ATLANTA (AP) — Deliberations are underway in Atlanta after a year of testimony in the gang and racketeering trial that originally included the rapper Young Thug. Jurors are considering whether to convict Shannon Stillwell and Deamonte Kendrick, who raps as Yak Gotti, on gang, murder, drug and gun charges. The original indictment charged 28 people with conspiring to violate Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. Opening statements in the trial for six of those defendants happened a year ago . Four of them, including Young Thug, pleaded guilty last month. The rapper was freed on probation. Stillwell and Kendrick rejected plea deals after more than a week of negotiations, and their lawyers chose not to present evidence or witnesses. Both seemed to be in good spirits Tuesday morning after closings wrapped the previous night. Kendrick was chatting and laughing with Stillwell and his lawyers before the jury arrived for instructions. The jury started deliberating Tuesday afternoon and was dismissed at 5 p.m. Jurors are expected to resume deliberations Wednesday morning. If they don’t reach a verdict by 3 p.m. Wednesday, the judge will send them home for the Thanksgiving weekend and they will return Monday morning. Kendrick and Stillwell were charged in the 2015 killing of Donovan Thomas Jr., also known as “Big Nut,” in an Atlanta barbershop. Prosecutors painted Stillwell and Kendrick as members of a violent street gang called Young Slime Life, or YSL, co-founded in 2012 by Young Thug, whose real name is Jeffery Williams. During closings on Monday, they pointed to tattoos, song lyrics and social media posts they said proved members, including Stillwell, admitted to killing people in rival gangs. Prosecutors say Thomas was in a rival gang. Stillwell was also charged in the 2022 killing of Shymel Drinks, which prosecutors said was in retaliation for the killing of two YSL associates days earlier. Defense attorneys Doug Weinstein and Max Schardt said the state presented unreliable witnesses, weak evidence and cherry-picked lyrics and social media posts to push a false narrative about Stillwell, Kendrick and the members of YSL. Schardt, Stillwell's attorney, reminded the jury that alleged YSL affiliates said during the trial that they had lied to police. Law enforcement played a “sick game” by promising they would escape long prison sentences if they said what police wanted them to say, Schardt said. He theorized that one of those witnesses could have killed Thomas. The truth is that their clients were just trying to escape poverty through music, Schardt said. “As a whole, we know the struggles that these communities have had,” Schardt said. “A sad, tacit acceptance that it’s either rap, prison or death.” Young Thug’s record label is also known as YSL, an acronym of Young Stoner Life. Kendrick was featured on two popular songs from the label’s compilation album Slime Language 2, “Take It to Trial" and “Slatty," which prosecutors presented as evidence in the trial. Weinstein, Kendrick’s defense attorney, said during closings it was wrong for prosecutors to target the defendants for their music and lyrics. Prosecutor Simone Hylton disagreed, and said surveillance footage and phone evidence supported her case. “They have the audacity to think they can just brag about killing somebody and nobody’s gonna hold them accountable,” Hylton said. The trial had more than its fair share of delays. Jury selection took nearly 10 months , and Stillwell was stabbed last year at the Fulton County jail, which paused trial proceedings. Judge Paige Reese Whitaker took over after Fulton County Superior Court Chief Judge Ural Glanville was removed from the case in July because he had a meeting with prosecutors and a state witness without defense attorneys present. Whitaker often lost patience with prosecutors over moves such as not sharing evidence with defense attorneys, once accusing them of “poor lawyering.” But the trial sped up under her watch. In October, four defendants, including Young Thug , pleaded guilty, with the rapper entering a non-negotiated or “blind” plea, meaning he didn't have a deal worked out with prosecutors. Nine people charged in the indictment, including rapper Gunna , accepted plea deals before the trial began. Charges against 12 others are pending. Prosecutors dropped charges against one defendant after he was convicted of murder in an unrelated case. It's time for Falcons head coach Raheem Morris to bench Kirk Cousins, but he probably won't for a non-football reason. The Cousins experiment is failing in Atlanta. The Falcons (6-7) lost their fourth consecutive game on Sunday, 42-21 to the Vikings (11-2). During Atlanta's losing streak, Cousins is 88-of-141 (62.4 percent) for 1,068 yards, no touchdowns and eight interceptions. It's been outscored by 55 points this season, 37 points more than through 13 games last season when Desmond Ridder was its primary starting quarterback. With the season slipping away, Week 15 against the lowly Raiders would be the perfect time to turn to rookie Michael Penix Jr., who the Falcons unexpectedly selected with the No. 8 overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft a month after signing Cousins in free agency. Atlanta formed a contingency plan in case of a Cousins catastrophe. If you're going to install a fire extinguisher, you can't be afraid to break glass in case of emergency. So, why not use Penix? The Falcons have 180 million reasons to keep their faith in Cousins. He's only one year into a four-year, $180 million contract he signed during the offseason. On Monday, ESPN's Bill Barnwell noted that Atlanta is "on the hook for a $27.5 million guaranteed base salary next season." "If the Falcons bench Cousins, there's a real chance they have to eat money to trade him this offseason," Barnwell added. If NFL teams' last 2024 memories of Cousins are his current zero-touchdown, eight-interception, four-game streak, he shouldn't command much interest on the trade market. And even if Atlanta finds a willing trade partner, Barnwell writes that the Falcons "will have paid him $90 million for one year of work." Atlanta's wallet needs Cousins to be successful. Per Spotrac , the Falcons would incur a $37.5 million dead cap hit in 2025 (or spread between the 2025 and 2026 seasons) by trading the four-time Pro Bowler. Atlanta already projects to have one of the league's worst salary-cap situations entering the offseason, ranking 28th in estimated cap space ($7.6 million). Sir Keir Starmer last week vowed to go on an ambitious housebuilding frenzy — meaning the construction of around 900 a day for half a decade — to give families the “security” of their own home. But politicians and construction bosses warned the worthy aim risks turning into a humiliating flop because the UK has failed to train enough homegrown builders. The building industry says it is in “freefall” and needs another 300,000 workers over the next five years just to keep up with demand. And a woeful failure to train enough brickies, electricians and carpenters has left the UK reliant on foreign migrants at our building sites. Celebrity builder Ian Hodgkinson — who appears on hit TV show DIY SOS — said the target cannot be hit without bringing in more foreign workers. Chris Philp , the shadow home secretary, warned that No 10 must “avoid reaching for high immigration to hit these construction targets”. Reform Party leader Nigel Farage said the housing crisis is caused by sky-high migration and demanded the “madness” of hiring brickies abroad to end. Currently, the UK is only on track to build around one million new homes over five years. Most read in The Sun Earlier this year, the Construction and Industry Training Board estimated that another 250,000 builders were needed in the next four years just to keep up with demand. The Home Builders Federation estimates that an extra 300,000 will be needed to hit the Government’s target. This would include 95,000 bricklayers, 37,000 carpenters and 15,000 plasterers. Yet they also warned Brits on vocational construction courses are not getting the skills they need and often not going into the building trade at all. Building firms are hiring foreign workers instead. This is fuelling sky-high net migration — which stood at 728,000 in the year ending in June. A long list of construction jobs are on the shortage occupation list, meaning bosses can hire from abroad. This includes bricklayers, welders, stonemasons, roofers, carpenters, joiners and other construction workers. Some 12,700 construction workers applied for visas to the UK between January 2021 and September 2024, according to the Home Office . There is no limit to how many “dependent” family members they can bring with them. But an estimated 120,000 foreign builders went home during the pandemic , leaving construction firms desperately short-staffed. The big building companies are only too happy to pay for foreign labour from abroad Mr Hodgkinson said there is no way the 1.5 million target would be hit without more foreign workers. He said: “Training new workers takes time — years, not months. “Meanwhile, the clock is ticking on housing targets, and construction companies are struggling to keep up with demand. The maths simply doesn’t add up: fewer workers, more houses, and no realistic solution to bridge the gap.” Britain is also facing a shortage of building supplies, he warned. Building 1.5 million homes will mean getting around six billion bricks, 20 million tons of concrete and five million tons of timber. Writing in The Sun on Sunday, Mr Farage says hiring foreign workers will backfire because it fuels migration and makes it harder for Brits to find a home. He says: “The big building companies are only too happy to pay for foreign labour from abroad. Not the answer “The reason is very simple indeed. They are just cheaper. But that means the immigration numbers go up, which means an even higher demand for housing. This takes us straight back to square one. This madness has got to end.” Tory frontbencher Mr Philp also warned immigration is not the answer. If he has to rip up the planning rules he says that he will. The country desperately needs more houses as there is not only a shortage but the problem of affordability. More houses in theory should mean cheaper houses. But how on earth do you get to build them all? What he did not say — and what so few in our public life dare to mention — is the real reason behind this crisis. It is of course mass immigration — on a scale we have never seen before in this country. We are living through a population explosion which means we have to build one new home every two minutes just to keep up. It is a truly frightening statistic. To achieve these targets we are going to need tens of thousands more construction workers on site up and down the country. And this is where another problem begins. The big building companies are only too happy to pay for labour from abroad. The reason is very simple indeed. They are just cheaper. But that means immigration numbers go up. And that means an even higher demand for housing. This takes us straight back to square one. This madness has got to end. It is time our education system stopped pushing so many teenagers on to university to study social sciences. In most cases these students leave with large debts around their neck and with no advancement in the work marketplace. So I want to encourage our young people to become plumbers, carpenters and bricklayers. They will earn a far better living with a trade and a skill set for their future. There are also vast numbers of young people on disability benefits — in many cases, through conditions such as depression. To begin, we ought to try to inspire these young people so that they can do so much better for themselves and in their lives. Therefore they would be much happier and fulfilled. British workers need to fill this new huge demand placed on our construction industry. And if that means that the big building companies have to pay higher salaries and therefore make smaller profits then overall this has to be a good thing — not a bad thing. Equally there are those living on disability benefits that are using this support as a lifestyle choice. If necessary we will have to force these people back to work. And where better could they be used than on construction sites earning decent money? The population explosion can and must be stopped. We have to start saying British jobs for British workers — and actually mean it.
