A_362 (4,000).By MICHELLE L. PRICE WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) â An online spat between factions of Donald Trumpâs supporters over immigration and the tech industry has thrown internal divisions in his political movement into public display, previewing the fissures and contradictory views his coalition could bring to the White House. The rift laid bare the tensions between the newest flank of Trumpâs movement â wealthy members of the tech world including billionaire Elon Musk and fellow entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy and their call for more highly skilled workers in their industry â and people in Trumpâs Make America Great Again base who championed his hardline immigration policies. The debate touched off this week when Laura Loomer , a right-wing provocateur with a history of racist and conspiratorial comments, criticized Trumpâs selection of Sriram Krishnan as an adviser on artificial intelligence policy in his coming administration. Krishnan favors the ability to bring more skilled immigrants into the U.S. Loomer declared the stance to be ânot America First policyâ and said the tech executives who have aligned themselves with Trump were doing so to enrich themselves. Much of the debate played out on the social media network X, which Musk owns. Loomerâs comments sparked a back-and-forth with venture capitalist and former PayPal executive David Sacks , whom Trump has tapped to be the âWhite House A.I. & Crypto Czar.â Musk and Ramaswamy, whom Trump has tasked with finding ways to cut the federal government , weighed in, defending the tech industryâs need to bring in foreign workers. It bloomed into a larger debate with more figures from the hard-right weighing in about the need to hire U.S. workers, whether values in American culture can produce the best engineers, free speech on the internet, the newfound influence tech figures have in Trumpâs world and what his political movement stands for. Trump has not yet weighed in on the rift, and his presidential transition team did not respond to a message seeking comment. Musk, the worldâs richest man who has grown remarkably close to the president-elect , was a central figure in the debate, not only for his stature in Trumpâs movement but his stance on the tech industryâs hiring of foreign workers. Technology companies say H-1B visas for skilled workers, used by software engineers and others in the tech industry, are critical for hard-to-fill positions. But critics have said they undercut U.S. citizens who could take those jobs. Some on the right have called for the program to be eliminated, not expanded. Born in South Africa, Musk was once on an a H-1B visa himself and defended the industryâs need to bring in foreign workers. âThere is a permanent shortage of excellent engineering talent,â he said in a post. âIt is the fundamental limiting factor in Silicon Valley.â Related Articles National Politics | Should the U.S. increase immigration levels for highly skilled workers? His tough immigration policies, including his pledge for a mass deportation, were central to his winning presidential campaign. He has focused on immigrants who come into the U.S. illegally but he has also sought curbs on legal immigration , including family-based visas. As a presidential candidate in 2016, Trump called the H-1B visa program âvery badâ and âunfairâ for U.S. workers. After he became president, Trump in 2017 issued a âBuy American and Hire Americanâ executive order , which directed Cabinet members to suggest changes to ensure H-1B visas were awarded to the highest-paid or most-skilled applicants to protect American workers. Trumpâs businesses, however, have hired foreign workers, including waiters and cooks at his Mar-a-Lago club , and his social media company behind his Truth Social app has used the the H-1B program for highly skilled workers. During his 2024 campaign for president, as he made immigration his signature issue, Trump said immigrants in the country illegally are âpoisoning the blood of our countryâ and promised to carry out the largest deportation operation in U.S. history. But in a sharp departure from his usual alarmist message around immigration generally, Trump told a podcast this year that he wants to give automatic green cards to foreign students who graduate from U.S. colleges. âI think you should get automatically, as part of your diploma, a green card to be able to stay in this country,â he told the âAll-Inâ podcast with people from the venture capital and technology world. Those comments came on the cusp of Trumpâs budding alliance with tech industry figures, but he did not make the idea a regular part of his campaign message or detail any plans to pursue such changes.USC RB Woody Marks exits in first half vs. Notre Dame
Reader feedbackNew images of suspected UnitedHealthcare CEO killer released, but no answers on his identity or location They have seen him smiling on a hostel security camera, but donât know his name. They found the backpack he discarded while fleeing, but donât know where heâs gone. As the search for UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompsonâs killer goes on, investigators are reckoning with a tantalizing dichotomy: They have troves of evidence, but the shooter remains an enigma. Police donât know who he is, where he is, or why he did it, though they are confident it was a targeted attack instead of a random act. âThe net is tightening,â New York City Mayor Eric Adams said Saturday. Hours after he spoke, police divers were seen searching a pond in Central Park, where the killer fled after the shooting. Officers have been scouring the park for days for any possible clues and found his bag there Friday. Late Saturday, police released two additional photos of the suspected shooter that appeared to be from a camera mounted inside a taxi. The first shows him outside the vehicle and the second shows him looking through the partition between the back seat and the front of the cab. In both, his face is partially obscured by a blue, medical-style mask. Retracing the gunmanâs steps using surveillance video, police say, it appears he left the city by bus soon after the shooting Wednesday morning outside the New York Hilton Midtown. He was seen on video at an uptown bus station about 45 minutes later, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said. With the high-profile search expanding across state lines, the FBI announced late Friday that it was offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction, adding to a reward of up to $10,000 that the NYPD has offered. Police say they believe the suspect acted alone. Police provided no updates on the hunt Saturday, but investigators are urging patience â even with a killer on the loose. Hundreds of detectives are combing through video recordings and social media, vetting tips from the public and interviewing people who might have information, including Thompsonâs family and coworkers and the shooterâs randomly assigned roommates at the Manhattan hostel where he stayed. âThis isnât âBlue Bloods.â Weâre not going to solve this in 60 minutes,â Kenny told reporters Friday. âWeâre painstakingly going through every bit of evidence that we can come across.â The shooter paid cash at the hostel, presented what police believe was a fake ID and is believed to have paid cash for taxi rides and other transactions. He didnât speak to others at the hostel and almost always kept his face covered with a mask, only lowering it while eating. But investigators caught a break when they came across security camera images of an unguarded moment in which he briefly showed his face soon after arriving in New York on Nov. 24. Police distributed the images to news outlets and on social media but so far havenât been able to ID him using facial recognition â possibly because of the angle of the images or limitations on how the NYPD is allowed to use that technology, Kenny said. On Friday evening, investigators found a backpack in Central Park that had been worn by the gunman, police said. They didnât immediately reveal what, if anything, it contained but said it would be tested and analyzed. Another potential clue, a fingerprint on an item he purchased at a Starbucks minutes before the shooting, has so far proven useless for identifying him, Kenny said. Aided by surveillance cameras on nearly every building and block, police have been able to retrace the shooterâs movements. They know he ambushed Thompson at 6:44 a.m. as the executive arrived at the Hilton for his companyâs annual investor conference, using a 9 mm pistol that resembled the guns farmers use to put down animals without causing a loud noise. They know ammunition found near Thompsonâs body bore the words âdelay,â âdenyâ and âdepose,â mimicking a phrase used by insurance industry critics. Kenny said the fact that the shooter knew UnitedHealthcare group was holding a conference at the hotel and what route Thompson might take to get there suggested that he could possibly be a disgruntled employee or client. Investigators know from surveillance video that the shooter fled into Central Park on a bicycle and ditched it around 7 a.m. near 85th Street. He then walked a couple blocks and got into a taxi, arriving at 7:30 a.m. at the George Washington Bridge Bus Station, which is near the northern tip of Manhattan and offers commuter service to New Jersey and Greyhound routes to Philadelphia, Boston and Washington. Investigators donât know what happened next. They are searching through more surveillance video but have yet to locate video of the shooter getting on a bus or exiting the station. âWe have reason to believe that the person in question has left New York City,â Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch told CNN on Friday. Police have determined from video that the gunman was in the city for 10 days before the shooting. He arrived at Manhattanâs main bus terminal on a Greyhound bus that originated in Atlanta, though itâs not clear whether he embarked there or at one of about a half-dozen stops along the route. Immediately after that, he took a cab to the vicinity of the Hilton and was there for about a half hour, Kenny said. At around 11 p.m. on the night he arrived, he went by taxi to the HI New York City Hostel. It was there, while speaking with an employee in the lobby, that he briefly pulled down the mask and smiled, giving investigators the brief glimpse they are now relying on to identify and capture a killer. â Associated Press writers Michael Balsamo in Washington, Jake Offenhartz, Cedar Attanasio and Karen Matthews in New York, John Seewer in Toledo, Ohio, and Jeff Martin in Atlanta contributed. The experimental season is over. Next comes what could be termed the exhibition season, followed by the real deal. Are Washington State and Oregon State ready for their new existence? Are they on track to thrive when the Pac-12âs rebuild becomes official and five schools from the Mountain West join the conference? Did the fall of 2024 tell us anything about the fall of 2026 for the Cougars and Beavers? âThis year, especially for Washington State but also the Pac-12 â it was an incredible win for the Pac-12 because there a season,â Ryan Leaf, The CW network analyst and former WSU quarterback, told the Hotline. Given the situation just 15 months ago, after 10 schools decided to flee the Pac-12 and leave the Cougars and Beavers behind, the past three months have been an undeniable success. The two-team conference produced a season that met major college standards operationally and competitively. The game broadcasts on The CW were first-rate. The Cougars and Beavers recorded three wins over power conference opponents. WSU won the Apple Cup and became bowl-eligible. Yet both teams finished on low notes â a reminder of the challenge ahead. The Beavers (5-7) were one game short of bowl eligibility, unable to overcome a long midseason losing streak. They experienced a barrage of injuries, especially on defense, and ineffective quarterback play. Gevani McCoy, Ben Gulbranson and Gabarri Johnson completed just 60 percent of their passes and threw more interceptions (11) than touchdowns (seven). Were they used properly by first-year coach Trent Bray and his staff? Gulbranson had the best efficiency rating and highest yards-per-attempt but spent much of the season behind McCoy. âEver since Jake Luton (in 2019), they havenât had a quarterback who was âthe guy,ââ said The CWâs Nigel Burton, a former Oregon State assistant coach. âThey thought DJ Uiagalelei would be that, but he clearly wasnât. They have got to find someone who can throw and run at this level.â That wasnât an issue in Pullman, where sophomore quarterback John Mateer emerged as an elite playmaker: He led the country in total touchdowns with 44 â three more than his former teammate, Cam Ward, who transferred to Miami last winter. The Cougars (8-4) beat Washington and Texas Tech, won eight of their first nine, climbed to No. 19 in the AP poll and were on the outskirts of the College Football Playoff race in the middle of November. But a second-half defensive meltdown at New Mexico derailed their playoff drive and seemingly squashed their sense of urgency. The Cougars lost at Oregon State the following week and blew a fourth-quarter lead against lowly Wyoming at home in the finale. All three losses came with WSU favored by double digits. âTheir only real goal when they were 8-1 was the playoff,â Leaf said. âWhen that went away, I think there really was a disconnect.â In his view, âpeople checked out.â Whatâs next for the Pac-12? At the conference level, there are momentous issues to address. The Pac-12 must sign a media rights agreement for the 2025 season and beyond, add at least one more football-playing school and prepare to welcome the five new members (Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State and Utah State) on July 1, 2026. (Feedback from media companies will dictate which school, or schools, the conference targets and the degree to which it attempts to bolster its basketball product, which will include Gonzaga in the fall of 2026.) On the front lines, the Beavers and Cougars must fortify their rosters and coaching staffs for the next version of the Pac-12. If this season is any indication, the rebuilt conference will prove challenging. Washington State and Oregon State hardly dominated their Mountain West competition. In fact, they lost more games head-to-head (eight) than they won (seven). Clearly, neither program is on Boise Stateâs level. But several losses came to teams that finished in the bottom half of the Mountain West standings. There are immediate concerns, as well. Oregon State must identify a dependable quarterback, whether itâs one of the returnees or a transfer. And that quarterback needs targets in the passing game. âThey need speed,â Burton said of the receivers. âThey have nobody who can take the top off a defense and let (receivers) Trent Walker and Darrius Clemons go to work underneath.â Related Articles The offensive line is âgood enough,â Burton added. But the other side of scrimmage is in bad shape. âThey are woefully behind on the defensive line,â he said of a unit that allowed 186 rushing yards per game. âThatâs the main issue. They have nobody who can push people in the middle and nobody who scares you off the edge.â Washington Stateâs to-do list isnât nearly as long, with one item looming over everything: The Cougars must keep Mateer from entering the transfer portal â a task that seemingly became more daunting this week. On Monday, WSU offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle left for the same position at Oklahoma. On Wednesday, Sooners quarterback Jackson Arnold entered the portal, potentially opening a starting spot for Mateer, who grew up in Texas. And on Thursday, freshman tailback Wayshawn Parker announced he was entering the transfer portal. âThey need to hang on for dear life to Mateer,â Burton said. âIf they keep the team together, they have all the pieces.â

Woke filmmaker shares bizarre reason he thinks Trump will ban Wicked movie By MELISSA KOENIG FOR DAILYMAIL.COM Published: 17:42 EST, 27 December 2024 | Updated: 18:00 EST, 27 December 2024 e-mail View comments Woke filmmaker Adam McKay has speculated that President-Elect Donald Trump will ban the widely popular Wicked film when he is in office. The Big Short director wrote on X Monday that the film starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo was released at a time when the United States 'has never been more right wing and propagandized.' 'On a pure storytelling level Wicked Part 1 is right up there as one of the most radical big studio Hollywood movies ever made,' he wrote, before naming other films he placed into that category like Bridge on the River Kwai, The Sound of Music and The Hunger Games. 'I know Part 2 swings back to the center a bit, but Part 1 is nakedly about radicalization in the face of careerism, fascism, propaganda,' McKay said of the film about the Wicked Witch of the West. 'What's really striking about Wicked Part 1 is that it's coming out NOW when America has never been more right wing and propagandized,' he continued. 'And yes, I know the theatrical production and the book are much older so part of the timing is a coincidence, but still...' It has been a major box office success, easily surpassing its $145million budget. The first installment of the two-part film has already made over $500million. Woke filmmaker Adam McKay has speculated that President-Elect Donald Trump may ban the Wicked film after he takes office The film starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo has been a major box office hit Yet McKay seemed to think its success will eventually draw the ire of Trump. He shared that belief after another X user thanked him for the 'alternative perspective.' 'Really? Wow! I'm sorry I didn't even think of seeing it when it was showing here in Dublin,' the X user replied. 'It just looked like more American fantasy, franchise-wringing and CGI fare to me. 'I'll have to see it when it gets to streaming. Thanks for the alternative perspective,' he wrote. McKay then replied that he thinks the X user will 'be shocked.' 'If America keeps going on the track it is, I wouldn't be surprised to see the movie will be banned in three to five years,' he wrote. McKay claimed Trump is already considering shutting down nonprofits, noting: 'Things [are] changing fast' The second installment of the film is due to be released in theaters in November 2025, and the first part is likely to be available to stream on Peacock early into the new year Then, when another X user asked McKay for clarification, he seemed to take aim at the future president. 'You really think I'm 100 percent saying the movie will for sure be banned to the point where no one can ever see it?' he asked, rhetorically. 'The idea of shutting down nonprofits at the President's discretion is in motion,' he claimed. 'Things [are] changing fast.' Despite McKay's fears, the second installment of the film is due to be released in theaters in November 2025, and the first part is likely to be available to stream on Peacock early into the new year. Ind vs Aus Live Score, 4th Test Day 3: India Look To Avoid Follow-OnTreyarch put measures in place to prevent cheating in Black Ops 6 Ranked Play, but they werenât enough to hold the floodgates. To access BO6 Ranked Play , you must first win 50 multiplayer matches so the RICOCHET anti-cheat system can build a match history that can be used to weed out any discrepancies in Ranked Play. In addition, RICOCHET uses a replay investigation tool to watch back completed matches as part of the investigation process. But these preventative measures werenât enough. Just hours after the game mode launched, clips circulated , exposing cheaters for using aim bot and other external services to take over high-rank lobbies. The 100 Thieves founder took to social media and said , âThe cheating in Ranked Play on Black Ops 6 is the worst itâs been. Iâm actually disgusted. Donât know how itâs gotten to this point, but the game is completely chalked.â Call of Duty League pros also spoke out about the game mode not doing a good enough job of banning cheaters. âRanked play turned my brain to mush tonight. The hackers are winning,â Atlanta FaZe star Simp said . In response to the issue, LA Thievesâs Ghosty suggested , âKernel-level anti-cheat is the only effective method I know thatâs worked, but Iâm not versed enough about how hard it is to implement.â Why isnât RICOCHET anti-cheat working? As Ghosty suggested, Kernel-level anti-cheat is a technology that detects cheating by identifying malware and hacks on the userâs computer. Ironically, RIOCHET already uses anti-cheat uses Kernel technology, but that still hasnât been enough to properly stop cheating in high-rank lobbies. Related: And, without kill cams, itâs challenging to gather evidence to report cheaters. Players on PlayStation and Xbox also canât avoid cheaters on PC because turning off cross-play is not an option . This isnât the first year cheating has been a problem for Ranked Play. CDL pros slammed Ranked Play hackers in MW2, and players also reported an uptick of cheating in MW3 . So, although we have seen similar complaints before, frustration continues to mount amongst pro players and creators who rely on Call of Duty to make a living. In the November 21 update , Treyarch addressed a few glitches in Ranked Play, but the development team has yet to an issue a statement on the overflow of cheating reports.

Investing in young people by providing training in new technologies and digital systems will be critical to the development of Barbadosâ economy, says Minister of State in the Ministry of Education Sandra Husbands. She was delivering the feature address at the Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology 2024 graduation ceremony held at the Wildey Gymnasium on Saturday night. Husbands said the world was undergoing a fourth industrial revolution centred around new technological advancements and it was important for the nationâs youth to be exposed to these new technologies and carry the island forward. âYou have emerged into a world in which there is the fourth industrial revolution; it is here disrupting all technologies and processes. At its heart is the digital revolution and this ushers in new ways to do new things and new ways of doing old things,â she said. âDigital technology must be understood, digital technology must be mastered and then digital technology must be integrated into the Barbadian landscape and into the skill sets of our people, hence the necessity of SJPIâs mission to produce skilled and innovative graduates through competency based training and the promotion of lifelong learning.â You Might Be Interested In Ross University opens Barbados campus UWI supports innovation for regional growth St George Secondary closed next week The minister said the vocational institution therefore had a significant role to play in ensuring young people were well equipped and prepared for the new world of work. âThe work of SJPI is essential to the capacity of Barbados to continue to form enterprises which can attract business from a sophisticated global environment. If we are going to attract new investment, that will bring jobs that pay well, that provide Barbadians with the opportunity to live a good life. It is important that we build the skill sets of all of our citizens because it is for those skills that those businesses will make a determination that they will establish business in Barbados. âSo you are important to that process, investing in you and investing in your skills is what will help us to generate that type of economic growth that guarantees all of you an opportunity to live that best life by providing a new generation of the Barbadian workforce with the ability to perform to a global standard in technical and vocational skills. And in so doing, the SJPI pursues its vision to be a global centre of excellence for technological and vocational education.â Additionally, Husbands told the graduates that they will need more than certificates and other qualifications to be successful in their careers. She told them that good moral standing will take them far and positive characters reflecting Barbadian culture will make them stand out as global citizens. âWe also want to make sure that we send you forth in such a way that you demonstrate to the world the core values which govern this esteemed establishment. Those values are integrity, accountability, credibility, excellence, innovation, professionalism, and increasing value. And why are these important? People in the world judge you first of all, by how you look, by how you speak and then how you act and people in the world want to engage persons, they can trust. âYou will be trusted if people feel you are comfortable that you will stand and act truthfully that you are disciplined, that no matter what, your word can be relied on to execute a task, that you will act fairly with others, that you will be objective in your views and that you will conduct yourself in a way that allows them to feel safe around you and to trust you and having sent you forth with a skill set, it was necessary for us to ensure that we also help you to understand these values at the SJPI and encourage you to integrate them into your way of living, into your way of acting because this is how you will not only get an opportunity, secure an opportunity but be able to use each opportunity to move on to a higher one because your reputation will go before you and you will be in high demand,â she said. Sharia Hall, who earned a diploma distinction in office administration was the valedictorian. During her address, she said that this milestone was an important one and although the journey to securing accreditation was difficult, she congratulated her fellow graduates for persevering and not giving up. She shared her experience pursuing her qualification. âFor me excelling in school wasnât always a given. I faced moments of frustration or even failure that made me question if I could succeed. There were times when balancing school, family and personal struggles felt overwhelming. The fear of failure and disappointing those I cared about the most seemed to overpower everything else. But it was in those moments that I learned what excelling purely means. âExcelling in school is often seen as a result of natural talent but what Iâve learned is that itâs about so much more. Itâs not about perfection. Itâs about perseverance, itâs about showing up every day even when it feels impossible,â she said. Close to 300 students graduated from the institution. Hall and two other students-Rynell Weekes and Jenita Clarke- received special wards for their academic performance. The theme of the graduation ceremony was: Embracing Technology, Empowering the Future. (SZB)Billionaires in Virtual Worlds. Three pro-BNP organisations yesterday submitted a memorandum to the Indian High Commission in Dhaka, demanding the stop of misinformation about Bangladesh and ensuring the safety of Bangladeshi missions in India. The memorandum also urged investigations into the recent attack on Bangladesh's Assistant High Commission in Agartala and sought the protection of minority rights in both countries. A six-member delegation from Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal, Swechchhasebak Dal, and Chhatra Dal handed over the memorandum to an official of the Indian mission in Baridhara at 1:15pm. The team consisted of Jubo Dal President Monayem Munna, General Secretary Nurul Islam Nayan, Swechchhasebak Dal President SM Jilani, General Secretary Rajib Ahsan, Chhatra Dal President Rakibul Islam Rakib, and General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir. Addressing reporters in front of the Indian High Commission after submitting the memorandum, Jubo Dal President Munna said, "There is no compromise when it comes to Bangladesh's independence and sovereignty ... We want friendly and harmonious neighbours, not ones with an aggressive mindset." Earlier in the day, thousands of activists from the three organisations began their protest march at 11:30am from the BNP's Nayapaltan central office. The march, which was jointly organised by Jubo Dal, Chhatra Dal, and Swechchhasebak Dal, was halted near Rampura Bridge at 12:35pm, where police set up barricades and urged cooperation. The march was organised in protest of the attack on the Assistant High Commission, desecration of the Bangladesh's national flag in Kolkata, and an alleged conspiracy to incite communal unrest. The two-page memorandum, addressed to Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma, expressed concerns about recent events that could strain relations between Bangladesh and India. Referring to the attack on the Assistant High Commission of Bangladesh and the desecration of the national flag of Bangladesh, the document stated, "This is a serious breach of diplomatic norms and international law, including the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, 1961, which mandates the inviolability of diplomatic missions." Calling for immediate action against those responsible, the memorandum also criticised the Indian government's reaction to the recent arrest of an expelled ISKCON leader. It added that unreasonable and unnecessary tensions have been fuelled by misinformation, which misrepresents facts and is contrary to the spirit of friendship between our nations. The pro-BNP bodies expressed "dismay" over the role of Indian media, accusing outlets of "sensationalising events and spreading aggressive misinformation" about minority issues in Bangladesh. "Such disinformation depicts a clear erosion of journalistic integrity," the memorandum read, adding, "Honest reporting and constructive engagement are vital for fostering trust between the two nations." The memorandum affirmed BNP's commitment to safeguarding minority rights in Bangladesh. "Any attacks on any minority are driven by personal disputes or land conflicts rather than deep-seated communal animosities. "In Bangladesh, Muslim volunteers actively protect Hindu communities and their religious establishments from opportunistic violence." The three pro-BNP bodies also urged the Indian authorities to ensure the safety and security of minorities, including Muslims, and their religious establishments in India. Highlighting the importance of a stable and mutually respectful partnership between Bangladesh and India, the memorandum said, "The BNP remains committed to fostering strong and friendly relations based on the UN Charter principle of the sovereign equality of all its members." Meanwhile, speaking at a brief rally before the march, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi alleged that the Indian ruling party is trying to send back Sheikh Hasina, which is nothing but direct aggression. "What the ruling party of India is doing to bring Sheikh Hasina back is nothing but direct aggression in the language of political science." He also accused Indian politicians and media of fabricating false narratives about minority oppression in Bangladesh.
