So ideally, I think that the biggest thing would be to federally pass something that says this is what a woman is.” Scanlan a day earlier was part of a panel where U.S. Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kan., announced that Republicans plan to soon introduce legislation to “protect children from transgender medical procedures.” A report from the advocacy group Do No Harm released four weeks before Election Day included documented evidence of such activity being performed on a 7-year-old . “We’ll be introducing the STOP Act soon,” said Marshall . “We are going to use the Commerce Act to punish people who perform any type of surgery, or who use any type of medications on minors.” STOP is an acronym for Safeguarding the Overall Protection of Minors. The panel said that the legislation is an important and necessary step to protect children. Scanlan and Marshall, a host with the American Principles Project, were on the panel alongside U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala.; U.S. Rep. Mary Miller, R-Ill.; Terry Schilling, president of the American Principles Project; and Sarah Parshall Perry, senior legal fellow at the Heritage Foundation. “We all know by now that so-called gender affirming care is anything but caring,” Tuberville said. “It is pure insanity and has caused irreversible damage to countless children. This isn’t about politics, this is about good and evil.” Scanlan is an ambassador for Independent Women's Voice and a former collegiate swimmer at the University of Pennsylvania. Swimming for the Quakers, she and teammates endured being not only on the same team but in the same locker room as a swimmer who for the first three years swam on the men's team. “I was a swimmer at the University of Pennsylvania and the administration, the university and the NCAA said , ‘Here's a man who wants to swim on your team, please accept him,’” she explained during the panel. “This entire situation really made all female athletes feel isolated and alone, and like they know where to go.” Scanlan said that it wasn’t just competing that isolated the female athletes. “Eighteen times per week, my teammates and I were forced to undress next to a 6-foot-4, fully-intact male,” Scanlan said. “As a female athlete, this was just something I couldn't even imagine. It was something I never imagined would happen to me when I went off to college.” The STOP Act is one of a few beginnings. U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., has proposed legislation seeking to protect women’s spaces on all federal property nationwide. This would include bathrooms, locker rooms and prisons. Scanlan said this shows that public opinion is on the side of her and the panel. “This is really the first time we're seeing more of these people in power stepping up and actually doing the right thing and saying enough is enough” she said. “Now, we are looking at entire teams that are feeling empowered to be able to boycott ... or object to competing against males. It's widespread.” A notable case of that is San Jose State, where Blaire Fleming's participation has led to seven opponents forfeiting rather than playing a women's team that includes a man saying he is a woman. Tuberville and Marshall emphasized they believe the majority of Americans would agree with the proposed legislation. "The American people are sick of this nonsense," Tuberville said . "It’s time we restore some sanity and get common sense back in this country." Scanlan said that while she supports the national legislation Republicans are considering, it is important for states to also continue to pass legislation. “I always remind people who are really excited about having a presidency that we don't know what might happen in four years," she said. "So, of course, it's also important to codify this in states. We are going to continue our efforts. There's still a lot of work to be done, and I don't really see it as a win until we've finished this on the state level.” Get any of our free email newsletters — news headlines, sports, arts & entertainment, state legislature, CFD news, and more.
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Getting blown out at Green Bay following another squandered late lead the previous week against Seattle has quickly turned the San Francisco 49ers from a Super Bowl contender into a team just fighting to get back to the playoffs. If San Francisco doesn't get healthy and eliminate the errors that led to Sunday's 38-10 loss to the Packers, the focus will turn from playoff permutations to what offseason changes are necessary. “I think everyone understands completely outside and inside what the situation is,” coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday. “That’s why the Seattle game was so tough of a loss and that’s why last night was even worse. We know what we got ahead of us. We know exactly what the playoff situation is. That is what it is. But really, all that matters is this week when you do need to go on a run and put a lot of wins to even think of that.” The task doesn't get any easier as the Niners (5-6) get set to play at Buffalo on Sunday night. The 49ers are hoping to get injured stars Brock Purdy , Nick Bosa and Trent Williams back for that game, but their presence alone won't fix everything that went wrong on Sunday . The defense got repeatedly gashed early and put San Francisco in a 17-0 hole before the offense even generated a first down. The running game never got going as Christian McCaffrey has looked nothing like the 2023 Offensive Player of the Year in his three games back from Achilles tendinitis. And whenever the Niners appeared to do something right, a penalty came back to haunt them. It added up to the most lopsided loss for San Francisco since the 2018 season, before Shanahan had turned the Niners into perennial contenders. “It’s probably one of the worst ones I’ve been a part of,” linebacker Fred Warner said. “It is embarrassing. You’ve got to take it on the chin, take it like a man and move on.” Despite the doom and gloom, the 49ers are only one game behind Seattle and Arizona in the NFC West standings with six games to go. But San Francisco already has three division losses and a difficult schedule featuring games against the Bills this week and Detroit in Week 17. “My optimism is not broken by any means,” tight end George Kittle said. “We still have a lot of very talented players. We will get some guys back and I still have full trust in the coaching staff to put our guys in position to make plays. I have no worry about that. But definitely an uphill grind. We'll see what we’re made of, which I’m looking forward to.” Red-zone passes to Kittle. Backup QB Brandon Allen connected on a 3-yard TD pass to Kittle late in the second quarter for San Francisco's only TD. Kittle leads the NFL with eight touchdown catches in the red zone, which is tied with Vernon Davis (2013) for the most in a season for a Niners player since 2000. Kittle was the only consistent part of the San Francisco offense with six catches for 82 yards. Avoiding penalties. San Francisco had nine penalties for 77 yards and they were costly and sloppy. The Niners had 12 men on the field on defense on back-to-back plays, three false starts, a pass interference in the end zone and three penalties on special teams, including a holding on Eric Saubert that negated an 87-yard kickoff return by Deebo Samuel to open the second half. Rookie Dominick Puni had three penalties after being penalized just once in the first 10 games. DE Leonard Floyd. There were few positive performances on defense, but Floyd had both of the team's sacks. Run defense. San Francisco allowed 169 yards rushing, including 87 in the first quarter for the team's second-worst performance in the opening quarter since 1991. The Niners missed 19 tackles, according to Pro Football Focus, as Josh Jacobs gained 83 of his 106 yards rushing after contact. Purdy took part in a light throwing session without pain on Monday and Shanahan is hopeful he can return to practice Wednesday after missing the Green Bay game with a shoulder injury. ... Bosa (hip, oblique) and Williams (ankle) also could return this week after sitting out Sunday. ... LG Aaron Banks, DT Jordan Elliott and WR Jacob Cowing all in the concussion protocol. ... RG Dominick Puni (shoulder) and CB Deommodore Lenoir (knee) underwent MRIs on Monday and the team is waiting for results. ... CB Renardo Green (neck) and LB Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles (knee) are day to day. 11 — The Niners generated only 11 first downs, tied for the fewest in any game in eight seasons under Shanahan. They also had 11 in the 2022 NFC title game loss at Philadelphia when Purdy hurt his elbow and in Week 2 against Seattle in Shanahan's first season in 2017. The 49ers visit Buffalo on Sunday night. Who was it?” he asked the crowd who remained silent. Realising he would not get an answer, the Grammy-winning artist then said: “Don’t throw s*** at concerts, huh!” prompting cheers from the audience. The Something in the Orange singer added, “And if you guys do know who threw it, we can get them out of here — if we ever find out who did it.” The incident sparked mixed reactions online after a fan-recorded video was shared across all social media platforms. Some criticised Bryan’s response, with one user calling him “such a baby” and another saying, “his 15 minutes are over”. “Whoever threw it had everyone sign an NDA, we’ll never know,” one teased. “Dude is losing it,” another said. “Nobody’s getting hurt, chill and have a good time,” a third chimed in. But others came to his defence, declaring nobody deserved to have things thrown at them. “I’ll never understand you paying for the concert and throwing something at the artist ... am I missing something here?” one asked. “Regardless of what you think of him, just don’t throw s*** at any artist during a concert. If not for the artist, at least for the people around you,” a second agreed. The controversy follows recent allegations made by Bryan’s former partner, Barstool Sports podcaster Brianna LaPaglia, known as Chickenfry, regarding their tumultuous relationship. Bryan and LaPaglia dated from July 2023 to October 2024. Following their breakup, LaPaglia accused Bryan of emotional abuse, claiming he took their shared cat, Stump, out of spite. She also alleged he was unfaithful, stating he picked out an engagement ring for her while “cheating the whole time”. LaPaglia later threatened to release footage of Bryan allegedly throwing objects at her, criticising him for posting photos of their shared pet online. “If this man posts this fing cat one more time, then I’m gonna post videos of you whipping s*** at my face,” she said on Instagram November 17. Bryan, for his part, has not publicly responded to the accusations. LaPaglia suggested on her BFFs podcast that his silence is strategic, as he knows she has evidence to back her claims. The fallout from their relationship has divided fans. Some defended Bryan, citing his music and public persona, while others have expressed concern or disapproval over LaPaglia’s allegations.
By Renju Jose and Byron Kaye SYDNEY (Reuters) -Australia moved closer on Wednesday to banning social media for children under 16 after the parliament's lower house passed a bill even as Alphabet's Google and Facebook-owner Meta pressed the government to delay the legislation. Marking some of the toughest social media controls in the world, Australia's House of Representatives passed the bill 102 votes to 13 after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's centre-left Labor government secured bipartisan support for the ban. The Senate is expected to debate the bill later on Wednesday, with the government keen to ensure it is passed by the end of the parliamentary year on Thursday. Albanese, trying to lift his approval ratings ahead of an election expected in May, has argued that excessive use of social media poses risks to the physical and mental health of children and is looking for support from parents. The planned law would force social media platforms to take reasonable steps to ensure age-verification protections are in place. Companies could be fined up to A$49.5 million ($32 million) for systemic breaches. Australia plans to trial an age-verification system that may include biometrics or government identification to enforce the ban. A Senate committee backed the bill this week, but also inserted a condition that social media platforms should not force users to submit personal data such as passport and other digital identification to prove their age. The committee added that the government must "meaningfully engage" with youth when framing the law. "Young people, and in particular diverse cohorts, must be at the centre of the conversation as an age restriction is implemented to ensure there are constructive pathways for connection," committee Chair Senator Karen Grogan said. In submissions to parliament, Google and Meta said the ban should be delayed until the age-verification trial finishes, expected in mid-2025. Bytedance's TikTok said the bill needed more consultation, while Elon Musk's X said the proposed law might hurt children's human rights. IMPACT ON FAMILIES The ban was first announced during an emotionally charged parliamentary inquiry into social media, which included testimony from parents of children who had self-harmed due to cyber bullying. It has fuelled vigorous debate with youth advocates arguing it robs children of a voice and parent groups saying under-16s are too young to navigate the digital world. Teenagers have said the law could cut them off from their most important social and family connections, arguing a ban is not the solution. "I understand that using social media a lot is not a good thing and I'm working on it," said Sydney high-school student Enie Lam, 16. "But a ban is not going to work," she said. Albanese's party, which does not control the Senate, won crucial support from the opposition conservatives for the bill, but has failed to win over the left-leaning Greens and some far-right lawmakers on civil liberties and privacy grounds. One conservative lower house member broke from their party and voted against the bill on Wednesday, a rare event in Australian politics, and two conservative senators said they also would vote against it, arguing the law should be delayed until the age-verification trial was complete. Even the Australian Human Rights Commission, an independent statutory authority, opposed the ban saying it violated children's rights to self-expression and to participate in society. Still, polling shows public support overwhelmingly in favour of the move. A YouGov survey released this week showed 77% of Australians backed the ban, up from 61% in August. Australian media, from the publicly owned Australian Broadcasting Corp to Rupert Murdoch's News Corp, also support the ban. An editorial campaign by News Corp, the country's biggest newspaper publisher, pushed for the ban under the banner "Let Them Be Kids". "Our members feel that this is one of the biggest issues impacting on themselves and their families at the moment," said Jenny Branch-Allen, president of the Australian Parents Council, an advocacy group. "Big companies have to start taking responsibility. Let's try and reduce the incidents we're hearing involved with social media and young people in Australia." Cowboys G Zack Martin, CB Trevon Diggs out vs. CommandersThe Orlando Pride capped off a nearly perfect 2024 season by winning the NWSL Championship Game over the Washington Spirit 1-0. Despite the Spirit giving the Pride everything they could handle , Orlando held on to win the title. It was a fitting end for the team’s leader, Marta , and the team that was clearly the best in the NWSL all season. The Pride opened the season with a 23-match unbeaten streak, which included two separate winning streaks of six games or more. Orlando didn’t lose a game until after clinching the NWSL Shield and the top seed in the playoffs. With just two losses all season, it was one of the most dominant seasons in NWSL history. THE BEST TEAM IN @NWSL HISTORY 🏆 pic.twitter.com/60vGL6QEiU Of course, all of that gets wiped out when the calendar flips to 2025. The Pride will have to start fresh next season, just like everybody else. The only difference is that Orlando will have a championship to defend and be the hunted rather than the hunted. Is the Pride capable of replicating this year’s success in 2025? Let’s look at what the future holds for Orlando next season. Will Marta play for Orlando Pride in 2025? The biggest question facing Orlando heading into the offseason is whether or not Marta will be back next season. After eight seasons with the club, she’s out of contract and set to be a free agent. She has made it clear that she would like to play for two more seasons at club level, although there is no assurance she will do so in Orlando. The Pride would hate to lose her after so many years of rebuilding around her . However, it’ll be up to the club to offer her a new contract and up to Marta if she wants to finish her career with Orlando or go elsewhere. MARTA IS THE MOMENT. pic.twitter.com/dVLKToqdon Orlando Pride free agency questions Besides Marta, the Pride doesn’t have to worry too much about losing key players in free agency. Key role players like Julie Doyle and Morgan Gautrat re-signed with the club before reaching free agency at the end of the season, so they will be back in 2025. Players like Duljan Evelina, Celia Jimenez, and Carrie Lawrence, none of whom played major roles in Orlando’s 2024 success, are out of contract. But other than Marta, the Pride isn’t set to lose anybody who figures to be irreplaceable. Barbra Banda could be better in 2025 Whether Marta returns to Orlando or not, it’s a safe bet that Banda will remain the Pride’s most important player. She finished second in the NWSL in goals this season and was named Championship Game MVP after scoring the game-winning goal against the Spirit. Yet, the 24-year-old could still take things to another level next season. Keep in mind that she didn’t play during the early part of the season since she signed in early March from a club in China. With a year of experience in the NWSL under her belt, Banda could be better in 2025 and should be considered an early favorite to be league MVP next year. PURE BANDA-MONIUM!!! Barbra Banda scores the opening goal in the #NWSLChampionship pic.twitter.com/5oK0B1h50m Orlando Pride defense could look the same The backline of Cori Dyke, Emily Sams, Kylie Strom, and Kerry Abello figures to be back for the Pride in 2025. That quartet started together more times than not, helping Orlando tie for the fewest goals conceded during the NWSL regular season. For her efforts, Sams was named the NWSL Defender of the Year, which is no small accomplishment with arguably the world’s best defender, Naomi Girma, as her competition. The kicker is that the 32-year-old Strom is the only player of that foursome who will be older than 25 at the start of next season. In other words, Orlando’s backline is young and already has plenty of experience playing together. That should make the Pride one of the best defensive teams in the league next season, especially with Anna Moorhouse defending the goal. Orlando’s young player to watch Aside from the youthful backline, Orlando has a few more young players worth watching in 2025. Ally Lemos, the team’s first-round pick in 2024, could strengthen Orlando’s midfield even more. She played just two seasons at UCLA before being drafted, making her one of the youngest players ever selected in the NWSL Draft. She didn’t see a ton of minutes for Orlando this season, partly because she left the Pride midseason to play in the Under-20 Women’s World Cup. Lemos helped the U.S. finish third in that tournament and seems to have a bright future. She could be a breakout star for Orlando in 2025. Can the Orlando Pride repeat as NWSL champions in 2025? The question of Orlando repeating as champs will be easier to answer once it’s clear if Marta is returning or not. However, even without the legendary Brazilian, the Pride has the makings of a championship team in 2025 with a trusted goalkeeper, a solid and proven backline, and a bonafide star like Banda leading the attack. Of course, Washington could be stronger next season, Gotham FC still has as much star power as anyone, and teams like Kansas City and Portland figure to be contenders, too. There could also be plenty of player movement in free agency. But as things stand, there is every reason to think Orlando will be a threat to repeat as NWSL champs in 2025.
