This push is driving scientists to conjure up new battery chemistries or refine old ones. Naturally, it is also spawning a new generation of startups looking to scale the next, best battery. One of those is Molyon. Molyon recently emerged from 15 years of research at the University of Cambridge to commercialise a lithium-sulfur battery that it claims delivers twice the energy density of lithium-ion. Today, the startup secured $4.6mn to kickstart manufacturing at its first pilot facility. Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries not only store much more energy than lithium-ion, but they also don’t rely on rare minerals like cobalt, nickel, and graphite. However, to date, Li-S batteries have yet to be commercialised because of one big problem. Sulfur from the battery’s cathode tends to dissolve into the electrolyte – causing the anode to corrode and the battery to fail after only a few cycles. “The promise of lithium-sulfur batteries has been there for decades but until now it has not been possible to realise this potential because of the inherent chemistry challenges of working with sulfur,” explained Dr Ismail Sami, co-founder and CEO of Molyon. To overcome this problem, Molyon has developed a cathode technology based on metallic molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ), a compound made up of sulfur and molybdenum, an abundant element found in the Earth’s crust. MoS2 remains stable and provides high energy density over hundreds of cycles – potentially revolutionising the Li-S battery field. Sami co-founded Molyon in February of this year alongside his lab partner Dr Zhuangnan Li, who acts as the company’s CTO. The pair met whilst studying under the third co-founder Professor Manish Chhowalla. A fourth co-founder, Dr Sai Shivareddy (co-founder of Nyobolt ) is a commercial advisor to the company. Since patenting the discovery, the team has demonstrated practical batteries with energy densities of 500Wh per kg – approximately twice that of the typical Li-ion battery. Fuelled by fresh funding, Molyon will expand its team and work on its pilot facility. It will initially focus on making Li-S batteries for drones and robots, which could greatly benefit from the lighter weight and improved range. After that, the company plans to scale to electric cars, trucks, and planes. Molyon’s funding round — its first ever — was co-led by London-based deep tech investors IQ Capital and founder-led VC Plural, which launched a €400mn fund back in January. “ The UK is uniquely positioned to lead in lithium-sulfur technology,” wrote Carina Namih, partner at Plural, in a blog post . “ We are already one of the world-leading innovators in this emerging field, with the top labs and researchers based here. “The UK also has the talent base and scar tissue from earlier failed attempts to commercialize this technology — as is so often the case with technological progress, the lessons learnt from these failures will feed the second wave.”

"Today a new political cycle starts concerning housing," Carme Arcarazo, spokesperson for the Catalan Tenants Union, the main organiser, told reporters. "Investors must not be allowed to come to our cities and play with the apartments like a game of Monopoly," she added. The union would target "profiteers" who are taking "half of our salaries", Arcarazo said. The demonstrators demanded a 50 percent cut in rents, leases with an unlimited term and a ban on "speculative" sales of buildings. They threatened to start a rent strike. An estimated 22,000 people took part in a similar demonstration in Madrid on October 13. Campaigns have been launched in other cities. According to the Idealista specialised website, rental prices per square metre have risen 82 percent across Spain over the past decade. The average salary has gone up by 17 percent in that time, according to the national statistics institute. Facing pressure over a housing crisis, the government in 2023 passed legislation calling for more social housing, greater restrictions on rents in high demand areas and penalties for owners who do not occupy properties. Thousands demand lower rents at Barcelona demoGumla: Many Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG) settlements situated in the challenging terrain of Netarhat plateau are now illuminated by solar-powered lights . This transformation comes as a result of the Gumla administration 's initiative towards a comprehensive development of these tribal communities living in scattered settlements. The administration has prioritised infrastructure and health projects, recognising the unique requirements for their advancement. The administration has installed 700 solar-powered street lights in remote and PVTG areas. The initial phase aims to install solar lighting at 2,015 locations across 387 distant PVTG settlements in the district. The district has completed three door-to-door surveys over the past two years, ensuring PVTG families' inclusion in Ayushman Bharat, sickle cell anaemia testing, and Prime Minister (PM) Ujjwala Yojna initiatives. "Last year, Gumla's work in PVTG areas was also showcased before the PM at the 3rd national conference for chief secretaries," said a senior authority here. "The installing of solar lights in remote areas is another such initiative. Solar street lights are being installed in remote areas through the PMJANMAN, Aadi Adarsh Gram Yojana and state schemes," Gumla DC Karn Satyarthi told TOI. "More PVTG villages like Jaldega, Dumarpani and Mirchaipat are being provided with solar microgrids. Our aim to illuminate all PVTG villages with solar electricity by the middle of 2025," Satyarthi said.
