In a move that could reshape the social media landscape in the United States, Donald Trump is pressing the U.S. Supreme Court to delay the enactment of a federal law that aims to either ban TikTok or compel its sale. The President-elect contends that he needs time after assuming office to negotiate a political settlement. The case pits TikTok and its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, against U.S. lawmakers who voted in April to outlaw the app unless it is divested by January 19. TikTok is seeking to overturn the legislation, and the Supreme Court has agreed to review the case. A decision against ByteDance could see the app effectively banned from American soil just a day before Trump's planned inauguration. Trump's legal stance highlights the complex intersections of free-speech rights, national security, and foreign policy. Free speech advocates argue that banning TikTok mimics censorship tactics of authoritarian regimes, while the U.S. Justice Department maintains that the app's Chinese ties pose an ongoing security threat. TikTok rebuts such claims, stating that its operations and data management are firmly rooted in the United States. (With inputs from agencies.)

In a rare coordinated response to Washington, Chinese industry associations told Chinese companies on Dec. 3 that U.S. chips are “no longer safe” to buy. The four Chinese industry associations represent approximately 6,400 companies across the country’s largest industries, which include telecommunications, digital technology, automotive, and semiconductor sectors. The Internet Society of China has urged companies to expand cooperation with chip firms from other countries and prioritize using Chinese-made chips, stating that U.S. export controls have caused “substantial harm” to the Chinese internet industry. The China Association of Communication Enterprises stated that it no longer viewed U.S. chip products as safe or reliable and that Beijing should investigate how to secure the country’s critical information infrastructure and supply chain. Despite the export controls, Chinese state-backed chip companies used intermediaries and loopholes to continue obtaining technology, according to the U.S. Commerce Department, leading the United States to tighten restrictions in 2023 and 2024. China is currently a major buyer and seller of larger chips. Many foreign chipmakers have plants in China, and Chinese consumer goods manufacturers need large quantities of chips. U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said earlier this year that some 60 percent of all legacy chips will come from China over the next few years. While foreign chipmakers have noted to investors that they are preparing for further restrictions on selling to China, many said that China remains a key market for legacy chips and that they expected it to remain one for years to come despite further export controls related to national security. “But it seems pretty clear that now the gloves are off,” said Tom Nunlist, associate director at research firm Trivium China. The new restriction covers gallium, germanium, antimony, super-hard materials, and graphite. Gallium and germanium are vital for semiconductor manufacturing, and China remains the world’s leading producer of both minerals. In recent years, Western nations have sought to lessen their dependency on China for critical minerals, which are essential for technology and military development. The CCP has a history of using China’s position in the supply chain as leverage for international negotiations.
A 9th telecoms firm has been hit by a massive Chinese espionage campaign, the White House saysAs J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah sought six months to sort out the reservation issue after Monday’s protest, the power crisis, unemployment and reservation policy are turning out to be big issues faced by J&K government within three months of assuming power. Monday’s protest was organised by NC senior leader and MP Srinagar Aga Ruhullah outside the CM’s house. However, Abdullah had a detailed meeting with five students and assured them the matter will be resolved within six months. “We can’t say it’s a crisis but it is a big challenge for chief minister Omar Abdullah as he has to balance between open merit candidates and those having reservations. Even this was the first time when an NC leader headed a protest against its own government. Earlier, NC would have taken action against any such leader taking protest against the party. Now the circumstances are different. It’s a crisis which needs political maturity to handle it,” said Afaq Ahmad, a political analyst. Just a day after the protest, voices started rising against Ruhullah by his own colleagues. “This wasn’t the protest of the NC but it was the protest of the Srinagar MP. The NC takes its command from party president or vice president,” said legislator Hazratbal Salman Sagar. “It was a protest of NC adversaries. The presence of our MP has unfortunately strengthened our rivals. Unfortunately our men gave them this opportunity. It could have been handled another way. Our rivals are always looking for opportunities to belittle us. They won’t appreciate even if our party is doing good,” he added. Prominent trader and member of Kashmir Chamber of Commerce Umar Nazir Tibet Baqal said this protest should have been held outside Raj Bhawan. “The Reservation issue taken by the Srinagar MP is much appreciated. Protesting outside CM residence is unwarranted and uncalled for as this reservation policy was not introduced by him or his party. It would have been more appropriate if this protest was done outside Raj Bhawan,” he said. Former city mayor Junaid Azim Mattu blamed the NC for its arrogance. “With this level of arrogance, it seems NC’s downfall will be down a steeper precipice than the PDP. The PDP went down from 28 to 3. The NC will go down from 42 to 5, If they continue to behave arrogantly with the people who elected them and gave them an opportunity to deliver,” Mattu wrote on X. Apart from reservation, the electricity crisis and unemployment are the biggest problems faced by the current government. “It’s ironic that the rates of electricity have been increased and still people are facing power crises. This government sought votes on giving free 200 units. Leave free power, give us the electricity which the government has promised,” said Yasmeen, a housewife. After five years of a lull in major recruitments coupled with scams in recruitment process, the youth seem to be more agitated and want the new government to act. “The government needs to work fast first to resolve the reservation issue and then call for major recruitment processes. A lot of educated youth are on the verge of getting overaged,” said Mohammad Anees, a science graduate from Srinagar.
Matt Gaetz seems to be enjoying the unemployed life. The former Florida representative resigned from Congress after Donald Trump nominated him to be attorney general , only to pull his name from consideration from the post roughly a week later after it became clear the Senate would not confirm him. It had been unclear, however, if Gaetz would opt to rejoin the next Congress in January, having won his reelection bid earlier this month. He told right-wing commentator Charlie Kirk on Friday that he’s done with Capitol Hill. “I’m still going to be in the fight, but it’s going to be from a new perch,” he said . “I do not intend to join the 119th Congress.” Rolling Stone reported on Thursday that multiple people within Trump’s orbit are pushing for the president-elect to give Gaetz a plum job in the White House — one that would not require Senate confirmation, of course, given the allegations that he had sex with a 17-year-old girl in 2017. Shortly after he told Kirk that he wouldn’t be joining Congress next year, Gaetz teased on X, formerly Twitter, that his next phase could involve dishing on his now-former colleagues. “Stock trading is such a huge part of congress,” he wrote . “It shouldn’t be. I can’t wait to tell all these stories of corruption, treason, and betrayal. Coming soon.” There may be some stories still to tell about Gaetz, too. There was concern in Trump’s orbit ahead of his decision to punt on attorney general that he could be, as one Trump adviser put it to Rolling Stone , “the single most blackmail-able person to ever serve as attorney general of the United States” — given what appears to be a widespread belief that what is publicly known about Gaetz’s alleged sexual misconduct only represents the tip of the iceberg. His Fall From Grace Was a Rock Tragedy Regardless, Gaetz indicated to Kirk on Friday that he could have weathered the scrutiny and become attorney general, and that he only backed out because the process would have taken too long. “It was more a matter of pace than anything,” he said. “The pace was just going to be too long for me.” Sure it was.
NEW YORK , Dec. 24, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, the Council for Autism Service Providers (CASP) honored ABA Centers, the nation's fastest growing autism care provider, by partnering to ring the iconic Closing Bell at the New York Stock Exchange together. Lorri Unumb , Chief Executive Officer of CASP; Christopher Barnett , Founder & Chairman of ABA Centers; and his daughter, Madison Mulvey , were the official bell ringers during the 1 pm ceremony, marking an early close of the markets in preparation for the upcoming Christmas holiday. ABA Centers was founded as a testament to a father's love for his daughter, sparked from Mr. Barnett's personal experience attempting to acquire a diagnosis and then quality care for his own child, Ms. Mulvey, who spent years dealing with a misdiagnosis and missing out on the proper treatment that she desperately needed. What Mr. Barnett experienced as the parent of a child on the spectrum – the inadequacies, the lack of services available, and the long wait lists within the autism care system – were simply unacceptable. As a longtime healthcare entrepreneur, Mr. Barnett recognized that he already harnessed the infrastructure to effectuate real change within the autism care industry, so he set out to create a mission-driven organization, where every employee throughout the corporate and clinical teams is dedicated to making a lasting impact in the lives of autistic children and their families. "I hope that the sound waves of this bell ringing transcend the trading floor and serve as a rally call for quick, compassionate, and top quality autism care across our country," remarked Mr. Barnett. "Seeing CASP and ABA Centers on the New York Stock Exchange podium should encourage other decision makers and deal makers alike to find ways in which they can positively impact the autism care industry further because there are millions of children currently languishing on wait lists and missing out on the autism care that they deserve during the most crucial times." In 2024, ABA Centers achieved the following monumental milestones, which served to amplify its commitment to providing every kid in the country with world class autism care: "For mission-driven organizations like CASP and ABA Centers, this bell ringing ceremony offers a platform to amplify our message and highlight the importance of autism care, as well as the challenges faced by the autism community, to a robust and influential audience," stated Mrs. Unumb. Mrs. Unumb and Mr. Barnett were joined on the bell ringing podium by the C-suite of ABA Centers: Jason Barker ; Joseph Heilner ; Kristy Johnson ; Quatiba Davis; Michael Holohan ; Michael Holzum ; Michael Holzum, Jr. ; and Ted Bender ; members of The Christopher M. Atalanta kept hold of top spot in Serie A on Saturday after escaping Lazio with a 1-1 draw which kept Inter Milan at bay but ended their club-record league winning streak at 11 matches. Marco Brescianini tapped home into an open goal with two minutes remaining to snatch a point from the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, where a passionate crowd thought a big win was coming their way. Instead Atalanta are a point ahead of Inter, who have a game in hand, after the champions briefly drew level on points with a 3-0 win at Cagliari. Atalanta will lead the league even if Napoli beat Venezia on Sunday and draw level on 41 points with Gian Piero Gasperini’s side due to their significantly better goal difference. Should two teams finish level at the top of Serie A come the end of the season they will face off in a single match to decide the destination of the Scudetto. Atalanta showed great character to battle back from Fisayo Dele-Bashiru’s 27th-minute opener which came in an intense opening period from Lazio. The away side were initially blitzed by Lazio, with Marco Carnesecchi making two sensational stops before Matteo Guendouzi curled a great strike off the post in the 11th minute. But as the match wore on Atalanta, who were without injured star striker Mateo Retegui, grew into the game and deservedly drew level in front of a boisterous and hostile crowd in the Italian capital. Brescianini netted his third goal of the season thanks largely to Ademola Lookman, who beat Lazio’s offside trap to meet Nicolo Zaniolo’s hooked pass and rolled across to his teammate to salvage a precious point.
