For more than a decade, the United States has sought to keep out of Syria's political debacle, seeing no viable partner. Islamist rebels' toppling of strongman Bashar al-Assad has forced a change of tune -- and a debate over just what US interests are. Donald Trump, who returns to the White House in little more than a month, on the eve of Assad's fall called Syria "a mess" and stated in his plain-speaking style that the United States should not be involved. Joe Biden's administration, after putting Syria on the backburner in a turbulent region, has offered a tacit rebuttal by stating that clear US interests are at stake -- including preventing Syria from fragmenting and avoiding a resurgence of the Islamic State extremist group. Steven Cook, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, said Trump's and Biden's statements could be combined and "together they make a kind of decent policy." The United States needs to address real concerns about the Islamic State group and Al-Qaeda but "as far as getting involved in arranging the politics of Syria, I think that no good can come from it," Cook said. Since the presidency of Barack Obama, the United States has walked a fine line on Syria that critics often derided as a non-policy. The United States questioned the legitimacy of Assad, demanding accountability for brutality in one of the 21st century's deadliest wars, but stopped short of prioritizing his departure due to suspicions about the main rebels. The Islamist movement Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which has now led Assad's ouster, traces its roots to Syria's Al-Qaeda branch and is considered a terrorist organization by the United States. Since Obama's time, the United States instead has allied itself in Syria with a smaller fighting force of the Kurdish minority -- over strenuous objections of neighboring Turkey, which backs HTS -- with a narrow mission to counter the Islamic State group. Some 900 US troops remain in Syria. Assad fell in a lighting surprise offensive as his protector Russia is bogged down in its invasion of Ukraine and after Israel's military heavily degraded Assad's other key supporters -- Iran and Lebanese militia Hezbollah. Robert Ford, the last US ambassador to Syria, helped spearhead the terrorist designation of HTS in 2012 but said that the group since then has not attacked US or Western targets and has instead fought Al-Qaeda and Islamic State forces. Ford also pointed with hope to post-victory statements by rebel chief Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, including welcoming international monitoring of any chemical weapons that are discovered. "Can you imagine Osama bin Laden saying that?" said Ford, now a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute. "I'm not saying 'trust Jolani.' He's obviously authoritarian. He's obviously an Islamist who doesn't believe that Christians have an equal right to power as Muslims. But I sure as hell want to test him on some of these things," Ford said. He said that the United States should encourage HTS, as well as other Syrian actors, to reach out and reassure the country's diverse communities including Christians, Kurds and Alawites -- the sect of the secular-oriented Assad. Beyond that, Washington should take a back-seat and let Syrians sort out their future, he said. "We should learn from the experience in Iraq that trying to impose exiles on a population traumatized by a brutal dictatorship and war is not a recipe for success," Ford said. Outgoing Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Tuesday offered US recognition to a future government that is "credible, inclusive and non-sectarian." Trump in his first term, at the urging of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, abruptly said he would pull troops out of Syria. He backtracked after intense criticism at home and appeals from French President Emmanuel Macron, who pointed to the risk of Islamic State filling the vacuum. Trump has not indicated how he would change Syria policy this time. But he has shown no reluctance in the past to negotiate with foreign adversaries on the US blacklist, from Afghanistan's Taliban to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said there was no legal restriction on US contact with designated terrorists, although he indicated there was no direct dialogue with HTS. Natasha Hall, a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said Syria could face "devastating economic and humanitarian consequences" unless the United States reconsiders the terrorist designation of HTS, which impedes aid groups. "That said," she said, "if there isn't sort of an established framework for negotiations and good behavior now, before that designation is lifted, that could potentially also be a major mistake down the line for Syria's future." sct/smsMattia Zaccagni scored one and assisted another as Lazio finally broke down 10-man Bologna to stay in joint second place, but Tommaso Pobega’s moment of madness was costly. The Biancocelesti hoped to keep their impressive recent form going in Italy and Europe, but while Nuno Tavares was and Boulaye Dia not fully fit after a malaria scare, Pedro started despite a muscular issue. Bologna had won their last three Serie A games, but Lukasz Skorupski had flu with Nicolò Cambiaghi, Dan Ndoye, Michel Aebischer, Martin Erlic and Oussama El Azzouzi on the treatment table. Taty Castellanos spotted the goalkeeper off his line and attempted a lob from midfield that was not far off target, then tried a back-heel flick on Manuel Lazzari’s assist that Nicola Ravaglia smothered from six yards. Santiago Castro drilled wide from the edge of the box after Riccardo Orsolini step-overs and let him down when sent clear by Castellanos, but the game changed on 35 minutes. Tommaso Pobega was the only player on a yellow card and he was over-enthusiastic on the high press as Lazio played out from the back, scything down Guendouzi from behind for a second booking. Lazio poured forward and almost scored when Matias Vecino pulled back from the by-line for a Castellanos back-heel flick, which Luca Pellegrini was about to tap in at the far post until a desperate Orsolini block. Alessio Romagnoli went off at half-time with a fitness issue, but Lazio wasted a golden opportunity when Castellanos nodded the Vecino cross wide of an open goal at the back post. Boulaye Dia came on and had the ball in the net on 65 minutes with a header from point-blank range, but Castellanos was in an offside position when putting in the cross from the right. Lazio took the lead moments later, as this time Samuel Gigot was onside when crouching at the back post for the diving header on an in-swinging Mattia Zaccagni corner. A second followed quickly, as Luca Pellegrini started the move from his own half, feeding Zaccagni to cut inside from the left and curl right-footed into the far bottom corner from 14 yards. With the last kick of the game, everyone assumed it was a penalty for Lazio as Manuel Lazzari rolled across and Ravaglia caught Gustav Isaksen’s ankle, but Fisayo Dele-Bashiru put the loose ball into the empty net before the referee could interrupt play. This seals a seventh consecutive victory in all competition for the Biancocelesti. Google Fiber, the high-speed internet service known for its fiber-optic network and impressive speeds, has announced a major overhaul of its plans and branding. The company is introducing three new tiers: Core 1 Gig, Home 3 Gig, and a lightning-fast Edge 8 Gig plan. This move comes as Google Fiber aims to attract new customers and solidify its position in the increasingly competitive internet service provider (ISP) market. These changes, rolled out initially in select US cities, signal Google Fiber’s commitment to providing faster, more reliable internet access to meet the growing demands of modern households. With streaming services, online gaming, and smart home devices becoming increasingly prevalent , the need for robust internet connectivity has never been greater. Google Fiber’s new plans aim to address this need head-on. What’s New? A Closer Look at the Plans My Experience with Google Fiber I’ve been a Google Fiber customer for about three years now, and I’ve always been impressed with their service. Initially, I was drawn to their straightforward plans and symmetrical gigabit speeds. Coming from a cable internet provider with frustratingly slow upload speeds, the difference was night and day. With Google Fiber, large file uploads for work became a breeze, video calls were crystal clear, and my family could stream and game simultaneously without any buffering or lag. Their customer service has also been consistently helpful and responsive. I’m excited to see how these new plans further enhance my internet experience. Why This Matters Google Fiber’s revamp is more than just a cosmetic change. It reflects a broader trend in the telecommunications industry: What’s Next for Google Fiber? While the new plans and branding are a significant step, Google Fiber isn’t resting on its laurels. The company continues to expand its fiber network, bringing its services to new cities and communities. Furthermore, Google Fiber is actively exploring new technologies and innovations to further enhance its offerings and solidify its position as a leader in the high-speed internet market. This is an exciting time for internet users. With Google Fiber leading the charge with its multi-gigabit plans, the future of connectivity looks brighter and faster than ever before.

Union minister Jitendra Singh on Sunday held a nearly two-hour 'Public Durbar' (public meeting) in Jammu and Kashmir 's Kathua district , asserting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi led government is committed to resolve public issues at their doorsteps. Singh, who won Udhampur parliamentary constituency for third term in a row, held the public durbar at Marheen block of Hiranagar sector near the International border. It was a part of his ongoing spree to reach out to the public directly to listen to their issues and concerns. Several issues raised by individual citizens and delegations were resolved on-the-spot. Instructions for immediate action were issued in several other cases, an official said. He said the entire district administration led by Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Minhas and senior officers from various departments were also present for instant intervention and follow-up. This is the third such Public Durbar in different parts of Kathua district in recent months. "Elected representatives owe the obligation of not only addressing the genuine requirements of the electorate but also to seek to convince them that they are cared for and heard. And, a Public Durbar like this serves that purpose," the minister of state in the Prime Minister's office said. The champions crashed to a fifth straight defeat in all competitions – something not experienced by the club in more than 18 years – as they were thrashed 4-0 by Tottenham at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday. The loss, which was also a third in succession in the Premier League and shattered a 52-game unbeaten home run, damaged the club’s hopes of winning an unprecedented fifth title in a row. It is the worst run of Guardiola’s glittering managerial career and the City boss, who extended his contract until 2027 last week, is determined to turn the situation around. The Catalan said: “When we start to lose I say to the people I have to find a way, I have to. It’s my duty, my responsibility, to find a way to be more consistent, that our game will be better and win games. “This is what we have to do.” City have been hampered by injuries to key players in recent weeks, particularly by the absence of Ballon d’Or-winning midfielder Rodri, who has been sidelined for the remainder of the season. Problems have emerged at both ends of the field with a lack of clean sheets – just five in 19 outings this term – and a shortage of goals being scored on occasions, like Saturday, when the prolific Erling Haaland has an off-day. Guardiola said: “We don’t expect to lose important players but it’s happened and you have to find a way. We have to find other abilities. “I don’t think we didn’t create enough chances. We created a lot of chances, clear ones at 0-0, 0-1, 0-2. “Of course we want a lot of players to score but it’s happened now. “I know at the Etihad when we are there and we score goals our momentum is there, but now we are not solid enough. That is the truth. “In both sides normally we are solid but we concede the goals. Now in both sides we are not good enough. “In these situations, what do you have do to? Keep going my friends, keep going. “We have done it in the past – not in terms of results being as bad as now – but we have done it and we face the situation and move forward.”Gainers Chimerix CMRX shares moved upwards by 150.9% to $2.17 during Tuesday's pre-market session.
