Not a few residents of Ibadan- the state capital were stunned recently when they observed sudden erection of massive structures believed to be private business complexes and shopping malls within the premises of the Oyo State Library Board in which the the defunct Western Region government built public libraries and other facilities being put into premium use by students, researchers, tourists among others until now. In a statement issued on Sunday and made available to the journalists in Ibadan by its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, Oyo APC also raised the alarm over another alleged ridiculous sale of the entire modern motor park facility at Wema Area on New Ife Road, Ibadan built by the administration of late Senator Abiola Ajimobi. Sources have it that the Park has been sold to a pastor who presides over a popular church situated very close to it. “It is a sad reality that the buildings which used to serve as public libraries and archive in Dugbe axis of Ibadan have now paved the way for the development of commercial and business structures and the implication of this is that education and research development have been relegated to the background in the state by the same administration which has refused to address the issue of poor reading culture among young students. “Without mincing words, the word ‘library’ is now strange to many students in public primary and secondary schools in Oyo state because a government does not care to build such facility or fix the existing ones which require good attention. How can a government wake up one day and convert public reading facilities and archives into lock up shops in the name of making money and thereby subject the entire society into the danger of illiteracy and ignorance? “It has also got to that stage when silence is no more golden as all well meaning individuals and stakeholders should begin to ask Gov. Makinde questions on why he keeps selling off public heritage and properties which his government inherited from previous administrations. In the same vein, we have had cases of fraudulent lease or concession of public facilities to proxies as it happened to OYSADEP Guest House in Saki and Agbowo Shopping Complex in Ibadan. “Sad enough, the ignoble activities of the governor and a few other characters around him as they involve mismanagement of land and others resources belonging to the state have paved the way for the surge in the cases of land grabbing in most parts of the state capital. Even there many cases of land grabbing involving some appointees of the governor, PDP lawmakers, serving local government officials and chieftains of the ruling party. Lines, Ltd. yesterday announced that its wholly owned subsidiary MOL Switch LLC (Representative & CEO: Tomoaki Ichida; Headquarters: California, U.S.) , which aims to invest in decarbonization technologies, became the first Japanese company to participate in Heirloom Carbon Technologies, Inc. (Heirloom; Representative & CEO: Shashank Samala; Headquarters: California, U.S.) , a developer of Direct Air Capture (DAC Note 2) technology. MOL, along with Mitsubishi Corporation invested through a simple agreement for future equity (SAFE) (Note 3) in July 2023. In addition, Heirloom recently completed a $150 million financing, along with several Japanese companies, including Mitsui & Co., Ltd. and Japan Airlines Co., Ltd. (Heirloom DAC Facilities) Heirloom is the world’s leading U.S. developer of DAC, a technology that removes CO2 directly from the atmosphere. Unlike conventional amine methods, Heirloom’s DAC technology uses limestone, the second most abundant and inexpensive mineral in the world, as a raw material, reducing the costs of the technology. Heirloom’s “Cypress” project (Note 4) is in development in the U.S. state of Louisiana, and has received a grant of up to US$600 million from the U.S. Department of Energy. The project’s goal is to remove about 1 million tons of CO2 per year from the atmosphere. Besides, the industry chamber also called for reducing marginal tax rates for personal income up to Rs 20 lakh per annum, saying that this would help trigger the virtuous cycle of consumption, higher growth and higher tax revenue as inflation has reduced the buying power of lower and middle-income earners. “The central excise duty alone accounts for approximately 21 percent of the retail price for petrol and 18 per cent for diesel. Since May 2022, these duties have not been adjusted in line with the approximately 40 per cent decrease in global crude prices. Lowering excise duty on fuel would help reduce overall inflation and increase disposable incomes,” the industry body said. “Domestic consumption has been critical to India's growth story, but inflationary pressures have somewhat eroded the purchasing power of consumers. The government’s interventions could focus on enhancing disposable incomes and stimulating spending to sustain economic momentum. Persistent food inflationary pressures also impinge upon low-income rural households who allocate a larger share to food in their consumption basket,” CII director general Chandrajit Banerjee, said. Banerjee further said that while recent quarters have shown promising signs of recovery in rural consumption, targeted government interventions, such as increasing per unit benefit under its key schemes like MGNREGS, PM-KISAN and PMAY, and providing consumption vouchers to low-income households, can further enhance the rural recovery. In its pre-budget proposals, the CII has also recommended an increase in the daily minimum wage under the MGNREGS from Rs 267 to Rs 375 as suggested by the ‘Expert Committee on fixing national minimum wage' in 2017, with the industry body estimating that this will entail an additional expenditure of Rs 42,000 crore. “The government should raise the annual payout under the PM-KISAN scheme from Rs 6,000 to Rs 8,000. Assuming 10 crore beneficiaries, this will entail an additional expenditure of Rs 20,000 crore,” it said. Meanwhile, ahead of the budget, the CII has launched the second part of its landmark manufacturing competitiveness Study, focusing on the transformative impact of smart technologies on India’s manufacturing sector. The industry body also highlighted in a report that the sector’s ongoing digital transformation and its critical role in achieving the ambitious goal of increasing the manufacturing GDP share to 25 per cent in the near future. The report showcases how cutting-edge technologies such as the internet of things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), robotics, and automation are reshaping the manufacturing landscape, driving optimisation, innovation, and global competitiveness. “High-capital industries like semiconductors, aerospace, and automotive are leading the charge in adopting these technologies, while traditional sectors like textiles and food processing are gradually transitioning towards digitalisation,” it said.
