Want to break bread without breaking up the family this Thanksgiving? Try leaving politics at the door. This month’s presidential election was particularly polarizing and the internet is rife with stories of people planning to skip holiday gatherings or being uninvited to get-togethers due to who voted for who. For example, a CBS News/YouGov poll found 1 in 10 people have changed their plans to avoid gathering with people who voted for a different presidential candidate than they did. But experts say friends and family members of all political ideologies can enjoy one another’s company by focusing on other topics and being grateful for the positives in their lives. That’s the sentiment shared by folks across Franklin County and the North Quabbin region who were interviewed by the Greenfield Recorder ahead of Turkey Day. Orange resident Ann Reed said she is looking forward to again having Thanksgiving in Grafton, where her daughter lives and is hosting a gathering of friends and family. Passionate about her small-government views, Reed said her daughter is a theater professional and has many liberal friends in the arts world. “There have always been people who find it very intellectual to argue politics at the dinner table. I have always found it to be uncouth and ungrateful and a Heimlich maneuver waiting to happen,” she said with a laugh. “We’ve just enjoyed the holiday.” Reed mentioned seeing some younger women online talking about removing their fathers from their lives for voting for President-elect Donald Trump. She said this hurt her on a personal level because her father died in 1973. “I would give anything to have Thanksgiving with my own father,” she said fighting back tears. “He did not live to walk me down the aisle, meet my children or have me make Thanksgiving dinner for him.” Her father, Arnold E. Fallon, was a U.S. Marine veteran and pharmacist who she said made Thanksgiving a special occasion for many years. Article continues after... Cross|Word Flipart Typeshift SpellTower Really Bad Chess Reed said those in her family’s social circle have always had more to talk about than politics and they simply pass the time with lively conversation and witty exchanges. In fact, she recalled a time when there was a Democrat, a Republican, a Libertarian and an Independent in her four-member immediate family “and it was never a problem.” Athol resident Susannah Whipps said she hosts Thanksgiving for about a dozen family members in the house once owned by her parents, who have died. “I feel the responsibility of having a homebase still for family members. We’ve got family members along a wide spectrum of political ideologies and have different feelings about the election,” she said, adding that, to avoid having awkward breaks in conversation, she has asked her guests to brainstorm and share funny or moving stories about her parents and grandparents. “You can put the battles aside.” Whipps knows a thing or two about seeing all sides of a political debate, as she is the only unenrolled member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives. Originally a Republican, she left the party in 2017 because nearly two-thirds of her constituents are unaffiliated with a major political party and she wanted to put people over politics. A classically trained chef with a degree from Johnson & Wales University, she said the only heated debate allowed at her Thanksgiving table is whether her guests prefer canned cranberry sauce over her homemade chutney. Whipps will be sworn in for her sixth term in January. David Lewis, chair of the Greenfield Republican Town Committee, said he and a friend plan to attend the Thanksgiving meal at Living Waters Assembly of God at 450 Davis St. in Greenfield. He said the meal is offered to the entire community and he is certain there are guests every year with differing opinions, and politics is never dredged up. “I think, just don’t even talk about it. It’s over. It’s done with, the election. And we all have to move on to the next thing,” he said. Lewis mentioned he has lived at The Weldon apartments in Greenfield for 18 years, and he and his neighbors with different political affiliations meet for a coffee hour every Wednesday. He said politics come up commonly but there is never any disdain or resentment. “We just agree to disagree,” Lewis said. “We don’t throw things or get violent.” Greenfield resident Sandra Boston said her Thanksgiving guests will consist of people who share her progressive values, but she would still prefer politics take a rest. “First of all, be much more interested in asking what’s going on in their life rather than who they voted for,” she said. Boston advised that people should tread lightly if they broach the subject of politics and always remember that young children “will pick up on the energy” if the environment becomes inhospitable. She mentioned her oldest son is a Trump supporter living in Virginia and though they seldom see eye-to-eye, their email exchanges remain kind and affectionate. “We always end it with, ‘I love you,’” she said. Boston mentioned she belongs to a local chapter of Braver Angels, a citizens’ organization aimed at depolarizing American political culture by fostering conversation between liberals and conservatives. The Greenfield group has met at the Greenfield Public Library once a month since 2017. “It’s the only place in my daily life where I sit down with someone of the other political persuasion for an hour and a half and listen. The point of it is to ask questions in order to understand. You know, ‘Tell me more about why you see it that way,’” she said. “We’re not here to change anybody’s minds — we’re here to understand.” Boston mentioned she is a teacher of communication skills, offering eight-week classes in conscious communication. “Don’t try to change anybody’s mind. The point of being family and seeking unity is being able to hold the difference. Have respect for the person even if we don’t have respect for the opinion,” she said. “People don’t want to keep talking to you if you try to tell them they’re wrong.” The Poynter Institute, a global nonprofit, published an article about how to avoid political arguments at Thanksgiving. NEW YORK (AP) — A number of President-elect Donald Trump 's most prominent Cabinet picks and appointees have been targeted by bomb threats and “swatting attacks," Trump's transition team said Wednesday. The FBI said it was investigating. “Last night and this morning, several of President Trump’s Cabinet nominees and Administration appointees were targeted in violent, unAmerican threats to their lives and those who live with them," Trump transition spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said in a statement. The attacks ranged from bomb threats to swatting, in which attackers initiate an emergency law enforcement response against a target victim under false pretenses, she said. The tactic has become a popular one in recent years. Leavitt said law enforcement and other authorities acted quickly to ensure the safety of those who were targeted and Trump and his transition team are grateful. Among those targeted were New York Rep. Elise Stefanik, Trump’s pick to serve as the next ambassador to the United Nations ; Matt Gaetz, Trump’s initial pick to serve as attorney general ; Oregon Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer, whom Trump chose to lead the Department of Labor , and former New York congressman Lee Zeldin, who has been tapped to lead the Environmental Protection Agency. Law enforcement officials are also looking into whether Susie Wiles, Trump’s incoming chief of staff, and Pam Bondi, the former Florida attorney general whom Trump has chosen as Gaetz’s replacement, and other incoming administration officials were also victims — as well as how each was targeted, according to a law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity as the investigation continues. Wiles and Bondi did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The FBI said in a statement that it was “aware of numerous bomb threats and swatting incidents targeting incoming administration nominees and appointees" and was investigating with its law enforcement partners. White House spokesperson Saloni Sharma said President Joe Biden had been briefed and the White House is in touch with federal law enforcement and Trump's transition team. Biden “continues to monitor the situation closely," Sharma said, adding the president and his administration “condemn threats of political violence.” Stefanik's office said that, on Wednesday morning, she, her husband, and their 3-year-old son were driving home from Washington for Thanksgiving when they were informed of a bomb threat to their residence in Saratoga County. Police swept Stefanik’s home on Wednesday morning in response to the bomb threat but did not locate any explosive devices, New York State Police said. Zeldin said in a social media post that he and his family had also been threatened. “A pipe bomb threat targeting me and my family at our home today was sent in with a pro-Palestinian themed message,” he wrote on X . “My family and I were not home at the time and are safe." In Florida, the Okaloosa County sheriff’s office said on Facebook that it “received notification of a bomb threat referencing former Congressman Matt Gaetz’s supposed mailbox at a home in the Niceville area" Wednesday. While a family member resides at the address, the office said, Gaetz “is NOT a resident.” No threatening devices were found. Story continues below video Gaetz was Trump’s initial pick to serve as attorney general, but he withdrew from consideration after allegations that he paid women for sex and slept with underage women. Gaetz has vehemently denied any wrongdoing, and a Justice Department investigation into sex trafficking allegations ended with no charges against him. The threats follow a political campaign marked by disturbing and unprecedented violence. In July, a gunman opened fire at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, grazing the then-candidate in the ear with a bullet and killing one of his supporters. The Secret Service later thwarted a subsequent assassination attempt at Trump's West Palm Beach, Florida, golf course when an agent spotted the barrel of a gun poking through a perimeter fence while Trump was golfing. Trump was also the subject of an Iranian murder-for-hire plot , with a man saying he had been tasked with planning the assassination of the Republican president-elect. Also this week, authorities arrested a man they say posted videos on social media threatening to kill Trump, according to court documents. In one video posted on Nov. 13, Manuel Tamayo-Torres threatened to shoot the former president while holding what appeared to be an AR-15 style rifle, authorities said Among the other videos he posted was one from an arena in Glendale, Arizona on Aug. 23, the same day Trump held a campaign rally there, according to court papers. An attorney for Tamayo-Torres did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday. Public figures across the political spectrum have been targeted in recent years by hoax bomb threats and false reports of shootings at their homes. About a year ago the FBI responded to an uptick in such incidents at the homes of public officials, state capitols and courthouses across the country around the holidays. Many were locked down and evacuated in early January after receiving bomb threats. No explosives were found and no one was hurt. Some of those targeted last year were Georgia Lt. Gov. Burt Jones, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu and Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost. The judges overseeing the civil fraud case against Trump in New York and the criminal election interference case against him in Washington were both targeted earlier this year. Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith, who recently abandoned the two criminal cases he brought against Trump, was also the subject of a fake emergency call on Christmas Day last year. Earlier this year, schools, government buildings and the homes of city officials in Springfield, Ohio, received a string of hoax bomb threats after Trump falsely accused members of Springfield’s Haitian community of abducting and eating cats and dogs. And in 2022, a slew of historically Black colleges and universities nationwide were targeted with dozens of bomb threats, with the vast majority arriving during the celebration of Black History Month. The U.S. Capitol Police said in a statement Wednesday that anytime a member of Congress is the victim of a swatting' incident, “we work closely with our local and federal law enforcement partners.” The force declined to provide further details, in part to “minimize the risk of copy-cats.” Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson called the threats “dangerous and unhinged.” “This year, there was not just one but TWO assassination attempts on President Trump," he wrote on X . “Now some of his Cabinet nominees and their families are facing bomb threats.” He added: “It is not who we are in America.” ___ Richer reported from Washington. Hallie Abrams , better known as The Wardrobe Consultant , is a true fashion expert. She’s the ultimate authority on curating a capsule wardrobe that reflects your creativity and lifestyle. Her approach centers on wearability and durability, with a keen eye for high-quality pieces designed to withstand countless wears and washes. And now that Cyber Weekend is here, Hallie is sharing the best deals to shop — from splurge-worthy leather bags to ultra soft rollneck sweaters you’ll be wearing all holiday season long. It’s also a great time to snag some holiday gifts although, let’s face it, who better to shop for than yourself? As a wardrobe stylist, I’ve gotten very good at shopping sales... and what I mean by that is I’ve gotten good at understanding what products are worth the money from a quality and style perspective. I gravitate towards things that feel timeless, with a lot of wearability that won’t pill or tear after a single wash. The other question I ask myself: would I buy this if it weren’t on sale? And if the answer is no, then I abandon cart and move on. I get a lot of questions from my clients and friends about what I recommend purchasing during Cyber Weekend and my answer is almost always the tried-and-true products that look great aesthetically but are also loved by hundreds, if not thousands, of reviewers. Here are the picks I’m shopping for myself and for my gifting list this season. Old Navy Old Navy Rockstar Jeans (50% off all styles): The Old Navy Rockstar jeans are a tried-and-true classic that’s been a top-seller for ages, and that’s because the quality is impressive despite the affordable price tag. It’s a prime example of ‘bang for your buck’ because it combines the perfect amount of rigidity and stretchiness. I call them airplane jeans because they’re shockingly comfortable and still look put-together. They come in a bunch of washes and sizes (including kids!) and start at about $19. And if you’re looking to shop more Old Navy deals, this ponte knit jumpsuit is perfect for holiday parties and all three colors are the perfect neutral: black, camel, and dark cherry. It’s one of those classic styles you’ll get a ton of wear out of. Madewell Madewell Essential Bucket Bag (now $124, originally $178): This beauty may be a splurge, but I cannot say enough good things about the quality... and this coming from someone who has spent quite a lot of money on designer purses in the past. This is real leather, it’s the perfect work tote because it’s roomy enough for a laptop but isn’t too massive, and what better time to grab it than now, when it’s 30% off? If you’re planning to shop the rest of Madwell’s Black Friday sale, my recommendation is to stock up on basics: good t-shirts, solid sweaters. Good everyday essentials are the bread and butter of any wardrobe and Madewell, from the cuts to the fabrics, is very good in that department. J. Crew J. Crew Rollneck Sweater (now $44.50, originally $98): My secret to getting dressed for any semi-casual holiday event is throwing on a really, really good sweater and tossing on your favorite earrings. This J. Crew option is beautiful. The yarn is extremely soft and cozy, the subtle rollneck gives it a sophisticated finish, and there are a ton of color options so you can pick whatever best suits your style. My recommendation would be the festive one of course: you can’t go wrong with lipstick red. J. Crew also has up to 60% off a ton of great accessories that can zhuzh up any look. And if you’re looking for practical stocking stuffers, what better than actual socks? It’s a gift we hated as kids but trust me, anyone that’s passed their teen years will appreciate this cozy three-pack . Calpak Calpak Luka Duffel (now $102, originally $128): If you have any travel plans coming up and have been carrying around the same tattered overnight bag for, well, forever — no judgment! — this Calpak Luka duffel is excellent. The material is easy to clean and durable so it won’t look worn after a single trip, and you’d be shocked by how much you can fit inside... an excellent investment if you’re an overpacker like me. The entire site is up to 60% off if you’re looking to invest in some luggage, too. It’s an excellent brand and their designs are easy to spot at baggage claim. BaubleBar BaubleBar (30% off everything): The easiest way to zhuzh up any simple outfit (and to enhance everyday dressing) is by curating a solid jewelry collection that feels reliable. BaubleBar has excellent options that won’t tarnish on your skin but also don’t cost a fortune. The Dalilah earrings are a beautiful, simple hoop that come in three sizes and the Bennet tennis bracelet is simply stunning for the price. It’s a strand of crystals that looks dainty but won’t break at the first sign of a snag. Hill House Home (30% off everything): This brand became mega popular for their iconic Nap Dress , and for very good reason. This is a timeless, classic dress that you’ll be able to wear for decades to come and as the name would imply, it’s so comfortable that you can nap in it. I’m loving the tartan print ahead of the holidays but you also can’t go wrong with a neutral like black. UGG UGG (up to 50% off select styles): Listen, you can never go wrong with a good pair of UGGS. They’re basically like walking on a cloud, and they’re also the ultimate gift for pretty much everyone on your entire list. They’re offering up to 50% off select styles right now and you’ll be hard-pressed to find a more comfortable shoe to run errands or grab a coffee in. It's no secret: when we savour a delicious piece of fish or a platter of seafood, we're not just consuming valuable omega-3s and vitamin D. Alongside these benefits come less appetising elements – countless micro- and nano-plastics. These plastic particles, measuring less than 5 millimetres, enter our oceans through human waste and penetrate the food chain . According to an Ifremer study , around 24,400 billion microplastics are floating on the ocean's surface. These particles are found in all marine organisms – from microalgae to fish, which occupy higher levels of the food chain. This phenomenon not only threatens marine ecosystems but also raises concerns about potential risks to human health. What exactly do we know about the accumulation of these pollutants in marine life and the dangers they pose to human health? Micro- and nano-plastics: an invisible threat Since the 1950s, plastic production has grown exponentially, reaching 58 million tonnes in Europe in 2022 alone. This has led to massive amounts of waste. Over time, wind, waves, sunlight and microorganisms break down larger plastic waste into microplastics (1–5 mm) and nanoplastics (smaller than 100 nanometers), which now contaminate all parts of the environment, including the air, soil, and water. The process by which these plastics accumulate in organisms across different levels of the food chain is known as 'bioaccumulation'. Research from our laboratory reveals that in aquatic environments, micro- and nano-plastics are ingested by a wide range of species – from microalgae at the base of the food chain to top predators like eels. The impact on marine life These ingestions have serious consequences. Studies show that microplastics can cause toxic effects in marine animals. For instance, in mussels, microplastics can block digestive systems, activate immune responses, cause DNA damage and interfere with the expression of genes essential to various cellular functions. The severity of these effects depends on the plastics' size, composition, degree of degradation and any harmful chemical additives they may contain. Plastics often contain high levels of phthalates, which are endocrine disruptors . These chemicals can interfere with hormonal systems, posing risks not just to marine life but potentially to humans as well. Risks to human health Plastics ingested by marine animals inevitably make their way into our food supply. Frequent seafood consumers are estimated to ingest thousands of microplastic particles annually. Although research on the precise health effects on humans is ongoing, some troubling hypotheses have emerged. Once inside the human body, these particles may cause damage similar to that observed in fish. Studies on human cells indicate that micro- and nano-plastics can disrupt cellular functions in ways akin to the effects seen in marine organisms. Scientists are particularly concerned about the toxic impacts of plastic additives. Additionally, micro- and nano-plastics can act as carriers for pathogens or bacteria, potentially increasing the risk of infectious diseases. The urgency to tackle plastic bioaccumulation in the food chain cannot be overstated. By taking swift action to limit plastic usage and improve recycling technologies, we can slow the progression of this environmental and health crisis. Read the original article .French President Emmanuel Macron assembled a new government under Francois Bayrou, his fourth prime minister of the year, on Monday evening. He appointed a cabinet to drag the second-largest EU economy out of a political crisis over budget proposals. Eric Lombard, a finance professional, was appointed finance minister. He is tasked with delivering the country's next budget after the previous government collapsed over contentious budget proposals of €60 billion ($62.9 billion) worth of tax increases and spending cuts. The country has been running without passing a formal budget since. Lombard will aim to quickly pass the 2025 budget and survive the test of a no-confidence motion by the opposition. Finding support for the new budget is expected to be difficult as Macron's party lawmakers are in the minority in the National Assembly. Former prime minister Elisabeth Borne, 63, was appointed the education minister in the new cabinet. Manuel Valls (62), also a former prime minister, returned as overseas territories minister, while former interior minister Gerald Darmanin was appointed justice minister. Macron decided to retain Defence Minister Sebastien Lecornu and Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot for their current assignment. Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau, a conservative who has promised to crack down on illegal immigration, and right-wing Culture Minister Rachida Dati also retained their ministries. Bayrou expressed confidence in delivering the budget by mid-February after consulting various groups and stakeholders. The first meeting of the cabinet will be on January 3, and the prime minister will lay out a policy agenda to the National Assembly on January 14. "I believe the path exists — maybe it’s mad optimism — but I can tell you with certainty that if we don’t succeed in this attempt, it’s the last stop before the cliff edge,” Bayrou said in an interview with France 2 television on Thursday. NoneStudents at the Portland-based Buff Bay Primary School were exposed to innovation and careers in agriculture at an agri-expo held recently at the institution. Under the theme: ‘Youth in Agriculture: Shaping the New FACE of Food,’ the event featured displays by entities highlighting various professions in the sector and how technology is being used to boost production and productivity to ensure food security. Vice Principal at the school, Keisha Braimbridge, who addressed the session, said that students can make a positive impact on the agricultural sector by becoming creators and innovators of technologies that can enhance stainability. “You can help your country to become more food secure by setting up more agriculture businesses and to innovate through climate smart technology for export expansion,” she said. “The hope is that you will become interested in the field of agriculture and discover new ways of farming,” she added. Miss Braimbridge said that agriculture is now about research to improve soil quality and plant productivity. “It is about developing businesses, and we definitely want to improve the amount of goods that are exported from Jamaica so that we can grow our economy,” the Vice Principal said. Portland 4-H Clubs Parish Manager, Alain Cox, in his remarks, said the agency is seeking to inspire youth to embrace agriculture as a profession. “It is important to note that the industry is no longer a bush thing where you are seeing a man walking with a cutlass. We are so advanced in utilising technology and this industry is full of young, brilliant and vibrant persons,” he noted. With support from the Jamaica 4-H Clubs, Buff Bay Primary is using farming technologies to generate the interest of students in agriculture and to boost food production for their canteen and for the open market. The Jamaica 4-H Clubs is the leading youth training organisation with more than 105,000 members across Jamaica. Manchester United Supporters’ Trust (MUST) revealed the club had informed the fans forum that changes to certain ticket policies will take effect immediately “and that this price will apply for kids and over-65s as well as adults”. The news comes as the club confirmed the cost of paying off former manager Erik ten Hag and his staff was £10.4million, while a release clause to bring in new head coach Ruben Amorim and his staff amounted to £11m. The figures were part of a longer version of the club’s first-quarter accounts which were released to the New York Stock Exchange on Wednesday. United and Everton fans are set to stage a protest against ticket prices ahead of their Premier League clash on Sunday. Supporters are being asked to gather next to the trinity statue outside Old Trafford to support the Football Supporters’ Association’s ‘Stop Exploiting Loyalty’ campaign. As well as increasing prices generally, fans are unhappy about the removal of concession tickets for certain groups. An MUST statement read: “Suffice it to say that the idea that the fans must pay their ‘fair share’ for the club’s excesses and/or mismanagement — and above all, the Glazers’ lack of investment over two decades — is offensive. “We fans have done everything we have been asked. We have cheered the players on even in the face of substandard performance. “We have objected to this action in the strongest possible terms, both for the action itself and the complete lack of consultation, which is a step backward based on the process we had agreed with the club before INEOS’ arrival. “Over the coming days MUST will be seeking urgent discussions with the club to get them to listen to fans’ concern at this policy. “United fans have sucked up a lot. We will not be silent on this and we need to be prepared to resist any attempts to further drive up ticket prices.” Supporters’ group The 1958 said along with United and Everton, both Liverpool and Manchester City supporters will also display an FSA banner ahead of their match on Sunday. “With 19 out of 20 Premier League clubs increasing ticket prices this season, FC58, Everton, Liverpool and City supporters will display the FSA banner to raise awareness that any future season ticket price increases, removal of concessions, and treating match-going supporters as an easy target to make quick revenues will not be tolerated,” the fans’ group said. “With the discussions around the rebuild or redevelopment of Old Trafford, we need to send a message to the club that we are laser focused on keeping football affordable and looking after our loyal, match-going fan base. “Manchester United have announced that they will be selling tickets to members for the remainder of the season at a minimum of £66 irrespective of if you are under 16, youth, OAP or disabled, which is a clear exploitation of the loyal fan base and their first move towards dynamic pricing.”NFL NOTES

Tetairoa McMillan, one of the best wide receivers in Arizona history, will skip his final year of eligibility and enter the 2025 NFL Draft, he announced on social media on Thursday. In three seasons, the Hawaii native also posted the fourth-most catches (213) and third-most touchdowns (26) in school history. "Wildcat Nation, this journey has been everything I dreamed of and more," McMillan wrote on Instagram. In 2024, McMillan totaled 84 grabs (ninth in Division I) for 1,319 yards (third in Division I) and eight touchdowns for the 4-8 Wildcats. He also ranked third in Division I with 109.9 receiving yards per game. McMillan is a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award, given to the most outstanding receiver in college football. --Field Level MediaCharlamagne Says 'Old Ass' Biden Shouldn't Give 'Preemptive Pardons' To Trump Rivals: 'Don't That Make You Look Guilty?'From Maui to the Caribbean, Thanksgiving tournaments a beloved part of college basketball

Johnson December 23, 2024 The State Department’s center for fighting global disinformation received a lump of coal in its Christmas stocking this week as congressional lawmakers excluded new funding and authorization for the office beyond this year. The Global Engagement Center, which tracks foreign disinformation, will lose its authority on Dec. 24. Despite a concerted push by State officials to lobby Congress for an extension, a measure to extend the center’s authority into 2031 was stripped out of the final version of defense authorization legislation that passed through the Senate. “The Global Engagement Center will terminate by operation of law [by the end of the day] on December 23, 2024,” a State Department spokesperson told CyberScoop in an email. “The Department of State has consulted with Congress regarding next steps.” According to figures provided by State, the GEC has a staff of approximately 120 and an annual budget of $61 million. The spokesperson did not address questions about what will happen to the center’s personnel and technology following the closure. The shuttering will leave the State Department without a dedicated office for countering disinformation abroad for the first time since 2016. The closure comes at the end of a year when U.S. officials, foreign political leaders and private companies tracking disinformation have alleged that Russia and China have engaged in concerted propaganda campaigns targeting democratic elections in Taiwan , Moldova , Georgia , Romania and other countries. “This is extremely frustrating,” Mark Montgomery, former executive director of the Cyberspace Solarium and a supporter of extending the center’s authority, told CyberScoop. “On a bipartisan basis, both political parties know that Russia, China and, to a lesser degree, Iran and other non-state actors, conduct information operations against us spreading lies, and the GEC was a good tool for ensuring that the truth, as we see it, came out.” While the center does not focus on disinformation targeting the United States, its work with related organizations faced criticism from congressional Republicans and Elon Musk, who accused the center in 2023 of being “the worst offender in U.S. government censorship [and] media manipulation.” Musk is now an adviser to President-elect Donald Trump and was placed in charge of an advisory board for cutting programs and reducing government spending. Additionally, Republicans on the Hill raised questions about the GEC’s value, suggesting its work might duplicate existing analysis from the private sector and other parts of government. In interviews with CyberScoop and FedScoop last month, GEC leaders pushed back on those views, calling their work “critical” to combatting foreign propaganda campaigns in allied countries and emphasizing that they take active steps to exclude data on U.S. persons from their analysis. “We are really the first analytical unit in the U.S. government that takes this kind of comprehensive approach of looking at threat actors — Iranians, [China], the Russians — and try to understand ... what their influence is broadly on the information space in different geographic regions,” said Carrie Goux, GEC’s acting deputy coordinator. Lindsay Gorman, a former White House official under the Biden administration, told CyberScoop that there is “a lack of recognition in Congress that the wars democracies are fighting with autocrats overseas are no longer only in the physical domain, but in the cyberspace realm of 1s and 0s.” “Whether their goal is to marshal support for invading neighbors or undermine U.S. credibility overseas, the U.S. needs a means to fight back. One way is to expose covert campaigns for what they are — important work the GEC is doing,” said Gorman, now at the nonprofit German Marshall Fund. “GEC has been the eyes and ears on the ground when it comes to information threats overseas, tracking where autocratic strategic objectives lie and how tactics are evolving to guide responses.” Gorman stressed that Russian and Chinese disinformation campaigns “aren’t going away” and are increasingly leveraging social media and emerging technologies like generative AI “to sow discord and undermine democracy around the world.” GEC officials also said their limited budget has hindered efforts to acquire advanced technology needed to support their work, including tools to detect AI-manipulated media. State Department documents obtained by FedScoop detail a range of solutions and tools the center hoped to acquire if it was reauthorized, including a system for detecting photoshopped images, a “meme detection” model to help analyze and contextualize imagery, a detector for imagery created through Stable Diffusion, and a tool to detect AI-generated assets in video. Montgomery said that with Republicans set to take control of the State Department and both houses of Congress next month, they are positioned to shape the GEC’s mission and operations to address any concerns about impinging on domestic U.S. issues. “The frustration is, why not give it an extension now that you’re basically responsible?” Montgomery asked.

ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Falcons are back in first place in the NFC South and again in control of their playoff hopes. Rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr. showed the poise in his first NFL start the Falcons will need to take advantage of their opportunity to end a six-year playoff drought. Powered by a big-play defense that produced two pick-6s, a solid starting debut by Penix and two rushing touchdowns by Bijan Robinson, the Falcons cruised past the hapless New York Giants 34-7 on Sunday. On Sunday night, the Falcons (8-7) received the assist they needed when Tampa Bay lost at Dallas . Because the Falcons swept the Buccaneers, they hold the tiebreaker advantage if they remain tied atop the division. The Falcons have games remaining at Washington on Sunday night and at home against Carolina to close the regular season. If Atlanta wins both games, it would win the division and have a home playoff game. The Falcons are assured of their best record since a 10-6 finish under coach Dan Quinn in 2017, their most recent playoff season. Quinn is in his first season as Washington's coach and has led the Commanders (10-5) to three straight wins, including Sunday's 36-33 victory over Philadelphia. Penix, the No. 8 overall pick in this year's NFL draft, was promoted after coach Raheem Morris benched Kirk Cousins. Penix completed 18 of 27 passes for 202 yards with one interception on a pass that should have been caught by tight end Kyle Pitts. Penix is not a dual-threat quarterback, but he showed the ability to escape pressure in the pocket that Cousins lacks following his 2023 Achilles tendon injury. The left-hander's superior arm strength also was immediately obvious. Robinson's production provided a safety net for the offense which helped make for a smooth transition to Penix. Robinson had scoring runs of 2 and 4 yards. Robinson has rushed for 10 touchdowns this season. He's the first Atlanta player with 10 more more rushing touchdowns since Devonta Freeman during the 2016 Super Bowl season. Robinson ran for 94 yards on 22 carries and had 103 yards from scrimmage. His 11th game this season with at least 100 yards from scrimmage are the most for the Falcons since Warrick Dunn's 11 in 2005. Morris said Robinson deserves to be considered with Philadelphia's Saquon Barkley in discussions regarding the league's top running backs. “Bijan has been outstanding all year in the things that he’s able to do," Morris said. “He’s special. If it wasn’t for this other guy out in Philly, he’d get a lot more recognition across the league. But that guy is having a special year, and Bijan’s not far behind him.” With kicker Younghoe Koo on injured reserve and watching from the sideline, Riley Patterson was wide left on his first field-goal attempt from 43 yards. Patterson rebounded to make attempts from 52 and 37 yards. Jessie Bates III and Matthew Judon each had a pick-6 to highlight a day of big plays for the defense. Arnold Ebiketie had his fifth sack of the season and added a fumble recovery. Kaden Ellis added a strip-sack. He also has five sacks this season, including sacks in four consecutive games. It is the longest streak for Atlanta since Patrick Kerney had sacks in five straight games in 2001. There was some thought that a change at quarterback could be good news for Pitts, who often seemed to be missing in action with Cousins running the offense. After all, a tight end often is a natural target for quick passes from a rookie making his first start. Instead, Pitts had a poor start to the Penix era when he bobbled his first pass from the left-hander, creating an interception by cornerback Cor’Dale Flott. Pitts caught a 7-yard pass on his only other target. For the season, Pitts has 41 catches for 543 yards and three touchdowns. There will be much interest in this week's injury report after WR Drake London (hamstring) was hurt in the second half. Morris provided an optimistic postgame outlook on London. CB Antonio Hamilton (quad) did not return after leaving the game in the first half. 8: Bates has four interceptions and four forced fumbles. His combined eight forced turnovers lead the NFL. The game against Jayden Daniels and the Commanders is a reminder Penix was only the fourth of six quarterbacks selected in the first round of the NFL draft. Daniels, from LSU, was the No. 2 overall pick behind Caleb Williams by Chicago. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nflCelebrity documentaries are commanding lofty price tags at the moment, even though “star power” itself seems to be losing its sizzle. The facts are nasty: Superstar endorsements carried zero clout in the presidential elections. Further, studios have lost their zeal for the once pivotal pre-opening star interview circuit. Superstar vehicles like Wolfs (George Clooney and Brad Pitt) drifted before audiences with limited exposure to blurbdom. Sequel numbers ( Moana 2, Gladiator II ) carry greater weight than festival fervor. Defying this algorithmic blur, Apple TV still felt its Billie Eilish caper was worth $27 million, and Disney forked out $32 million for Elton John: Never Too Late . Disney also paid handsomely for a new/old doc titled Beatles ’64 from Paul McCartney, premiering this week. Could Taylor Swift be far behind? Intriguingly, audiences still register an appetite for docs about past legends like Humphrey Bogart as well as semi-present ones like Bob Dylan — even litigating about their validity. Martha Stewart claims that director R.J. Cutler didn’t respect her “notes” on her doc Martha , for which Netflix paid seven figures. So are docs credible? Are they really “documentaries” at all? The mainstream stars of the past have always been skilled at re-invention. Famed “tough guys” like Bogart or Lee Marvin erased their true backgrounds as heirs to blue blood families, exchanging their smile for a snarl. They’ve thus managed to control their narratives. “When a star is involved in the making of their films, is it a sellout?” asks Sheila Nevins, who as HBO’s former chief of docs won myriad awards for her work. It depends on who’s in charge. An increasing number of docs rely initially on private funding, and thus usually exercise control of their facts. Matt Tyrnauer followed that route with Carville , telling a vivid personal and political story that triggered competitive bidding from distributors: CNN won over Netflix. Private funding for a doc on Kim Novak is being assembled by Sue Cameron, a credentialed columnist and producer working with director Alexander Philippe, who did a doc on Billy Friedkin. Now a gifted painter, Novak’s hits inclcuded Vertigo (1958) and Picnic (1955) and she wants to tell her own story. All this can create peril for doc directors. Cutler’s work has ranged from Marlon Brando to Anna Wintour, and he worked hard to accommodate Stewart, who has a lot to say about everything. Despite Martha’s peeves, “The lens figuratively and literally remains mine,” he insists. While celebrity docs proliferate, the market for celebrity interviews has become marginalized. Superstars are understandably confused whether their projects will play theatrically or in streamerville. The podcast and late-night TV route can be frustrating and time-consuming: Mark Ruffalo said he once spent five months promoting a film on which he’d worked five days. Actors often face contradictory demands on the interview circuit, their interviews contradicting the characters they play. Kieran Culkin ’s character is excruciatingly obnoxious in A Real Pain opposite Jesse Eisenberg, who also directs, but he’s all charm for interviews on the film, and may even nab a nomination. Bogart’s crusty personality is clearly registered in his interviews for the new doc Bogart: Life Comes in Flashes ... . It’s also key to his on-screen persona in movies like To Have and Have Not (1944). “I don’t trust any bastard who doesn’t drink — people who don’t drink are afraid of revealing themselves,” Bogart declares in the doc. Yet Kathryn Ferguson, the doc’s director, also reveals the star’s gentler and more patrician side: He married co-star Lauren Bacall after completing Have Not . A doc built around another legendary star will premiere this week. Ken Burns calls Leonardo da Vinci ”the person of the millennium” in his riveting PBS tribute. That title may be disputed when a new doc about Swift makes its debut. It has not as yet been scheduled.

Especially Ant #ImACelebrity #ImACeleb," as one shared: "I'm done with Dean. Even Ant and Dec are beyond done with him. Never seen them this disappointed in a contestant before.", reports the Express . One fan noted: "Ant said on Extra Jungle last night the amount of work that goes into the trials and then for Dean not to even make an effort #imaceleb," with another writing: "Ant can't stand Dean, he is making it very obvious #ImACeleb." During the trial today, Dean confessed it "wasn't looking good" as he faced his challenge. He initially succeeded in combining two liquids to trigger a chemical reaction, bagging two stars for camp with ease. Next, he tackled the containment areas, where he had to gather stars using only his mouth, all while sharing the space with cockroaches, crickets and mealworms, giant lizards, snakes and spiders. He secured 2 stars for camp in the first and third areas, before uttering the infamous phrase I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here in the fifth containment. Following the trial, Ant and Dec appeared live, expressing their frustration over Dean not completing the trial. They explained that if he had just let them inform him about the fish guts, he wouldn't have panicked. Both Ant and Dec seemed annoyed as they described how Dean had faced the spiders and snakes, but called out the famous phrase during the fish guts because he didn't know what was on his head. *I'm A Celebrity... That’s how I met Amy Stearns, a relentless Detroit Lakes booster, Beardsley race organizer and someone gifted at persuading people to do slightly uncomfortable stuff without planning. Five minutes after I showed up at the pre-race pasta feed in Washington Ballpark Field — where nearly 200 runners had paid $10 to carbo-load and hear Beardsley sing and play his guitar — Stearns, whom I had never met in person, told me I would be filling in for the famous no-show. “Speak a few words. Talk about the rebranding of the Minnesota Star Tribune. Tell them why you drove 200 miles to run six miles,” she said. Beardsley was the primary reason I made the drive. I was just as disappointed as the rest of the crowd. But Stearns’ assignment was quite easy, especially after she informed me that she’s a fan of the Strib. Besides, I know my tribe. Runners run when no one chases. We embrace pain. We celebrate when fatigue renders a beautiful face unrecognizable. The mere act of running is the currency that unites. That was my premise to a crowd of unfamiliar people, who returned the group hug. The next morning, as I raced around picturesque Detroit Lakes, two observations stood out. The first was a boy around 10 whom I spotted near the halfway mark. I don’t care how old I get; I don’t enjoy being beat by a child. After I caught up to the boy, he and I became instant race-support partners when he informed me he needed to vomit. I encouraged him to move to the side of the road so as not to spew on others. He slowed but never stopped. After he regained his composure, we finished the race together, strategically picking off people along the route. He finished a step ahead of me. I’ll be aiming for him next year. The other observation was the lack of political yard signage along the route. Even though we were in the thick of a contentious political season, no lawn that I noticed was used as a showcase to support or demonize. In fact, during my visit, people were more interested in talking about the Detroit Lakes trolls that have garnered some national and international attention. President-elect Donald Trump overwhelmingly carried Becker County, of which Detroit Lakes sits as the county seat. Incumbent U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar easily retained her seat, even though her Republican challenger Royce White trounced her in Becker County. As for the single statewide ballot question, the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund renewal won more than 70% of the votes cast in Becker County. Why does that matter? On this beautiful September weekend, a Minnesota community was open, welcoming, vibrant and fun for visitors and residents alike. Political differences didn’t serve as a moat or electric fence as they sometimes seem to do. In an email Stearns sent me in August after reading in my inaugural Strib column that I had registered for the Beardsley race, she wrote: “In Detroit Lakes, we firmly believe in casting a wide net and rising above any political divides. We understand that we all have chosen to live in this gorgeous lake area and that we need to pull together to make our small town the BEST place to live. “Yes, of course, our neighbors don’t always vote the way [we do], but we also know that they love a cold beverage, great conversation, delicious food, and a sunset pontoon cruise. These things are universal.” Stearns and her husband have offered me a standing invitation back to their place for dinner, disproving the maxim that Minnesota Nice stops at the entrance to one’s home. The important state and local conversations that Stearns references are the same ones we at the Minnesota Star Tribune are committed to embracing. In the coming year, we on the opinion staff intend to keep a much closer eye on state government. We will consistently examine and reflect on how the actions of elected officials affect us all. We’ll also remain vigilantly mindful of overarching issues that bind us as one state — as opposed to a collection of red, blue or purple counties. We‘ll continue to expand our Strib Voices roster, composed of recognized and emerging important voices from around Minnesota. This will allow us to continue to position ourselves as the state’s water cooler, regardless of the part of Minnesota you call home. We are also continuing to grow and calibrate our Editorial Board to focus more tightly on the Minnesota ecosystem. Our primary aim is to provide actionable commentary based on Star Tribune investigations and familiarity with the institutions and agencies that guide policy. Political parties who have promised to hire thousands of extra gardaí need to confront ‘an uncomfortable truth’ about the garda ‘recruitment and retention crisis’, the president of the group representing rank-and-file officers said this weekend. Garda Representative Association president Mark O’Meara was speaking as all the main political parties vowed in their manifestos to significantly bolster An Garda Síochána. Labour has pledged to increase garda numbers to 18,000; Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil have promised 6,000 and 5,000 new recruits respectively; while Sinn Féin said it will oversee ‘the largest garda recruitment drive in the history of the State’ if voted into power. However, despite previous commitments to increase policing numbers, garda management has struggled to stem the tide of officers quitting the force. Figures provided by Justice Minister Helen McEntee to Independent TD Violet-Anne Wynne confirm more than 1,200 gardaí have retired since 2020. Writing in today’s Irish Mail on Sunday, Mr O’Meara said the force is ‘facing a recruitment and retention crisis’ that needs to be addressed. ‘The uncomfortable truth is that garda numbers have not increased one jot since 14,000 in 2010 while the population has increased over 15% during the same timeframe,’ he said, adding this points to ‘systemic, consecutive failures in policies and decisions to try and boost garda numbers’. Responding to political promises to significantly increase garda numbers, Mr O’Meara said: ‘We have listened to various promises of thousands of extra gardaí but with little explanation of how this could be achieved.’ He added that, to attract more people to a career with An Garda Síochána, ‘you have to significantly improve the working pay, pensions and conditions of the job itself’. He said existing officers need to ‘feel more appreciated and supported to convince them to stay on’. To address the policing shortfall, Dublin City councillor Mannix Flynn called on Ms McEntee to provide incentives to gardaí who retired in recent years to return to the force. The Independent Dublin Bay South General Election candidate said such a move would help combat what he described as the ‘flight of talent and experience from the force’. He told the MoS it would not be a case of ‘trying to force anyone to come back or to increase the retirement age,’ but rather looking to change ‘outmoded ways of doing things’. He added: ‘Retired gardaí need not come back full-time, but we have a lot of young officers who could do with guidance on what life is really like on the beat. Gardaí could come back in an advisory capacity and pass on the knowledge they have accumulated over decades.’ In response to parliamentary queries from Ms Wynne, Ms McEntee confirmed the number of officers retiring from the force has steadily increased from 250 in 2020 to 293 in 2021, rising to 340 in 2022 and 319 last year. Commenting on the desire of many retiring gardaí to stay in the force, Ms McEntee said: ‘At the beginning of September, the Government increased the age of retirement from 60 to 62. ‘This means that gardaí who wish to work on to 62 may do so. Government took this decision on foot of a request from the Garda Commissioner [Drew Harris] and the Garda Associations. ‘It is clear that there is a real appetite for this in An Garda Síochána. Since 2020, my department has processed almost 180 requests for retirement extensions. Increasing the mandatory retirement age reflects the reality that people can and want to work in their chosen careers for longer.’ Meanwhile, gardaí yesterday confirmed they have removed four more images of ‘persons of interest’ from a public gallery of 99 suspects who may have taken past in the riots in Dublin city centre last November. On the first anniversary of the November 23 riots, a garda spokesperson said: ’56 images of “persons of interest” have now been removed from the public gallery overall.’ The purpose of the publication was to either rule individuals ‘in or out’ of and progress the investigative process, the spokesperson stated.

The Arab Union for International Exhibitions and Conferences (AUIEC) announced during its recent meeting in Cairo the launch of a major exhibition for Arab industries, set to take place in Iraq in 2025. This initiative underscores the Union’s dedication to fostering Arab industrial collaboration and enhancing trade across the region. According to Mahmoud Jarrah, Secretary-General of AUIEC, the exhibition will serve as a comprehensive platform to showcase cutting-edge industrial products and technologies from Arab countries. It will highlight the vast potential of Arab industries across various sectors while promoting intra-Arab trade and facilitating the exchange of expertise and innovation. Jarrah outlined several key goals for the exhibition: In tandem with the exhibition, AUIEC will organize an intensive training course on event and exhibition management. The program will target exhibition organizers from various Arab countries, aiming to enhance their professional skills and capacity to deliver world-class events. Jarrah also issued a warning about fraudulent activities by entities impersonating the Union. He urged companies and institutions to verify information through official AUIEC channels to avoid falling victim to scams. The Secretary-General extended an open invitation to Arab industrial companies and institutions to participate in this landmark event. He emphasized the importance of collaboration to ensure the exhibition’s success, calling for support and the provision of necessary resources. Earlier this month, Jarrah led a delegation to visit the Food Africa and Pacprocess exhibitions. He noted these events demonstrate the potential for Arab countries to host world-class exhibitions, citing Egypt’s success in attracting nearly 1,000 local and international exhibitors. This upcoming exhibition in Iraq is positioned to further cement the region’s reputation as a hub for industrial innovation and trade. The AUIEC’s announcement reflects a strategic vision for Arab industrial advancement, offering unparalleled opportunities for businesses to network, expand their reach, and contribute to regional economic growth.Trump offers support for dockworkers union by saying ports shouldn’t install more automated systems

I f 2024 was the year of large language models (LLMs), then 2025 looks like the year of AI “agents”. These are quasi-intelligent systems that harness LLMs to go beyond their usual tricks of generating plausible text or responding to prompts. The idea is that an agent can be given a high-level – possibly even vague – goal and break it down into a series of actionable steps. Once it “understands” the goal, it can devise a plan to achieve it, much as a human would. OpenAI’s chief financial officer, Sarah Friar, recently explained it thus to the Financial Times : “It could be a researcher, a helpful assistant for everyday people, working moms like me. In 2025, we will see the first very successful agents deployed that help people in their day to day.” Or it’s like having a digital assistant “that doesn’t just respond to your instructions but is able to learn, adapt, and perhaps most importantly, take meaningful actions to solve problems on your behalf” . In other words, Miss Moneypenny on steroids. So why are these automated Moneypennys suddenly seen as the next big thing? Could it have something to do with the fact that the tech industry has spent trillions of dollars building colossal LLMs with – as yet – no plausible return on that investment in sight? That’s not to say that LLMs are useless; for people whose work involves language they can be really helpful. And computer programmers find them very useful. But for many industries, at the moment they still look like a solution in search of a problem. The arrival of AI agents may change that. Using LLMs as the basic building-blocks of virtual agents that can efficiently carry out many of the complex task-sequences that constitute “work” in organisations everywhere might prove irresistible. Or so the tech industry thinks. And so, of course, does McKinsey, the mega-consultancy that provides the subliminal hymn sheet from which CEOs invariably sing. Agentic AI, burbles McKinsey , “is moving from thought to action” as “AI-enabled ‘agents’ that use foundation models to execute complex, multistep workflows across a digital world” get adopted. If that is indeed what is going to happen, then we may need to rethink our assumptions about how AI will change the world. At the moment we are mostly obsessed about what the technology will do to either individuals or humanity (or both). But if McKinsey & Co are right then the more profound longer-term impact might come through the way AI agents change corporations – which, after all, are really machines for managing complexity and turning information into decisions. The political scientist Henry Farrell, an astute observer of these things, has sussed this possibility. LLMs, he argues , “are engines for summarising and making useful vast amounts of information”. Since information is the fuel on which large corporations run, they will adopt any technology that provides a more intelligent and contextual way of handling information – as opposed to the mere data that they currently process . So, says Farrell, corporations “will deploy LLMs in ways that seem dull and technical, except to those immediately implicated for better or worse, but that are actually important. Big organisations shape our lives! As they change, so will our lives change, in a myriad of unexciting seeming but significant ways.” At one point in his essay, Farrell likens this “dull and technical” transformative impact of LLMs to the way the humble spreadsheet reshaped large organisations. This provoked a genteel outburst from Dan Davies, an economist and former stock analyst whose book The Unaccountability Machine was one of the nicest surprises of this year. He points out that spreadsheets “made a whole new style of working possible for the financial industry in two ways”. First, it enabled the creation of much bigger and more detailed financial models, and therefore a different way of budgeting, compiling business plans, assessing investment options, etc. And second, the technology enabled one to work iteratively. “Rather than thinking about what assumptions made the most business sense, then sitting down to project them, Excel [Microsoft’s spreadsheet product] encouraged you to just set out the forecasts, then sit around tweaking the assumptions up and down until you got an answer you could live with. Or, for that matter, an answer that your boss could live with.” The moral of that story is clear. The spreadsheet was a revolutionary technology when it first appeared in 1978, just as ChatGPT was in 2022. But now it’s a routine, integral part of organisation life. The advent of AI “agents” built from GPT-like models looks like following a similar pattern. In turn, the organisations that have absorbed them will also evolve. And then the world may eventually rediscover that famous adage attributed to Marshall McLuhan’s colleague John Culkin: “We shape our tools and then the tools shape us.” Talking economics Transcript of a fascinating interview with the remarkable economist Ha-Joon Chang, on economics, pluralism and democracy. Israel cracks down on Palestinian citizens who speak out against the war in Gaza UMM AL-FAHM, Israel (AP) — In the year since the war in Gaza broke out, Israel's government has been cracking down on dissent among its Palestinian citizens. Authorities have charged Palestinians with “supporting terrorism” because of posts online or for demonstrating against the war. Activists and rights watchdogs say Palestinians have also lost jobs, been suspended from schools and faced police interrogations. Palestinians make up about 20% of Israel's population. Many feel forced to self-censor out of fear of being jailed and further marginalized in society. Others still find ways to dissent, but carefully. Israel's National Security Ministry counters that, “Freedom of speech is not the freedom to incite.” Israel says rabbi who went missing in the UAE was killed TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Israel says the body of an Israeli-Moldovan rabbi who went missing in the United Arab Emirates has been found, citing Emirati authorities. The statement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office on Sunday said Zvi Kogan was killed, calling it a “heinous antisemitic terror incident.” It said: “The state of Israel will act with all means to seek justice with the criminals responsible for his death." Kogan went missing on Thursday, and there were suspicions he had been kidnapped. His disappearance comes as Iran has been threatening to retaliate against Israel after the two countries traded fire in October. Hezbollah fires more than 180 rockets and other projectiles into Israel, wounding at least 7 BEIRUT (AP) — Hezbollah has fired at least 185 rockets and other projectiles into Israel, wounding seven people in the militant group's heaviest barrage in several days. The attacks in northern and central Israel happened Sunday in response to deadly Israeli strikes in central Beirut on Saturday. Meanwhile, negotiators pressed on with cease-fire efforts to halt the all-out war. Lebanon's military says an Israeli strike on a Lebanese army center in the southwest killed one soldier and wounded 18 others. Israel's military has expressed regret and said its operations are directed solely against the militants. Lebanon’s caretaker prime minister condemned the latest strike as an assault on the U.S.-led cease-fire efforts. The rising price of paying the national debt is a risk for Trump's promises on growth and inflation WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump has big plans for the economy. He also has big debt problem that'll be a hurdle to delivering on those plan. Trump has bold ambitions on tax cuts, tariffs and other programs. But high interest rates and the price of repaying the federal government’s existing debt could limit what he’s able to do. The federal debt stands at roughly $36 trillion, and the spike in inflation after the pandemic has pushed up the government’s borrowing costs such that debt service next year will easily exceed spending on national security. After Trump's Project 2025 denials, he is tapping its authors and influencers for key roles WASHINGTON (AP) — During the campaign, President-elect Donald Trump had hailed what would become Project 2025 as a conservative roadmap for “exactly what our movement will do." Trump pulled an about-face when Project 2025 became a political liability. He denied knowing anything about the “ridiculous and abysmal” plans, even though some were written by his former aides and many allies. Now, after winning the 2024 election, Trump is stocking his second administration with key players in the effort he temporarily shunned. Trump has tapped Russell Vought for an encore as director of the Office of Management and Budget; Tom Homan, his former immigration chief, as “border czar;” and immigration hardliner Stephen Miller as deputy chief of policy. But it’s a far-from-perfect arrangement, with many parties still unsatisfied but hopeful that the deal will be a step in the right direction. Japan holds Sado mines memorial despite South Korean boycott amid lingering historical tensions SADO, Japan (AP) — Japan has held a memorial ceremony near the Sado Island Gold Mines despite a last-minute boycott of the event by South Korea that highlighted tensions between the neighbors over the brutal wartime use of Korean laborers. South Korea’s absence at Sunday’s memorial, to which Seoul government officials and Korean victims’ families were invited, is a major setback in the rapidly improving ties between the countries. The Sado mines were listed in July as a UNESCO World Heritage Site after Japan moved past years of disputes with South Korea and reluctantly acknowledged the mines’ dark history. Matt Gaetz, pushing the fate of any resolution to the yearslong investigation of sexual misconduct allegations into further uncertainty. Matt Gaetz talks before President-elect Donald Trump speaks during an America First Policy Institute gala at his Mar-a-Lago estate Nov. 14 in Palm Beach, Fla. The nearly party-line votes came after Democrats had been pressing for the findings to be published even though the Florida Republican left Congress and withdrew as President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for attorney general. Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Calif., was the sole Republican to support the effort. Most Republicans have argued that any congressional probe into Gaetz ended when he resigned from the House. Speaker Mike Johnson also requested that the committee not publish its report, saying it would be a terrible precedent to set. While ethics reports have previously been released after a member’s resignation, it is extremely rare. People are also reading... Sean Casten, D-Ill., who introduced one of the bills to force the release, said that if Republicans reject the release, they will have “succeeded in sweeping credible allegations of sexual misconduct under the rug.” Gaetz has repeatedly denied the claims. Earlier Thursday, the Ethics panel met to discuss the Gaetz report but made no decision, saying in a short statement that the matter is still being discussed. It's unclear now whether the document will ever see the light of day as lawmakers have only a few weeks left before a new session of Congress begins. It's the culmination of weeks of pressure on the Ethics committee's five Republicans and five Democrats who mostly work in secret as they investigate allegations of misconduct against lawmakers. The status of the Gaetz investigation became an open question last month when he abruptly resigned from Congress after Trump's announcement that he wanted his ally in the Cabinet. It is standard practice for the committee to end investigations when members of Congress depart, but the circumstances surrounding Gaetz were unusual, given his potential role in the new administration. Rep. Michael Guest, R-Miss., the committee chairman, said Wednesday that there is no longer the same urgency to release the report given that Gaetz has left Congress and stepped aside as Trump's choice to head the Justice Department. “I’ve been steadfast about that. He’s no longer a member. He is no longer going to be confirmed by the Senate because he withdrew his nomination to be the attorney general,” Guest said. The Gaetz report has also caused tensions between lawmakers on the bipartisan committee. Pennsylvania Rep. Susan Wild, the top Democrat on the panel, publicly admonished Guest last month for mischaracterizing a previous meeting to the press. Gaetz has denied any wrongdoing and said last year that the Justice Department’s separate investigation against him into sex trafficking allegations involving underage girls ended without federal charges. His onetime political ally Joel Greenberg, a fellow Republican who served as the tax collector in Florida’s Seminole County, admitted as part of a plea deal with prosecutors in 2021 that he paid women and an underage girl to have sex with him and other men. The men were not identified in court documents when he pleaded guilty. Greenberg was sentenced in late 2022 to 11 years in prison. Here are the people Trump picked for key positions so far President-elect Donald Trump Among President-elect Donald Trump's picks are Susie Wiles for chief of staff, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio for secretary of state, former Democratic House member Tulsi Gabbard for director of national intelligence and Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz for attorney general. Susie Wiles, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, 67, was a senior adviser to Trump's 2024 presidential campaign and its de facto manager. Marco Rubio, Secretary of State Trump named Florida Sen. Marco Rubio to be secretary of state, making a former sharp critic his choice to be the new administration's top diplomat. Rubio, 53, is a noted hawk on China, Cuba and Iran, and was a finalist to be Trump's running mate on the Republican ticket last summer. Rubio is the vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee and a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. “He will be a strong Advocate for our Nation, a true friend to our Allies, and a fearless Warrior who will never back down to our adversaries,” Trump said of Rubio in a statement. The announcement punctuates the hard pivot Rubio has made with Trump, whom the senator called a “con man" during his unsuccessful campaign for the 2016 GOP presidential nomination. Their relationship improved dramatically while Trump was in the White House. And as Trump campaigned for the presidency a third time, Rubio cheered his proposals. For instance, Rubio, who more than a decade ago helped craft immigration legislation that included a path to citizenship for people in the U.S. illegally, now supports Trump's plan to use the U.S. military for mass deportations. Pete Hegseth, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, 44, is a co-host of Fox News Channel’s “Fox & Friends Weekend” and has been a contributor with the network since 2014, where he developed a friendship with Trump, who made regular appearances on the show. Hegseth lacks senior military or national security experience. If confirmed by the Senate, he would inherit the top job during a series of global crises — ranging from Russia’s war in Ukraine and the ongoing attacks in the Middle East by Iranian proxies to the push for a cease-fire between Israel, Hamas and Hezbollah and escalating worries about the growing alliance between Russia and North Korea. Hegseth is also the author of “The War on Warriors: Behind the Betrayal of the Men Who Keep Us Free,” published earlier this year. Pam Bondi, Attorney General Trump tapped Pam Bondi, 59, to be attorney general after U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz withdrew his name from consideration. She was Florida's first female attorney general, serving between 2011 and 2019. She also was on Trump’s legal team during his first impeachment trial in 2020. Considered a loyalist, she served as part of a Trump-allied outside group that helped lay the groundwork for his future administration called the America First Policy Institute. Bondi was among a group of Republicans who showed up to support Trump at his hush money criminal trial in New York that ended in May with a conviction on 34 felony counts. A fierce defender of Trump, she also frequently appears on Fox News and has been a critic of the criminal cases against him. Kristi Noem, Secretary of Homeland Security Trump picked South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, a well-known conservative who faced sharp criticism for telling a story in her memoir about shooting a rambunctious dog, to lead an agency crucial to the president-elect’s hardline immigration agenda. Noem used her two terms leading a tiny state to vault to a prominent position in Republican politics. South Dakota is usually a political afterthought. But during the COVID-19 pandemic, Noem did not order restrictions that other states had issued and instead declared her state “open for business.” Trump held a fireworks rally at Mount Rushmore in July 2020 in one of the first large gatherings of the pandemic. She takes over a department with a sprawling mission. In addition to key immigration agencies, the Department of Homeland Security oversees natural disaster response, the U.S. Secret Service, and Transportation Security Administration agents who work at airports. Doug Burgum, Secretary of the Interior The governor of North Dakota, who was once little-known outside his state, Burgum is a former Republican presidential primary contender who endorsed Trump, and spent months traveling to drum up support for him, after dropping out of the race. Burgum was a serious contender to be Trump’s vice presidential choice this summer. The two-term governor was seen as a possible pick because of his executive experience and business savvy. Burgum also has close ties to deep-pocketed energy industry CEOs. Trump made the announcement about Burgum joining his incoming administration while addressing a gala at his Mar-a-Lago club, and said a formal statement would be coming the following day. In comments to reporters before Trump took the stage, Burgum said that, in recent years, the power grid is deteriorating in many parts of the country, which he said could raise national security concerns but also drive up prices enough to increase inflation. “There's just a sense of urgency, and a sense of understanding in the Trump administration,” Burgum said. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. ran for president as a Democrat, than as an independent, and then endorsed Trump . He's the son of Democratic icon Robert Kennedy, who was assassinated during his own presidential campaign. The nomination of Kennedy to lead the Department of Health and Human Services alarmed people who are concerned about his record of spreading unfounded fears about vaccines . For example, he has long advanced the debunked idea that vaccines cause autism. Scott Bessent, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, 62, is a former George Soros money manager and an advocate for deficit reduction. He's the founder of hedge fund Key Square Capital Management, after having worked on-and-off for Soros Fund Management since 1991. If confirmed by the Senate, he would be the nation’s first openly gay treasury secretary. He told Bloomberg in August that he decided to join Trump’s campaign in part to attack the mounting U.S. national debt. That would include slashing government programs and other spending. “This election cycle is the last chance for the U.S. to grow our way out of this mountain of debt without becoming a sort of European-style socialist democracy,” he said then. Lori Chavez-DeRemer, Labor Secretary Oregon Republican U.S. Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer narrowly lost her reelection bid this month, but received strong backing from union members in her district. As a potential labor secretary, she would oversee the Labor Department’s workforce, its budget and put forth priorities that impact workers’ wages, health and safety, ability to unionize, and employer’s rights to fire employers, among other responsibilities. Chavez-DeRemer is one of few House Republicans to endorse the “Protecting the Right to Organize” or PRO Act would allow more workers to conduct organizing campaigns and would add penalties for companies that violate workers’ rights. The act would also weaken “right-to-work” laws that allow employees in more than half the states to avoid participating in or paying dues to unions that represent workers at their places of employment. Scott Turner, Housing and Urban Development Scott Turner is a former NFL player and White House aide. He ran the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council during Trump’s first term in office. Trump, in a statement, credited Turner, the highest-ranking Black person he’s yet selected for his administration, with “helping to lead an Unprecedented Effort that Transformed our Country’s most distressed communities.” Sean Duffy, Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy is a former House member from Wisconsin who was one of Trump's most visible defenders on cable news. Duffy served in the House for nearly nine years, sitting on the Financial Services Committee and chairing the subcommittee on insurance and housing. He left Congress in 2019 for a TV career and has been the host of “The Bottom Line” on Fox Business. Before entering politics, Duffy was a reality TV star on MTV, where he met his wife, “Fox and Friends Weekend” co-host Rachel Campos-Duffy. They have nine children. Chris Wright, Secretary of Energy A campaign donor and CEO of Denver-based Liberty Energy, Write is a vocal advocate of oil and gas development, including fracking — a key pillar of Trump’s quest to achieve U.S. “energy dominance” in the global market. Wright also has been one of the industry’s loudest voices against efforts to fight climate change. He said the climate movement around the world is “collapsing under its own weight.” The Energy Department is responsible for advancing energy, environmental and nuclear security of the United States. Wright also won support from influential conservatives, including oil and gas tycoon Harold Hamm. Hamm, executive chairman of Oklahoma-based Continental Resources, a major shale oil company, is a longtime Trump supporter and adviser who played a key role on energy issues in Trump’s first term. Linda McMahon, Secretary of Education President-elect Donald Trump tapped billionaire professional wrestling mogul Linda McMahon to be secretary of the Education Department, tasked with overseeing an agency Trump promised to dismantle. McMahon led the Small Business Administration during Trump’s initial term from 2017 to 2019 and twice ran unsuccessfully as a Republican for the U.S. Senate in Connecticut. She’s seen as a relative unknown in education circles, though she expressed support for charter schools and school choice. She served on the Connecticut Board of Education for a year starting in 2009 and has spent years on the board of trustees for Sacred Heart University in Connecticut. Brooke Rollins, Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins, who graduated from Texas A&M University with a degree in agricultural development, is a longtime Trump associate who served as White House domestic policy chief during his first presidency. The 52-year-old is president and CEO of the America First Policy Institute, a group helping to lay the groundwork for a second Trump administration. She previously served as an aide to former Texas Gov. Rick Perry and ran a think tank, the Texas Public Policy Foundation. Howard Lutnick, Secretary of Commerce Trump chose Howard Lutnick, head of brokerage and investment bank Cantor Fitzgerald and a cryptocurrency enthusiast, as his nominee for commerce secretary, a position in which he'd have a key role in carrying out Trump's plans to raise and enforce tariffs. Trump made the announcement Tuesday on his social media platform, Truth Social. Lutnick is a co-chair of Trump’s transition team, along with Linda McMahon, the former wrestling executive who previously led Trump’s Small Business Administration. Both are tasked with putting forward candidates for key roles in the next administration. The nomination would put Lutnick in charge of a sprawling Cabinet agency that is involved in funding new computer chip factories, imposing trade restrictions, releasing economic data and monitoring the weather. It is also a position in which connections to CEOs and the wider business community are crucial. Doug Collins, Secretary of Veterans Affairs Doug Collins is a former Republican congressman from Georgia who gained recognition for defending Trump during his first impeachment trial, which centered on U.S. assistance for Ukraine. Trump was impeached for urging Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden in 2019 during the Democratic presidential nomination, but he was acquitted by the Senate. Collins has also served in the armed forces himself and is currently a chaplain in the United States Air Force Reserve Command. "We must take care of our brave men and women in uniform, and Doug will be a great advocate for our Active Duty Servicemembers, Veterans, and Military Families to ensure they have the support they need," Trump said in a statement about nominating Collins to lead the Department of Veterans Affairs. Karoline Leavitt, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, 27, was Trump's campaign press secretary and currently a spokesperson for his transition. She would be the youngest White House press secretary in history. The White House press secretary typically serves as the public face of the administration and historically has held daily briefings for the press corps. Leavitt, a New Hampshire native, was a spokesperson for MAGA Inc., a super PAC supporting Trump, before joining his 2024 campaign. In 2022, she ran for Congress in New Hampshire, winning a 10-way Republican primary before losing to Democratic Rep. Chris Pappas. Leavitt worked in the White House press office during Trump's first term before she became communications director for New York Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik, Trump's choice for U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. Tulsi Gabbard, National Intelligence Director Former Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard has been tapped by Trump to be director of national intelligence, keeping with the trend to stock his Cabinet with loyal personalities rather than veteran professionals in their requisite fields. Gabbard, 43, was a Democratic House member who unsuccessfully sought the party's 2020 presidential nomination before leaving the party in 2022. She endorsed Trump in August and campaigned often with him this fall. “I know Tulsi will bring the fearless spirit that has defined her illustrious career to our Intelligence Community,” Trump said in a statement. Gabbard, who has served in the Army National Guard for more than two decades, deploying to Iraq and Kuwait, would come to the role as somewhat of an outsider compared to her predecessor. The current director, Avril Haines, was confirmed by the Senate in 2021 following several years in a number of top national security and intelligence positions. John Ratcliffe, Central Intelligence Agency Director Trump has picked John Ratcliffe, a former Texas congressman who served as director of national intelligence during his first administration, to be director of the Central Intelligence Agency in his next. Ratcliffe was director of national intelligence during the final year and a half of Trump's first term, leading the U.S. government's spy agencies during the coronavirus pandemic. “I look forward to John being the first person ever to serve in both of our Nation's highest Intelligence positions,” Trump said in a statement, calling him a “fearless fighter for the Constitutional Rights of all Americans” who would ensure “the Highest Levels of National Security, and PEACE THROUGH STRENGTH.” Kash Patel, Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Kash Patel spent several years as a Justice Department prosecutor before catching the Trump administration’s attention as a staffer on Capitol Hill who helped investigate the Russia probe. Patel called for dramatically reducing the agency’s footprint, a perspective that sets him apart from earlier directors who sought additional resources for the bureau. Though the Justice Department in 2021 halted the practice of secretly seizing reporters’ phone records during leak investigations, Patel said he intends to aggressively hunt down government officials who leak information to reporters. Lee Zeldin, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Trump has chosen former New York Rep. Lee Zeldin to serve as his pick to lead the Environmental Protection Agency . Zeldin does not appear to have any experience in environmental issues, but is a longtime supporter of the former president. The 44-year-old former U.S. House member from New York wrote on X , “We will restore US energy dominance, revitalize our auto industry to bring back American jobs, and make the US the global leader of AI.” “We will do so while protecting access to clean air and water,” he added. During his campaign, Trump often attacked the Biden administration's promotion of electric vehicles, and incorrectly referring to a tax credit for EV purchases as a government mandate. Trump also often told his audiences during the campaign his administration would “Drill, baby, drill,” referring to his support for expanded petroleum exploration. In a statement, Trump said Zeldin “will ensure fair and swift deregulatory decisions that will be enacted in a way to unleash the power of American businesses, while at the same time maintaining the highest environmental standards, including the cleanest air and water on the planet.” Brendan Carr, Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission Trump has named Brendan Carr, the senior Republican on the Federal Communications Commission, as the new chairman of the agency tasked with regulating broadcasting, telecommunications and broadband. Carr is a longtime member of the commission and served previously as the FCC’s general counsel. He has been unanimously confirmed by the Senate three times and was nominated by both Trump and President Joe Biden to the commission. Carr made past appearances on “Fox News Channel," including when he decried Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris' pre-Election Day appearance on “Saturday Night Live.” He wrote an op-ed last month defending a satellite company owned by Trump supporter Elon Musk. Paul Atkins, Chair of the Securities and Exchange Commission Trump said Atkins, the CEO of Patomak Partners and a former SEC commissioner, was a “proven leader for common sense regulations.” In the years since leaving the SEC, Atkins has made the case against too much market regulation. “He believes in the promise of robust, innovative capital markets that are responsive to the needs of Investors, & that provide capital to make our Economy the best in the World. He also recognizes that digital assets & other innovations are crucial to Making America Greater than Ever Before,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. The commission oversees U.S. securities markets and investments and is currently led by Gary Gensler, who has been leading the U.S. government’s crackdown on the crypto industry. Gensler, who was nominated by President Joe Biden, announced last month that he would be stepping down from his post on the day that Trump is inaugurated — Jan. 20, 2025. Atkins began his career as a lawyer and has a long history working in the financial markets sector, both in government and private practice. In the 1990s, he worked on the staffs of two former SEC chairmen, Richard C. Breeden and Arthur Levitt. Jared Isaacman, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman, 41, is a tech billionaire who bought a series of spaceflights from Elon Musk’s SpaceX and conducted the first private spacewalk . He is the founder and CEO of a card-processing company and has collaborated closely with Musk ever since buying his first chartered SpaceX flight. He took contest winners on that 2021 trip and followed it in September with a mission where he briefly popped out the hatch to test SpaceX’s new spacewalking suits. Elise Stefanik, Ambassador to the United Nations Rep. Elise Stefanik is a representative from New York and one of Trump's staunchest defenders going back to his first impeachment. Elected to the House in 2014, Stefanik was selected by her GOP House colleagues as House Republican Conference chair in 2021, when former Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney was removed from the post after publicly criticizing Trump for falsely claiming he won the 2020 election. Stefanik, 40, has served in that role ever since as the third-ranking member of House leadership. Stefanik’s questioning of university presidents over antisemitism on their campuses helped lead to two of those presidents resigning, further raising her national profile. If confirmed, she would represent American interests at the U.N. as Trump vows to end the war waged by Russia against Ukraine begun in 2022. He has also called for peace as Israel continues its offensive against Hamas in Gaza and its invasion of Lebanon to target Hezbollah. Matt Whitaker, Ambassador to NATO President-elect Donald Trump says he's chosen former acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker to serve as U.S. ambassador to NATO. Trump has expressed skepticism about the Western military alliance for years. Trump said in a statement Wednesday that Whitaker is “a strong warrior and loyal Patriot” who “will ensure the United States’ interests are advanced and defended” and “strengthen relationships with our NATO Allies, and stand firm in the face of threats to Peace and Stability.” The choice of Whitaker as the nation’s representative to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is an unusual one, given his background is as a lawyer and not in foreign policy. David Perdue, Ambassador to China President-elect Donald Trump tapped former Sen. David Perdue of Georgia to be ambassador to China, saying in a social media post that the former CEO “brings valuable expertise to help build our relationship with China.” Perdue lost his Senate seat to Democrat Jon Ossoff four years ago and ran unsuccessfully in a primary against Republican Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp. Perdue pushed Trump's debunked lies about electoral fraud during his failed bid for governor. Mike Huckabee, Ambassador to Israel Trump will nominate former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee to be ambassador to Israel. Huckabee is a staunch defender of Israel and his intended nomination comes as Trump has promised to align U.S. foreign policy more closely with Israel's interests as it wages wars against the Iran-backed Hamas and Hezbollah. “He loves Israel, and likewise the people of Israel love him,” Trump said in a statement. “Mike will work tirelessly to bring about peace in the Middle East.” Huckabee, who ran unsuccessfully for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008 and 2016, has been a popular figure among evangelical Christian conservatives, many of whom support Israel due to Old Testament writings that Jews are God’s chosen people and that Israel is their rightful homeland. Trump has been praised by some in this important Republican voting bloc for moving the U.S. embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Steven Witkoff, Special Envoy to the Middle East Trump on Tuesday named real estate investor Steven Witkoff to be special envoy to the Middle East. The 67-year-old Witkoff is the president-elect's golf partner and was golfing with him at Trump's club in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Sept. 15, when the former president was the target of a second attempted assassination. Witkoff “is a Highly Respected Leader in Business and Philanthropy,” Trump said of Witkoff in a statement. “Steve will be an unrelenting Voice for PEACE, and make us all proud." Trump also named Witkoff co-chair, with former Georgia Sen. Kelly Loeffler, of his inaugural committee. Keith Kellogg, Special Envoy for Ukraine and Russia Trump said Wednesday that he will nominate Gen. Keith Kellogg to serve as assistant to the president and special envoy for Ukraine and Russia. Kellogg, a retired Army lieutenant general who has long been Trump’s top adviser on defense issues, served as National Security Advisor to Trump's former Vice President Mike Pence. For the America First Policy Institute, one of several groups formed after Trump left office to help lay the groundwork for the next Republican administration, Kellogg in April wrote that “bringing the Russia-Ukraine war to a close will require strong, America First leadership to deliver a peace deal and immediately end the hostilities between the two warring parties.” (AP Photo/Mariam Zuhaib) Mike Waltz, National Security Adviser Trump asked Rep. Michael Waltz, R-Fla., a retired Army National Guard officer and war veteran, to be his national security adviser, Trump announced in a statement Tuesday. The move puts Waltz in the middle of national security crises, ranging from efforts to provide weapons to Ukraine and worries about the growing alliance between Russia and North Korea to the persistent attacks in the Middle East by Iran proxies and the push for a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas and Hezbollah. “Mike has been a strong champion of my America First Foreign Policy agenda,” Trump's statement said, "and will be a tremendous champion of our pursuit of Peace through Strength!” Waltz is a three-term GOP congressman from east-central Florida. He served multiple tours in Afghanistan and also worked in the Pentagon as a policy adviser when Donald Rumsfeld and Robert Gates were defense chiefs. He is considered hawkish on China, and called for a U.S. boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing due to its involvement in the origin of COVID-19 and its mistreatment of the minority Muslim Uighur population. Stephen Miller, Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy Stephen Miller, an immigration hardliner , was a vocal spokesperson during the presidential campaign for Trump's priority of mass deportations. The 39-year-old was a senior adviser during Trump's first administration. Miller has been a central figure in some of Trump's policy decisions, notably his move to separate thousands of immigrant families. Trump argued throughout the campaign that the nation's economic, national security and social priorities could be met by deporting people who are in the United States illegally. Since Trump left office in 2021, Miller has served as the president of America First Legal, an organization made up of former Trump advisers aimed at challenging the Biden administration, media companies, universities and others over issues such as free speech and national security. Tom Homan, ‘Border Czar’ Thomas Homan, 62, has been tasked with Trump’s top priority of carrying out the largest deportation operation in the nation’s history. Homan, who served under Trump in his first administration leading U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, was widely expected to be offered a position related to the border, an issue Trump made central to his campaign. Though Homan has insisted such a massive undertaking would be humane, he has long been a loyal supporter of Trump's policy proposals, suggesting at a July conference in Washington that he would be willing to "run the biggest deportation operation this country’s ever seen.” Democrats have criticized Homan for his defending Trump's “zero tolerance” policy on border crossings during his first administration, which led to the separation of thousands of parents and children seeking asylum at the border. Billy Long, Internal Revenue Service commissioner Former Rep. Billy Long represented Missouri in the U.S. House from 2011 to 2023. Since leaving Congress, Trump said, Long “has worked as a Business and Tax advisor, helping Small Businesses navigate the complexities of complying with the IRS Rules and Regulations.” Kelly Loeffler, Small Business Administration administrator Former Georgia Sen. Kelly Loeffler was appointed in January 2020 by Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp and then lost a runoff election a year later. She started a conservative voter registration organization and dived into GOP fundraising, becoming one of the top individual donors and bundlers to Trump’s 2024 comeback campaign. Even before nominating her for agriculture secretary, the president-elect already had tapped Loeffler as co-chair of his inaugural committee. Dr. Mehmet Oz, Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz, 64, is a former heart surgeon who hosted “The Dr. Oz Show,” a long-running daytime television talk show. He ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate as the Republican nominee in 2022 and is an outspoken supporter of Trump, who endorsed Oz's bid for elected office. Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to advise White House on government efficiency Elon Musk, left, and Vivek Ramaswamy speak before Republican presidential nominee former President Donald Trump at an Oct. 27 campaign rally at Madison Square Garden in New York. Trump on Tuesday said Musk and former Republican presidential candidate Ramaswamy will lead a new “Department of Government Efficiency" — which is not, despite the name, a government agency. The acronym “DOGE” is a nod to Musk's favorite cryptocurrency, dogecoin. Trump said Musk and Ramaswamy will work from outside the government to offer the White House “advice and guidance” and will partner with the Office of Management and Budget to “drive large scale structural reform, and create an entrepreneurial approach to Government never seen before.” He added the move would shock government systems. It's not clear how the organization will operate. Musk, owner of X and CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has been a constant presence at Mar-a-Lago since Trump won the presidential election. Ramaswamy suspended his campaign in January and threw his support behind Trump. Trump said the two will “pave the way for my Administration to dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies.” Russell Vought, Office of Management and Budget Russell Vought held the position during Trump’s first presidency. After Trump’s initial term ended, Vought founded the Center for Renewing America, a think tank that describes its mission as “renew a consensus of America as a nation under God.” Vought was closely involved with Project 2025, a conservative blueprint for Trump’s second term that he tried to distance himself from during the campaign. Vought has also previously worked as the executive and budget director for the Republican Study Committee, a caucus for conservative House Republicans. He also worked at Heritage Action, the political group tied to The Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank. Additional selections to the incoming White House Dan Scavino, deputy chief of staff Scavino, whom Trump's transition referred to in a statement as one of “Trump's longest serving and most trusted aides,” was a senior adviser to Trump's 2024 campaign, as well as his 2016 and 2020 campaigns. He will be deputy chief of staff and assistant to the president. Scavino had run Trump's social media profile in the White House during his first administration. He was also held in contempt of Congress in 2022 after a month-long refusal to comply with a subpoena from the House committee’s investigation into the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. James Blair, deputy chief of staff Blair was political director for Trump's 2024 campaign and for the Republican National Committee. He will be deputy chief of staff for legislative, political and public affairs and assistant to the president. Blair was key to Trump's economic messaging during his winning White House comeback campaign this year, a driving force behind the candidate's “Trump can fix it” slogan and his query to audiences this fall if they were better off than four years ago. Taylor Budowich, deputy chief of staff Budowich is a veteran Trump campaign aide who launched and directed Make America Great Again, Inc., a super PAC that supported Trump's 2024 campaign. He will be deputy chief of staff for communications and personnel and assistant to the president. Budowich also had served as a spokesman for Trump after his presidency. Jay Bhattacharya, National Institutes of Health Trump has chosen Dr. Jay Bhattacharya to lead the National Institutes of Health. Bhattacharya is a physician and professor at Stanford University School of Medicine, and is a critic of pandemic lockdowns and vaccine mandates. He promoted the idea of herd immunity during the pandemic, arguing that people at low risk should live normally while building up immunity to COVID-19 through infection. The National Institutes of Health funds medical research through competitive grants to researchers at institutions throughout the nation. NIH also conducts its own research with thousands of scientists working at its labs in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Marty Makary, Food and Drug Administration Makary is a Johns Hopkins surgeon and author who argued against pandemic lockdowns. He routinely appeared on Fox News during the COVID-19 pandemic and wrote opinion articles questioning masks for children. He cast doubt on vaccine mandates but supported vaccines generally. Makary also cast doubt on whether booster shots worked, which was against federal recommendations on the vaccine. Dr. Janette Nesheiwat, Surgeon General Nesheiwat is a general practitioner who serves as medical director for CityMD, a network of urgent care centers in New York and New Jersey. She has been a contributor to Fox News. Dr. Dave Weldon, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Weldon is a former Florida congressman who recently ran for a Florida state legislative seat and lost; Trump backed Weldon’s opponent. In Congress, Weldon weighed in on one of the nation’s most heated debates of the 1990s over quality of life and a right-to-die and whether Terri Schiavo, who was in a persistent vegetative state after cardiac arrest, should have been allowed to have her feeding tube removed. He sided with the parents who did not want it removed. Jamieson Greer, U.S. trade representative Kevin Hassett, Director of the White House National Economic Council Trump is turning to two officials with experience navigating not only Washington but the key issues of income taxes and tariffs as he fills out his economic team. He announced he has chosen international trade attorney Jamieson Greer to be his U.S. trade representative and Kevin Hassett as director of the White House National Economic Council. While Trump has in several cases nominated outsiders to key posts, these picks reflect a recognition that his reputation will likely hinge on restoring the public’s confidence in the economy. Trump said in a statement that Greer was instrumental in his first term in imposing tariffs on China and others and replacing the trade agreement with Canada and Mexico, “therefore making it much better for American Workers.” Hassett, 62, served in the first Trump term as chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers. He has a doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania and worked at the right-leaning American Enterprise Institute before joining the Trump White House in 2017. sports festival
sports festival Harrison Ford was de-aged last year for “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” on the big screen, and video game makers are pulling the same trick for the whip-cracking hero’s latest outing on the small screen. “Let me tell you what you are missing, Dr Jones,” sneers a bespectacled Nazi to the archaeologist adventurer, buried up to his neck in sand, in the trailer for “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle”. A few seconds later, the Nazi gets a crisp headbutt, and strains of the famous theme tune hustle in. The creators of the game, released on Monday, are thrusting players back to the time period of the first Indiana Jones film, “Raiders of the Lost Ark”. The baddies are familiar, as are the settings and trappings - ancient structures peeking out of the jungle, flame-lit caverns filled with booty, rickety rope bridges over snow-covered ravines. And players get to inhabit the hero in the first person, in all his youthful splendor. The creators knew the main challenge would be to produce a convincing young hero. And unlike the rest of the cast in the game, Indy could not be created by 3D scanning an actor. “We didn’t have an opportunity to travel back in time and scan a young Harrison Ford,” said Axel Torvenius, creative director at MachineGames. Torvenius said Ford’s characterization was pieced together with the help of unreleased archive material from the original film. “We’ve been looking at photos of Harrison Ford to try to make sure that we hit the correct facial feature that he had at that time,” he said. “Having the opportunity to get access to their archive has been invaluable to be able to create the 3D mesh of Indiana Jones’ character.” ‘Immense’ pressure The game, which took four years to develop, sees the archaeologist solving puzzles while getting tangled up in chases and fights. Set in 1937, it follows Indy from the Vatican to China via Egypt in pursuit of a mysterious power coveted by Nazi spies. “The Great Circle” is far from the first game to tackle Indy’s story. More than a dozen adaptations have been made over the last four decades. Knowing full well how protective gamers can be over titles they grew up with, the Swedish studio felt a huge responsibility to get the game right. “The pressure has been immense,” said Torvenius, adding that his team had done their best to recreate the style and ambience set by Steven Spielberg, director of the original movie. Game designer Jens Andersson agreed, adding that he was a huge fan of the point-and-click Indiana Jones adventure games from the 1990s. “All these things are inspirations for what we’re doing here,” he said. “Those were a product of their times and we need to do something new with it.” — AFPUS stocks experience mixed fortunes on quiet day of tradingGlobal Times: People's Daily article says favorable conditions for China's economic development remain unchanged

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council is refreshing its Climate Change and Air Quality Strategy, which was first adopted in 2021. The update aims to build on the achievements made so far, as the council approaches its target to become carbon neutral by December 2025. These ambitious targets were set when the council declared a climate emergency in 2019. The initial proposals for updating the strategy will be developed in the coming months, as the council collaborates with experts, community groups, councillors, businesses, and regional and national organisations. This initiative began with councillors on the council’s environment and infrastructure committee sharing their views at a meeting on Thursday, December 5. The public and organisations will have the chance to express their opinions on the borough’s proposed approach and ambitions for reaching net zero in a public consultation next summer. This feedback will help shape the final version of the strategy, which will be considered for adoption by councillors at the end of next year. Cllr Chris Tomblin, cabinet member for the climate and ecological emergency, said: "We’ve made tremendous progress under our current climate strategy, shrinking this council’s carbon footprint by around two-thirds and cutting the borough’s emissions by almost a fifth since our emergency declaration back in 2019. "But while the aim of this council being carbon neutral by next December is firmly in reach, we need everyone who lives and works in Basingstoke and Deane to do much more for the borough to achieve its climate change target at the end of the decade." Cllr Tomblin also highlighted the need for collective action to achieve the borough's net zero target. He said: "But cutting the hundreds of thousands of tonnes of emissions necessary to make our borough net zero would require substantial action including by us, the Government, businesses, and our communities. "This would need to include insulating thousands of homes and creating hundreds of new vehicle chargers every year, to name just two possible actions." He also stressed the importance of considering the emerging opportunities and challenges for reducing carbon presented by low-emission technologies and several significant updates to national policies, including planning and recycling, since the strategy was adopted three and a half years ago.The space entrepreneur Elon Musk is unlikely to receive government security clearances if he so applied, even as his SpaceX launch company blasts military and spy agency payloads into orbit, according to a report on Monday. The billionaire, a close ally of Donald Trump , who is set to join the incoming administration as an efficiency expert and recently became the first person to exceed $400bn in self-made personal wealth, is reported by the Wall Street Journal to have been advised by SpaceX lawyers not to seek highest-level security clearances owing to personal drug use and contacts with foreign nationals. Musk currently holds a “top-secret” clearance that took years to obtain after he discussed use of marijuana on a 2018 podcast with Joe Rogan, according to the outlet. But that may not be enough to have access to information about US government payloads in his rockets. Typically, candidates undergoing federal security screenings by the department of defense may not receive clearance if the agency expresses concerns about drug or alcohol use, criminal conduct, psychological conditions, sexual behavior or allegiance to the US. According to the Journal, Musk’s lawyers outlined scenarios in which he might inadvertently disclose secrets to foreign officials with whom he regularly speaks, including the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, with whom he is reported to have been in regular contact since 2022. Musk’s use of another semi-legal drug, ketamine, in pursuit of what friends call “pure creativity”, along with reports of LSD, ecstasy and magic mushrooms, could also be an issue. Musk lawyers told the Journal there had been “false facts” in a WSJ report about Musk’s drug patterns and he was “regularly and randomly drug tested at SpaceX and has never failed a test”. SpaceX lawyers and executives reportedly concluded that if the company sought a higher level of clearance than Musk currently holds, he risked being turned down and potentially stripped of the clearances he currently holds. But the Journal noted that the issue could become irrelevant when Trump returns to the White House next month. Musk donated about $200m to Trump’s re-election effort and has been tapped to lead a government body that Trump says he will create – the “department of government efficiency” – that Musk says could strip $2tn from the federal budget. As co-head of Doge with the biotech company founder Vivek Ramaswamy, Musk could be given access to classified information directly by the sitting president. Trump has not said publicly if he plans to do that. While “top secret” is the government’s top level of security clearance, rising above “confidential” and “secret”, it does not automatically confer special authorization access to classified programs. More than 400 SpaceX employees have permissions to access “sensitive compartmented information”, but not the company CEO, according to the outlet. A smaller number of employees have access to secrets the government deems even more sensitive called special access programs, including SpaceX’s spy satellite program, called Starshield. As it stands, Musk is not entitled to enter SpaceX facilities where such classified work is done and discussed, and is denied access to classified elements of payloads. The company recently signed a $1.8bn classified contract with the national reconnaissance office, the agency that operates spy satellites, among other, pre-existing government contracts. Musk, however, appears unfazed. At a Pennsylvania town hall in October, where he revealed that he had top-secret clearance, he told attendees in typical Musk fashion that “most of the stuff that I’m aware of ... the reason to keep it top secret is it’s so boring. “We don’t want to give exact instructions on how to make a nuclear bomb or something like that, but unless there’s a genuine risk to the country, all the information in the government should be public,” he added.

A poll of 56 leaders and chief executives of key charity and not-for-profit organisations found 37 per cent were more uncertain about their body's future than three years ago. Only 55 per cent of respondents to the survey, conducted by Piazza Research in September, were somewhat or highly confident their organisation's future was in hand. The findings signalled a need for stronger government support, said the Community Council of Australia which commissioned the report. "When more than a third of charities are talking about having an uncertain future, you're highlighting a high level of unmet need," chair Tim Costello said. "That can only mean frustration for charities and the communities they serve." Some 93 per cent of respondents expect the cost of their operations to worsen over the next year. Among the biggest challenges identified are competition for resources such as funding, skilled staff, and volunteers (73 per cent), economic downturns (71 per cent), environmental factors including climate change and natural disasters (56 per cent) and social and demographics trends (52 per cent). There was some hope of technological advancements (27 per cent) and positive attitude shifts from funders (16 per cent) but they were outweighed by broader concerns. The sector employs more than 1.4 million Australians, mobilises 3.5 million volunteers and turns over more than $200 billion each year. Some charities might have to consider withdrawing some of their services to survive, the council's chief executive David Crosbie said. "For years charities have been saying the real costs of providing services to our communities is much higher than the funding being provided," he said. "This new research reinforces previous findings that the biggest issue confronting charities is the lack of support to meet rising costs and increasing demand." The Salvation Army is one charity in particular that is feeling the heat of surging demand amid the festive season. A separate poll of 2004 people by Pureprofile on behalf of the Salvos suggests 6.3 million Australians (29.9 per cent) will struggle to pay their rent or mortgage this Christmas. More than one in three (35.8 per cent) of those surveyed said they will have less people over on Christmas Day due to the cost-of-living crisis and 9.3 per cent are reaching out to charity for help this Christmas, including 54 per cent for the first time. Major Bruce Harmer said the charity had never seen such volume and widespread need across the country in its 140-year history. "It is truly heartbreaking to see the despair and devastating decisions Australians are having to make in order to provide for their families this Christmas," he said. "As we see the devastating results of this research, we are reminded that every number and statistic represents real people, and we see that every day of the year amongst those who reach out to the Salvos for support."

In late October, India and China finalized a deal to pull back troops from two key Himalayan flashpoints in eastern Ladakh. This was a welcome reprieve after over 20 rounds of often lackluster, grim-appearing negotiations and no letup in Chinese transgressions (for example, in Tawang and Barahoti ). Soon after the agreement was reached, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met at the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, and signaled their evolving political intent for “peace and stability” after maintaining a cold shoulder for almost half a decade. A formal dialogue had eluded them since the much-hyped but ultimately deceptive meeting in Mamallapuram in October 2019. These signs of an apparent thaw have sent political commentators into a tizzy. The new announcement appeared jarring to some, mainly because a month earlier, in September, Modi was hobnobbing with the outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden in his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware for the all-important Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (the Quad comprising Australia, India, Japan, and the U.S.) leaders’ summit – a mainstay for the four members and other stakeholders’ Indo-Pacific visions and strategies. For China, the Quad is a true embodiment of the U.S.-led Indo-Pacific construct. Beijing’s perception of the grouping has evolved from dismissing it as easily dissipated “ sea foam ” to seeing the Quad as an “ anti-China ” bloc fostering regional divisiveness. India’s precarious China-U.S. balancing act will get a fresh twist in the coming months with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, who, in his first term as president, famously got along with strongman Modi, reportedly having picked well-known “China hawks” for top diplomatic roles in his incoming administration. India’s diplomatic prescience, or at least deftness, becomes all the more vital when viewed through the prism of global leaders (from Europe to East Asia ) who have proclaimed the accelerating trends toward multipolarity – a multipolar Asia and world ranks high among India’s foreign policy priorities, too. So does the China-India thaw, along with India’s redoubled participation in China-dominant non-Western forums like the newly expanded BRICS summit, indicate India’s intention to reduce its tilt to the West, particularly the United States? And more importantly, what does this mean for India and its Indo-Pacific priorities? India’s priorities for the Indo-Pacific order align with its outlook that a multipolar Asia is the best paradigm for peace and stability. In that vision, an economically developed and strong India is critical. It is precisely this dual track of a multipolar Indo-Pacific and a strong India that the country pursues across virtually all wind directions and strategic sectors. In the Tussle for Multi/Bipolarity, the Indo-Pacific Remains the Focus In the growing bipolar dynamics between the United States and China amid the high stakes high-tech rivalry, India’s attempts toward a “multi-aligned” strategic rebalancing are gaining ground. Even though China is still India’s top trading partner , the former is a continuing perceived threat along the Himalayan border and in the maritime domain, particularly in the Indian Ocean region (IOR), the recent thaw notwithstanding. As a result, as part of its objective to strengthen itself, India has solidified its technological, defense, and security ties with China’s primary rival, the United States. Be it launching the Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology ( iCET ) and the India-U.S. Defense Acceleration Ecosystem ( INDUS-X ), expanding bilateral and multilateral maritime exercises, building a joint semiconductor fabrication plant, conducting collaborative research in the outer space sector, creating critical minerals supply chains , or cooperating on emerging digital technologies in Asia and Africa, the U.S. has in the Biden years perhaps become India’s most valuable partnership. Indeed, as a coercive actor in the region and a (perceived) threat to India, China has been a central aspect of this partnership. At the same time, India has diversified its engagements by strengthening economic and trade, diplomatic, digital (including critical technologies such as semiconductors), and maritime security cooperation with various countries. Mainly, India has actively pursued ties with “like-minded” Indo-Pacific stakeholders. India has tightened cooperation with partners like Australia, the European Union, European major powers like France, Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, and the U.K.; Japan, the Philippines, South Korea (though ties have not fulfilled their potential despite much ado), and Vietnam. India has also reached out to technological superpower Taiwan, although that marks a redline with China, and so the budding strategic outreach would be tricky. This pursuit of varied partners – all efforts to promote multipolarity – is as much to counter the bipolar compulsions due to the China-U.S. rivalry as to counter China’s growing footprint in India’s backyard of South Asia and the IOR. Europe Is a Flourishing and Fast-Growing Pivot In that vein, India’s still-evolving outreach to various parts of Europe, including the EU and its members, and recent concerted wooing of Southeast Asian states like Singapore and the relevant regional multilateral organizations are particularly noteworthy among India’s outreach activities. As China’s growing coercion against states, including in Europe and Asia, has intensified, European partners, particularly the EU, have looked to strengthen their Indo-Pacific strategies. India has seized the moment to become Europe’s top priority. India has boosted its links to all parts of Europe through high-level engagements, including Modi’s visits to Italy, Poland, Greece, Ukraine, Austria, and Denmark (for the Nordic summit ), to name a few in the last couple of years. Notably, India’s diplomacy is not limited just to the traditional partnerships, say with France or Germany – although the latter have not lost space in India’s diplomacy, as is evident from German Chancellor Olaf Scholz ’s recent India visit, for example. The results have been mixed. The launch of the Trade and Technology Council (TTC) has been historic, and enhanced coordination, including new collaborations (for example, on recycling e-vehicle batteries ), has come up. New high-tech-oriented economic ties, including on semiconductors , with the EU will also enable India to give impetus to its economic superpower potential . Moreover, India has been able to push for connectivity initiatives via the EU’s Global Gateway, including the collaboration with the European Investment Bank (EIB). Yet, as the ongoing negotiations for the India-EU free trade agreement (FTA) suggest, more must be done to mitigate fundamental differences and boost political will. Notably, India needs to work with the EU, a reliable bloc with high-tech capabilities, on climate action and innovation and regional economic integration in India’s immediate neighborhood and Southeast Asia, where China has tremendous clout. This will benefit the partners economically and strengthen the Indo-Pacific order without resorting to obvious moralizing. But the Core Lies in Modi’s Southeast Asia Pitch Since his first term of “Acting East,” Modi has been vocally ambitious about Southeast Asia, even if linkages may not have lived up to his vision yet. Modi sought to primarily draw on the historical and cultural linkages between South Asia (south India) and Southeast Asia. The two regions, however, famously lack integration despite booming potential – as per a 2022 World Bank report , trade linkages between the two subregions grew about nine-fold over the past two decades, from $38 billion in 2000 to $349 billion in 2018. As a dialogue partner and comprehensive strategic partner of the the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), as well as an East Asia Summit ( EAS ) member, India has been constantly championing ASEAN centrality in its Indo-Pacific outlook on order. Yet the potential has not been fully tapped . Nonetheless, Modi’s recent visits to Singapore and Brunei highlighted good tidings regarding future-oriented diplomatic, economic, and strategic ties between India and ASEAN states in the Indo-Pacific. In Brunei , India upgraded ties, deepening cooperation in defense, trade, investment, technology, renewables, climate change, and regional security avenues. In Singapore , the so-called gateway to Southeast Asia, India showcased that its ambition to build itself as a manufacturing hub in the new digital era would necessitate strategically incorporating Southeast Asian states into the mix, as evidenced by the India-Singapore Semiconductor Ecosystem Partnership. Moreover, Vietnam and the Philippines’ upswing in defense cooperation with India, including arms sales, indicates that bonding over the perceived threat from China as a common factor will impact their ties going forward. India’s tacit support of the Philippines and evolution in its South China Sea stance highlight the regional “ convergence of interests ,” particularly India’s growing stress on the maritime domain of the Indo-Pacific. Building Tricky Bridges? Notably, Modi, in recent times, has also shown a penchant for embracing contrasting worldviews. He has courted Russian President Vladimir Putin and extended a historic outreach to Ukraine by visiting the two warring states back to back. The former move expectedly drew criticism in Kyiv and the West, but the overall strategy has, to an extent, worked for India. It is important to note that amid the geopolitical contest between Russia and the West, India has not isolated Russia as a vital partner. At the same time, India’s relationship with Russia is not a strategic priority , “with the primary focus instead being strategic maintenance rather than elevating relations.” In West Asia, too, although commentators have called out India for tacitly backing Israel under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Modi has equally reached out to the Palestinian leadership . Undoubtedly, India’s engagement with Israel has, in the last decade, become well-rounded (from defense to innovation), without New Delhi shying away from showcasing its interests beyond the ideological . Yet, the political tightrope has not been discarded: there is continued emphasis on a “two-state solution,” ceasefire, and a return to diplomacy and dialogue. Moreover, India’s ties with the other states of West Asia are historically high, from the cross-sectoral comprehensive strategic partnership with the UAE to India and Iran signing a 10-year deal on Chabahar despite India’s potential risk of embroiling in U.S. sanctions. With China having expanded its strategic footprint in West Asia (exemplified by the brokering of the Iran-Saudi Arabia deal), India has displayed more foresight in multipolarizing this region. India’s Strategy Makes Sense Keeping Trump’s last term and his “ transactional diplomacy ” in mind, it is apparent that the push for multilateralism seen in Biden’s term (“ restoring American engagement internationally ”) will give way to enhanced focus on bilateralism and minilateralism – championing the values of the so-called “ multilateralism à la carte .” Even as India has been a fervent proponent of effective multilateralism via reforms in multilateral institutions, a minilateral approach suits India just fine. For example, India has effectively utilized the Quad – rejuvenated under Trump 1.0 – to expand its global profile and provide momentum for developing a credible security mechanism in the Indo-Pacific. Flexible arrangements like the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity ( IPEF ), which is not an FTA, have also allowed India to push for interests-based goals such as strengthening supply chains , while opting out of the IPEF’s trade pillar. At the same time, India’s proactive participation in U.S.-led initiatives like Quad and non-Western forums like BRICS – the latter are expanding amid a void of functioning multilateralism – ultimately highlights its broadened appeal. Against that overall scenario, a question also arises: whether India will be willing to leverage its new apparent softening toward China – another strong Global South leader with a broader appeal – as part of India’s deft balancing act between the West/North and the East/South. It is clear that the China-India hostilities are unlikely to cease, nor is India’s aversion to Xi’s controversial mega-project of the Belt and Road Initiative going to change. Nonetheless, that the two regional rivals have already cooperated as founding members of the China-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), among other fora, highlights the unpredictability and flexibility of global transactional politics. Trump’s reemergence will only strengthen such maneuvers. By and large, India’s approaches to fostering the Indo-Pacific order align with its outlook that a multipolar Indo-Pacific that includes a strong India is the bedrock for peace and stability. In that vein, India’s modus operandi blends realpolitik and flexible diplomacy – and who could fault that? President of Turkmenistan received representatives of US business delegation

TORONTO (AP) — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told that Americans would also suffer if the president-elect follows through on a , a Canadian minister who attended their recent dinner said Monday. Trump if they don’t stop what he called the flow of drugs and migrants across their borders with the United States. He said on social media last week that he would impose a 25% tax on as one of his first executive orders. Canadian Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc, whose responsibilities include border security, attended a dinner with Trump and Trudeau at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club on Friday. Trudeau requested the meeting in that the northern border is . “The prime minister of course spoke about the importance of protecting the Canadian economy and Canadian workers from tariffs, but we also discussed with our American friends the negative impact that those tariffs could have on their economy, on affordability in the United States as well,” LeBlanc said in Parliament. If Trump on everything imported from Mexico and Canada, with his campaign promise to give American families a break from inflation. Economists say companies would have little choice but to pass along the added costs, for food, clothing, automobiles, alcohol and other goods. The Produce Distributors Association, a Washington trade group, said last week that tariffs will raise prices for fresh fruit and vegetables and hurt U.S. farmers when the countries retaliate. Canada is already tariffs on certain items from the U.S. should Trump follow through on the threat. After his dinner with Trump, returned home without assurances the president-elect will back away from threatened tariffs on all products from the major American trading partner. Trump called the talks “productive” but signaled no retreat from a pledge that Canada says unfairly lumps it in with Mexico over the flow of drugs and migrants into the United States. “The idea that we came back empty handed is completely false,” LeBlanc said. “We had a very productive discussion with Mr. Trump and his future Cabinet secretaries. ... The commitment from Mr. Trump to continue to work with us was far from empty handed.” Joining Trump and Trudeau at dinner were Howard Lutnick, Trump’s nominee for commerce secretary, North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, Trump’s pick to lead the Interior Department, and Mike Waltz, Trump’s choice to be his national security adviser. Canada’s ambassador to the U.S., Kirsten Hillman, told The Associated Press on Sunday that “the message that our border is so vastly different than the Mexican border was really understood.” Hillman, who sat at an adjacent table to Trudeau and Trump, said Canada is not the problem when it comes to drugs and migrants. On Monday, Mexico’s president rejected those comments. “Mexico must be respected, especially by its trading partners,” President Claudia Sheinbaum said. She said Canada had its own problems with fentanyl consumption and “could only wish they had the cultural riches Mexico has.” Related Articles Flows of migrants and seizures of drugs at the two countries’ border are vastly different. U.S. customs agents seized 43 pounds of fentanyl at the Canadian border during the last fiscal year, compared with 21,100 pounds at the Mexican border. Most of the fentanyl reaching the U.S. — where it causes about 70,000 overdose deaths annually — is using precursor chemicals smuggled from Asia. On immigration, the U.S. Border Patrol reported 1.53 million encounters with migrants at the southwest border with Mexico between October 2023 and September 2024. That compares to 23,721 encounters at the Canadian border during that time. Canada is the top export destination for 36 U.S. states. Nearly $3.6 billion Canadian (US$2.7 billion) worth of goods and services cross the border each day. About 60% of U.S. crude oil imports are from Canada, and 85% of U.S. electricity imports as well. Canada is also the largest foreign supplier of steel, aluminum and uranium to the U.S. and has 34 critical minerals and metals that the Pentagon is eager for and investing for national security.None

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — Russian state news agencies are reporting that ousted Syrian President Bashar Assad has arrived in Moscow with his family and given asylum. The agencies, Tass and RIA, cited an unidentified Kremlin source. The Associated Press was not immediately able to verify the reports but has contacted the Kremlin for comment. RIA also cited an anonymous Kremlin source that Moscow had received guarantees from Syrian insurgents of the security of Russian military bases and diplomatic posts in Syria. The report did not give further details. Assad reportedly left Syria early Sunday. Syrians have been pouring into streets echoing with celebratory gunfire after a stunning rebel advance reached the capital, ending the Assad family’s 50 years of iron rule . THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. AP’s earlier story follows below. DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — Syrians poured into streets echoing with celebratory gunfire on Sunday after a stunning rebel advance reached the capital, ending the Assad family's 50 years of iron rule but raising questions about the future of the country and the wider region. Joyful crowds gathered in squares in Damascus, waving the Syrian revolutionary flag in scenes that recalled the early days of the Arab Spring uprising, before a brutal crackdown and the rise of an insurgency plunged the country into a nearly 14-year civil war. Others gleefully ransacked the presidential palace and residence after President Bashar Assad and other top officials vanished, their whereabouts unknown. Russia, a close ally, said Assad left the country after negotiations with rebel groups and had given instructions to transfer power peacefully. Abu Mohammed al-Golani , a former al-Qaida commander who cut ties with the group years ago and says he embraces pluralism and religious tolerance, leads the biggest rebel faction and is poised to chart the country's future. In his first public appearance since fighters entered the Damascus suburbs Saturday, al-Golani visited the sprawling Umayyad Mosque and called Assad's fall “a victory to the Islamic nation.” Calling himself by his given name, Ahmad al-Sharaa, and not his nom de guerre, he told hundreds of people that Assad had made Syria “a farm for Iran’s greed.” The rebels face the daunting task of healing bitter divisions in a country ravaged by war and still split among armed factions. Turkey-backed opposition fighters are battling U.S.-allied Kurdish forces in the north, and the Islamic State group is still active in some remote areas. Syrian state television broadcast a rebel statement early Sunday saying Assad had been overthrown and all prisoners had been released. They called on people to preserve the institutions of “the free Syrian state.” The rebels later announced a curfew in Damascus from 4 p.m. to 5 a.m. The rebels said they freed people held at the notorious Saydnaya prison, where rights groups say thousands were tortured and killed . A video circulating online purported to show rebels breaking open cell doors and freeing dozens of female prisoners, many of whom appeared shocked. At least one small child was seen among them. “This happiness will not be completed until I can see my son out of prison and know where is he,” said one relative, Bassam Masr. "I have been searching for him for two hours. He has been detained for 13 years.” Rebel commander Anas Salkhadi later appeared on state TV and sought to reassure Syria's religious and ethnic minorities, saying: “Syria is for everyone, no exceptions. Syria is for Druze, Sunnis, Alawites, and all sects.” “We will not deal with people the way the Assad family did," he added. Celebrations in the capital Damascus residents prayed in mosques and celebrated in squares, calling, “God is great.” People chanted anti-Assad slogans and honked car horns. Teenage boys picked up weapons apparently discarded by security forces and fired into the air. Revelers filled Umayyad Square, where the Defense Ministry is located. Some waved the three-starred Syrian flag that predates the Assad government and was adopted by the revolutionaries. Elsewhere, many parts of the capital were empty and shops were closed. Soldiers and police left their posts and fled, and looters broke into the Defense Ministry. Videos showed families wandering the presidential palace, some carrying stacks of plates and other household items. “It’s like a dream. I need someone to wake me up," said opposition fighter Abu Laith, adding the rebels were welcomed in Damascus with “love.” At the Justice Ministry, where rebels stood guard, Judge Khitam Haddad said they were protecting documents from the chaos. Outside, some residents sought information about relatives who disappeared under Assad. The rebels “have felt the pain of the people,” said one woman, giving only her first name, Heba. She worried about possible revenge killings by the rebels, many of whom appeared to be underage. Syria’s al-Watan newspaper, which was historically pro-government, wrote: “We are facing a new page for Syria. We thank God for not shedding more blood.” It added that media workers should not be blamed for publishing past government statements, saying it “only carried out the instructions.” A statement from the Alawite sect that has formed the core of Assad's base called on young Syrians to be “calm, rational and prudent and not to be dragged into what tears apart the unity of our country.” The rebels mainly come from the Sunni Muslim majority in Syria, which also has sizable Druze, Christian and Kurdish communities. In Qamishli in the northeast, a Kurdish man slapped a statue of the late leader Hafez Assad with his shoe. Assad's whereabouts are unknown Syrian Prime Minister Mohammed Ghazi Jalali said the government was ready to “extend its hand” to the opposition and turn its functions over to a transitional government. A video shared on Syrian opposition media showed armed men escorting him from his office and to the Four Seasons hotel on Sunday. Rami Abdurrahman of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights told The Associated Press that Assad, 59, took a flight early Sunday from Damascus. A senior diplomat from the United Arab Emirates, which had sought to rehabilitate Assad's image and has welcomed high-profile exiles in recent years, declined to comment on his whereabouts. Anwar Gargash said Assad's destination at this point is a “footnote in history,” comparing it to the long exile of German Kaiser Wilhelm II after World War I. Calls for an orderly transition The rebel advances since Nov. 27 were the largest in recent years, and saw the cities of Aleppo, Hama and Homs fall within days as the Syrian army melted away. Russia, Iran and Lebanon's Hezbollah militant group, which provided crucial support to Assad throughout the uprising, abandoned him as they reeled from other conflicts. The end of Assad’s rule was a major blow to Iran and its allies, already weakened by conflict with Israel . Iran, which had strongly backed him throughout the civil war, said Syrians should decide their future “without destructive, coercive, foreign intervention.” The Iranian Embassy in Damascus was ransacked after apparently having been abandoned. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu meanwhile said Israeli troops had seized a buffer zone in the Golan Heights established in 1974, saying it was to protect Israeli residents after Syrian troops abandoned positions. Israel's military later warned residents of five southern Syria communities to stay home for their safety, and didn’t respond to questions. Israel captured the Golan in the 1967 Mideast war and later annexed it. The international community, except for the United States, views it as occupied, and the Arab League on Sunday condemned what it called Israel’s efforts to take advantage of Assad’s downfall occupy more territory. The rebels are led by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group, or HTS , which has its origins in al-Qaida and is considered a terrorist organization by the United States and the United Nations. Al-Golani, has sought to recast the group as a moderate and tolerant force. “Golani has made history and sparked hope among millions of Syrians," said Dareen Khalifa, a senior adviser with the International Crisis Group. "But he and the rebels now face a formidable challenge ahead.” The U.N.’s special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, called Saturday for urgent talks in Geneva to ensure an “orderly political transition.” The Gulf nation of Qatar, a key regional mediator, hosted an emergency meeting of foreign ministers and top officials from eight countries with interests in Syria late Saturday. They included Iran, Saudi Arabia, Russia and Turkey. Majed al-Ansari, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, said they agreed on the need “to engage all parties on the ground," including the HTS, and that the main concern is “stability and safe transition.” ___ Sewell reported from Beirut. Top officials from all the Chesapeake Bay states and the federal government gathered in Annapolis Tuesday to reiterate their commitment to cleaning up the historically and economically critical estuary and strengthening the decade-long partnership that has helped improved the Bay’s health — even if that progress hasn’t been as swift and consistent as they might have hoped. Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D), seated next to Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R), with Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) participating by video, convened the annual meeting of the Chesapeake Bay Executive Council, which consists of leaders of the six states in the Bay watershed, along with the District of Columbia, to retool their 10-year-old cooperative agreement at a critical juncture in the Bay cleanup. The meeting comes just weeks before the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump, who unsuccessfully tried to eliminate funding for Bay programs during his first term, adding an element of uncertainty for the Chesapeake’s state-based environmental stewards. But officials from red and blue states described their allegiance to the Bay cleanup as durable and unshakable Tuesday. Moore called the Bay “the greatest heirloom clearly we have,” saying, “We did not create it. We inherited it. So it’s up to us to protect it.” He also outlined legislation that he plans to introduce during the 2025 General Assembly session to strengthen Bay health, which he is tentatively calling the Bay Legacy Act. The original multistate partnership, fashioned by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 2014 during the Obama administration, laid out 31 goals for the Bay states and D.C. to meet by 2025. While some states have fallen short of hitting some of the marks, federal and state officials describe the program — and particularly the sense of partnership it has engendered — as an overwhelming success. “The goals don’t need to be changed,” Youngkin said. “We just need more time to achieve them.” The state and federal leaders did vote Tuesday to revise the watershed agreement , taking several recommendations from a steering committee of numerous stakeholders that has been meeting for more than two years. Some of the proposed changes seek to streamline the way data is collected and analyzed, and also try to heighten accountability in Bay cleanup efforts. One proposal would place more emphasis on habitat rehabilitation throughout the Bay watershed, while another would spotlight climate impacts in the government’s ongoing scientific inquiry. The Chesapeake Bay Program is also going to create an Agricultural Advisory Committee, to elevate the priorities of a sector that’s critical to Bay health — and a huge economic driver in the region — before the executive council. “This allows farmers to make improvements while preserving the viability of their businesses,” Youngkin said. The agriculture committee will complement the work of the Local Government Advisory Committee , Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee and Stakeholders Advisory Committee . Every speaker during the public meeting Tuesday — including environmental agency officials from D.C., Delaware, West Virginia and New York, and two high-ranking EPA officials — emphasized the importance of the ongoing partnership between the states and the federal government. “The Chesapeake Bay has always been our region’s greatest unifier, and we just saw that bipartisan support for the Bay is alive and well,” said Hilary Harp Falk, president and CEO of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. “It’s a really big deal when three governors and leaders from around the region meet to stack hands and reaffirm commitments to clean water. This kind of local and state leadership is more critical than ever.” Such cooperation hasn’t always been the case. In 2020, Maryland, Virginia and D.C. filed a federal lawsuit against the Trump administration’s EPA, accusing the agency of violating the Clean Water Act by failing to enforce Chesapeake Bay pollution reduction limits for Pennsylvania and New York. During his speech Tuesday — he was supposed to attend the meeting in person, but was sidelined by the heavy fog that blanketed the Mid-Atlantic — Shapiro acknowledged that his state had been lagging on its commitment to Bay cleanup goals until recent years. “It is important for me to participate in this conversation, because for a long time, Pennsylvania was on the sidelines and now we’re in the game,” he said. And in another sign of interstate collegiality, Youngkin nominated Moore to serve another year as chair of the executive council. Asked after the meeting about the potential impact of the incoming Trump administration on Bay cleanup efforts, Moore reiterated the states’ commitment to working together. “We all collectively understand the importance of this work,” he said, adding, “We look forward to working with the new administration to ensure that our goals are met.” Moore’s Bay Legacy Act Moore, from the dais of Tuesday’s meeting, offered broad details of the legislation he’s planning to introduce in the upcoming legislative session on Bay health. Those plans were fleshed out slightly by administration officials in interviews Tuesday. They said the bill, tentatively called the Bay Legacy Act, would: Seek to increase regenerative farming practices in the state, particularly on land owned by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR), in part by offering long-term leases to farmers to encourage them to regenerate the soil;Improve aquaculture permitting in the state; andStrengthen water-quality monitoring programs within DNR, largely by establishing new protocols that would make it easier for the agency to work with other entities and “citizen scientists” who conduct water quality tests of their own. Administration officials said more details on the proposed legislation could be released in a matter of days. “We are going to continue to move forward and move fast in this state,” Moore said, “because that is what the people of Maryland demand and require.” Maryland Matters is part of States Newsroom, a nonprofit news network supported by grants and a coalition of donors as a 501c(3) public charity. This holiday season, just show up, for others, for the downtrodden, for yourself.SAN DIEGO , Dec. 10, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Robbins LLP reminds investors that a class action was filed on behalf of persons and entities who purchased or otherwise acquired Match Group, Inc. ( NASDAQ : MTCH ) securities between May 2, 2023 and November 6, 2024 . Match Group, through its portfolio companies, is a leading provider of digital technologies designed to help people make meaningful connections. For more information, submit a form , email attorney Aaron Dumas, Jr. , or give us a call at (800) 350-6003. The Allegations: Robbins LLP is Investigating Allegations that Match Group, Inc. (MTCH) Misled Investors Regarding its Business Prospects According to the complaint, on November 6, 2024 , Match Group published its Q3 2024 shareholder letter, disclosing that Tinder's monthly active user count was down 9% in Q3, which was the same rate of decline as in Q2, falling short of expectations for continued improvement. Further, Match Group's revenue per payer grew less than expected and some new features tested with Tinder users in the quarter negatively impacted subscription revenue, which the company said will likely also have an impact on fourth quarter revenue. Plaintiff alleges that Match Group materially understated the challenges affecting Tinder and, as a result, understated the risk that Tinder's monthly active user count would not recover by the time the Company reported its financial results for the third quarter of 2024. On this news, the price of Match stock fell by $6.77 per share, or 17.8%, to close at $31.11 per share on November 7, 2024 . What Now : You may be eligible to participate in the class action against Match Group, Inc. Shareholders who want to serve as lead plaintiff for the class must submit their application to the court by January 24, 2025 . A lead plaintiff is a representative party who acts on behalf of other class members in directing the litigation. You do not have to participate in the case to be eligible for a recovery. If you choose to take no action, you can remain an absent class member. For more information, click here . All representation is on a contingency fee basis. Shareholders pay no fees or expenses. Grand Strategy | How minilateralism is reshaping global order

Nearly 1 million Afghan refugees return home in eight monthsAmazon now makes some of its chips: “ Amazon ’s cloud computing arm Amazon Web Services Tuesday announced plans for an “Ultracluster,” a massive AI supercomputer made up of hundreds of thousands of its homegrown Trainium chips, as well as a new server, the latest efforts by its AI chip design lab based in Austin, Texas. The chip cluster will be used by the AI startup Anthropic, in which the retail and cloud-computing giant recently invested an additional $4 billion.“ -WSJ Apple to use its own modem on some products: “ Apple will release its own modem next spring as it looks to replace technology from rival Qualcomm, Bloomberg reports, citing anonymous sources. The in-house modem, code-named Sinope, will debut in the iPhone SE, Apple’s entry-level smartphone.” – LinkedIn News What is going on? After years of neglect, companies are now looking for how hardware will catch up with software. Yes, the advancement of software systems is multiples ahead of hardware, even though there is a limitation for any software system, bounded by hardware. In other words, to advance those clicks, you have to have the hardware to process and compute them, and when there is a limitation on hardware, software underperforms. Nvidia picked that construct and touched the face of alpha-wealth. Tekedia Mini-MBA edition 16 (Feb 10 – May 3, 2025 ) opens registrations; register today for early bird discounts. However, Nvidia chips are very expensive and that will limit participation of many companies and countries in the productive part of AI development and evolution, over mere acceleration of consumerism. The question becomes: how do you solve the hardware problems, and tap into the opportunities? You need to recruit, train and deploy the capabilities of young people. Interestingly, in the next decade, that broad electronics and microelectronics domain will be a huge career opportunity in tech as hardware will take years to evolve to support the AI era. Nigeria has a massive opportunity in this space. There was a time we exported software engineers via Andela, etc, the next age will be hardware guys! If Nigeria’s National Universities Commission can offer a small waiver, to give a temporary license, to run and operate a focused technical university*, on presentation of fund availability of N5 billion, Tekedia Capital will work with partners to set up such a school in Nigeria. Upon the presentation of this license, takeoff will happen within 24 months. But the requirement to build a campus before a license is issued does not work with our US institutional technical partners. Our vision is not to ask students to pay full tuition, but pay when they start work, and we plan to help on job placements. Who can help to make this happen for that license? *this has to be a university to attract the smartest kids.
