Truck fire closes northbound Hume Highway lanes, diversions in placeTuSimple has completed its pivot away from autonomous trucking to AI animation and gaming with a rebrand. The company shall henceforth be known as CreateAI. The rebrand comes as TuSimple is embroiled in controversy over the company’s plans to move its remaining U.S. assets to China to fund the new business, which it initially announced in August. TuSimple shut down its U.S. self-driving truck operations and delisted from the stock market in January 2024, three years after raising $1.35 billion in its IPO. The company had originally planned to restart operations in China, but earlier this year, TuSimple parted ways with most of its autonomous driving staff. Shortly after, it started hiring for roles related to AI animation and gaming. Shareholders have objected to the business pivot and accused Mo Chen, TuSimple’s other co-founder, chief producer and director, of self-dealing. Chen owns or has ties to several other animation and gaming companies. And it appears Chen’s other businesses are involved in TuSimple/CreateAI’s new venture. In a recent filing , TuSimple said that the board approved a $25 million deal in November with two game development companies that are affiliated with Chen to develop and distribute “Heroes of Jin Yong,” a role-playing video game. To reduce potential conflicts of interest, in May 2024, Chen transferred his ownership interest in those companies to a trust that he does not control, though the beneficiaries of the trust are members of his family, per the filing. CreateAI doesn’t have an active AV development program. But in September, TuSimple CEO Cheng Lu told TechCrunch the company still intended to license its self-driving technology to partners in China. CreateAI’s business plan, published Wednesday, also references a plan to monetize existing autonomous driving IP. Some shareholders, notably co-founder and former CEO Xiaodi Hou, want to prevent the company from moving its remaining cash assets, which were $450 million in September, to China. Hou earlier this week called on shareholders to help him overturn the board of directors and replace them with a board that would liquidate the company and return all existing cash to stockholders. CreateAI’s plan for that capital is becoming more clear. Alongside its rebrand, CreateAI has announced the debut of its first major “image-to-video” AI model named “Ruyi,” which is available open-source on Hugging Face. The company said in a statement that it developed Ruyi in under six months in part by leveraging “technological know-how building upon the company’s autonomous driving expertise.” CreateAI says its model also lays the foundation for proprietary AI tools and infrastructure for video game and anime content development. “We are confident that our integrated approach at the intersection of generative AI and digital entertainment creation is a differentiating factor, one that provides significant long-term growth opportunities,” Lu said in a statement. CreateAI, which is also working with Japanese anime designer Shōji Kawamori to bring “Father of Macross” to life via animated feature film and video game, also unveiled its long-term business strategy for generative AI animation and gaming.

Two U.S. lawmakers reportedly want the country to rethink its banking relationship with Hong Kong. Rep. John Moolenaar , R-Michigan, and Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi , D-Illinois, sent a letter to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen asking how the department plans to combat money laundering and sanctions evasion conducted through Hong Kong’s financial system, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported Monday (Nov. 25). Moolenaar and Krishnamoorthi are the chairman and ranking member, respectively, of the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party , which is focused on competition with China, according to the report. Their letter to Yellen will be released publicly Monday, the report said. “Hong Kong has shifted from a trusted global financial center to a critical player in the deepening authoritarian axis of the People’s Republic of China, Iran, Russia and North Korea,” the lawmakers said in the letter, per the report. “We must now question whether longstanding U.S. policy towards Hong Kong, particularly towards its financial and banking sector, is appropriate.” A spokesman for the Hong Kong government told the WSJ that the allegation is unfounded and that Hong Kong has a system to prevent the illegal diversion of strategic commodities. Hong Kong has a special status within China but has been drawn closer to the country and has cracked down on dissidents, according to the WSJ report. Moolenaar and Krishnamoorthi accused Hong Kong of enabling the export of controlled technology to Russia, aiding the purchase of Iranian oil and facilitating other violation of U.S. trade controls, per the report. It was reported in April that sanctions on payments between China and Russia have created a thriving market for middlemen and that half of all payments by Russian companies for Chinese products are now handled by intermediaries. The U.S. Treasury has warned that it could impose sanctions on entities that facilitate transactions and has asked foreign banks to increase compliance. In August, it was reported that Russia was preparing to begin trials of cryptocurrency exchanges and cross-border crypto transactions to solve the payment troubles the country has been facing after more than two years of worldwide sanctions triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. From Chili's 'triple dipper' to The Cheesecake Factory, restaurant chains are reviving malls

Is the truth really out there? After a spat of recent mysterious unidentified drone sightings, in New Jersey and elsewhere in the world, many believe we aren’t alone in the universe. Re those mysterious UFO drones over New Jersey: What could they possibly be? Let's see... —long cylindrical tube —2 big wings in front —2 small wings in back —blinking lights matching FAA required pattern... I give up. I guess we'll never know. “We have not identified anything anomalous or any national security or public safety risks over the civilian airspace in New Jersey or other states in the northeast,” John Kirby, White House security official, said in a . While the New Jersey drone sightings have captured a lot of media attention, Christian Stepien confirmed their organization is experiencing a surge in reports of unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP). Stepien is the chief technology officer for the National UFO Reporting Center, a U.S. based non-profit that collects UFO reports from the U.S., Canada and the world. “We’re getting some of the reports of these drones from the Canadian side and some pretty dramatic ones, too, where drones are hovering right over people with super bright light shining down on them,” he said. A scene from History Channel’s documentary, “Unidentified: Inside America’s UFO Investigation.” The organization has received 100s of reports since November — an increase five times their usual volume, Stepien shared. “We got 100 (reports) in one day a few days ago, which is extremely unusual for us,” he said. The Canadian reports are primarily coming from Ontario — and included a video submitted from London. He described it as “one of the most dramatic videos we’ve gotten in a long time.” Stepien said a woman in London saw “one of these drones.” It hovered over a tree in her backyard and was shining an incredibly bright light. According to the National UFO Reporting Center’s website, the incident began at 6:58 p.m., on Dec. 13 and lasted for a period of 3.5 hours where a witness observed multiple large dronelike objects with white lights that flashed red and green. “The event escalated when a giant, bright spotlight silently hovered above the trees in their yard for about 40 minutes,” . “Multiple additional objects, smaller in comparison, seemed to fly around this central light.” Reports have been submitted from other parts of the country including from Alberta, Quebec and British Columbia. You can see all the reports to the National UFO Reporting Center by viewing their . This publication reached out to Canada’s Department of National Defence and the Canadian Security Intelligence Service regarding UFO and/or UAP reports in Canada. “Transport Canada is the lead on this topic concerning UAP investigations and reports,” a spokesperson for National Defence said in an emailed response. Wildlife photographer Ken Rice captures this unidentified object. He was in Oshawa on June 17, 2017, when something unusual suddenly appeared in his camera lens. Transport Canada said they collect aviation occurrence information and enter it into the , known as CADORS. In CADORS reports, Transport Canada said the term “UFO” can include sightings of unmanned air vehicles (UAVs or drones), balloons, meteors, weather phenomena and birds. “It should not be interpreted to mean something of extraterrestrial origin. The information in CADORS should be treated as preliminary, unsubstantiated and subject to change,” said Flavio Nienow, Transport Canada spokesperson, in a statement. Transport Canada said they don’t have any additional information to provide beyond what can be found in CADORS. However, they did not answer specific questions when asked about trends in UFO and/or UAP reports — including location and frequency of reports. The was launched in fall 2022 to study how UAP reports from the public are managed in Canada and to recommend improvements. The office of the chief science adviser is preparing an internal draft report with the collected information, according to a government outline of the report. This release was published on openPR.( MENAFN - Jordan Times) CAIRO - War-torn Sudan is on a "countdown to famine" ignored by world leaders while humanitarian aid is only "delaying deaths", Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) chief Jan Egeland told AFP on Saturday. "We have the biggest humanitarian crisis on the planet in Sudan, the biggest hunger crisis, the biggest displacement crisis... and the world is giving it a shrug," he said in an interview from neighbouring Chad after a visit to Sudan this week. Since April 2023, war has pitted Sudan's regular army against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), killing tens of thousands of people and uprooting more than 11 million. The United Nations says that nearly 26 million people inside Sudan are suffering acute hunger. "I met women barely surviving, eating one meal of boiled leaves a day," Egeland said. One of few organisations to have maintained operations in Sudan, the NRC says some 1.5 million people are "on the edge of famine". "The violence is tearing apart communities much faster than we can come in with aid," Egeland said. "As we struggle to keep up, our current resources are merely delaying deaths instead of preventing them." 'Me first' politics Two decades ago, allegations of genocide brought world attention to Sudan's vast western region of Darfur where the then government in Khartoum unleashed Arab tribal militias against non-Arab minorities suspected of supporting a rebellion. "It is beyond belief that we have a fraction of the interest now for Sudan's crisis than we had 20 years ago for Darfur, when the crisis was actually much smaller," Egeland said. He said Israel's wars in Gaza and Lebanon and Russia's war with Ukraine had been allowed to overshadow the conflict in Sudan. But he said he detected a shift in the "international mood", away from the kind of celebrity-driven campaigns that brought Hollywood star George Clooney to Darfur in the 2000s. "More nationalistic tendencies, more inward-looking," he said of Western governments led by politicians compelled to "put my nation first, me first, not humanity first." "It will come to haunt" these "short-sighted" leaders, when those they failed to assist in their homeland join the tide of refugees and migrants headed north. In Chad, he said he had met young people who just barely survived ethnic cleansing in Darfur, and had made the decision to brave the perilous crossing of the Mediterranean to Europe even though they had friends who had drowned. 'Freefall into starvation' Inside Sudan, one in every five people has been displaced by this or previous conflicts, according to UN figures. Most of those displaced are in Darfur, where Egeland says the situation is "horrific and getting worse". The North Darfur state capital of El-Fasher has been under siege by the RSF for months, nearly disabling all aid operations in the region and pushing the nearby Zamzam displacement camp into famine. But even areas spared the devastation of war "are bursting at the seams," Egeland said. Across the army-controlled east, camps, schools and other public buildings are filled with displaced people left to fend for themselves. On the outskirts of Port Sudan -- the Red Sea city where the army-backed government and UN agencies are now based -- Egeland said he visited a school sheltering more than 3,700 displaced people where mothers were unable to feed their children. "How come next door to the easiest accessible part of Sudan... there is starvation?" he asked. According to the UN, both sides are using hunger as a weapon of war. Authorities routinely impede access with bureaucratic hurdles, while paramilitary fighters have threatened and attacked aid workers. "The ongoing starvation is a man-made tragedy... Each delay, every blocked truck, every authorisation delayed is a death sentence for families who can't wait another day for food, water and shelter," Egeland said. But in spite of all the obstacles, "it is possible to reach all corners of Sudan," he said, calling on donors to increase funding and aid organisations to have more "guts". "Parties to conflicts specialise in scaring us and we specialise in being scared," he said, urging UN and other agencies to "be tougher and demand access".
