‘World at dawn of third nuclear age’, armed forces chief warnsThere’s no playbook for what Dakota Joshua has endured. You can point to Xs and Os positioning to help guide the imposing yet struggling Vancouver Canucks ’ left winger following testicular cancer surgery in early September. However, the tremendous mental and physical anguish, plus loss of preparation time and games to build on a career season and contract extension, tested his mettle to find peace with it all. “Until you’re in that position, you can’t really describe (it) and it’s obviously scary no matter what age,” Joshua told reporters on Nov. 1. “But ... I’m just very thankful and happy to be standing here in front of you guys today. It was hard to go through, but thankful for how it’s turned out so far.” It was important to find moments of reflection and laughter in the locker-room. Once the 28-year-old Joshua donned a non-contact jersey on his road to recovery, it said everything about a forward focus. And in a brief exchange with this reporter that focused on his beloved first-place Detroit Lions, the Dearborn, Mich., native lit up like a Christmas tree. Joshua, who looks like he would be a good NFL tight end, had a thought when asked about that possible career trajectory. “You’re not getting enough time with the practice-to-playing ratio,” he said. “That was always my view. And to mix it in with hockey practice would be a lot. “I played hockey and basketball (power forward) until Grade 10 and probably thought I was better than I actually was at the time. “I think I chose the right sport.” Joshua also chose to speak passionately about how his Lions could bolster their roster following the loss of edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson to a broken leg in Week 6. Joshua said Detroit should pursue Maxx Crosby of the Las Vegas Raiders to fill the void before the Nov. 5 trade deadline. And despite rumours, the Raiders stood pat, and the next-man-up Lions kept winning. The Lions are 12-1-0 and have clinched a playoff berth. Meanwhile, the Canucks are 4-6-3 on home ice and looking for consistency answers throughout their lineup. One needed improvement is the presence of Joshua on a second line with Pius Suter and Conor Garland . Joshua, Garland and Teddy Blueger meshed so well last season that they were labelled the ‘Meat and Potatoes Line’. Joshua was the meat, Blueger the potato and Garland the gravy. Fast-forward and Joshua has understandably been tentative in pursuit of the opposition on the forecheck, and by not playing on instinct, he has invited a penchant for penalties. He returned on Nov. 14 and has two assists and 13 penalty minutes through a dozen games. He has thrown 44 hits and blocked seven shots, so those parts of his game are coming around. But others need to as well. “I think he’s still trying to get his legs,” said Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet , who helped Joshua evolve from project into a versatile winger, who has also killed penalties. “He’s frustrated. He doesn’t feel they’re there yet. Sometimes, you can get away with that by thinking quicker and anticipating where the puck goes more and play more predictable. “I’d rather have him overshoot a look than waiting to see if it (puck) goes to option A, B or C. And it looks like he’s playing slow. That (predictability) is the way to get out of it. Once you water-ski, and put your stick on a guy, the refs are going to call it (penalty).” Joshua had 18 goals and 32 points in 63 games last season with a willingness to get to the net and show off some soft hands. That hasn’t been there yet. He also led the club in 2023-24 in regular-season hits (244) — ranking ninth overall in the NHL — and also paced the Canucks in the post-season (74). Joshua was also a key cog in a vastly improved penalty kill that had a 79.1 per cent efficiency in the regular season and 81 per cent in the post-season. And most importantly, he measured up in the playoffs with eight points (4-4) in 13 games to earn a four-year contract extension at US$3.25 million in annual average value. What will help get Joshua back to where he needs to be is a strong support system. He formed a bond with Garland and they connected on-and-off the ice and their conversations are often punctuated by laugher. The cancer diagnosis only brought them closer. “He’s a personality that we enjoy having in the room,” said Garland. “A fantastic guy. A fantastic player. It takes time to jump into a regular season. “I don’t think a lot of people have ever gone through that (cancer surgery) and especially when you’re trying to be a professional athlete and be at your best. “It’s a different situation. He’s going to have a good year, but timing and getting in shape will take time. Nobody is expecting him to look like he did in the playoffs, at least for a little bit.” bkuzma@postmedia.com

But now a report said that Apple's first foldable iPhone can be introduced in the second half of 2026. According to the DSCC report, Apple's first foldable iPhone will be book-style, meaning you can open or close the display like a book. Earlier, it was said that Apple would introduce a flip-style foldable iPhone, but according to this report, its design will be different. This foldable iPhone will be large because the company believes that consumers prefer foldable phones with large displays. According to the report, the first foldable iPhone could be 7.9 to 8.3 inches larger. The report further stated that this foldable iPhone will be equipped with a flexible OLED display and will not be damaged even by opening and closing thousands of times. It will have a new powerful processor inside, while the camera system will also be excellent. Apple's entry into foldable smartphones is also likely to increase the sales of these devices. The demand for foldable phones had slightly declined during 2023 and 2024, but Apple's arrival may give new life to this market. It is pertinent to note that Apple is not in a hurry to adopt any new technology and waits for it to improve. Foldable phones are currently being developed, but many problems are emerging in them.

Read unlimited articles for free today: Already have an account? LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — Jaylon Johnson wasn’t all that interested in discussing any bright spots or reasons to have hope for the Chicago Bears. The star cornerback made his feelings clear. “I’ve been in slumps four, five years in a row now,” Johnson said Monday. “So, I mean at the end of the day, I don’t look for, ‘OK, what is going to be better in the future?’ ... It will be better when it’s better. So, right now, it’s not better. That’s all I can go off of.” The Bears (4-7) are last in the NFC North and have five straight losses after falling 30-27 to Minnesota in overtime. They wiped out an 11-point deficit in the final 22 seconds of regulation, only to come up short again when the Vikings’ Parker Romo kicked a 29-yard field goal. It was the third game during this skid that came down to the final play. The Bears also lost on a Hail Mary at Washington in Week 8 and had a game-ending field goal attempt by Cairo Santos blocked by Green Bay in Week 11. Players have openly questioned some of the coaching decisions in recent weeks. Offensive coordinator Shane Waldron got fired before the game against Green Bay. And coach Matt Eberflus’ game management came under more scrutiny against Minnesota. With the Bears trailing 17-10 in the third quarter, there was some confusion on a fourth-and-4 at the Vikings 27. Eberflus said he didn’t do a good enough job communicating on the previous play that they would go for it on fourth down. That led to a chaotic sequence in which Santos and long snapper Scott Daly ran onto the field, only to get waved off by a lineman. Quarterback Caleb Williams had to rush to get everyone lined up properly in order to avoid a delay of game. He wound up barking out the wrong play because he misheard the call from offensive coordinator Thomas Brown and threw an incomplete pass. Receiver DJ Moore said Eberflus had not addressed that play with the team. The Bears were scheduled to meet later Monday. “That moment was just like, like a ‘what is going on’ moment that we could have avoided,” he said. What’s working The passing game. Williams has clearly looked more comfortable in the two games since Brown replaced the fired Shane Waldron as offensive coordinator. The No. 1 draft pick followed up a solid performance against Green Bay by throwing for 340 yards and two touchdowns. It was his fourth straight turnover-free game and fifth in a row without an interception. What needs help Field goal protection. One week after his game-ending 46-yard field goal attempt against Green Bay got blocked, Santos had a 48-yarder rejected on his first try against Minnesota. It happened from the same area, in the middle of the line, when the Vikings’ Jerry Tillery knocked down the kick. “I just think it’s technique,” Eberflus said. “It’s getting your foot down, bracing up there, staying lower. ... We just have to do a better job there with that.” It was the third blocked field goal for Santos this year, the most for Chicago in a single season since it also had three blocked in 2012. He had a 43-yard try blocked in a win over Jacksonville on Oct. 13. Stock up Moore. The Bears have done a better job getting Moore involved under Brown. Moore caught seven passes for a season-high 106 yards and a touchdown against Minnesota. That gave him 14 receptions for 168 yards the past two games, compared to 13 for 104 yards over the previous four. Johnson’s 27-yard catch down the middle set up Santos’ tying field goal at the end of regulation. But it’s not just deep shots. The Bears are finding ways to get the ball in his hands, allowing him to turn short passes into bigger gains. He also had a 13-yard run. Stock down RB D’Andre Swift. After a string of solid outings, Swift had just 30 yards on 13 carries. To be fair, he has been dealing with a groin issue, and he was going against the NFL’s No. 1 run defense. Injuries The Bears reported no injuries during the game. Key number Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. 5-18 — The Bears’ record in one-possession games in nearly three seasons under Eberflus, including a 2-5 mark this year. They are 14-31 overall during Eberflus’ tenure. Next steps The schedule doesn’t get any easier, with a Thanksgiving matchup at NFC North leader Detroit. Daniel Jones is free to sign with any NFL team after clearing waivers on Monday, which also means the team that signs the former New York Giants quarterback won't be on the hook for the nearly $12 million that was remaining on his contract this year or his $23 million injury guarantee. Jones was released at his request by the Giants on Saturday after the former first-round pick was benched last week. He reportedly wants to join a contender, and there are expected to be multiple teams interested. The two teams reported to have the most initial interest in Jones are also being offered as the most likely to sign him by one sportsbook. The Baltimore Ravens currently have journeyman backup Josh Johnson behind starting quarterback Lamar Jackson. Jones would potentially provide a third option, and one whose mobility could make him an intriguing fit in offensive coordinator Todd Monken's system The Ravens were installed as the 2/1 favorites to land Jones ahead of the Minnesota Vikings (5/2), who have veterans Nick Mullens and Brett Rypien behind starter Sam Darnold. They would likely view Jones as an upgrade. "I really can't get into too much about any short-term or long-term," Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell said Monday when asked about Jones, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. "I can just say that I've been a big fan of Daniel's for a long time and I hope wherever his next step takes him, it's a good opportunity for him." The Las Vegas Raiders (5/1) don't fall into the category of contenders after falling to 2-9 amid a seven-game losing streak. However, they could provide the most immediate opportunity to play with Gardner Minshew suffering a season-ending broken collarbone on Sunday that is expected to end his season. Second-year quarterback Aidan O'Connell is close to returning from a thumb injury, but coach Antonio Pierce acknowledged after Sunday's game that, "We're going to need somebody, right?" If O'Connell isn't ready to face the Kansas City Chiefs on Black Friday, Desmond Ridder is expected to get the start. The Dallas Cowboys (7/1) would fall into a similar category, with Dak Prescott out for the season following hamstring surgery and being replaced by Cooper Rush. Another intriguing possibility lies with Detroit, where the 10-1 Lions' offense is rolling with Jared Goff at the helm. However, should he go down to injury the only other quarterback on the roster is rookie Hendon Hooker. That has contributed to the Lions having 7/1 odds to sign Jones. Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce was the in his Leawood, Kansas home on Oct. 7, just hours before their game against the New Orleans Saints. The All-Pro tight end reportedly lost an assortment of valuable items, which included his Super Bowl jersey from the Chiefs' first trip to the championship game back in 2019 when they defeated the San Francisco 49ers, 31-20, at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida. Kelce has since to beef up his security and ensure that another break-in does not happen again. At the same time, however, there have been no reports indicating that the nine-time Pro Bowler has recovered the priceless memorabilia he lost during the robbery. This brings the number of legally protected Indigenous areas to 13 since the start of his current term in early 2023. This latest recognition includes the Potiguara de Monte-Mor land in Paraiba and two territories in Santa Catarina. The move aims to protect these areas from encroachment by illegal loggers, gold miners, and cattle ranchers. Despite the recognition of new regions, Lula acknowledged delays in Northeast Alagoas, with discussions scheduled to resolve issues. The president remains committed to legalizing as many Indigenous reservations as possible, in his third non-consecutive term. (With inputs from agencies.)
OTTAWA — Canada’s public safety minister says he has discussed the idea of allowing Canada Border Services Agency to patrol between points of entry, but it is not a priority for Ottawa as it looks for more urgent ways to bolster border security. Dominic LeBlanc joined Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on a trip last Friday to Palm Beach, Fla., to see president-elect Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate, where they dined with other incoming White House cabinet nominees. The unannounced trip had been arranged earlier in the week when the leaders spoke by phone after Trump threatened to slap a 25 per cent tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada over concerns about illegal immigration and the flow of fentanyl into the U.S., when he takes office in January. Since Trump’s threat, LeBlanc has sought to reassure Canadians and his American counterparts that it takes border security seriously, pledging in the wake of the threat to send additional police drones and helicopters to the RCMP, as well as having personnel redeployed. Mark Weber, the national president of the c ustoms and immigration union representing border services officers, said Ottawa should give the agency the power to patrol the entire border, not just official entry points. He called on the Liberals to repeal an order dating back to 1932, which made the Mounties responsible for border security between entry points, which Weber said is clearly “outdated.” “The situation is so silly now that if our officers are sitting at one of their workplaces and they see someone crossing just off to where the port is, we have to call the RCMP.” “It’s frustrating for members.” With a nearly 9,000-kilometre border, Weber said he does not want to replace the RCMP, but for its members to be able to assist. “It seems like an obvious part of this solution to the problem.” Speaking to reporters on Monday, LeBlanc said the federal Liberals have “taken note” of the idea. “I’ve discussed that with the commissioner of the RCMP,” the minister said, adding no decision has been made. LeBlanc defended the job done by the RCMP when it comes to border security, saying as a national police force it has the necessary access to criminal intelligence and has long-established relationships with other policing organizations, such as the FBI. “If we were to undertake a big machinery (of) government change, that may require legislation in the room behind me,” LeBlanc said, referring to the House of Commons. “I’m not sure it would speak to the urgency of the matter.” The government “is always looking at good ideas and we’re not dismissing this one,” LeBlanc said, “but it’s not a priority for us in terms of arriving at the conclusion we want.” The minister declined to provide specifics around the plans to deploy additional technologies, saying that he spoke to both RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme and Canada Border Services Agency President Erin O’Gorman earlier in the day about the matter. Exactly where the equipment and personnel will be deployed are matters of police operations, LeBlanc said. Weber added the border services agency still faces a staffing shortage, saying it has not recovered from the 1,200 jobs that were cut under the former Conservative government. In a statement on Monday, a spokesman for the agency reiterated that border security is a responsibility it shares with the RCMP. The national force did not respond to a request for comment by press time. Kelly Sundberg, a criminologist and former border services officer who now teaches at Mount Royal University, said the fact that successive governments have kept such an “antiquated” order in place reflects the “neglect” Ottawa has shown to border issues. “We just haven’t taken it seriously.” “The RCMP is understaffed already,” Sundberg added. “Buying a bunch of helicopters to patrol a 9,000-kilometre border is nothing short of ridiculous. It’s just performative security theatre.” Sundberg believes the country needs to transform the border services agency into a “true policing agency.” Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has called on the federal Liberals to present a plan to Parliament for how it plans to address border security. Besides increasing patrols and ensuring collaboration with local police, he said Trudeau should expand the mandate of the border service’s agency. Both federal officials and the RCMP have said they are ready for a potential influx of people who may try entering Canada illegally, in light of president-elect Trump’s vow to deport millions of people from the U.S. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada is preparing to roll out an updated version of an advertising campaign it has been running since 2018, laying out the facts about claiming asylum in Canada. Those searching online for information about claiming asylum will see an advertisement appear warning there are “strict guidelines” to follow, according to a statement from Immigration Minister Marc Miller’s office. The ads will appear in different languages, including Tamil, Hindi, Arabic and Persian. “We strongly discourage irregular crossings, which can be risky and dangerous, especially as the winter approaches,” a spokeswoman said in a statement. “We are monitoring the situation closely with the U.S. and reviewing our policies and processes to help address the issue.” National Post staylor@postmedia.com Get more deep-dive National Post political coverage and analysis in your inbox with the Political Hack newsletter, where Ottawa bureau chief Stuart Thomson and political analyst Tasha Kheiriddin get at what’s really going on behind the scenes on Parliament Hill every Wednesday and Friday, exclusively for subscribers. It's part of a push by the Biden administration to get as much aid to Kyiv as possible before leaving office on Jan. 20. Officials say the large package of aid includes a significant amount of munitions, including for the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems and the HAWK air defense system. It also will provide Stinger missiles and 155 mm- and 105 mm artillery rounds. The officials say they expect the announcement will be made on Monday. They spoke on condition of anonymity to provide details not yet made public. An online debate over foreign workers in tech shows tensions in Trump's political coalition WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — An online spat between factions of Donald Trump’s supporters over immigration and the tech industry has thrown internal divisions in the president-elect’s political movement into public display. The argument previews fissures and contradictory views his coalition could bring to the White House. The rift laid bare tensions between the newest flank of Trump’s movement — that is, wealthy members of the tech world who want more highly skilled workers in their industry — and people in Trump’s Make America Great Again base who championed his hardline immigration policies. A 9th telecoms firm has been hit by a massive Chinese espionage campaign, the White House says WASHINGTON (AP) — A top White House official says a ninth U.S. telecoms firm has been confirmed to have been hacked as part of a sprawling Chinese espionage campaign that gave officials in Beijing access to private texts and phone conversations of an unknown number of Americans. Administration officials said this month that at least eight telecommunications companies, as well as dozens of nations, had been affected by the Chinese hacking blitz known as Salt Typhoon. But Anne Neuberger, a deputy national security adviser, said Friday that a ninth victim had been identified after the administration released guidance to companies about how to hunt for Chinese culprits in their networks. Warren Upton, the oldest living survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor, dies at 105 HONOLULU (AP) — The oldest living survivor of the 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the last remaining survivor of the USS Utah has died. He was 105. Warren Upton died Wednesday at a hospital in Los Gatos, California. Kathleen Farley, the California state chair of the Sons and Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors, says he suffered a bout of pneumonia. The Utah was moored at Pearl Harbor when Japanese planes began bombing the Hawaii naval base in the early hours of Dec. 7, 1941. The attack propelled the U.S. into World War II. Israeli troops forcibly remove staff and patients from northern Gaza hospital, officials say DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Gaza's Health Ministry says Israeli troops have stormed one of the last hospitals operating in the territory's north and forced many of the staff and patients outside. Then they had to remove their clothes in winter weather. Friday's incident was the latest assault on Kamal Adwan Hospital. Staff say it has been hit multiple times in the past three months by Israeli troops waging an offensive against Hamas fighters in the surrounding neighborhoods. Israel's military says Hamas uses the hospital as a base. It did not provide evidence, and hospital officials have denied it. Azerbaijani and U.S. officials suggest plane that crashed may have been hit by weapons fire U.S. and Azerbaijani officials have said weapons fire may have brought down an Azerbaijani airliner that crashed on Wednesday, killing 38 people. The statements from Rashad Nabiyev and White House national security spokesman John Kirby on Friday raised pressure on Russia.
