SEATTLE (AP) — It wasn’t pretty, but the Seattle Seahawks pulled off a 6-3 slog of a victory Thursday over the Chicago Bears. The win featured an outstanding effort from Seattle's defense, a near disappearance from the offense and a game-sealing pick that ended Caleb Williams' rookie record for the most pass attempts without an interception at 353. The Seahawks sacked Williams seven times to tie the team’s season high as the Bears lost their 10th consecutive game in the lowest scoring contest of the season. The Bears had a chance to pull off an upset when they had the ball at Seattle's 40-yard line late in the fourth quarter, but Seahawks cornerback Riq Woolen picked off Williams with 20 seconds left. It was a nice bounce-back win for Seattle, but had little impact on their postseason outlook. The more important game will come Saturday, when the Los Angeles Rams and Arizona Cardinals face off with Seattle’s postseason fortunes on the line. A win by Arizona keeps the Seahawks in the hunt — but still needing a win over the Rams next weekend to clinch the NFC West. A Rams win this weekend would dash Seattle’s hopes as Los Angeles would win the tiebreaker over Seattle even if the Seahawks win the regular-season finale. “We’re in the mode of controlling what we can control,” coach Mike Macdonald said. “We know what’s coming next week. We’re going to spend this weekend getting our minds and bodies and spirits right to go play a game. "Yeah, we’re praying that it’s for the division championship.” What’s working Leonard Williams continues to be a force for the Seahawks. The defensive tackle dominated the Bears' offensive line with two of Seattle’s seven sacks, four quarterback hits and three tackles for loss. Williams been the key to Seattle’s defensive resurgence. A unit that was among the worst in the league earlier in the season has become one of the NFL's most productive in the second half with Williams' big-time impact up front being a major reason Seattle is still in the playoff hunt. “He should be up for all the accolades,” Macdonald said. “I don’t know what the awards are out there, but I would give it to him,” Macdonald said. “He’s just a phenomenal player, phenomenal human being. I’m glad he’s a Seahawk. Glad he’s with us.” What needs help Seattle’s offense was full of stops and starts, but two field goals proved to be enough. Geno Smith managed just 160 passing yards and nearly threw yet another interception in the red zone on Seattle’s first drive of the game. Zach Charbonnet and Kenny McIntosh combined for 103 yards on 22 carries, with McIntosh’s 25-yard first-quarter run marking Seattle’s longest offensive play of the day. Charbonnet, starting in place of the injured Kenneth Walker III, was held to just 3.8 yards per carry. Offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb has spent the season trying to figure out how to get the running game going, with little success. Stock up The Seahawks' defense put up a lockdown performance after struggling in losses against Green Bay and Minnesota, holding the Bears to just 179 yards of total offense and finishing with 10 quarterback hits. Along with Leonard Williams big day, Devon Witherspoon had six tackles with a sack and three tackles for loss as the Seahawks recaptured some of the momentum it had lost the past two weeks. Under constant pressure from Seattle’s pass rush, Caleb Williams threw for 122 yards, while completing 16 of 28 pass attempts. Stock down WR DK Metcalf. He had a tough day, with just three receptions for 43 yards. He also drew a pair of personal fouls on a single play, one coming after he head-butted Bears cornerback Tyrique Stevenson in the second quarter. Metcalf hasn’t had more than 70 yards receiving in a game since Seattle’s win over Atlanta on Oct. 20. He has only had more than four receptions in three games this year, and has just four touchdown catches in what has been a bit of a disappointing season for the sixth-year receiver. Injuries The Seahawks put Walker (ankle) on injured reserve Thursday, marking the end of his regular season. Walker has to miss at least the next four games, but could return if Seattle makes it deep into the playoffs. Key number 7 — Seattle’s seven sacks made it 67 on the year for Caleb Williams, 15 more than any other quarterback in the league and fourth-most in league history. Up next The Seahawks finish the regular season at the Los Angeles Rams on either Jan. 4 or 5. An online debate over foreign workers in tech shows tensions in Trump’s political coalition

TORONTO — Losses in the tech sector led Canada's main stock index lower Friday, while U.S. stock markets also fell. The S&P/TSX composite index ended down 50.42 points at 24,796.40. In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 333.59 points at 42,992.21. The S&P 500 index was down 66.75 points at 5,970.84, while the Nasdaq composite was down 298.33 points at 19,722.03. The Canadian dollar traded for 69.37 cents US, compared with 69.51 cents US on Tuesday. The February crude oil contract was up 98 cents at US$70.60 per barrel and the February natural gas contract was up six cents at US$3.38 per mmBTU. The February gold contract was down US$22 at US$2,631.90 an ounce and the March copper contract was down less than a penny at US$4.12 a pound. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 27, 2024. Companies in this story: (TSX:GSPTSE, TSX:CADUSD) The Canadian PressAs science continues its evolution, discoveries and technologies can act like a master key that open doors leading to novel advancements. Artificial intelligence is one such key, making innovations possible by solving complex problems, automating tasks and enabling research that would have been impossible, or very time-consuming, without it. Mohammad Hosseini But do we want to do research on all topics, and shall we try the AI master key on every door? To explore this question, let’s consider the use of AI by genomics experts as an example. In recent years, genomics experts have added unbelievable depth to what we know about the world and ourselves. For example, genetics researchers have revealed facts about when certain animals and plants were domesticated. In another example, researchers used DNA from 30,000-year-old permafrost to create fertile samples of a plant called narrow-leafed campion. Importantly, genetic engineering has facilitated extraordinary advances in the treatment of complicated conditions, such as sickle-cell anemia. Thanks to AI, we are witnessing a dramatic increase in the pace and scalability of genomic exploration. Listen now and subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Stitcher | RSS Feed | SoundStack | All Of Our Podcasts But given the risks and possible consequences of AI use in science, should we rush headlong into using AI in all kinds of projects? One relevant example is research on Neanderthals, our closest relatives, who lived about 40,000 years ago. Neanderthals have been studied for several years now through genetic investigation of their fossils and their DNA. Genetic engineering can potentially use ancient DNA and genome editing methods to re-create a Neanderthal or aspects of a Neanderthal’s genetics and physiology. To do this, scientists could start by figuring out the DNA sequence of a Neanderthal by comparing it with the DNA of modern humans, because they are closely related. Then, scientists could use the gene-editing tool known as CRISPR to swap out parts of human DNA with Neanderthal DNA. This process would require a lot of trial and error and might not succeed soon. But based on what we know about genetics, if something is possible, AI can help make it happen faster, cheaper and with less effort. Scientists are excited about these developments because they could facilitate new discoveries and open up many research opportunities in genetic research. With or without AI, research on Neanderthals will proceed. But the extraordinary power of AI could give the final push to these discoveries and facilitate this kind of resurrection. At that point, the scientific community must develop norms and guidelines about how to treat these resurrected beings with dispositions very similar to humans. We would need to carefully consider their rights and well-being almost in the same way as when humans are involved and not as research subjects or artifacts of scientific curiosity. These ethical issues are discussed in more detail in a new paper published in the journal Nature Machine Intelligence. A more holistic question to consider is: Should we prioritize the use of resource-intensive AI, researchers’ time and public funds to resurrect extinct beings? Or should we invest these resources into conserving species that are critically endangered today to prevent biodiversity from more degradation?Seahawks’ defense dominates in low-scoring win over BearsWelltower Inc. stock underperforms Wednesday when compared to competitors despite daily gains

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets wide receiver Davante Adams sat out practice Thursday with a hip ailment that makes his status for the game Sunday at Buffalo uncertain. Cornerback Sauce Gardner (hamstring), right tackle Morgan Moses (knee) and right guard Alijah Vera-Tucker (ankle) also were sidelined for the Jets' first full practice of the week. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who acknowledged Tuesday he's dealing with “a little MCL” issue in a knee but said “there's no way I'm not playing,” practiced fully. Adams was apparently injured in New York's 19-9 loss to the Los Angeles Rams last Sunday, when he had seven catches for 68 yards and a touchdown. Adams, acquired from Las Vegas in October, has 56 receptions for 719 yards and six touchdowns on 94 targets in nine games for the Jets. He's 72 yards away from his fifth straight 1,000-yard season and sixth of his career. Adams and Rodgers are also tied with Miami's Dan Marino and Mark Clayton for the third-most TD connections (82), including playoffs, by a quarterback-wide receiver duo. Gardner sat out the second half of the loss to the Rams with the hamstring injury and could miss the game against the Bills. He sat out one game after injuring a hamstring against Seattle in Week 14. It's unclear if the injuries are related. Moses and Vera-Tucker have been playing through their ailments the past several weeks. Defensive lineman Quinnen Williams, who missed the game last Sunday with a hamstring injury, was limited Thursday at practice, as were left guard John Simpson (calf), defensive end Haason Reddick (neck), safety Tony Adams (ankle), conerback Michael Carter II (back) and rookie defensive lineman Braiden McGregor (ankle).Kyne Lim —CONTRIBUTED PHOTO Kyne Lim is the regional business manager of Southeast Asia at Emma, the world’s largest direct-to-consumer sleep brand with revenue of $1 billion in 2023. He was the country head for the Philippines and Korea prior to his new assignment. In this interview, he shares insights into Emma’s entry into the Philippines. Question: What was Emma’s market entry strategy for the Philippines? How did you tailor your approach to fit the local market, and what challenges did you face? Answer: We had a twofold challenge in entering the Philippines: one, overcome top-of-mind brands that are synonymous with mattresses and two, differentiate ourselves from those available in the market. These are important because if people are not aware of your brand, then they won’t even consider you when they do want to make a purchase. READ: Playing to win: Entrepreneurship and the competitive spirit These were the areas we dedicated our efforts to. We mainly used social media and influencers to spread our key messages. We used these channels to not only inform potential customers that Emma exists, but also to educate them about what’s different about our product. An example is how our ads, even back then, were communicating our seven-zone technology and motional isolation technology. Marketing became a cornerstone of our market entry strategy to the point that we may have appeared too often for some people. Q: I researched Emma mattresses and found that they have multiple layers of foam, including memory foam and Airgocell foam. Briefly, why do people need these? How do they differ from what’s available locally? A: Our combination and configuration of these layers of foam and spring allow us to offer our seven-zone technology and our motion isolation technology. We believed these features would help us in the Philippines. To quickly explain, our seven-zone technology is a feature wherein your body part “sinks” to a different level depending on which part of the mattress you are. This is to allow your spine to remain aligned whatever your sleeping position may be. We were probably one of the first to market these technologies extensively to the public, so Emma stood out versus other available brands. Q: Emma undercuts the price of high-end imported mattresses. Beyond price, why should people consider Emma? A: Emma really values innovation; we value the technological part of our mattresses. Our mattresses undergo validation across these third-party test companies in Europe whose main job is to rigorously test mattresses across different dimensions. So, when we say, for example, our Diamond Degree graphite foam dissipates heat, these are backed up by testing. This is genuine. Our mattresses are also consistent award-winners in multiple countries, so Emma has both the technological proof and the social proof. Q: You are an online company with no physical store. How did you come up with this channel decision? A: Our principle is centered on customer satisfaction. By operating primarily online, we can offer a 100-day home trial period, allowing customers to experience our mattresses in their own environment and ensuring they make a fully informed decision. This is in contrast to in-store trials, which only last a minute or two. Additionally, we do have physical stores in Europe to be closer to our customers, and partner with wholesalers globally to reach those who prefer to try the mattress in-store before making a purchase. In the Philippines, our products can be found in showrooms like Abenson and Habitat. There are numerous factors to consider when establishing physical stores, including the costs of construction, rent and staffing. These expenses can be substantial, especially with multiple locations. By saving on these costs and investing in online marketing instead, we can pass the savings on to our customers. This strategy allows us to offer competitive prices compared with other international brands, making us an affordable premium brand. Q: Prospects can actually try Emma in some of your partner stores like Abenson Home and Habitat. How do you protect these retailers when you also encourage prospects to buy directly from you? A: It is a win-win partnership. The sleep market is gigantic; everyone that sleeps needs a mattress. They see our potential and instead of only acting as a competitor, they want to profit from our growth. By having our products, we bring traffic to their stores and if we grow, they grow. I believe both of us, Emma and our partner stores, recognize the reality that online purchase of goods is a recent phenomenon and that a sizable number would still choose to purchase offline given the chance. But, at the same time, for us, partnering up with retailers allows us to reach that customer that still prefers to buy it offline. To give more insight, we do have marketing activities that we do for our retailers, but even when we market normally, it has a trickle-down effect wherein people who are interested—but are not yet convinced of buying an Emma mattress online despite the 100-night trial—will still head to one of our retail partners to test out. In this sense, there is no clash at the moment. Q: How does the 100-night risk-free trial work? What is your return rate for online purchases compared with in-store purchases, and how does this compare with the 12-percent industry average? When do you offer a 100-night versus a 200-night risk-free trial? A: The 100-night trial is our guarantee wherein after you receive your order but are not satisfied with it, we’ll take back the mattress and refund you how much you bought it for within the next 100 nights. This stems from our belief that it takes more than just a few minutes to understand if a mattress is for you or not; you need to have slept on it for a few days or even weeks to really know if it suits you. Emma is a company that values that local insight–this is what has helped us grow wherever we set roots on. The team here surveyed the Philippines landscape and deemed the 100-night trial was the most effective duration. In fact, from those that returned their Emma products, we see that Filipinos tend to return them much earlier than 100 nights. To add though, what I can say is that our return rate is lower than the industry average, which is a good indicator for us that Emma’s products are being accepted by the market. Q: How has influencer marketing impacted your brand’s reach and customer engagement? What strategies have you found most effective in working with influencers? How do you measure its effectiveness? A: One of the things our company is good at is performance marketing. We think of ways to measure our marketing. When available, we use the platform’s available data. For example, if we use Facebook, they have Facebook Ads Manager that allows us to see this information. For influencers, it’s a mix of a few things. We have our own created attribution model, which is a mix of factors–part of it is the coupon code usage. For influencers, we ask them to also include a coupon code that they can share to their followers, so we’re able to measure performance through that. In addition, if we use influencers in our ads–we’d measure those ads’ performance too. We then put it all together, we have a better view of how this influencer was able to help us. We learned that in working with influencers, it is very important to play to our strengths. This means that instead of dictating 100 percent of the content, we work with their branding and their style to communicate the key messages that Emma wants to say. We follow and watch influencers because we enjoy the way they present after all. Q: Filipinos appear to be sleeping an average daily of six hours and 22 minutes, less than the seven hours recommended average. What should Filipinos know about quality sleep? A: Quality sleep is very important. We need good quality sleep to tackle the next day ahead. In the Philippines, we chose our influencers such as Kryz Uy, Small Laude, Anne Curtis-Smith–all of whom are personalities who demonstrate a tight schedule juggling different things. At Emma, we believe that they are able to perform at their 100 percent all day because of having a good-night sleep. Our mission statement is to “awaken your best,” because we believe in the power of good sleep. It allows you to rejuvenate not just your body, but also your mind–and that in return allows you to do your best in your day ahead, to achieve whatever you want to achieve. —CONTRIBUTED Disclosure: This interview had been requested by Emma but no compensation or other considerations were received in exchange. The governor of Georgia’s status as a Washington outsider helped him turn the page on a turbulent period for the US. Jimmy Carter’s ascent to the White House was something few people could have predicted when he was governor of the US state of Georgia. It was no different for Jimmy Carter in the early 1970s. It took meeting several presidential candidates and then encouragement from an esteemed elder statesman before the young governor, who had never met a president himself, saw himself as something bigger. He announced his White House bid on December 12 1974, amid fallout from the Vietnam War and the resignation of Richard Nixon. Then he leveraged his unknown, and politically untainted, status to become the 39th president. That whirlwind path has been a model, explicit and otherwise, for would-be contenders ever since. “Jimmy Carter’s example absolutely created a 50-year window of people saying, ‘Why not me?’” said Steve Schale, who worked on President Barack Obama’s campaigns and is a long-time supporter of President Joe Biden. Mr Carter’s journey to high office began in Plains, Georgia where he received end-of-life care decades after serving as president. David Axelrod, who helped to engineer Mr Obama’s four-year ascent from state senator to the Oval Office, said Mr Carter’s model is about more than how his grassroots strategy turned the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary into his springboard. “There was a moral stain on the country, and this was a guy of deep faith,” Mr Axelrod said. “He seemed like a fresh start, and I think he understood that he could offer something different that might be able to meet the moment.” Donna Brazile, who managed Democrat Al Gore’s 2000 presidential campaign, got her start on Mr Carter’s two national campaigns. “In 1976, it was just Jimmy Carter’s time,” she said. Of course, the seeds of his presidential run sprouted even before Mr Nixon won a second term and certainly before his resignation in August 1974. In Mr Carter’s telling, he did not run for governor in 1966, he lost, or in 1970 thinking about Washington. Even when he announced his presidential bid, neither he nor those closest to him were completely confident. “President of what?” his mother, Lillian, replied when he told her his plans. But soon after he became governor in 1971, Mr Carter’s team envisioned him as a national player. They were encouraged in part by the May 31 Time magazine cover depicting Mr Carter alongside the headline “Dixie Whistles a Different Tune”. Inside, a flattering profile framed Mr Carter as a model “New South” governor. In October 1971, Carter ally Dr Peter Bourne, an Atlanta physician who would become US drug tsar, sent his politician friend an unsolicited memo outlining how he could be elected president. On October 17, a wider circle of advisers sat with Mr Carter at the Governor’s Mansion to discuss it. Mr Carter, then 47, wore blue jeans and a T-shirt, according to biographer Jonathan Alter. The team, including Mr Carter’s wife Rosalynn, who died aged 96 in November 2023, began considering the idea seriously. “We never used the word ‘president’,” Mr Carter recalled upon his 90th birthday, “but just referred to national office”. Mr Carter invited high-profile Democrats and Washington players who were running or considering running in 1972, to one-on-one meetings at the mansion. He jumped at the chance to lead the Democratic National Committee’s national campaign that year. The position allowed him to travel the country helping candidates up and down the ballot. Along the way, he was among the Southern governors who angled to be George McGovern’s running mate. Mr Alter said Mr Carter was never seriously considered. Still, Mr Carter got to know, among others, former vice president Hubert Humphrey and senators Henry Jackson of Washington, Eugene McCarthy of Maine and Mr McGovern of South Dakota, the eventual nominee who lost a landslide to Mr Nixon. Mr Carter later explained he had previously defined the nation’s highest office by its occupants immortalised by monuments. “For the first time,” Mr Carter told The New York Times, “I started comparing my own experiences and knowledge of government with the candidates, not against ‘the presidency’ and not against Thomas Jefferson and George Washington. It made it a whole lot easier”. Adviser Hamilton Jordan crafted a detailed campaign plan calling for matching Mr Carter’s outsider, good-government credentials to voters’ general disillusionment, even before Watergate. But the team still spoke and wrote in code, as if the “higher office” were not obvious. It was reported during his campaign that Mr Carter told family members around Christmas 1972 that he would run in 1976. Mr Carter later wrote in a memoir that a visit from former secretary of state Dean Rusk in early 1973 affirmed his leanings. During another private confab in Atlanta, Mr Rusk told Mr Carter plainly: “Governor, I think you should run for president in 1976.” That, Mr Carter wrote, “removed our remaining doubts.” Mr Schale said the process is not always so involved. “These are intensely competitive people already,” he said of governors, senators and others in high office. “If you’re wired in that capacity, it’s hard to step away from it.” “Jimmy Carter showed us that you can go from a no-name to president in the span of 18 or 24 months,” said Jared Leopold, a top aide in Washington governor Jay Inslee’s unsuccessful bid for Democrats’ 2020 nomination. “For people deciding whether to get in, it’s a real inspiration,” Mr Leopold continued, “and that’s a real success of American democracy”.

Two of the league’s young quarterbacks looking to prove themselves meet Sunday afternoon in Foxborough as Anthony Richardson and the Colts (5-7) take on Drake Maye and the Patriots (3-9). The 2nd-year pro out of Florida, Richardson was benched earlier this season for a couple games before returning in impressive fashion completing 20 of 30 passes, throwing for 272 yards, and most importantly, leading the Colts to a 28-27 win over the Jets. However, Richardson was less than good last weekend against the Lions completing just 11 of 28 passes for 172 yards in a 24-6 loss to Detroit. Like Richardson in Indy, Drake Maye has had his ups and downs this season. The rookie out of North Carolina was also good two weeks ago in a 28-22 loss to the Rams completing 75% of his passes and throwing for 282 yards. However, the rookie out of North Carolina struggled last weekend. Like Richardson, accuracy has been a recurring issue for the young signal-caller. He completed just 22 of 37 passes at Miami in a loss to the Dolphins. Both Indianapolis and New England have much invested in these two young quarterbacks. I watched him hit so many game-winners, battle against the best that ever played and leaving it all out on the floor." Thompson shuts down a hater while signing autographs Thompson was having a good time signing autographs to the fans outside of an hotel in Portland, Oregon, as the were getting ready to battle the Sunday night. Everything was going smooth until a man wanted some attention and started screaming that he didn't care who Klay Thompson was or why were people were asking for his signature. "But you are over there watching, you bum. What are you talking about?" said, which was applauded by fans who cheered after hearing the basketball player. He's going to go down as one of the best shooters in the game. To be able to pass in the all-time three-pointers list is history." said the former NBA guard. "I'm going to keep the (game) ball and send the (game) jersey to Reggie and inscribe it because he meant that much to me," Thompson said. "I remember his battles with Mike and Kobe, taking a small-market team like the Pacers all the way to the NBA Finals and being in the East finals routinely and just being the standard for a what a shooting guard should look that. "Ever since I was a teenager I studied the way he moved without the ball. It's had a huge impact on my game. I remember my workout with the Knicks in 2011, (then-Knicks GM) Donnie Walsh said I reminded him of Reggie. That meant a lot to me."

Thanksgiving Weekend Sports Guide: Your roadmap to NFL matchups, other games, times, oddsThe long sports-filled Thanksgiving weekend is a time when many Americans enjoy gathering with friends and family for good food, good company and hopefully not too much political conversation. Also on the menu — all the NFL and college sports you can handle. Here's a roadmap to one of the biggest sports weekends of the year, with a look at marquee games over the holiday and how to watch. All times are in EST. All odds are by BetMGM Sportsbook. • NFL: There is a triple-header lined up for pro football fans. Chicago at Detroit, 12:30 p.m., CBS: Rookie quarterback Caleb Williams and the Bears go against the Lions, who are one of the favorites to reach the Super Bowl in February. Lions favored by 10. New York at Dallas, 4:30 p.m., Fox: The Giants and Cowboys are both suffering through miserable seasons and are now using backup quarterbacks for different reasons. But if Dallas can figure out a way to win, it will still be on the fringe of the playoff race. Cowboys favored by 3 1/2. Miami at Green Bay, 8:20 p.m., NBC/Peacock: The Packers stumbled slightly out of the gate but have won six of their past seven games. They'll need a win against Miami to try to keep pace in the NFC North. Packers favored by 3. • College Football: Memphis at No. 18 Tulane, 7:30 p.m., ESPN. If college football is your jam, this is a good warmup for a big weekend. The Tigers try to ruin the Green Wave’s perfect record in the American Athletic Conference. Tulane is favored by 14. Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes works in the pocket against the Carolina Panthers during the first half of Sunday's game in Charlotte, N.C. • NFL: A rare Friday showdown features the league-leading Chiefs. Las Vegas at Kansas City, 3 p.m. Prime Video: The Chiefs and quarterback Patrick Mahomes are 12-point favorites over the Raiders. • College Basketball: Some of the top programs meet in holiday tournaments around the country. Battle 4 Atlantis championship, 5:30 p.m., ESPN: One of the premier early season tournaments, the eight-team field includes No. 3 Gonzaga, No. 14 Indiana and No. 24 Arizona. Rady Children's Invitational, 6 p.m., Fox: It's the championship game for a four-team field that includes No. 13 Purdue and No. 23 Mississippi. • College Football: There is a full slate of college games to dig into. Oregon State at No. 11 Boise State, noon, Fox: The Broncos try to stay in the College Football Playoff hunt when they host the Beavers. Boise State favored by 19 1/2. Oklahoma State at No. 23 Colorado, noon, ABC: The Buffaloes and Coach Prime are still in the hunt for the Big 12 championship game when they host the Cowboys. Colorado favored by 16 1/2. Georgia Tech at No. 6 Georgia, 7:30 p.m., ABC: The Bulldogs are on pace for a spot in the CFP but host what could be a tricky game against rival Georgia Tech. Georgia favored by 19 1/2. • NBA. After taking Thanksgiving off, pro basketball returns. Oklahoma City at Los Angeles Lakers, 10 p.m., ESPN: The Thunder look like one of the best teams in the NBA's Western Conference. They'll host Anthony Davis, LeBron James and the Lakers. Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James dunks during the first half of a Nov. 23 game against the Denver Nuggets in Los Angeles. • College Football. There are more matchups with playoff implications. Michigan at No. 2 Ohio State, noon, Fox: The Wolverines are struggling one season after winning the national title. They could make their fan base a whole lot happier with an upset of the Buckeyes. Ohio State favored by 21. No. 7 Tennessee at Vanderbilt, noon, ABC: The Volunteers are a fairly big favorite and have dominated this series, but the Commodores have been a tough team this season and already have achieved a monumental upset over Alabama. Tennessee favored by 11. No. 16 South Carolina at No. 12 Clemson, noon, ESPN: The Palmetto State rivals are both hanging on the edge of the CFP playoff race. A win — particularly for Clemson — would go a long way toward clinching its spot in the field. Clemson favored by 2 1/2. No. 3 Texas at No. 20 Texas A&M, 7:30 p.m. ABC: The Aggies host their in-state rival for the first time since 2011 after the Longhorns joined the SEC. Texas favored by 5 1/2. Washington at No. 1 Oregon, 7:30 p.m., NBC: The top-ranked Ducks have been one of the nation’s best teams all season. They’ll face the Huskies, who would love a marquee win in coach Jedd Fisch’s first season. Oregon favored by 19 1/2. • NBA: A star-studded clash is part of the league's lineup. Golden State at Phoenix, 9 p.m., NBA TV: Steph Curry and the Warriors are set to face the Suns' Big Three of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal. • NFL: It's Sunday, that says it all. Pittsburgh at Cincinnati, 1 p.m., CBS: Joe Burrow is having a great season for the Bengals, who are struggling in other areas. They need a win to stay in the playoff race, hosting a Steelers team that's 8-3 and won five of their past six. Bengals favored by 3. Arizona at Minnesota, 1 p.m., Fox: The Cardinals are tied for the top of the NFC West while the Vikings are 9-2 and have been one of the biggest surprises of the season with journeyman Sam Darnold under center. Vikings favored by 3 1/2. Philadelphia at Baltimore, 4:25 p.m., CBS: Two of the league's most electric players will be on the field when Saquon Barkley and the Eagles travel to face Lamar Jackson and the Ravens. Ravens favored by 3. San Francisco at Buffalo, 8:20 p.m. NBC/Peacock: The 49ers try to get back to .500 against the Bills, who have won six straight. Bills favored by 7. • NBA. The best teams in the Eastern Conference meet in a statement game. Boston at Cleveland, 6 p.m., NBA TV: The defending champion Celtics travel to face the Cavs, who won their first 15 games to start the season. • Premier League: English soccer fans have a marquee matchup. F1 Qatar Grand Prix, 11 a.m., ESPN2 – It's the penultimate race of the season. Max Verstappen already has clinched his fourth consecutive season championship. Before the 2023 National Football League season started, it seemed inevitable that Bill Belichick would end his career as the winningest head coach in league history. He had won six Super Bowls with the New England Patriots and 298 regular-season games, plus 31 playoff games, across his career. Then the 2023 season happened. Belichick's Patriots finished 4-13, the franchise's worst record since 1992. At the end of the year, Belichick and New England owner Robert Kraft agreed to part ways. And now, during the 2024 season, Belichick is on the sideline. He's 26 wins from the #1 spot, a mark he'd reach in little more than two seasons if he maintained his .647 career winning percentage. Will he ascend the summit? It's hard to tell. Belichick would be 73 if he graced the sidelines next season—meaning he'd need to coach until at least 75 to break the all-time mark. Only one other NFL coach has ever helmed a team at age 73: Romeo Crennel in 2020 for the Houston Texans. With Belichick's pursuit of history stalled, it's worth glancing at the legends who have reached the pinnacle of coaching success. Who else stands among the 10 winningest coaches in NFL history? Stacker ranked the coaches with the most all-time regular-season wins using data from Pro Football Reference . These coaches have combined for 36 league championships, which represents 31.6% of all championships won throughout the history of pro football. To learn who made the list, keep reading. In all his tenures, he quickly built contenders—the three clubs he coached were a combined 17-31 the year before Reeves joined and 28-20 in his first year. Noll's Steelers remain the lone team to win four Super Bowls in six years, though Andy Reid and Kansas City could equal that mark if they win the Lombardi Trophy this season. After the league folded, the ballclub moved to the NFL in 1950, and Cleveland continued its winning ways, with Brown leading the team to championships in '50, '54, and '55. His Packers won titles across three decades, including the league's first three-peat from 1929-31. Notably, he experienced only one losing season during his first 27 years with Green Bay, cementing his legacy of consistent success. Zoe Saldaña Hopes Star Trek 4 Gets Done SoonAs a father of three young children, state Sen. Donovan Fenton has learned how to be patient. The Keene Democrat says he’ll likely have to use that skill a lot next year in the N.H. Senate, which is controlled by Republicans, 16-8. In this year’s session, the GOP had a 14-10 edge. In any case, Fenton, who represents much of the Monadnock Region, said in a recent interview that he is always ready to work across the political aisle on any bill, no matter the partisan split. Among those sitting across that aisle will be Ruth Ward, R-Stoddard, a five-term senator, whose district includes Acworth, Charlestown, Gilsum, Langdon, Marlow and Stoddard. One issue they differ on is the Education Freedom Accounts program, New Hampshire’s school voucher system. The program uses taxpayer dollars to pay for parents to send their children to private, religious or home schools, which Fenton says drains sorely needed money from public schools. Ward would like to see the program expanded. To qualify, a student’s family income may not exceed 350 percent of the poverty level, or $109,200 per year for a family of four. Ward, who chairs the Senate Education Committee, is the co-sponsor of a bill that would open Education Freedom Accounts to everybody, no matter how much they earn. “You should not need to undergo a means test for the program,” she said in an interview Thursday. “If you want to leave your local school and go somewhere else, you should be able to do that without having to worry about how much money you earn.” She acknowledged that proposals to expand the voucher system are contingent in part on the state’s revenue picture. Lawmakers will be drawing up a new, two-year budget next year. House Bill 1665, which would have increased the allowable income to qualify for the program, did not pass earlier this year. It would have upped that income amount to five times the federal poverty level, or $156,000 a year, and would have cost taxpayers $43.4 million, bringing the program’s annual price tag to $66 million. Fenton called it “an absolutely horrible bill.” He said the school voucher system lacks academic and financial accountability. “We have no idea if this program is successful,” he said. “Whereas when we spend money on public education, we audit it, we track it, we test it. This program has none of that.” On other topics, Fenton said he will be backing legislation in 2025 to promote housing stability, improve veterans’ benefits, make free lunches available to more public school students and increase funding for rail trails. He is also supporting creation of a study committee to look at the problem of school bullying. These bills are in the proposal stage and actual legislative wording is not available yet. Fenton, who was reelected in November to his second Senate term, also said he will be supporting a renewed legislative attempt by Rep. Terry Roy, R-Deerfield, to have the state join most others in reporting to the national background check system when courts have determined that a person poses a danger to themselves or others. Such people are prohibited under federal law from acquiring or possessing a gun, and the national system would advise a gun seller not to go through a transaction in these cases. Roy’s bill passed the N.H. House this year but died in the Senate. Ward joined other Senate Republicans in a party-line vote to table the bill, removing it from further consideration. She is co-sponsoring proposals for the next legislative session that would invalidate out-of-state driver’s licenses issued to undocumented immigrants. “If you have somebody here who is not a legal citizen but has a driver’s license issued by another state that is more lenient than New Hampshire, I think we indeed need to take a good look at that issue,” Ward said. She has also signed on to a proposal that would raise the minimum age for sports betting in New Hampshire. That age now is 18, while most states set it at 21. “A lot of kids get hooked on this kind of betting,” Ward said. “They are spending a lot of money and sometimes get into trouble with their finances with that.” On a different educational issue, N.H. House Speaker Sherman Packard, R-Londonderry, is backing an effort next year to create “a parental bill of rights,” the third time over the past two years that this kind of legislation has been proposed. Ward has been supportive of such legislation, while Fenton has been adamantly against. Such bills are aimed at protecting or strengthening parental rights as related to their public school students. Proponents argue that this would ensure they are properly informed of what their child is experiencing at school. Opponents say parents already have the rights being sought, and that these measures, nevertheless, would put school teachers and administrators in untenable situations. The N.H. DETAILS OF THE CASE: The alleged representations in this action concern Wolfspeed’s Mohawk Valley, New York fabrication facility. The complaint alleges that defendants provided the public with revenue projections that depended on the Mohawk Valley fabrication facility ramping its production to meet and/or exceed demand for its 200mm wafer product. According to the lawsuit, defendants provided these overwhelmingly positive statements to investors while simultaneously misrepresenting and/or concealing material adverse facts concerning the true state of Wolfspeed’s growth potential and, in particular, the operational status and profitability of the Mohawk Valley fabrication facility. First, to meet its publicly stated projections, Wolfspeed would have to cancel or otherwise indefinitely suspend planned future projects such as the facility in Saarland, Germany. Second, Wolfspeed would have to terminate a significant portion of its workforce and shutter its Durham, North Carolina fabrication facility. When the true details entered the market, the lawsuit claims that investors suffered damages.
