Why Legislators Want More Options Than Aye, No or Not VotingCan Trump end birthright citizenship? The 14th amendment upheld in the US constitution since 1868By MICHAEL R. SISAK and JENNIFER PELTZ NEW YORK (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump’s lawyers urged a judge again Friday to throw out his hush money conviction, balking at the prosecution’s suggestion of preserving the verdict by treating the case the way some courts do when a defendant dies. They called the idea “absurd.” Related Articles National Politics | Trump wants to turn the clock on daylight saving time National Politics | Ruling by a conservative Supreme Court could help blue states resist Trump policies National Politics | A nonprofit leader, a social worker: Here are the stories of the people on Biden’s clemency list National Politics | Nancy Pelosi hospitalized after she ‘sustained an injury’ on official trip to Luxembourg National Politics | Veteran Daniel Penny, acquitted in NYC subway chokehold, will join Trump’s suite at football game The Manhattan district attorney’s office is asking Judge Juan M. Merchan to “pretend as if one of the assassination attempts against President Trump had been successful,” Trump’s lawyers wrote in a blistering 23-page response. In court papers made public Tuesday, District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office proposed an array of options for keeping the historic conviction on the books after Trump’s lawyers filed paperwork earlier this month asking for the case to be dismissed. They include freezing the case until Trump leaves office in 2029, agreeing that any future sentence won’t include jail time, or closing the case by noting he was convicted but that he wasn’t sentenced and his appeal wasn’t resolved because of presidential immunity. Trump lawyers Todd Blanche and Emil Bove reiterated Friday their position that the only acceptable option is overturning his conviction and dismissing his indictment, writing that anything less will interfere with the transition process and his ability to lead the country. The Manhattan district attorney’s office declined comment. It’s unclear how soon Merchan will decide. He could grant Trump’s request for dismissal, go with one of the prosecution’s suggestions, wait until a federal appeals court rules on Trump’s parallel effort to get the case moved out of state court, or choose some other option. In their response Friday, Blanche and Bove ripped each of the prosecution’s suggestions. Halting the case until Trump leaves office would force the incoming president to govern while facing the “ongoing threat” that he’ll be sentenced to imprisonment, fines or other punishment as soon as his term ends, Blanche and Bove wrote. Trump, a Republican, takes office Jan. 20. “To be clear, President Trump will never deviate from the public interest in response to these thuggish tactics,” the defense lawyers wrote. “However, the threat itself is unconstitutional.” The prosecution’s suggestion that Merchan could mitigate those concerns by promising not to sentence Trump to jail time on presidential immunity grounds is also a non-starter, Blanche and Bove wrote. The immunity statute requires dropping the case, not merely limiting sentencing options, they argued. Blanche and Bove, both of whom Trump has tabbed for high-ranking Justice Department positions, expressed outrage at the prosecution’s novel suggestion that Merchan borrow from Alabama and other states and treat the case as if Trump had died. Blanche and Bove accused prosecutors of ignoring New York precedent and attempting to “fabricate” a solution “based on an extremely troubling and irresponsible analogy between President Trump” who survived assassination attempts in Pennsylvania in July and Florida in September “and a hypothetical dead defendant.” Such an option normally comes into play when a defendant dies after being convicted but before appeals are exhausted. It is unclear whether it is viable under New York law, but prosecutors suggested that Merchan could innovate in what’s already a unique case. “This remedy would prevent defendant from being burdened during his presidency by an ongoing criminal proceeding,” prosecutors wrote in their filing this week. But at the same time, it wouldn’t “precipitously discard” the “meaningful fact that defendant was indicted and found guilty by a jury of his peers.” Prosecutors acknowledged that “presidential immunity requires accommodation” during Trump’s impending return to the White House but argued that his election to a second term should not upend the jury’s verdict, which came when he was out of office. Longstanding Justice Department policy says sitting presidents cannot face criminal prosecution . Other world leaders don’t enjoy the same protection. For example, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is on trial on corruption charges even as he leads that nation’s wars in Lebanon and Gaza . Trump has been fighting for months to reverse his May 30 conviction on 34 counts of falsifying business records . Prosecutors said he fudged the documents to conceal a $130,000 payment to porn actor Stormy Daniels to suppress her claim that they had sex a decade earlier, which Trump denies. In their filing Friday, Trump’s lawyers citing a social media post in which Sen. John Fetterman used profane language to criticize Trump’s hush money prosecution. The Pennsylvania Democrat suggested that Trump deserved a pardon, comparing his case to that of President Joe Biden’s pardoned son Hunter Biden, who had been convicted of tax and gun charges . “Weaponizing the judiciary for blatant, partisan gain diminishes the collective faith in our institutions and sows further division,” Fetterman wrote Wednesday on Truth Social. Trump’s hush money conviction was in state court, meaning a presidential pardon — issued by Biden or himself when he takes office — would not apply to the case. Presidential pardons only apply to federal crimes. Since the election, special counsel Jack Smith has ended his two federal cases , which pertained to Trump’s efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss and allegations that he hoarded classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate. A separate state election interference case in Fulton County, Georgia, is largely on hold. Trump denies wrongdoing in all. Trump had been scheduled for sentencing in the hush money case in late November. But following Trump’s Nov. 5 election victory, Merchan halted proceedings and indefinitely postponed the former and future president’s sentencing so the defense and prosecution could weigh in on the future of the case. Merchan also delayed a decision on Trump’s prior bid to dismiss the case on immunity grounds. A dismissal would erase Trump’s conviction, sparing him the cloud of a criminal record and possible prison sentence. Trump is the first former president to be convicted of a crime and the first convicted criminal to be elected to the office.Giants could target raw quarterback prospect with unlimited upside in 2025
President-elect Donald Trump said on Saturday that the United States should avoid engaging militarily in Syria amid an Opposition offensive that has reached the capital’s suburbs, declaring in a social media post, “THIS IS NOT OUR FIGHT.” Trump’s first extensive comments on the dramatic rebel push came while he was in Paris for the reopening of the Notre Dame Cathedral. He argued that Syrian President Bashar Assad did not deserve U.S. support to stay in power. Assad’s Government has been propped up by the Russian and Iranian military, along with Hezbollah and other Iranian-allied militias, in a now 13-year-old war against Opposition groups seeking his overthrow. The war, which began as a mostly peaceful uprising in 2011 against the Assad family’s rule, has killed a half-million people, fractured Syria and drawn in a more than a half-dozen foreign militaries and militias. The insurgents are led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, which the United States has designated as a terrorist group and says has links to al-Qaida, although the group has since broken ties with al-Qaida.” The insurgents have met little resistance so far from the Syrian Army. Tottenham head coach Ange Postecoglou accused Premier League referees of refusing to make important decisions after Moises Caicedo avoided a red card in their 4-3 defeat to Chelsea . Caicedo was fortunate to escape punishment after catching Pape Matar Sarr with his studs in a 50-50 challenge in the first half. Referee Anthony Taylor waved play on and did not even brandish a yellow card for the Ecuadorian. VAR checked the incident for a potential red card, but it was deemed not to be a use of 'excessive force', which is required for the video assistance system to overturn the on-field decision. When asked about the controversy after the game, the Australian claimed officials are refusing to act decisively on big decisions and are leaving it to VAR officials to decide matches. "That's what is happening in the game now, referees are leaving it to other powers that be to make decisions," Postecoglou said. "There were a couple [of decisions] that didn't go our way but there's nothing we can do about that. It's out of our control." He added: "I've said it before... but I don't think technology has helped our game. Instead of one person being in control, it feels like no one is in control.” The Premier League 's Match Centre released a statement to explain why Caicedo was not dismissed for the lunge. It read: "VAR checked for a potential red card following a challenge by Caicedo on Sarr and confirmed the referee’s call of no serious foul play." Upon seeing the replay, Sky Sports co-commentator Jamie Carragher was adamant that the £115million star should have been dismissed. "I mean that is unbelievable. I don't like seeing people sent off, but I was certain that was going to be a red card," Carragher said. "They've got away with a huge one there Chelsea ." To make matters worse for Spurs, Caicedo played a part in the third goal and generally had a major influence on Chelsea 's comeback in the second half. Spurs raced into an early two-goal lead through Dominic Solanke and Dejan Kulusevski before Jadon Sancho pulled one back for the Blues. The midfielder was then felled in the box by Yves Bissouma and Cole Palmer dispatched the penalty to make it 2-2, before Enzo Fernandez gave Chelsea the lead. Palmer scored a brilliant panenka late on to make it 4-2 after Sarr brought him down, before Son Heung-min added a consolation in stoppage time.Valley Sparkles, ABC15 and Axios Guide to Best Holiday Light Displays in Salt Lake Area
Former B.C. NDP MLA Dan Coulter dies at 49 after 'serious medical emergency'I hate Bluetooth in Windows . Add it to the list of gripes I have, but no matter how many times I go through the process of pairing and re-pairing different controllers on my PC, I always seem to run into issues with dropped connections and pairing failures when I go to play games with a controller on my PC. This $20 accessory solves that issue. I’m talking about the . It’s a little $20 dongle that I’ve used for years at this point, and it’s become such a staple of my PC setup that I rarely even think about it. If you’re looking to pad the stocking of a PC gamer in your life, it’s one of the most inexpensive accessories that can benefit nearly any PC gamer. The Bluetooth battle At a high level, the Wireless USB Adapter 2 is just a Bluetooth adapter. You plug it into your PC, hold down a tiny button until the light starts blinking rapidly, and pair your controller of choice, be it from Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, or even 8BitDo itself. I’ve gone through the pairing process literally hundreds of times with the adapter, and I’ve never once run into an issue. I can’t say the same with Bluetooth in Windows. Once a controller is paired, it’ll automatically reconnect to the adapter whenever you turn on the controller, giving off a little rumble to let you know it has paired successfully. I mainly use an Xbox Series X controller for PC gaming, but I’ll occasionally pop over to the DualSense for Sony’s first-party games or an for retro games. All of them work flawlessly. You’d have a hard time finding a PC these days that doesn’t support Bluetooth, and that prevalence should make an accessory like the Wireless USB Adapter 2 obsolete. But it doesn’t. Although basically any PC has Bluetooth connectivity, the quality of the connection varies wildly. Some PCs combine Bluetooth and Wi-Fi into a single chip, others have separate chips, and if you built your own PC , you might not have Wi-Fi or Bluetooth at all depending on your motherboard. The bigger issue is range, however, which is why I sought out the Wireless USB Adapter 2 in the first place. This is dependent on your PC, but for me, I constantly experienced missed inputs and lagging performance when using my PC’s built-in Bluetooth, particularly if I leaned my chair back while playing. Bluetooth has a very limited range, but I’ve never had an issue with connectivity with the USB Wireless Adapter 2. Broad support I use three main controllers on a Windows PC, and the Wireless USB Adapter 2 supports all of them. But it goes far beyond just what I use the adapter for. You can connect nearly any controller to nearly any modern system, and with the full features of the controller intact. As for what you can plug the Wireless USB Adapter 2 into, it supports Windows, macOS, Android, SteamOS, Switch, and Raspberry Pi. Short of the Xbox and PlayStation, it works with nearly any device you’d want to play games on. Controller support is even better. Of course, any 8Bitdo arcade stick or controller works, as do Xbox controllers from the Xbox One or Xbox Series X. Beyond that, you can pair a PlayStation controller from the PS3 up to the PS5, as well as the Switch Pro, Joy-Cons, Wii U Pro, and Wiimote controllers. With Switch controllers, the adapter supports 6-axis motion controls, and you get rumble support on Switch, Xbox, and PlayStation controllers. That doesn’t cover any controller, but it’s close. Basically any controller that supports Bluetooth will pair up without issues, and for most modern controllers, you can still access all of their features — assuming they work with the game you’re playing in the first place. Going beyond Bluetooth If broad support and hassle-free pairing isn’t enough, the Wireless USB Adapter 2 offers more. If you’re using one of the big three controllers — Switch Pro, PS4/PS5, or Xbox Series/One controller — you can use 8BitDo’s Ultimate software. It works with 8BitDo’s own controllers, too, though that shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. The Ultimate software is extremely powerful, offering a level of customization that you normally only find with the Xbox Elite Series 2 controller . It allows you to customize nearly every aspect of the controller, from button mappings to stick dead zones, and you can store all of the customization in a profile that’s easy to recall later. My personal use case for the Ultimate software is pretty simple. I have the vibration, trigger sensitivity, and joystick dead zones tuned for each of the three controllers I mainly use, and I swap between them as needed. You can go much deeper with the software if you want, though. You can swap the sticks or triggers, for example, and you can remap the face buttons on something like a Switch Pro controller to line up with the Xbox/PlayStation layout. Beyond full remapping support, you can program macros, including adjustable timing and support for eight-way inputs on the D-pad, which is very useful for pulling off tricky combos in fighting games. And with all of these settings, you can save them in a profile to easily swap over to if you don’t want to leave your controller with a wonky layout all of the time. The Wireless USB Adapter 2 is a simple accessory that’s surprisingly powerful. It gets around the issues with Bluetooth in Windows, and it makes your controller more powerful through the Ultimate software. If you have a PC gamer in your life, you don’t need to take out a second mortgage buying more PC hardware or play the guessing game with the next title they want to play — the Wireless USB Adapter 2 is a perfect stocking stuffer that nearly any PC gamer will appreciate.
Grading the Giants’ 30-7 loss to the Buccaneers at MetLife Stadium on Sunday. Offense Forget about any of the final stats, which look bad but not embarrassing. This was abominable. Three first downs and 45 total yards in the first half. Everyone knew Todd Bowles would blitz like crazy — everyone but the offensive line, apparently. Tommy DeVito (21 of 31, 189 yards) was overwhelmed in the first half. He was sacked four times in the game. Rookie Tyrone Tracy (9-42) had another costly fumble — it is becoming a problem. Malik Nabers (6-64) was not targeted in the first half, had some drops and is growing frustrated . No catches (only two targets) for Darius Slayton. C John Michael Schmitz was obliterated by Vita Vea on a second-quarter sack. LT Jermaine Eluemunor (quad) went out early. Daniel Jones clearly wasn’t the only problem, was he? Grade: F Defense Oh, there goes another missed tackle by the Gang That Couldn’t Wrap Up. High school teams get ballcarriers to the ground better than this. Baker Mayfield (24 of 30, 294 yards) ran for a TD and then mocked the Giants with DeVito’s signature hand gesture. To the victors go the taunting. Bucky Irving (12-87) led a 156-yard rushing attack. A missed tackle by Bobby Okereke set up the first Bucs TD. Okereke did force a fumble on Sean Tucker that forced Tampa to settle for a field goal. Tyler Nubin had a nice pass breakup on Mike Evans in the first quarter but the rookie safety whiffed several times. An illegal-contact penalty on Deonte Banks led to a Bucs TD. Banks seemed content to allow receivers to catch the ball in front of him and then try to make the tackle. Adoree’ Jackson blatantly dragged down Evans for a 23-yard pass interference penalty. D.J. Davidson had a fumble recovery. Grade: F Special Teams Jamie Gillan’s first punt put the Bucs back on their 16-yard line. His next punt sailed 53 yards and out of bounds on the Tampa 18. He put three down inside the 20. Good kickoff coverage to pin the Bucs back on their 2-yard line. No field goal attempts for the Giants. Grade: B Coaching If we hear “We had a good week of practice’’ one more time we’re going to have to throw something against the wall. Whatever Brian Daboll is selling, his players aren’t buying — and it is getting worse. It smacked of desperation to see Daboll go for it on fourth-and-1 on the Giants 37 late in the first quarter. As for defensive coordinator Shane Bowen, what exactly is his unit good at doing? Tackling is terrible, pass rush is suspect and stopping the run is optional. Grade: F
Kolkata, Dec 29 (PTI) The Engineering Export Promotion Council (EEPC), India on Sunday proposed the introduction of a “faceless” GST audit system to boost ease of doing business in the country. The apex engineering exports promotion body’s proposal comes following the successful implementation of ‘faceless assessment’ by the Income Tax department. “The faceless GST audit system, by using technology and ensuring anonymity, will reduce compliance costs. A faceless system will streamline procedures allowing MSMEs to focus on growth and innovation,” said Pankaj Chadha, chairman of EEPC India. The proposal is a part of EEPC India’s Budget 2025 recommendation. By introducing a “faceless” GST audit system, India can further improve its ranking in the Ease of Doing Business index, making it a more attractive destination for foreign investors, it said. It also proposed that Reverse Charge Mechanism (RCM) related liabilities should be eligible for the ‘Amnesty Scheme’ to address challenges faced by exporters, who may be unaware of foreign bank charges and foreign business services. Quebec’s environment minister is urging people to switch to electric vehicles by 2035, citing challenges they’ll face finding gas once Quebec’s draft regulation to ban the sale of gas-powered cars comes in. While gas vehicles can still be driven and used cars can still be sold, the question remains: Will Quebec be ready to switch to electric cars by 2035? “They’ll find that’s gonna be a bit difficult because the infrastructures for EVs is still in its infancy. That is battery technology could vastly improve, the infrastructure needs to be built to recharge vehicles. And in a cold climate like in Canada for example, we’re finding out that there are some limitations to electric vehicles, that is the range of batteries is much lower in cold weather and that has to be factored as well,” explained Patrick De Haan, the head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. Jesse Caron, an automotive expert with CAA-Québec added, “Might sound a little bit premature to us at CAA Quebec. We think that there might be some issues with harmonizing the fleets with the rest of Canada and the rest of North America. Especially as the mandate here would be that every vehicle should be purely electric, so battery electric vehicles. Plug-in electric hybrids would not be allowed here and it would be elsewhere in America.” Quebec has experienced an unprecedented increase in the sales of EVs and plug-in hybrids, accounting for approximately 17 per cent of total car sales in 2024, according to CAA Quebec. It is uncertain whether this rise will be sustained, as subsidies for electric vehicles are scheduled to decrease twice over the next two years and will be completely dropped by 2027. “I don’t think it’s realistic just for someone who come from a rural environment. I think urban, yes, but in rural environments and long distances to drive, I think you need hybrid vehicles at best,” said Dan, a Montrealer CityNEws spoke with. “I think you will need a variety of cars. I think it would be good to have electric cars, but totally electric, I don’t think it’s realistic.” Another Montrealer bought an EV car just a week ago, taking advantage of federal, provincial, and manufacturer rebates. “Being a young adult still student, I don’t think it would have been the most economic for me, but with the three rebates for sure that’s why I went and got the car before the end of the year. I wouldn’t have if not, for sure.”Drones, planes or UFOs? Americans abuzz over mysterious New Jersey sightings

CHATHAM, N.J. (AP) — That buzzing coming out of New Jersey? It’s unclear if it’s drones or something else, but for sure the nighttime sightings are producing tons of talk, a raft of conspiracy theories and craned necks looking skyward. Cropping up on local news and social media sites around Thanksgiving, reported over New Jersey has reached incredible heights. This week seems to have begun a new, higher-profile chapter: (but so far not getting) explanations from federal and state authorities about what’s behind them. Gov. Phil Murphy asking for answers. New Jersey’s new senator, Andy Kim, spent Thursday night on a drone hunt in rural northern New Jersey, and posted about it on X. But perhaps the most fantastic development is the dizzying proliferation of conspiracies — none of which has been confirmed or suggested by federal and state officials who say they’re looking into what’s happening. It has become shorthand to refer to the flying machines as drones, but there are questions about whether what people are seeing are unmanned aircraft or something else. Some theorize the drones came from an Iranian mothership. Others think they are the Secret Service making sure President-elect Donald Trump’s Bedminster property is secure. Others worry about China. The deep state. And on. In the face of uncertainty, people have done what they do in 2024: Create a social media group. The Facebook page, , has nearly 44,000 members, up from 39,000 late Thursday. People are posting their photo and video sightings, and the online commenters take it from there. One video shows a whitish light flying in a darkened sky, and one commenter concludes it’s otherworldly. “Straight up orbs,” the person says. Others weigh in to say it’s a plane or maybe a satellite. Another group called for hunting the drones literally, shooting them down like turkeys. (Do not shoot at anything in the sky, experts warn.) Trisha Bushey, 48, of Lebanon Township, New Jersey, lives near Round Valley Reservoir where there have been numerous sightings. She said she first posted photos online last month wondering what the objects were and became convinced they were drones when she saw how they moved and when her son showed her on a flight tracking site that no planes were around. Now she’s glued to the Mystery Drones page, she said. “I find myself — instead of Christmas shopping or cleaning my house — checking it,” she said. She doesn’t buy what the governor said, that Murphy told Biden on Friday that residents need answers. The federal Homeland Security Department and FBI also said in a joint statement they have no evidence that the sightings pose “a national security or public safety threat or have a foreign nexus.” “How can you say it’s not posing a threat if you don’t know what it is?” she said. “I think that’s why so many people are uneasy.” Then there’s the notion that people could misunderstand what they’re seeing. William Austin is the president of Warren County Community College, which has a drone technology degree program, and is coincidentally located in one of the sighting hotspots. Austin says he has looked at videos of purported drones and that airplanes are being misidentified as drones. He cited an optical effect called parallax, which is the apparent shift of an object when viewed from different perspectives. Austin encouraged people to download flight and drone tracker apps so they can better understand what they’re looking at. Nonetheless, people continue to come up with their own theories. “It represents the United States of America in 2024,” Austin said. “We’ve lost trust in our institutions, and we need it.” Federal officials echo Austin’s view that many of the sightings are piloted aircraft such as planes and helicopters being mistaken for drones, according to lawmakers and Murphy. That’s not really convincing for many, though, who are homing in on the sightings beyond just New Jersey and the East Coast, where others have reported seeing the objects. For Seph Divine, 34, another member of the drone hunting group who lives in Eugene, Oregon, it feels as if it’s up to citizen sleuths to solve the mystery. He said he tries to be a voice of reason, encouraging people to fact check their information, while also asking probing questions. “My main goal is I don’t want people to be caught up in the hysteria and I also want people to not just ignore it at the same time,” he said. “Whether or not it’s foreign military or some secret access program or something otherworldly, whatever it is, all I’m saying is it’s alarming that this is happening so suddenly and so consistently for hours at a time,” he added.Coleen Rooney has an emotional reunion with her sons and admits 'my boys have been proud of their dad for so long, it's my turn now' after losing out on I'm A Celebrity crown By LAURA PARKIN FOR MAILONLINE Published: 23:01 GMT, 8 December 2024 | Updated: 23:15 GMT, 8 December 2024 e-mail 3 View comments Coleen Rooney had an emotional reunion with her sons after she lost out on the I'm A Celebrity ...
