6 dead in New Jersey after car flies off overpass, bursts into flames

Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Locals and tourists frequently mix on the cobbled streets of downtown Stavanger, Norway. In 2025, the Norwegian city of Stavanger will embark on a year-long celebration of its 900th anniversary, inviting locals and visitors alike to join in commemorating this historic milestone. Stavanger is Norway’s fourth-biggest city and located on the country’s southwest coast. Although known as a center for Norway’s oil and gas industry, it’s also a tourist hub thanks to its picturesque old town and proximity to natural attractions like the Lysefjord and Pulpit Rock. The festivities will mark the founding of Stavanger in 1125, a year when the impressive Stavanger Cathedral was completed, establishing the city. The anniversary promises a year of events and projects that explore Stavanger’s rich history, vibrant present, and forward-looking future. Visitors to Stavanger can play their part too. Organized by the city of Stavanger in collaboration with key institutions like the Church of Norway, the University of Stavanger, and Museum Stavanger, the celebrations aim to leave a lasting legacy for future generations. Whether strolling through a glowing cityscape during January’s Glød Light Festival, savoring global cuisine along Pedersgata during the Gladmat Food Festival, or witnessing the historic departure of the emigrant ship Restauration in July, visitors will find countless reasons to immerse themselves in Stavanger’s unique story. Stavanger 2025: Past, Present, Future The overarching theme of Stavanger 2025 —“Past, Present, Future”—reflects the city’s journey through time. Past explores Stavanger’s origins and cultural heritage, centered on the Cathedral and its role in shaping the city’s identity. The cathedral has recently undergone a multi-year restoration project. Researchers have discovered a lot of curiosities about the Cathedral during the restorations. As the birthplace of the city, Stavanger Cathedral will be a focus point for the 900th anniversay celebrations. Present highlights the interplay between nature, community, and urban life, with Pedersgata as a hub for food, art, and storytelling. Stavanger’s role as a tourist hub for the southwestern fjords is relevant here. Future looks forward, focusing on innovation and sustainability, with the Ullandhaug area symbolizing the knowledge hubs driving change. Tough questions will be addressed, including climate and environmental challenges, changing demographics and the resulting welfare models, and the growing digital lifestyle. It’s not all serious debate, though. Fimbul e-sports club will hold a competition Cathedral in Pixels , which spans the past, present and future themes. The idea is to construct Stavanger Cathedral within the game Minecraft. “Students can build the cathedral as it looks now, or for example as it looked 400 years ago, or as they think it will look in 400 years. We hope for many creative projects,” said Fimbul’s John Arne Gaard Nilsen. Major Events Marking Stavanger 2025 The year begins in January with the Glød Light Festival, transforming the city with dazzling light installations that promise to brighten up the winter darkness. In April, the four-day City Festival takes over Stavanger’s streets with music, dance, and the performance “The Story of Our City,” held across five city center locations. June is packed with events, including the 900x Hooray! weekend of concerts, historical reenactments, and a unique time capsule project. The redeveloped Pedersgata becomes the focal point during the Gladmat Food Festival , celebrating the city’s culinary diversity with local food and a record-breaking long table. In July, history comes to life as a replica of the 1825 ship Restauration sets sail from Stavanger harbor, retracing the first Norwegian emigration to America. Locally built, the ship will depart Norway to speeches, songs and music. Summer continues with Øyhopp 2025, a nine-day festival across Stavanger’s islands, blending music, art, and cultural experiences. Fall brings thought-provoking moments, such as Michael Rakowitz’s exhibition on lost monuments and the debut of The Stavanger Oratorio, a musical tribute to the city’s history. Stavanger 2025 concludes in December with Into the Future, an event exploring the city’s path forward through culture, technology, and innovation—which is set to be an inspiring finale to a year of celebration. The pro-government Sham FM reported that government forces took positions outside Syria’s third-largest city, without elaborating. Rami Abdurrahman who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said Syrian troops and members of different security agencies have withdrawn from the city, adding that rebels have entered parts of it. Losing Homs is a potentially crippling blow for Syria’s embattled leader, Bashar Assad. The city stands at an important intersection between Damascus and Syria’s coastal provinces of Latakia and Tartus — the Syrian leader’s base of support and home to a Russian strategic naval base. Its capture is a major victory for insurgents, who have already seized the cities of Aleppo and Hama , as well as large parts of the south, in a lightning offensive that began Nov. 27. Analysts said Homs falling into rebel hands would be a game-changer. THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. AP’s earlier story follows below. BEIRUT (AP) — Insurgents' stunning march across Syria gained speed on Saturday with news that they had reached the suburbs of the capital and with the government forced to deny rumors that President Bashar Assad had fled the country. The rebels' moves around Damascus, reported by an opposition war monitor and a rebel commander, came after the Syrian army withdrew from much of southern part of the country, leaving more areas, including several provincial capitals, under the control of opposition fighters. The advances in the past week were among the largest in recent years by opposition factions, led by a group that has its origins in al-Qaida and is considered a terrorist organization by the U.S. and the United Nations. In their push to overthrow Assad's government, the insurgents, led by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group, or HTS, have met little resistance from the Syrian army. For the first time in the country's long-running civil war, the government now has control of only four of 14 provincial capitals: Damascus, Homs, Latakia and Tartus. The U.N.’s special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, on Saturday called for urgent talks in Geneva to ensure an “orderly political transition.” Speaking to reporters at the annual Doha Forum in Qatar, he said the situation in Syria was changing by the minute. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, whose country is Assad's chief international backer, said he feels “sorry for the Syrian people.” In Damascus, people rushed to stock up on supplies. Thousands went to Syria's border with Lebanon, trying to leave the country. Many shops in the capital were shuttered, a resident told The Associated Press, and those still open ran out of staples such as sugar. Some were selling items at three times the normal price. “The situation is very strange. We are not used to that,” the resident said, insisting on anonymity, fearing retributions. “People are worried whether there will be a battle (in Damascus) or not.” It was the first time that opposition forces reached the outskirts of Damascus since 2018, when Syrian troops recaptured the area following a yearslong siege. The U.N. said it was moving noncritical staff outside the country as a precaution. Assad's status Syria’s state media denied social media rumors that Assad left the country, saying he is performing his duties in Damascus. He has had little, if any, help from his allies. Russia, is busy with its war in Ukraine . Lebanon’s Hezbollah, which at one point sent thousands of fighters to shore up Assad's forces, has been weakened by a yearlong conflict with Israel. Iran has seen its proxies across the region degraded by regular Israeli airstrikes. U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on Saturday posted on social media that that the United States should avoid engaging militarily in Syria. Pedersen said a date for talks in Geneva on the implementation a U.N. resolution, adopted in 2015, and calling for a Syrian-led political process, would be announced later. The resolution calls for the establishment of a transitional governing body, followed by the drafting of a new constitution and ending with U.N.-supervised elections. Later Saturday, foreign ministers and senior diplomats from eight key countries, including Saudi Arabia, Russia, Egypt, Turkey and Iran, along with Pederson, gathered on the sidelines of the Doha Summit to discuss the situation in Syria. No details were immediately available. The insurgents' march Rami Abdurrahman, who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitor, said insurgents were in the Damascus suburbs of Maadamiyah, Jaramana and Daraya. Opposition fighters were marching toward the Damascus suburb of Harasta, he added. A commander with the insurgents, Hassan Abdul-Ghani, posted on the Telegram messaging app that opposition forces had begun the “final stage” of their offensive by encircling Damascus. HTS controls much of northwest Syria and in 2017 set up a “salvation government” to run day-to-day affairs in the region. In recent years, HTS leader Abu Mohammed al-Golani has sought to remake the group’s image, cutting ties with al-Qaida, ditching hard-line officials and vowing to embrace pluralism and religious tolerance. Syria’s military, meanwhile, sent large numbers of reinforcements to defend the key central city of Homs, Syria’s third largest, as insurgents approached its outskirts. The shock offensive began Nov. 27, during which gunmen captured the northern city of Aleppo, Syria’s largest, and the central city of Hama , the country’s fourth largest city. Opposition activists said Saturday that a day earlier, insurgents entered Palmyra, which is home to invaluable archaeological sites had been in government hands since being taken from the Islamic State group in 2017. To the south, Syrian troops left much of the province of Quneitra including the main Baath City, activists said. Syrian Observatory said government troops have withdrawn from much of the two southern provinces and are sending reinforcements to Homs, where a battle loomed. If the insurgents capture Homs, they would cut the link between Damascus, Assad’s seat of power, and the coastal region where the president enjoys wide support. The Syrian army said in a statement that it carried out redeployment and repositioning in Sweida and Daraa after its checkpoints came under attack by “terrorists." The army said it was setting up a “strong and coherent defensive and security belt in the area,” apparently to defend Damascus from the south. The Syrian government has referred to opposition gunmen as terrorists since conflict broke out in March 2011. Diplomacy in Doha The foreign ministers of Iran, Russia and Turkey, meeting in Qatar, called for an end to the hostilities. Turkey is a main backer of the rebels. Qatar's top diplomat, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, criticized Assad for failing to take advantage of the lull in fighting in recent years to address the country’s underlying problems. “Assad didn’t seize this opportunity to start engaging and restoring his relationship with his people,” he said. Sheikh Mohammed said he was surprised by how quickly the rebels have advanced and said there is a real threat to Syria’s “territorial integrity.” He said the war could “damage and destroy what is left if there is no sense of urgency” to start a political process. Karam reported from London. Associated Press writers Albert Aji in Damascus, Syria and Qassim Abdul-Zahra in Baghdad contributed to this report.

But the Indianapolis Colts quarterback still made it clear he fully felt the pain of a missed opportunity. The Colts often were their own worst enemy against one of the league’s best teams in a 24-6 loss against the Detroit Lions at Lucas Oil Stadium. It’s the fourth loss in the last five outings for Indianapolis (5-7), again increasing the degree of difficulty for a desired playoff push. “Whenever you’re out there playing a good team like that, you can’t beat yourself and try to beat the other team at the same time,” Richardson said. The Colts were penalized 10 times for 75 yards and had 97 yards of total offense negated by those infractions. That created adverse downs and distances that hindered Indianapolis’ efforts to get the running game flowing. Richardson was the team’s leading rusher with 61 yards on 10 carries, but star running back Jonathan Taylor ran just 11 times for 35 yards. It was the second straight week in which the Colts failed to rush for at least 100 yards – a number that was reached in each of Richardson’s first six starts this season. “I think we had some good runs today, especially in the first half, and AR has done a great job passing the ball,” left guard Quenton Nelson said. “We just need to execute up front, blocking whatever the play is called and also limit the penalties myself.” Nelson was flagged three times – once for a false start, once for illegal use of hands and once for being an ineligible receiver down field. It was part of a sloppy performance that was far below expectations in Week 12, and it made things much easier on an excellent Detroit team that doesn’t need the help. Indianapolis’ struggles included a 3-for-12 performance on third down, a dropped touchdown pass in the second quarter by tight end Drew Ogletree and two red-zone trips that ended with just a pair of Matt Gay field goals. “We had some opportunities there, weren’t able to take advantage,” Colts head coach Shane Steichen said. “Obviously, offensively, got down in the red zone a few times, had to settle for two field goals there in the first half. Penalties hurt us. It starts with myself. We have to get those cleaned up. “We had a season-high 10 penalties, I believe, for 75 yards. That’s on me. We can’t have that. We’ve got to play clean football moving forward.” The Lions (10-1) responded with cool efficiency to keep the hosts at arm’s length. Detroit came in averaging 33.6 points per game, and quarterback Jared Goff has 20 touchdown passes. But the Lions needed just a pair of touchdown runs by Jahmyr Gibbs and another by David Montgomery along with a 56-yard field goal by Jake Bates to put this game on ice. Gibbs’ 1-yard scoring plunge gave Detroit a 7-3 lead with 12:07 remaining in the first half, and Montgomery extended the advantage to 14-6 with 3:34 left before intermission. By the time Gibbs’ 5-yard touchdown made it 21-6 with 2:19 left in the third quarter, it was obvious the Lions had all the offense they needed. Goff was 26-of-36 for 269 yards without a touchdown or interception, and Gibbs rushed 21 times for 90 yards. Meanwhile, Richardson wasn’t able to match the statistical aesthetic of his breakout game last week against the New York Jets – though he played better than the numbers suggest. Richardson finished 11-of-28 for 172 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. He had 74 yards wiped out on four completions called back because of penalties, and a wonderfully placed long ball to Ashton Dulin ended in an incompletion when the wide receiver couldn’t get his second foot inbounds. Richardson had his share of misses, including an overthrow against a heavy rush that could have been another big play to wide receiver Alec Pierce and a close-call to wide receiver Josh Downs in the end zone in the fourth quarter. But the 22-year-old deftly moved around in and out of the pocket and kept himself a step ahead of the Detroit defense. The Lions recorded six quarterback hits but no sacks. “It was a lot of completions, a lot of good balls that he threw that kind of got pulled back (by penalties),” Pierce said. “So I’m sure his stats are not really reflecting truly how he played, how he threw the ball.” Michael Pittman Jr. had his best game of the season with six catches for 96 yards, but little else stood out offensively. The defense tallied three sacks, and rookie defensive end Laiatu Latu forced a third-quarter fumble that could have given Indianapolis the ball in Lions’ territory, but the offense recovered and finished the march to the clinching touchdown. With a little more than a month remaining in the regular season, Indianapolis understands the margin for error is dwindling. “We just got to execute,” Richardson said. “We know that was a great team right there, but they didn’t really do anything spectacular to beat us. They played the game the right way, and we didn’t go out and execute the way we know that we’re supposed to. We got behind the sticks a few times. “We let them throw a few penalties against us because of (breakdowns in) our discipline and our details. But we just gotta keep playing. Play complementary football, keep the details detailed and keep trusting the process and just buy in and try to find a way to win.”SAINT PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Kendall Blue and Nolan Minessale had 22 points each in St. Thomas' 88-81 victory over Montana on Saturday. Miles Barnstable had 17 points for the Tommies (7-4). Malik Moore led the Grizzlies (6-4) with 30 points. Money Williams added 14 points, six rebounds and four assists for Montana. Jensen Bradtke had 11 points. The legendary NBA star and the all-time PGA Tour professional are two of the greatest in the history of sports. Few athletes, if any, were more iconic than Michael and Tiger. They both dominated their respective sports and went on to become billionaires off of it. Michael made most of his money with Nike, while Tiger has also landed some massive endorsements. Both Michael and Tiger seem to be on the same page politically, as well. James Gilbert/Getty Images Pedro Salado/Getty Images Both Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods seem to be pretty close to the center. Michael might lean a little more left, with Tiger a little more right - but both have made it clear that they think you should respect the office. Tiger Woods said back in 2018 that he thinks everyone should respect the office. "Well, he's the president of the United States. You have to respect the office. No matter who is in the office, you may like, dislike personality or the politics, but we all must respect the office," Woods said when asked about Donald Trump in 2018. He added: "I've known Donald for a number of years. We've played golf together. We've had dinner together. I've known him pre-presidency and obviously during his presidency.'' Michael Jordan, meanwhile, has also shown support for the office and the troops. He's also stood up for causes like Black Lives Matter. "We have been beaten down [as African Americans] for so many years. It sucks your soul," he said in 2020 according to The Washington Post. "You can't accept it anymore. This is a tipping point. We need to make a stand. We've got to be better as a society regarding race." He added: “We understand that one of the main ways we can change systemic racism is at the polls. “We know it will take time for us to create the change we want to see, but we are working quickly to take action for the Black Community’s voice to be heard.” Neither man has taken too many risks with their political statements, which isn't too surprising, given their celebrity and influence.

The Department of Fisheries, Government of Manipur, in collaboration with the Sinheibi Development Organisation, organized a Fish Farmers’ Awareness Programme cum Fisherman Card Distribution under the National Fisheries Digital Platform (NFDP) at Keibul Lamjao Village. This initiative, a vital component of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Kisan Samridhi Sah-Yojana (PM-MKSSY), aims to strengthen the fisheries sector through financial and technological interventions. It also fosters institutional reforms to achieve sustainable and transformative growth in fisheries. The event coincided with the celebration of Good Governance Day, marking the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Also Read: As part of the programme, fisherman cards were distributed to approximately 100 fish farmers from Moirangkhunou Gram Panchayat in the Thanga constituency. These cards are designed to enhance access to government schemes and resources, empowering local fish farmers and promoting the development of the fisheries sector. Dignitaries present at the event included M. Asnikumar Singh, Chairman of the Loktak Development Authority; E. Rameshore, District Fishery Officer, Bishnupur District; L. Dhaneshwore Singh, Pradhan of Moirangkhunou Gram Panchayat; and Oinam Sova Singh, an educationist. Speaking at the event, M. He highlighted the programme as a testament to the administration’s dedication to fostering development and empowerment among fish farmers.LA Galaxy strike early, hold off New York Red Bulls 2-1 to win their record sixth MLS Cup championshipDon't look now, but the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are knocking on the doorstep of a playoff spot. Despite losing 5 of their last 6 games going into last Sunday, the Bucs now sit just one game back in the standings of the idle Atlanta Falcons after a 30-7 win over the New York Giants on Sunday. According to the NFL.com playoff picture engine , the Bucs have a 54% chance of making the playoffs despite sitting in the 9 seed and out of the playoffs through 12 weeks. That's in large part because the Bucs have the second easiest remaining schedule by win percentage entering last Sunday. That's also because the Bucs are one game back in the loss column of both the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC South AND the Washington Commanders - who lost to Dallas 34-26 on Sunday - for the seventh and final Wild Card spot. The Bucs would lose a tiebreaker to the Falcons by virtue of getting swept in the season series. As such, they'll have to finish ahead of Atlanta at the end of the season since they'd lose a tie. However, they hold a head-to-head advantage over the Washington Commanders for a Wild Card tie by virtue of the Bucs' 37-20 win back in Week 1. That win could end up paying dividends for Tampa Bay.
