Yerevan Forum Focuses On Bolstering Genocide Prevention MechanismsMOSCA, Colorado — A handmade sign at the start of a long dirt road in the rural San Luis Valley indicates to visitors that they’ve arrived at the future site of Kosmos Stargazing Resort & Spa . The peaks of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains barely make a dent in the big blue skies above the 40 acres purchased by founder and CEO Gamal Jadue Zalaquett. He aims to transform the land into a resort featuring 20 villas, a spa, a restaurant and a planetarium. “It’s a place of alignment. Kosmos is a place of connection,” Jadue Zalaquett said. “Kosmos, in a way, is a place to heal, and the San Luis Valley has a lot to do with healing.” He bought the property for $11,000 in December 2020. But with glass domes for stargazing and expensive price tags to stay the night, Jadue Zalaquett’s ambitious brainchild falls snugly into the category of “luxury ecotourism.” His site is an ideal spot for admiring constellations and distant galaxies. According to the National Park Service, the nearby Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is considered an International Dark Sky Park. Jadue Zalaquett said the area is a class two location on the Bortle dark-sky scale, which translates to “ truly dark ” skies. The resort’s planetarium will include a 1-meter telescope. In terms of getting visitors to Kosmos, “that’s gonna be the biggest attractor,” Jadue Zalaquett said. Development is still in the early stages, but it’s already garnering attention from the public: More than 12,000 Instagram users follow the resort’s page where project renderings and updates are shared. Kosmos plans to open its first villa early next year, said marketing operations manager Jennifer Geerlings. Although it’s still under construction, the resort has already booked more than 2,000 reservations, she added. “A lot of it, for some people, is the excitement of being the first to be able to stay in an experience like this,” Geerlings said in a phone interview. “There’s really no other resort that’s doing this.” While Jadue Zalaquett put about $500,000 toward getting the project off the ground, a crowdfunding campaign raised $1.9 million, Geerlings said. Donors paid a one-time fee to receive 50% discounts off their reservations for early 2025. So instead of paying the usual $700 nightly rate, they booked at $350 per night, Geerlings said. And after the campaign’s end, people continued to contribute directly via Stripe, which put total revenue from crowdfunding at more than $2 million, Jadue Zalaquett added. So why is it worth it to stay at Kosmos? For Geerlings, the answer is a combination of the villas — with their jacuzzis nestled in glass domes under the stars — and amenities like the planetarium. “You’re able to experience some of the best stargazing. The Milky Way is visible to the naked eye,” Geerlings said. “A planetarium is something that’s never been at a resort before.” In November, director of field operations Auston Duncan stepped over sagebrush and loose hardware to outline the state of construction on the project. An unfinished villa offered a hint of what’s to come. The rectangular building with exposed wooden rafters and newly-installed glass sliding doors will soon house a bedroom and a bathroom. Jeremy Stephen, the founder of Steamboat Springs-based Evolve Construction , built the villa out of hempcrete , which is made of hemp, water and lime. It works as an eco-friendly insulator, helping to mitigate heating and cooling costs and lending itself to the vision of Kosmos as a resort with sustainability in mind. On one side of the villa, a hot tub will be installed. On the other, a dome made out of glass and wood from Ekodome will cover the kitchen and loft area. The development will occur in phases. Next year, 16 stargazing villas (which hold up to four guests) and 4 galaxy villas (which hold up to eight guests) will be constructed, Geerlings said. Every stay includes an hour of a guided stargazing experience and telescope training. In 2026, the amenities will be built out. Those include the Mediterranean-style restaurant and the wellness center with spa features like hyperbaric chambers, a sauna and a cold plunge. In 2027, the planetarium will be added to the resort. To ensure dark skies, guests will park their cars and use electric golf carts to navigate the resort, Jadue Zalaquett said. He mentioned that discussions with consultants on the stargazing center included a NASA representative, who was interested in hosting a mission workshop at Kosmos next year. Both the planetarium and the spa will be open to the public, Geerlings added. All in all, it’s a bold plan. And Kosmos is looking to hire to make it happen. Right now, the business is in search of employees to lead their stargazing experiences. So far, it’s recruited a former Great Sand Dunes ranger, Geerlings said. The team is considering college students from Adams State University in Alamosa as interns. Kosmos will also need to staff resort operations, including housekeeping, security and front desk workers. “We’re gonna try and hire pretty much everyone locally,” Geerlings said. For Jadue Zalaquett, taking on an endeavor like this runs in his blood. He currently lives between Alamosa and Boulder, but Jadue Zalaquett was born in Chile and grew up in Miami. When his family migrated to Chile, they ran hotels. Several paternal relatives work as architects. However, Jadue Zalaquett didn’t initially follow the family business. Instead, he worked in technology startups for almost a decade. Then, during the COVID-19 pandemic, he visited the San Luis Valley. He realized that, although the Great Sand Dunes were located less than a half hour away, tourists could only choose from a few lodging options. So came the idea for Kosmos. And “here I am, back at my roots,” Jadue Zalaquett said.As her students finished their online exam, Arlet Lara got up to make a cafe con leche. Her 16-year-old son found her on the kitchen floor. First, he called Dad in a panic. Then 911. "I had a stroke, and my life made a 180-degree turn," Lara said, recalling the medical scare she experienced in May 2020 in the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic. "The stroke affected my left side of the body." Lara, an avid runner and gym-goer couldn't even walk. "It was hard," said the 50-year-old mom from North Miami and former high school math teacher. After years of rehabilitation therapy and a foot surgery, Lara can walk again. But she still struggles with moving. This summer, she became the first patient in South Florida to get an implant of a new and only FDA-approved-nerve stimulation device designed to help ischemic stroke survivors regain movement in their arms and hands. People are also reading... Every year, thousands in the United States have a stroke, with one occurring every 40 seconds, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The majority of strokes are ischemic, often caused by blood clots that obstruct blood flow to the brain. For survivors, most of whom are left with some level of disability, the Vivistim Paired VNS System — the device implanted in Lara's chest — could be a game changer in recovery, said Dr. Robert Starke, a neurosurgeon and interventional neuroradiologist. He also serves as co-director of endovascular neurosurgery at Jackson Memorial Hospital, where Lara underwent the procedure. How the device works The Vivistim Paired VNS System is a small pacemaker-like device implanted in the upper chest and neck area. Patients can go home the same day. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the stroke rehabilitation system in 2021 to be used alongside post-ischemic stroke rehabilitation therapy to treat moderate to severe mobility issues in hands and arms. Lara's occupational therapist can activate the device during rehabilitation sessions to electrically stimulate the vagus nerve, which runs from the brain down to the abdomen and regulates various parts of the body's nervous system. The electrical stimulation rewires the brain to improve a stroke survivor's ability to move their arms and hands. Lara also has a magnet she can use to activate the device when she wants to practice at home. Her therapy consists of repetitive tasks, including coloring, pinching cubes and grabbing and releasing cylindrical shapes. After several weeks of rehabilitation therapy with the device, Lara has seen improvement. "Little by little, I'm noticing that my hand is getting stronger," Lara said in September. "I am already able to brush my teeth with the left hand." Since then, Lara has finished the initial six-week Vivistim therapy program and is continuing to use the device in her rehabilitation therapy. She continues to improve and can now eat better with her left hand and can brush her hair with less difficulty, according to her occupational therapist, Neil Batungbakal. Going beyond the 'plateau' Starke sees the device as an opportunity to help bring survivors one step closer to regaining full mobility. Strokes are a leading cause of disability worldwide. While most stroke survivors usually can recover some function through treatment and rehabilitation, they tend to hit a "major plateau" after the first six months of recovery, he said. Vivistim, when paired with rehabilitation therapy, could change that. Jackson Health said results of a clinical trial published in the peer-reviewed medical journal The Lancet in 2021 showed that the device, "when paired with high-repetition, task-specific occupational or physical therapy, helps generate two to three times more hand and arm function for stroke survivors than rehabilitation therapy alone." The device has even shown to benefit patients 20 years after their original stroke, according to Starke. "So now a lot of these patients that had strokes 10 to 15 years ago that thought that they would never be able to use their arm in any sort of real functional way are now able to have a real meaningful function, which is pretty tremendous," Starke said. More about the device Vivistim's vagus-nerve stimulation technology was developed by researchers at the University of Texas at Dallas' Texas Biomedical Device Center and is being sold commercially by Austin-based MicroTransponder, a company started by university graduates. Similar devices are used to treat epilepsy and depression. For Lara, the device is a new tool to help her recovery journey. "Everything becomes a challenge, so we are working with small things every day because I want to get back as many functions as possible," Lara said. Patients interested in Vivistim should speak with their doctor to check their eligibility. The FDA said patients should make sure to discuss any prior medical history. "Adverse events included but were not limited to dysphonia (difficulty speaking), bruising, falling, general hoarseness, general pain, hoarseness after surgery, low mood, muscle pain, fracture, headache, rash, dizziness, throat irritation, urinary tract infection and fatigue," the FDA said. MicroTransponder says the device is "covered by Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance with prior authorization on a case-by-case basis." Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (Image: EPA/Abir Sultan) ICC ARREST WARRANTS The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu , his former defence minister Yoav Gallant and senior Hamas official Mohammed Deif . Judges at the ICC issued the warrants on Thursday for alleged crimes against humanity and war crimes committed during Israel’s war in Gaza, the ABC reports. The BBC flags both Israel and Hamas have rejected the allegations. Israel has also claimed it killed Deif in an airstrike in July, though Hamas has neither confirmed nor denied this, Reuters says. Responding to the warrants, the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office said Israel “utterly rejects the false and absurd charges of the International Criminal Court”, the BBC reports. “Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will not give in to pressure. He will continue to pursue all the objectives that Israel set out to achieve in its just war against Hamas and the Iranian axis of terror,” the office added. The broadcaster quotes Gallant as saying: “The decision sets a dangerous precedent against the right to self-defence and moral warfare and encourages murderous terrorism.” Reuters reports Hamas’ official statement declared: “We call on the International Criminal Court to expand the scope of accountability to all criminal occupation leaders.” The BBC highlights the impact of the warrants issued would depend on whether the ICC’s members, which do not include Israel or the US, decide to enforce them. The Guardian flags that the US has said it “fundamentally rejects” the ICC decision. A US National Security Council spokesperson is quoted as saying: “We remain deeply concerned by the prosecutor’s rush to seek arrest warrants and the troubling process errors that led to this decision. The United States has been clear that the ICC does not have jurisdiction over this matter.” However, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell is quoted by euronews as saying: “It is not a political decision, it is a decision of a court, of a court of justice, an international court of justice. And the decision of the court has to be respected and implemented.” Elsewhere in world news, Russian President Vladimir Putin has said Moscow fired an intermediate-range ballistic missile at Ukraine on Thursday in response to the use of US and British weaponry by Kyiv earlier this week. The BBC quotes Putin as saying: “In combat conditions, a test was carried out of one of the latest Russian intermediate-range missile systems. In this case, with a non-nuclear hypersonic version of a ballistic missile,” adding the “test was successful. The target was reached.” Yesterday Reuters cited sources claiming Putin was open to discussing a Ukraine ceasefire deal with incoming US president Donald Trump but with an insistence Kyiv gives up on plans to join NATO and ruling out Moscow making any major territorial concessions. In the last few hours, Trump has suffered a setback domestically, with his attorney-general pick, Matt Gaetz , withdrawing his name from consideration. Writing on X Gaetz said: “I had excellent meetings with senators yesterday. I appreciate their thoughtful feedback — and the incredible support of so many. While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance transition. “There is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle, thus I’ll be withdrawing my name from consideration to serve as attorney-general. Trump’s DOJ must be in place and ready on day one. I remain fully committed to see that Donald J. Trump is the most successful president in history. I will forever be honoured that president Trump nominated me to lead the Department of Justice and I’m certain he will save America.” DEPORTATION RISK Guardian Australia and AAP are giving considerable coverage this morning to claims more than 80,000 people could be potentially removed to third countries by the Albanese government’s migration bill. The newswire says the proposed amendments to the Migration Act would seek to deport non-citizens and pay third countries for their part in the removals. The bill has passed the House of Representatives and was yesterday subject to a Senate inquiry. Guardian Australia reports government officials have said most of those involved could return to their home country and thousands do so voluntarily. AAP flags the government has not detailed which countries it has been in discussion with. Associate legal director of the Human Rights Law Centre Josephine Langbien told the Senate inquiry: “We don’t know which countries will be included. We don’t know how those countries will treat people who are sent there. They could be detained arbitrarily, denied medical treatment, violently attacked or killed, or sent back to their country of origin.” Meanwhile, the AAP flags that thousands of people are expected to march in Melbourne later today demanding an end to gender-based violence. The newswire said “vast” crowds are expected in what is the start of 16 days of activism. Respect Victoria chairperson Kate Fitz-Gibbon said the two weeks represented “great opportunities for all Victorians to get involved in shifting the narrative”. Respect Victoria said on its website this morning’s event “marks the beginning of the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence — a global campaign for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls. By joining the walk you can take action to prevent family violence and violence against women and stand in solidarity with victim survivors.” The march is set to begin at 11am at Birrarung Marr. The AAP also reports climate activists will stage a protest against fossil fuels at the world’s biggest coal export port, Newcastle Harbour, later “with a flotilla, live music and other events revolving around protest and climate”. The newswire said the protest comes after organisers Rising Tide launched a successful last-minute legal challenge to overturn a “marine exclusion zone” planned by the NSW government that would have stopped protesters from being able to enter the water. Finally, as we get to the end of what might be the penultimate sitting week of this parliamentary term, the Nine newspapers are amping up the speculation swirling in Canberra that we may get an election in March next year. The Sydney Morning Heralds says Labor will move to a “campaign war footing” before Christmas with the party’s national campaign office reportedly being set up near Surry Hills in Sydney next month. The Liberal and National parties have leased a campaign office in Parramatta, the paper adds. ON A LIGHTER NOTE... Pamela Hayden , the actor who voices numerous characters on The Simpsons including everyone’s favourite Milhouse, is retiring from the show after 35 years, The Guardian reports. Hayden, who also voices Ned Flanders’ children Rod and Todd, Lisa’s friend Janey Powell, school bully Jimbo Jones and Chief Wiggum’s wife Sarah, said in a statement: “The time has come for me to hang up my microphone.” In a video on Instagram , the 70-year-old said of all her characters, Milhouse was her “main guy”. “People are always saying what a nerd he is, but one thing that I love about Milhouse is he’s always getting knocked down, but he keeps getting up. I love the little guy. It’s this wonderful analogy for life.” As a wise boy once said, everything’s coming up Milhouse. Say What? I stand here, neither defeated or disposed, lucky to have served, fortunate to be able to say goodbye. Bill Shorten Someone else who is retiring (from politics) is former Labor leader Bill Shorten who delivered his valedictory speech on Thursday. The Sydney Morning Herald said hundreds of people stood, applauded and cheered Shorten following his speech in the House of Representatives. Shorten is off to be the vice-chancellor of the University of Canberra from February. CRIKEY RECAP Emails reveal how Labor engineered event to support its own teen social media ban CAM WILSON South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas (Image: AAP/Bianca De Marchi) At a press conference announcing the federal government’s plans to ban Australians under the age of 16 from using social media earlier this month, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese thanked South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas and New South Wales Premier Chris Minns . The pair had been responsible for organising a jointly-held social media summit, Albanese said, which was “most instructive” as part of the government’s consultation in coming up with the ban. But far from being a frank discussion of the ban’s benefits and drawbacks or a wide canvassing of possible ways to address concerns about social media, internal emails from Malinauskas’ office and interviews with attendees suggest the event was carefully stage-managed with the explicit purpose of creating “momentum” for the social media ban. Simon Holmes à Court on Climate 200, donation reforms and why Kerry Stokes wields more power than he does RACHEL WITHERS Simon Holmes à Court is not a billionaire — “not even close,” he tells me. The Climate 200 founder is often described as the son of Australia’s first billionaire, with Peter Dutton and David Littleproud recently suggesting he is one too . Labor’s electoral reforms, which the Coalition is currently helping rush through, are pitched as getting “big money” out of politics, using him and mining magnate Clive Palmer as examples of said money. But Holmes à Court is adamant he and Palmer are “not in the same league”. The Melbourne-based businessman, who isn’t on rich lists , donated $250,000 at the 2022 election — less than 2% of what Climate 200 raised, paling in comparison to Palmer’s $120 million. He’s not “crying poor”, he says. But he’s clearly exasperated at the way he continues to be portrayed. “ The Australian has pumped me up as a billionaire Palmer-like figure,” he says. “There’s the Karl Rove playbook thing of ‘accuse your opponent of your biggest flaw’, right? Dutton’s taking Gina’s private jet around the country ... Labor has taken millions from Pratt ... But it suits them to paint me as being ‘big money’.” Mass arrests, home raids, excess force: Police treatment of Land Forces protesters could lead to class action CRYSTAL ANDREWS On October 24, five police officers turned up on Jasmine Duff’s doorstep. Despite not having a warrant, Duff claims they insisted on coming into the house to look for her. “They walked into my room as I was climbing out of bed and placed me under arrest,” Duff tells Crikey . “One officer stayed in the room while I stripped down to get dressed, telling my housemate ‘It’s so she doesn’t jump out the window’.” Duff says she was taken to a police station, shown photographs of herself at the anti-war protest outside the Land Forces Defence Expo at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre in September, and charged with affray. The expo is an international showcase for weapons and military technology manufacturers, described by anti-war demonstrators as a “one-stop genocide shop” that should not be hosted in Australia or supported by government funding (the Victorian government was a “principal sponsor” of this year’s event). Duff is one of the many Disrupt Land Forces protesters attending hearings today at the Melbourne Magistrates Court. Victoria police have confirmed that 110 people have been arrested for their participation in the protest. While 89 arrests were made on the spot at the demonstrations from September 11 to 13, a further 21 people have since been arrested. Many of these individuals were arrested at their homes in a series of “raids” beginning in late October, like that experienced by Duff. Letting fly over PM’s travels is plain silly — David Crowe ( The Sydney Morning Herald ): So the complaint that the prime minister travels too much — the “Airbus Albo” line in parts of the media — is puerile. That did not stop The Daily Telegraph from using its front page on Wednesday to smash Albanese for being away. What was revealing, however, was that newspaper had to resort to using the Institute of Public Affairs, a conservative group loyal to the Liberals, to offer a quote saying there was a problem. And this was after the critics wanted Albanese to fly to Israel, Indonesia and a NATO summit at various points this year. Some even suggested he should fly to Mar-a-Lago to see Trump. The hypocrisy is rampant. The government’s mistake was planning two weeks of Parliament at the same time as the G20 when it knew Albanese would have to be away. It could have moved the sittings one week later so Parliament ended in the first week of December rather than November 28. In the end, the prime minister’s absence for three sitting days did not slow the government or the Parliament. While there were some conservative conniptions when Albanese met with Xi, there was no sacrifice of Australian sovereignty in talking to the Chinese president. Albanese listened to Xi across the table and then put Australia’s position on fair trade and the need to maintain the status quo on Taiwan. He also expressed concern at the treatment of Australian writer Yang Hengjun , who is in prison in China after receiving a suspended death sentence. So the prime minister made effective use of the summits. Yes, the plenary sessions were padded with platitudes. All the real work was in the face-to-face talks. Albanese weighed down abroad by parlous state of world — Phillip Coorey ( AFR ): Equally weighing on Albanese’s mind while abroad was the increasingly parlous state of the world, exacerbated by the second coming of Trump. This government has an unfortunate, avoidable and inexplicable habit of scheduling parliamentary sitting weeks to clash with the prime minister’s commitments abroad. This only amplifies his absence, especially when Parliament is blowing up as it did this week over foreign student caps, and gives Albanese’s detractors ammunition to claim he’s not tuned in to domestic concerns, Which, of course, is untrue. Every press conference over the past seven days began with the domestic political spinoffs of the policy positions Australia was putting at the summits or at the bilateral meetings being held — be it job creation, generating growth or lowering inflation.
( ) is down about 12% in 2024. Contrarian investors focused on dividends are wondering if Telus stock is now and good to buy for a self-directed Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) or Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) focused on income and total returns. Telus stock price Telus trades near $21 per share at the time of writing. The stock is above the 12-month low of around $20 but is way off the $34 it reached in 2022 before the Bank of Canada began to aggressively raise interest rates. Higher interest rates drove up borrowing expenses over the past two years. Communications companies like Telus spend billions of dollars expanding and upgrading their wireless and wireline networks and using debt to fund part of the capital program. Higher interest expenses reduce profits and can cut into cash that is available for distributions or debt reduction. Telus has also faced challenges in both its ( ) subsidiary and the core Canadian business. Telus Digital provides multi-lingual call centre and IT services to global companies. A sharp drop in revenue at Telus Digital forced Telus to reduce guidance last year and contributed to the reduction of 6,000 positions across the broader business. TIXT is down more than 50% on the TSX in 2024. In the domestic market, Telus is dealing with price wars and regulatory uncertainty. In addition, the reduction in immigration and foreign student numbers in the next few years will likely slow the growth of new mobile and internet accounts. Opportunity? Battles to win customers could continue into next year, but the communications companies will eventually refocus on boosting margins. Telus is holding its own in the current environment. The company reported 130,000 net mobile customer additions in the third quarter (Q3) of 2024. Results at Telus Digital stabilized in the quarter compared to Q2 2024, so the worst might be over for that division. Telus Health, another subsidiary, continues to grow and could become a meaningful contributor to overall growth in the coming years. Telus is also monetizing its real estate portfolio to unlock value and capital. Dividend Telus has increased its dividends annually for more than 20 years. The board raised the distribution by a total of 7% in 2024. This suggests the management team is comfortable with the earnings outlook over the medium term, even in the current challenging market conditions. Investors who buy Telus stock at the current share price can get a dividend yield of 7.7%. Risks Inflation started to creep up again in the past couple of months. This could force the Bank of Canada to slow down its pace of rate cuts, even if the economy softens. Bond yields remain elevated, so borrowing money is still expensive for corporations that need to refinance debt. In Canada, unemployment jumped to 6.8% in November. If the economy slips into a recession and job losses rise, people will be less likely to upgrade to new phones or add new services to their communications plans. This could put added pressure on Telus and its peers in the next year. Is Telus a buy? Additional weakness is possible in the near term. In fact, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Telus retest the 12-month low if the broader market goes into a correction. That being said, most of the negative outlook should already be priced into the stock. Contrarian investors searching for high-yield dividends might consider a small position at this level and look to add on additional weakness. The dividend should be safe, so you get paid well to wait for a recovery.

We have four in our house, one for the dishes (which I cannot believe how well it works on dried/crusty food caked on cooking items), one for my husband's beer brewing supplies, and each for the bathrooms to clean the tubs because it is the easiest way to clean them! And it doesn't scratch anything as it gets soft when it's wet, while retaining its strong cleaning capabilities. The Scrub Daddy works like magic and I would recommend it to anyone ...Everyone should have at least one in their home for dirty dishes! You'll never need to let something soak overnight again, just use the Scrub Daddy!" — KDro Get a three-pack from Amazon for $13.99 (available in two styles). 8. It has gotten out red wine, coffee, raspberry stain on white carpet, old urine stains that were found WAY after the fact, and the list goes on and on. I use it in a spray bottle as a pretreatment before shampooing, and most often, the stain is completely gone before I even shampoo it. When I say 'gone'...I mean, GONE! And that’s with no scrubbing. It disappears like magic! To say that I’d buy it again is such an understatement. I can’t be without it!!" — Angela Raab Get it from Amazon for $18.99+ (available in three sizes and five scents). 9. My. Word. These are life-changing. I used a Rubbermaid spray mop for years that I never really loved, and when it broke, I got a Swiffer and was using the old Rubbermaid mop cloth pads with it still. They didn't fit the Swiffer great and I decided to get new ones. These scrub so much better and pick up way more dirt than my other mop pad. I have two dogs and their dried water and drool is around the kitchen and I used to have to scrub to get that up each time. Not with these pads! I never thought I'd swoon over a cleaning product but...here we are :). " — JB Get a pack of two from Amazon for $14 (available in multi-packs). 11. The best part is that there's no hard work on your end. Just spray, wait 15 seconds, and watch the mold disappear! Promising review: "I bought this RMR spray with low expectations, even with the good reviews. I sprayed a small patch in the evening and let it sit overnight. The next morning, the grout where I had sprayed was as white as if it were brand new. I decided to spray the entire wall and part of the roof. The next day everything I sprayed had no visible mold. By the third night, I was pretty much spraying everything left in the shower. This stuff is amazing." — John Werner Get a 32-oz bottle on Amazon for $16.99+ (available in three sizes). 12. Viren Apothecary is a woman-owned business based in Wisconsin that sells eco-friendly cleaning essentials. Promising reviews: "Literally can’t tell you how worth the wait these toilet bombs are! They smell absolutely incredible but not artificial, and they WORK. I have a new baby and two other kids, and my house is basically a biohazard because I’m short on time and energy. I just plop one of these puppies into the toilet, come back shortly and scrub, and they glisten. Even my husband, who has never voluntarily cleaned anything in his life, will clean toilets because the fizzers are fun. I was part of the BuzzFeed order rush, and so there were significant delays, but the communication was awesome and so friendly! Even though I had the long wait, it was absolutely worth it, and they have a customer for life. I’m so excited to try their other products!!" — Teresa Cambria Get it from Viren Apothecary on Etsy for $10+ (available in eucalyptus or unscented). 13. A professional-strength grout cleaner so you can remove years and years worth of gross grime from your floors, countertops, and even shower tile. Did you forget that white grout existed in your home? Trust me, it's still there. Promising review: "I did a lot of research on grout cleaners. I recently purchased a home, and the grout is SO dirty. You wouldn’t even know it was white. I was between this product and another with similar ratings. I decided to go with this product and do not regret it at all. You definitely need gloves, a well-ventilated area, and a stiff scrub brush. It doesn’t require a lot of scrubbing if you have a good brush. Leaving it on the longer end of 5–10 minutes is better. I’m SO impressed. " — Lynn Santos Get it from Amazon for $21.95 (also available with a grout brush). 15. OR a grout pen that's a tad less work, but will still have your home's surfaces looking brand spankin' new. I did the entire floor of my large master bathroom plus a little of the shower with one pen. It is pretty forgiving and you have quite a bit of working time before it dries completely. This was not a quick task, but it went faster than I thought it would. I was worried the white would look too bright, but it just makes everything look so much cleaner. I'm very happy with this product!" — Jenelle Get it from Amazon for $8.99+ (available in two sizes). 16. An Angry Mama microwave cleaner because it'll make it waaay easier to clean your microwave (so no more excuses!). Simply add in water and vinegar, then put it in the microwave for five to eight minutes. When it's done, just wipe clean! Promising review: "I would give this product more stars if I could. I am a busy mom and my microwave often gets pushed to the end of my never ending to do list. So much so that I would have been too embarrassed to show anyone how gross it had gotten. I finally ordered this with the hope that it would at least help make the job a little bit easier. I was AMAZED! Seriously, the hardest part of the entire experience was trying to get the little mama’s head off to fill it and that only took a minute to figure out. I followed the directions carefully and then used a sponge to wipe off the grease and food bits. My microwave looks brand-new. I will probably use a microfiber cloth next time though because the sponge pushed the mess around and wasn’t needed to scrub at all... If you dread cleaning your microwave order this, I’m telling you it really does work wonders! " — MJ Get it from Amazon for $10.98 (available in four colors). 17. A shower door cleaner sure to rid those hard water stains and get your glass doors back to their original clean and clear state. Remember when you could see out the shower door? I have to admit the first time I used it with a cloth it was not very effective. The second time I used a nonabrasive sponge for glass , it turned out beautiful just like the first day the glass was installed." — EJP Get it from Amazon for $11.65 . 18. Promising review: " I bought this squeegee to replace our old plastic one that was old and warped. I love that this one is much wider than our previous squeegee so it takes less time to clean our glass-enclosed shower. It also has a really nice weight to it. It feels sturdy in your hand and the weight helps to pull it down to the bottom of the glass wall/door. The hanger feels secure and I love having it out of the way (our previous one sat on the shower bench). Happy so far." — shellyrae1 Get it from Amazon for $9.99+ (available in three sizes and four colors). 19. It comes with everything you need including the cleaning solution, a cleaning pad, and a scraper tool. Promising review: "Works amazing! I hadn't thoroughly scrubbed my glass cooktop in years... Only wiped down with random multi cleaners which never seemed to do much. Then a friend recommended this product... AMAZING! The included scrubbers and scrapers really make the difference. As others have said it will leave your cooktop shiny and new... Even marks that had been on there for years came almost completely off... 98% better. The key is to use very little product... Let dry to a haze and wipe with a clean dry cotton towel. (Just like waxing a car). If you aren't getting a mirrored finish it's because you've used too much product and not enough elbow grease to polish off." — B. Swartwood Get a pack of four from Amazon for $11.48 . 21. A wood polish and conditioner that'll restore your furniture, kitchen cabinets, or the cool vintage coffee table you found at a flea market. It's like getting all new things without the expensive price tag. Promising review: "I literally never leave Amazon reviews but felt like I had to spread the word about this product. The previous owners of our house had dogs who scratched the doors into oblivion (as you can see from the before photo [on the right]). I honestly thought we either had to live with it or buy new doors until I found this product. Unless the scratch is REALLY deep, this stuff blended it right out and you can’t even see the scratches anymore. Super easy to use, and smells like oranges. 10/10 would recommend and will use for the rest of my life! " — Sarah Cassidy Get it from Amazon for $9.99+ (available in three sizes). 22. Every time I ran the dishwasher there was this horrible smell. So much that you could smell it throughout the apartment . I even started just hand-washing my dishes. But after about a week, the smell came back. I bought so many products to try and eliminate the smell, but after a couple of days, it would come back. Then I saw this product on BuzzFeed and thought to myself, why not? The first time I used it cleaned it out pretty well. Better than the other products. But then I used it a second time, and there was no smell. I'm going on two weeks of using my dishwasher, and I can't smell anything. I highly recommend this if you're having the same problem I was. This is by far the best kitchen cleaning product I've ever purchased. " — khrystyne torres Get a two-pack from Amazon for $7.56+ (available in multipacks). 23. I love having a safe cleaning product that actually works and cuts down on the daily chemicals we are all exposed to. Love the smell of the grapefruit!...No smudging on windows and that sealed the deal for me. I've got a large front window and two toddlers that like to leave dirty hand marks and nose imprints on it. Promising reviews: "Maybe it’s just because I’ve never used a 'premium' vacuum before but this thing is incredible. The roller head with the light makes the dog hair/sand on my light-colored floors so easy to spot and honestly makes it so satisfying to see it disappear. I used to hate walking around barefoot in my house... Once over with the Dyson and my floors are spotless. Oh and on top of that, it’s so quiet! I thought something was wrong with it at first because it doesn’t sound like a normal vacuum, my dog isn’t even afraid of it which is saying something. I can also tell that the HEPA filter is going to do a wonderful job just from the first use. So worth the extra money! " — Aaron Michael Yeip Get it from Amazon for $588 . 25. Vacuuming shouldn't have to be a dreaded chore; now it's quick and easy. I love it so much, that I convinced my mom and dad, who are elderly, to get one as well. They absolutely love it too. They had a couple of big, clunky, and heavy vacuum cleaners with great suction, but they were nearly impossible for my parents to move safely. I’m SO glad that I encouraged them to get this and I don't have to worry about them tripping or falling while vacuuming. For them, it is like night and day, really... Promising review: "My neighbors would rate this 0 stars because I'm running this bad boy at all hours. Car wash at 4 a.m.? You bet. Hose out the garage and all down the driveway? Consider it done. There's no longer any paint on my house; the layers of dirt from when dinosaurs walked the Earth have been removed from every crack of concrete , and the stubborn moss that engulfed my front steps has been screaming, 'No more, Daddy!' for days now. I'm a ruthless power washing machine now. It has become a part of me. I dream about it every night. Now I'm just figuring a way to power-clean my putrid, filthy soul." — b00mfox Get it from Amazon for $199 . 28. An oil stain remover that can change a stained surface in just 72 hours 🤯. All you need to do is stir the cleaner, apply to the stain, and wait! Recommended for use on marble, granite, limestone, travertine, slate, sandstone, grout for ceramic and porcelain tile, masonry, and concrete! Promising review: "I am so happy. This stuff removed a deep oil stain from my marble when nothing else would work . Pure whitest white with gold veined Aspen-Lincoln marble had a huge deep oil/ lotion ring from the bottom of a counter mirror. Made me and my wife sick to our stomachs seeing it on the 3-month-old $7,500 slab in our bathroom. Tried baking powder poultices with dish soap, alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, and acetone — Nothing touched it. Placed this Laticrete product on for about 80 hours and was patient. This solvent penetrates the entire slab. Amazing results! Oil ring was totally gone. Had to be patient following for the solvent to totally evaporate and the marble to lighten up again..... and it did. Can’t recommend this product highly enough!... This one came through when it was really needed👍" — John Lessard Get it from Amazon for $23.80 . 29. A universal cleaning gel great for getting rid of crumbs and dust in the tightest of places. Promising review: "I purchased this product to clean those little spaces in my car filled with random crumbs from my husband and dog hair, and it works amazing. Picked up everything and didn’t leave a residue. The lemon scent was faint and didn’t overpower the vehicle while I was cleaning it. But this definitely got in all the little nooks and crannies." — Kimberly Get it from Amazon for $6.89 (also available in blue ). 30. To wash the mop part of the shoe, simply detach the bottom half and toss it in the washing machine! Promising review: "Such a cute and functional house slipper! I love this so much. It feels a lot like hotel slippers but less flimsy because of the mop part. You will not feel like you’re wearing a mop when wearing these. I have hardwood floors, so I vacuum a lot and rarely mop. These work so well in getting the dirt off the floor just by walking around doing your daily thing. I just throw the whole thing in the wash when it gets dirty!" — passionfrootgreentea Get it from Amazon for $13.99 (available in four sizes and 16 colors). 31. Get a two pack from Amazon for $9.98+ (available in eight wood finishes). 32. A stainless steel polishing spray that comes with a microfiber cloth. It'll make your stainless-steel appliances look as good as new! Promising review: "In my experience, cleaning products usually need to be pretty strong chemicals that require care when applying. When faced with options, I usually buy the chemical with the most skull and cross bones, warning labels, and danger symbols I can find. I figure the more volatile and poisonous the chemical, the better it will work! So I was skeptical about this product when it was billed as a plant based chemical on the other end of the toxicity spectrum. I decided to try it because of the many positive reviews. I'm glad I did. It works great! I wouldn't use it as a mouthwash, but it certainly isn't as harsh as other cleaners I've used." — Joe Get it from Amazon for $19.95+ (available in two sizes). 33. Because this product is absolutely, unbelievably unreal. I have dogs who pee and poop in the house sometimes, and I use this product to clean their messes. And it is miraculous. No stains, no smell, nothing. It almost works like an eraser. And it works on fabric, wood, rugs, glass. I buy three or four tubs at a time, because I don’t want to run out. This is my go-to for pretty much everything. And they’re really not that expensive. Kudos to the inventors of this!!!" — Jim Get a pack of 90 from Amazon for $14.98 . 34. Promising review: "I have allergic reactions to dog hair and dander, so imagine my surprise when we learned our new quarantine pup wasn’t hypoallergenic as we had thought. Cue a mad dash to buy every product under the sun to keep my allergies in check, because from the moment she came home, we were in love. ... Then, enter the ChomChom roller, the roller to end the need for any other roller. Gone are the days of stripping and sticking with a disposable lint roller. Gone are the days of dragging that red lint brush paddle over the furniture. And definitely gone are the days hauling out the vacuum just to zip away the excess dog fur on the couch. This works so, so well! I am always amazed at what this picks up even after I just ran the vacuum. If you remove the head from the handle you can use the head to do in all the crevices along baseboards where fur gets trapped on the carpets. Nothing would take out the ring along the waterline. But I saw this product in a BuzzFeed roundup and figured it was worth a shot. Tried it this morning and oh. my. goodness. It easily took out the ring and with some harder scrubbing, the rest of the stains/buildup/whatever the term is for the stuff that made the bowl look gross . It looks just about brand new! Definitely worth the purchase." — Courtney Get it from Amazon for $11.98 . 39. Relax, take a deep breath and know that dinner is served. Serves 4. Making grilled cheese for more than one can be tricky. Here, the sheet pan does the work; the sandwiches are ready all at once. Try our suggested fillings or just enjoy them plain in all their gooey deliciousness. From Beth Dooley. Directions Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Line a large sheet pan with parchment paper. Spread the butter to the edge of 4 slices of bread. Place the slices butter-side down on the sheet pan. Top with the sliced cheese and add a layer of the filling, then top with the remaining slices of bread. Put the pan in the oven and cook until the butter is thoroughly melted and bottom slices are turning golden and the cheese is melting, about 8 to 10 to minutes. Flip the sandwiches. Continue cooking until the top layer of bread begins to turn golden and the cheese is melted. Turn the oven to broil and toast the top layer, watching closely, this goes quickly, about 30 seconds to 1 minute. Flip the bread and toast the other side, about 15 to 20 seconds or so. Remove, cut and serve. Quick Skillet Chicken with Lemon, Tahini and Warm Spices will come together quickly and can be served on a bed of greens or pasta. (Ashley Moyna Schwickert/For the Minnesota Star Tribune) Serves 4 to 6. A simple marinade of pantry staples — lemon, tahini, olive oil and a little honey — keeps the chicken moist and becomes the sauce for finishing the dish. Serve on a bed of dark greens or cooked rice. From Beth Dooley. Directions In a large bowl, whisk together the lemon, tahini, honey and olive oil. Measure out 1⁄2 of the mixture into a separate bowl. This is to sauce the chicken after it’s cooked. If it seems too thick, whisk in a little water. Season the chicken with salt and pepper and pound with the flat edge of a knife to even out the width a bit. Put the chicken into the bowl of marinade and turn to coat. Film a heavy skillet with more oil and set over high heat. When the oil begins to ripple, add the chicken, reduce the heat to medium and cook, flipping after about 5 to 7 minutes, and continuing, until cooked through, about 10 to 15 minutes. (The chicken should reach 165 on an instant-read thermometer when done.) Remove the chicken from the skillet, set on a cutting board to rest for about 10 minutes. Slice the meat in long strokes against the grain. Serve on a bed of greens or rice, garnished with a drizzle of sauce, chopped herbs and a few thinly sliced lemons. Pass additional sauce on the side. One-Pot Pasta with Sausage, Tomato and Spinach is a quick but hearty meal for busy, chilly nights. (Ashley Moyna Schwickert/For the Minnesota Star Tribune) Serves 4 to 6. You only need one pot for this simple pasta. The sausage adds the seasoning, the onions turn sweetly golden, cherry tomatoes burst into a luscious sauce. A squeeze of lemon at the end livens things up. From Beth Dooley. Directions Film a large heavy pot or Dutch oven with the oil and set over medium heat. Add the onion and sauté until it turns limp and golden, about 3 to 5 minutes. Stir in the sausage, breaking apart with a spatula until it crumbles, about 4 to 5 minutes. Stir in the tomatoes and the stock, scraping up the bottom of the pan to release browned bits that stick to the bottom. Bring to a boil. Add the pasta, stirring well and continue boiling for about 4 to 5 minutes. Turn the heat down to a brisk simmer, stirring to keep the pasta from sticking to the bottom of the pot. If the sauce becomes too thick and the pasta begins to stick, stir in water, about 1⁄4 cup at a time. Simmer until the sauce is mostly absorbed and the pasta is tender, about 15 minutes. Turn off the heat and stir in the spinach, then stir in the cheese. Add lemon juice to taste. Serve garnished with the chopped parsley. DoorDash will require its drivers to verify their identities more often as part of a larger effort to crack down on unauthorized account sharing. DoorDash has been under pressure to ensure its drivers are operating legally. Over the summer, for example, it pledged to do a better job dangerous drivers after a flood of complaints of dangerous driving from cities. Officials in Boston, New York and other cities have said that in many cases, people with multiple traffic violations continue to make deliveries using accounts registered to others. The said Thursday it was requiring some drivers to complete real-time identity checks immediately after they complete a delivery. Previously, drivers were occasionally asked to re-verify their identities before or after a shift. DoorDash has introduced the new system in Los Angeles, Denver, Seattle and other cities, and said it planned a wider rollout next year. DoorDash said it also has developed an advanced machine learning system that can flag potential unauthorized account access, including login anomalies and suspicious activity. If the company detects a problem, it will require drivers to re-verify their identity before they can . U.S. drivers must verify their identities with a driver’s license or other government-issued identification, and upload a selfie that matches their identification photo before they can do work for DoorDash. They also must submit to background checks, which require a Social Security number. The company said it found that some drivers were getting around the requirements by sharing accounts with authorized users. In some cases, drivers who were not authorized to drive for DoorDash paid authorized users for access to their accounts. Some federal lawmakers have demanded that DoorDash and other delivery apps do a better job of keeping people who are in the U.S. illegally off the platforms. Republican U.S. Sens. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, Mike Braun of Indiana and Ted Budd of North Carolina sent letters to delivery companies in April asking them to crack down on account sharing. “These illegal immigrants are delivering food directly to consumers’ doors without ever having undergone a background check and often without even using their real names,” the letter said. It added that working illegally can also be dangerous for migrants, creating the potential for exploitation and abuse. The Associated Press left messages seeking comment Thursday with Gig Workers Rising and Justice for App Workers, which both represent delivery drivers. DoorDash won’t estimate how many drivers are using shared accounts, but said its safeguards are effective. Last year, it began asking drivers to re-verify their identities monthly by submitting a selfie. The company said it is now asking more than 150,000 drivers to complete selfie checks each week, and it’s removing them from the platform if they don’t comply. The first phase of CPEC provides 200,000 direct jobs and anticipates additional indirect employment ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives, Ahsan Iqbal, announced plans to upgrade the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) into its second phase, focusing on growth, innovation, sustainability, livelihood, and regional connectivity. The sweet interaction between the two dogs, Gamja, 5, and Chip, 3, has gained viral attention on TikTok as the footage reveals the pair's sweet bond. In the video , posted by owner Yuni Lee from California, the older retriever, Gamja, was stirring and making noises as she slept. Chip, sensing something is wrong, gently approaches his older sister, nudging and licking her face in an apparent attempt to comfort her. Alongside the sweet moment, owner Lee wrote a text overlay that said: "Wondering where Chip learned to gently wake his sister when she's having a bad dream." The answer became clear as the video unfolded; Chip's adorable wake-up was learned behavior from Gamja herself. The video transitioned to a shot of Chip as a puppy, being lovingly licked awake by his older sister while he naps, revealing that the compassionate behavior was passed down from one dog to the other. "I see them do it whenever one is dreaming and making sounds ," Lee told Newsweek . "Although it doesn't necessarily mean they're having bad dreams, the sounds do make it seem like it." Lee added: "Watching them gently wake each other is so sweet. Their bond is very special." Whether Gamja was having a "bad dream" or simply a restless night—scientific evidence supports the idea that dogs do, in fact, dream . A 2001 study conducted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology observed the brain activity of lab rats as they navigated a maze. The MIT researchers found that the rats exhibited similar brain patterns during REM [rapid eye movement] sleep, suggesting they were dreaming about their experiences. The researchers said that, since dogs possess more advanced intellectual capabilities than rats, it was reasonable to conclude they also dream. On TikTok, people couldn't get enough of the adorable moment, and viewers flooded to the comments section to share their reactions. "Dogs are so compassionate and intuitive," one commenter wrote, while another posted: "Dogs are better than people." "They are absolutely so sweet and adorable. I can feel the love," added a third viewer. Do you have funny and adorable videos or pictures of your pet you want to share? But APIs are vulnerable to misuse, with advanced threats such as scraping , account takeovers and fraud intensified by generative artificial intelligence , TechNative reported . Platforms face a variety of risks, including data theft, payment manipulation and business logic abuse. To combat these threats, businesses must implement API security strategies that detect and block AI-driven attacks, ensuring the integrity and trust of their platforms as the gig economy continues to grow. Gig Economy Growth and the Rising Need for Fraud Prevention The value of the gig economy is $556.7 billion, and that is expected to more than triple by 2032 to $1.847 trillion. As this sector grows, so does the need for fraud prevention. Prove Identity CEO Rodger Desai proposed using trust networks like those in the financial and telecom industries to combat fraud in the gig economy. A key solution involves phone-based verification systems, which would link identity tokens to users’ phone numbers while preserving anonymity. This system would increase trust by offering flexible verification and data-sharing options. “The challenge is that anyone can join these platforms ... therefore, the bad folks do as well,” Desai told PYMNTS in September. “Networks like Visa and Mastercard have done a great job of creating a circle of trust,” he added. “You and I can jump on a plane and go to Thailand and have lunch somewhere, and that merchant will know they’ll get paid in their currency ... in the same way, you can go anywhere in the world and make a phone call. The question is: ‘How do you apply that to the gig economy?’” AI Scraping Threats and Enhanced Digital Protections Ride-hailing platforms rely on APIs to match drivers with passengers in real time , the TechNative report said. Attackers can use AI to simulate fake customer requests, overwhelming the platform with bot-driven traffic and causing service disruptions Just as Visa and Mastercard create a seamless global transaction experience, companies now need secure systems to protect their digital content from automated extraction. As AI companies increase their web scraping efforts, businesses face growing challenges in protecting their online content. Web infrastructure company Cloudflare introduced a new tool designed to block unauthorized data scraping, potentially disrupting AI training processes that rely on massive amounts of web data. The tool uses advanced machine learning and behavioral analysis to distinguish between legitimate traffic and AI bots, offering a more targeted defense. Companies that generate content want to protect their intellectual property to maintain revenue streams. “When their information is scraped , especially in near real time, it can be summarized and posted by an AI over which they have no control, which in turn deprives the content creator of getting its own clicks — and the attendant revenue,” HP Newquist , executive director of The Relayer Group and author of “The Brain Makers,” told PYMNTS in July. While Cloudflare’s tool shows promise, the battle against web scraping remains complex and ongoing. Experts warn that AI companies may find ways to circumvent these protections, and new countermeasures are already emerging. To protect their digital assets, businesses are adopting multilayered strategies, such as using CAPTCHAs, rate limiting and altering website code. Despite these efforts, the conflict between content protectors and data scrapers is likely to continue, with implications for AI model development and the future of online content. Multilayered Defense Strategies Against Scraping Gig economy platforms need to implement more advanced security strategies, the TechNative report said. Real-time monitoring of API traffic and machine learning-powered behavioral analytics can help identify abnormal patterns that signal malicious activity. Effective strategies also include periodically altering HTML and CSS code to disrupt automated scraping tools, filtering user agents to block known bots, and setting up honeytrap pages to lure and identify malicious scrapers. “By restricting the rate at which requests can be made, you can reduce the impact of scraping bots that attempt to harvest large amounts of data quickly,” Ross Kernez , director of SEO at Mavis Tire , told PYMNTS in July. The growing need for enhanced digital protections extends beyond content scraping. As Desai said, trust and safety solutions are vital in the gig economy, particularly with the rise of AI-generated content and deepfakes. Ensuring the authenticity of users and content is essential to combatting fraud. “Over time, you’re probably only going to trust things that have been signed and verified,” Desai said. ALTOONA, Pa. — The man accused of killing UnitedHealthcare’s CEO struggled with deputies and shouted while being led into court Tuesday as new details emerged about his possible motivation behind the ambush. In his first public words since a five-day search ended with his arrest at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania, Luigi Nicholas Mangione emerged from a patrol car shouting about an “insult to the intelligence of the American people” while deputies pushed him inside a courthouse. The 26-year-old Ivy League graduate from a prominent Maryland real estate family is fighting attempts to extradite him to New York to face a murder charge in the Manhattan killing of Brian Thompson, who led the United States’ largest medical insurance company. A law enforcement bulletin obtained by The Associated Press said that at the time of his arrest, Mangione carried a handwritten document expressing anger with what he called “parasitic” health insurance companies and a disdain for corporate greed and power. He wrote that the U.S. has the most expensive health care system in the world and that profits of major corporations continue to increase while “our life expectancy” does not, according to the bulletin. In social media posts, Mangione called “Unabomber” Ted Kaczynski — who carried out a series of bombings while railing against modern society and technology — a “political revolutionary,” according to the bulletin. Mangione remained jailed in Pennsylvania, where he was initially charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm, forgery and providing false identification to police. Manhattan prosecutors began to take steps to bring Mangione to New York, but at a brief hearing Tuesday, defense lawyer Thomas Dickey said his client will not waive extradition and instead wants a hearing on the issue. Mangione was denied bail after prosecutors said he was too dangerous to be released. “You can’t rush to judgment in this case or any case,” Dickey said afterward. “He’s presumed innocent. Let’s not forget that.” New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said Tuesday night on the social platform X that she will sign “a request for a governor’s warrant to ensure the suspect in the murder of Brian Thompson is held accountable in New York.” Mangione was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania, about 230 miles west of New York City, after a McDonald’s customer recognized him and notified an employee, authorities said. An image of Mangione released Tuesday by Pennsylvania State Police showed him pulling down his mask in the corner of the McDonald’s while holding what appeared to be hash browns and wearing a winter jacket and beanie. New York police officials said Mangione was carrying a gun like the one used to kill Thompson and the same fake ID the shooter had used to check into a New York hostel, along with a passport and other fraudulent IDs. A law enforcement official who spoke with The Associated Press on condition of anonymity said a handwritten document found with Mangione included a line in which he claimed to have acted alone. “To the Feds, I’ll keep this short, because I do respect what you do for our country. To save you a lengthy investigation, I state plainly that I wasn’t working with anyone,” the document said, according to the official. It also said, “I do apologize for any strife or traumas but it had to be done. Frankly, these parasites simply had it coming.” Thompson, 50, was killed last Wednesday as he walked alone to a Manhattan hotel for an investor conference. From surveillance video, New York investigators determined the shooter quickly fled the city, likely by bus. Mangione was born into a life of country clubs and privilege. His grandfather was a real estate developer and philanthropist. Valedictorian at his elite Baltimore prep school, he went on to earn undergraduate and graduate degrees in computer science in 2020 from the University of Pennsylvania, a spokesperson said. “Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi’s arrest,” Mangione’s family said in a statement posted on social media late Monday by his cousin, Maryland Del. Nino Mangione. “We offer our prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and we ask people to pray for all involved.” From January to June 2022, Luigi Mangione lived at Surfbreak, a “co-living” space at the edge of touristy Waikiki in Honolulu. Like other residents of the shared penthouse catering to remote workers, Mangione underwent a background check, said Josiah Ryan, a spokesperson for owner and founder R.J. Martin. “Luigi was just widely considered to be a great guy. There were no complaints,” Ryan said. “There was no sign that might point to these alleged crimes they’re saying he committed.” At Surfbreak, Martin learned Mangione had severe back pain from childhood that interfered with many aspects of his life, from surfing to romance, Ryan said. Mangione left Surfbreak to get surgery on the mainland, Ryan said, then later returned to Honolulu and rented an apartment. Martin stopped hearing from Mangione six months to a year ago. SANTA CLARA — Brock Purdy is charged with distributing the ball to the 49ers’ still-plentiful array of offensive weapons. On Tuesday, he threw disgruntled wide receiver Deebo Samuel his full support. “I want to get Deebo the ball every play if I could,” Purdy said. “I want to have him break all the records as best as possible. I want Deebo to do Deebo things, and we all do in this building.” Thing is, Samuel’s sub-par production this season has mirrored the 49ers’ rocky road to a 6-7 record entering Thursday night’s visit by the Rams (7-6). “Not struggling at all just not getting the ball!!!!!!!” Samuel wrote Monday in a since-deleted post on the social media platform X. The timing off that complaint was peculiar. The 49ers had just shaken a three-game losing streak with a 38-13 win over the Chicago Bears, a game Samuel acknowledged was their best offensive showing and most complementary outing. But the 49ers did so with minimal production again from Samuel, who had two catches for 22 yards and five carries for 13 yards. “You read what you read. A little frustrated, for sure,” Samuel said Tuesday at his locker before practice. General manager John Lynch asked 49ers fans to give Samuel “some grace,” and coach Kyle Shanahan also threw support behind Samuel’s gripes. “Deebo and I talk every day so I understand Deebo saying that,” Shanahan said. “Deebo wants to help us out, and the only way he is helping us is getting the ball more. And we’d like to get him the ball more.” Samuel, a two-time captain, has scored just two touchdowns (Week 1 run, Week 5 reception) after 12 last regular season; he had 14 in 2021. He missed the 49ers’ Week 3 loss in Los Angeles because of a calf injury. Three years removed from his All-Pro breakout season, Samuel’s production has taken a nosedive this season, even though he is getting the ball. His 72 touches (40 receptions for 533 yards, 32 carries for 92 yards) are second to only now-injured running back Jordan Mason’s 164. In an X post 10 minutes after complaining about his opportunities, Samuel wrote : “Just cause I voice my opinions don’t mean I’m hating on any of my teammates!!” Jauan Jennings (57 catches, 774 yards, six touchdowns) and tight end George Kittle (56-800-8) have seized more on their targets from Brock Purdy, while 2022-23 mainstays Brandon Aiyuk and Christian McCaffrey have missed most of the season injured. “We’d always love things to stay in-house,” Shanahan said. “It’s probably why I don’t go on social media: I’d get worked up if I was reading stuff all the time. Is it a distraction in our building? No.” “He’s one of my best friends on this team. I absolutely love Deebo and what he’s done for me,” Purdy said. “He’s right: he’s doing great right now with what we ask of him the offense. He’s not struggling. Like Ricky (Pearsall) or Aiyuk last year a little bit, there are moments through a season where guys just don’t get the ball, depending on defensive schemes and taking guys away.” Samuel has flourished in the 49ers’ rivalry against the Rams, including three years ago when his “wide back” persona emerged as he scored on both a run and a reception to lead the victorious 49ers out of a 3-5 rut and toward the playoffs. That dual-threat duty is not such an inventive concept anymore, however. “They’re not surprised anymore,” Samuel said. “We’ve been doing it almost three years now, so you’ve got a 50-50 chance whether I’m in the backfield getting a handoff or anything along those lines. They have a glimpse of what’s going on. ... There’s three or four (defenders awaiting) no matter who has the ball.” “Deebo has created such a high standard, the things he’s done, the innovation which we’ve created things for Deebo. That’s part of the problem,” said Lynch, noting that multiple teams now deploy Samuel-esque, dual-threat players that no longer surprise defenses. “... That frustration mounts. But he’s made so many plays for us, I think we need to give this guy some grace and bring him along, because we need him the rest of the way,” Lynch added. “We need him Thursday night. Deebo’s a big part of this team. We’re alright. We can all learn from different situations and a lot of things in the world these days that you can get caught up in.” Some of Samuel’s most productive efforts this season have come as a kick returner (11 returns for 333 yards, including six returns in their Dec. 1 loss at Buffalo). “We’ve got a lot of big football to play and he’ll be a big part of our season moving forward,” Lynch said. As for next season, Samuel carries a $16 million mark on the salary cap. The 49ers restructured his contract in March, so he would incur a $31.6 million hit if he’s released or traded before June 1; after that date, an exit would count $11 million in 2025 and $21 million in ’26. GUERENDO IDLING Running back Isaac Guerendo’s foot sprain Sunday kept him out of Tuesday’s light walkthrough and it’s uncertain whether he’ll make a second straight start. Guerendo ran for 78 yards and two touchdowns, and he had 50 yards on two catches, before exiting and bequeathing the backfield to Patrick Taylor Jr. Guerendo got clocked at 20.2 mph on a 30-yard, second-quarter carry that was the NFL’s fastest by a running back in Week 14. GREENLAW UPDATE The 49ers remain reluctant to declare whether linebacker Dre Greenlaw will make his season debut Thursday night, the date pegged for his comeback from an Achilles tear in the Super Bowl. Shanahan said there’s been no setback, that he merely wants to talk first to Greenlaw and see how the next two days go. OTHER INJURY UPDATES Defensive end Nick Bosa (oblique, hip) and left tackle Trent Williams (ankle) will officially miss the fourth week of practice, albeit this week’s only consisting of Tuesday’s walk-through that began at 5:10 p.m. Shanahan has not indicated whether they’ll miss a fourth straight game. While left guard Aaron Banks practiced for the first time since a Nov. 24 concussion in Green Bay, guard Ben Bartch (ankle) did not practice and is expected to go on Injured Reserve before Thursday’s kickoff. Limited were defensive end Yetur Gross-Matos, safety Malik Mustapha, and linebackers Dee Winters and Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles. HARGRAVE MOVEMENT Defensive tackle Javon Hargrave’s bloated contract was restructured to lessen the 49ers’ financial restraints next year. While that could stage his potential release after two seasons, as pointed out by OverTheCap.com, Hargrave is also more affordable to keep, seeing how his 2025 salary was chopped from $19.9 million to $2.1 million, and his salary cap mark fell from $28 million to $10.3 million. “The plan for him is to be a Niner,” Shanahan said, deferring business matters to the front office staff. “The mechanics of contract stuff, those are things I don’t look into until after the offseason.” Hargrave, 31, has been on injured reserve since tearing a biceps in the Sept. 22 loss at Los Angeles. He made the Pro Bowl last season and totaled seven sacks in his first year with the 49ers. Jordan Elliott replaced him in this season’s lineup next to Maliek Collins, with rookie Evan Anderson, Kevin Givens, Kalia Davis and Khalil Davis also in the interior rotation.
