Authorities in Romania have revealed details of what appears to be a major attempt to interfere in the country’s presidential elections using the social media platform TikTok, and with a series of cyber-attacks. Romania's domestic intelligence service says there are signs the effort was "co-ordinated by a state-sponsored actor". Calin Georgescu, a far-right Nato-sceptic who has previously praised Vladimir Putin, was almost unknown in Romania until he won the first round of voting in the presidential elections two weeks ago. Now Romanian intelligence says his sudden and surprise surge in popularity is down to a "highly organised" and "guerrilla" campaign on social media, sharing identical messaging and using influencers. They say it was conducted from "external locations" to bypass controls. A separate intelligence assessment says that Romania has been identified as an "enemy state" by Moscow and a priority target for what it calls "aggressive hybrid actions". The politically explosive information – which has landed just days before the second round of voting - comes from declassified documents published this evening by the outgoing president, Klaus Iohannis. They reveal how paid content supporting Georgescu was promoted on TikTok, without being marked as election campaigning – in violation of the platform’s own rules and of Romanian electoral law. Other candidates’ content was subject to closer controls. Georgescu has always said he spent "zero" on election promotion, denying he was even campaigning. But the intelligence documents identify one TikTok account which they say made payments of $381,000 (£299,819; €361,872) in just one month from 24 October – to users who were promoting Georgescu. Georgescu claims the release of the documents is a coordinated attempt to block his candidacy. “I think it’s the first time in the history of the world when a state is organising an action against a candidate to stop him from running,” he said in a TV interview on Wednesday. He also denied knowing any of the influencers or funders mentioned in the reports. The documents released in this highly unusual move were all papers drawn up for a meeting of the security council following the first round of the presidential election. They also reveal that access data for electoral websites was stolen from legitimate users and published online “on cyber-crime platforms originating from Russia”. Separately, the intelligence agencies report some 85,000 attempted hacks in an attempt to access electoral data and change content – including on election day. The report says the cyber-attackers used advanced methods to remain anonymous, working in a way and on a scale "typical of state-sponsored actors". An investigation is ongoing to discover who was responsible and whether there was any impact on the election. Russia has denied any interference in Romania's election process. Far-right frontrunner Georgescu is due to face reformist candidate Elena Lasconi in a second round vote on Sunday. Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu – who came 3rd in the presidential race – has now announced he will "fully endorse" Elena Lasconi. But that’s assuming the vote goes ahead. The prosecutor’s office is now examining the new documents. "I hope that, based on the evidence published today, the state authorities will take appropriate action, and all those responsible will be held accountable," Ciolacu said. He added that people's votes have shown they want the "continuation of Romania's European development path". A pro-EU protest has been called for Thursday evening. Commenting on the protest, Georgescu warned against possible unrest, citing the "Maidan" in Ukraine - the revolution of 2014 that ousted a pro-Russian president. "Please stay at home with your family. We need social tranquillity. God will not let Romania down,” Georgescu said.
Apple has yet to complete its transition from LCD to OLED , but will at some point move beyond this to microLED screens. Key supplier Foxconn has announced that it expects to begin mass production of the advanced display tech late next year. Foxconn made the announcement as it revealed a partnership with Porotech for microLED to be used in future AR headsets ... Apple’s move toward micro-LED Apple is so still to complete its transition to its third display technology, OLED: Originally, it used LCD with conventional backlighting Then it moved on to LCD with mini-LED backlighting The Apple Watch, iPhone, and latest iPads currently use OLED With MacBooks to follow, likely in 2026 Apple is already looking ahead to an even more advanced display tech, however, known as micro-LED. This offers even brighter displays with greater color accuracy, longevity, and power efficiency, and without the burn-in weakness of OLED. The company was expected to begin this move with a microLED Apple Watch, but later cancelled (or, likely, postponed) this plan as the tech wasn’t sufficiently advanced. Foxconn preps for mass production of microLED Key Apple partner Foxconn has announced that it expects to begin mass production of its first microLED screens late next year. These are tiny displays destined for a future AR headset. Hon Hai Technology Group (“Foxconn”) has announced a partnership with Porotech to enter the augmented reality (AR) glasses market. Leveraging Porotech’s cutting-edge gallium nitride (GaN) technology and Foxconn’s vertically integrated services, from MicroLED wafer processing to packaging and optical modules, the collaboration aims to meet the demands for micro-display chips and AR glasses production. Together, they will provide high-performance, high-brightness, compact, and lightweight AR display solutions to advance global AR and micro-display technology development [...] The company plans to establish a MicroLED wafer processing production line in Taichung, with mass production slated to begin in Q4 2025. That would likely indicate the first products incorporating the tech launching in Q1 2025. Foxconn says that the tech would meet the needs of “future mainstream global clients,” but doesn’t get any more specific than this. Photo by Daniel Olah on UnsplashNone

During his chat with reporters Tuesday, Pitt running backs coach Lindsey Lamar was quick with an answer when the question made it obvious. Is Desmond Reid playing through pain? “All season,” Lamar said, “like everybody in college football. I’m sure Kyle Louis (Pitt’s All-American candidate linebacker) is banged up, but he’s playing through it. “Des is a tough kid. He’s going to be banged up. He just plays through it because that’s what football players do.” Those who have followed Pitt through the first 11 of the 12-game season – the regular-season finale is Saturday at Boston College – might wonder where the Panthers might be if the transfer portal did not deliver Reid from Western Carolina this year and wide receiver Konata Mumfield from Akron before the 2022 season. At 5-foot-8, 175 pounds, Reid leads Pitt in rushing (797) and receptions (47). His pass-catching total (564) is second to Mumpfield, but tops among all ACC running backs. His average all-purpose yardage (150.9 per game) is second in the ACC to North Carolina running back Omarion Hampton and fifth in the nation. His total yardage (1,509) is eighth in the FBS. After opening the season with rushing totals of 145 and 148 yards against Kent State and Cincinnati, Reid reached triple digits only once more (120 against California). His average in the past four games is 64 per game. But possibly his most couragenous play came in the Clemson game when, with a sore ankle, he dived toward the pylon and missed scoring by 2 yards. The trick for Lamar is to give Reid enough rest without compromising the offense by leaving its most productive player on the bench. “When he’s tired and he needs a break, we keep a close eye on it and we get the next guy up,” Lamar said. “When he’s ready to roll, we roll him back in. We stay on top of it.” It’s important for Reid to be honest with Lamar and let him know when he needs a break. “I do trust him for the most part. He’ll let me know when he’s tired,” Lamar said. “It’s not just a situation where he goes until he can’t go (anymore). I have a system. It all depends on what (offensive coordinator Kade) Bell is thinking.” Mumpfield (6-1, 185) has matched his reception total from 2023 (44), with 669 yards and four touchdowns. With two solid games at Boston College and a bowl, he could approach his career high in yards (751 at Akron in 2021). Reid, Mumpfield and Bell have helped Pitt’s offense recover from a dismal 2023 season. Pitt is fifth in the ACC in points (359), thanks in part to the defense scoring five touchdowns. Still, the offense’s 39 touchdowns and an average of 413.9 yards per game is far superior to its 2023 numbers (28 and 317.9). Of course, none of that has been good enough to put Pitt in late-season contention for a berth in the ACC championship game. Injuries along the offensive line, wide receiver and quarterback have contributed to a four-game losing streak that followed the season-opening seven-game winning streak. Part of Mumpfield’s success can be traced to how he tries to keep “negativity out of everybody’s brain.” One of Pitt’s four co-captains, he said breaking the losinsg streak Saturday will require the team to “just be positive, focus and lock onto the little details.” “Come in with the mindset to dominate.” Mumpfield, who might be Pitt’s No. 1 NFL Draft prospect, could have been a candidate to transfer at any point during his three-yeard stay, but he said he never gave it thought. In his mind, loyalty matters. “I’m not going to lie. Once I go somewhere, I don’t really like to leave,” he said. “Even when I was at Akron, I really didn’t want to leave. They fired my whole coaching staff.” At Pitt, he set goals such as the Biletnikoff Award and All-ACC honors, but what he also wanted was “to be the best version of myself. “ “Guys across the building (Steelers coaches and scouts), they look at film, tape and the things you’re doing off the field,” he said. In the end, the quest was just as important to Mumpfield as the result. “Obviously, I want to be the best,” he said. “Sometimes, it doesn’t work out like that.”LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) — Andrej Jakimovski converted an off-balance layup with 8 seconds left, and Colorado handed No. 2 UConn its second loss in two days at the Maui Invitational, beating the two-time defending national champion 73-72 on Tuesday. A day after a 99-97 overtime loss to Memphis that left Huskies coach Dan Hurley livid about the officiating, UConn (4-2) couldn't shake the unranked Buffaloes (5-1), who shot 62.5% in the second half. With Colorado trailing 72-71 in the closing seconds, Jakimovski drove to his right and absorbed contact from UConn’s Liam McNeeley. He tossed the ball toward the glass and the shot was good as he fell to the floor. Hassan Diarra missed a 3-pointer just ahead of the buzzer for UConn. Elijah Malone and Julian Hammond III scored 16 points each for Colorado, and Jakimovski had 12 points and 10 rebounds. The Huskies led 40-32 at halftime and by nine points early in the second half, but Colorado quickly closed that gap. McNeeley led UConn with 20 points. UConn: Hurley's squad is facing its first adversity in quite a while. The Huskies arrived on Maui with a 17-game winning streak that dated to February. Colorado: The Buffaloes were held to season lows in points (56) and field goal percentage (37%) in a 16-point loss to Michigan State on Monday but shot 51.1% overall and 56.3% (9 of 16) from 3-point range against the Huskies. Hurley called timeout to set up the Huskies' final possession, but the Buffs forced them to take a contested 3. Colorado had a 28-26 rebounding advantage after being out-rebounded 42-29 by Michigan State. Colorado will play the Iowa-Dayton winner in the fifth-place game on Wednesday. UConn will play the loser of that matchup in the seventh-place game. Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here . Funding streams beckon interest from businessesApple could be holding back innovation in smartphone browsers, according to a British regulatory report, which recommended that Apple's and Google's duopoly in mobile ecosystems should be investigated with its new powers. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said on Friday its inquiry group had provisionally found that the mobile browser market was not working well for UK businesses and millions of phone users. The group's biggest concerns related to Apple's policies on accessing the web on iPhones . It provisionally found Apple's rules restricted competitors from delivering new features that could benefit consumers. It said many smaller British app developers wanted to use progressive web apps - an alternative way to provide apps to users without downloading them through an app store - but the technology was not able to fully take off on Apple's devices. A revenue-sharing agreement between Google and Apple had also reduced their incentives to compete in mobile browsers on Apple devices, it found. The new regime is expected to come into force in January. Apple said it disagreed with the CMA group's findings on its Safari browser and in-app browsing on its iOS operating system "We are concerned that the interventions discussed in the report for future consideration under the Digital Markets, Competition, and Consumers Act would undermine user privacy and security and hinder our ability to make the kind of technology that sets Apple apart," it said. The CMA opened an investigation into the market after it found in 2021 that Apple and Google had an effective duopoly on mobile ecosystems, including operating systems, app stores and web browsers on mobile devices. Inquiry group chair Margot Daly said issues identified in the report should be looked at by the regulator under its new powers. The CMA is expected to make a final decision in March. The independent inquiry group also proposed no further action should be taken on cloud gaming given its main concerns had been addressed.
