Yet there’s one place with a GOP supermajority where linking voting to citizenship appears to be a nonstarter: Kansas. That’s because the state has been there, done that, and all but a few Republicans would prefer not to go there again. Kansas imposed a proof-of-citizenship requirement over a decade ago that grew into one of the biggest political fiascos in the state in recent memory. The law, passed by the state Legislature in 2011 and implemented two years later, ended up blocking the voter registrations of more than 31,000 U.S. citizens who were otherwise eligible to vote. That was 12% of everyone seeking to register in Kansas for the first time. Federal courts ultimately declared the law an unconstitutional burden on voting rights, and it hasn’t been enforced since 2018. Kansas provides a cautionary tale about how pursuing an election concern that in fact is extremely rare risks disenfranchising a far greater number of people who are legally entitled to vote. The state’s top elections official, Secretary of State Scott Schwab, championed the idea as a legislator and now says states and the federal government shouldn’t touch it. “Kansas did that 10 years ago,” said Schwab, a Republican. “It didn’t work out so well.” Steven Fish, a 45-year-old warehouse worker in eastern Kansas, said he understands the motivation behind the law. In his thinking, the state was like a store owner who fears getting robbed and installs locks. But in 2014, after the birth of his now 11-year-old son inspired him to be “a little more responsible” and follow politics, he didn’t have an acceptable copy of his birth certificate to get registered to vote in Kansas. “The locks didn’t work,” said Fish, one of nine Kansas residents who sued the state over the law. “You caught a bunch of people who didn’t do anything wrong.” Kansas' experience appeared to receive little if any attention outside the state as Republicans elsewhere pursued proof-of-citizenship requirements this year. Arizona enacted a requirement this year, applying it to voting for state and local elections but not for Congress or president. The Republican-led U.S. House passed a proof-of-citizenship requirement in the summer and plans to bring back similar legislation after the GOP won control of the Senate in November. In Ohio, the Republican secretary of state revised the form that poll workers use for voter eligibility challenges to require those not born in the U.S. to show naturalization papers to cast a regular ballot. A federal judge declined to block the practice days before the election. Also, sizable majorities of voters in Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Carolina and the presidential swing states of North Carolina and Wisconsin were inspired to amend their state constitutions' provisions on voting even though the changes were only symbolic. Provisions that previously declared that all U.S. citizens could vote now say that only U.S. citizens can vote — a meaningless distinction with no practical effect on who is eligible. To be clear, voters already must attest to being U.S. citizens when they register to vote and noncitizens can face fines, prison and deportation if they lie and are caught. “There is nothing unconstitutional about ensuring that only American citizens can vote in American elections,” U.S. Rep. Chip Roy, of Texas, the leading sponsor of the congressional proposal, said in an email statement to The Associated Press. After Kansas residents challenged their state’s law, both a federal judge and federal appeals court concluded that it violated a law limiting states to collecting only the minimum information needed to determine whether someone is eligible to vote. In 2013, then-Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, a Republican who had built a national reputation advocating tough immigration laws, described the possibility of voting by immigrants living in the U.S. illegally as a serious threat. He was elected attorney general in 2022 and still strongly backs the idea, arguing that federal court rulings in the Kansas case “almost certainly got it wrong.” Kobach also said a key issue in the legal challenge — people being unable to fix problems with their registrations within a 90-day window — has probably been solved. “The technological challenge of how quickly can you verify someone’s citizenship is getting easier,” Kobach said. “As time goes on, it will get even easier.” The U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear the Kansas case in 2020. But in August, it split 5-4 in allowing Arizona to continue enforcing its law for voting in state and local elections while a legal challenge goes forward. Seeing the possibility of a different Supreme Court decision in the future, U.S. Rep.-elect Derek Schmidt says states and Congress should pursue proof-of-citizenship requirements. Schmidt was the Kansas attorney general when his state’s law was challenged. “If the same matter arose now and was litigated, the facts would be different,” he said in an interview. But voting rights advocates dismiss the idea that a legal challenge would turn out differently. Mark Johnson, one of the attorneys who fought the Kansas law, said opponents now have a template for a successful court fight. “We know the people we can call,” Johnson said. “We know that we’ve got the expert witnesses. We know how to try things like this.” He predicted “a flurry — a landslide — of litigation against this.” Initially, the Kansas requirement’s impacts seemed to fall most heavily on politically unaffiliated and young voters. As of fall 2013, 57% of the voters blocked from registering were unaffiliated and 40% were under 30. But Fish was in his mid-30s, and six of the nine residents who sued over the Kansas law were 35 or older. Three even produced citizenship documents and still didn’t get registered, according to court documents. “There wasn’t a single one of us that was actually an illegal or had misinterpreted or misrepresented any information or had done anything wrong,” Fish said. He was supposed to produce his birth certificate when he sought to register in 2014 while renewing his Kansas driver’s license at an office in a strip mall in Lawrence. A clerk wouldn’t accept the copy Fish had of his birth certificate. He still doesn’t know where to find the original, having been born on an Air Force base in Illinois that closed in the 1990s. Several of the people joining Fish in the lawsuit were veterans, all born in the U.S., and Fish said he was stunned that they could be prevented from registering. This time, setting up the mower fell to my husband on a day when I wasn't home. I planned on helping him with the setup upon my return, but I was pleasantly surprised to find it all done when I returned. In fact, he had nothing but praise for the Mammotion's easy setup, as it was completed in under two hours -- from unboxing to up and running in the yard. My current yard is battling decades of neglect, becoming a mix of clovers and grass, but the Luba 2 cuts smoothly through it all. We've been getting a lot of rain lately, which has made the grass grow like crazy. This fast growth has ensured Andretti's work is cut out for it and helped me gather many hours of testing over the past couple of months. Also: I tried a window-cleaning robot and things went surprisingly well Throughout testing, I've found the Mammotion Luba 2 capable of navigating uneven terrain without affecting its map. For example, when other robot mowers slide down a slope sideways, it often disrupts their mapping, and instead of correcting their position, they continue from an incorrect spot. This results in missed patches and the mower winding up outside the coverage area. In my testing, the Luba 2 never fell victim to this glitch. Although it did slide down a few times, it always righted its positioning and maintained the same map. The Mammotion Luba 2 seamlessly navigates uneven terrain. Unfortunately, the Mammotion app isn't very intuitive; changing settings will require some menu hunting and trial and error. However, it is loaded with features. You can use the app to change the mowing pattern from stripes to checkered and more, set up different zones, including no-go zones for pools or garden beds, arrange the path order, and adjust the mowing height. Also: The best robot vacuum mops of 2024: Expert tested and reviewed When mapping, the perimeter you walk with the Luba 2 is the same that will be followed when the robot is out mowing. It's a bit challenging to walk and steer the robot in a perfectly straight line along the perimeter of your property, so I wish you could straighten boundary lines in the app after creating the map. The Luba 2 proved irreverently consistent when mowing along the perimeter. I can see the robot mowing along curved lines that I mistakenly made during mapping, but it does it the same way every time. The path lines the Mammotion Luba 2 created, as captured by my Blink Outdoor camera. Though the Mammotion Luba 2 looks like the Ferrari of mowers, it does the laps around the lawn at its own pace. It's not slow compared to other robot mowers, but don't expect it to live up to its looks and become a turbo turf-tamer. My Luba 2 drifted from its path six times during testing. One of those times, it ended up in my neighbor's yard, which is much less than ideal as they're very particular about how they mow it, but this appears to have happened during positioning and not when the blades were engaged, thankfully. Another time, it failed by going under the deck and losing its signal. It wasn't ever supposed to go under the deck, but I guess it was taking a shortcut to the pole position (I am truly sorry about that one). You can also steer the robot in the app to manually mow over tough areas where you think it may drift away – this is also a good feature for touching up areas that need it. The Mammotion app also offers first-person view (FPV), so you can check where your robot is at any time if it gets stranded and you're not there to see it. ZDNET's buying advice I'm aware these GPS-powered robots make mistakes as this new technology is still being perfected for accuracy, so I generally don't mind these hiccups. But I do find the Mammotion Luba 2 is much less prone to errors than the EcoFlow Blade. I can count so much on Andretti following its map that I feel okay letting it mow the unfenced front lawn, even the picky neighbors' side, something I would never let the Blade do. Also: Everything you need to upgrade your camping trip Lastly, I love how quiet the Luba 2 is. One of the strangest things about having a robot mower is that it takes care of the lawn so quietly that it can escape your notice. It's described as that feeling you get after spending hours scrolling through social media. You could say this news has been 170 years in the making. That's how long it's been since Henry David Thoreau sat by Walden Pond and reflected on the spread of brain rot. And now an unholy union of clever tech and cultural dreck have turned that illness into a global plague. Brain rot and social media Experts define brain rot as mental lethargy and cognitive decline caused by too much doomscrolling, zombie scrolling, video gaming and other forms of social media addiction. "In many ways we have abdicated our responsibility as parents because we feel we aren't competent in the digital space," said Dr. Michael Rich of the Digital Wellness Lab at Children's Hospital, author of "The Mediatrician's Guide: A Joyful Approach to Raising Healthy, Smart, Kind Kids in a Screen-Saturated World." He says the issue isn't so much the lure of the web and its seductive algorithms, but kids being left alone, unchallenged, and easily seducible. "First of all, a parent should model the kind of behavior they want to see in their kids," said Rich. "We have to be the change we want to see in our kids. The smartphone, the laptop is a power tool that can do incredible things, we can be all around the world with all kinds of people, and yet we often choose the path of least resistance which is well-paved for us by very sophisticated psychological design in these online programs." Fighting brain rot in kids But for parents willing to fight brain rot, here's the good news. "Kids actually do want our attention, that's one of the most frequent answers I get from kids when I ask them what could your parents do better - pay more attention to me," said Rich. The deck might seem stacked when it comes to the rotting of our kids' brains by social media - unsavvy mom and dad vs. billion-dollar corporations peddling garbage dressed up with slick graphics and addictive technology. But you parents have a secret weapon - you're right there, while Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg are not. And as Dr. Rich puts it: "the kids are going to be alright, if we are there with them." On Sunday, the Israeli military said it carried out strikes against 12 Hezbollah command centres in the southern Beirut suburb of Dahiyeh. On Saturday, it had carried out one of its deadliest and most powerful strikes on the centre of Beirut. Lebanon's health ministry on Sunday raised the death toll from 20 to 29. It said a total of 84 people had been killed on Saturday, taking the death toll to 3754 since October 2023. The IDF did not comment on Saturday's strike in the Lebanese capital or say what it had attacked. Israel went on the offensive against the Iran-backed Hezbollah in September, pounding the south, the Bekaa Valley and Beirut's southern suburbs with airstrikes after nearly a year of hostilities ignited by the Gaza war. The Israeli offensive has uprooted more than one million people in Lebanon. Israel says its aim is to secure the return home of tens of thousands of people evacuated from its north due to rocket attacks by Hezbollah, which opened fire in support of Hamas at the start of the Gaza war in October 2023. US mediator Amos Hochstein highlighted progress in negotiations during a visit to Beirut last week, before travelling to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz, before returning to Washington. European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell on Sunday said a US ceasefire proposal was awaiting final approval from Israel. "We must pressure the Israeli government and maintain the pressure on Hezbollah to accept the US proposal for a ceasefire," he said in Beirut after meeting Lebanese officials. Israeli media reported that Netanyahu had convened a meeting of his security cabinet for Monday. Axios reporter Barak Ravid in a post on social media cited an unnamed Israeli official saying that Israel is moving towards a ceasefire agreement in Lebanon. But a separate report from Israel's public broadcaster Kan said there was no green light given on an agreement in Lebanon, with issues still yet to be resolved. Diplomacy has focused on restoring a ceasefire based on UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended a 2006 Hezbollah-Israel war. It requires Hezbollah to pull its fighters back around 30km from the Israeli border, and the Lebanese army to deploy in the buffer zone. The Lebanese army said on Sunday at least one soldier had been killed and 18 more injured in an Israeli strike that caused severe damage at an army centre in Al-Amiriya near the southern city of Tyre. The Israeli military said it regretted the incident and was investigating, and that it was fighting against Hezbollah, not the Lebanese Army. 5 more people booked; LOC, blue notice issued against Myron Panaji: Spreading its net in an investment fraud, the economic offences cell of the Goa police has booked five more people in connection with cheating cases where a husband-wife duo allegedly duped nearly 70 persons to the tune of over Rs 100 crore, mostly from Salcete taluka. The five persons, who are the directors of Idylic Goan Gateways and Developments Private Limited, are 32-year-old Fatorda resident Nolan Lawrence Antao, Joaquim Rosario Pires, also from Fatorda, 54-year-old Kudal resident Vijay Joil, 55-year-old Benaulim local Navnik Mario Pereira and 53-year-old Sushant Ghodge from Pernem. Giving details of the case, SP (crime branch) Rahul Gupta said, “On August 8, we registered an FIR under sections 406, 420 read with Section 34 of the IPC upon the complaint of Navelim resident Ivon Suresh Joaquim Almeida against accused Myron Rodrigues and his wife Deepali Parab, both residents of Kirbhat Nuvem, for cheating the complainant to the tune of over Rs 36.54 lakh on the pretext of investing his money in share market. The couple offered lucrative returns and misappropriated the money of the complainant for their own use. On August 30, another FIR under sections 406, 420 read with Section 34 of the IPC was registered after receiving more complaints against the same accused for duping the investors to the tune of over Rs 20.83 crore, Gupta said. The police received a total of 38 complaints from the investors against accused Myron Rodrigues and Deepali Parab all amounting to over Rs 23.21 crore, he said. “As per the complainants, there are more than 50 investors who have been duped of Rs 100 crore. Fraud mostly happened with the people from Salcete taluka. The complainants had been investing since 2011, and they have not received their money back,” he disclosed. Gupta said the accused Myron introduced himself to investors as a stock broker and Deepali as a financial expert and duped the people. The senior police official said they are neither registered with SEBI nor with the RBI to carry out trading in securities. “41A notice has been issued to Deepali Parab; she has been constantly summoned at the EOC for investigation. Myron is absconding and evading the process of law. Through intelligence we came to know that Myron fled from India to London via Dubai on July 24, 2023. A lookout circular (LOC) through Bureau of Immigration and a blue notice through Interpol have been issued against the accused Myron. We are making efforts to bring him back to Goa. Red Corner notice is in process,” he said. Gupta also said Myron had given mutual divorce to his ex-wife Sunita Rodrigues in 2021 and thereafter married Deepali Parab. “We have frozen bank accounts of the accused Myron and Deepali having a total amount of over Rs 6 lakh, fixed deposit of over Rs 35 lakh and also two bank lockers. We have identified eight properties belonging to Myron, Sunita and Deepali, the SP said. The police have “blocked” their properties by sending letters to sub-registrar not to sell them. The police have also shared the information with the ED too, he said, adding that there are seven flats and one villa all worth Rs 3.5 crore. As per statement summary of bank account of Myron, he received over Rs 130 crore and spent over Rs 129 crore from 2009 to August 17, 2023, the police official said. “Myron and Deepali are proprietors of body corporate called DMA Designing New Worlds LLP, which was incorporated before the Registrar of Company, Goa. The said company dealt in real estate business,” he said. He also informed that the company Idylic Goan Gateways and Developments Private Limited and Myron and Deepali are partners in a partnership firm i.e. Prospect Realty which was registered before the sub-registrar of Salcete, Margao and the said firm is engaged in real estate business. “Myron transferred investors’ money of over Rs 3.25 crore from November 2022 to June 2023 from his bank account to Idylic Goan Gateways and Developments Private Limited and Rs 2 crore to Prospect Realty for business purpose,” Gupta said. He informed that on November 21, all the directors of Idylic Goan Gateways and Developments Private Limited, have been arrayed as accused in the crime after scrutiny of the financial transactions. “We have also added sections 3 and 5 of the Goa Protection of Interest of Depositors (In Financial Establishments) Act 1999 (GPID) for attaching the movable and immovable properties of accused persons and to carry out the liquidation process. We are investigating their role too in the whole fraud committed by Myron,” he said. “Accused Nolan, Vijay Joil, Navnik Mario Pereira and Sushant Ghodge filed anticipatory bail application before the sessions court, Panaji. The court granted interim relief to them and imposed conditions. They were directed to report to the EOC for five days from Sunday from 10 am to 1 pm,” he said. “Both the cases are under investigation. Efforts are continuing to nab accused Myron and associates,” he said. Goa’s biggest investment scam: Sawant Margao: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Sunday said the economic offence cell of the Goa police is investigating the “Goa’s biggest investment scam”, adding that action will be initiated against those involved in it. He was reacting to the lookout circular issued through the Bureau of Immigration and blue notice through Interpol against Nuvem resident Myron Rodrigues for allegedly cheating several people of Goa, luring them of good returns. Others have also been booked in connection with the scam. Speaking to mediapersons on the sidelines of a programme in Margao, Sawant said, “This is the biggest investment scam in Goa. It started in Fatorda and has connection with London. We will investigate it and will take action against those involved in it.’’ The Chief Minister exhorted the people affected by the scam to come forward and file police complaints.

Then Verhaeghe began seeing more of Trump’s campaign speeches online and his appearances at sporting events. There was even the former president’s pairing with Bryson DeChambeau as part of the pro golfer’s YouTube channel series to shoot an under-50 round of golf while engaging in chitchat with his partner. “I regret saying this, but a while ago I thought he was an idiot and that he wouldn’t be a good president,” said the 18-year-old first-time voter. “I think he’s a great guy now.” Verhaeghe isn’t alone among his friends in suburban Detroit or young men across America. Although much of the electorate shifted right to varying degrees in 2024, young men were one of the groups that swung sharply toward Trump. More than half of men under 30 supported Trump, according to AP VoteCast , a survey of more than 120,000 voters, while Democrat Joe Biden had won a similar share of this group four years earlier. White men under 30 were solidly in Trump’s camp this year — about 6 in 10 voted for Trump — while young Latino men were split between the two candidates. Most Black men under 30 supported Democrat Kamala Harris, but about one-third were behind Trump. Young Latino men’s views of the Democratic Party were much more negative than in 2020, while young Black men’s views of the party didn’t really move. About 6 in 10 Latino men under 30 had a somewhat or very favorable view of the Democrats in 2020, which fell to about 4 in 10 this year. On the other hand, about two-thirds of young Black men had a favorable view of the Democrats this year, which was almost identical to how they saw the party four years ago. “Young Hispanic men, and really young men in general, they want to feel valued,” said Rafael Struve, deputy communications director for Bienvenido, a conservative group that focused on reaching young Hispanic voters for Republicans this year. “They’re looking for someone who fights for them, who sees their potential and not just their struggles.” Struve cited the attempted assassination of Trump during a July rally in Pennsylvania as one of the catalyzing moments for Trump’s image among many young men. Trump, Struve said, was also able to reach young men more effectively by focusing on nontraditional platforms like podcasts and digital media outlets. “Getting to hear from Trump directly, I think, really made all the difference,” Struve said of the former president’s appearances on digital media platforms and media catering to Latino communities, like town halls and business roundtables Trump attended in Las Vegas and Miami. Not only did Trump spend three hours on Joe Rogan’s chart-topping podcast, but he took up DeChambeau’s “Break 50” challenge for the golfer’s more than 1.6 million YouTube subscribers. Trump already had an edge among young white men four years ago, although he widened the gap this year. About half of white men under 30 supported Trump in 2020, and slightly less than half supported Biden. Trump’s gains among young Latino and Black men were bigger. His support among both groups increased by about 20 percentage points, according to AP VoteCast — and their feelings toward Trump got warmer, too. It wasn’t just Trump. The share of young men who identified as Republicans in 2024 rose as well, mostly aligning with support for Trump across all three groups. “What is most alarming to me is that the election is clear that America has shifted right by a lot,” said William He, founder of Dream For America, a liberal group that works to turn out young voters and supported Harris’ presidential bid. With his bombastic demeanor and a policy agenda centered on a more macho understanding of culture, Trump framed much of his campaign as a pitch to men who felt scorned by the country’s economy, culture and political system. Young women also slightly swung toward the former president, though not to the degree of their male counterparts. It’s unclear how many men simply did not vote this year. But there’s no doubt the last four years brought changes in youth culture and how political campaigns set out to reach younger voters. Democrat Kamala Harris’ campaign rolled out policy agendas tailored to Black and Latino men, and the campaign enlisted a range of leaders in Black and Hispanic communities to make the case for the vice president. Her campaign began with a flurry of enthusiasm from many young voters, epitomized in memes and the campaign’s embrace of pop culture trends like the pop star Charli XCX’s “brat” aesthetic. Democrats hoped to channel that energy into their youth voter mobilization efforts. “I think most young voters just didn’t hear the message,” said Santiago Mayer, executive director of Voters of Tomorrow, a liberal group that engages younger voters. Mayer said the Harris campaign’s pitch to the country was “largely convoluted” and centered on economic messaging that he said wasn’t easily conveyed to younger voters who were not already coming to political media. “And I think that the policies themselves were also very narrow and targeted when what we really needed was a simple, bold economic vision,” said Mayer. Trump also embraced pop culture by appearing at UFC fights, football games and appearing alongside comedians, music stars and social media influencers. His strategists believed that the former president’s ability to grab attention and make his remarks go viral did more for the campaign than paid advertisements or traditional media appearances. Investor excitement for artificial intelligence (AI) might be overhyped today. The stock market can at times seem like a manic-depressive being, exaggerating any positive or negative developments with rapid share price swings. With AI stocks like Nvidia soaring tenfold in just a few years, it is possible these stocks will head into a correction, given that they are priced for perfection at the moment. This doesn't change the fact that the generative AI sector is still in the early innings of growth. Some analysts estimate that spending on generative AI alone will reach $356 billion in 2030, growing at a 46% annual rate over the next six years, making it one of the fastest-growing sectors in the world. That would be up from an estimated $36 billion this year. With its premium valuation, a company such as Nvidia already has a lot of this growth priced into its stock. However, there is one reasonably priced AI stock hiding in plain sight: Alphabet ( GOOGL -1.71% ) ( GOOG -1.58% ) . Here's why the technology giant will benefit from surging demand for generative AI through 2030. Alphabet's AI comeback OpenAI struck fear into Alphabet investors back in late 2022. With the rapid growth of ChatGPT and its advanced conversational AI tools, investors worried that Alphabet -- parent company of Google Search -- had fallen behind in AI. This led its stock to fall to a price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) of close to 15 in early 2023, its cheapest earnings ratio in a decade. In the last two years, Alphabet has proven these doubters wrong. The stock has posted a 90% total return since these 2023 lows. Through its various subsidiaries and research labs, Alphabet has copied or bested every single one of OpenAI's innovations and has come up with some new AI products of its own. There is NotebookLM, a document summary tool that can speak audibly or provide written summaries on complex topics. There are also the new Google Search AI summaries, which are helping improve the customer value proposition of the most-used product on the planet. Let's not forget the new Google Lens feature, which allows people to search by taking a picture instead of the traditional text query. The list could go on. Alphabet is winning outside of generative AI, too. Its self-driving start-up, Waymo, has expanded to multiple cities across the United States and now does 100,000 weekly rides, growing tenfold year over year. This is an underrated part of Alphabet's business that is only enabled by its leadership in AI. Betting on cloud revenue growth Alphabet has proven in the last few years that it is not a lagging tech company in AI. In fact, you might be able to argue that the company is the definitive winner so far in this new generative AI space. But how will the company monetize all these new tools? One way is through Google Cloud, Alphabet's most promising subsidiary at the moment. The cloud computing giant takes all of Alphabet's innovations in AI, computer chips, and data centers and sells these tools to third parties. Last quarter, Google Cloud revenue grew 35% year over year to $11.4 billion. Over the long term, investors should expect this fantastic growth to continue if the analysts are correct about booming generative AI spending through 2030. At $100 billion in annual revenue and 25% profit margins -- a milestone Google Cloud should reach within a few years -- the segment will be generating $25 billion in operating earnings for the parent company. That is a sizable and growing chunk of its $105 billion in trailing consolidated operating earnings. GOOG PE Ratio data by YCharts Investors are still underrating the stock Even though Alphabet is proving its might in AI both with product innovation and its financial performance, the stock is still not performing in line with other technology peers. With a P/E of just 23, Alphabet has one of the cheapest earnings ratios across the AI and broader technology landscape. Nvidia has a P/E of 66. Apple -- which is growing much slower than Alphabet and has shown little ability to succeed with AI products -- is trading at a P/E of 37. Generative AI revenue is going to soar through the rest of this decade. The one company set to take the largest slice of this revenue is Alphabet because of its plethora of AI products and monetization tactics. The 2015 deal contains a "snapback" mechanism that can be triggered in case of "significant non-performance" of commitments by Iran, allowing many sanctions to be reimposed. More info Kim Cotton was a 28-year-old mother-of-two when she made a decision that thrust her into the national spotlight and sparked a debate that would change surrogacy in Britain forever in the 1980s. It was 1985, and Kim became the UK's first commercial surrogate, agreeing to carry a baby for an anonymous Scandinavian couple for £6,500. But what should have been a private act of compassion turned into a storm of controversy, with Kim becoming a household name overnight, reports the Mirror . In the 80s, surrogacy was uncharted territory. When Kim gave birth to a baby girl, dubbed "Baby Cotton", on January 4, 1985, at London’s Victoria Maternity Hospital , her name was splashed across headlines, and her actions were debated in parliament. Even as she laboured, reporters swarmed outside the hospital to cover the historic event. “I had no idea I’d be the first , or what the reaction would be,” Kim, now 68, says from her Cambridgeshire home. “I was doing what I wanted to do in my heart, to give this incredible gift to a couple who couldn’t have a child of their own. But I’ve always said that yes, I also did it for the money – something I was absolutely vilified for.” The money, Kim admits, was a factor. Kim’s labour was far from ordinary. Social services arrived at the hospital , interrogating her as she gave birth. “I had to lock myself in the toilet to calm down,” she says. The baby was immediately made a ward of court, meaning the intended parents had to obtain legal permission to take her home. Kim barely had time to hold Baby Cotton before she was taken away. “She looked like one of mine,” Kim recalls. “ To have to abandon her in hospital for the seven days it took for the court process to to be resolved, was dreadful. It was the worst week of my life, a shocking ending to what should have been such a lovely thing .” Kim’s surrogacy journey began two years earlier when she saw a programme about the concept on TV. Inspired, she wrote to an American surrogacy agency offering her services. “ Like me, my husband thought we had a complete family by then, with a little boy, Jamie, and girl Anouska, of our own ,” she explains. “When I sent the letter off, we both thought it was probably pie in the sky as it was so unreal, but it worked out that it wasn’t.” A year later, Kim was contacted by a UK-based coordinator, and the process began. The arrangement was clear: she would not meet the intended parents or the baby again. “I’ve never actively sought her out,” Kim says of the baby . “ She turns 40 in January so she could be a young mum herself, and I’d never want to upset her by pursuing a relationship with her. But I’m absolutely open to meeting her if she wanted to find me. I’m certainly out there publicly, and I’ve put my DNA on an ancestry website .” In the weeks following Baby Cotton’s birth , Kim’s life became a media circus. Reporters camped outside her house, and she was inundated with interview requests. News at 10 and Anne Diamond visited her home. “In the early days, it felt surreal, like I was in a dream world,” she says. “I felt very empty at the time. It wasn’t until about five years later when I did a counselling course that the cost of what happened felt real, when all the old wounds were opened.” The backlash was swift. By July 1985, the Surrogacy Arrangements Act was rushed through Parliament , banning commercial surrogacy and any form of advertising. Subsequent laws, like the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990, made surrogacy agreements unenforceable and restricted payments to “reasonable expenses.” Kim supports the ban on commercial surrogacy . “The £6,500 I received felt irrelevant after everything that happened,” she admits. But she insists her experience inspired others. “The letters meant a lot, people saying they’d love to be a surrogate, or couples wishing they could find someone to do this wonderful thing for them.” Despite the turmoil of her first surrogacy , Kim wasn’t deterred. In 1991, she carried twins for a friend and her husband through an embryo transfer. “This experience couldn’t have been more different,” she says. "I knew the couple, they were with me every step of the way during the pregnancy, and when I watched them take a baby each in their arms after they were born, it was the best experience of my life. It was magical.” The public response was also kinder. “Now I was a saint, whereas before I was a sinner. Yet I’d done the same thing both times.” Kim stayed in touch with the twins, who affectionately call her their “tummy mummy .” Now in their 30s, they live abroad but remain close to Kim. In 1988, Kim co-founded Childlessness Overcome Through Surrogacy (COTS), a not-for-profit organisation supporting surrogates and childless couples. Over its lifetime, COTS has helped facilitate 1,136 births. Kim has remained a passionate advocate for surrogacy, campaigning for clearer laws and better protections for all involved. “Progress has been made, but we’re not there yet,” she says. Current laws still prohibit surrogacy advertising and requires intended parents to apply for legal parenthood post-birth, a process Kim describes as outdated. In 2023, the Law Commission proposed reforms, including recognising intended parents as legal parents from birth and creating a Surrogacy Register to help children trace their origins. While supportive, Kim believes more clarity is needed around allowable expenses. “Most surrogates receive around £15,000 for expenses, which isn’t unreasonable. We don’t want to attract vulnerable women doing it for the wrong reasons.” After nearly 40 years in the field, Kim plans to step down from COTS in 2025 and become an independent surrogacy consultant. Reflecting on her journey, she has no regrets. “At the end of the day, I brought joy to that couple,” she says. “It was traumatic , but I gave them the gift of life. LONDON—Apple complained that requests from Meta Platforms for access to its operating software threaten user privacy, in a spat fueled by the European Union’s intensifying efforts to get the iPhone maker to open up to products from tech rivals. The 27-nation EU’s executive Commission is drawing up “interoperability” guidelines for Apple under its new digital competition rulebook. The interoperability measures would ensure that devices like smartwatches or features like wireless file transfers work as smoothly with iPhones as do Apple Watches or AirDrop. The EU’s rulebook, known as the Digital Markets Act, aims to promote fair competition in digital markets and prevent Big Tech “gatekeeper” companies from cornering markets. The commission posted proposed measures late Wednesday on how Apple should make its iOS operating system work with other technology. In response, Apple said it’s “concerned that some companies—with data practices that do not meet the high standards of data protection law held by the EU and supported by Apple—may attempt to abuse the DMA’s interoperability provisions to access sensitive user data.” The company singled out Meta, saying it has made at least 15 requests “for potentially far-reaching access to Apple’s technology stack” that would reduce privacy protections for users. If those requests were granted, “Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp could enable Meta to read on a user’s device all of their messages and emails, see every phone call they make or receive, track every app that they use, scan all of their photos, look at their files and calendar events, log all of their passwords,” the company said in a report. Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, fought back. “Here’s what Apple is actually saying: they don’t believe in interoperability,” Meta spokesman Andy Stone said in a post on X. “In fact, every time Apple is called out for anticompetitive behavior, they defend themselves on privacy grounds that have no basis in reality.” The Brussels-based European Commission’s proposed measures call for an approach based on Apple’s existing “request-based process,” in which developers ask for access to features and functions. Apple should provide a “dedicated contact” to handle requests and give updates and feedback, and there should be a “fair and impartial conciliation” process to settle disagreements on technical issues. The commission is now asking for feedback from the public by January 9 on the proposals, including from any companies that have made interoperability requests from Apple, or are thinking of doing so. To a man they swear that, with the roster assembled by Steve Staios, the team’s president of hockey operations and general manager, and head coach Travis Green behind the bench, this time it’s different and they’re making strides that will lead to success. “We’ve had our ups and downs already,” centre Shane Pinto told Postmedia on Saturday before faceoff against the Canucks. “We can’t get caught up in the trap of this is the same as the last couple of years. “We’re playing better hockey than the last couple of years and the results haven’t shown, but I don’t think we’ve been playing bad. It’s a results-driven business, and we have to do better than that aspect. We’re in a good mood, we’re together, and that’s the only way we’re going to get out of this. Pinto noted it was about those “little inches, and I just don’t feel like we’ve gotten the bounces, but we have to better in certain areas as well.” The Senators are trying desperately not to look at the big picture. They woke up on Saturday in 15th place in the NHL’s Eastern Conference and four points out of the final playoff spot. “It’s corny to say, but (Green) has emphasized sticking with that process,” Pinto said. “We can’t worry about the results because, if we play our game, the results will take care of themselves. If we look at the standings, that will just be a distraction the whole year. “If we play process-driven hockey ... You see the talent in this room. We’ll score, and it’s just a matter of defending a bit better to clean up those mistakes. We just have to be better at keeping an even keel because there are going to be momentum switches in games. “We go up and down a bit too much. Our biggest challenge is to stay even. THREE TAKEAWAYS LINUS ULLMARK’S STRUGGLES The Senators paid a big price to acquire Ullmark from the Boston Bruins only hours before Game 7 of the Stanley Cup final in June. They sent goaltender Joonas Korpisalo, centre Mark Kastelic and a first-round pick (No. 25 overall) to the Bruins for Ullmark, who had split duties in Boston with Jeremy Swayman. Two years removed from winning the Vezina Trophy as the NHL’s top goalie, Ullmark was brought to Ottawa to stabilize the situation in net. He was then a year away from unrestricted free agency, but Staios opted to sign Ullmark to a four-year, $33 million U.S. extension that will kick in at $8.25 million per season. So far, Ullmark hasn’t performed up to expectations, though. He went into the game against the Canucks with a 4-6-1 record, a 3.00 goals-against average and a save percentage of .887. Those numbers just aren’t good enough, and, if they don’t improve, the Senators have no chance of making the post-season. Article content “His track record proves that he gets this turned around,” Staios said. “He’s a quality goaltender with a long track record of being a quality goaltender. There are times in a season where a player isn’t at his best and it gets magnified when you’re a goaltender. “We have full belief that Linus will get back to form. There is a lot that has been put on this player in particular. Every player has things they have to deal with when they come in. But a trade, a new contract and an emotional game in Boston. I haven’t talked to Linus about this, but we know he’s going to settle in.” Backup Anton Forsberg hasn’t been a whole lot better, but he has recorded two shutouts in his eight appearances and he’s ahead of Ullmark with his 3-4-0 record, 2.76 goals-against average and .903 save percentage. It’s paramount that Ullmark gets back to form, which was why he started against the Canucks, with the Senators trying to help him dig his way out of this. DEFENSIVE WOES Social media has been alive and kicking with the decision by Green to sit defenceman Jacob Bernard-Docker regularly. Bernard-Docker was back in the press box against the Canucks because the Senators wanted veteran Travis Hamonic back in the lineup. It was the third pairing on defence, which wouldn’t make a big difference in the grand scheme of things. Article content It should be noted Jensen, acquired from the Washington Capitals in the deal for Jakob Chychrun last summer, has been solid with Chabot. The 22-year-old Sanderson started Saturday’s game against the Canucks with a plus/minus rating of minus-12. He has yet to be on the ice for an even-strength goal by the Senators. Making $8.05 million as the Senators’ defenceman with the highest salary-cap hit, Sanderson’s one goal and 10 assists have all come on special teams. He plays an average of 24 minutes 22 seconds per game for a club that needs more offence from its defencemen. The Senators only have three goals from their blue-line group, though, tied for the fewest in the 32-team league. Chychrun has outscored Ottawa’s defence by himself this season, with five goals for the Capitals. Trying to make the roster for the United States at the Four Nation’s tournament in Montreal and Boston in February, Sanderson has looked like someone who is feeling the weight of the pressure to impress U.S. team general manager Bill Guerin. One thing we’ve learned about Staios is that he’s patient and leaves no stone unturned before making a move. NHL executives told Postmedia on Saturday that Staios was kicking tires to see if there were any upgrades he could make to the Senators roster. That’s part of his responsibility. “Every general manager is doing their job by looking and seeing if there’s anything they can do,” Staios said. “But I can’t see one major area with this group because they’ve shown how they can play in a majority of the games this year that need to be addressed.” Ideally, Staios would like the answers to come from within. But people around the league wonder if Staios will make a move to get the players’ attention. He doesn’t want to make a change but, if this group doesn’t get its act together, he might have to do something. We’re getting to the point where many believe the time has come for Staios to strike at the core of the Senators. Let’s get this out of the way immediately, though: The Senators won’t trade Tkachuk because they’re trying to build this team around him. Other candidates in the core could be moved, however. Article content Many fans want Chabot dealt, but that wouldn’t happen without Ottawa eating part of his $10-million salary this season — it’s a charge of $8 million against the salary cap — and he has improved while playing with Jensen. He’s off to a strong start this season with eight goals and five assists for 13 points going into the gamea against the Canucks. He was moved to play with Perron and Amadio on the third line because Green felt Norris might be able to help those two players produce more offensively. With a cap hit of $7.95 million through the 2027-28 campaign, Norris has struggled to stay healthy and is coming off a third shoulder surgery. Before he had surgery last season, there was talk he may be moved and that chatter has surfaced again. “His lack of durability and his contract make sense that he would be a guy that they may think about moving,” a league executive said Saturday. If Pinto continues to progress and makes the strides the organization expects, he’ll want a healthy raise from the $3.75 million he will make next season. Article content We’ve learned through 20 games that Greig isn’t ready to be a top-six forward. Maybe the answer is to use him as the third-line centre with Norris on the wing. Anything is possible and there’s a lot of hockey left to be played. Staios is confident that, if he stays the course, this ship will steady itself, and he has to hope that’s indeed the case. Rather than consider whether the menu should include fried apples, braised collard greens, macaroni and cheese or roasted broccoli, relatives could slide into debate on the potential of tariffs igniting inflation. In lieu of conversation about whether pecan pie should be displaced by English toffee for dessert, diners might bicker about implications of Republicans simultaneously controlling the U.S. House and U.S. Senate. Clinical psychologists Greg Nawalanic and Jessica Hamilton, of the University of Kansas Health System, said supper-time strife could be reduced by taking a healthy approach to political differences. They recommended families and friends strive to set boundaries, be courteous, actively listen to others, express curiosity and focus on the big picture of a holiday associated with counting blessings. “If you are on the winning side, then that’s great for you. Have those feelings. Celebrate it. Maybe keep it inside of you. Talk to like-minded people about that,” Nawalanic said. “But when you have friends or family who were opposing, try to be gracious about it. Remember, they were just as invested as you were ... but now are very disappointed.” He said that during the two weeks after the Nov. 5 election about 90% of his counseling sessions were tied to ballot-box results. Hamilton said some of her patients were suffering anticipatory anxiety because they understood their personal political ideas didn’t align with others in the family. Some clients, she said, were experiencing political grief because a majority of voters didn’t see national, state or local candidates in the same way or took a contrary position on taxation, gambling or abortion questions. She said the desire of people to stand up for personal values made it difficult to accept the political opinions of rivals. One option on Thanksgiving was to not participate in political dialogue at the dinner table, she said. Those who do ought to take a deep breath before commenting to avoid escalating a rhetorical quarrel, she said. “If you want to engage, I would say engage in a way that is true to the kind of person that you want to be,” Hamilton said. “Are you wanting to be ‘right’ as far as politics go? Or, do you want to be understanding and recognize that there is a difference and be respectful?” She suggested individuals direct conversations toward poignant or humorous family stories and histories rather than squabble about political events capable of driving people apart. Hamilton said it would be acceptable for a Thanksgiving host to set ground rules in advance that precluded back-and-forth friction on political topics. Adults and children might be well-served by looking at election results through the lens of good sportsmanship, she said. “We teach our kids this,” she said. “Why aren’t we displaying that as adults? How can we be good sports and appreciate one another?” Nawalanic said the environment of some Thanksgiving gatherings could be compared to a visit to a dentist. It might not be pleasant, he said, but the agony was of limited duration. He said individuals consumed political news in different ways with some remaining glued to social media and others taking passive interest until Election Day. He said social media amplified discord during the 2024 elections. In the end, he said, technology played a larger role in this election because messaging left little room to calmly consider the range of candidates and issues. “We have to understand that when we go into these conversations there’s been an echo chamber that is so reinforced and impregnable,” Nawalanic said. “If you try to talk or communicate at your dinner table the way you’re doing it online — if you’re one of those little snipers who wants to nail you — let’s not do that.” He advised people to resist the temptation to sever family relationships based on results of November’s voting. Perhaps it would be best to explore more substantive reasons for contemplating closure of those doors, he said. “If you’re considering ending a relationship because of politics, it’s probably less about the politics and more about personality attributes in the way they’ve gone about it,” Nawalanic said. Nawalanic said it could be useful to snack before arriving for the big Thanksgiving meal, because hunger could trigger what he referred to episodes of “hanger” when controversial topics were broached. He said consumption of alcoholic beverages ought to be minimized at dinners where discord could arise because “wine is not adaptive coping.” He said it was important to remember this year’s snapshot of people around the dinner table was certain to change by next year. “Do you want to look back on this Thanksgiving and think, ‘It was such a nice, lovely family time together and a great meal,'” Nawalanic said. “Or, do you want to remember, ‘I burned her with that comment. When I said that, she felt it.'”
