Foundational identity: A fundamental human rightDavao City—The Southern Philippines Development Authority (SPDA) has partnered with San Miguel Corp. (SMC) to put up a poultry farm in Davao del Sur, the Philippine Information Agency said. In its regular news dispatch, the PIA said the two parties inaugurated the project in Barangay Labon, Municipality of Sulop, Davao del Sur. The poultry farm consists of two poultry houses which can accommodate 40,000 heads of broiler chicken per house. The project aims to provide an adequate supply of chicken in Mindanao and to increase broiler chicken production in Davao Region that would help stabilize the prices of chicken in the market, the SPDA said. The agreement would have the SPDA undertake the production side while San Miguel, a known provider of poultry an dairy meat and other products would buy the poultry produced at the farm. The SPDA said San Miguel has its own poultry farm in the province to meet its own corporate production targets. Its poultry farm in Hagonoy town is the largest poultry production site in the country. “There was a feasibility study before that there was a shortage of chicken in Mindanao, that is why even San Miguel Corp. put up a big poultry farm here in Davao del Sur. And SPDA was also in the past years in the poultry business,” said SPDA Administrator and Chief Executive Officer Abdulghani Gerry Salapuddin. He said San Miguel will supply the poultry farm project with the chicks, the technology including technical support. “And then all the products that we produce they buy from us. So, they’d be the one to market and distribute it in Mindanao.” SPDA has allocated P54 million for the first phase of the project and said it would allocate another P98 million for the expansion. Salapuddin said the project should have taken off two years ago but the initial plan to establish it in Zamboanga City did not materialize due to the disagreement with the land owners. “I told our executive committee to look for an alternative site outside Zamboanga City which is near the city center but far from the populated area and finally Mr. Cris Dagala, project manager found this lot,” Salapuddin said. Senator Ronald dela Rosa, who was the guest of honor when the project was inaugurated last month, has asked SPDA to ensure that local residents are employed in the farm. “With this project there is a big chance that people those that are idle could gain employment given the right training, the right skills and improvement required for the job.” He said Sulop town used to have peace and order problems and that the project could ease the plight of residents as he also assured the SPDA of his support to any of its development initiatives to help the local government. The move represents a massive expansion for the supercomputer called Colossus, which currently has 100,000 GPUs to train xAI's chatbot called Grok. As part of the expansion, Nvidia, which supplies the GPUs, and Dell and Super Micro, which have assembled the server racks for the computer, will establish operations in Memphis, the chamber said in a statement. Colossus is a critical component of advancing Musk's AI efforts, as the billionaire has deepened his rivalry against OpenAI and its chief executive Sam Altman. Last month, Musk expanded his lawsuit against the ChatGPT-maker, arguing that OpenAI and Microsoft illegally sought to monopolise the AI market. The plan to expand the xAI supercomputer tenfold will likely raise environmental concerns, as activists and lawmakers have scrutinized the growing number of data centers for their vast energy consumption. In August, the Southern Environmental Law Center called on local Tennessee officials to verify whether xAI was using gas turbines to help power its supercomputer without the required air permits. WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – An online spat between factions of Donald Trump's supporters over immigration and the tech industry has thrown internal divisions in his political movement into public display, previewing the fissures and contradictory views his coalition could bring to the White House. The rift laid bare the tensions between the newest flank of Trump's movement — wealthy members of the tech world including billionaire Elon Musk and fellow entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy and their call for more highly skilled workers in their industry — and people in Trump's Make America Great Again base who championed his hardline immigration policies. Recommended Videos The debate touched off this week when Laura Loomer , a right-wing provocateur with a history of racist and conspiratorial comments, criticized Trump’s selection of Sriram Krishnan as an adviser on artificial intelligence policy in his coming administration. Krishnan favors the ability to bring more skilled immigrants into the U.S. Loomer declared the stance to be “not America First policy” and said the tech executives who have aligned themselves with Trump were doing so to enrich themselves. Much of the debate played out on the social media network X, which Musk owns. Loomer's comments sparked a back-and-forth with venture capitalist and former PayPal executive David Sacks , whom Trump has tapped to be the “White House A.I. & Crypto Czar." Musk and Ramaswamy, whom Trump has tasked with finding ways to cut the federal government , weighed in, defending the tech industry's need to bring in foreign workers. It bloomed into a larger debate with more figures from the hard-right weighing in about the need to hire U.S. workers, whether values in American culture can produce the best engineers, free speech on the internet, the newfound influence tech figures have in Trump's world and what his political movement stands for. Trump has not yet weighed in on the rift, and his presidential transition team did not respond to a message seeking comment. Musk, the world's richest man who has grown remarkably close to the president-elect , was a central figure in the debate, not only for his stature in Trump's movement but his stance on the tech industry's hiring of foreign workers. Technology companies say H-1B visas for skilled workers, used by software engineers and others in the tech industry, are critical for hard-to-fill positions. But critics have said they undercut U.S. citizens who could take those jobs. Some on the right have called for the program to be eliminated, not expanded. Born in South Africa, Musk was once on an a H-1B visa himself and defended the industry's need to bring in foreign workers. “There is a permanent shortage of excellent engineering talent," he said in a post. “It is the fundamental limiting factor in Silicon Valley.” Trump's own positions over the years have reflected the divide in his movement. His tough immigration policies, including his pledge for a mass deportation, were central to his winning presidential campaign. He has focused on immigrants who come into the U.S. illegally but he has also sought curbs on legal immigration , including family-based visas. As a presidential candidate in 2016, Trump called the H-1B visa program “very bad” and “unfair” for U.S. workers. After he became president, Trump in 2017 issued a “Buy American and Hire American” executive order , which directed Cabinet members to suggest changes to ensure H-1B visas were awarded to the highest-paid or most-skilled applicants to protect American workers. Trump's businesses, however, have hired foreign workers, including waiters and cooks at his Mar-a-Lago club , and his social media company behind his Truth Social app has used the the H-1B program for highly skilled workers. During his 2024 campaign for president, as he made immigration his signature issue, Trump said immigrants in the country illegally are “poisoning the blood of our country" and promised to carry out the largest deportation operation in U.S. history. But in a sharp departure from his usual alarmist message around immigration generally, Trump told a podcast this year that he wants to give automatic green cards to foreign students who graduate from U.S. colleges. “I think you should get automatically, as part of your diploma, a green card to be able to stay in this country," he told the “All-In" podcast with people from the venture capital and technology world. Elliot Perry is behind 250 veteran smiles this holiday season. The 13-year-old spent the day Friday dropping off holiday stockings for veterans across the state. This is the third year Elliot Perry and the Elliot Perry Foundation have collected donations for veterans around the holidays. Each year, the effort grows bigger and bigger. Harbor Care, the largest veterans services nonprofit organization in the state, was one of Elliot's stops Friday. The organization helps combat homelessness, offers health care services and lends a hand to help service members get back on their feet. "We're glad this place is here," Air Force veteran Richard McGonagle said. The bags being delivered were stuffed with snacks, toiletries and a warm hat as we head into the winter months. "Got a nice warm hat, some fudge-striped cookies," Army veteran Wayne Lajewski said. Elliot and his family planned five stops across the state Friday to drop off 125 stockings for veterans. That's on top of the 125 they have already delivered in Texas. The veterans who call Buckingham Place home said they are grateful to be thought of this time of year. "For me, it feels pretty good because all of my family has moved down south. So, there is really nobody around here from my family," McGonagle said. "Lifts us all up, especially that some of the veterans are in different places emotionally around the holidays, so it really makes them feel pretty good," U.S. Coast Guard veteran Tom Ryan said. "There are times where you are overwhelmed that people remember you and give thanks to you and I am just really grateful," Lajewski said. For Elliot, helping others, especially those who have stepped up to serve the nation, is the best gift you can get. "I've always had huge support, and I want to give big support to veterans and while it's great that they're honored one day, I really think that they should be honored every day," Elliot said.
The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi said borders are critical gateways that determine a nation’s capacity to protect its citizens, safeguard its economy, and foster security. Adeniyi spoke at the 18th Africa Security Watch Conference in Doha, Qatar. Represented by the National Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Customs Abdullahi Maiwada, he shared a comprehensive account of the Service’s achievements in balancing security enforcement with trade facilitation. In his keynote address titled “Protecting National Security Through Effective Border Control: The Nigeria Customs Example,” Adeniyi emphasised the vital role of border management in national security, describing borders as more than just geographical boundaries. According to him, borders are critical gateways that determine a nation’s capacity to protect its citizens, safeguard its economy, and foster security. The CGC highlighted how the NCS, empowered by the Nigeria Customs Act 2023, has successfully redefined its operational priorities to address emerging threats, enhance efficiency, and improve collaboration. CGC Adeniyi noted that the Nigeria Customs Act 2023 represents a legislative milestone that has repositioned the NCS to thrive in a dynamic environment. He also reflected on the significant strides made in 2024, which marked a year of unparalleled achievements for the Service, adding “Under my leadership, the NCS generated a record-breaking ₦5.1 trillion in revenue, a feat that underscores the agency’s innovative use of technology and improved compliance frameworks.” “We have equally strengthened partnerships with both domestic and international stakeholders. The CGC noted that this achievement was not merely about numbers but also reflected the efficiency and resilience of the Customs workforce.” He said. CGC Adeniyi, however, described how, through intelligence-led operations, the NCS has intercepted several arms shipments, including 844 rifles and 112,500 rounds of live ammunition in Onne Seaport. “These efforts have significantly disrupted the proliferation of small arms and light weapons, which remain a persistent threat to national security. Additionally, the NCS’s collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) led to so many interceptions of illicit drugs.” CGC Adeniyi said. He also brought attention to the Service’s role in combating wildlife trafficking, detailing how officers intercepted 4,200 kilograms of pangolin scales and ivory, underscoring the NCS’s dedication to biodiversity conservation and international compliance. In the area of fighting against economic saboteurs who venture into smuggling and diversion of petroleum products, CGC Adeniyi discussed the impact of Operation Whirlwind and highlighted how the Service, in collaboration with the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), intercepted over 695,000 litres of smuggled Premium Motor Spirit (PMS). The CGC revealed that the use of geospatial technologies, such as satellite feeds and geo-mapping, has enhanced the Service’s surveillance and enforcement capabilities, ensuring that these operations are not only effective but sustainable.
