WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump said Thursday he will nominate former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi to lead the Justice Department, turning to a longtime ally after his first choice, Matt Gaetz, withdrew his name from consideration amid scrutiny over sex trafficking allegations. Bondi has been an outspoken defender of Trump. She was one of his lawyers during his first impeachment trial, when he was accused — but not convicted — of abusing his power as he tried to condition U.S. military assistance to Ukraine on that country investigating then-former Vice President Joe Biden. And she was among a group of Republicans who showed up to support Trump at his New York hush money criminal trial that ended in May with a conviction on 34 felony counts. “For too long, the partisan Department of Justice has been weaponized against me and other Republicans — Not anymore,” Trump said in a social media post. “Pam will refocus the DOJ to its intended purpose of fighting Crime, and Making America Safe Again.” Gaetz stepped aside amid continued fallout over a federal sex trafficking investigation that cast doubt on his ability to be confirmed as the nation’s chief federal law enforcement officer. The hasty withdrawal by Gaetz and quick pivot to Bondi were the latest examples of Trump’s tumultuous decision-making as he rushes out nominations — some of questionable character and credentials — at a breakneck pace without the government vetting that is typical of presidential transitions. It’s an omen that despite running his most organized campaign for the White House this year, his return to the Oval Office might feature the same sort of drama that permeated his first term. Trump’s son Donald Trump Jr. told Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures” that the transition team had backups in mind for his controversial nominees should they fail to get confirmed. Still, even in Trump’s world, things moved fast. Trump had been seeking to capitalize on his decisive election win to force Senate Republicans to accept provocative selections like Gaetz. The decision could heighten scrutiny on other controversial Trump nominees, including Pentagon pick Pete Hegseth, who faces sexual assault allegations that he denies. “While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition,” Gaetz said in a statement one day after meeting with senators in an effort to win their support. “There is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle, thus I’ll be withdrawing my name from consideration to serve as Attorney General. Trump’s DOJ must be in place and ready on Day 1,” he added. President Yoon Suk Yeol, who appeared likely to be impeached over his actions, imposed martial law late Tuesday out of frustration with the opposition, vowing to eliminate “anti-state” forces as he struggles against opponents who control parliament and that he accuses of sympathizing with communist North Korea. Police and military personnel were seen leaving the grounds of parliament following the bipartisan vote to overrule the president, and the declaration was formally lifted around 4:30 a.m. during a Cabinet meeting. Parliament acted swiftly after martial law was imposed, with National Assembly Speaker Woo Won Shik declaring that the law was “invalid” and that lawmakers would “protect democracy with the people.” In all, martial law was in effect for about six hours. OKLAHOMA CITY — Along with other states, Oklahoma has recorded some limited progress in reducing confirmed cases of child abuse and neglect in recent years, but it still ranks among the worst in the nation for its care of the most vulnerable babies, children and teens. According to the 2024-2028 Oklahoma State Plan for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect , presented Friday during a meeting of the Oklahoma Commission on Children and Youth, the state has one of the highest child maltreatment rates in the nation, at 14.2 cases per 1,000 children — roughly double the national rate of 7.7. That’s despite an 11.8% decline in the number of cases confirmed in the state since 2018. According to the report, 13,546 cases of child abuse or neglect were confirmed in Oklahoma in 2022. Maltreatment represents more than just an immediate physical threat to infants and children. According to a U.S. Centers for Disease Control report , the estimated national “lifetime economic burden” associated with confirmed cases of child abuse and neglect in 2018 was set at $592 billion, a cost that would rival that of high-profile public health problems like heart disease. Victims often are burdened with health and emotional problems throughout their lifetimes, and taxpayers may end up covering costs for remedial education or long-term welfare. Other expensive social costs relate to problems like higher rates of alcohol and drug abuse and lost workplace productivity. The lifetime cost of maltreatment cases confirmed in Oklahoma in 2018 was estimated at $12.7 billion. As part of generating the 2024-2028 strategy plan, the health department, in partnership with the OCCY and Oklahoma Human Services, conducted a statewide survey of parents in need along with local program coordinators and other professionals to gauge how the state might make systemic improvements. “We received responses from all 77 counties,” Gibson said. Among other things, the survey revealed the need to invest more in services, especially in rural areas. The demand for affordable child care is especially acute. Additionally, efforts should be made improve access to help when families need it, and professionals should adopt more of a “prevention approach and mindset” to programming and training. The strategy plan also reflects that the state should attack child maltreatment more broadly, by acting more aggressively to reduce poverty and other related adverse childhood experiences. It has been reported that more than 1 in 5 adult Oklahomans experienced four or more adverse childhood experiences, such as witnessing domestic violence or experiencing racial discrimination. According to 2023 Kids Count Data from the Annie E. Casey Foundation, 30% of Oklahoma children have parents who lack secure employment, 25% live in families burdened by high housing costs and 21% can be classified as living in poverty. The plan also notes a need to better align education, health care, social services and justice platforms to create a more coordinated response to child maltreatment. Goals should be to “scale up” proven prevention programs and services, to invest more in family support, and to provide technical assistance to initiate or better develop local programming and increase local awareness of programming. The report notes serious challenges related to “flat” state agency budgets. “What we came up with was infrastructure investment, alignment and coordination, family support and resource connection, public awareness and engagement and community action and empowerment,” Gibson said. “We’re starting to tackle some of these goals already. ... Stratford’s Lauren Manders was the fastest Canadian woman and 10th fastest woman overall in the 25-29 age group at the recent World Triathlon Championships in Torremolinos, Spain. But there was more to her story. Two days before she was set to fly overseas, Manders was hit by a car while on her bike on a highway outside of Stratford. The driver, who was later charged, accelerated out of a stop sign and smashed into the back end of Manders’ ride. “I’m lucky to be alive,” she said. “It could have been a lot worse. It went through my mind that two years of training were out the window.” Battered and bruised, doctors cleared Manders to compete, though her bike needed emergency repairs to replace both tires and other parts before it accompanied her to Europe. “It goes to show you can do everything right and something always happens,” she said. The crash nearly derailed Manders’ progress after competing in her first triathlon in 2017. She finished 35th among women in her age group that year, a feat that was surpassed in 2023 when she placed 17th in Germany. Manders’ expectations were even higher this time. Regimented workouts with Luke Veens from the Stratford Performance Academy over the past 24 months left her feeling physically and mentally strong leading up to the 2024 event. “It’s always nice going into a race feeling like you couldn’t do anything more to prepare yourself,” she said. “I’ve done races in the past where you’re not prepared and you can feel that mentally. With this race . . . I knew I was looking really good for worlds this year.” Manders completed the one-kilometre swim before jumping on her rebuilt bike for 20 kilometres. She navigated mental roadblocks and multiple crashes on the technical course before finishing the race with a five-kilometre run in less than 20 minutes, which was another goal. “That was not a fun race. It was very painful,” she said. “It wasn’t the bike that won me the race, it was the run. I was working really hard this summer on getting my run faster, and that’s what came through on race day.” The 29-year-old qualified for next year’s triathlon worlds in Australia but is instead going to focus on training for a Half Ironman in 2025, an event that includes two kilometres of swimming, 90 kilometres on the bike and a 21-kilometre run. After what she’s overcome, don’t bet against Manders’ resilience. “I didn’t let myself process the car accident until after the race,” she said. “What was more satisfying was all my hard work coming together on the day. “Everything was worth it. I’ve never dug so deep in a race before, and that was worth it to me.”

Crisis, what crisis? Before this month’s international break, Arsenal ’s season felt like it was teetering on the edge - but this win over Sporting CP showed how they have found their groove. The right-back has been one of the Gunners’ most consistent performers in recent seasons, but Jurrien Timber is showing how he could thrive in his absence . The Dutchman impressed in last weekend’s win over Nottingham Forest, when he had a goal ruled out for offside, and he was excellent against Sporting. Jimmy Carter was a president, a peacemaker, a public health champion — and my friend. When he left the White House, Carter used the power of his name, character and influence to work on challenges that were too obscure or daunting for others to deal with. I believe he did it because he felt it was the right thing to do. His humble beginnings as a farm boy in southern Georgia helped him relate to the challenges and aspirations of everyday people, respectfully partnering with them to improve their own lives. I worked closely with Carter as vice president for health programs at the Carter Center and later as special adviser to the center’s Guinea Worm Eradication Program. I traveled with him to various places, mostly in Africa, an average of once a year from 1988 to 2010. Those trips involved long flights and sometimes lengthy rides to remote villages, giving us ample opportunity to talk about everything from birding to boatbuilding to genealogy. In 2007, we flew separately — he from Atlanta and I from Chicago, where I live — to start a visit to four countries. My flight ran into trouble early and had to return to O’Hare International Airport. It was unnerving. When my wife, Ernie, and I finally arrived in Ghana a day late, Carter greeted me with a big hug. I suffered a near-fatal heart attack in early 2015. Later that year, I was sitting outside a Carter Center conference room, waiting for a meeting to begin, when Carter and his Secret Service detail strode by on their way to his office. I expected only a wave, but he diverted his course and came over to give me another warm embrace. The last time I saw Cater and his wife, Rosalynn, was at their 75 th wedding anniversary celebration in 2021 in Plains, Georgia. He was frail after a recent hospital stay, but he soldiered on. He didn’t just shake my hand; he kissed it. Carter’s kindness belied his physical and mental toughness. During our final trip together, to South Sudan in 2010, he and his wife had contracted a stomach ailment in Khartoum, but he pushed through it and attended a series of political meetings in Juba. The next day, we took a very long drive in brutal heat to survey the Guinea worm situation in Terekeka, and he confessed to me, “I would not have been able to do this trip yesterday.” Carter used his toughness strategically. In 1995, during the Sudanese civil war, I was on the trip when he persuaded John Garang, leader of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army/Movement, to agree to a humanitarian ceasefire. Accompanied by CNN’s bureau chief from Nairobi, Carter presented his truce proposal to a reluctant President Omar al-Bashir. He warned al-Bashir that he was going to announce that Garang agreed to the truce; he gave al-Bashir the option of showing the world that he either agreed to a humanitarian ceasefire or insisted on war. Al-Bashir caved, and together they announced the famed “Guinea worm ceasefire” that night. Carter and his wife witnessed their first Guinea worm cases during a visit to two villages in Ghana in 1988. “We really need to do more to help these people,” he said. The Carter Center, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and UNICEF acted immediately, and a year later, there were almost no cases in those villages. However, by 2006, the Ghana program was struggling. A pumping station in Savelugu had broken down, leaving people exposed to potentially contaminated drinking water, and officials had failed to repair it. Carter was very angry, as was I. In August 2006, we invited Ghanaian health officials to Atlanta, where Carter questioned them sharply. He warned them that he planned to visit in six months. That lit a fire under them to get the pumping station fixed and reform the program. Unfortunately, the complacency of 2006 led to a large outbreak in January 2007, with more than 1,000 cases in Savelugu, including many children. Carter witnessed the disaster firsthand the following month. At a news conference, he threatened to rename the disease “Ghana worm.” In 2008, Ghana reduced its cases by 85%. His more than two dozen books included nonfiction, poetry, fiction, religious meditations and a children’s story. His memoir “An Hour Before Daylight” was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2002, while his 2006 best-seller “Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid” stirred a fierce debate by likening Israel’s policies in the West Bank to the brutal South African system of racial segregation. Biden converted the sentences of 37 federal death row inmates to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. The inmates include people who were convicted in the slayings of police, military officers and federal prisoners and guards. Others were involved in deadly robberies and drug deals. Three inmates will remain on federal death row: Dylann Roof , convicted of the 2015 racist slayings of nine Black members of Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina; the 2013 Boston Marathon Bomber, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev ; and Robert Bowers, who fatally shot 11 congregants at Pittsburgh’s Tree of life Synagogue in 2018 , the deadliest antisemitic attack in U.S history. Opponents of the death penalty lauded Biden for a decision they'd long sought. Supporters of Donald Trump , a vocal advocate of expanding capital punishment, criticized the move as an assault to common decency just weeks before the president-elect takes office. The court documents also mention issues with the lack of "proper lactation breaks" on set, as well as repeated incidents in which her privacy was invaded while breastfeeding, which led to the actress suffering from emotional and physical distress. According to the lawsuit, Blake, who played Lily Bloom in the movie, often went up to six hours without lactation breaks. Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday signed a law that allows those who sign up to fight in Ukraine to write off unpaid debts worth almost $100,000, the government announced. The new legislation will be a strong motivation for some to join up, experts said, as Russia seeks new ways to recruit fighters for the nearly three-year conflict grinding through troops. The new legislation will allow those who sign a one-year contract to fight in Ukraine after December 1 to free themselves of existing bad debts. It also covers their spouses. The law concerns debts where a court order for collection was issued and enforcement proceedings began before December 1, 2024. The total amount of unpaid debt that can be covered is 10 million rubles, around $96,000 at current rates. Parliament approved the bill earlier this month. The legislation will largely concern younger Russians of fighting age, since those in their 30s and younger are most likely to have loans. Russia has extremely high interest rates for loans and many Russians have almost no cash savings, although the proportion of home owners is relatively high. "Previously (for those fighting) there was only provision for taking repayment holidays on loans," Sergei Krivenko of advocacy group Citizen Army Law told Vazhniye Istorii Telegram channel. The new legislation applies to those who are conscripted for national service and those mobilised for the so-called "special military operation", Krivenko said. Conscripts cannot be sent to the front line but can choose to sign a contract to join the professional army and be sent to fight in Ukraine. Russian authorities "are strengthening the motivation to sign a contract," political analyst Georgy Bovt wrote on Telegram. The legislation provides "another way to get rid of an unbearable burden of credit, at least for several hundred thousand people," Bovt wrote. Over 13 million Russians have three or more loans, according to a central bank report released last month covering the first two quarters. This was up 20 percent on the same period last year. The average amount owed by those with three or more loans is 1.4 million rubles ($13,400 at current rates). Jimmy Carter, the earnest Georgia peanut farmer who as US president struggled with a bad economy and the Iran hostage crisis but brokered peace between Israel and Egypt and later received the Nobel Peace Prize for his humanitarian work, died at his home in Plains, Georgia, on Sunday, the Carter Center said. He was 100. “My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love,” said Chip Carter, the former president’s son. “My brothers, sister, and I shared him with the rest of the world through these common beliefs. The world is our family because of the way he brought people together, and we thank you for honoring his memory by continuing to live these shared beliefs.” A Democrat, he served as president from January 1977 to January 1981 after defeating incumbent Republican President Gerald Ford in the 1976 US election. Carter was swept from office four years later in an electoral landslide as voters embraced Republican challenger Ronald Reagan, the former actor and California governor. Carter lived longer after his term in office than any other US president. Along the way, he earned a reputation as a better former president than he was a president — a status he readily acknowledged. His one-term presidency was marked by the highs of the 1978 Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt, bringing some stability to the Middle East. But it was dogged by an economy in recession, persistent unpopularity and the embarrassment of the Iran hostage crisis that consumed his final 444 days in office. In recent years, Carter had experienced several health issues including melanoma that spread to his liver and brain. Carter decided to receive hospice care in February 2023 instead of undergoing additional medical intervention. His wife, Rosalynn Carter, died on November 19, 2023, at age 96. He looked frail when he attended her memorial service and funeral in a wheelchair. Carter left office profoundly unpopular but worked energetically for decades on humanitarian causes. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 in recognition of his "untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development." Carter had been a centrist as governor of Georgia with populist tendencies when he moved into the White House as the 39th US president. He was a Washington outsider at a time when America was still reeling from the Watergate scandal that led Republican Richard Nixon to resign as president in 1974 and elevated Ford from vice president. "I'm Jimmy Carter and I'm running for president. I will never lie to you," Carter promised with an ear-to-ear smile. Asked to assess his presidency, Carter said in a 1991 documentary: "The biggest failure we had was a political failure. I never was able to convince the American people that I was a forceful and strong leader." Despite his difficulties in office, Carter had few rivals for accomplishments as a former president. He gained global acclaim as a tireless human rights advocate, a voice for the disenfranchised and a leader in the fight against hunger and poverty, winning the respect that eluded him in the White House. Carter won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his efforts to promote human rights and resolve conflicts around the world, from Ethiopia and Eritrea to Bosnia and Haiti. His Carter Center in Atlanta sent international election-monitoring delegations to polls around the world. A Southern Baptist Sunday school teacher since his teens, Carter brought a strong sense of morality to the presidency, speaking openly about his religious faith. He also sought to take some pomp out of an increasingly imperial presidency — walking, rather than riding in a limousine, in his 1977 inauguration parade. The Middle East was the focus of Carter's foreign policy. The 1979 Egypt-Israel peace treaty, based on the 1978 Camp David Accords, ended a state of war between the two neighbours. Carter brought Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin to the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland for talks. Later, as the accords seemed to be unravelling, Carter saved the day by flying to Cairo and Jerusalem for personal shuttle diplomacy. The treaty provided for Israeli withdrawal from Egypt's Sinai Peninsula and the establishment of diplomatic relations. Begin and Sadat each won a Nobel Peace Prize in 1978. By the 1980 election, the overriding issues were double-digit inflation, interest rates that exceeded 20% and soaring gas prices, as well as the Iran hostage crisis that brought humiliation to America. These issues marred Carter's presidency and undermined his chances of winning a second term. On Nov. 4, 1979, revolutionaries devoted to Iran's Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini stormed the US Embassy in Tehran, seized the Americans present and demanded the return of the ousted shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, who was backed by the United States and was being treated in a US hospital. The American public initially rallied behind Carter. But his support faded in April 1980 when a commando raid failed to rescue the hostages, with eight US soldiers killed in an aircraft accident in the Iranian desert. Carter's final ignominy was that Iran held the 52 hostages until minutes after Reagan took his oath of office on Jan. 20, 1981, to replace Carter, then released the planes carrying them to freedom. In another crisis, Carter protested the former Soviet Union's 1979 invasion of Afghanistan by boycotting the 1980 Olympics in Moscow. He also asked the US Senate to defer consideration of a major nuclear arms accord with Moscow. Unswayed, the Soviets remained in Afghanistan for a decade. Carter won narrow Senate approval in 1978 of a treaty to transfer the Panama Canal to the control of Panama despite critics who argued the waterway was vital to American security. He also completed negotiations on full US ties with China. Carter created two new US Cabinet departments - education and energy. Amid high gas prices, he said America's "energy crisis" was "the moral equivalent of war" and urged the country to embrace conservation. "Ours is the most wasteful nation on earth," he told Americans in 1977. In 1979, Carter delivered what became known as his "malaise" speech to the nation, although he never used that word. "After listening to the American people I have been reminded again that all the legislation in the world can't fix what's wrong with America," he said in his televised address. "The threat is nearly invisible in ordinary ways. It is a crisis of confidence. It is a crisis that strikes at the very heart soul and spirit of our national will. The erosion of our confidence in the future is threatening to destroy the social and the political fabric of America." As president, the strait-laced Carter was embarrassed by the behaviour of his hard-drinking younger brother, Billy Carter, who had boasted: "I got a red neck, white socks, and Blue Ribbon beer." Jimmy Carter withstood a challenge from Massachusetts Senator Edward Kennedy for the 1980 Democratic presidential nomination but was politically diminished heading into his general election battle against a vigorous Republican adversary. Reagan, the conservative who projected an image of strength, kept Carter off balance during their debates before the November 1980 election. Reagan dismissively told Carter, "There you go again," when the Republican challenger felt the president had misrepresented Reagan's views during one debate. Carter lost the 1980 election to Reagan, who won 44 of the 50 states and amassed an Electoral College landslide. James Earl Carter Jr was born on Oct. 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia, one of four children of a farmer and shopkeeper. He graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1946, served in the nuclear submarine program and left to manage the family peanut farming business. He married his wife, Rosalynn, in 1946, a union he called "the most important thing in my life." They had three sons and a daughter. Carter became a millionaire, a Georgia state legislator and Georgia's governor from 1971 to 1975. He mounted an underdog bid for the 1976 Democratic presidential nomination and out-hustled his rivals for the right to face Ford in the general election. With Walter Mondale as his vice presidential running mate, Carter was given a boost by a major Ford gaffe during one of their debates. Ford said that "there is no Soviet domination of Eastern Europe and there never will be under a Ford administration," despite decades of just such domination. Carter edged Ford in the election, even though Ford won more states — 27 to Carter's 23. Not all of Carter's post-presidential work was appreciated. Former President George W. Bush and his father, former President George H.W. Bush, both Republicans, were said to have been displeased by Carter's freelance diplomacy in Iraq and elsewhere. In 2004, Carter called the Iraq war launched in 2003 by the younger Bush one of the most "gross and damaging mistakes our nation ever made." He called George W. Bush's administration "the worst in history" and said Vice President Dick Cheney was "a disaster for our country." In 2019, Carter questioned Republican Donald Trump's legitimacy as president, saying "he was put into office because the Russians interfered on his behalf." Trump responded by calling Carter "a terrible president." Carter also made trips to communist North Korea. A 1994 visit defused a nuclear crisis, as President Kim Il Sung agreed to freeze his nuclear program in exchange for resumed dialogue with the United States. That led to a deal in which North Korea, in return for aid, promised not to restart its nuclear reactor or reprocess the plant's spent fuel. But Carter irked Democratic President Bill Clinton's administration by announcing the deal with North Korea's leader without first checking with Washington. In 2010, Carter won the release of an American sentenced to eight years of hard labour for illegally entering North Korea. Carter wrote more than two dozen books, ranging from a presidential memoir to a children's book and poetry, as well as works about religious faith and diplomacy. "The mere fact that the survivor is below 18 years cannot lead to a conclusion that there was penetrative sexual assault. The survivor, in fact, used the phrase 'physical relations', but there is no clarity as to what she meant by using the said phrase," the court said in the judgement passed on December 23. "Even the use of the words 'samband banaya' is not sufficient to establish an offence under Section 3 of the POCSO Act or under Section 376 IPC. Though consent would not matter if the girl is a minor under the POCSO Act, the phrase 'physical relations' cannot be converted automatically into sexual intercourse let alone sexual assault," it held. The court said the benefit of doubt ought to be in favour of the accused and, therefore, ruled, "The impugned judgement completely lacks any reasoning and also does not reveal or support any rationale for the conviction. Under such circumstances, the judgement is liable to be set aside. The appellant is acquitted." Syria's Islamist rebel leader on Monday began discussions on transferring power, a day after his opposition alliance dramatically unseated president Bashar al-Assad following decades of brutal rule. Following news announced on Monday that U.S. president-elect Donald Trump would impose a 25-per cent tariff on all products coming in to the United States from Canada and Mexico, many are wondering how this could affect B.C. “ Obviously, this will be devastating to workers on both sides of the border, both in the United States and in Canada,” Premier David Eby said on Tuesday. “The impact on families will be profoundly significant.” Eby said Canada is a major customer for the United States but they also depend on goods produced in Canada. “We are one of the top exporters to the United States and certainly they’re our number one customer as well,” he said. “We have more in common with Americans than what separates us. And focusing on that and how we can work together to strengthen and support working families across North America is critically important. We’re going to stand together and we’re going to ensure that we negotiate from a position of strength, that we negotiate hard, and we ensure that any decisions that are made are in the best interests of British Columbians and Canadians.” Eby said there are improvements that can be made in B.C., especially when it comes to the border, including measures such as port police to ensure what comes into the province is not contraband, illicit drugs or precursor chemicals. “But I’ll tell you this,” he said. “We’re going to stand together... as a province. And so this would be very harmful to U.S. business and it would jack up the price of everything, particularly if it includes energy.” Cameron said that Canada would have to take retaliatory measures but it would be a gamble on both sides of the border. But he added that linking trade to border issues is uncommon. “There are just so many ways in which this is just a very bizarre policy threat,” Cameron said. “And it’s exactly what we were trying to avoid. We negotiated and after the first place, the whole point of having a trade agreement, the United States first, the NAFTA and then the more recent U.S., Mexico, Canada Free Trade Agreement, they’re supposed to prevent this sort of thing from happening.” Cameron said the B.C. industries that could be hit the hardest include softwood lumber, energy, electricity, mining, agriculture and fisheries. “So it really would affect everyone,” he added. “And almost for certain, if he were to follow through on this threat, it would drive us into a recession. Less than a month after winning the World Series, the Los Angeles Dodgers are spending big again to add one of baseball's best pitchers to their star-studded roster. Blake Snell and the Dodgers agreed to a $182 million, five-year contract, according to a person with direct knowledge of the negotiations. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday night because the deal is subject to a successful physical. The two-time Cy Young Award winner broke the news personally by posting a photo of himself on social media in a Dodgers uniform — No. 7. Snell gets a $52 million signing bonus, payable on Jan. 20, and annual salaries of $26 million, of which $13 million each year will be deferred. Because Snell is a Washington state resident, the signing bonus will not be subject to California income tax. Snell would join two-way star Shohei Ohtani and fellow Japanese right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto atop Los Angeles' rotation, giving the Dodgers the first megadeal this offseason following Ohtani's $700 million, 10-year contract and Yamamoto's $325 million, 12-year agreement last offseason. Miller, an 11-game winner as a rookie in 2023, was sidelined early this season by shoulder inflammation. He struggled to a 2-4 record with an 8.52 ERA in 13 big league starts and ended the regular season in the minors.
