NoneMother blasts 'insulting' sentence for teen driver who left her paralysed and unable to hug her son - saying she feels 'indescribable anger' towards 19-year-old who left her 'in a living nightmare'But do we want to do research on all topics, and shall we try the AI master key on every door? To explore this question, let’s consider the use of AI by genomics experts as an example. In recent years, genomics experts have added unbelievable depth to what we know about the world and ourselves. For example, genetics researchers have revealed facts about when certain animals and plants were domesticated. In another example, researchers used DNA from 30,000-year-old permafrost to create fertile samples of a plant called narrow-leafed campion. Importantly, genetic engineering has facilitated extraordinary advances in the treatment of complicated conditions, such as sickle-cell anemia. Thanks to AI, we are witnessing a dramatic increase in the pace and scalability of genomic exploration. But given the risks and possible consequences of AI use in science, should we rush headlong into using AI in all kinds of projects? One relevant example is research on Neanderthals, our closest relatives, who lived about 40,000 years ago. Neanderthals have been studied for several years now through genetic investigation of their fossils and their DNA. Genetic engineering can potentially use ancient DNA- and genome- editing methods to re-create a Neanderthal or aspects of a Neanderthal’s genetics and physiology. To do this, scientists could start by figuring out the DNA sequence of a Neanderthal by comparing it with the DNA of modern humans, because they are closely related. Then, scientists could use the gene-editing tool known as CRISPR to swap out parts of human DNA with Neanderthal DNA. This process would require a lot of trial and error and might not succeed soon. But based on what we know about genetics, if something is possible, AI can help make it happen faster, cheaper and with less effort. Scientists are excited about these developments because they could facilitate new discoveries and open up many research opportunities in genetic research. With or without AI, research on Neanderthals will proceed. But the extraordinary power of AI could give the final push to these discoveries and facilitate this kind of resurrection. At that point, the scientific community must develop norms and guidelines about how to treat these resurrected beings with dispositions very similar to humans. We would need to carefully consider their rights and well-being almost in the same way as when humans are involved and not as research subjects or artifacts of scientific curiosity. These ethical issues are discussed in more detail in a new paper published in the journal Nature Machine Intelligence. A more holistic question to consider is: Should we prioritize the use of resource-intensive AI, researchers’ time and public funds to resurrect extinct beings? Or should we invest these resources into conserving species that are critically endangered today to prevent biodiversity from more degradation?

The children's hospital said it was working with the National Crime Agency after the data was stolen and posted on the dark web Alder Hey Children's Hospital is working with the National Crime Agency after data was stolen and illegally posted online. Alder Hey confirmed on Thursday, November 28 that it was aware data from systems shared by the children's hospital and Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital NHS Foundation Trust had been hacked and shared online. Technology trade magazines have reported that a cyber criminal operation called the INC Ransom group claims to have stolen the data. It's been reported that the group have published screenshots of data on the dark web that contains the personal information of patients, donations from benefactors and procurement information. The children's hospital said: "We are aware that data has been published online and shared via social media that purports to have been obtained illegally from systems shared by Alder Hey and Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital NHS Foundation Trust . We are working with partners to verify the data that has been published and to understand the potential impact. "We are taking this issue very seriously and are working with the National Crime Agency as well as partner organisations to secure our systems and to take further steps in line with law enforcement advice as well as our statutory duties relating to patient data." Alder Hey said the incident was not linked to issues seen at Wirral University Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust earlier this week. The Wirral trust - responsible for Arrowe Park Hospital, Clatterbridge Hospital and Wirral Women and Children's Hospital - was the victim of a cyber attack on Monday, November 25. Hundreds of appointments were cancelled and staff were forced to manually record notes as the systems holding records were down. In an update yesterday the hospital trust said it expected the issues to continue over the weekend with some procedures postponed. However, the Wirral trust said people were advised to continue to attend scheduled appointments unless told otherwise. Despite the data breach, Alder Hey - which treats more than 450,000 patients a year making it one of Europe's busiest children's hospitals - said its services continue to operate as normal and "patients should attend appointments as usual". Infosecurity Magazine reported INC Ransom had posted on its data leak site that it had obtained large-scale data patient records, donor reports and procurement data for 2018-2024 from the children's hospital. ComputerWeekly added the cyber group claimed in March this year to have stolen data concerning over 140,000 clinical and back-office staff across the NHS in Scotland.Rams claim CB Emmanuel Forbes off waivers from Washington
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Rams have claimed cornerback Emmanuel Forbes off waivers from Washington. The Rams (6-6) announced the move Monday. They waived undrafted rookie defensive back Charles Woods to make room on the roster. Forbes was the 16th overall draft pick in 2023, but the Commanders released him Saturday in yet another latest flop for their first-round selections under former coach Ron Rivera. Forbes started 10 games as a rookie, but the Mississippi State product got benched during the season — and his playing time dwindled to almost nothing under new coach Dan Quinn this season. Forbes was considered undersized to be an elite NFL defensive back before Washington used a first-round pick on him, and his play did little to discourage that perception. But the Rams are taking a flier on Forbes to help their mediocre pass defense. Darious Williams, a member of the Rams' Super Bowl championship team who returned to Los Angeles this season as a free agent, has been their best cover corner, but he struggled in Sunday's victory over New Orleans. Third-year pro Cobie Durant has started all 12 games this season with one interception. Los Angeles already traded Tre'Davious White, its other major offseason signing at cornerback, after the former Pro Bowler failed to perform. The Rams shipped White to Baltimore for a seventh-round pick swap last month. Woods has played in nine games for the Rams, appearing mostly on special teams. Los Angeles hosts Buffalo on Sunday. Trump if they don’t stop what he called the flow of drugs and migrants across their borders with the United States. He said on social media last week that he would impose a 25% tax on as one of his first executive orders. Canadian Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc, whose responsibilities include border security, attended a dinner with Trump and Trudeau at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club on Friday. Trudeau requested the meeting in that the northern border is . “The prime minister of course spoke about the importance of protecting the Canadian economy and Canadian workers from tariffs, but we also discussed with our American friends the negative impact that those tariffs could have on their economy, on affordability in the United States as well,” LeBlanc said in Parliament. If Trump on everything imported from Mexico and Canada, with his campaign promise to give American families a break from inflation. Economists say companies would have little choice but to pass along the added costs, for food, clothing, automobiles, alcohol and other goods. The Produce Distributors Association, a Washington trade group, said last week that tariffs will raise prices for fresh fruit and vegetables and hurt U.S. farmers when the countries retaliate. Canada is already tariffs on certain items from the U.S. should Trump follow through on the threat. After his dinner with Trump, returned home without assurances the president-elect will back away from threatened tariffs on all products from the major American trading partner. Trump called the talks “productive” but signaled no retreat from a pledge that Canada says unfairly lumps it in with Mexico over the flow of drugs and migrants into the United States. “The idea that we came back empty handed is completely false,” LeBlanc said. “We had a very productive discussion with Mr. Trump and his future Cabinet secretaries. ... The commitment from Mr. Trump to continue to work with us was far from empty handed.” Joining Trump and Trudeau at dinner were Howard Lutnick, Trump’s nominee for commerce secretary, North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, Trump’s pick to lead the Interior Department, and Mike Waltz, Trump’s choice to be his national security adviser. Canada’s ambassador to the U.S., Kirsten Hillman, told The Associated Press on Sunday that “the message that our border is so vastly different than the Mexican border was really understood.” Hillman, who sat at an adjacent table to Trudeau and Trump, said Canada is not the problem when it comes to drugs and migrants. On Monday, Mexico’s president rejected those comments. “Mexico must be respected, especially by its trading partners,” President Claudia Sheinbaum said. She said Canada had its own problems with fentanyl consumption and “could only wish they had the cultural riches Mexico has.” Related Articles Flows of migrants and seizures of drugs at the two countries’ border are vastly different. U.S. customs agents seized 43 pounds of fentanyl at the Canadian border during the last fiscal year, compared with 21,100 pounds at the Mexican border. Most of the fentanyl reaching the U.S. — where it causes about 70,000 overdose deaths annually — is using precursor chemicals smuggled from Asia. On immigration, the U.S. Border Patrol reported 1.53 million encounters with migrants at the southwest border with Mexico between October 2023 and September 2024. That compares to 23,721 encounters at the Canadian border during that time. Canada is the top export destination for 36 U.S. states. Nearly $3.6 billion Canadian (US$2.7 billion) worth of goods and services cross the border each day. About 60% of U.S. crude oil imports are from Canada, and 85% of U.S. electricity imports as well. Canada is also the largest foreign supplier of steel, aluminum and uranium to the U.S. and has 34 critical minerals and metals that the Pentagon is eager for and investing for national security.Viewers were taken aback at the start of episode ahead of Dean McCullough's sixth Bushtucker Trial I'm A Celebrity viewers were baffled as ITV issued a warning at the start of tonight's episode. The four-day event aims to popularise science and technology across diverse communities, with over 8,000 delegates, researchers, and scientific organisations participating. The festival will also host 12,000 students, including 1,500 from Assam, fostering collaboration and innovation. “These students will experience the vibrancy of this scientific extravaganza while staying on campus,” said Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. During his address, Chief Minister Sarma lauded the recently approved “One Nation, One Subscription” policy, which ensures access to prestigious academic journals for over 6,300 higher education institutions. “This initiative enables resource-limited institutions to benefit from global research,” he noted, urging Singh to include the Northeast’s educational institutions in the programme. Sarma also underscored the transformative role of science in national prosperity. “In today’s world, technology is the most transformative force. By harnessing science, a nation can overcome resource limitations and reduce dependency on external capital,” he said. Highlighting advancements in sectors like agriculture, healthcare, and energy, the Chief Minister described science as a key driver for improving living standards, reducing poverty, and achieving social equity. Apple readies more conversational Siri in bid to catch up in AIIt took far longer than anyone in the organization preferred, but the Utica Comets finally ended its winless streak. The Comets notched a 4-3 win Friday at the Syracuse Crunch — eventual American Hockey League Player of the Week Mike Hardman scored the game-winner with 73 seconds remaining — and then showed an opportunistic side less than 24 hours later in a 5-1 road victory over the Rochester Americans. Both Isaac Poulter (26 saves Friday) and Nico Daws (35 saves Saturday) were sharp in earning their first wins of the season. The results snapped the team-record 13-winless streak to start the season (technically 14, dating to the 23-24 season finale). The wins give the Comets a 2-10-2-1 overall record, getting them a step closer to no longer having the worst record in the 32-team league. Saturday's five goals were a season-best. Notably, the team totaled nine goals over the two wins which constitutes 30% of the total goals this season. The offensive outburst is a positive step for the Comets, who were averaging 1.6 goals per game entering the weekend. Hardman earns honor For his play on the weekend, Hardman was named Player of the Week on Monday. It is the first time the 25-year-old winger has earned the AHL's weekly award. Hardman totaled four points, including the eventual game-winners on Friday and Saturday. Hardman, returning from a three-game injury absence, had an assist to help give Utica a two-goal lead on Friday, before scoring two go-ahead goals in the third period, the second one coming with 1:13 remaining to help Utica get the win. Hardman, a fourth-year pro from Massachusetts, has four goals and one assist in seven games with the Comets this season. He signed as a free agent with the parent New Jersey Devils in the offseason. He's is the first Comets player to be named AHL Player of the Week since Dec. 25, 2022 (Graeme Clarke). Hardman is the eighth Comets player to earn the weekly honor since 2013. Holding off Syracuse Comets' captain Ryan Schmelzer ended two other droughts with the game's opening goal in the first period Friday in Syracuse. It was his first goal of the season and it snapped a stretch of 138 minutes the team had gone without a goal over parts or all of four games. While on the power play, Schmelzer circled into the left faceoff dot and took a snap pass from rookie defenseman Seamus Casey and one-timed a rocket past sprawling goaltender Matt Tomkins. The Comets had not scored in a 2-0 loss at home the previous weekend. Utica;s lead doubled when Beckman got his second point of the night, 2:41 into the second period. When the puck came out from along the boards in the offensive zone, Hardman took a shot from far out as Beckman drove the net and tipped it in over Tomkins' glove. It was Beckman's third goal of the season and Hardman's first assist. Syracuse cashed on two power plays in the second and third period to tie the game. Hardman grabbed the lead back with his second goal of the season with just under 10 minutes left in regulation. The puck was pushed to him on a rebound, and he ripped a shot from the right faceoff circle that hit the back of the net, putting the Comets up 3-2. The Crunch's Conor Sheary then tied the game with 4:40 left in regulation. However, a second power-play tally for the Comets was the goal that finally ended the winless streak. Hardman sent a rebound off his own initial shot past Tomkins. After work on special teams leading into the game, Utica finished 2-for-3 on the power play. Though, the penalty kill finished 1-for-3. It was the first AHL coaching win for interim coach Ryan Parent. Rolling past Rochester While it wasn't the prettiest of outings — Utica had six total shots through 26 minutes of game time, for example — Utica was opportunistic Saturday in Rochester. It snapped a three-game winless streak vs. the Amerks. It helped Utica's power play also scored twice, including the first goal of the game 8:44 into the opening period by Brian Halonen. He scored through a mess of bodies in front after a short pass from Xavier Parent. Utica's three-goal second period helped give the team a 4-0 lead and Comets came within 10.8 seconds of shutting out the Amerks before Brendan Warren scored the Amerks' only goal in the 5-1 loss. Utica extended the lead to 4-0 over a less than nine-minute span with goals from Hardman (from the bottom of the right circle), Halonen (one-timer from the left circle on the power play) and Nathan Légaré tapping in the puck on feed from Topias Vilen on the rush. That goal ended Felix Sandstrom’s night (11 saves on 15 shots). Schmelzer scored from the top of the right circle near the midpoint of the third. It was the sixth loss in seven games for Rochester. Casey, points leader Casey, playing in his 11th game with Utica, finished with back-to-back two-point games. He leads the team 13 points, including a team-best 12 assists. His points are tied for seventh among all AHL rookies. Upcoming The Comets have their final home game of November at 7 p.m. Wednesday against Providence. It is the first of two visits for Boston's AHL affiliate. Utica then heads to Springfield for a 4:05 p.m. game Friday in Massachusetts. Then, Utica meets Providence again at 7 p.m. Saturday in Rhode Island to close November.
