CECO Environmental Announces Expiration of HSR Waiting PeriodTORONTO — Canada's main stock index rose Thursday, helped by strength in energy and utilities stocks, while U.S. markets moved lower ahead of reports on the labour market on both sides of the border. The S&P/TSX composite index closed up 38.86 points at 25,680.04. In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 248.33 points at 44,765.71. The S&P 500 index was down 11.38 points at 6,075.11, while the Nasdaq composite was down 34.86 points at 19,700.26. Friday will bring the monthly jobs reports in both the U.S. and Canada, which markets will be eyeing for clues on upcoming interest rate decisions by central banks, said Kevin Headland, co-chief investment strategist at Manulife Investment Management. The U.S. Federal Reserve has several key data reports coming before it makes its own decision on Dec. 18, said Headland, including inflation. Markets are currently leaning toward a quarter-percentage-point cut from the Fed, he said. But “there’s a lot of data for them to digest before the announcement.” The Bank of Canada’s decision is next week, and Headland said markets seem to think there’s a good chance the central bank could cut by an outsized half-percentage point. “In my belief, the bank is trying to front-run the mortgage renewals that are coming due over the next year or so, to just avoid some of the bigger hits to discretionary spending,” said Headland. “There’s no reason for them not to continue rate cuts unless there’s a surprise tomorrow.” Canadian bank earnings continued to roll in on Thursday. CIBC saw its profit rise while its provisions for loan losses dropped. TD also saw its profit rise, though its adjusted earnings were lower as the bank continues to work through the fallout from its anti-money laundering deficiencies. Meanwhile, BMO’s earnings were a miss on analyst expectations but the bank said it expects loan performance to improve in 2025. So far, there haven’t been any major surprises from bank earnings overall, said Headland. Bitcoin continued its meteoric rise, briefly breaching US$100,000 for the first time after U.S. president-elect Donald Trump tapped crypto advocate Paul Atkins to head the Securities and Exchange Commission. “US$100,000 is definitely a psychological threshold,” said Headland. “I guess time will tell whether it can remain at that level,” he added. “If we’re getting downside pressure to risk assets, I would assume that Bitcoin and other companies will be swept up in that negativity.” But for now, the surge is indicative of the broader positive momentum markets have enjoyed since Donald Trump’s election, said Headland. The Canadian dollar traded for 71.24 cents US compared with 71.09 cents US on Wednesday. The January crude oil contract was down 24 cents at US$68.30 per barrel and the January natural gas contract was up four cents at US$3.08 per mmBTU. The February gold contract was down US$27.80 at US$2,648.40 an ounce and the March copper contract was down a penny at US$4.19 a pound. — With files from The Associated Press This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 5, 2024. What Are The New Travel Trends in US Tourism Sector and How It Will Affect in Industry ?Engineers of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) expressed satisfaction over a live demonstration of a pilot project steel slag based ECOFIX technology to fix deep and shallow potholes conducted on busiest Avenue road near Anjani Temple in Bengaluru city on Wednesday by scientists of CSIR-Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), a premier road research institute of the country. The CSIR-CRRI Steel Slag road technology is well tested for its durability and performance in Gujarat, Jharkhand, Maharashtra and Arunachal Pradesh. During the live demonstration, Principal-Scientist of CSIR-CRRI and inventor of the ECOFIX technology Dr Sanjay Pandey carried out a road repair demonstration on Avenue road and immediately after its repair, the road was opened for vehicular movement, making BBMP engineers happy. Engineer-in-Chief of BBMP Dr B.S. Prahallad stated to make use of the technology for eco-friendly sustainable road repair in Bengaluru city in coming days. He termed ECOFIX technology “a boon to the city roads.” After taking note of the advantages of the ECOFIX technology, Prahallad said during monsoon season when the majority of hot mix plants cannot be operated but with ECOFIX technology “It is possible to carry out durable road repairs in an eco-friendly manner.” The Principal Scientist Dr Sanjay Pandey stated ECOFIX technology is developed using industrial waste of steel industries (iron and steel) and has the unique ability to repair the water-logged pothole without any dewatering management. While conventional road repair technologies require dewatering of potholes and application of tack coat, Pandey said with ECOFIX technology can be used even under waterlogged conditions without any tack coat requirement. With ECOFIX technology, he said repaired road surfaces will perform better than regular roads, ensuring durability and longevity. The ECOFIX technology, Pandey said, does not need any heating of aggregate and bitumen hence it significantly reduces the Greenhouse Gases (GHG) emission in the atmosphere caused by regular road maintenance techniques.

After reports Dragonfly delivery drivers reportedly walked off the job this week, the company is assuring customers there will not be any service disruptions as a result of the situation. On Tuesday, drivers gathered outside the Dragonfly depot on Beaver Lake Road in Kelowna, to protest work conditions, claiming long hours sometimes in unsafe conditions, social media posts showed. Dragonfly is a delivery service that states it, “optimizes 3,000 routes daily across Canada for more than 25 independent delivery partners," including Amazon. The workers are not unionized. Many on social media were in support of the drivers, saying they often had packages delivered late at night and in rural areas with no lights. “I don’t want them late at night either!! I always thought it was odd why they started delivering so late! I don’t blame the drivers,” wrote Tammy W. Jones. While others who lived in smaller communities like Princeton complained that they waited too long for delivery or that packages were damaged after arrival. “ What’s happening with my packages is the drivers are marking the packages as attempted delivery when they haven’t actually tried to deliver,” said Anthony ter Keurs in Princeton. On Thursday (Nov. 21), Intelcom Media Team with Dragonfly told Black Press that it recognizes and values the essential role drivers and delivery personnel play in the company’s collective success. “We took notice of the dissatisfaction of some of our independent delivery contractors’ drivers in Kelowna, and we take their concerns seriously,” stated Dragonfly in an email. The company claims it has been in discussions with the independent delivery contractors who employ the drivers to better understand their needs and expectations, since Tuesday. However, Dragonfly did not specifically clarify that the drivers had actually walked off the job. “We are committed to identifying a satisfactory and sustainable solution that reconciles the operational imperatives of our industry with the well-being of the drivers employed by our delivery partners while continuing to meet our commitment to customer expectations,” said Dragonfly. Capital News attended the Dragonfly depot on Thursday and Friday but did not see anyone on site including workers protesting, and was unable to connect with any drivers before publication. Dragonfly is based in Montreal, Que. and has operations both in Australia and the U.S.

TAMPA, Fla. — This is the game to remember. No matter what else happens the rest of the way, this is the game that best represents who the Bucs were in 2024. With a new offensive coordinator and rookies at running back, receiver and center, the Bucs transformed from a mediocre offense into one of the most potent scoring machines in the NFL in 2024. With their playoff hopes still alive coming into the afternoon, the Bucs were nearly flawless on offense in a 48-14 victory against the Panthers at Raymond James Stadium. Bucky Irving became the first Tampa Bay rookie with more than 1,000 yards rushing since Doug Martin in 2012, and Jalen McMillan continued this late-season surge with two more touchdown receptions to give him six in his last four games. The Bucs finished with 551 total yards, which is the most they’ve gained in a non-overtime game since getting 604 yards against the Giants in 2012. Game ball Mayfield threw for 359 yards and five touchdowns. Irving had 190 yards from scrimmage. McMillan scored two more touchdowns. Pffft! It was Nondescript Tight End Day at Raymond James Stadium and we’re giving a pair of game balls to Devin Culp and Payne Durham. Culp, a seventh-round pick from Washington in April, had played only five snaps from scrimmage in Tampa Bay’s first 15 games. He had his first three NFL receptions for 52 yards. Durham, a fifth-round pick in 2013, came in with 12 career receptions and caught two passes for 36 yards, including his first NFL touchdown. Play of the day Hard to find a turning point in a 48-14 game. So instead we’ll go with Joe Tryon-Shoyinka’s blocked punt. He hasn’t quite lived up to expectations as a first-round pick, and he may be nearing the end of his tenure in Tampa Bay with his rookie contract set to expire, so it was nice to see Tryon-Shoyinka get a little love on Sunday. Keep an eye on We interrupt all of the back-slapping with this public service announcement: the secondary has a new limp. Along with Antoine Winfield Jr., who is out with a knee injury, and Christian Izien, who went on injured reserve this past week, cornerback Jamel Dean left Sunday’s game with a knee problem. Dean missed four games earlier this season with a hamstring pull. Considering Tampa Bay came into the weekend ranked No. 30 in pass defense, that’s not a good sign with the playoffs looming. NFC South update The Bucs won the NFC South at 8-9 in 2022. They won it with a 9-8 record last season. They’re doing even better this season at 9-7, but their fate is not yet determined. Tampa Bay needs Atlanta to lose one of its remaining two games, which includes a date later Sunday night against Washington, to win the division. Oh yeah, the Bucs also need to win next week against New Orleans. Up next A 10-win season is not only within Tampa Bay’s grasp, it is practically gift-wrapped. The Bucs finish the regular season at home against the Saints. New Orleans is on the way to its worst season in nearly 20 years. ©2024 Tampa Bay Times. Visit at tampabay.com . The Yomiuri Shimbun 7:00 JST, December 30, 2024 Websites that allow users create sexually explicit deepfake images using generative AI received more than 18 million visits from Japan over a year, a survey by The Yomiuri Shimbun has found. That makes Japan the third-largest country in the world for such traffic after the United States and India. It is becoming increasingly common both in Japan and abroad for people to create explicit deepfakes of others and then spread the images via social media, and websites that let users create such images are believed to play a major role in the problem. One expert has called for rules and regulations to prevent harm in Japan. In the survey, The Yomiuri Shimbun identified 41 websites that say they let users create fake sexual images. Visits to the sites were also examined by country for the year from December 2023 to November 2024, using a tool provided by digital analysis firm Similarweb Ltd. The United States saw the most traffic at about 59.73 million visits, followed by India at around 24.57 million visits, Japan at about 18.43 million visits, Russia at about 17.59 million visits and Germany at around 16.86 million visits. From Japan, about 410,000 people accessed the websites each month on average, with 80% of users visiting via a smartphone. The websites allow users to upload images of people and alter the images to remove people’s clothes. Instructions on the websites are mostly given in English and Russian, with some sites offering Japanese. More than half the websites are believed to have been launched this year. With the rise of these sites, there has been a similar rise in the creation of fake and unauthorized images, as well as videos, and the sharing of this content online. There were confirmed to be 95,820 deepfake videos online in 2023, or 5.5 times more videos than in 2019, and 98% of these were sexual videos, according to a survey by U.S. security firm Security Hero. As deepfakes have become more common, other countries have moved to draft new laws. “To prevent people from easily creating fake sexual images, Japan also needs to consider laws and regulations, as well as provide instruction on information literacy to keep people from making such harmful images,” said Ichiro Sato, a professor specializing in information science at the National Institute of Informatics.MAGA influencers were offered thousands of dollars to promote Trump loyalist’s failed secretary of state bid

Before his death today, Jimmy Carter defied illness and death for years. When his melanoma spread to his brain in 2015, he drew praise for announcing it publicly. Even as he underwent treatment, he continued to teach Sunday school in his home town's Baptist church. Within months, he announced that he was cancer-free. Four years later, Carter fell at least three times, at one point breaking a hip and at another requiring 14 stitches. Each time he bounced back, even showing up for a Habitat for Humanity home-building project shortly after one stumble. But he has slowly retreated from public life lately, making fewer and fewer appearances or statements and was unable to attend President Biden's inauguration in January 2021. However, he lived long enough to outlast two presidents who followed him and his own vice president, Walter Mondale. He became the longest-living president in March 2019 when he passed former President George H.W. Bush, who died four months before. Although Carter, nicknamed Jimmy Cardigan after once wearing a jumper for a televised speech, left the White House after one of the biggest landslide defeats of the modern era, he was one of very few US leaders to be memorialised while still alive. The evolution of his legacy was unusual as he had such a long period between the end of his unpopular presidency and the announcement at the weekend that he would undergo no further treatment to die peacefully at his home. Carter's time in the White House was marred by his struggles to respond to formidable challenges, including a major energy crisis, high inflation, and unemployment. He took office after Gerald Ford left the entire US government in disarray. Carter entered the Oval Office facing mounting challenges - an energy crisis, Soviet aggression and, above all, a deep mistrust of leadership by voters. In foreign affairs, he reopened US relations with China and tried to broker peace in the historic Arab-Israeli conflict, but was damaged late in his term by a hostage crisis in Iran. Carter's diagnosis of America's "crisis of confidence" did little to boost his flagging popularity, and in 1980 he was defeated in the general election by Ronald Reagan. Over the following decades, Carter built a distinguished career as a diplomat, humanitarian and author, pursuing conflict resolution in countries around the globe. He was awarded the Noble Peace Prize in 2002 "for his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development." Born in Plains, Georgia, in October 1924, Carter attended the US Naval Academy graduating in 1946. Already, he had a solid moral compass installed in him by his nurse mother, "Miz" Lillian. She set an example for her son by crossing the strict lines of segregation in 1920s Georgia to counsel poor African American women on health care. Shortly after passing out of the navy, he married Rosalynn Smith, having four children together. But tragedy struck in July 1953 as while he was preparing to serve as an engineering officer on the submarine Seawolf, his father, Earl, died from cancer. Carter returned home and was able to rebuild his family's struggling peanut warehouse business after a crippling drought. Ironically the legume became the symbol of his presidential campaign. Active in community affairs and a deacon at the Plains Baptist Church, he launched his political career with a seat on his local board of education. In 1962, he won the election to the Georgia State Senate as a Democrat, running for the governor's office four years later, finishing a disappointing third. The loss sent Carter into a depression, which he overcame by finding renewed faith as a born-again Christian. He ran again for the governorship in 1970 and won. A year later, Carter was featured on the cover of Time magazine as one of a new breed of young political leaders in the South, known for their moderate racial views and progressive economic and social policies. Initially, Carter was a political phenomenon, a new-generation Democrat who, after a single term as governor of the Peach State, shocked the political world by beating a host of better-known rivals to capture his party's presidential nomination in 1976. A year later, he would oust the incumbent Republican president, Ford. Over four years in office, he sought to restore trust in government following the Vietnam War and the Watergate scandal, ushering in reforms meant to transform politics. He mediated the historic Camp David Accords, making peace between Israel and Egypt, an agreement that remains the foundation of Middle East relations. But a sour economy, rocketing inflation, and a 444-day hostage crisis in Iran where 52 American diplomats were held captive undercut his public support. Ultimately, it cost him his re-election bid, losing to Ronald Reagan in 1980. Carter spent his post-presidency, however, on a series of philanthropic causes around the world, like building houses for the poor, combating disease, promoting human rights in places of repression, monitoring elections and seeking to end conflicts. His work as a former president in many ways came to eclipse his time in the White House, eventually earning him the Nobel Peace Prize and rehabilitating his image in the eyes of many Americans. "Between the time he left office and entered hospice care, he got to sit back and enjoy the adulation of a grateful nation," Jeffrey Engel, the director for the presidential history centre at Southern Methodist University, said. "The passage of time smoothed out the rough edges of his political career. If Carter had died in 1982, there would be less adulation than he is receiving right now." Joseph Crespino, the Jimmy Carter Professor of History at Emory University, called his resilience "remarkable." "Instead of sulking about not winning the second term, he used his influence and prominence from his position in politics to help millions of people and win the Nobel Peace Prize," he said. When asked about regrets, Carter spoke of his in his autobiography "A Full Life: Reflections at Ninety." The former president said he was upset by how his kiss with the Queen Mother was portrayed. He wrote how he didn't regret puckering up to Her Majesty, describing it as "lightly on the cheek" as the pair said goodnight after dinner at Buckingham Place in May 1977. However, much like his presidency, its impact never left those affected most by his actions. To her dying day, the Queen Mother had two hates, as detailed in her 2009 biography - oysters and being kissed by a US president.NEW YORK, Dec. 05, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Mercurity Fintech Holding Inc.
