While skyrocketing costs of this auto-related expense can be attributed to everything from parts replacement to service — even health costs as a result of accidents — consumers can better manage these increases with thoughtful study and attention to detail. Some of the common causes for higher insurance rates are Inflation, car accidents, extreme weather conditions such as hail, hurricanes and wind, along with increased vehicle theft claims. Mercury Insurance has partnered with financial literacy influencer Sam Jarman to highlight specific ways consumers can address these rising costs. "Your car is the second biggest expense for most people, right behind your home, and car insurance is a big part of that," said Jarman. "Checking rates and coverage with your Mercury Insurance agent makes sense along with choosing a car with low maintenance costs." According to Consumer Price Index data released earlier this year, car insurance rates are up almost 21% year-over-year for the 12 months which ended in February. The last time car insurance rates rose that much on an annual basis was 1976. Here are some auto insurance statistics recently released from Forbes : "Our goal is to help our customers get the best rates possible because we know that every dollar counts." said Justin Yoshizawa, Director, Product Management, State. "We encourage consumers to build a close relationship with their agent and discuss what discounts they may be eligible to receive. The answer might be surprising." Mercury offers the following tips for lowering your insurance costs: Review your deductibles with your insurance agent – It is recommended that you review your coverage and deductible with your Mercury agent at least once a year. Their wisdom and experience can help you make wise decisions regarding your insurance. Explore car insurance discounts – In addition to bundling your home and auto insurance, Mercury offers discounts for multi-car, good drivers, good students and auto pay. Your agent may have additional discounts to offer. Let Your Insurer Track Your Driving – Most insurers offer discounts for customers who install telematics. This technology allows your insurance company to collect information regarding your mileage and driving habits. This can also provide valuable information regarding your driving as well as saving you money. Drive a safe car with low repair costs – According to Bankrate , some of the cheapest cars to insure are the Subaru Outback, Honda CR-V and Honda Pilot. Also, look for cars with lower repair costs such as the Toyota Corolla, Toyota Prius and Tesla Model 3. Doing some research before you purchase a vehicle can save you money over the length of ownership. Install an anti-theft device on your car – Drivers may receive an additional discount on your auto insurance if you install an anti-theft device on your car. Before you buy a car, compare insurance costs – You can get a fast and easy quote from your Mercury Insurance agent. To receive a quote, you can reach us at 844-514-2893. The judging panel will expand to four, with the dancer (and 2023 pro winner) Karen Byrne joining the veteran adjudicators Loraine Barry, Brian Redmond and Arthur Gourounlian . Jennifer Zamparelli and Doireann Garrihy return as presenters. Eleven celebrities will participate in 2025, hoping to succeed the Paralympian Jason Smyth as winner. As is tradition, they range from champion athletes to showbiz veterans. Here’s a rundown of the hopefuls. Joanna Donnelly, the meteorologist and children’s author who has worked with Met Éireann since 1995, became a TV weather forecaster in 2002. She lives in Dublin with her Dutch husband, Harm Luijkx, and their three children. Her pro partner, Maciej Zieba, a Dancing with the Stars newcomer, is a former student of the series regular Robert Rowiński. The gymnast Rhys McClenaghan won gold in the pommel horse in Paris last summer, securing Ireland its first Olympic gymnastics medal. He dances with Laura Nolan, back for her fifth Dancing with the Stars. She will hope to improve on her two semi-final finishes. The journalist and TV presenter Elaine Crowley has been a host of Ireland AM, on Virgin Media One, since 2021. Dancing with the Stars isn’t her first reality series: in 2016 she participated in a celebrity edition of the fitness show Operation Transformation. She has the ideal dance partner in Denys Samson, who reached the final in 2022 and 2024. The celebrity chef Kevin Dundon is best known for cookery shows such as Guerrilla Gourmet and as owner of Dunbrody Country House Hotel, in Co Wexford . He partners with the series newcomer Rebecca Scott, who recently featured in a group dance in the Blackpool special of the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing. Yasmin Seky played the resourceful girlfriend of a self-destructive member of the Kinsella crime dynasty on the hit gangland thriller Kin . The actor, who is from Cabra in Dublin, is paired with the Italian pro Simone Arena, who created a splash with the 2024 finalist Blu Hydrangea. Monaghan comedian Kayleigh Trappe has 400,000 social-media followers thanks to skits in which she impersonates celebrities such as Nadine Coyle, Joanne McNally and Vogue Williams . It’s quite a change from her original job teaching senior infants. She will dance with the pro Ervinas Merfeldas, who previously twirled across the dance floor with Missy Keating, Stephanie Roche and Katja Mia. Donegal singer Mickey Joe Harte represented Ireland at the 2003 Eurovision Song Contest with We’ve Got the World, coming a respectable 11th. He joins the series’ new pro dancer Daniela Roze, a five-time All-Ireland Latin dance champion from Maynooth, in Co Kildare. Known for his trademark scorpion kick, the taekwondo champion Jack Woolley , who has represented Ireland at the Olympics, got his first black belt at the age of 11. He dances with another Dancing with the Stars debutante, Alex Vladimirov, who was born in Ukraine and grew up in Germany and Australia. The stand-up comedian Gearóid Farrelly has worked in radio, appeared on TV comedy quizshows and written for The Savage Eye and The Panel. He dances with Stephen Vincent, who reached the final with the Paralympic swimmer Ellen Keane in 2022. The model and beauty-pageant winner Aishah Akorede, who grew up in Leixlip, Co Kildare, and has a master’s degree in international corporate governance, represented Ireland at Miss Universe 2023. Earlier this year she appeared on the Discovery+ reality show Beauty and the Geek. Her partner, Robert Rowiński, is a two-time finalist, with Cliona Hagan in 2019 and Brooke Scullion in 2023. Danny O’Carroll, who is best known for playing Buster Brady on Mrs Brown’s Boys, is the latest veteran of the Brendan O’Carroll comedy to grace Dancing with the Stars, on the heels of his aunt Eilish O’Carroll and Rory Cowan. He dances with the two-time finalist Salome Chachua. It’s obviously far too early to take an informed view – but that hasn’t stopped bookmakers from installing Kayleigh Trappe as favourite, followed by Gearóid Farrelly and Rhys McClenaghan. NEWCASTLE, England (Reuters) -West Ham United eased the pressure on new manager Julen Lopetegui with a surprise 2-0 victory away to in-form Newcastle United in the Premier League on Monday. Thomas Soucek gave West Ham the lead in the 10th minute with a header and the visitors reached halftime still in front despite the hosts having a succession of good chances. Newcastle began the second half on top but were rocked on their heels when Aaron Wan-Bissaka broke forward to fire West Ham’s second after 53 minutes — his first goal for the club. West Ham grew in confidence and thoroughly deserved their best victory of what has been a disappointing season so far under Spaniard Lopetegui. They remain 14th place with 15 points while Newcastle are in 10th place with 18 points. Former Spain and Real Madrid manager Lopetegui’s style of play has struggled to win over West Ham’s fans and two poor performances before the international break left his side only three points above the relegation zone. Some media reports suggested Lopetegui was two games from losing his job but the his side responded with an energetic display and clinical display to send the away fans home happy. “I said we needed a performance before the game and I said we needed to go out and show it and I think we did that,” West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen said. “Newcastle always score at home so to keep a clean shoot and score twice. We had to be brave. I think this was more like the level that it takes to play for this club. “I think this is a really big turning point in the season.” Had Newcastle not had an early goal by Alexander Isak ruled out for offside, it could have been a tough night for West Ham. But shortly afterwards, Soucek was left completely unmarked in a crowded penalty area to plant a header into the goal from a corner and West Ham were immediately galvanised. Newcastle, who had won three successive games in all competitions, should have levelled with Sean Longstaff heading a decent chance straight at West Ham keeper Lukasz Fabianski and Lewis Hall driving a shot across the face of the goal. Anthony Gordon also should have done better than to shoot straight at Fabianski after a defensive error while Isak volleyed a chance just wide after great work by Bruno Guimaraes. West Ham’s second goal took the sting completely out of the hosts. Wan-Bissaka made a powerful run forward from deep and was played in on goal by Bowen’s astute pass before placing his shot past Nick Pope and in off the post. Newcastle failed to muster much of a response as they missed the chance to move into sixth place. “We were the dominant team at halftime and the game would have been very different if we had equalised in the first half,” Newcastle manager Eddie Howe said. Kentucky will aim to improve upon its best start in seven seasons when it hosts Western Kentucky on Tuesday night in Lexington, Ky., in the final game of the BBN Invitational. The Wildcats (5-0) are ranked No. 8 in the latest Associated Press poll and are setting impressive offensive milestones even for a program as tradition-rich as Kentucky, which includes eight national championships. The Wildcats have scored 97 or more points in their first four home games for the first time in program history and eclipsed the 100-point mark in three of those games. Their lone trip out of state was a solid 77-72 victory over Duke in a matchup of top-10 teams in Atlanta. Kentucky has also made at least 10 three-pointers in each of its first five games of a season for the first time ever. "I think Kentucky attracts good people," Kentucky coach Mark Pope said after the Wildcats' 108-59 win over Jackson State on Friday. "It's the one place in all college basketball where you represent just a fanbase in a different, unique way." Otega Oweh and Koby Brea have led the Wildcats' early scoring outburst. Oweh, who is averaging 16.2 points per game, had 21 points on 8-for-12 shooting against Jackson State. "He gets us off to unbelievable starts every night," Pope told reporters after that game. "He's probably been our most consistent guy in games." Brea, who scored 22 points against Jackson State and is averaging 16.0 points per game, is leading the nation in 3-point accuracy at 74.1 percent. As a team, the Wildcats are shooting 42.3 percent from beyond the arc. And the few times they miss, Amari Williams has been doing the dirty work on the glass, averaging 10.8 boards in addition to 9.6 points per game. Kentucky faces a different challenge than it's had to contend with so far in the Hilltoppers (3-2), who have won three in a row after losing their first two games to Wichita State and Grand Canyon. Their up-tempo play hasn't exactly resulted in great offensive output, but in the Hilltoppers' 79-62 win over Jackson State on Wednesday, they shot 45.2 percent from 3-point range (14 for 31). "I was happy to see a lot of different guys contribute tonight and, hopefully, get their feet under them a little bit and get some confidence," said Western Kentucky coach Hank Plona, who is in his first season as head coach. "Obviously, Tuesday will be quite a test and challenge for us and we'll need them to be at their absolute best." Western Kentucky has an experienced group, which returned mostly intact from last season. The team is led by Conference USA first-team selection Don McHenry, who is leading the team with 17.2 points and 2.2 steals per game. McHenry is one of four Hilltoppers with scoring averages in double figures. Julius Thedford (11.4 points per game) and Babacar Faye (15.0) are each shooting 40 percent or better from 3-point range. Western Kentucky also figures to challenge the Wildcats on the boards as it enters the game ranked in the top 25 in defensive rebounding (30.4 per game). Faye leads the Hilltoppers in that department, averaging 7.8 rebounds per game and figures to battle Williams inside. "We're not the biggest team in the world, but our depth and our quickness are our strengths," Plona said. --Field Level MediaLarson Financial Group LLC Increases Position in CenterPoint Energy, Inc. Major League Soccer's Vancouver Whitecaps today confirmed that the team is for sale. Majority owner Greg Kerfoot owns the team with Steve Luczo, Jeff Mallett, and Steve Nash. Kerfoot acquired the team in 2002 and then put together the ownership group in 2008. The four were awarded an MLS franchise the following year and saw the team play in North America's premier soccer league starting in 2011. "This decision comes after careful consideration of the club’s journey and reflection on what is required to ensure its continued growth and success,” the team said in a news release. The team added that the Whitecaps have grown to become "a staple of MLS, reaching seventh in league attendance, doubling season ticket memberships over the past two years, and qualifying for the MLS Cup Playoffs in three of the past four seasons." It added that the current ownership has built a solid foundation for the team and that "it is the right time for an owner with the platform, resources and ambition to enhance the club’s ability to compete at the highest levels of MLS and steward the club in realizing its significant potential." The league confirmed the news and praised the team's owners. “The Vancouver Whitecaps would not be where they are today without the vision and commitment of this exceptional ownership group,” said MLS commissioner Don Garber in a statement. “The Whitecaps are a terrific club in a world-class city. On behalf of everyone at Major League Soccer, I want to thank them for their tremendous contributions and look forward to working with them to identify new ownership for the club.” Kerfoot said today in a statement on behalf of the ownership group that it has been "committed to transforming our local soccer club into a significant contributor to our community.” He added, "It is gratifying to see how meaningful the Whitecaps have become to so many, and to have been able to contribute to the growth of a vibrant and thriving soccer community in Vancouver, the Lower Mainland, British Columbia, and beyond.” He thanked what he called "the passionate MLS supporters, academy development teams and players, the thousands of kids who attend camps, and the groups we support in nurturing the game in so many places have all proven out our belief in Vancouver as a first-class soccer market. The future of the Vancouver Whitecaps is bright.”Letter: The question is why
