Try the more than $115 million that will be spread across the conferences at the end of the season, all depending on who gets in and which teams go the farthest. According to the College Football Playoff website, the 12 teams simply making the bracket earn their conferences $4 million each. Another $4 million goes to conferences whose teams get into the quarterfinals. Then, there’s $6 million more for teams that make the semifinals and another $6 million for those who play for the title. Most of this bonanza comes courtesy of ESPN, which is forking over $1.3 billion a year to televise the new postseason. A lot of that money is already earmarked — more goes to the Big Ten and Southeastern Conference than the Big 12 or Atlantic Coast — but a lot is up for grabs in the 11 games that will play out between the opening round on Dec. 20 and the final on Jan. 20. In all, the teams that make the title game will bring $20 million to their conferences, all of which distribute that money, along with billions in TV revenue and other sources, in different ways. In fiscal 2022-23, the Big Ten, for instance, reported revenue of nearly $880 million and distributed about $60.5 million to most of its members. The massive stakes might help explain the unabashed lobbying coming from some corners of the football world, as the tension grows in advance of Sunday’s final rankings, which will set the bracket. Earlier this week, Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark lit into the selection committee, which doesn’t have a single team higher than 15 in the rankings. That does two things: It positions the Big 12 as a one-bid league, and also threatens to makes its champion — either Arizona State or Iowa State — the fifth-best among conference titlists that get automatic bids. Only the top four of those get byes, which could cost the Big 12 a spot in the quarterfinals — or $4 million. “The committee continues to show time and time again that they are paying attention to logos versus resumes,” Yormark said this week, while slamming the idea of teams with two losses in his conference being ranked worse than teams with three in the SEC. The ACC is also staring at a one-bid season with only No. 8 SMU inside the cut line of this week’s projected bracket. Miami’s loss last week all but bumped the Hurricanes out of the playoffs, a snub that ACC commissioner Jim Phillips said left him “incredibly shocked and disappointed.” “As we look ahead to the final rankings, we hope the committee will reconsider and put a deserving Miami in the field,” Phillips said in a statement. The lobbying and bickering filters down to the campuses that feel the impact. And, of course, to social media. Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. One of the most entertaining episodes came earlier this week when athletic directors at Iowa State and SMU went back and forth about whose team was more deserving. There are a few stray millions that the selection committee cannot really influence, including a $3 million payment to conferences that make the playoff. In a reminder that all these kids are going to school, after all, the conferences get $300,000 per football team that meets academic requirements to participate in the postseason. Researchers at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) have developed an artificial intelligence model that helps identify depression based on speech and brain neural activity. This offers a new approach to depression diagnosis, according to a press release by KTU. “Depression is one of the most common mental disorders, with devastating consequences for both the individual and society, so we are developing a new, more objective diagnostic method that could become accessible to everyone in the future,” says Rytis Maskeliūnas, a professor at KTU and one of the authors of the invention. The scientists argue that while most diagnostic research for depression has traditionally relied on a single type of data, the new multimodal approach can provide better information about a person’s emotional state. Impressive accuracy The combination of speech and brain activity data achieved an impressive 97.53 percent accuracy in diagnosing depression, significantly outperforming alternative methods. “This is because the voice adds data to the study that we cannot yet extract from the brain,” explains Maskeliūnas. According to Musyyab Yousufi, a PhD student at KTU who contributed to the invention, the choice of data was carefully considered: “While it is believed that, facial expressions might reveal more about a person’s psychological state, but this is quite easily falsifiable data. We chose voice because it can subtly reveal an emotional state, with the diagnosis affecting the pace of speech, intonation, and overall energy.” Moreover, unlike electrical brain activity (EEG) or voice data, face can directly identify a person’s state of severity up to a certain extent. “But we cannot violate patients’ privacy, and also, collecting and combining data from several sources is more promising for further use,” says the professor at KTU Faculty of Informatics (IF). Maskeliūnas emphasises that the EEG dataset used for the research was obtained from the Multimodal Open Dataset for Mental Disorder Analysis (MODMA), as the KTU research group represents computer science and not the medical science field. MODMA EEG data was collected and recorded for five minutes while participants were awake, at rest, and with their eyes closed. In the audio part of the experiment, the patients participated in a question-and-answer session and several activities focused on reading and describing pictures to capture their natural language and cognitive state. AI diagnosis The collected EEG and audio signals were transformed into spectrograms, allowing the data to be visualised. Special noise filters and pre-processing methods were applied to make the data noise-free and comparable, and a modified DenseNet-121 deep-learning model was used to identify signs of depression in the images. Each image reflected signal changes over time. The EEG showed waveforms of brain activity, and the sound showed frequency and intensity distributions. The model included a custom classification layer trained to split the data into classes of healthy or depressed people. In the future, this AI model could speed up the diagnosis of depression, or even make it remote, and reduce the risk of subjective errors. This requires further clinical trials and improvements to the programme. However, Maskeliūnas adds, the latter aspect of the research might raise some challenges. “The main problem with these studies is lack of data because people tend to remain private about their mental health issues,” he says. Another important aspect is getting the algorithm to provide information to a medical professional about what led to the diagnosis. “The algorithm still has to learn how to explain the diagnosis in a comprehensible way,” says Maskeliūnas. According to the KTU professor, due to the growing demand for AI solutions that directly affect people in areas of healthcare, finance, and the legal system, similar requirements are becoming common. This is why explainable artificial intelligence (XAI), which aims to explain to the user why the model makes certain decisions and to increase their trust in the AI, is now gaining momentum. Washington : He’s sold everything from steaks and sneakers, to Make America Pray Again bibles. Now, Donald Trump is seeking to profit off the assassination attempt on his life with a new fragrance called Fight, Fight, Fight. First Lady Jill Biden talks to President-elect Donald Trump at reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Credit: AP In the latest example of ethics being tested in politics, the new perfume range for men and women hit the market this week, giving fans the chance to smell the scent of victory for the cool price of $US199 ($312). Trump announced his latest business venture in a Truth Social post on Sunday, sharing a picture of himself having a pleasant exchange with First Lady Jill Biden at the grand reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris with the humorous caption: “A fragrance your enemies can’t resist.” “Here are my new Trump Perfumes & Colognes! I call them Fight, Fight, Fight, because they represent us WINNING,” he wrote. “Great Christmas gifts for the family... Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year!” The iconic image of Donald Trump urging supporters to “fight, fight, fight” after surviving an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania in July. Credit: AP According to the perfume website, the new fragrances have been “curated to capture the essence of success and determination” and are essentially a “rallying cry in a bottle”. Their name, of course, has been taken from the now historic words Trump shouted as he pumped his fist in the air after his near-death experience in July when 20-year-old gunman Thomas Crooks tried to kill the former president as he stood on stage at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Since then, that iconic image has appeared on everything from T-shirts to mugs and posters that Trump – as well as third parties selling merchandise at his rallies – have used to make a quick buck. Loading “Crafted for those who stand tall, this bold scent delivers rich, robust notes that leave a lasting impression,” says the website where fans can now buy his latest perfume range. “It’s not just a cologne – it’s a symbol of resilience. Inspired by Trump’s relentless drive, wear it with pride and confidence.” While Trump is no stranger to trading off his famous name, his transition team has declined to say whether he will continue to do so after he is sworn in as America’s 47th president on January 20, which would potentially raise further ethical questions for the billionaire businessman turned politician and convicted felon. The company listed as the contact for the fragrance is 45Footwear LLC, the same group affiliated with Trump’s sneaker brand. Records suggest it is based in Wyoming but its ownership has not been disclosed, making its financial dealings hard to trace. Gary Nordlinger, a public policy expert at George Washington University said Trump’s latest fragrance venture was “tacky, ethically dubious and demeaning of the office of the president” - but hardly surprisingly. Citing the membership fees at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort as an example – whereby individuals seeking access or influence now pay $1 million to be part of Trump’s private club in Florida – Nordlinger added: “Trump has always been able to get other people to pay for his lifestyle, but it apparently doesn’t seem to bother millions who voted for him. So the challenge for people like me, and for the Democrats, is not just to criticise the man, but to understand what makes him so special to so many.” The perfumes are the latest in a long time of items the 78-year-old Republican has hawked. Last year, for example, he sold a new collection of digital trading cards (NFTs) featuring various portraits of the then Republican candidate, which generated almost $5 million within days of release. “These cards show me dancing and even me holding some bitcoin!” Trump said in a promotional video posted in August. The ad for Trump’s new fragrance. Credit: TruthSocial “Happy Holy Week! Let’s Make America Pray Again!” Trump wrote as he encouraged supporters to buy the book in time for Easter. And in February, he also made a somewhat unusual campaign stop at Sneaker-Con in Philadelphia, one of the largest sneaker gatherings in the world, where he spruiked a pair of shiny gold high tops with a retail value of $US399. The move came immediately after a judge in New York ordered Trump to pay $454 million after he was found liable of fraudulently inflating the value of his properties for financial gain. Trump sought to have that claim dismissed after his election victory against Vice President Kamala Harris last month, but New York attorney general Letitia James’ office refused, telling Trump’s lawyers on Tuesday that there was “no basis” to do so. Most Viewed in World LoadingThe election of Donald Trump has set the stage for what many expect to be a push for some kind of peace deal between Russia and Ukraine in the coming months. The outcome of these efforts is likely to redefine the entire global security framework and determine whether the rules-based order established since World War II is replaced by a new era of international instability. In the eighty years since the defeat of Nazi Germany, the United States has emerged as the key architect of global stability. The decades of unprecedented economic growth and relative peace that followed the Cold War allowed nations to enjoy a period of relative security and prosperity under the umbrella of international law. However, it is now clear that this tranquility lulled some democracies into neglecting their defense commitments, which helped convince autocracies like Putin’s Russia that the time was right to contest the existing order. Ukraine now finds itself on the front lines of a clash between the democratic and authoritarian worlds. Since the collapse of the USSR, the former captive nations of the Soviet Union have struggled to emerge from centuries of Russian imperial rule. Lithuania, Estonia, and Latvia have succeeded in integrating into Western economic and security alliances. Others such as Belarus have returned to the Kremlin orbit. Ukraine’s journey has been the most challenging of all. Since 1991, Ukraine has slowly but steadily moved away from the totalitarian past and set out on a pathway toward a democratic European future. However, these efforts have been hampered by Russia’s determination to reassert its control over the country. Since the early years of the post-Soviet era, it has become apparent that Moscow views the emergence of a genuinely independent and democratic Ukraine as an existential threat to its own authoritarian model and a potential catalyst for the next chapter in Russia’s retreat from empire. As the world watches the Russian invasion of Ukraine unfold, UkraineAlert delivers the best Atlantic Council expert insight and analysis on Ukraine twice a week directly to your inbox. Ukraine’s resilience in the face of Russia’s initial invasion in 2014 and the full-scale attack of 2022 demonstrates the success of the country’s nation-building efforts and the strength of Ukrainian civil society. Despite the immense pressures of war, today’s Ukraine remains committed to democratic values and Euro-Atlantic integration. This helps to explain why Putin regards continued Ukrainian independence as so dangerous. Moscow’s ambitions are no secret. The Kremlin views its war against Ukraine as both a crucial step toward rebuilding the Russian Empire and as a tool in the broader struggle to transform the geopolitical landscape. Putin is determined to erase Ukrainian statehood while simultaneously eroding the very foundations of international law and global security. In Putin’s worldview, today’s rules-based order is merely a construct that serves US interests rather than a framework for mutually beneficial global cooperation. He is now building a coalition of like-minded autocrats who share his ambition of establishing a new world order defined by spheres of interest and power projection, where the world’s largest nations are free to dominate their smaller neighbors. The first cracks in the current rules-based order began to emerge in 2014 with the Russian invasion of Crimea and eastern Ukraine. This provoked an underwhelming response from the international community, which was interpreted by Moscow as an invitation to go further. More recently, the chaotic 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan was seen as further proof that the United States was a declining power. This helped convince Putin to proceed with the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Continued Western weakness in the wake of Russia’s 2022 invasion has made Putin even more ambitious and has encouraged his authoritarian allies. Moscow has expanded its presence in Africa and the Middle East, while strengthening cooperation with the likes of China, Iran, and North Korea. This axis of autocrats is playing an increasingly important role in Russia’s war effort. In recent weeks, the first contingent of approximately ten thousand North Korean soldiers joined the Russian invasion of Ukraine. They are unlikely to be the last. It should now be abundantly clear that a Russian victory in Ukraine, no matter how limited, would embolden autocracies worldwide. This would ignite a chain reaction and accelerate the unraveling of global security. Moreover, abandoning Ukraine would send a chilling message to all US allies. This would pave the way for a far more dangerous world where aggression is met with silence and order gives way to chaos. It is not too late to prevent this descent into geopolitical lawlessness. A resolute Western stance on ending the Russian invasion of Ukraine can still secure “peace through strength” and send a powerful message that international aggression will not be tolerated. However, failure to do so will undermine global security and prosperity for years to come. Victor Liakh is the CEO of the East Europe Foundation . Who/what would have thought something so simple would take so long? The athletic eligibility of San Jose State's volleyball team and trans athlete Blaire Fleming came under legal review on Thursday during an emergency hearing in Colorado. But it couldn't get started before a lengthy discussion on whether to use she/her pronouns when referring to Fleming. Federal Judge Kato Crews, who was appointed by President Biden in January, dedicated the first 45 minutes of the hearing to a debate between the plaintiffs and defendants over what pronouns to use when describing Fleming and whether Fleming's name should be used during the hearing for the sake of privacy. Nearly an hour into the hearing, Crews declared that he would choose to use she/her pronouns, but that any other individual in the courtroom could use whatever pronouns they wanted to use. Crews also clarified that his decision to the she/her pronouns when referring to Fleming did not reflect his decision on what Fleming's biological gender is. Crews also ruled that it was okay to use Fleming's name during the hearing. "While the court is not insensitive to the privacy issues ... the defendants have essentially affirmed there is a transgender player on the SJSU volleyball team," Crews said. THE PRONOUN POLICE HAVE ARRIVED AND ARE COMING FOR YOU NEXT Blaire Fleming of the San Jose State Spartans reacts during the second set against the Air Force Falcons at Falcon Court at East Gym on October 19, 2024, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. (Andrew Wevers/Getty Images) The verbal implementation of official pronouns when referring to individuals to avoid "misgendering" them has, in fact, been tied to legal repercussions in the U.S. in recent years. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) rolled out a new gender pronoun policy in November 2023. "All applicants and employees should be addressed by the names and pronouns they use to describe themselves. Using correct names and pronouns helps foster workplaces free of discrimination and harassment," the U.S. Office of Personnel Management guidance states . "This practice also creates an inclusive work environment where all applicants and employees are treated with dignity. The isolated and inadvertent use of an incorrect name or pronoun will generally not constitute unlawful harassment, but, as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has explained, continued intentional use of an incorrect name or pronoun (or both) could, in certain circumstances, contribute to an unlawful hostile work environment." Heritage Foundation expert and former HHS official Roger Severino previously told Fox News Digital that the laws violate employee rights and will result in firings for "misgendering." SJSU WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL'S 1ST OPPONENT DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT TRASN PLAYER, SUGGESTS MATCH WOULDN'T HAVE HAPPENED Official and proper pronoun usage has been at the center of mockery and satire by right-wing figures in politics and media, including President-elect Trump, in recent years. After liberal social media influencer and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez , D-N.Y. was discovered to have removed pronouns from her X bio after Trump's election win, the congresswoman became the subject of a viral mockery campaign by conservative and satirical users. Former NCAA swimmer and OutKick contributor Riley Gaines didn't let Ocasio-Cortez off the hook in a tirade of insults on X on November 14. "How will we know what to call AOC now that her pronouns in her bio are gone?!" Gaines wrote. And thus, a hearing on the situation with Fleming and San Jose State, which has recently become a landmark event in the civil rights discussion around women's sports, fittingly included a pronoun debate for the ages. The hearing came in response to a recent lawsuit filed against the Mountain West Conference for its policies on gender eligibility and identity. The plaintiffs, including multiple Mountain West volleyball players and Utah State University, contested the conference's policies that have let San Jose State player Blaire Fleming compete, despite being a biological male. San Jose State finished the regular season with a 14-6 record and a 12-6 conference record. Six of its conference wins came via forfeit by opposing teams amid the controversy. Those include forfeits from conference opponents Boise State, Utah State, Wyoming and Nevada. Wyoming and Boise State have each forfeited two matches against the Spartans. The plaintiffs on Thursday were seeking to have the losses that those teams took for the forfeit be erased from their record and not counted against them in qualifying for the Mountain West Tournament. The plaintiffs were also seeking to prevent SJSU from rostering Fleming in any future games, including the upcoming tournament. Fleming has been one of the top players in the conference and an offensive anchor for San Jose State this season, even amid the controversy. Fleming is third in the conference in average kills per serve with 3.86 and amassed 297 total kills on the year despite playing seven fewer games than expected due to the forfeits. It's helped give San Jose State the third best hitting percentage in the Mountain West. (Andrew Wevers/Getty Images) A Mountain West spokesperson told Fox News Digital on Wednesday that the conference is currently planning for San Jose State and Fleming to compete in the tournament in Las Vegas, starting November 27. That spokesperson also says the conference has a contingency plan in the event teams refuse to face San Jose State over Fleming's presence on the team. That plan includes a willingness to recognize San Jose State as the conference champion if the Spartans advance to the final and win the match by virtue of forfeit from opponents. "If we get to a championship game, and it's San Jose State vs. whoever, if that institution forfeits the game, then San Jose State wins that match, and then they are tournament champions. And they would be the automatic qualifier out of the Mountain West," the spokesperson said. However, Crews' eventual ruling could disrupt that plan and keep Fleming out of the tournament altogether. Crews concluded the hearing by saying he will deliver a ruling on the case in a "timely fashion." The tournament is set to begin next Wednesday. CNN reported that the Justice Department, in 2017, during Trump’s first term in office, secretly obtained records of Reps. Adam Schiff (D-CA) and Eric Swalwell (D-CA), Patel – who was at the time a Republican staffer for the House Intelligence Committee – as well as 21 Democrat congressional staffers, 20 Republican staffers (including Patel,) two nonpartisan congressional staffers, and eight reporters. President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Patel to serve as the FBI Director. Career prosecutors at the Justice Department sought records, including emails from journalists at CNN, the Washington Post , and the New York Times . Horowitz wrote that seeking these communications based on “the close proximity in time between access to classified information and subsequent publication of the information... risks chilling Congress’s ability to conduct oversight of the executive branch.” He added, saying that such a move: ...exposes congressional officials to having their records reviewed by the Department solely for conducting Congress’ constitutional authorized oversight duties and creating, at a minimum, the appearance of inappropriate interference by the executive branch in legitimate oversight activity by the legislative branch. Horowitz did not find retaliatory motivation by the career prosecutors who issued the compulsory process of the lawmakers, staffers, and reporters, nor was the motivation based on party affiliation. He did not recommend charges again anyone in their review. The IG report found that the Justice Department did not disclose that the NDOs focused on lawmakers and congressional staffers, although Justice Department policy at the time did not require that. The Inspector General’s report recommended the Justice Department: Evaluate when advance notification to a senior Department, such as the Deputy Attorney General or Attorney General, should be required before compulsory process is issued to consider raising constitutional separation of issues Consider the circumstances in which NDOs should identify for the reviewing judge that the records covered by a proposed NDO are records of lawmakers or congressional staffers Consider whether there are circumstances in which an exhaustion requirement should be a requisite for issuing compulsory process to obtain records of members of Congress and congressional staffers The Justice Department also reportedly failed to comply with the Department’s News Media Policy, which includes: Specifically, DOJ failed to convene the News Media Review Committee to consider the compulsory process authorization requests; DOJ did not obtain the required Director of National Intelligence (DNI) certification in one investigation, and we were unable to confirm whether the DNI certification it obtained in another investigation was provided to the Attorney General before he authorized the request; and DOJ did not obtain the Attorney General’s express authorization for the NDOs that were sought for the compulsory process issued in the investigations. Patel has complained about the situation before, writing in a newsletter, “The DOJ illegally spied on me during the Russia Gate investigation!” He has since sued the Justice Department for secretly seeking access to his personal email account. Apple products are rarely on sale throughout the year. While we like to list deals with at least 20% off the typical RRP, Apple promotions won't always have such steep discounts. However, you can still find some great deals on Apple iPads, iPhones, accessories, and more during Black Friday. Black Friday and Cyber Monday are very similar, but they differ in terms of timing. Black Friday launches on Nov. 29, 2024, while Cyber Monday -- which always falls on the Monday straight after Black Friday week -- will launch on Dec. 2. The days in between are often called Cyber Week. This year, we're expecting many deals to hold through Black Friday and Cyber Monday -- but if you see something you want to pick up, we'd recommend doing so sooner rather than later, in case the deal does expire or the product goes out of stock. US President-elect Donald Trump's proposals to impose sweeping tariffs on imports could counter earlier efforts to cool inflation, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said Tuesday, warning that consumer prices could rise. Her comments at the Wall Street Journal's CEO Council Summit come as Trump has vowed broad tariffs of at least 10 percent on all imports, and higher rates on goods from China, Canada and Mexico. Imposing broad-based tariffs could "raise prices significantly for American consumers and create cost pressures on firms" which rely on imported goods, Yellen said when asked about Trump's plans. She cautioned that this could weigh on the competitiveness of certain sectors and increase costs to households. "This is a strategy I worry could derail the progress that we've made on inflation, and have adverse consequences on growth," she said. But she defended efforts by President Joe Biden's administration to impose targeted tariffs on Chinese goods to counter unfair trade practices by Beijing. She has previously raised concern over China's industrial overcapacity -- which risks a flood of underpriced goods into global markets and could undermine the development of key US industries. On Tuesday, Yellen also expressed regret that the United States has not made more progress on the country's deficit, saying she believes it "needs to be brought down, especially now that we're in an environment of higher interest rates." She stressed the importance of an independent Federal Reserve too, saying that countries perform better economically when central banks are allowed to exercise their best judgment without political influence. Trump has said that he would like "at least" a say over setting the Fed's interest rate. "I think it's a mistake to become involved in commenting on the Fed and certainly taking steps to compromise its independence," said Yellen. "I believe it tends to undermine the confidence of financial markets and, ultimately, of Americans in an important institution," she added. Yellen noted that she has spoken with Trump's Treasury chief nominee, billionaire hedge fund manager Scott Bessent, congratulating him on his nomination. bys/bjtEagle Capital Growth Fund CEO buys $58,425 in stockNoneAboriginal digital ID offers Indigenous Australians pathway to essential services
