Spurs and Bournemouth through illness. But the teething problems experienced under Amorim, and the frailties at the back, are starting to cause concern as United suffer the embarrassment of being in the bottom half of the table at Christmas for the first time in 35 years. Indeed, 13th position after six league games — and three defeats — under the Portuguese is only one place better off than when Erik ten Hag was sacked in October. This is no longer simply a bad start. The Newcastle game will mark the halfway point of the season as United struggle to avoid dropping even lower than last season when Ten Hag’s eighth-place finish was United’s worst in the Premier League era. Ten Hag’s side had a goal difference of minus one and United are in the same situation now, having struggled to score at one end and keep them out at the other. Amorim senses a nervousness when they play out from the back, and a fragility that saw both Spurs and Bournemouth score goals in quick succession — an issue that also plagued Ten Hag. ‘Two goals very quickly, like against Tottenham,’ he said. ‘You want to respond but you cannot do it because you suffer another goal, and then we suffer until the end of the game. It’s one of our focuses to maintain the calm when you concede a goal.’ Amorim's No 2 Carlos Fernandes has been tasked with finding a solution to their vulnerabilities United's backline have also suffered with injuries, and only recently welcomed summer signing Leny Yoro back into the fold Set-pieces have become a particular worry with United conceding a league-high 41 per cent from them this season. Amorim has taken away the responsibility for set-pieces from first-team coach Andreas Georgson, who was brought in by Ten Hag in the summer, and given it to his No 2 Carlos Fernandes. Read More Man United boss Ruben Amorim questions advice given to Marcus Rashford At every corner or free-kick, both attacking and defending, Amorim and Fernandes will swap places in the technical area like clockwork, as if they were two figures in a weather house. But the situation has only got worse with United conceding five goals from set-pieces in Amorim’s six games at a rate of 0.83. Across all competitions, set-pieces have led to goals seven times in six games. As with every game under the new Portuguese coaching team, United’s players crowded into the penalty box during the warm-up on Sunday and practised defending Bruno Fernandes’s set-pieces. Yet United held out for less than half an hour as young Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen rose to head in from Ryan Christie’s free-kick. It doesn’t help that Amorim has rotated his line-up, and back three, to try to keep players fresh and get his ideas across — or that United aren’t blessed with a great deal of height when Yoro or Maguire don’t play. ‘All the areas are of concern, especially set-pieces,’ admitted Amorim. ‘We are training on that and we have to improve. There’s a lot of teams that are really strong on it, so we’re working on it a lot. We don’t have much time to explain but we’ll try. ‘Nothing bad lasts forever and nothing good lasts forever, so we must be very strong in our ideas — especially in the bad moments.’ Manchester United Ruben Amorim Share or comment on this article: Ruben Amorim's first Man United task was to reshape their leaky defence but he's made it even worse - the fragilities that plagued Erik ten Hag are still apparent, writes CHRIS WHEELER e-mail Add comment

What the US can learn from Australia’s new social media ban for kidsPhoto: The Canadian Press Michael Nantais, manager at vertical microgreens outfit Living Earth Farm, poses for a photograph in Toronto, Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2024. It was a Netflix documentary Michael Nantais watched during the early months of the pandemic that cemented his love of sustainable farming. Nantais, who grew up just outside of Montreal in Pointe-Claire, started experimenting in his mother's backyard — growing kale, cucumbers, and zucchinis for the first time more than four years ago. "I didn't really know much at that time," the now 26-year-old said. "I was buying seedlings and planting them." Then came the rush of changes to his life and career plans. Nantais switched from an economics degree at university to a biology program to learn more about plants. He focused on learning everything about farming — first from a plant soil lab and later at a vertical farm in Montreal. Vertical farming stacks crops vertically in layers, typically in an indoor setup, which allows farmers to control lighting, humidity, and temperature. It's gaining popularity, especially in urban areas. "Was my mind set on vertical farming when I switched to biology? The answer is no," Nantais recalled. "I was open-minded ... I just wanted to learn," he said. Younger Canadians may not own the farmland or heavy machinery needed to launch traditional agriculture careers, but they are equipped with technology. That's changing how they get their foot in the door — even when they don't come from farm families. Traditionally, many agriculture students came from rural areas and planned to take over a farm eventually, said Jay Steeves, dean of Werklund School of Agriculture & Technology at Olds College in Alberta. Now, more students from urban areas are joining agricultural programs at schools, and graduates are finding niche areas of the field. "It's not just that broad acre farming with large operations," said Steeves. "We're starting to see indoor agriculture, the idea of produce and food creation for a growing population." Steeves recalled a school project a year ago when a student grew lettuce in their dorm room and was able to control different environments, moisture and light intensity remotely. "That idea of a student or an individual in a small, little dorm room with a growing operation the size of a mini-fridge is part of agriculture at this point in time," Steeves said, "and is now producing food that can be used and consumed by anyone on the planet." Innovation is key for aspiring farmers, said Craig Klemmer, principal economist at Farm Credit Canada. Starting small could be the first step. "With the changing face of the Canadian population, it's creating new opportunities for markets," he said. For instance, there's been a growing demand for sheep and goat meat, which can be started small and scaled up. Others are looking into more niche areas of the sector, he said — growing herbs or working in sustainable farming — which need fewer capital investments and resources to get operations going. "When you look at the opportunities, it's more on the smaller niche," Klemmer said. "Finding a new and creative solution, making some partnerships would be good ways to start." Nantais moved to Toronto last year to set up his own vertical farm business with an investment from his uncle but ran into a logistical issue: finding an appropriate rental space for the operation. He decided instead to partner with an existing vertical farm, Living Earth Farm, which grows sunflowers, peas, radishes, basil, cilantro and arugula, among other microgreens. He operates the farm as a partner and plans to be there for a while. "Hopefully, we can expand, increase our supply and start selling more of it." Exploring niche areas of farming comes at a time when the costs of farmland and farm machines have gone up exponentially over the years. The price of farmland in southern Ontario has gone up from an average of $2,616 per hectare in 1996 to approximately $23,100 per hectare in 2023, according to Farm Credit Canada's historical farmland values report. Other provinces have seen similar price jumps. "The reality, if we look at traditional crop production in Canada at large scale, they are very high barriers to entry," Klemmer said. "It would require quite a bit of capital to make those investments." That means not everyone is in a position to own a facility or run farmland, no matter the size. Steeves said many young graduates from the agricultural college are pivoting to areas such as crop science and working with larger producers to help them become more efficient. "A farmer isn't your classic picture, (a) person standing in the field, getting their hands dirty working with animals," Steeves said. Field work including drone assessments, pest management and soil testing are jobs increasingly finding a place among modern agriculture workers who want to be a part of the food system but can't own their own operations. "It's not so much operating and owning but doing more of the consulting for production," Steeves said. Resiliency can go a long way for a young farmer. Just like any other job, Steeves said, aspiring farmers need soft skills such as networking and the ability to move around for jobs. Despite rising interest in farming and a growing culture of grow-your-own-food, there remains a shortage in labour supply in the farming sector. As a large number of Canadian farmers head into retirement, fewer young people are stepping up to take on those roles. About 61 per cent of Canadian farm operators were 55 and older, according to a 2021 Statistics Canada report. Meanwhile, the number of farmers under 35 fell to 8.6 per cent as of 2021, compared with 11.5 per cent in 2001. "I think we still need more people," Steeves said. He said there's a place for everyone to be a part of agriculture — if not at the farmer or producer level — and still feel connected to the industry. "We're still trying to get rid of that myth that you have to come from this background in order to be involved," Steeves said.Retailers coax Black Friday shoppers into stores with big discounts and giveaways NEW YORK (AP) — Retailers in the U.S. have used giveaways and bigger-than expected discounts to reward shoppers who ventured out on Black Friday. The day after Thanksgiving still reigns for now as the unofficial kickoff of the holiday shopping season even if it’s lost some luster. Analysts reported seeing the biggest crowds at stores that offered real savings. They say many shoppers are being cautious with their discretionary spending despite the easing of inflation. Stores are even more under the gun to get shoppers in to buy early and in bulk since there are five fewer days between Thanksgiving and Christmas this year. Online sales figures from Thanksgiving Day gave retailers a reason to remain hopeful for a lucrative end to the year. Canada's Trudeau says he had an 'excellent conversation' with Trump in Florida after tariffs threat WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he had an “excellent conversation” with Donald Trump in Florida after the president-elect’s threat to impose significant tariffs on two of America’s leading trade partners raised alarms in Ottawa and Mexico City. It's unclear, as Trudeau headed back to Canada on Saturday, whether the conversation had alleviated Trump’s concerns. Trump’s transition team hasn't responded to questions about what the leaders had discussed at their dinner Friday night at Trump's Mar-a-Lago club. The Republican president-elect has threatened to impose tariffs on products from Canada and Mexico if the countries don’t stop what he said was the flow of drugs and migrants across their borders. Trump and Republicans in Congress eye an ambitious 100-day agenda, starting with tax cuts WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans swept to power on Election Day and now control the House, the Senate and the White House, with plans for an ambitious 100-day agenda come January. Their to-do list includes extending tax breaks, cutting social programs, building the border wall to stop immigration and rolling back President Joe Biden's green energy policies. Atop that list is a plan to renew some $4 trillion in expiring tax cuts that were a signature domestic achievement of Republican Donald Trump’s first term as president. It's an issue that may define his return to the White House. The ruble's in a slump. For the Kremlin, that's a two-edged sword Russia’s ruble is sagging against other currencies, complicating the Kremlin’s efforts to keep consumer inflation under control with one hand even as it overheats the economy with spending on the war against Ukraine with the other. Over time a weaker ruble could mean higher prices for imports from China, Russia's main trade partner these days. President Vladimir Putin says things are under control. One wild card is sanctions against a key Russian bank that have disrupted foreign trade payments. If Russia finds a workaround for that, the ruble could regain some of its recent losses. Why your favorite catalogs are smaller this holiday season PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — While retailers hope to go big this holiday season, customers may notice that the catalogs arriving in their mailboxes are smaller. Many of the millions of catalogs getting sent to U.S. homes were scaled down to save on postage and paper. Some gift purveyors are sending out postcards. In a sign of the times, the American Catalog Mailers Association rebranded itself in May as the American Commerce Marketing Association. Despite no longer carrying an extended inventory of goods, industry experts say catalogs help retailers cut through the noise and still hold their own in value because of growing digital advertising costs. Iceland votes for a new parliament after political disagreements force an early election REYKJAVIK, Iceland (AP) — Icelanders are electing a new parliament after disagreements over immigration, energy policy and the economy forced Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson to pull the plug on his coalition government and call early elections. This will be Iceland’s sixth general election since the 2008 financial crisis devastated the economy of the North Atlantic island nation and ushered in a new era of political instability. Opinion polls suggest the country may be in for another upheaval, with support for the three governing parties plunging. Benediktsson, who was named prime minister in April following the resignation of his predecessor, struggled to hold together the unlikely coalition of his conservative Independence Party with the centrist Progressive Party and the Left-Green Movement. Massachusetts lawmakers push for an effort to ban all tobacco sales over time BOSTON (AP) — A handful of Massachusetts lawmakers are hoping to persuade their colleagues to support a proposal that would make the state the first to adopt a ban meant to eliminate the use of tobacco products over time. Other locations have weighed similar “generational tobacco bans.” The bans phase out the use of tobacco products based not just on a person's age but on birth year. Lawmakers plan to file the proposal next year. If approved, the bill would set a date and ban the sale of tobacco to anyone born after that date forever, eventually banning all sales. Vietnam approves $67 billion high-speed railway project between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city HANOI, Vietnam (AP) — Vietnam has approved the construction of a high-speed railway connecting the capital Hanoi in the north with the financial capital of Ho Chi Minh in the south. It is expected to cost $67 billion and will stretch 1,541 kilometers (957 miles). The new train is expected to travel at speeds of up to 350 kph (217 mph), reducing the journey from the current 30 hours to just five hours. The decision was taken by Vietnam’s National Assembly on Saturday. Construction is expected to begin in 2027 and Vietnam hopes that the first trains will start operating by 2035. But the country has been beleaguered by delays to its previous infrastructure projects. Inflation rose to 2.3% in Europe. That won't stop the central bank from cutting interest rates FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Inflation in the 20 countries that use the euro currency rose in November — but that likely won’t stop the European Central Bank from cutting interest rates as the prospect of new U.S. tariffs from the incoming Trump administration adds to the gloom over weak growth. The European Union’s harmonized index of consumer prices rose 2.3 percent, up from 2.0% in October, according to EU statistics agency Eurostat. However, worries about growth mean the Dec. 12 ECB meeting is not about whether to cut rates, but by how much. Market buzz says there could be a larger than usual half-point cut in the benchmark rate, currently 3.25%. Stock market today: S&P 500 and Dow post gains and close out best month of 2024 NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks closed with solid gains as Wall Street put the finishing touches on one of its best months of the year. The S&P 500 rose 0.6% while the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 188 points, or 0.4%. The Nasdaq added 0.8%. Friday was an abbreviated trading day, with stocks closing at 1 p.m. ET and the bond market an hour later. Investors were looking to see how much shoppers are willing to spend on gifts for the holidays. Black Friday unofficially kicked off the holiday shopping season, although retailers had been offering early deals for weeks. Macy’s and Best Buy each gained around 2%.

By JOSH BOAK WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden said Tuesday he was “stupid” not to put his own name on pandemic relief checks in 2021, noting that Donald Trump had done so in 2020 and likely got credit for helping people out through this simple, effective act of branding. Biden did the second-guessing as he delivered a speech at the Brookings Institution defending his economic record and challenging Trump to preserve Democratic policy ideas when he returns to the White House next month. The president laid out favorable recent economic data but acknowledged his rare public regret that he had not been more self-promotional in advertising the financial support provided by his administration as the country emerged from the pandemic. “I signed the American Rescue Plan, the most significant economic recovery package in our history, and also learned something from Donald Trump,” Biden said at the Washington-based think tank. “He signed checks for people for 7,400 bucks ... and I didn’t. Stupid.” The decision by the former reality TV star and real estate developer to add his name to the checks sent by the U.S. Treasury to millions of Americans struggling during the coronavirus marked the first time a president’s name appeared on any IRS payments. Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris , who replaced him as the Democratic nominee , largely failed to convince the American public of the strength of the economy. The addition of 16 million jobs, funding for infrastructure, new factories and investments in renewable energy were not enough to overcome public exhaustion over inflation, which spiked in 2022 and left many households coping with elevated grocery, gasoline and housing costs. More than 6 in 10 voters in November’s election described the economy as “poor” or “not so good,” according to AP VoteCast, an extensive survey of the electorate. Trump won nearly 7 in 10 of the voters who felt the economy was in bad shape, paving the way for a second term as president after his 2020 loss to Biden. Biden used his speech to argue that Trump was inheriting a strong economy that is the envy of the world. The inflation rate fell without a recession that many economists had viewed as inevitable, while the unemployment rate is a healthy 4.2% and applications to start new businesses are at record levels. Biden called the numbers under his watch “a new set of benchmarks to measure against the next four years.” “President-elect Trump is receiving the strongest economy in modern history,” said Biden, who warned that Trump’s planned tax cuts could lead to massive deficits or deep spending cuts. He also said that Trump’s promise of broad tariffs on foreign imports would be a mistake, part of a broader push Tuesday by the administration to warn against Trump’s threatened action. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen also issued a word of caution about them at a summit of The Wall Street Journal’s CEO Council. “I think the imposition of broad based tariffs, at least of the type that have been discussed, almost all economists agree this would raise prices on American consumers,” she said. Biden was also critical of Trump allies who have pushed Project 2025 , a policy blueprint from the Heritage Foundation that calls for a complete overhaul of the federal government. Trump has disavowed participation in it, though parts were written by his allies and overlap with his stated views on economics, immigration, education policy and civil rights. “I pray to God the president-elect throws away Project 2025,” Biden said. “I think it would be an economic disaster.” Associated Press writer Fatima Hussein in Washington contributed to this report.

OTTAWA — The national chief of the Assembly of First Nations is calling on all members of Parliament to send a First Nations water bill to the Senate before the holiday break, saying the water crisis demands urgent action. “This legislation reflects years of advocacy by First Nations and marks a milestone in a decades-long fight for adequate water and wastewater in First Nations across Canada,” Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak wrote in an open letter to MPs. “We cannot afford further delays to this legislation or missed opportunities while First Nations continue to live without access to safe and clean water. Bill C-61 must advance now, not next year. We urge all members of Parliament, across all party lines, to act.” The government legislation known as Bill C-61 recognizes that First Nations have an inherent right to clean drinking water and commits the government to provide adequate and sustainable funding for water services in First Nations. The House of Commons has been gridlocked since late September because of an ongoing privilege debate that centres on a request for the Liberals to hand over to Parliament and the RCMP unredacted documents about misspending at a now-defunct green tech fund. That has taken precedence over nearly all other government business, and the water bill is awaiting a final vote in the House of Commons. Last week, Liberal MP Jaime Battiste, who is Mi’kmaq from Eskasoni First Nation, asked for unanimous consent from MPs to adopt the bill and send it to Senate. But several Conservative MPs said no. The Conservatives then introduced a unanimous consent motion of their own that also asked MPs to condemn the Liberals for their inaction on the file. That, too, was voted down. Chiefs who gathered with Battiste and Indigenous Services Minister Patty Hajdu last week expressed their disappointment with the bill not moving forward, and accused Conservative House leader Andrew Scheer of using the bill as a political tactic. “I’m very disappointed that he used clean drinking water as a tactic in this House in order to say, ‘If you do this, then we will do this,’ where there’s real lives that are being affected,” Cowessess First Nation Chief Erica Beaudin told reporters at a news conference. “We’re not talking about toys, we’re not talking about items that are not essential, but water is essential and you either believe in clean drinking water for everybody or you don’t. And if you do, you do everything you possibly can to work toward that happening.” There are 31 long-term boil water advisories on First Nations across the country, and 36 short-term advisories, government data shows. In a statement last week, Scheer said the Liberals shut down his motion because they would like to avoid “proper debate” on the legislation. “Liberal MPs should be outraged with themselves. They could properly debate this legislation today if they stopped their cover up of their $400 million green slush fund scandal by providing the documents to the RCMP as ordered by Parliament,” Scheer said. Since Bill C-61 was introduced nearly a year ago it has been subject to debate in the House of Commons, studied at committee and had amendments tacked on. At the Assembly of First Nations gathering last week, the AFN executive passed a resolution to continue advocating for the bill’s approval. Hajdu and Woodhouse Nepinak stood together in October making a similar push for the bill to move forward, with Hajdu blaming the Conservatives for delays. Scheer, in response, pointed back to that privilege debate and said the House can resume its work once the Liberals hand over the documents. It’s unclear whether the Liberals will attempt a unanimous consent motion again before the holidays. They are expected to introduce the fall economic statement on Monday, and the House of Commons is set to rise on Tuesday for a break that last until Jan. 27. In her letter to MPs, Woodhouse Nepinak said advancing the bill before then will demonstrate Canada’s commitment to upholding its responsibilities. “Support and prioritize the advancement of Bill C-61, refer it to the Senate, and take this necessary step toward ensuring every First Nation has access to the clean and safe drinking water, as it is their basic human right,” she said. Doctored images have been around for decades. The term "Photoshopped" is part of everyday language. But in recent years, it has seemingly been replaced by a new word: deepfake. It's almost everywhere online, but you likely won't find it in your dictionary at home. What exactly is a deepfake, and how does the technology work? RELATED STORY | Scripps News Reports: Sex, Lies, and Deepfakes A deepfake is an image or video that has been generated by artificial intelligence to look real. Most deepfakes use a type of AI called a "diffusion model." In a nutshell, a diffusion model creates content by stripping away noise. "With diffusion models, they found a very clever way of taking an image and then constructing that procedure to go from here to there," said Lucas Hansen said. He and Siddharth Hiregowdara are cofounders of CivAI, a nonprofit educating the public on the potential — and dangers — of AI. How diffusion models work It can get complicated, so imagine the AI – or diffusion model – as a detective trying to catch a suspect. Like a detective, it relies on its experience and training. It recalls a previous case -– a sneaky cat on the run. Every day it added more and more disguises. On Monday, no disguise. Tuesday, it put on a little wig. Wednesday, it added some jewelry. By Sunday, it's unrecognizable and wearing a cheeseburger mask. The detective learned these changes can tell you what it wore and on what day. AI diffusion models do something similar with noise, learning what something looks like at each step. "The job of the diffusion model is to remove noise," Hiregowdara said. "You would give the model this picture, and then it will give you a slightly de-noised version of this picture." RELATED STORY | Scripps News got deepfaked to see how AI could impact elections When it's time to solve the case and generate a suspect, we give it a clue: the prompts we give when we create an AI-generated image. "We have been given the hint that this is supposed to look like a cat. So what catlike things can we see in here? Okay, we see this curve, maybe that's an ear," Hiregowdara said. The "detective" works backward, recalling its training. It sees a noisy image. Thanks to the clue, it is looking for a suspect — a cat. It subtracts disguises (noise) until it finds the new suspect. Case closed. Now imagine the "detective" living and solving crimes for years and years. It learns and studies everything — landscapes, objects, animals, people, anything at all. So when it needs to generate a suspect or an image, it remembers its training and creates an image. Deepfakes and faceswaps Many deepfake images and videos employ some type of face swapping technology. You've probably experienced this kind of technology already — faceswapping filters like on Snapchat, Instagram or Tiktok use technology similar to diffusion models, recognizing faces and replacing things in real time. "It will find the face in the image and then cut that out kind of, then take the face and convert it to its internal representation," Hansen said. The results are refined then repeated frame by frame. The future and becoming our own detectives As deepfakes become more and more realistic and tougher to detect, understanding how the technology works at a basic level can help us prepare for any dangers or misuse. Deepfakes have already been used to spread election disinformation, create fake explicit images of a teenager, even frame a principal with AI-created racist audio. "All the netizens on social media also have a role to play," Siwei Lyu said. Lyu is a SUNY Empire Innovation Professor at the University of Buffalo's Department of Computer Science and Engineering, and the director of the Media Forensics Lab. His team has created a tool to help spot deepfakes called "DeepFake-o-meter." "We do not know how to handle, how to deal, with these kinds of problems. It's very new. And also requires technical knowledge to understand some of the subtleties there," Lyu said. "The media, the government, can play a very active role to improve user awareness and education. Especially for vulnerable groups like seniors, the kids, who will start to understand the social media world and start to become exposed to AI technologies. They can easily fall for AI magic or start using AI without knowing the limits." RELATED STORY | AI voice cloning: How programs are learning to pick up on pitch and tone Both Lyu and CivAI believe in exposure and education to help combat any potential misuse of deepfake technology. "Our overall goal is that we think AI is going t impact pretty much everyone in a lot of different ways," Hansen said. "And we think that everyone should be aware of the ways that it's going to change them because it's going to impact everyone." "More than just general education — just knowing the facts and having heard what's going to happen," he added. "We want to give people a really intuitive experience of what's going on." Hansen goes on to explain CivAI's role in educating the public. "We try and make all of our demonstrations personalized as much as possible. What we're working on is making it so people can see it themselves. So they know it's real, and they feel that it's real," Hansen said. "And they can have a deep gut level feel for tthe impact that it's going to have." "A big part of the solution is essentially just going to be education and sort of cultural changes," he added. "A lot of this synthetic content is sort of like a new virus that is attacking society right now, and people need to become immune to it in some ways. They need to be more suspicious about what's real and what's not, and I think that will help a lot as well."PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — A pair of conservative groups on Friday challenged a Maine law that limits donations to political action committees that spend independently in candidate elections, arguing that money spent to support political expression is “a vital feature of our democracy.” Supporters of the referendum overwhelmingly approved on Election Day fully expected a legal showdown over caps on individual contributions to so-called super PACs. They hoped the referendum would trigger a case and ultimately prompt the U.S. Supreme Court to clarify the matter of donor limits after the court opened the floodgates to independent spending in its 2010 Citizens United decision. The lawsuit brought by Dinner Table Action and For Our Future, and supported by the Institute for Free Speech, contends the state law limiting individual super PAC donations to $5,000 and requiring disclosure of donor names runs afoul of that Citizens United legal precedent. “All Americans, not just those running for office, have a fundamental First Amendment right to talk about political campaigns,” lawyers wrote in the lawsuit in federal court. “Their ‘independent expenditures,’ payments that fund political expression by those who are not running for office but nonetheless have something to say about a campaign, are a vital feature of our democracy.” RELATED COVERAGE Bone-chilling cold returns to the Midwest in the wake of a storm that soaked the East Coast Turning dusty attic treasures into cash can yield millions for some and disappointment for others US Biathlon officials ignored sexual harassment and abuse of female racers for decades, athletes say Cara McCormick, leader of the Maine Citizens to End Super PACs, which pressed for the referendum, said the lawsuit attempts to undermine the will of the people after an overwhelming majority — 74% of voters — approved the referendum last month. “Super PACs are killing the country and in Maine we decided to do something about it. We want to restore public trust in the political process,” she said. “We want to say that in Maine we are not resigned to the tide of big money. We are the tide.” But Alex Titcomb, executive director of Dinner Table Action, argued Friday that the government “cannot restrict independent political speech simply because some voters wish to limit the voices of their fellow citizens.” Named in the lawsuit are Maine’s attorney general and the state’s campaign spending watchdog, the Maine Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices. The ethics commission is reviewing the complaint, said Jonathan Wayne, executive director. The Maine referendum didn’t attempt to limit spending on behalf of candidates. Instead, it focused on limits on individual donations to super PACS, an area the Supreme Court has not ruled on, observers say. Harvard Law School professor Lawrence Lessig, a longtime advocate for campaign finance reform, contends the U.S. Supreme Court has not ruled on the issue of individual contributions to PACs, and long-established case law supports the notion that states can limit individual contributions to PACs despite a decision to the contrary by the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. Lessig, whose Equal Citizens nonprofit backed the Maine referendum, previously said the cap on donations imposed by the referendum “is not asking the Supreme Court to change its jurisprudence, not asking them to overturn Citizens United.”None

Suspect in killing of CEO struggles, shouts while entering courthouseWith the holidays taking up much of your time, you may not be concentrating on retirement moves to make before 2025. But if you’re the type of person who does everything to the max, investing in your future retirement now could be a game changer. In 2024, you can invest up to $23,000 into your 401(k) retirement plan as per IRS contribution limits. If you’re over 50 and need to play catch-up, you can invest an extra $7,500. That means your total possible contribution for 2024 is $30,500. If that seems like a lot, it is. But you don’t have to max out your contributions if you can’t afford it. Employer matching can help. In 2025, you can invest $23,500, bringing your possible contribution up to $31,500. If you’re over 50, the catch-up contribution remains at $7,500 for 2025. But a huge change was made in SECURE 2.0 for employees aged 60 to 63 who participate in workplace retirement plans. Starting in 2025, this super catch-up contribution limit is $11,250 instead of $7,500. Figure out how much you contributed. If you’ve contributed as much as possible for the year, you’re in good shape going into 2025. If you’re not sure, you changed jobs or haven’t contributed consistently in 2024, you still have time to make adjustments to max out your 401(k) contributions for the year. Check your employer’s match. Employer matching is a job benefit not to be overlooked. After all, for every dollar you save in your 401(k), your employer matches your contributions dollar-for-dollar or offers a partial match up to a certain percentage of your wages. Knowing where you stand can help you make the most of this opportunity. For example, let’s say you earn $50,000 per year and contribute $3,000 to your 401(k), or 6% of your salary. If your employer offers to match 50 cents of each dollar you contribute up to 6% of your pay, they would add $1,500 each year to your 401(k) account, boosting your total annual contributions to $4,500. Look at your budget. Maxing out your 401(k) is always a good move. However, retirement planning can be a balancing act; sometimes, your budget is downright against it. If you have high debt or no money set aside for emergencies, you may want to hold off a bit. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t contribute to your retirement plan at all. Maintaining contributions is important, even if it means not maxing it out. Still, if you wait too long to save, you’ll have to play catch-up. If you save too much, you may have to tap into your account early, which can mean early withdrawal penalties if you are under age 591⁄2. Boost your contributions. If you have enough cash stashed away to cover a large lump sum contribution to your 401(k), you could max out your 401(k) contributions before the end of the year. You can do this by increasing the percentage you contribute monthly from your paycheck. You’ll want to speak with your employer or HR department to see if this is possible and fill out the necessary paperwork. Keep in mind that how often you increase it or even if you can will depend on your plan rules. You may also want to check to be sure your contributions are still automatic. Since it’s usually easier to save money if it’s automatically deducted from your paycheck, it may be worth reviewing your budget to see if you can boost your contribution amount to max out your 401(k). If you haven’t set up automatic payroll contributions, now is a good time to do so. Maxing out your 401(k) has some clear benefits. This is especially true if you’ve fallen behind on your savings goals or you simply want to grow your retirement nest egg faster. The main advantage is that you’ll have more money saved for retirement. According to Northwestern Mutual’s 2024 Planning & Progress Study, most retired Americans believe they will need nearly $1.5 million in the bank to retire comfortably. That’s a 15% increase — which far outpaces the 3% to 5% inflation rate — over 2023 and is up 53% from 2020. The money you put into your 401(k) lowers how much you’ll pay in taxes for the year, which may put you in a lower tax bracket. Also, 401(k) investments grow tax-deferred, so you won’t pay taxes on the money until you withdraw the funds in retirement. If you have a Roth 401(k), you don’t get a tax break on contributions because you fund your account with after-tax dollars. But the money you contribute grows tax-free and you won’t pay any taxes on your withdrawals in retirement. Maxing out your 401(k) each year may not be enough to retire comfortably, but it is a great start. That’s why enlisting the help of a financial adviser in 2024 can help you get a head start on 2025 and a happy retirement down the road. Following a presentation of perspectives previously assessed by relevant authorities, the council approved adjustments to existing restrictions. The session; however, underscored the importance of regulated governance in cyberspace and the need to support domestic platforms. Sattar Hashemi, Minister of Information and Communications Technology, later commented on X, stating: "Today, we took the first step towards lifting internet restrictions with unity and collaboration. Several amazing deals just went live as part of the Best Buy Black Friday Sale (seriously, you should check them out), but one of the big highlights are the massive discounts on the most popular Windows-based gaming handheld PCs. They include all three Asus ROG Ally models (including the newest ROG Ally X ) and the Lenovo Legion Go . Currently no other retailer is offering the same discounts as Best Buy, although this might change (and we'll keep you updated if it does). Featured in this article All the deals below are listed above for your quick perusal. Just scroll horizonatally to see all the current deals on PC gaming handhelds, power banks we recommend, and a MicroSD card for extra storage. Lenovo Legion Go Lenovo is teasing Black Friday with not one, but two excellent deals on the Lenovo Legion Go gaming handheld. The 1TB model is down to $549.99 (originally $750) and the 512GB model is $499.99 (originally $700). This was our pick for best Windows-based gaming handheld before the ROG Ally X came along. Even so, at a price that's $150-$200 less, this handheld is a very convincing purchase. The Legion Go shares similar specs as the Asus ROG Ally Z1 Extreme model, but with a bigger and sharper display, detachable controllers, and a larger battery. Asus ROG Ally X Best Buy drops $100 off the recently released Asus ROG Ally X, bringing the price down to $699.99. In our Asus ROG Ally X review , gaming guru Jacqueline Thomas wrote that "the Asus ROG Ally X is simply the best handheld gaming PC on the market right now. With more and faster memory and double the battery as the original Ally, the Ally X will run any modern game without dying in an hour and a half." The Asus ROG Ally X improves on the original ROG Ally in several ways, the biggest upgrades being a much bigger 80Whr battery with nearly the runtime, more RAM, a beefier cooling system, double the storage capacity on the base model, and better controls. It's not inexpensive starting at $799.99, but it's definitely an incredible piece of hardware. Asus ROG Ally Best Buy is taking up to $200 off ASUS ROG Ally models. The more powerful AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme edition is priced at $499.99, however My Best Buy Plus members get an extra $50 off. If you don't have the paid membership, I'd suggest you wait until Black Friday proper begins. This deal should be available to the general public at that time. The AMD Ryzen Z1 (non-Extreme) edition is down to $349.99, which is easily the best price we've seen and the cheapest cost of entry to the world of PC gaming handhelds. Is This a Better Choice For You Than the Steam Deck? We wrote up a guide comparing the pros and cons of an Asus ROG Ally versus a Steam Deck . The Steam Deck is an easier handheld to use for anyone who doesn't like to tinker and just wants everything to work right out of the box. The SteamOS interface is simple and intuitive. The ROG Ally and Legion Go have all the advantages and disadvantages of the Windows operating system. You'll get to run games that run on clients apart from Steam (like Mihoyo games, Battle.net, Origin, Xbox Game Pass, and more), and you'll benefit from more powerful hardware, but you'll need to deal with compatibility issues. Must-Have Accessories for Any PC Gaming Handheld Owner If you end up getting a gaming handheld PC, we'd definitely recommend picking up a portable power bank for extended travels and a Micro SD card if you think you'll be running out of space even with the 1TB of storage. Fortunately, there are already a few options that are discounted for Black Friday. Anker 737 24,000mAh 140W Power Bank As part of the Amazon Black Friday Sale , you can pick up the Anker PowerCore 737 24,000mAh 140W Power Bank at the best price I've ever seen . Right now, the price is down to $79.99 after a nearly 50% off discount. This is one of the best Steam Deck and Asus ROG Ally X chargers you can get. I've actually owned this power bank for over a year now for ROG Ally and my kids' Switches; it has been on multiple flights and road trips and is still lasting strong. Anker Prime 20,000mAh 200W Power Bank Amazon is also offering the Anker Prime 20,000mAh USB Power Bank for only $77.99 after you clip the 40% off coupon on the product page. This is the best price we've seen for 2024 (the previous lowest price was $89.99 on Amazon Prime Day). The actual date of Black Friday in 2024 falls on November 29 this year, but the deals season began a lot sooner than that. Leading up to the big event, retailers have begun to open deals online. (This usually starts in the last week of October, just before Halloween.) Each week leading up to the event will slowly roll out more deals, which ultimately leads to massive discounts on Black Friday. Retailers will not reveal their biggest Black Friday deals until the big day, but most general deals will be available well in advance. Victoria Mary Clarke’s heartbreaking tribute to Shane MacGowan on anniversarySarnia stands at a pivotal moment in its development, facing challenges that include housing affordability, homelessness, and the growth strain of encampments. As Draft 2 of the proposed zoning by-law is under review—the first major update in decades—its implications for the city’s growth, economy, and housing landscape warrant careful attention. Central to the discussion is the concept of infill development and how zoning policies can either unlock its potential or create unnecessary roadblocks. Here’s why the new by-laws matter and what’s at stake for Sarnia. Sarnia currently ranks 95th out of 100 in housing starts—a stark indicator of how far we need to go to meet the demand for housing. When housing supply is limited, landlords hold significant power, often leading to higher rents and lower housing quality. Scarce supply also drives predatory practices like “renovictions,” where tenants are displaced under the guise of renovations only to see rents increase beyond affordability. On the other hand, an abundance of housing naturally balances this power dynamic. With more options, tenants gain leverage, and landlords are incentivized to maintain and improve their properties to attract and retain residents. Simply put, when housing options are plentiful, everyone benefits. Infill development—the process of building within existing neighbourhoods—offers an efficient, sustainable solution to housing shortages. By utilizing existing infrastructure and increasing population density, infill development can reduce urban sprawl and foster activities that enhance community vibrancy, such as improved access to local businesses and greater opportunities for social interaction. Current zoning regulations in Sarnia introduce complexities for infill projects. While the new Official Plan outlines a vision for progress, some aspects of the draft zoning by-laws include requirements that may pose challenges for development: These restrictions create obstacles to the gradual, incremental growth that’s essential for Sarnia to adapt and thrive. Incremental development—allowing neighbourhoods to grow by small steps, like converting a single-family home into a duplex or adding a granny flat—is a proven method for creating diverse, affordable housing options without disrupting community character. This approach offers several benefits: Zoning policies that enable Missing Middle Housing could have several economic implications for Sarnia: Without significant updates to the zoning by-law, Sarnia risks stifling growth and innovation. The current framework prioritizes single-family homes and restricts the types of housing that meet the needs of a changing population. This “business as usual” approach exacerbates housing shortages and leaves families, seniors, and young professionals with few affordable options. Meanwhile, cities that embrace flexible zoning policies are seeing significant benefits, from revitalized neighbourhoods to thriving local economies. Sarnia must act now to stay competitive and meet its residents’ needs. To address potential challenges in the proposed zoning by-laws, the following changes could be considered: Although the deadline for submitting written comments has passed, residents can still participate in discussions about the proposed zoning by-laws:CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Kendall Bostic scored a career-high 31 points, Makira Cook scored 20 and No. 22 Illinois rolled to an 85-66 victory over Oregon State on Friday night. Bostic buried 15 of 18 shots from the floor and her only free throw for the Illini (5-0), who finished off a five-game homestand to begin the season. She added eight rebounds. Cook sank 8 of 13 shots with two 3-pointers and handed out eight assists. It was the 33rd time in her career she has scored at least 20 points. Genesis Bryant pitched in with 12 points and four assists for Illinois. AJ Marotte totaled 16 points to pace the Beavers (1-4), who have lost three in a row after reaching the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament last season. Catarina Ferreira finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds. The senior has two career double-doubles with both coming in back-to-back games. Cook made 3s and scored eight to help Illinois take a 21-13 lead after one quarter. Oregon State hung close in the second period behind eight points from Catarina Ferreira and trailed 40-30 at halftime. Illinois shot 54.7% from the floor and held the Beavers to 39.4%. The Illini missed 15 of 20 from beyond the arc but made 10 of 12 at the free-throw line. Oregon State was 7 for 29 from distance and 7 for 9 at the foul line. Illinois heads to Nashville, Tenn., on Tuesday to play Maryland-Eastern Shore in the Music City Classic. Oregon State heads to Nassau, Bahamas, for the Baha Mar Women's Championship and will open against No. 2 Connecticut on Monday.

While the proposal has garnered support from various stakeholders, there are also concerns about the potential implications of this policy change. Some experts worry that the exemption of the land value added tax may lead to speculative behavior in the real estate market, driving up housing prices and creating housing bubbles. It will be crucial for the government to closely monitor market dynamics and implement additional measures to prevent any adverse effects on housing affordability and market stability.Title: Arsenal's Emirates Stadium: A Glorious Past and Promising Future

Social Development Minister, Australian Ambassador Discuss Efforts To Empower Women

NoneOttawa Community Housing has officially launched a free community Wi-Fi pilot called CommuniFi. The project, managed by Capital FreeNet, will launch in buildings at 251 and 255 Donald Street in Ottawa’s Vanier neighbourhood. The free networks will be available in the buildings’ common areas. Ottawa Community Housing hopes this project will transform the common areas into a hub for learning, support, and social engagement. The network will also be applicable to workshops, social activities, community events, and programs within the common areas. The network will allow community partners to use the free Wi-Fi to deliver events, workshops, and programs and provide tenants with access to resources and opportunities within the building. According to Ottawa Community Housing, this project is designed to provide low-income households with free internet so they can access resources such as education, employment, healthcare, and communication with friends and family without paying high telecommunication costs. Among Canada’s three big telecommunication companies, a basic home internet package can start anywhere from $60 to $85 per month in Ontario. Rogers charges $60/mo for its 5G-based home internet or $75/mo for its ‘Starter’ wireline package, but that plan goes up to $90/mo after two years. Telus charges $79/mo for its newly launched PureFibre internet in Ontario, but that includes a $30/mo discount for two years and another $21/mo discount for bundling with a Telus mobile plan – the regular price is $130. Similarly, Bell’s $60/mo starting package rises to $85 monthly after two years. However, it’s also worth noting that Rogers and Telus offer internet plans for low-income people through their respective Connected for Success and Internet for Good programs. Telus’ program is currently only available in Alberta and B.C. These programs require that people meet specific criteria and to submit applications in order to access the lower rates. To put those costs in perspective, Canada’s Unemployment Insurance has a maximum payout of $668 a week, the Canada Pension Plan has a disability amount of $583.52 at minimum, and Ontario has a $17.20 per hour minimum wage, which rose from $16.55 on October 1st. National Capital FreeNet will also provide free workshops from their HelpDesk service to help tenants use and understand the network to avoid confusion. Ottawa Community Housing will enable National Capital FreeNet to expand the project to 10 other community organizations next year. National Capital FreeNet partnered with HiBoo Network to assist with the project and received funding and technical support from the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA). LDF performed well in bypolls despite Cong's 'false campaign', says Pinarayi VijayanWASHINGTON (AP) — In the two weeks since Donald Trump won the presidency, he's tried to demonstrate his dominance by naming loyalists for top administration positions, even though many lack expertise and some face sexual misconduct accusations. It often seems like he's daring Congress to oppose his decisions. But on Thursday, Trump's attempt to act with impunity showed a crack as Matt Gaetz , his choice for attorney general, withdrew from consideration. Trump had named Gaetz, a Florida congressman, to be the country's top law enforcement official even though he was widely disliked by his colleagues, has little legal experience and was accused of having sex with an underage girl, an allegation he denied. After being plagued by investigations during his first presidency, Trump wanted a devoted ally in charge of the Justice Department during his second. However, it was never obvious that Gaetz could win enough support from lawmakers to get confirmed as attorney general. Trump chose for a replacement Pam Bondi, a former Florida attorney general who defended him during his first impeachment trial and supported his false claims of voter fraud. Now the question is whether Gaetz was uniquely unpalatable, or if Trump's other picks might exceed his party's willingness to overlook concerns that would have sunk nominees in a prior political era. The next test will likely be Pete Hegseth, who Trump wants to lead the Pentagon despite an allegation of sexual assault that he's denied. So far, Republicans are rallying around Hegseth , an Army veteran and former Fox News host. Sen. Thom Tillis, a North Carolina Republican who serves on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said the controversy over Gaetz would have little bearing on Trump’s other choices. He said they would be considered “one at a time.” Sen. Richard Blumenthal, a Connecticut Democrat, suggested otherwise, claiming “the dominoes are falling.” “The drip drip of evidence and truth is going to eventually doom some others,” he said. Trump's election victory was a sign that there may not be many red lines left in American politics. He won the presidential race despite authoritarian, racist and misogynist rhetoric, not to mention years of lies about election fraud and his role in sparking the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. He was also criminally convicted of falsifying business records to pay hush money, and he was found liable for sexual abuse in a civil case. Empowered by voters who looked past his misconduct and saw him as a powerful agent of change, Trump has shown no deference to Washington norms while working to fill his second administration . The transition team hasn't pursued federal background checks for Trump's personnel choices. While some of his selections have extensive experience in the areas they've been chosen to lead, others are personal friends and Fox News personalities who have impressed and flattered Trump over the years. Several have faced allegations involving sexual misconduct . Hegseth is facing the most scrutiny after Gaetz. Once Trump announced Hegseth as his nominee for Pentagon chief, allegations emerged that he sexually assaulted a woman in California in 2017. The woman said he took her phone, blocked the door to the hotel room and refused to let her leave, according to a police report made public this week. Hegseth told police at the time that the encounter had been consensual and denied any wrongdoing, the report said. However, he paid the woman a confidential settlement in 2023. Hegseth's lawyer said the payment was made to head off the threat of a baseless lawsuit. Trump’s choice for secretary of health and human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has faced allegations of misconduct too. A woman who babysat for him and his second wife told Vanity Fair magazine that Kennedy groped her in the late 1990s, when she was 23. Kennedy did not deny the allegation and texted an apology to the woman after the article was published. That isn't the only hurdle for Kennedy; he's spent years spreading misinformation and conspiracy theories about vaccines, raising fears about making him a top health official in the new administration. Linda McMahon, chosen by Trump to be education secretary, is fighting a lawsuit connected to her former company, World Wrestling Entertainment. She’s accused of knowingly enabling sexual exploitation of children by an employee as early as the 1980s, and she denies the allegations. Tulsi Gabbard is another person who could face a difficult confirmation battle, but for very different reasons. The former Democratic representative from Hawaii has been a vocal Trump ally, and he chose her to be national intelligence director. But there's grave concern by lawmakers and national security officials over Gabbard’s history of echoing Russian propaganda. Critics said she would endanger relationships with U.S. allies. Gaetz was investigated by federal law enforcement for sex trafficking, but the case was closed without charges and Republicans have blocked the release of a related report from the House Ethics Committee. However, some allegations leaked out, including that Gaetz paid women for sex. One of the women testified to the committee that she saw Gaetz having sex with a 17-year-old girl, according to a lawyer for the woman. As Gaetz met with senators this week, it became clear that he would face stubborn resistance from lawmakers who were concerned about his behavior and believed he was unqualified to run the Justice Department. “While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction,” Gaetz wrote on social media when announcing his withdrawal. Sen. Mike Braun, an Indiana Republican, said he believed there were four to six members of the caucus who would have voted against Gaetz, likely dooming his nomination, and “the math got too hard.” He said some of the issues and allegations around Gaetz were “maybe beyond the pale." “I think there were just too many things, it was like a leaky dike, and you know, it broke," Braun said. Trump thanked Gaetz in a post on Truth Social, his social media website, without addressing the substance of the allegations against him. “He was doing very well but, at the same time, did not want to be a distraction for the Administration, for which he has much respect,” Trump wrote. Associated Press writers Mary Clare Jalonick, Stephen Groves and Lisa Macaro contributed from Washington. Jill Colvin in New York and Adriana Gomez Licon in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, also contributed.

Both Baileys Eclairs and Baileys Indulgent Biscuits have been spotted on the shelves this Christmas. Aldi and Home Bargains have stocked up the creamy confectionaries and eagle-eyed shoppers were delighted to find them in Iceland as well. A lot of people adored the creamy-flavoured find, and were gushing in the comment section of the Iceland website. One wrote: "Wow absolutely delicious. "You can taste the Baileys in the very generous cream, will definitely buy again." Another added: "Very nice, lots of Baileys in a small eclair." A third user commented: "Delicious, just the right amount of Baileys cream." However not everyone was impressed. One user posted: "Pleased I didn't pay full price for them. "I wont be buying any for myself for Christmas and will have to decide whether I still give them as gifts or give them to the local church for Christmas raffle - maybe with a very sweet warning attached." Another complained: "Smaller than expected, and with a weird aftertaste. "They don't taste like proper Baileys, more like a cheap imitation." Despite the mixed reviews, shoppers are still keen to give the new Baileys collection a try. The Baileys Indulgent Biscuits are described as buttery but still with a hint of liqueur, and not too overpowering. As the the Baileys Milk Chocolate Creams, they consist a balance of a creamy whisky filling covered in milk chocolate. The mini eclairs have a creamy Baileys flavoured filling in a light pastry, covered with a smooth chocolate coating. These are frozen in a pack of 12 and instructions suggest defrosting them for 30 minutes before tucking in. If you're a sucker for that creamy Irish whiskey liqueur, then there are some sneaky hacks that can save you on splashing out on Baileys this festive season. If you want to save your money for presents, you can always go for a Baileys dupe, which have been described as "almost perfect." If you're prepared to let go of the litre bottle you can purchase the 70cl Ballycastle cream liqueur for £5.79 - just 82p per 100ml. Shoppers have described the product as "lush" and "gorgeous" on Facebook. The Ballycastle product also comes in various flavours, such as the newest addition, which is a luscious Milk Chocolate Clementine version for £7.49. If you fancy giving something new a try, this could save you up to a whopping £16.21 on one bottle of Baileys. For the price of one Baileys bottle from Morrisons or Asda, £22.00, you could nearly buy four bottles of the Ballycastle. However, keep in mind that the ABV of Bailey's is 16 per cent, the Ballycastle booze is 12 per cent. Other supermarkets which offer up their own Baileys dupes include Sainsbury's, Tesco, Morrison's, Asda, Lidl and M&S. Consumer reporter Sam Walker reveals how you can save money on your Christmas shopping Limit the amount of presents - buying presents for all your family and friends can cost a bomb. Instead, why not organise a Secret Santa between your inner circles so you're not having to buy multiple presents. Plan ahead - if you've got the stamina and budget, it's worth buying your Christmas presents for the following year in the January sales. Make sure you shop around for the best deals by using price comparison sites so you're not forking out more than you should though. Buy in Boxing Day sales - some retailers start their main Christmas sales early so you can actually snap up a bargain before December 25. Delivery may cost you a bit more, but it can be worth it if the savings are decent. Shop via outlet stores - you can save loads of money shopping via outlet stores like Amazon Warehouse or Office Offcuts. They work by selling returned or slightly damaged products at a discounted rate, but usually any wear and tear is minor
