Biden announces ceasefire deal between Israel and Hezbollah and takes credit for ending the fighting Biden has been working to stabilize the Middle East before he leaves office Unclear how this deal will affect Israel's war in Gaza By EMILY GOODIN, SENIOR WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENT IN WASHINGTON D.C. Published: 16:20 EST, 26 November 2024 | Updated: 17:06 EST, 26 November 2024 e-mail 28 View comments President Joe Biden confirmed a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah will take effect at 4:00 am local time on Wednesday morning. It came after both sides accepted an agreement brokered by the United States and France . Speaking in the White House Rose Garden, Biden hailed the decision to 'end the violence' after a conflict lasting nearly 14 months. The 82-year-old commander-in-chief said: 'I just spoke with the prime ministers of Israel and Lebanon. I’m pleased to announce that their governments have accepted the United States proposal to end the devastating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.' The ceasefire, mediated by U.S. and French diplomats, starts a 60-day process during which both sides would stop fighting and withdraw from southern Lebanon. Biden added: 'This is designed top be a permanent cessation of hostilities. What is left of Hezbollah and other terrorist organizations will not be allowed. Over the next 60 days, the Lebanese army and state security forces will deploy and take control of their own territory. 'Once again, Hezbollah terrorist infrastructure in southern Lebanon will not be allowed to be rebuilt and, over the next 60 days, Israel will gradually withdraw its remaining forces and civilians.' President Joe Biden confirmed Israel and Lebanon's Hezbollah had agreed to a permanent ceasefire after a year-long conflict The 82-year-old commander-in-chief confirmed in the White House Rose Garden that the deal would be effective from 4:00 am Wednesday morning, and said it was now Hamas' turn to release the hostages Israel did not let up on its bombardment of Lebanon, hitting Hezbollah hard up to the last minute. As Israel's cabinet prepared to vote on the ceasefire its military bombed Beirut 's southern suburbs 20 times in two minutes on Tuesday afternoon, an Israeli military spokesperson said. At least seven people were killed and another 37 injured in Israeli strikes on a four-story building in central Beirut. Turning to the war in Gaza, Biden added: 'Just as the Lebanese people deserve a future of security and prosperity, so do the people of Gaza. 'Now Hamas has a choice to make. Their only way out is to release hostages, including American citizens, which they hold and in the process bring an end to the fighting, which would make possible a surge of humanitarian relief. 'Over the coming days, the United States will make another push with Turkey, Egypt, Qatar, Israel and others to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza. With the hostages released and the end of the war without Hamas in power, that becomes possible.' The Lebanon ceasefire announcement is a win for the Biden administration, which is working to stabilize the Middle East before the president leaves office in January. Biden made his remarks shortly before he was scheduled to leave to Nantucket, where he will spend the Thanksgiving holiday with his family. Ahead of his comments Israel 's security cabinet announced it approved a ceasefire deal in Lebanon. Lebanese officials have said Hezbollah also supports the deal with Israel. It is a major step toward ending the Israel-Hezbollah war that has inflamed tensions across the region and raised fears of an even wider conflict between Israel and Hezbollah's patron, Iran . The U.S. and Biden administration have pushed hard for the deal. It requires Hezbollah to end its armed presence in a broad swath of southern Lebanon, while Israeli troops would return to their side of the border. Biden confirmed that he had spoken to Netanyahu over the phone after the US-backed deal was confirmed Smoke rises from the site of an Israeli airstrike that targeted Beirut on Tuesday A member of Lebanon's emergency services walk at the site of an Israeli airstrike that targeted a building reportedly housing a Hezbollah backed financial institution, in the southern Lebanese city of Sidon 'The length of the ceasefire will depend on what happens in Lebanon,' Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a televised address. 'With the full understanding of the United States, we are preserving full military freedom of action — if Hezbollah breaks the agreement and seeks to arm itself, we will attack.' It's not clear how the ceasefire will affect the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. Hezbollah had long insisted that it would not agree to a ceasefire until the war in Gaza ends, but it dropped that condition. Netanyahu outlined three reasons for the ceasefire - it would allow Israel to focus on Iran, give the military an opportunity to rebuild its stockpiles, and isolate Hamas in Gaza. The 2025 in Türkiye marks a rise of 30 percent from the previous wage to 22,104 Turkish liras (about $628.3), Labor and Social Security Minister announced on Tuesday. "We have determined the net minimum wage to be valid as of January 1, 2025 as 22,104 liras. We have also increased the minimum wage support, provided by the state, for each minimum wage earner from 700 liras to 1,000 liras," he said. Stating that the minimum wage is determined through a social dialogue mechanism, Işıkhan added that they worked to adopt "the most balanced level" by assessing macroeconomic and conjunctural dynamics as well as the suggestions of worker and employer representatives. The 2024 minimum wage in Türkiye was 17,002 Turkish liras (about $483.2). ,Andrew McCutchen is running it back with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2025, and he celebrated the occasion with a great social media post. Warren Buffett reveals brutal rule all parents must follow to keep their family together READ MORE: Warren Buffett says why he won't leave his money to his children By LAUREN ACTON-TAYLOR FOR DAILYMAIL.COM Published: 21:25 GMT, 26 November 2024 | Updated: 21:28 GMT, 26 November 2024 e-mail 5 View comments America's most famous investor has given advice for all parents - regardless of wealth - to let kids read their will. Warren Buffett said parents of either 'modest or staggering wealth' should let their children read their will before they sign it . The father of three, who has amassed a $150 billion personal fortune, advised parents in a letter on Monday that each child should 'understand the logic for your decisions and the responsibilities they will encounter upon your death'. 'If you have any questions or suggestions, listen carefully and adopt those found sensible,' Buffet said. 'You don't want your children asking 'Why?' in respect to testamentary decisions when you are no longer able to respond.' A certified financial planner, Douglas Boneparth, told CNBC that he agreed with Buffett's advice. 'These are tough conversations to have, but they're meaningful and when approached correctly, can strengthen relationships,' he said. 'You want your children to have realistic expectations about their inheritance.' Boneparth, founder and president of Bone Fide Wealth in New York City , added: 'Kids' imagination can run wild with what they think they should be getting.' Billionaire Warren Buffett told parents to let their kids read their will before they sign it He added that parents should be as clear and thorough as possible about who will receive what and why, so that any tensions or hurt feelings can be addressed while you're there to answer. 94-year-old Buffett recalled in his letter that over the years he has witnessed 'many families driven apart after the posthumous dictates of the will left beneficiaries confused and sometimes angry. 'Jealousies, along with actual or imagined slights during childhood, became magnified.' Boneparth added that it's important to explain why certain inheritance may not be split equally and why. For example, one child might be more financially stable and another might need more help. Carolyn McClanahan, founder of Life Planning Partners in Florida, said that parents should also be mindful of their child's financial situation and history when deciding to discuss their inheritance. She said that in rare cases, it might be advisable for parents to be more cautious with a child who has exploited them financially or if a child is irresponsible with jobs or money. Learning that they stand to inherit a large sum could deflate their ambitions and any drive to succeed on their own even further. Buffett also talked about why he will not be leaving his large fortune to his children , but instead giving away 99 percent of the money he's made through his company Berkshire Hathaway. 'These are tough conversations to have, but they're meaningful and when approached correctly, can strengthen relationships,' said certified financial planner Douglas Boneparth Buffett recalled in his letter that over the years he witnessed 'many families driven apart after the posthumous dictates of the will left beneficiaries confused and sometimes angry' This comes after the 94-year-old billionaire announced why he wouldn't be leaving his large fortune to his children (pictured with Buffett), but instead giving away 99 percent of the money he's made through his company Berkshire Hathaway Read More Warren Buffett's surprising move should send shivers down investors' spines Buffett wrote: 'I've never wished to create a dynasty or pursue any plan that extended beyond the children. 'I know the three well and trust them completely. Future generations are another matter. Who can foresee the priorities, intelligence and fidelity of successive generations to deal with the distribution of extraordinary wealth amid what may be a far different philanthropic landscape?' He named three independent trustees to oversee his philanthropy following his three children, anticipating that his wealth may take longer to disburse than his children live. Alongside the appointment of trustees, Buffett also donated an additional $1.1 billion in Berkshire Hathaway stock to his family's four charitable foundations. The identity of the trustees is not known, but he said each is well known to his children. 'They are also somewhat younger than my children,' Buffett wrote. 'But these successors are on the wait list. I hope Susie, Howie and Peter themselves disburse all of my assets.' Buffett has been making yearly donation to the four family foundations since 2006. These are The Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation - which is named after his late wife - The Sherwood Foundation, The Howard G. Buffett Foundation and NoVo Foundation. "The President’s pardon moots Mr. Biden’s pending and yet to occur sentencing and entry of judgment in this case and requires an automatic dismissal of the Indictment with prejudice," wrote Hunter's lawyer Abbe Lowell in the filing, adding that "this Court must dismiss the Indictment against Mr. Biden with prejudice and adjourn all future proceedings in this matter." Special Counsel David Weiss isn't having it . In a Monday response in opposition, Weiss argued that "The defendant’s motion should be denied since there is no binding authority on this Court which requires dismissal." " As a matter of past-practice in this district, courts do not dismiss indictments when pardons are granted ," Weiss wrote - citing cases involving Steve Bannon, Michael Flynn, Joe Arpaio and Ollie North, Above the Law reports. "Instead, it has been the practice of this court that once an Executive Grant of Clemency has been filed on the docket, the docket is marked closed, the disposition entry is updated to reflect the executive grant of clemency, and no further action is taken by the Court." Although Weiss purported not to have seen the pardon itself (which Lowell inexplicably failed to docket), he took particular umbrage at the suggestion that the prosecution was politically motivated, huffing that “The court similarly found [Biden’s] vindictive prosecution claims unmoored from any evidence or even a coherent theory as to vindictiveness.” Judge Mark Scarsi of the Central District of California has taken no action, thus far. But in Delaware, Judge Maryellen Noreika said in a minute order that she intends to terminate the proceedings, and instructing the government to say by tomorrow if it objects to termination by dismissal. Presumably it does, although no objection has hit the docket as of this writing. -Above the Law Hunter pleaded guilty to the tax charges earlier this year, after a Delaware jury found him guilty of lying about his drug use on a background check form used to purchase a firearm. In Weiss' new filing, he writes: "The defendant did not docket the pardon nor has the government seen it. If media reports are accurate, the Government does not challenge that the defendant has been the recipient of an act of mercy. But that does not mean the grand jury’s decision to charge him, based on a finding of probable cause, should be wiped away as if it never occurred. It also does not mean that his charges should be wiped away because the defendant falsely claimed that the charges were the result of some improper motive. No court has agreed with the defendant on these baseless claims, and his request to dismiss the indictment finds no support in the law or the practice of this district."
